Search

The Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) at Vera C. Rubin Observatory is planned to begin in the Fall of 2025. The LSST survey cadence has been designed via a community-driven process regulated by the Survey Cadence Optimization Committee (SCOC), which recommended up to 3% of the observing time to carry out Target of Opportunity (ToO) observations. Experts from the scientific community, Rubin Observatory personnel, and members of the SCOC were brought together to deliver a recommendation for the implementation of the ToO program during a workshop held in March 2024. Four main science cases were identified: gravitational wave multi-messenger astronomy, high energy neutrinos, Galactic supernovae, and small potentially hazardous asteroids possible impactors. Additional science cases were identified and briefly addressed in the documents, including lensed or poorly localized gamma-ray bursts and twilight discoveries. Trigger prioritization, automated response, and detailed strategies were discussed for each science case. This document represents the outcome of the Rubin ToO 2024 workshop, with additional contributions from members of the Rubin Science Collaborations. The implementation of the selection criteria and strategies presented in this document has been endorsed in the SCOC Phase 3 Recommendations document (PSTN-056). Although the ToO program is still to be finalized, this document serves as a baseline plan for ToO observations with the Rubin Observatory.

Nongravitational accelerations in the absence of observed activity have recently been identified on NEOs, opening the question of the prevalence of anisotropic mass-loss in the near-Earth environment. Motivated by the necessity of nongravitational accelerations to identify 2010 VL$_{65}$ and 2021 UA$_{12}$ as a single object, we investigate the problem of linking separate apparitions in the presence of nongravitational perturbations. We find that nongravitational accelerations on the order of $10^{-9}$ au/d$^2$ can lead to a change in plane-of-sky positions of $\sim10^3$ arcsec between apparitions. Moreover, we inject synthetic tracklets of hypothetical nongravitationally-accelerating NEOs into the Minor Planet Center orbit identification algorithms. We find that at large nongravitational accelerations ($|A_i|\geq10^{-8}$ au/d$^2$) these algorithms fail to link a significant fraction of these tracklets. We further show that if orbits can be determined for both apparitions, the tracklets will be linked regardless of nongravitational accelerations, although they may be linked to multiple objects. In order to aid in the identification and linkage of nongravitationally accelerating objects, we propose and test a new methodology to search for unlinked pairs. When applied to the current census of NEOs, we recover the previously identified case but identify no new linkages. We conclude that current linking algorithms are generally robust to nongravitational accelerations, but objects with large nongravitational accelerations may potentially be missed. While current algorithms are well-positioned for the anticipated increase in the census population from future survey missions, it may be possible to find objects with large nongravitational accelerations hidden in isolated tracklet pairs., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures and 5 appendix figures. So-called 'dark comets' are small, morphologically inactive near-Earth objects (NEOs) that exhibit nongravitational accelerations inconsistent with radiative effects. These objects exhibit short rotational periods (minutes to hours), where measured. We find that the strengths required to prevent catastrophic disintegration are consistent with those measured in cometary nuclei and expected in rubble pile objects. We hypothesize that these dark comets are the end result of a rotational fragmentation cascade, which is consistent with their measured physical properties. We calculate the predicted size-frequency distribution for objects evolving under this model. Using dynamical simulations, we further demonstrate that the majority of these bodies originated from the $\nu_6$ resonance, implying the existence of volatiles in the current inner main belt. Moreover, one of the dark comets, (523599) 2003 RM, likely originated from the outer main belt, although a JFC origin is also plausible. Stellar flares are short-duration ($<$ hours) bursts of radiation associated with surface magnetic reconnection events. Stellar magnetic activity generally decreases as a function of both age and Rossby number, $R_0$, a measure of the relative importance of the convective and rotational dynamos. Young stars ($<300$ Myr) have typically been overlooked in population-level flare studies due to challenges with flare-detection methods. Here, we select a sample of stars that are members of 26 nearby moving groups, clusters, or associations with ages $<$300 Myr that have been observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite at 2-minute cadence. We identified 26,355 flares originating from 3,157 stars and robustly measure the rotation periods of 1,847 stars. We measure and find the flare frequency distribution (FFD) slope, $\alpha$, saturates for all spectral types at $\alpha \sim -0.5$ and is constant over 300 Myr. Additionally, we find that flare rates for stars $t_\textrm{age} = 50 - 250$ Myr are saturated below $R_0 < 0.14$, which is consistent with other indicators of magnetic activity. We find evidence of annual flare rate variability in eleven stars, potentially correlated with long term stellar activity cycles. Additionally, we cross match our entire sample with GALEX and find no correlation between flare rate and Far- and Near-Ultraviolet flux. Finally, we find the flare rates of planet hosting stars are relatively lower than comparable, larger samples of stars, which may have ramifications for the atmospheric evolution of short-period exoplanets., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, under review at AAS Journals. Tidal heating on Io due to its finite eccentricity was predicted to drive surface volcanic activity, which was subsequently confirmed by the $\textit{Voyager}$ spacecrafts. Although the volcanic activity in Io is more complex, in theory volcanism can be driven by runaway melting in which the tidal heating increases as the mantle thickness decreases. We show that this runaway melting mechanism is generic for a composite planetary body with liquid core and solid mantle, provided that (i) the mantle rigidity, $\mu$, is comparable to the central pressure, i.e. $\mu/ (\rho g R_{\rm P})\gtrsim0.1$ for a body with density $\rho$, surface gravitational acceleration $g$, and radius $R_{\rm P}$, (ii) the surface is not molten, (iii) tides deposit sufficient energy, and (iv) the planet has nonzero eccentricity. We calculate the approximate liquid core radius as a function of $\mu/ (\rho g R_{\rm P})$, and find that more than $90\%$ of the core will melt due to this runaway for $\mu/ (\rho g R_{\rm P})\gtrsim1$. From all currently confirmed exoplanets, we find that the terrestrial planets in the L98-59 system are the most promising candidates for sustaining active volcanism. However, uncertainties regarding the quality factors and the details of tidal heating and cooling mechanisms prohibit definitive claims of volcanism on any of these planets. We generate synthetic transmission spectra of these planets assuming Venus-like atmospheric compositions with an additional 5, 50, and $98\%$ SO$_2$ component, which is a tracer of volcanic activity. We find a $\gtrsim 3 \sigma$ preference for a model with SO$_2$ with 5-10 transits with $\textit{JWST}$ for L98-59bcd., Comment: 16 pages, 8 Figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The