This study investigates the literature on medical students' study habits and the surrounding sociocultural factors. A systematic literature review was undertaken, aiming to establish what is known, identify gaps in the literature and suggest what further research needs to be done. The review followed the PRISMA guidelines and identified 13 papers that were within the inclusion criteria. These papers were analyzed and discussed through a sociocultural lens, dividing the results into four sociocultural groupings: Personal, Behavioral, Environmental and Cognitive. The findings suggest that while sociocultural factors influence medical students' study habits, individual behaviors and attitudes predominantly guide their study decisions. The findings also suggest that there is little research into the intersection of these factors. It is recommended that the factors drawn from this systematic review be used to formulate more direct research into study habits with a magnified approach to help provide medical institutions, policymakers, and students with information to better inform their decisions and produce efficient, healthy study habits.

Active learning methodologies are an excellent educational resource for students. However, effective study techniques outside the classroom are still underutilized. The aim of this study is to carry out a theoretical essay, by means of deductive thinking, that brings the perspective of cognitive neuroscience to optimize selfdirected learning of students. One crucial finding is that memories naturally tend to fade unless there is explicit repetition in contact with the information and exclusive attention to the subject matter. In addition, effective study strategies should engage executive functions to promote active manipulation and association of information. Lastly, learning by teaching is a strategy with the potential to mobilize all these resources. Particularly, the Feynman learning method is a robust strategy supported by an extensive reflective process of information, that should be systematically tested in future work. Introduction: Brazilian nursing seems to have reached important levels of learning during the pandemic, not only because of the need to control the circulation of the new coronavirus and care for the sick. Objective: To know the learning generated from the COVID-19 pandemic among nurses. Methods: exploratory and qualitative study, carried out in August and September 2021, with tertiary health care nurses who were on the front line during the pandemic, in the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Individual interviews were carried out, based on guiding questions. For data analysis, the collective subject discourse was used. Results: As learnings generated, the participants pointed out professional aspects (theoretical/practical), as well as personal aspects (reflection of the value of the human being, family and professional fulfillment). Conclusion: The learning provided by the pandemic, while contributing to the perception that in the face of insecurity and uncertainty it is possible to learn and develop, highlights the strength of nurses, who were initially weakened during the pandemic, but which potentiated the sensitivity to new discoveries, confrontations and strengthening of their individual and collective resources. ABSTRACT Objective As the soccer culture in Brazil is more popular than schooling, this study reflected on the formal education levels of soccer (football) players through descriptive and quantitative analyses. Methods We evaluated 179 national soccer players playing various positions on different teams across six seasons (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2022). Data were collected using a questionnaire comprising the following variables: age, position in the pitch, age of professionalization, and education (years of study). The data were distributed according to the pitch position. Results The mean age, length of professional career, and professionalization age were 23±6 years, 7±5 years, and 17±2 years, respectively. In terms of education, 121 athletes (67%) completed high school, equivalent to 11 years of study. Only 5.5% completed higher education, with defensive players (goalkeepers and defenders) being the most educated at 37% (66/179). According to 2017 figures from the Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios Contínua of the Federal Government of Brazil, the schooling rate is 31.7%, wherein 46.1% of Brazilians aged 25 years or over have completed education. In this study of 179 athletes, 67% had completed high school. Thus, players outrank the Brazilian population in terms of achieving a high school education. There were marked disparities in the relative proportions of goalkeepers (85%), defensive players (68%), midfielders (63%), and forward players (64%) in terms of their education. Conclusion Our survey revealed that attending higher education remains a distant reality in Brazil.

