Defective pixels always exist in an uncooled infrared focal plane array (IR FPA), and have a significant impact on image quality. To fundamentally reduce defective pixels and improve IR FPA’s reliability, failure analysis (FA) is critically needed. In this work, a self-test (ST) method is proposed to detect the structural failures of uncooled IR FPA. Based on the lumped thermal parameters of a pixel, a structural failures model is presented, and an electrical circuit is designed. The insufficient released, normal released, over released and contaminated IR FPAs are measured. The measured results show that their lumped thermal parameters have a clear differentiation, which not only experimentally verifies the validity of this method, but also shows that it is an effective method for nondestructive analysis of structural failures.

In the paper the high-speed architecture of built-in self test (BIST) for double data rate synchronous dynamic random access memory (DDR SDRAM) is proposed. The BIST proposed can make self testing at its operating frequency that improves the reliability of the results obtained.

Software‐based self‐test (SBST) method is one of the widely used test techniques in processors. SBST scheme provides high fault coverage but incurs long detection latencies in case of intermittent faults (IFs) in online testing mode, due to large size and longer execution time of the test codes. A study of fragmented SBST testing approaches is conducted to select the most efficient fragmented testing strategy. For the selected fragmented SBST method, a reliable set of SBST code fragments with minimal fault detection latency is determined. However, it incurs inconsiderable overall fault coverage drop, compared to the coverage of the complete SBST test code. From experimental results on MIPS Processor, a set of 20 fragments of test tasks with 80% individual fault coverage was observed to have the highest reliability of all sets of fragments. A larger test task (i.e. complete SBST test code) with 96.3% coverage and a test period of 8 ms was replaced by these 20 fragments, which provided an overall coverage of 96% with an individual test period of 0.4 ms, to detect the same set of IFs.

Zusammenfassung Ziel der Studie Eine proaktive Suche nach möglichem Reha-Bedarf seitens der 13 Rehabilitationsträger findet in Deutschland kaum statt, obwohl in einigen Versichertengruppen ungedeckter Reha-Bedarf vermutet wird. Vor diesem Hintergrund wurde die Wirksamkeit der Einladung zu einem webbasierten Selbsttest auf Reha-Bedarf als neuer Zugangsweg in die medizinische Rehabilitation evaluiert. Die Arbeitshypothese war, dass die Intervention zu mehr bewilligten Rehabilitationsanträgen im Nachbeobachtungszeitraum von 22 Monaten führt und sich dieser Effekt auch nach Kontrolle weiterer Einflussgrößen zeigt. Methodik Zur Wirksamkeitsprüfung wurde eine randomisierte, kontrollierte Studie mit N=8000 Versicherten zweier regionaler Rentenversicherungsträger durchgeführt. Versicherte der Interventionsgruppe (IG; n=4000) wurden postalisch über den Selbsttest informiert und erhielten individuelle Zugangsdaten hierzu (Benutzer-ID und PIN). Die Kontrollgruppe (KG; n=4000) erhielt keine Informationen über den Selbsttest. Primäres Outcome war die Rate bewilligter Reha-Anträge, sekundäres Outcome die Antragsrate ungeachtet der Bewilligung. Ergebnisse IG und KG unterscheiden sich weder bzgl. des primären noch des sekundären Outcomes signifikant voneinander. Auch nach Kontrolle weiterer Einflussgrößen trägt die Intervention nicht zur Vorhersage der Outcomes bei. Einige Kontrollvariablen wie die Reha-Vorerfahrung erweisen sich jedoch als bedeutsame Prädiktoren für die Antragstellung. Schlussfolgerung Das bloße Angebot eines Selbsttests auf Reha-Bedarf durch den Rentenversicherungsträger wirkt sich nicht auf das Antragsgeschehen aus. Ein Brief des Rentenversicherungsträgers als alleinige Zugangsart erscheint somit nicht geeignet, um eine Erhöhung der Rate sinnvoller Reha-Anträge zu erreichen.

Background HIV self-testing (HST) is an important complement to existing testing approaches for young Black men who have sex with men (MSM) and transwomen. Methods In this formative research, we describe prevalence and perceptions of HST using qualitative in-depth interviews (n = 29) and baseline quantitative data (n = 302) from an HST intervention trial for young Black MSM and transwomen. Results In the qualitative analysis, participants preferred the privacy and flexibility of the HST but had concerns about its accuracy and being alone while testing. Quantitative results showed that 14% (44/302) had used an HST in their lifetime; of these, 64% (28/44) used it once and 23% (10/44) in the last 3 months. Conclusion To increase consistent testing, HST may provide a new avenue for at-risk individuals that value privacy and control and could benefit from social support during testing.