discovery of two interstellar objects passing through the Solar System, 1I/`Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov, implies that a galactic population exists with a spatial number density of order $\sim0.1$ au$^{-3}$. The forthcoming Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) has been predicted to detect more asteroidal interstellar objects like 1I/`Oumuamua. We apply recently developed methods to simulate a suite of galactic populations of interstellar objects with a range of assumed kinematics, albedos and size-frequency distributions (SFD). We incorporate these populations into the objectsInField (OIF) algorithm, which simulates detections of moving objects by an arbitrary survey. We find that the LSST should detect between $\sim 0-70$ asteroidal interstellar objects every year (assuming the implied number density), with sensitive dependence on the SFD slope and characteristic albedo of the host population. The apparent rate of motion on the sky -- along with the associated trailing loss -- appears to be the largest barrier to detecting interstellar objects. Specifically, a relatively large number of synthetic objects would be detectable by the LSST if not for their rapid sky-motion ($>0.5^\circ$ d$^{-1}$). Therefore, algorithms that could successfully link and detect rapidly moving objects would significantly increase the number of interstellar object discoveries with the LSST (and in general). Significant nonradial, nongravitational accelerations with magnitudes incompatible with radiation-driven effects have been reported in seven small, photometrically inactive near-Earth objects. Two of these objects exhibit large transverse accelerations (i.e., within the orbital plane but orthogonal to the radial direction), and six exhibit significant out-of-plane accelerations. Here, we find that anisotropic outgassing resulting from differential heating on a nucleus with nonzero spin-pole obliquity, averaged over an eccentric orbit, can explain these accelerations for most of the objects. This balanced outgassing model depends on three parameters -- the spin pole orientation (R.A. and Dec.) and an acceleration magnitude. For these "dark comets" (excepting 2003 RM), we obtain parameter values that reproduce the observed nongravitational accelerations. We derive formulae for the component accelerations under certain assumptions for the acceleration scaling over heliocentric distance. Although we lack estimates of these objects' spin axes to confirm our values, this mechanism is nevertheless a plausible explanation for the observed accelerations, and produces accurate perturbations to the heliocentric motions of most of these objects. The non-detection of a coma surrounding 1I/`Oumuamua, the first discovered interstellar object (ISO), has prompted a variety of hypotheses to explain its nongravitational acceleration. Given that forthcoming surveys are poised to identify analogues of this enigmatic object, it is prudent to devise alternative approaches to characterization. In this study, we posit X-ray spectroscopy as a surprisingly effective probe of volatile ISO compositions. Heavily ionized metals in the solar wind interact with outgassed neutrals and emit high-energy photons in a process known as charge exchange, and charge exchange induced X-rays from comets and planetary bodies have been observed extensively in our Solar System. We develop a model to predict the X-ray flux of an ISO based on its chemical inventory and ephemeris. We find that while standard cometary constituents, such as H$_2$O, CO$_2$, CO, and dust are best probed via optical or infrared observations, we predict strong X-ray emission generated by charge exchange with extended comae of H$_2$ and N$_2$ -- species which lack strong infrared fluorescence transitions. We find that XMM-Newton would have been sensitive to charge exchange emission from 1I/`Oumuamua during the object's close approach to Earth, and that constraints on composition may have been feasible. We argue for follow-up X-ray observations of newly discovered ISOs with close-in perihelia. Compositional constraints on the general ISO population could reconcile the apparently self-conflicting nature of 1I/`Oumuamua, and provide insight into the earliest stages of planet formation in extrasolar systems., Comment: Accepted to The Astrophysical Journal. 18 pages, 6 figures

In this paper, we investigate the nonprincipal axis (NPA) rotational state of 1I/`Oumuamua -- the first interstellar object discovered traversing the inner Solar System -- from its photometric light curve. Building upon Mashchenko (2019), we develop a model which incorporates NPA rotation and {Sun-induced, time-varying} outgassing torques to generate synthetic light curves of the object. The model neglects tidal forces, which are negligible compared to outgassing torques over the distances that `Oumuamua was observed. We implement an optimization scheme that incorporates the NPA rotation model to calculate the initial rotation state of the object. We find that an NPA rotation state with an average period of $\langle P \rangle\simeq7.34$ hr best reproduces the photometric data. The discrepancy between this period and previous estimates is due to continuous period modulation induced by outgassing torques in the rotational model, {as well as different periods being used}. The best fit to the October 2017 data does not reproduce the November 2017 data (although the later measurements are too sparse to fit). The light curve is consistent with no secular evolution of the angular momentum, somewhat in tension with the empirical correlations between nuclear spin-up and cometary outgassing. The complex rotation of `Oumuamua may be {the result of primordial rotation about the smallest principal axis} if (i) the object experienced hypervolatile outgassing and (ii) our idealized outgassing model is accurate., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, 1 animation. Cosmic rays produced by young stellar objects can potentially alter the ionization structure, heating budget, chemical composition, and accretion activity in circumstellar disks. The inner edges of these disks are truncated by strong magnetic fields, which can reconnect and produce flaring activity that accelerates cosmic radiation. The resulting cosmic rays can provide a source of ionization and produce spallation reactions that alter the composition of planetesimals. This reconnection and particle acceleration are analogous to the physical processes that produce flaring in and heating of stellar coronae. Flaring events on the surface of the Sun exhibit a power-law distribution of energy, reminiscent of those measured for Earthquakes and avalanches. Numerical lattice-reconnection models are capable of reproducing the observed power-law behavior of solar flares under the paradigm of self-organized criticality. One interpretation of these experiments is that the solar corona maintains a nonlinear attractor -- or ``critical'' -- state by balancing energy input via braided magnetic fields and output via reconnection events. Motivated by these results, we generalize the lattice-reconnection formalism for applications in the truncation region of magnetized disks. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that these nonlinear dynamical systems are capable of both attaining and maintaining criticality in the presence of Keplerian shear and other complications. The resulting power-law spectrum of flare energies in the equilibrium attractor state is found to be nearly universal in magnetized disks. This finding indicates that magnetic reconnection and flaring in the inner regions of circumstellar disks occur in a manner similar to activity on stellar surfaces.