Objective: To assess self-directed learning among medical students and their approach towards seeking medical evidence. Method: The cross-sectional study was conducted from November 30, 2021, to June 30, 2022, at the Baqai Medical University, Karachi, and comprised first to fifth year medical students of either gender. Data was collected using a structured online questionnaire which also included questions from the self-directed learning instrument. Data was analysed using SPSS 21. Results: Of the 250 students approached, 159(63.6%) responded were received; 102(64.2%) females and 57(35.8%) males. The overall mean age was 21.78±1.72 years, with 88(54.1%) subjects aged >21 years. Majority 127(79.9%) participants scored above average on the self-directed learning instrument scale, while 131(84.2%) showed satisfactory approach towards evidence-based medicine. Students with better attitude towards self-directed learning were more likely to have satisfactory approach towards evidence-based medicine, but this relationship was not significant (p=0.136). Conclusion: Medical students were found to be keen to adopt self-directed learning and practice evidence-based medicine though they have not been formally exposed to it. Learning to self-regulate is an important aspect of professionalism. Thus, in 2015-16, the University of Michigan implemented a learner-centred 'deferral' policy called 'trust and track' in the preclinical phase. This gave students the autonomy to decide whether to attend required experiences, take quizzes and exams on schedule, or submit assignments on time. Surprisingly, quiz and exam deferrals remained relatively stable, but required experience deferrals more than doubled. While late assignments were not specifically tracked, there were multiple reports of assignments being months overdue. Some reasons for deferrals exhibited questionable judgement. Behavioural patterns carried forward, with an unusual spike in deferrals of licensure exams and requests for time off in the clinical phase. Wellness indices did not improve, despite learners having more autonomy and flexibility. It became clear to us that novice learners need clear professional expectations with limits to assist in developing professional behaviours. In 2016-17, we implemented a stricter policy that set clear expectations, established limits, and provided guidance on acceptable reasons to defer. We simultaneously implemented other measures to promote wellness. The moral of the story is that 'training wheels' are needed to help early learners develop the professional behaviours expected of practising physicians.

Background:  Self-directed simulation learning (SSL) is a globally accepted teaching and learning strategy wherein student nurses take the initiative in diagnosing their learning needs, formulate learning goals, identify resources for learning, and implement relevant strategies in response to their learning needs. This autonomous learning strategy will assist student nurses in taking ownership of their learning. Consequently, student nurses exit the training programme to become lifelong learners, safe and competent professional nurses., Objectives:  This study aimed to explore and describe the experiences of student nurses' utilisation of SSL at a University in Gauteng and to make recommendation(s) to enhance the use of SSL., Method:  A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, and contextual research design was used to uncover the student nurses' experiences with the use of SSL at a University. Nineteen participants were purposively sampled. Data collection was conducted through focus group interviews. Tesch's method of data analysis was used to analyse, organise and interpret data., Results:  Theme: student nurses experience time constraints, which hinder their utilisation of SSL. Subthemes: (1) a compacted academic timetable, and (2) limited access to the clinical simulation laboratory for self-directed learning., Conclusion:  Time constraints hinder the utilisation of SSL, and this challenge threatens the acquisition of clinical skills and knowledge during the training of student nurses.Contribution: Evidence-based recommendations to enhance the utilisation of SSL at a University.

Aims of the Study: This research aimed to investigate the self-directed learning (SDL) habits of Swiss general practitioners from the German-speaking part of Switzerland, understanding how they acquire new knowledge, exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on these habits and identifying optimisation strategies for their future self-directed learning., Methods: We employed a qualitative study design, conducting semi-structured interviews with 16 general practitioners from 30 May 2022 to 06 July 2022. Thematic analysis based on a mixed deductive/inductive approach was used to gain insight into the learning activities and self-directed learning practices of the practitioners., Results: The interviewed general practitioners demonstrated a versatile approach to self-directed learning, where peer communication emerged as the most predominant learning method. It is noteworthy that the younger generation in particular showed a strong inclination for peer learning and is well prepared for the integration of advanced digital solutions for peer communication. Furthermore, a significant shift was observed in media-based self-directed learning, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital platforms and repositories for practical learning were mentioned as educational mainstays by many interviewees, reflecting a profound technological shift observed over the past 25 years and especially since the pandemic. The primary motivation for pursuing new knowledge remains patient care, although personal development and staying up-to-date with medical and technological advancements are also key motivators. Although the pandemic has undeniably accelerated the transition towards digital learning, it has also brought with it challenges such as information overload and technical difficulties. There was an evident decline in formal learning venues and physical presence during the pandemic, yet the reported value of in-person interactions remains high. Suggestions for optimising self-directed learning included enhancing digital offerings, fostering stronger peer networks and integrating more practical content., Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic has catalysed a transformation in the self-directed learning practices of general practitioners in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, underlining the importance of a balanced approach between digital and traditional learning methods. As the digital realm of self-directed learning grows, it is essential to address existing challenges and capitalise on potential advantages. Both individual networking efforts like general practitioner quality circles and initiatives from official authorities like informal self-test opportunities can play pivotal roles in refining self-directed learning practices. The findings from this study offer valuable insights for enhancing learning resources and environments that align with general practitioners' needs and preferences. Future research should investigate the ongoing impact of advanced digital technologies on self-directed learning to understand the evolving landscape in a post-pandemic world.