For those most at risk of contracting HIV, new strategies for preventing transmission and increasing testing are needed. As part of a multi-site, randomized, controlled trial, we explored attitudes and preferences among 272 HIV-negative men who have sex with men and HIV-negative transgender women using an HIV self-testing (HIVST) kit to test partners. Less than one quarter had previously self-tested with HIVST kits (21.7%) and few had partner-tested (4.8%). Most preferred gum swab (96%) over fingerprick tests (69%), but would prefer a blood test if it gave results for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (86%). Five percent reported difficulties performing the test, four percent with storage, and 26% with portability. Ninety-three percent reported likelihood of using HIVST to test partners in future, but only 3% were willing to pay the current price. Efforts to improve HIVST uptake should focus on incorporating testing for other STIs, reducing test kit size, and reducing cost.Se necesitan nuevas estrategias para prevenir la transmisión del VIH e incrementar el testeo para aquellos con mayor riesgo al contagio. Como parte de un ensayo controlado aleatorio (ECA) multicentrico, exploramos las actitudes y preferencias entre 272 hombres VIH-negativos que tienen sexo con hombres y mujeres transgenero VIH-negativos que utilizaron kits del auto-test para el VIH (HIVST) para testear a sus parejas. Menos de una cuarta parte de los participantes había utilizado HIVST para auto-testearse (21.7%), y solo pocos para testear a sus parejas (4.8%) antes del comienzo del estudio. El hisopo bucal fue preferido (96%) sobre una prueba con un pinchazo de sangre (69%) por la mayoría de los participantes pero estos preferirían la prueba de sangre si puedieran obtener resultados para otras enfermedades de transmisión sexual (ETS) (86%). Cinco por ciento reportó problemas con el uso de la prueba, 4% con el almacenamiento, y el 26% con la portabilidad. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of cinematherapy in improving student self-control. This research uses a descriptive method with a quantitative approach. The sample of this study were 21 Unindra students. The self control instrument used is a Likert scale model. The results showed the percentage of Pre Test and post test showed that there were 4 students who had self-control in the excellent category of 19%. Furthermore, there are 17 students who have a good category by 81%. Next, if seen from the t test results show that the value of the Pre Test obtained an average of self-control or a mean of 218.9. While the Post Full Self Test value was 222.9. So with that it means descriptively there is a difference in the average of self control between the Pre Test and the Post Test results. Background: Adolescent girls (AG) in sub-Saharan Africa are at elevated risk of acquiring HIV, yet few know the HIV status of their sexual partners. Interventions to promote testing among partners are urgently needed. Objectives: To explore AG’s perceived ability to safely distribute HIV self-tests to their partners, if partners would self-test, and how to minimize partner violence. Methods: We recruited HIV-negative AG ages 15-19 years with a partner of unknown HIV status or who tested negative >6 months previously. Using mixed-methods for data collection and regression and inductive thematic analysis for quantitative and qualitative analysis, respectively, we determined factors associated with the study objectives. Results: We enrolled 101 AG, median age 17.3 years, sexual debut 15-16 years, and 54.5% reported ≥2 lifetime partners. Most participants (95.0%) would offer self-tests to their partners and 95.1% reported high-to-moderate chance their part- ner would self-test. No participant attribute was associated with perceived ability to offer self-test or likelihood of partner testing. To avoid violence, AG recommended politeness, indirect approach, voluntariness, and highlighting advantages of self-testing. Conclusions: AG believe they can safely distribute self-tests to their partners, and most partners would self-test, expanding utility of HIV self-tests to include partners of AG. Background: The Public Health Agency of Canada estimates that about 87% of persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Canada have been diagnosed, which is well below the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS target to have 95% of HIV-positive persons diagnosed. Research has shown that HIV self-testing may help increase such diagnoses, especially among the populations who are most affected by HIV. The objective of the study was to determine the uptake and diagnosis outcomes associated with free HIV self-testing. Methods: We developed the first online mailout free HIV self-testing program in Canada and implemented it in Ottawa. This project ran through the website, www.GetaKit.ca. We intended to recruit 150–400 participants over a 6–12-month period, estimating that this number would yield between 0–1 positive test results (expected positivity rate of 0.08%). Results: Between July 20, 2020 and April 1, 2021, 1,268 people accessed the GetaKit website and verified their eligibility. In total, 600 persons were eligible and 405 ordered an HIV kit. Of those who ordered a kit, 399 completed a baseline survey. Overall, 71% of these participants were members of HIV priority groups. For test results, 228 persons reported test results, with one being positive, for a positivity rate of 0.24% overall and 0.44% of reported results. These rates exceed that normally observed in Ottawa. Conclusion: Self-testing of HIV can be effectively delivered through a website. Such an intervention will also be used by persons with undiagnosed infections and appears to do so at a rate higher than that observed by other means of testing. Self-testing of HIV may therefore help Canada achieve the United Nations 95-95-95 targets.

The prevalence of HIV across South Africa places a strain on testing facilities. The use of HIV self-testing (HIVST) devices has been identified as a strategy to ease the burden on these facilities. The usability and performance of the Asante HIV−1/2 Oral Self-Test (Asante) (Sedia Biosciences, Portland OR, USA) device by novice users was assessed and reported on, to inform for the implementation of such devices in South Africa and elsewhere. Convenience sampling was used. Participants used the Asante HIVST device and recorded their interpretation of their results. Participants’ interpretations were compared with those of trained professionals and, thereafter, verified using the rapid diagnostic testing algorithm. Out of the eligible participants, 410 of the 524 (78.2%) were between the ages of 18–35. The usability assessment indicates that 100% of participants used the HIVST device’s information leaflet. However, 19/524 (3.6%) of participants who yielded an invalid result due to critical errors were excluded from the primary efficacy analysis. The average usability score was 98.1%. The sensitivity and specificity results were, 94.7% and 99.8%, respectively. This study shows that the Asante HIV self-test, and similar devices, can be valuable in providing convenient HIV self-testing and immediately available results. To accommodate a greater number of inexperienced users, the instructions may need to be revised.