Interstellar small bodies are unique probes into the histories of exoplanetary systems. One hypothesized class of interlopers are "Jurads," exo-comets released into the Milky Way during the post-main sequence as the thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch (AGB) host stars lose mass. In this study, we assess the prospects for the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) to detect a Jurad and examine whether such an interloper would be observationally distinguishable from exo-comets ejected during the (pre-)main sequence. Using analytic and numerical methods, we estimate the fraction of exo-Oort Cloud objects that are released from 1-8 solar mass stars during post-main sequence evolution. We quantify the extent to which small bodies are altered by the increased luminosity and stellar outflows during the AGB, finding that some Jurads may lack hypervolatiles and that stellar winds could deposit dust that covers the entire exo-comet surface. Next, we construct models of the interstellar small body reservoir for various size-frequency distribution slopes, characteristic sizes, and the total mass sequestered in the minor planets of exo-Oort Clouds. Even with the LSST's increased search volume compared to contemporary surveys, we find that detecting a Jurad is unlikely but not infeasible given the current understanding of (exo)planet formation., Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures; accepted to PSJ

A large fraction of white dwarfs (WDs) have metal-polluted atmospheres, which are produced by accreting material from remnant planetary systems. The composition of the accreted debris broadly resembles that of rocky Solar System objects. Volatile-enriched debris with compositions similar to long-period comets (LPCs) is rarely observed. We attempt to reconcile this dearth of volatiles with the premise that exo-Oort clouds (XOCs) occur around a large fraction of planet-hosting stars. We estimate the comet accretion rate from an XOC analytically, adapting the 'loss cone' theory of LPC delivery in the Solar System. We investigate the dynamical evolution of an XOC during late stellar evolution. Using numerical simulations, we show that 1 to 30 per cent of XOC objects remain bound after anisotropic stellar mass loss imparting a WD natal kick of $\sim$1 km/s. We also characterize the surviving comets' distribution function. Surviving planets orbiting a WD can prevent the accretion of XOC comets by the star. A planet's 'dynamical barrier' is effective at preventing comet accretion if the energy kick imparted by the planet exceeds the comet's orbital binding energy. By modifying the loss cone theory, we calculate the amount by which a planet reduces the WD's accretion rate. We suggest that the scarcity of volatile-enriched debris in polluted WDs is caused by an unseen population of 10-100 AU scale giant planets acting as barriers to incoming LPCs. Since 2017, two macroscopic interstellar objects have been discovered in the inner Solar System, both of which are distinct in nature. The first interstellar object, 1I/`Oumuamua, passed within $\sim63$ lunar distances of the Earth, appeared asteroidal lacking detectable levels of gas or dust loss, yet exhibited a nongravitational acceleration. 1I/`Oumuamua's brief visit left open questions regarding its provenance which has given rise to many theoretical hypotheses, including an icy comet lacking a dust coma, an elongated fragment of a planet or planetesimal that was tidally disrupted, and an ultra-porous fractal aggregate. The second interstellar object, 2I/Borisov, was distinct from 1I/`Oumuamua in terms of its bulk physical properties and displayed a definitive cometary tail. We review the discoveries of these objects, the subsequent observations and characterizations, and the theoretical hypotheses regarding their origins. We describe 1I/`Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov in the context of active asteroids and comets in the Solar System. The discovery of these two objects implies a galactic-wide population of $\sim10^{26}$ similar bodies. In 2017, 1I/`Oumuamua was identified as the first known interstellar object in the Solar System. Although typical cometary activity tracers were not detected, `Oumuamua exhibited a significant non-gravitational acceleration. To date there is no explanation that can reconcile these constraints. Due to energetic considerations, outgassing of hyper-volatile molecules is favored over heavier volatiles like H$_2$O and CO$_2$. However, there are are theoretical and/or observational inconsistencies with existing models invoking the sublimation of pure H$_2$, N$_2$, and CO. Non-outgassing explanations require fine-tuned formation mechanisms and/or unrealistic progenitor production rates. Here we report that the acceleration of `Oumuamua is due to the release of entrapped molecular hydrogen which formed through energetic processing of an H$_2$O-rich icy body. In this model, `Oumuamua began as an icy planetesimal that was irradiated at low temperatures by cosmic rays during its interstellar journey, and experienced warming during its passage through the Solar System. This explanation is supported by a large body of experimental work showing that H$_2$ is efficiently and generically produced from H$_2$O ice processing, and that the entrapped H$_2$ is released over a broad range of temperatures during annealing of the amorphous water matrix. We show that this mechanism can explain many of `Oumuamua's peculiar properties without fine-tuning. In recent years, there have been a growing number of observations indicating the presence of rocky material in short-period orbits around white dwarfs. In this Letter, we revisit the prospects for habitability around these post-main-sequence star systems. In addition to the typically considered radiative input luminosity, potentially habitable planets around white dwarfs are also subjected to significant tidal heating. The combination of these two heating sources can, for a narrow range of planetary properties and orbital parameters, continuously maintain surface temperatures amenable for habitability for planets around white dwarfs over time scales up to 10 Gyr. We show that for a specific locus of orbital parameter space, tidal heating can substantially extend the timescale of continuous habitability for a planet around a white dwarf., Comment: Accepted to ApJL

We report a statistically significant detection of nongravitational acceleration on the sub-kilometer near-Earth asteroid (523599) 2003 RM. Due to its orbit, 2003 RM experiences favorable observing apparitions every 5 years. Thus, since its discovery, 2003 RM has been extensively tracked with ground-based optical facilities in 2003, 2008, 2013, and 2018. We find that the observed plane-of-sky positions cannot be explained with a purely gravity-driven trajectory. Including a transverse nongravitational acceleration allows us to match all observational data, but its magnitude is inconsistent with perturbations typical of asteroids such as the Yarkovsky effect or solar radiation pressure. After ruling out that the orbital deviations are due to a close approach or collision with another asteroid, we hypothesize that this anomalous acceleration is caused by unseen cometary outgassing. A detailed search for evidence of cometary activity with archival and deep observations from Pan-STARRS and the VLT does not reveal any detectable dust production. However, the best-fitting H$_2$O sublimation model allows for brightening due to activity consistent with the scatter of the data. We estimate the production rate required for H$_2$O outgassing to power the acceleration, and find that, assuming a diameter of 300 m, 2003 RM would require Q(H$_2$O)$\sim10^{23}$ molec s$^{-1}$ at perihelion. We investigate the recent dynamical history of 2003 RM and find that the object