Background: Given the changes in the current learning environment health professionals are facing major challenges to keep up with current and updated information with the rapidly growing clinical and scientific knowledge base. Being able to identify relevant, high-quality articles, adapt or adopt to new learning strategies with an already intense workload are just a few of the main challenges. Self-directed learning is a key skill of competent health professionals and describes the process by which individuals evaluate their learning needs, goals and the resources needed for learning, however the emerging problems for professionals practicing SDL are manifold., Design: A qualitative, exploratory approach based on four research questions was used to understand how skilled neurosurgeons maintain and update their professional knowledge. Twenty-six neurosurgeons within the University Hospital of Bern completed a semi-structured interview., Results: One of the main findings concerns the differences between neurosurgeons regarding the SDL strategies they employ, which is compounded by their level of experience. All participants recognized that new or alternative learning approaches are necessary to manage the learning landscape, and for many this concerned their use of learning digital tools. Many, however, were unsure how to change their current behavior., Conclusion: The results highlight that positive factors influencing SDL in the workplace include learning leadership and support in identifying new or alternative strategies, an internal culture committed to learning as well as digital learning tools and networks. Background: Self-directed learning ability is crucial for lifelong learning. The inadequate self-directed learning ability of nursing students in China may be due to their deficiency in self-management or learning initiative., Objective: To explore the effect of online learning platform (Tronclass) combined with team-based learning on nursing students' self-directed learning and academic performance., Design: Pretest-posttest design., Participants: From March to July 2023, 69 undergraduate third-year nursing students from a university in Hunan Province were selected through a whole-group sampling method., Methods: This study used Tronclass to carry out team-based learning in the teaching process of pediatric nursing courses. It compared the self-directed learning ability nursing students before and after courses, and juxtaposed their academic performance with those of their counterparts who graduated in previous years., Results: When comparing compare motivation, self-management, teamwork and information literacy, which are four subscale aspects of the self-directed Learning Ability Scale, the post-survey scores for these four dimensions are greater than the pre-survey results. The results of the study showed a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05), in the students who engaged in Tronclass combined with team-based learning. Specifically, these students received higher midterm and final grades than to those who had already graduated and did not participate in these activities. Aims and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the current status of the core competencies and self-directed learning ability of diabetes specialist nurses and to explore the relationship between these core competencies and their self-directed learning ability., Design: A cross-sectional survey design was used., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted via a web-based questionnaire platform in China from January 14 to April 24, 2023. The survey included a general information questionnaire, a diabetes specialist nurses' core competencies self-assessment scale, and a nursing staff's self-directed learning ability evaluation scale. The data was collected online. Descriptive, correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted using SPSS 26.0 software., Results: 118 diabetes specialist nurses from 11 cities participated in this study. A positive correlation was observed between the core competencies of diabetes specialist nurses and their self-directed learning ability. The characteristics affecting the core competencies of diabetes specialist nurses included age, participation in external learning and communication and self-directed learning., Conclusions: The training of diabetes specialist nurses can focus on core competencies, and the ability to self-direct learning can be used as an entry point to customize feasible theoretical and practical courses. Aim: This study purposed to determine nursing students' self-directed learning abilities and related factors., Background: Self-directed learning is a significant and practical approach for nursing students in their lifelong learning., Design: In this study, a descriptive cross-sectional study was used to assess the level of SDL undergraduate of 411 undergraduate nursing students from four academic years., Methods: The Self-directed Learning Abilities and Related Factors Questionnaire was used to measure the Self-directed Learning Abilities of the Nursing Students. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data and a logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the factors influencing self-directed learning abilities., Results: Of the 411 nursing students, most belonged to the female group. Moreover, most of the nursing students have permanent residence in rural areas. The average score of general self-directed learning abilities of nursing students was 3.88 ± 0.3. Only 33.8 % of the respondents had a high level (mean score ≥ 4) of self-directed learning abilities. There was a significant relationship between place of residence, grade obtained in previous level education, current grade point average, academic workload, assessment methods, learning resources and self-directed learning abilities (p<0.05)., Conclusions: The self-directed learning ability level was low in this nursing student sample. Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop a maternal nursing competency reinforcement program for nursing students and assess the program’s effectiveness in Korea. Methods The maternal nursing competency reinforcement program was developed following the ADDIE model. This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed methods design that applied a non-blinded, randomized controlled trial with nursing students (28 experimental, 33 control) followed by open-ended interviews with a subset (n=7). Data were analyzed by both qualitative and quantitative analysis methods. Undergraduate medical education in China has shifted from educator-centered learning to self-directed learning (SDL) over the past few decades. Careful design of public engagement activities can enable SDL and empower medical students to pioneer public health and patient safety education. In this study, we aimed to innovate nervous system education by implementing a public engagement model that empowers students to learn about the nervous system by teaching the public. Our goal was to generate greater interest in the nervous system at the undergraduate stage, inspire students' enthusiasm to pursue a career in neurology, and ultimately, contribute to health promotion. During the nervous system module of the second year of the undergraduate curriculum, students were given the option to participate in the public engagement model. Participants were tasked with the creation of educational videos focusing on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors associated with the prevention and management of neurological diseases and their complications. The videos were made accessible to the general public through the university's official channel at the end of the semester. A total of 117 students (67.24% of all students) chose to participate in the public engagement model. Female students and those with higher Grade Point Averages in the present semester were more likely to participate. The model received strong positive feedback from participants, as students found the public engagement task helpful in learning about the nervous system module as well as in enhancing their public engagement skills. Despite the time and effort consumption, participating in the public engagement task did not affect students' exam scores. The public engagement task is an innovative model in the nervous system curriculum and has the potential to be integrated into a broader range of undergraduate courses. It empowers medical students to pioneer public health and patient safety education.

Purpose: This study evaluated the underlying subdomain structure of the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) for medical students and refined the instrument to measure the subdomains to provide evidence for construct validity. Developing self-directed learners is a well-recognized goal amongst medical educators. The SDLRS has been frequently used, however, lack of construct validity makes it difficult to interpret results., Methods: To identify the valid subdomains of the SDLRS, items were calibrated with the graded response model (GRM) and results were used to construct a 30-item short form. Short-form validity was evaluated by examining the correspondence between the total scores from the short form and the original instrument for individual students., Results: A five-subdomain model explained the SDLRS item response data reasonably well. These included: (1) initiative and independence in learning, (2) self-concept as an effective learner, (3) openness to learning opportunity, (4) love of learning, and (5) acceptance for one's own learning. The unidimensional GRM for each subdomain fits the data better than multi-dimensional models. The total scores from the refined short form and the original form were correlated at 0.98 and the mean difference was 1.33, providing evidence for validation. Nearly 91% of 179 respondents were accurately classified within the low, average, and high readiness groups., Conclusion: Sufficient evidence was obtained for the validity and reliability of the refined 30-item short-form targeting five subdomains to measure medical students' readiness to engage in self-directed learning.