Background: Studies suggest that offering HIV self-testing (HIVST) increases short-term HIV testing rates, but few have looked at long-term outcomes.Methods: We conducted a randomized controlled trial (RIDIE 55847d64a454f) on the impact of offering free oral HIVST to 305 truck drivers recruited from two clinics in Kenya. We previously reported that those offered HIVST were more likely to accept testing. Here we report on the 6-month follow-up during which intervention participants could pick-up HIVST kits from eight clinics.Results: There was no difference in HIV testing during 6-month follow-up between participants in the intervention and the standard of care (SOC) arms (OR = 1.0, p = 0.877). The most common reasons given for not testing were lack of time (69.6%), low risk (27.2%), fear of knowing HIV status (20.8%), and had tested recently (8.0%). The null association was not modified by having tested at baseline (interaction p = 0.613), baseline risk behaviors (number of partners in past 6 months, interaction p = 0.881, had transactional sex in past 6 months, interaction p = 0.599), nor having spent at least half of the past 30 nights away from home for work (interaction p = 0.304). Most participants indicated a preference for the characteristics associated with the SOC [preference for blood-based tests (69.4%), provider-administered testing (74.6%) testing in a clinic (70.1%)]. However, those in the intervention arm were more likely to prefer an oral swab test than those in the SOC (36.6 vs. 24.6%, p = 0.029).Conclusions: Offering HIVST kits to truck drivers through a clinic network had little impact on testing rates over the 6-month follow-up when participants had to return to the clinic to access HIVST. Clinic-based distribution of HIVST kits may not address some major barriers to testing, such as lack of time to go to a clinic, fear of knowing one’s status and low risk perception. Preferred HIV testing attributes were consistent with the SOC for most participants, but oral swab preference was higher among those in the intervention arm, who had seen the oral HIVST and had the opportunity to try it. This suggests that preferences may change with exposure to different testing modalities.

HIV/syphilis self- and partner-testing may be especially appropriate for transgender women, since they shoulder a disproportionate burden of HIV, other STIs (e.g., syphilis), and report high levels of medical mistrust. The SMARTest study enrolled N = 50 sexual and gender minority individuals. The present analysis aims to understand the experiences (via in-depth interviews) of a subset of n = 11 transgender women who used INSTI Multiplex®, a combination HIV/syphilis rapid self-test, on themselves and potential sex partners. Participants reported that many partners were willing to test, and reported no testing-related violence. Most participants completed tests successfully, though gaining comfort with blood collection took time. There were no HIV-positive tests in this study; one participant and two partners reported a positive syphilis screening. All sought care. Our sample was small and results should be interpreted with caution, but indicate potential future directions for conducting research on self- and partner-testing among transgender women.

Background:Self-management can be considered a way of dealing with oneself and relates to actions undertaken to create order, discipline, and control. The concept is closely linked to concepts of self-efficacy and self-regulation but can be distinguished from these. The Self-Management Self-Test (SMST) is a 5-item assessment scale designed to measure self-management competence in individuals with or without a psychiatric disorder (as screened using PHQ). The aim of this study was to validate the SMST in terms of convergent validity, the ability to differentiate, criterion validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability.Methods:Eighty-seven adults hospitalized for treatment of major depression (clinical sample) and 595 individuals from the general population (population sample) filled out the SMST and 5 other stress-related psychometric instruments measuring similar constructs. All instruments were repeated 4 to 6 weeks later. Convergent validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability were tested based on data from the population sample. Convergent validity was determined by correlations with other stress-related psychometric instruments. Correlations in the range of r = –0.4 to –0.6 were expected. To test for criterion validity, the clinical sample was matched with a subsample from the population sample, consisting only of individuals without a psychiatric disorder as screened using PHQ (nonclinical subsample, n = 87). The ability to differentiate was based on receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.Results:Correlations between the SMST and the other stress-related tests were significant and in the expected direction and predominantly within the expected range (Pearson r = –0.40 to –0.64). The correlation with the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory–20, measuring fatigue, and with the dimensional scale for depression in the PHQ was higher than expected and referred to very similar items. Thus, convergent validity mainly lay within the expected range. Internal consistency was high (Cronbach α = 0.80), and test-retest reliability was fairly low ( r = 0.71). The SMST showed a significant difference, t(157) = 7.97, P < .001, between the clinical sample (M = 9.36, SD = 3.39) and the nonclinical subsample (M = 12.94, SD = 2.47) with a large effect size ( d = 1.3). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was excellent (AUC = 0.81, SE = 0.034, P < .001), suggesting that the SMST can distinguish between the clinical and nonclinical samples.Conclusions:The SMST can be considered an effective self-rating test to assess self-management competence in individuals from the general population as well as in people with major depression. It may also be useful to detect treatment outcomes in people with major depression. The high internal consistency indicates that all 5 items are important for the test as a whole. The low test-retest reliability suggests sensitivity to change. The SMST is likely to differentiate particularly well at low levels of self-management competence, suggesting it may be a useful tool in studies investigating people with depression or other psychiatric disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder. Furthermore, the SMST could be useful in assessing the effect of treatment interventions over time and evaluating patient-reported outcomes.