most likely originated in the mid-to-outer main belt ($\sim86\%$) as opposed to from the Jupiter-family comet region ($\sim11\%$). We report statistically significant detections of non-radial nongravitational accelerations based on astrometric data in the photometrically inactive objects 1998 KY$_{26}$, 2005 VL$_1$, 2016 NJ$_{33}$, 2010 VL$_{65}$, 2016 RH$_{120}$, and 2010 RF$_{12}$. The magnitudes of the nongravitational accelerations are greater than those typically induced by the Yarkovsky effect and there is no radiation-based, non-radial effect that can be so large. Therefore, we hypothesize that the accelerations are driven by outgassing, and calculate implied H$_2$O production rates for each object. We attempt to reconcile outgassing induced acceleration with the lack of visible comae or photometric activity via the absence of surface dust and low levels of gas production. Although these objects are small and some are rapidly rotating, surface cohesive forces are stronger than the rotational forces and rapid rotation alone cannot explain the lack of surface debris. It is possible that surface dust was removed previously, perhaps via outgassing activity that increased the rotation rates to their present day value. We calculate dust production rates of order $\sim10^{-4}$ g s$^{-1}$ in each object assuming that the nuclei are bare, within the upper limits of dust production from a sample stacked image of 1998 KY$_{26}$ of $\dot{M}_{\rm Dust}<0.2$ g s$^{-1}$. This production corresponds to brightness variations of order $\sim0.0025\%$, which are undetectable in extant photometric data. We assess the future observability of each of these targets, and find that the orbit of 1998 KY$_{26}$ -- which is also the target for the extended Hayabusa2 mission -- exhibits favorable viewing geometry before 2025., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in the Planetary Science Journal

In this paper, we present an open source software ($\texttt{SAMUS}$) which simulates constant-density, constant-viscosity liquid bodies subject to tidal forces for a range of assumed viscosites and sizes. This software solves the Navier-Stokes equations on a finite-element mesh, incorporating the centrifugal, Coriolis, self-gravitational, and tidal forces. The primary functionality is to simulate the deformation of minor bodies under the influence of tidal forces. It may therefore be used to constrain the composition and physical structure of bodies experiencing significant tidal forces, such as 99942 Apophis and 1I/`Oumuamua. We demonstrate that $\texttt{SAMUS}$ will be useful to constrain the material properties of Apophis during its near-Earth flyby in 2029. Depending on the material properties, Apophis may experience an area change of up to 0.5\%, with similar effects on the photometric brightness. We also apply $\texttt{SAMUS}$ to constrain the material dynamic viscosity of 1I/`Oumuamua, the first interstellar object discovered traversing the inner Solar System. `Oumuamua experienced a close approach to the Sun at perihelion ($q\simeq 0.25$ au) during which there were significant tidal forces that may have caused deformation of the body. This deformation could have lead to observable changes in the photometric light curve based on the material properties. The application of $\texttt{SAMUS}$ to produce synthetic observations which incorporate tidal deformation effects demonstrate that no deformation -- an infinite dynamic viscosity -- best reproduces the photometric data. While these results indicate that `Oumuamua did not experience significant tidal deformation, a sophisticated model incorporating non-principal axis rotation is necessary to conclusively analyze both `Oumuamua and Apophis., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables. Interstellar interlopers are bodies formed outside of the solar system but observed passing through it. The first two identified interlopers, 1I/`Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov, exhibited unexpectedly different physical properties. 1I/`Oumuamua appeared unresolved and asteroid-like whereas 2I/Borisov was a more comet-like source of both gas and dust. Both objects moved under the action of non-gravitational acceleration. These interlopers and their divergent properties provide our only window so far onto an enormous and previously unknown galactic population. The number density of such objects is $\sim$ 0.1 AU$^{-3}$ which, if uniform across the galactic disk, would imply 10$^{25}$ to 10$^{26}$ similar objects in the Milky Way. The interlopers likely formed in, and were ejected from, the protoplanetary disks of young stars. High energy X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) radiation from young stars impacts planetary atmospheric chemistry and mass loss. The active $\sim 22$ Myr M dwarf AU Mic hosts two exoplanets orbiting interior to its debris disk. Therefore, this system provides a unique opportunity to quantify the effects of stellar XUV irradiation on planetary atmospheres as a function of both age and orbital separation. In this paper we present over 5 hours of Far-UV (FUV) observations of AU Mic taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS; 1070-1360 Angstrom) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We provide an itemization of $120$ emission features in the HST/COS FUV spectrum and quantify the flux contributions from formation temperatures ranging from $10^4-10^7$ K. We detect 13flares in the FUV white-light curve with energies ranging from $10^{29} - 10^{31}$ ergs. The majority of the energy in each of these flares is released from the transition region between the chromosphere and the corona. There is a 100$\times$ increase in flux at continuum wavelengths $\lambda < 1100$ Angstrom in each flare which may be caused by thermal Bremsstrahlung emission. We calculate that the baseline atmospheric mass-loss rate for AU Mic b is $\sim 10^8$ g s$^{-1}$, although this rate can be as high as $\sim 10^{14}$ g s$^{-1}$ during flares with $L_\textrm{flare} \simeq 10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Based on the occurrence rates implied by the discoveries of 1I/`Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov, the forthcoming Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) should detect $\ge1$ interstellar objects every year (Hoover et al. 2021). We advocate for future measurements of the production rates of H$_2$O, CO$_2$ and CO in these objects to estimate their carbon to oxygen ratios, which traces formation locations within their original protoplanetary disks. We review similar measurements for Solar System comets, which indicate formation interior to the CO snowline. By quantifying the relative processing in the interstellar medium and Solar System, we estimate that production rates will not be representative of primordial compositions for the majority of interstellar comets. Preferential desorption of CO and CO$_2$ relative to H$_2$O in the interstellar medium implies that measured C/O ratios represent lower limits on the primordial ratios. Specifically, production rate ratios of ${\rm Q}({\rm CO})/{\rm Q}({\rm H_2O})<.2$ and ${\rm Q}({\rm CO})/{\rm Q}({\rm H_2O})>1$ likely indicate formation interior and exterior to the CO snowline, respectively. The high C/O ratio of 2I/Borisov implies that it formed exterior to the CO snowline. We provide an overview of the currently operational facilities capable of obtaining these measurements that will constrain the fraction of ejected comets that formed exterior to the CO snowline. The discovery of the first two interstellar objects implies that, on average, every star contributes a substantial amount of material to the galactic population by ejecting such bodies from the host system. Since scattering is a chaotic process, a comparable amount of material should be injected into the inner regions of