Background: Self-directed learning (SDL) ability is the basis for cultivating nursing students' ability to find and solve problems, lifelong learning, and providing high-quality nursing talents for healthcare. The O-AMAS (Objective, Activation, Multi-learning, Assessment, Summary) model adheres to the teaching philosophy of student-centered, result-oriented, combines the advantages of online and offline teaching, enriching teaching resources and learning channels, diversifying teaching and evaluation methods, and emphasizing integrating and applying knowledge conducive to improving students' SDL ability and achieving teaching objectives. This study explored the course design, practical, and application effects under the O-AMAS effective teaching model in internal medicine nursing to provide a basis and reference for combining effective teaching models with blended teaching in future nursing courses., Methods: This study is a self-controlled before-after trial. The participants were 76 nursing undergraduates from Hunan Normal University. This study utilizes the O-AMAS effective teaching model to design internal medicine nursing courses and implement blended online and offline teaching. Main links: The overall course design and application are student-centered, after clarifying macro and micro multi-dimensional learning objectives, with online and offline blended teaching environments activated students' learning behavior and diversified teachers' teaching activities, then based on instant and dynamic provide effective feedback; finally, students take the initiate to make a brief and potent summary under the teacher guidance. After the course, a unified assessment of the learning effect of nursing students was conducted, including the evaluation of the SDL ability of nursing students, a final comprehensive evaluation grade, and a teaching satisfaction survey., Results: The nursing students' SDL ability scores are higher than before teaching, and the results were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The final average comprehensive evaluation grade of nursing students was 78.38 ± 7.12. More than 96% of the students are satisfied with this course., Conclusion: Applying for internal medicine nursing blended teaching integrated with the O-AMAS effective teaching model is conducive to improving nursing students' SDL ability, academic grades, and teaching satisfaction., (© 2024. In March 2020, universities in Zimbabwe temporarily closed and switched to remote learning to contain the spread of SARS Cov2 infections. The sudden change to distance learning gave autonomy to students to direct their own learning. To understand how the students at the University of Zimbabwe and Midlands State University adapted to emergency remote learning, focus group discussions and a self-administered questionnaire survey based on the self-regulated learning inventory were conducted to capture cognitive, motivational, and emotional aspects of anatomy learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns among these students' lived experiences. Two coders analyzed the data independently and discussed the codes to reach a consensus. The results showed that students at the two medical schools cognitively and meta-cognitively planned, executed and evaluated self-regulated strategies in different ways that suited their environments during the COVID-19 lockdown. Several factors, such as demographic location, home setting/situation, socioeconomic background and expertise in using online platforms, affected the students' self-directed learning. Students generally adapted well to the constraints brought about by the lockdown on their anatomy learning in order to learn effectively. This study was able to highlight important self-regulated learning strategies that were implemented during COVID-19 by anatomy learners, especially those in low-income settings, and these strategies equip teachers and learners alike in preparation for similar future situations that may result in forced remote learning of anatomy., (© 2024. Aim: This study sought to assess how the flipped classroom model of instruction affected self-directed learning readiness and learning outcomes among Nigerian nursing students enrolled in a research method class., Background: Although the effectiveness of the flipped classroom model of instruction has been thoroughly and scientifically investigated in several fields, its potential to promote self-directed learning readiness and learning outcomes in a research method class has not yet been investigated., Design: A quasi-experimental design was employed. To achieve the study's objectives, two experiments were conducted: a pre-test and a post-test., Methods: Participants were 64 400-level nursing undergraduates purposively recruited from two government-owned universities in Southeast Nigeria. The experimental group received a flipped classroom model of teaching methods, while the control group received traditional teaching methods (TTM) from April - July 2021. A validated self-directed learning readiness scale and multiple-choice questions derived from a research method course were used to gather data. A structured questionnaire was used to collect demographic data. Descriptive statistics of frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations were applied to the collected data. A one-factor independent measure analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and an independent sample t-test was employed to compare the pre-and post-test results of FCM and TTM students., Results: Pre-test results from self-directed learning readiness showed overall scores of 3.99 ± 0.39 and 3.95 ± 0.35 for the traditional teaching method and flipped classroom model, respectively, while post-test results showed overall scores of 3.84 ± 077 for the traditional teaching method and 4.01 ± 0.81 for flipped classroom model. The difference in mean scores between the pre-and post-tests was statistically significant (p=0.030). Pre- (p=.001) and post- (p =.025) learning outcomes for the flipped classroom model were significantly higher than those for the traditional teaching method., Conclusion: The flipped classroom model of instruction had a positive impact on nursing students' readiness for self-directed learning and learning outcomes in the research course. The objective of this study was to analyze the quality of videos on oral lichen planus (OLP) available in YouTubeTM. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted by searching the video sharing platform YouTube™. Videos aimed at clarifying the etiological and clinical characteristics, diagnostic criteria, treatment, and prognosis of OLP were included. A total of 481 videos were retrieved and 37 were included in the study according to the selection criteria established. Most of the videos evaluated (86.5%; n = 32) were produced by independent users. The average reliability was 1.8 and quality assessment classified only three videos (8.1%) as having good/excellent quality. A significant correlation was observed between the length of the video analyzed and its quality and reliability (p < 0.05), as well as between the reliability and usefulness of the video (p = 0.03). YouTubeTM has become a leading source of information for the general population. However, a significant number of these videos have a low quality. Students, professionals, and healthcare providers must be more actively involved in providing clear, accurate, and reliable evidence-based information in an accessible language in order to enable significant improvement in patient care delivery. YouTube™ has become a leading source of information for the general population. However, a significant number of these videos have a low quality. Students, professionals, and healthcare providers must be more actively involved in providing clear, accurate, and reliable evidence-based information in an accessible language in order to enable significant improvement in patient care delivery.

Introduction: the effectiveness of the flipped classroom model (FCM) method for building self-directed learning readiness (SDLR) in a research methodology course has not yet been scientifically researched. This study aims to assess the effect of FCM on SDLR among Nigerian nursing students enrolled in a research methodology course., Methods: sixty-four 400-level nursing students from two government-owned universities in Southeast Nigeria were recruited for this quasi-experimental study. They were randomly divided into two groups, the experimental group, and the control group, and exposed to FCM and conventional teaching methods (CTM) throughout the months of April and July 2021. Before and after the intervention, the validated self-directed learning readiness scale (SDLRS) was used to gather data, and a structured questionnaire was used to collect demographic data., Results: the SDLR was high if the SDLRS mean score was ≥3.75. Pre-test results from SDLR showed overall scores of 3.99 ± 0.39 and 3.95 ± 0.35 for CTM and FCM, respectively, while post-test results showed overall scores of 3.84 ± 0.77 for CTM and 4.01 ± 0.81 for FCM. Purpose This study aimed to evaluate students’ perception of team-based learning (TBL) amongst a cohort exposed to this methodology for the first time at a university in the United Kingdom. Methods Between November and December 2018, 26 first-year Master of Pharmacy and 90 second-year Biomedical Science students of the School of Life Sciences, University of Sussex, United Kingdom were invited to participate and requested to complete a questionnaire that contained quantitative and qualitative questions. The quantitative component was based on the Team-Based Learning Student Assessment Instrument (TBL-SAI). It additionally contained questions about key student characteristics. Results The response rate was 60% (70 of 116); of the participants, 74% (n=52) were females and 26% (n=18) males. The percentage of agreement in the TBL-SAI suggested a favourable response to TBL. The overall mean score for the TBL-SAI was 115.6 (standard deviation, 5.6; maximum score, 140), which was above the threshold of 102, thus suggesting a preference for TBL. Statistically significant differences were not found according to demographic characteristics. Students who predicted a final grade of ≥70% strongly agreed that TBL helped improve their grades. Some students highlighted issues with working in teams, and only 56% of students agreed that they could learn better in a team setting. Conclusion This study shows that students exposed to TBL for the first time favoured several aspects of TBL. However, more focused strategies including team-building activities and expert facilitation skills could potentially tackle resistance to working in teams.