Purpose This study investigated user characteristics, help-seeking behavior, and follow-up actions of people who failed an app-based digits-in-noise hearing screening test, considering their stage of change. Method Test and user characteristics of 3,092 listeners who failed the test were retrospectively analyzed. A posttest survey determining follow-up (verb) actions was sent to listeners who failed the test ( n = 1,007), of which 59 responded. Results The majority of listeners were in the precontemplation stage (75.5%). Age and stage of change were significant ( p < .05) predictors of the digits-in-noise speech recognition threshold (DIN SRT). Listeners in the precontemplation stage were significantly younger than in other stages ( p < .05). Posttest survey response rate was low (5.9%). Of those, most (82.4%) did not think they had a hearing loss. Only 13.6% followed up with an audiologist. Conclusion Older people presented with poorer DIN SRTs and were typically in a more advanced stage of change. The majority of those who did not follow up after failing the screening test did not believe they had a hearing loss. A combination of factors, including poor DIN SRT, older age, and a more advanced stage of change inclined participants to follow up with audiological care.

Background There is increasing demand for HIV self-tests, and nurses play an important role in counselling and assisting in the testing process. Traditional lecture-based nursing education has not typically focused on self-testing procedures, and there is little understanding of clients' experiences of self-testing. Objectives To understand the experiential learning (EL) of student nurses during the process of self-testing for HIV. Design This study used a qualitative design. Settings A college in northern Taiwan. Participants We recruited a purposive sample of 30 nursing students. Methods The OraQuick self-test was used as the self-testing tool in this study. After participants used the OraQuick self-test, they underwent a semi-structured interview during the post-test counselling period. All interview data were subjected to line-by-line content analysis. Results We extracted nine themes of nursing students' experiences during experiential learning of HIV self-test. In the pre-test stage, they recalled possible risk behaviors for HIV infection, decided to complete the self-test alone or asked for significant others to accompany them, and endured emotional fluctuations immediately prior to the test. When waiting for the test results, they felt isolated from the outside world. Some participants also began questioning the accuracy and safety of the test, and either viewed the results immediately or later on. In the post-test stage, some participants reported being uncertain about the results. Participants reported a greater understanding of the personal impact of testing and revealed their needs for support. Some identified a sense of loss and linked this to the rapid and direct delivery of test results. Conclusions Our results can be used to guide HIV-related education courses and prevention programs. Experiential learning has the potential to improve HIV pre and post-test counselling, as nurses develop both clinical knowledge and personal insight of the testing process.

Background Ending AIDS by 2030 is a global target, to which India is a signatory. HIV-self-test (HIVST) coupled with counselling and AIDS-care, including antiretroviral therapy, has the potential to achieve this. However, national programs are at varying stages of acceptance of HIVST, as discussions around its introduction spark controversy and debates. HIV-self-test, as yet, is not part of the AIDS control program in India. Against this backdrop, we explored acceptability of an HIV oral self-test (HIVOST) among truckers and young men and women. Methods A qualitative investigation with 41 in-depth-interviews and 15 group discussions were conducted in the district of Pune, in the western state of Maharashtra, India. These interactions were built around a prototype HIVOST kit, helped in taking the discussions forward. The software N-vivo (version 11.0) was used to manage the volumes of data generated through the aforementioned process. The study was conducted during June through December, 2019. Results While the truckers belonged to the age bracket 21–67 year, the youths were in the age group 18–24 year. ‘Ease of doing HIVOST’ and ‘fear of needle pricks’ were the reasons behind acceptance around HIVOST by both the study groups. Truckers felt that HIVOST would encourage one to know one’s HIV status and seek help as appropriate. Accuracy of HIVOST result and disposal of the kits following use were concerns of a few. Most of the participants preferred saliva over blood as the specimen of choice. Instructions in local language reportedly would enable test-use by self. The truck drivers preferred undertaking HIVOST at the truckers-friendly ‘Khushi clinics’ or in the vehicle, while youths preferred the privacy of home. Some of the young men mis-perceived the utility of HIVOST by referring to doing a test on a partner immediately prior to sexual encounter. On the other hand, a few truckers had wrong information on HIV cure. Conclusions Overall, the study communities expressed their acceptance towards HIV-self-test. The National AIDS Control Program, India would benefit by drawing upon the findings of the current investigation. Existing myths and misconceptions around HIV test and treatment require program attention.

Background Self testing for HIV is a targeted intervention with the potential to increase the access, uptake and frequency of HIV testing and more effectively reach the undiagnosed, especially in priority populations. The objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate the INSTI HIV self-test performance compared with laboratory reference testing, (2) document if intended users can perform the steps to use the HIV self-test device, and (3) document if intended users can successfully interpret contrived positive, negative, and invalid results. Study was intended to be submitted to Health Canada for review for regulatory approval purposes. Methods The study used a cross-sectional design and recruited consenting adults who were representative of intended users of HIV self-testing from four community sites across Ontario, Québec, and Manitoba between August 2019 and March 2020. The results of the observed HIV self-test were compared with results of the Abbott Architect HIV Ag/Ab Combo test. Usability outcomes for critical (e.g., lancing finger, blood droplet into bottle, shaking bottle four times) and noncritical self-test procedure steps were also determined. Results Overall, 77% (n = 522) of participants were between 18 and 45 years of age, 61% (n = 410) were male, 71% (n = 480) had some college or more education, and 45% (n = 307) were employed; identity for race and ethnicity: Caucasian (44%; n = 296), African, Caribbean or Black (17%; n = 113), Indigenous [First Nations, Métis or Inuit] (14%; n = 95), Asian (16%; n = 106), Latin American (7%; n = 46). Primary performance analysis on 678 completed HIV self-tests revealed a positive percent agreement of 100% (5/5, 95% CI: 43.6–97.0%) and a negative percent agreement of 99.5% (614/617, 95% CI: 98.6–99.8%) with the comparator method. The overall percent agreement of results interpretation between participant and observer was 93.5% (n = 633). For the 708 participants who took part in the usability study, the average success rate for steps determined to be “critical” for successful completion of the test was 92.4%. 97% (n = 670) of participants found the instructions easy to follow, and 95% (n = 655) of participants indicated that they would use the test again. Of the 404 participants who interpreted the strong positive, weak positive, negative, and invalid contrived results, successful interpretation ranged from 90.6% (for weak positive, n = 366) to 99.3% (for negative, n = 401). Conclusions The addition of a regulatory-approved self-test into the Canadian HIV testing landscape could significantly increase HIV testing rates. Having a blood-based HIV self-test approved in Canada can offer an accurate, acceptable, and simple alternative to facility-based HIV testing, particularly when impacted by Coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