each system that ejects comets. For comets that are transported inwards and interact with planets, this Letter estimates the fraction of material that is accreted or outward-scattered as a function of planetary masses and orbital parameters. These calculations indicate that planets with escape velocities smaller than their current day orbital velocities will efficiently accrete comets. We estimate the accretion efficiency for members of the current census of extrasolar planets, and find that planetary populations including but not limited to hot and warm Jupiters, sub-Neptunes and super-Earths can efficiently capture incoming comets. This cometary enrichment may have important ramifications for post-formation atmospheric composition and chemistry. As a result, future detections and compositional measurements of interstellar comets will provide direct measurements of material that potentially enriched a sub-population of the extrasolar planets. Finally, we estimate the efficiency of this enrichment mechanism for extrasolar planets that will be observed with the $\textit{James Webb Space Telescope}$ (JWST). All stars produce explosive surface events such as flares and coronal mass ejections. These events are driven by the release of energy stored in coronal magnetic fields, generated by the stellar dynamo. However, it remains unclear if the energy deposition in the magnetic fields is driven by direct or alternating currents. Recently, we presented observational measurements of the flare intensity distributions for a sample of $\sim10^5$ stars across the main sequence observed by $\textit{TESS}$, all of which exhibited power-law distributions similar to those observed in the Sun, albeit with varying slopes. Here we investigate the mechanisms required to produce such a distribution of flaring events via direct current energy deposition, in which coronal magnetic fields braid, reconnect, and produce flares. We adopt a topological model for this process which produces a power-law distribution of energetic flaring events. We expand this model to include the Coriolis effect, which we demonstrate produces a shallower distribution of flare energies in stars that rotate more rapidly (corresponding to a weaker decline in occurrence rates toward increasing flare energies). We present tentative evidence for the predicted rotation-power-law index correlation in the observations. We advocate for future observations of stellar flares that would improve our measurements of the power-law exponents, and yield key insights into the underlying dynamo mechanisms that underpin the self-similar flare intensity distributions., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The compositional and morphological evolution of minor bodies in the Solar System is primarily driven by the evolution of their heliocentric distances, as the level of incident solar radiation regulates cometary activity. We investigate the dynamical transfer of Centaurs into the inner Solar System, facilitated by mean motion resonances with Jupiter and Saturn. The recently discovered object, P/2019 LD2, will transition from the Centaur region to the inner Solar System in 2063. In order to contextualize LD2, we perform N-body simulations of a population of Centaurs and JFCs. Objects between Jupiter and Saturn with Tisserand parameter $T_J\sim$3 are transferred onto orbits with perihelia $q<4$au within the next 1000 years with notably high efficiency. Our simulations show that there may be additional LD2-like objects transitioning into the inner Solar System in the near-term future, all of which have low $\Delta$V with respect to Jupiter. We calculate the distribution of orbital elements resulting from a single Jovian encounter and show that objects with initial perihelia close to Jupiter are efficiently scattered to $q<4$au. Moreover, approximately $55\%$ of the transitioning objects in our simulated population experience at least 1 Jovian encounter prior to reaching $q<4$au. We demonstrate that a spacecraft stationed near Jupiter would be well-positioned to rendezvous, orbit match, and accompany LD2 into the inner Solar System, providing an opportunity to observe the onset of intense activity in a pristine comet $\textit{in situ}$. The recently discovered population of interstellar objects presents us with the opportunity to characterize material from extrasolar planetary and stellar systems up close. The forthcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will provide an unprecedented increase in sensitivity to these objects compared to the capabilities of currently operational observational facilities. We generate a synthetic population of `Oumuamua-like objects drawn from their galactic kinematics, and identify the distribution of impact parameters, eccentricities, hyperbolic velocities and sky locations of objects detectable with the LSST, assuming no cometary activity. This population is characterized by a clustering of trajectories in the direction of the solar apex and anti-apex, centered at orbital inclinations of $\sim90^\circ$. We identify the ecliptic or solar apex as the optimal sky locations to search for future interstellar objects as a function of survey limiting magnitude. Moreover, we identify the trajectories of detectable objects that will be reachable for \textit{in-situ} rendezvous with a dedicated mission with the capabilities of the forthcoming \textit{Comet Interceptor} or proposed \textit{Bridge} concept. By scaling our fractional population statistics with the inferred spatial number density, we estimate that the LSST will detect of order $\sim 15$ interstellar objects over the course of its $\sim10$ year observational campaign. Furthermore, we find that there should be $\sim1-3$ and $\sim0.0007-0.001$ reachable targets for missions with propulsion capabilities comparable to \textit{Bridge} and \textit{Comet Interceptor}, respectively. Self-organized criticality describes a class of dynamical systems that maintain themselves in an attractor state with no intrinsic length or time scale. Fundamentally, this theoretical construct requires a mechanism for instability that may trigger additional instabilities locally via dissipative processes. This concept has been invoked to explain nonlinear dynamical phenomena such as featureless energy spectra that have been observed empirically for earthquakes, avalanches, and solar flares. If this interpretation proves correct, it implies that the solar coronal magnetic field maintains itself in a critical state via a delicate balance between the dynamo-driven injection of magnetic energy and the release of that energy via flaring events. All-sky high-cadence surveys like the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) provide the necessary data to compare the energy distribution of flaring events in stars of different spectral types to that observed in the Sun. We identified $\sim 10^6$ flaring events on $\sim 10^5$ stars observed by TESS at 2-minute cadence. By fitting the flare frequency distribution for different mass bins, we find that all main sequence stars exhibit distributions of flaring events similar to that observed in the Sun, independent of their mass or age. This may suggest that stars universally maintain a critical state in their coronal topologies via magnetic reconnection events. At present, there exists no consensus in the astronomical community regarding either the bulk composition or the formation mechanism for the interstellar object 1I/2017 U1 ('Oumuamua). With the goal of assessing the merits of the various scenarios that have been suggested to explain 'Oumuamua's appearance and observed properties, we report a number of new analyses and provide an up-to-date review of the current hypotheses. We consider the interpretations that can reconcile 'Oumuamua's observed non-Keplerian trajectory with the non-detection of traditional cometary volatiles. We examine the ability of these proposed formation pathways to populate the galaxy with sufficient interstellar objects such that the detection of 'Oumuamua by Pan-STARRS would be statistically-favored. We consider two exotic ices, hydrogen and nitrogen, showing that the frigid temperature requirement for the former and the necessary formation efficiency of the latter pose serious difficulties for these interpretations. Via order-of-magnitude arguments and hydrodynamical cratering simulations, we show that impacts on extrasolar Kuiper Belt analogues are not expected to generate N2 ice fragments as large as 'Oumuamua. In addition, we discuss observational tests to confirm the presence of these ices in future interstellar objects. Next, we examine the explanations that attribute 'Oumuamua's properties to other compositions: ultra-porous dust aggregates and thin membranes powered by solar radiation pressure, among others. While none of these hypotheses are perfectly satisfactory, we make predictions that will be testable by the Vera Rubin Observatory to resolve the tension introduced by 'Oumuamua., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. 