Importance: Undergraduate medical education increasingly relies on asynchronous, virtual learning; and medical educators have observed students engaging in self-directed learning outside of their institutional curriculum using widely available third-party resources. If medical educators better understand how students are learning, they may uncover novel opportunities to improve preclerkship education., Objective: To explore how and why preclerkship medical students use third-party learning resources., Design, Setting, and Participants: This qualitative study recruited second-year medical students from 7 public and private allopathic US medical schools and conducted 7 virtual focus groups (1 per institution) from September 2022 to January 2023, exploring how and why students use third-party resources. Data were iteratively analyzed in parallel with focus groups using constructivist grounded theory methodology. Data analysis was performed from October 2022 to February 2023., Results: Fifty-eight second-year US medical students who had used a third-party resource at least once participated; 36 (61%) identified as women; 13 (23%) identified as Asian, 6 (11%) as Black, 30 (53%) as White, 6 (11%) as multiracial, and 4 (7%) as other; 6 (10%) identified as Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin, and 52 (90%) identified as non-Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin; 48 (83%) were aged 23 to 25 years. Participants described engaging in a cyclical process of deciding whether and how to use third-party resources. Four broad themes were identified: (1) hearing about resources, (2) selecting resources, (3) using resources, and (4) tensions and possible solutions. Participants largely heard about third-party resources from peers and turned to resources out of dissatisfaction with some aspect of their medical school curriculum. Students used resources in various ways that were user-dependent and context-dependent. Participants endorsed multiple benefits over their in-house curricula, particularly efficiency, clarity, and concision. Tensions included navigating resource drawbacks and the perception of an antagonistic relationship between medical schools and third-party resources. Participants suggested that medical schools examine the resources, recommend specific ones, integrate them into the curriculum, and subsidize their cost., Conclusions and Relevance: In this qualitative study of preclerkship medical student use of third-party resources, participants perceived that the resources had numerous benefits for learning and suggested that medical schools should more formally acknowledge and integrate their use.

Purpose: The goal of this systematic review was to examine self-directed learning (SDL) assessment practices in undergraduate health professions education., Methods: Seven electronic databases were searched (PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, ERIC, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science) to retrieve English-language articles published between 2015 and July of 2022, investigating assessment of SDL learning outcomes. Extracted data included the sample size, field of study, study design, SDL activity type, SDL assessment method, number of SDL assessments used, study quality, number of SDL components present utilising the framework the authors developed, and SDL activity outcomes. We also assessed relationships between SDL assessment method and number of SDL components, study quality, field of study, and study outcomes., Results: Of the 141 studies included, the majority of study participants were medical (51.8%) or nursing (34.8%) students. The most common SDL assessment method used was internally-developed perception surveys (49.6%). When evaluating outcomes for SDL activities, most studies reported a positive or mixed/neutral outcome (58.2% and 34.8%, respectively). There was a statistically significant relationship between both number and type of assessments used, and study quality, with knowledge assessments (median-IQR 11.5) being associated with higher study quality ( p  < 0.001). Less than half (48.9%) of the studies used more than one assessment method to evaluate the effectiveness of SDL activities. Having more than one assessment (mean 9.49) was associated with higher quality study ( p  < 0.001)., Conclusions: The results of our systematic review suggest that SDL assessment practices within undergraduate health professions education vary greatly, as different aspects of SDL were leveraged and implemented by diverse groups of learners to meet different learning needs and professional accreditation requirements. Evidence-based best practices for the assessment of SDL across undergraduate healthcare professions education should include the use of multiple assessments, with direct and indirect measures, to more accurately assess student performance.

Introduction: Massive open online courses provide the opportunity to train health professionals and researchers from Latin America in global health., Objetives: To determine the global offer of massive open online courses in global health and the characteristics of their content., Material and Methods: We examined massive open online course platforms to compile the global health offerings. The search had no time restriction and was last conducted in November, 2021. The search strategy only included the descriptor “global health”. We obtained the characteristics of the courses, their content, and the global health domain covered. These data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, reporting absolute and relative frequencies., Results: Our search strategy identified 4,724 massive open online courses. Of these, only 92 were related to global health. Most of these courses (n=44; 47.8%) were offered through Coursera. More than half (n=50; 54.4%) of the MOOCs were conducted by U.S.A. institutions and in English language (n=90; 97.8%). Most courses focused on “globalization of health and healthcare” (n=24; 26.1%), followed by the domains “capacity building” (n=16; 17.4%), “global burden of disease” and “social and environmental determinants of health” (n=15; 16.3%)., Conclusions: We found a high offer of massive open online courses on global health. These courses covered the global health competencies required for health professionals.