BackgroundCountries around the world seek innovative ways of closing their remaining gaps towards the target of 95% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) knowing their status by 2030. Offering kits allowing HIV self-testing (HIVST) in private might help close these gaps.MethodsWe analysed the cost, use and linkage to onward care of 11 HIVST kit distribution models alongside the Self-Testing AfRica Initiative’s distribution of 2.2 million HIVST kits in South Africa in 2018/2019. Outcomes were based on telephonic surveys of 4% of recipients; costs on a combination of micro-costing, time-and-motion and expenditure analysis. Costs were calculated from the provider perspective in 2019 US$, as incremental costs in integrated and full costs in standalone models.ResultsHIV positivity among kit recipients was 4%–23%, with most models achieving 5%–6%. Linkage to confirmatory testing and antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation for those screening positive was 19%–78% and 2%–72% across models. Average costs per HIVST kit distributed varied between $4.87 (sex worker model) and $18.07 (mobile integration model), with differences largely driven by kit volumes. HIVST kit costs (at $2.88 per kit) and personnel costs were the largest cost items throughout. Average costs per outcome increased along the care cascade, with the sex worker network model being the most cost-effective model across metrics used (cost per kit distributed/recipient screening positive/confirmed positive/initiating ART). Cost per person confirmed positive for HIVST was higher than standard HIV testing.ConclusionHIV self-test distribution models in South Africa varied widely along four characteristics: distribution volume, HIV positivity, linkage to care and cost. Volume was highest in models that targeted public spaces with high footfall (flexible community, fixed point and transport hub distribution), followed by workplace models. Transport hub, workplace and sex worker models distributed kits in the least costly way. Distribution via index cases at facility as well as sex worker network distribution identified the highest number of PLHIV at lowest cost.

International audience; Testing digital integrated circuits is generally done using Design-for-Testability (DfT) solutions. Such solutions, however, introduce non-negligible area and timing overheads that can be overcome by adopting functional solutions. In particular, functional test of integrated circuits plays a key role when guaranteeing the device's safety is required during the operative lifetime (in-field test), as required by standards like ISO26262. This can be achieved via the execution of a Self-Test Library (STL) by the device under test (DUT). Nevertheless, developing such test programs requires a significant manual effort, and can be non-trivial when dealing with complex modules. This paper moves the first step in defining a generic and systematic methodology to improve transition delay faults' observability of existing STLs. To do so, we analyze previously devised STLs in order to highlight specific points within test programs to be improved, leading to an increase in the final fault coverage.

Students can use personal mobile devices to access Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in addition to desktop computers. However, user interfaces are often only scaled to smaller screen sizes and interaction patterns of a desktop learning experience do not always fit well with the characteristics of mobile devices. Adequate solutions for answering self-test questions on mobile devices often do not exist. In this paper, we explore the currently shown interaction patterns of MOOC learners when answering self-tests to make an informed decision about the requirements for the appropriate solution on mobile devices. The students' context was categorized into Desktop Web, Mobile Web, and Mobile Application. In an observational case study, the interaction events of two courses were analyzed regarding these device groups. Desktop Web is the most used environment. No practical differences between device groups were identified for subsequent attempts. Learners stick to a single device group and often only participate once in a self-test. Also, learners using mobile applications spend more time submitting self-tests.

Background Few studies have explored alternative strategies for reaching men with HIV self-testing services. In this study, we assessed the factors associated with men’s comfort to distribute or receive HIV self-test kits from close male friends among men who socialize in networks locally referred to as "camps" in Tanzania. Methods Data are from a cluster-randomized controlled trial conducted in June 2019 in 18 social networks or “camps” in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Participants were 18-year-old or older male camp members who were HIV-negative at the time of enrolment. Robust Poisson regression was implemented through the generalized random effect model with the log link to assess the factors associated with being comfortable to receive and/or give out HIV self-test kits to close male members within one’s social network. Results Of 505 participants, 67.9% (n = 342) reported that they would be comfortable giving HIV self-test kits to close male friends while 68.2% (n = 344) were comfortable receiving HIV self-test kits from their close male friends. Ever having heard about HIV self-testing (Adjusted Prevalence Rate (Adj. PR): 1.6; 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.3, 1.9), willingness to self-test for HIV in front of a sexual partner (Adj. PR: 3.0; 95%CI: 1.5, 6.1) and exposure to peer-led HIV self-testing education and promotion (Adj. PR: 1.4; 95%CI: 1.2, 1.7) were significantly associated with being comfortable to receive and/or give out HIV self-test kits to close male members within one’s social network. Conclusions Prior awareness of HIV self-testing, willingness to self-test before one’s sexual partner and exposure to peer-led HIV self-testing education and promotion were significantly associated with being comfortable to give or receive HIV self-test kits from close male friends in this population. These findings suggest that distribution of HIV self-test kits through close male friends could improve the proportion of men reached with HIV self-testing services and improve HIV testing rates in this population where uptake remains low.