20 pages, 3 figures

The large scale structure of the Solar System has been shaped by a transient dynamical instability that may have been triggered by the interaction of the giants planets with a massive primordial disk of icy debris. In this work, we investigate the conditions under which this primordial disk could have coalesced into planets using analytic and numerical calculations. In particular, we perform numerical simulations of the Solar System's early dynamical evolution that account for the viscous stirring and collisional damping within the disk. We demonstrate that if collisional damping would have been sufficient to maintain a temperate velocity dispersion, Earth mass trans-Neptunian planets could have emerged within a timescale of 10 Myr. Therefore, our results favor a scenario wherein the dynamical instability of the outer Solar System began immediately upon the dissipation of the gaseous nebula to avoid the overproduction of Earth mass planets in the outer Solar System., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJL

The first interstellar object, 1I/2017 U1 (`Oumuamua), exhibited several unique properties, including an extreme aspect ratio, a lack of typical cometary volatiles, and a deviation from a Keplerian trajectory. Several authors have hypothesized that the non-gravitational acceleration was caused by either cometary outgassing or radiation pressure. Here, we investigate the spin dynamics of `Oumuamua under the action of high surface area fractional activity and radiation pressure. We demonstrate that a series of transient jets that migrate across the illuminated surface will not produce a secular increase in the spin rate. We produce 3D tumbling simulations that approximate the dynamics of a surface covering jet, and show that the resulting synthetic light curve and periodogram are reasonably consistent with the observations. Moreover, we demonstrate that radiation pressure also produces a steady spin-state. While carbon monoxide (CO) has been dismissed as a possible accelerant because of its non-detection in emission by $\textit{Spitzer}$, we show that outgassing from a surface characterized by a modest covering fraction of CO ice can satisfy the non-ballistic dynamics for a plausible range of assumed bulk densities and surface albedos. $\textit{Spitzer}$ upper limits on CO emission are, however, inconsistent with the CO production necessary to provide the acceleration. Nonetheless, an ad hoc but physically plausible explanation is that the activity level varied greatly during the time that the trajectory was monitored. We reproduce the astrometric analysis presented in Micheli et al. Radiation-dust driven outflows, where radiation pressure on dust grains accelerates gas, occur in many astrophysical environments. Almost all previous numerical studies of these systems have assumed that the dust was perfectly-coupled to the gas. However, it has recently been shown that the dust in these systems is unstable to a large class of resonant drag instabilities (RDIs) which de-couple the dust and gas dynamics and could qualitatively change the nonlinear outcome of these outflows. We present the first simulations of radiation-dust driven outflows in stratified, inhomogeneous media, including explicit grain dynamics and a realistic spectrum of grain sizes and charge, magnetic fields and Lorentz forces on grains (which dramatically enhance the RDIs), Coulomb and Epstein drag forces, and explicit radiation transport allowing for different grain absorption and scattering properties. In this paper we consider conditions resembling giant molecular clouds (GMCs), HII regions, and distributed starbursts, where optical depths are modest, single-scattering effects dominate radiation-dust coupling, Lorentz forces dominate over drag on grains, and the fastest-growing RDIs are similar, such as magnetosonic and fast-gyro RDIs. These RDIs generically produce strong size-dependent dust clustering, growing nonlinear on timescales that are much shorter than the characteristic times of the outflow. The instabilities produce filamentary and plume-like or 'horsehead' nebular morphologies that are remarkably similar to observed dust structures in GMCs and HII regions. Additionally, in some cases they strongly alter the magnetic field structure and topology relative to filaments. Due to the chaotic nature of planetary dynamics, there is a non-zero probability that Mercury's orbit will become unstable in the future. Previous efforts have estimated the probability of this happening between 3 and 5 billion years in the future using a large number of direct numerical simulations with an N-body code, but were not able to obtain accurate estimates before 3 billion years in the future because Mercury instability events are too rare. In this paper we use a new rare event sampling technique, Quantile Diffusion Monte Carlo (QDMC), to estimate that the probability of a Mercury instability event in the next 2 billion years is approximately $10^{-4}$ in the REBOUND N-body code. We show that QDMC provides unbiased probability estimates at a computational cost of up to 100 times less than direct numerical simulation. As a modern musician and cultural icon, Taylor Swift has earned worldwide acclaim via pieces which predominantly draw upon the complex dynamics of personal and interpersonal experiences. Here we show, for the first time, how Swift's lyrical and melodic structure have evolved in their representation of emotions over a timescale of $\tau\sim14$ yr. Previous progress on this topic has been challenging based on the sheer volume of the relevant discography, and that uniquely identifying a song that optimally describes a hypothetical emotional state represents a multi-dimensional and complex task. To quantify the emotional state of a song, we separate the criteria into the level of optimism ($H$) and the strength of commitment to a relationship ($R$), based on lyrics and chordal tones. We apply these criteria to a set of 149 pieces spanning almost the entire repertoire. We find an overall trend toward positive emotions in stronger relationships, with a best-fit linear relationship of $R=0.642^{+0.086}_{-0.053}H-1.74^{+0.39}_{-0.29}$. We find no significant trends in mean happiness ($H$) within individual albums over time. The mean relationship score ($R$) shows trends which we speculate may be due to age and the global pandemic. We provide tentative indications that partners with blue eyes and/or bad reputations may lead to overall less positive emotions, while those with green or indigo-colored eyes may produce more positive emotions and stronger relationships. However, we stress that these trends are based on