Background HIV self-testing (HIVST) kits are common in key sexually active populations. Direct secondary distribution of HIVST kits (DSDHK) is effective in improving the uptake of HIVST. However, there are concerns about the various limitations of DSDHK, including limited geographic reach, payment problems, and need for face-to-face interactions. Objective In this study, we aim to evaluate the feasibility and characteristics of indirect secondary distribution of HIVST kits (ISDHK) via WeChat (distributing HIVST application links and follow-up HIVST kits to partners) among men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods From October 2017 to September 2019, an HIVST recruitment advertisement was disseminated on the WeChat social media platform to invite MSM to apply for the HIVST kits (referred to as index participants [IPs]). All MSM participants were encouraged to distribute the HIVST application link to their friends and sexual partners (referred to as alters) through their social networks. All the alters were further encouraged to continue distributing the HIVST application link. All participants paid a deposit (US $7), which was refundable upon completion of the questionnaire, and uploaded the test results via a web-based survey system. Results A total of 2263 MSM met the criteria and successfully applied for HIVST. Of these, 1816 participants returned their HIVST results, including 1422 (88.3%) IPs and 394 (21.7%) alters. More alters had condomless anal intercourse, a higher proportion of them had never previously tested for HIV, and they showed a greater willingness to distribute HIVST kits to their sexual partners (P=.002) than the IPs. After controlling for age, education, and income, the alters had a greater proportion of MSM who had never tested for HIV before (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.29, 95% CI 1.00-1.68), were more willing to distribute the HIVST application link (aOR 1.71, 95% CI 1.21-2.40), had a lower number of sexual partners (aOR 0.71, 95% CI 0.57-0.90), and were less likely to search for sexual partners on the web (aOR 0.78, 95% CI 0.60-1.02) than IPs. In comparison, the rates of reactive HIVST results, conducting HIV confirmatory tests, HIV seropositivity, and initiation of HIV antiretroviral therapy were similar for IPs and alters. Conclusions The ISDHK model of distributing HIVST application links among the MSM population via social media is feasible. The ISDHK model should be used to supplement the DSDHK model to enable a greater proportion of the MSM population to know their HIV infection status.

Background Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for influenza used by individuals at home could potentially expand access to testing and reduce the impact of influenza on health systems. Improving access to testing could lead to earlier diagnosis following symptom onset, allowing more rapid interventions for those who test positive, including behavioral changes to minimize spread. However, the accuracy of RDTs for influenza has not been determined in self-testing populations. Objective This study aims to assess the accuracy of an influenza RDT conducted at home by lay users with acute respiratory illness compared with that of a self-collected sample by the same individual mailed to a laboratory for reference testing. Methods We conducted a comparative accuracy study of an at-home influenza RDT (Ellume) in a convenience sample of individuals experiencing acute respiratory illness symptoms. Participants were enrolled in February and March 2020 from the Greater Seattle region in Washington, United States. Participants were mailed the influenza RDT and reference sample collection materials, which they completed and returned for quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction influenza testing in a central laboratory. We explored the impact of age, influenza type, duration, and severity of symptoms on RDT accuracy and on cycle threshold for influenza virus and ribonuclease P, a marker of human DNA. Results A total of 605 participants completed all study steps and were included in our analysis, of whom 87 (14.4%) tested positive for influenza by quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (70/87, 80% for influenza A and 17/87, 20% for influenza B). The overall sensitivity and specificity of the RDT compared with the reference test were 61% (95% CI 50%-71%) and 95% (95% CI 93%-97%), respectively. Among individuals with symptom onset ≤72 hours, sensitivity was 63% (95% CI 48%-76%) and specificity was 94% (95% CI 91%-97%), whereas, for those with duration >72 hours, sensitivity and specificity were 58% (95% CI 41%-74%) and 96% (95% CI 93%-98%), respectively. Viral load on reference swabs was negatively correlated with symptom onset, and quantities of the endogenous marker gene ribonuclease P did not differ among reference standard positive and negative groups, age groups, or influenza subtypes. The RDT did not have higher sensitivity or specificity among those who reported more severe illnesses. Conclusions The sensitivity and specificity of the self-test were comparable with those of influenza RDTs used in clinical settings. False-negative self-test results were more common when the test was used after 72 hours of symptom onset but were not related to inadequate swab collection or severity of illness. Therefore, the deployment of home tests may provide a valuable tool to support the management of influenza and other respiratory infections.

Key to curtailing the COVID-19 pandemic are wide-scale testing strategies1,2. An ideal test is one that would not rely on transporting, distributing, and collecting physical specimens. Given the olfactory impairment associated with COVID-193-7, we developed a novel measure of olfactory perception that relies on smelling household odorants and rating them online. We tested the performance of this real-time tool in 12,020 participants from 134 countries who provided 171,500 perceptual ratings of 60 different household odorants. We observed that olfactory ratings were indicative of COVID-19 status in a country, significantly correlating with national infection rates over time. More importantly, we observed remarkable indicative power at the individual level (90% sensitivity and 80% specificity). Critically, olfactory testing remained highly effective in participants with COVID-19 but without symptoms, and in participants with symptoms but without COVID-19. In this, the current odorant-based olfactory test stands apart from symptom-checkers (including olfactory symptom-checkers)3, and even from antigen tests8, to potentially provide a first line of screening that can help halt disease progression at the population level.