small sample sizes, and more data are necessary to validate them. Permanently deformed objects in binary systems can experience complex rotation evolution, arising from the extensively studied effect of spin-orbit coupling as well as more nuanced dynamics arising from spin-spin interactions. The ability of an object to sustain an aspheroidal shape largely determines whether or not it will exhibit non-trivial rotational behavior. In this work, we adopt a simplified model of a gravitationally interacting primary and satellite pair, where each body's quadrupole moment is approximated by two diametrically opposed point masses. After calculating the net gravitational torque on the satellite from the primary, and the associated equations of motion, we employ a Hamiltonian formalism which allows for a perturbative treatment of the spin-orbit and retrograde and prograde spin-spin coupling states. By analyzing the resonances individually and collectively, we determine the criteria for resonance overlap and the onset of chaos, as a function of orbital and geometric properties of the binary. We extend the 2D planar geometry to calculate the obliquity evolution, and find that satellites in spin-spin resonances undergo precession when inclined out of the plane, but do not tumble. We apply our resonance overlap criteria to the contact binary system (216) Kleopatra, and find that its satellites, Cleoselene and Alexhelios, may plausibly be exhibiting chaotic rotational dynamics from the overlap of the spin-orbit and retrograde spin-spin resonances. `Oumuamua (I1 2017) was the first macroscopic ($l\sim100\,{\rm m}$) body observed to traverse the inner solar system on an unbound hyperbolic orbit. Its light curve displayed strong periodic variation, and it showed no hint of a coma or emission from molecular outgassing. Astrometric measurements indicate that 'Oumuamua experienced non-gravitational acceleration on its outbound trajectory, but energy balance arguments indicate this acceleration is inconsistent with a water ice sublimation-driven jet of the type exhibited by solar system comets. We show that all of `Oumaumua's observed properties can be explained if it contained a significant fraction of molecular hydrogen (H$_{2}$) ice. H$_{2}$ sublimation at a rate proportional to the incident solar flux generates a surface-covering jet that reproduces the observed acceleration. Mass wasting from sublimation leads to monotonic increase in the body axis ratio, explaining `Oumuamua's shape. Back-tracing `Oumuamua's trajectory through the Solar System permits calculation of its mass and aspect ratio prior to encountering the Sun. We show that H$_{2}$-rich bodies plausibly form in the coldest dense cores of Giant Molecular Clouds, where number densities are of order $n\sim10^5$, and temperatures approach the $T=3\,{\rm K}$ background. Post-formation exposure to galactic cosmic rays implies a $\tau \sim 100$ Myr age, explaining the kinematics of `Oumuamua's inbound trajectory., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL, 8 pages, 2 figures. We report the clear detection of C$_2$ and of abundant NH$_2$ in the first prominently active interstellar comet, 2I/Borisov. We observed 2I on three nights in November 2019 at optical wavelengths 4800--9300 \AA with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral-field spectrograph on the ESO/Very Large Telescope. These data, together with observations close in time from both 0.6-m TRAPPIST telescopes, provide constraints on the production rates of species of gas in 2I's coma. From the MUSE detection on all epochs of several bands of the optical emission of the C$_2$ Swan system, a rich emission spectrum of NH$_2$ with many highly visible bands, and the red (1-0) bandhead of CN, together with violet CN detections by TRAPPIST, we infer production rates of $Q$(C$_2$) = $1.1\times10^{24}$ mol s$^{-1}$, $Q$(NH$_2$) = $4.8\times10^{24}$ mol s$^{-1}$ and $Q$(CN) = $(1.8\pm0.2)\times 10^{24}$ mol s$^{-1}$. In late November at 2.03~au, 2I had a production ratio of C$_2$/CN$=0.61$, only barely carbon-chain depleted, in contrast to earlier reports measured further from the Sun of strong carbon-chain depletion. Thus, 2I has shown evolution in its C$_2$ production rate: a parent molecule reservoir has started sublimating. At $Q$(NH$_2$)/$Q$(CN) = 2.7, this second interstellar object is enriched in NH$_2$, relative to the known Solar System sample., Comment: 5 figures. Submitted to AAS Journals

Recently Squire & Hopkins showed that charged dust grains moving through magnetized gas under the influence of any external force (e.g. radiation pressure, gravity) are subject to a spectrum of instabilities. Qualitatively distinct instability families are associated with different Alfvenic or magnetosonic waves and drift or gyro motion. We present a suite of simulations exploring these instabilities, for grains in a homogeneous medium subject to an external acceleration. We vary parameters such as the ratio of Lorentz-to-drag forces on dust, plasma $\beta$, size scale, and acceleration. All regimes studied drive turbulent motions and dust-to-gas fluctuations in the saturated state, can rapidly amplify magnetic fields into equipartition with velocity fluctuations, and produce instabilities that persist indefinitely (despite random grain motions). Different parameters produce diverse morphologies and qualitatively different features in dust, but the saturated gas state can be broadly characterized as anisotropic magnetosonic or Alfvenic turbulence. Quasi-linear theory can qualitatively predict the gas turbulent properties. Turbulence grows from small to large scales, and larger-scale modes usually drive more vigorous gas turbulence, but dust velocity and density fluctuations are more complicated. In many regimes, dust forms structures (clumps, filaments, sheets) that reach extreme over-densities (up to $\gg 10^{9}$ times mean), and exhibit substantial sub-structure even in nearly-incompressible gas. These can be even more prominent at lower dust-to-gas ratios. We investigate the vorticity-preserving properties of the compressible, second-order residual-based scheme, "RBV2". The scheme has been extensively tested on hydrodynamical problems, and has been shown to exhibit remarkably accurate results on the propagation of inviscid compressible vortices, airfoil-vortex interactions on a curvilinear mesh, vortex mergers in an astrophysical accretion disk, and the establishment of a two-dimensional inverse cascade in high-resolution turbulent simulations. Here, we demonstrate that RBV2 sustains the analytic solution for a one-dimensional shear flow. We assess the fidelity by which the algorithm maintains a skewed shear flow, and present convergence tests to quantify the magnitude of the expected numerical dispersion. We propose an adjustment to the dissipation in the algorithm that retains the vorticity-preserving qualities, and accurately incorporates external body forces, and demonstrate that it indefinitely maintains a steady-state hydrostatic equilibrium between a generic acceleration and a density gradient. We present a novel numerical assessment of vorticity preservation for discrete-wavenumber vortical modes up to the Nyquist wavenumber. We apply this assessment to RBV2 in order to quantify the extent to which the scheme preserves vorticity for the full Euler equations. We find that RBV2 perfectly preserves vorticity for modes with symmetric wavenumbers, i.e., $k_x=k_y$, and that the error increases with asymmetry. We simulate the dynamical interaction of vortices in a protoplanetary disk to demonstrate the utility of the updated scheme for rendering astrophysical flows replete with vortices and turbulence. We show that the $P\sim8\,{\rm h}$ photometric period and the astrometrically measured $A_{\rm ng}\sim2.5\times10^{-4}\,{\rm cm\,s^{-2}}$ non-gravitational acceleration (at $r\sim1.4\,{\rm AU}$) of the interstellar object 1I/2017 (`Oumuamua) can be explained by a nozzle-like venting of volatiles whose activity migrated to track the sub-solar location on the object's surface. Adopting the assumption that `Oumuamua was an elongated $a\times b \times c$ ellipsoid, this model produces a pendulum-like rotation of the body and implies a long semi-axis $a\sim 5A_{\rm ng}P^2/4\pi^2 \sim 260\,{\rm m}$. This scale agrees with the independent estimates of `Oumuamua's size that stem from its measured brightness, assuming an albedo of $p\sim0.1$, appropriate to ices that have undergone long-duration exposure to the interstellar cosmic ray flux. Using ray-tracing, we generate light curves for ellipsoidal bodies that are subject to both physically consistent sub-solar torques and to the time-varying geometry of the Sun-Earth-`Oumuamua configuration. Our synthetic light curves display variations from chaotic tumbling and changing cross-sectional illumination that are consistent with the observations, while avoiding significant secular changes in the photometric periodicity. If our model is correct, `Oumuamua experienced mass loss that wasted $\sim 10\%$ of its total mass during the $\sim 100\,{\rm d}$ span of its encounter with the inner Solar System and had an icy composition with a very low $[{\rm C}/{\rm O}]\lesssim 0.003$. Our interpretation of `Oumuamua's behavior is consistent with the hypothesis that it was ejected from either the outer regions of a planetesimal disk after an encounter with an embedded $M_{\rm p} \sim M_{\rm Nep}$ planet or from an exo-Oort cloud., Comment: 6 Pages, 3 Figures, Accepted for Publication in ApJL. We investigate, for the first time, the nonlinear evolution of the magnetized "resonant drag instabilities" (RDIs). We explore magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of gas mixed with (uniform) dust grains subject to Lorentz and drag forces, using the GIZMO code. The magnetized RDIs exhibit fundamentally different behaviour than the purely acoustic RDIs. The dust organizes into coherent structures and the system exhibits strong dust-gas separation. In the linear and early nonlinear regime, the growth rates agree with linear theory and the dust self-organizes into two-dimensional planes or "sheets." Eventually the gas develops fully nonlinear, saturated Alfv\'enic and compressible fast-mode turbulence, which fills the under-dense regions with a small amount of dust, and drives a dynamo which saturates at equipartition of kinetic and magnetic energy. The dust density fluctuations exhibit significant non-Gaussianity, and the power spectrum is strongly weighted towards the largest (box-scale) modes. The saturation level can be understood via quasi-linear theory, as the forcing and energy input via the instabilities becomes comparable to saturated tension forces and dissipation in turbulence. We report the first confirmation of a hot Jupiter discovered by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission: HD 202772A b. The transit signal was detected in the data from TESS Sector 1, and was confirmed to be of planetary origin through radial-velocity measurements. HD 202772A b is orbiting a mildly evolved star with a period of 3.3 days. With an apparent magnitude of V = 8.3, the star is among the brightest known to host a hot Jupiter. Based on the 27days of TESS photometry, and radial velocity data from the CHIRON and HARPS spectrographs, the planet has a mass of 1.008+/-0.074 M_J and radius of 1.562+/-0.053 R_J , making it an inflated gas giant. HD 202772A b is a rare example of a transiting hot Jupiter around a quickly evolving star. A rapid accumulation of observations and interpretation have followed in the wake of 1I `Oumuamua's passage through the inner Solar System. We briefly outline the consequences that this first detection of an interstellar asteroid implies for the planet-forming process, and we assess the near-term prospects for detecting and observing (both remotely and in situ) future Solar System visitors of this type. Drawing on detailed heat-transfer calculations that take both `Oumuamua's unusual shape and its chaotic tumbling into account, we affirm that the lack of a detectable coma in deep images of the object very likely arises from the presence of a radiation-modified coating of high molecular weight material (rather than a refractory bulk composition). Assuming that `Oumuamua is a typical representative of a larger population with a kinematic distribution similar to Population I stars in the local galactic neighborhood, we calculate expected arrival rates, impact parameters and velocities of similar objects and assess their prospects for detection using operational and forthcoming facilities. Using `Oumuamua as a proof-of-concept, we assess the prospects for missions that intercept interstellar objects (ISOs) using conventional chemical propulsion. Vortices, turbulence, and unsteady non-laminar flows are likely both prominent and dynamically important features of astrophysical disks. Such strongly nonlinear phenomena are often difficult, however, to simulate accurately, and are generally amenable to analytic treatment only in idealized form. In this paper, we explore the evolution of compressible two-dimensional flows using an implicit dual-time hydrodynamical scheme that strictly conserves vorticity (if applied to simulate inviscid flows for which Kelvin's Circulation Theorem is applicable). The algorithm is based on the work of Lerat, Falissard & Side (2007), who proposed it in the context of terrestrial applications such as the blade-vortex interactions generated by helicopter rotors. We present several tests of Lerat et al.'s vorticity-preserving approach, which we have implemented to second-order accuracy, providing side-by-side comparisons with other algorithms that are frequently used in protostellar disk simulations. The comparison codes include one based on explicit, second-order van-Leer advection, one based on spectral methods, and another that implements a higher-order Godunov solver. Our results suggest that Lerat et al's algorithm will be useful for simulations of astrophysical environments in which vortices play a dynamical role, and where strong shocks are not expected., Comment: Accepted by ApJ; 14 pages, 8 figures

We compare the average photospheric current helicity $H_c$, photospheric twist parameter $\alpha$ (a well-known proxy for the full relative magnetic helicity), and subsurface kinetic helicity $H_k$ for 194 active regions observed between 2006-2013. We use 2440 Hinode photospheric vector magnetograms, and the corresponding subsurface fluid velocity data derived from GONG (2006-2012) and HMI (2010-2013) Dopplergrams. We find a significant hemispheric bias in all three parameters. The subsurface kinetic helicity is preferentially positive in the southern hemisphere and negative in the northern hemisphere. The photospheric current helicity and the $\alpha$ parameter have the same bias for strong fields ($|B|>1000$ G) and no significant bias for weak fields (100 G $<|B|<500$ G). We find no significant region-by-region correlation between the subsurface kinetic helicity and either the strong-field current helicity or $\alpha$. Subsurface fluid motions of a given handedness correspond to photospheric helicities of both signs in approximately equal numbers. However, common variations appear in annual averages of these quantities over all regions. Furthermore, in a subset of 77 regions we find significant correlations between the temporal profiles of the subsurface and photospheric helicities. In these cases, the sign of the linear correlation coefficient matches the sign relationship between the helicities, indicating that the photospheric magnetic field twist is sensitive to the twisting motions below the surface., Comment: ApJ, accepted for publication