HIV self-testing (HIVST) has been introduced to supplement existing HIV testing methods to increase the number of people knowing their HIV status. Various HIVST kits have been developed; however, in many countries, their entry into the market is contingent on either being listed as World Health Organization (WHO) prequalified diagnostics/products or being approved by that country’s health device regulator or both. In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the usability, sensitivity and specificity of HIVSTs, as directed by the WHO prequalification literature. A boxed, sealed HIVST kit was provided to enrolled lay users with no further instruction, who then performed the test under observation. For each HIVST, a product-specific semi-structured checklist was used to calculate a usability index, while the sensitivity and specificity of each HIVST were calculated by comparing the HIVST results to the ‘gold standard’ – fourth-generation ELISA laboratory blood test. The average usability index was 97.1% (95.9–97.8%), while the average sensitivity and specificity were 98.2% (96.8–99.3%) and 99.8% (99.4–100.0%), respectively. We also diagnosed 507 (15.1%) HIV-positive participants from the general population. The average usability index, sensitivity and specificity were all comparatively high, and these results corroborate previous usability and performance studies from other regions. These results suggest HIVSTs are appropriate for the South African market and can assist manufacturers with readying their devices for final WHO prequalification evaluation. Significance: This study has followed the WHO Technical Specification Series for the prequalification of HIV self-test devices, so the usability, sensitivity and specificity results may be used to inform the WHO prequalification process. The average usability index (97.1%), sensitivity (98.2%) and specificity (99.8%) were all very high, and these results support previous usability and performance studies from other regions, which suggest HIV self-tests are appropriate for WHO prequalification, and subsequently, the South African market. This study also diagnosed 507 (15.1%) HIV-positive participants from the general population – slightly higher than the national prevalence of 13.1%.

In order to detect gait by the elderly themselves at home and apply gait rules on pension industry, we designed experiments and used inertia motion capture device, Perception Neuron Pro, to capture motion data. In this paper, it tested the subject by Functional Ambulation Performance criterion, CALC data, and BVH were used data to increase the data extraction speed. Thirdly, we designed the process of extracting gait parameters, and it investigated the law of lower limb movement and the correlation between step length and lower limb movement. In this way, the elderly can know their physical condition and changes exactly. Accordingly, the elderly can take appropriate countermeasures timely.

The current study aimed to investigate the feasibility of the digit triplet test (DTT) as a self-test in normal-hearing children at school-entry age (5–6 years) compared to an administrator-controlled test. Thirty-seven first grade elementary school children took part in this study. Next to a pure-tone screening, the test battery consisted of a DTT speech-in-noise screening (self-test and administrator-controlled assessment), and cognitive tests related to auditory/working memory and attention skills. The reference-SRT ± 2SD, obtained with the administrator-controlled DTT, was −9.8 ± 1.6 dB SNR, and could be estimated with a precision of 0.7 dB. The test duration for one ear was about 4.5 min. Self-tests resulted in higher (poorer) SRTs. Only a small proportion of children performed stably across repeated self-test administrations. With about 6 min for one ear, the test duration was rather long. The influence of auditory/working memory and attentional abilities appeared to be limited. Our data suggest that a self-administered DTT is not suitable for a large proportion of children at school-entry.

Background: Human Immunodeficiency Virus self-test (HIVST) refers to a process where a person collects his or her own specimen (blood or oral), performs a test and interprets the results. The interpretation of results can either be done in private or through support of a trusted partner. Self-test should be seen as screening and confirmatory test should be sort. Study Objective To determine facilitating factors for HIVST acceptability and uptake among MSM community. Methods: The researcher employed a cross-sectional exploratory study design, targeting men who have sex with men (MSM) in Nairobi. Adult men (aged 18-60 years) that reported to be actively engaging in anal or oral sex with men were eligible for the study. The researcher used purposive sampling to identify the sites where data was collected, snowballing technique was then employed to reach the respondents. Data was collected between July 2018-June 2019. A total of 391 MSM respondent were recruited to fill the self-administered questionnaires, 369 MSM completed the questionnaires (response rate = 94%). Results: There was a significant association between self-test and frequency of testing for HIV/AIDS at P-Value of 0.011. The respondents who had a positive result from the previous test were 16% and 80% of the respondents would seek confirmatory test, if tested HIV positive through HIVST. There was also a significant association between respondents who had never tested using self-test kits and the need for a testing “buddy” with a P- Value of 0.014. Fifty nine percent of the respondents would prefer blood sample test kits. High cost of the self-test kits and inadequate knowledge on the use of HIV self-test kits were the main hindrances to HIVST uptake. Conclusions: A significant number of MSM community in Kenya are willing to use HIVST and are likely to seek for care within 30 days and this is a good indicator of linkage. Blood sample kits are more preferred. Key facilitating factors for HIVST uptake include; awareness creation on HIVST, training on usage of kits, emphasis on testing ‘buddy” for first time testers and reduction on cost of the kits.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has begun implementing HIV self-testing to boost the first “95” of the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets by 2025. This study aims to assess the performance and usability of the Exacto Test HIV (Biosynex, Strasbourg, France) self-test in the lab and in the field. The Exacto Test HIV self-test demonstrated high virological performance (sensitivity, 99.6%; specificity, 100%) in the lab and in the field in the hand of untrained users (sensitivity, 100%; specificity, 98.9%). Taken together, the excellent performance and usability characteristics of the Exacto Test HIV (Biosynex) self-test make the kit a viable option for HIV self-testing in the DRC.

Any sensor or system employed to measure a physical property will by default impart some alteration to the original signal due to its inherent non-perfect response. Knowing the relationship between the input and the output of such a sensor or system is therefore essential for the correct definition of the original signal measured. What is presented herein is an experimental investigation of determining a MEMS accelerometer’s dynamic characteristics by repurposing the self test pin made available by the manufacturer for simple binary functionality test. The Analog Devices ADXL325 was used for all the experiments described in this document.

Introduction: Self-Testing for HIV (“HIVST”) is an emerging targeted intervention with the potential to increase the access, uptake and frequency of HIV testing and more effectively reach the undiagnosed especially in priority populations. The study objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate the INSTI HIV-Self-Test (HIV-ST) performance compared with laboratory reference testing, (2) document if intended users can perform the steps to use the HIV-ST device, and (3) document if intended users can successfully interpret contrived positive, negative, and invalid results. Study was intended to be submitted to Health Canada for review for license purposes.Methods: The study used a cross-sectional design and recruited consenting adults from four community sites across Ontario, Québec, and Manitoba between August 2019 and March 2020. The results of the observed HIV-ST were compared with results of the Abbott Architect HIV Ag/Ab Combo test. Results: Primary efficacy analysis on 678 completed HIV-ST revealed a positive percent agreement of 100% and a negative percent agreement of 99.5% with the comparator method. The overall percent agreement of results interpretation between participant and observer was 93.5%. Of the 708 participants who took part in the usability study, 92.4% of participants successfully performed the steps determined to be “critical” for successful completion of the test, 96.7% of participants found the instructions easy to follow, and 95% of participants indicated that they would use the test again. Of the 404 participants who interpreted the strong positive, weak positive, negative and invalid contrived results, successful interpretation ranged from 90.6% (for weak positive) to 99.3% (for negative).Conclusions: The addition of this very first self-test into the Canadian HIV testing landscape could significantly increase HIV testing rates. An approved blood-based HIV self-test in Canada can offer an accurate, acceptable and simple alternative to facility-based HIV testing, particularly when impacted by Coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

Background: Secondary distribution of HIV self-testing kits (HIVST) to pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) clinics to give to their male partners is a promising strategy to increase testing coverage among men, but its costs are unknown. Methods: We conducted micro-costing of a trial evaluating secondary distribution of HIVST on pregnant women living with HIV (PWLHIV) in an ANC in Kampala, Uganda. Costs (2019 USD) were collected from program budgets, expenditure records, time and motion observations, and staff interviews and estimated for three scenarios: as-studied, reflecting full costs of the research intervention, Ministry of Health (MOH) implementation, reflecting the research intervention if implemented by the MOH, and MOH roll-out, the current strategy being used to roll out HIVST distribution. Results: In the as-studied scenario, cost of HIVST provision was $13.96/PWLHIV reached, and $11.89 and $10.55 per HIV-positive and HIV-negative male partner, respectively, who linked to a clinic for facility-based testing. In the MOH implementation scenario, costs were $9.45/PWLHIV, and $7.87 and $6.99, respectively, per HIV-positive and HIV-negative male partner linking to the clinic. In the MOH roll-out scenario, the cost of HIVST provision to pregnant women regardless of HIV status was $3.70/woman, and $6.65/HIV-positive male partner. Conclusion: Secondary distribution of HIVST from pregnant women can be implemented at reasonable cost to increase testing among men in Uganda and similar settings in Africa.

Background HIV self-tests increase HIV status awareness by providing convenience and privacy, although cost and access may limit use. Since 2015, the New York City (NYC) Health Department has conducted 5 waves of an online Home Test Giveaway. Methods We recruited adult cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) individuals who had sex with men, who were living in NYC, not previously HIV diagnosed, and using paid digital advertisements (4-8 weeks per wave). Eligible respondents were e-mailed a code to redeem on the manufacturer's website for a free HIV self-test and an online follow-up survey ~2 months later. For key process and outcome measures, we present means across 5 waves. Results Across the 5 waves of Home Test Giveaway, there were 28,921 responses to the eligibility questionnaire: 17,383 were eligible, 12,182 redeemed a code for a free HIV self-test, and 7935 responded to the follow-up survey (46% of eligible responses). Among eligible responses, approximately half were Latino/a (mean, 32%) or non-Latino/a, black (mean, 17%). Mean report of never testing before was 16%. Among 5903 follow-up survey responses who reported test use, 32 reported reactive results with no known previous diagnosis (0.54%), of whom 78% reported receiving confirmatory testing. Report of likelihood of recommending the Home Test Giveaway to friends was high (mean, 96%). Conclusions We recruited diverse NYC MSM and TGNC and distributed a large number of HIV self-tests to them. Among respondents who reported newly reactive tests, the majority reported confirmatory testing. This seems to be one acceptable way to reach MSM and TGNC for HIV testing, including those who have never tested before.

Learners in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are reiterating over the provided course material especially self-tests - to consolidate their knowledge. This is a manual and often cumbersome process as MOOC platforms do not provide personalized revision opportunities. This paper introduces the design and concept of a flashcard-like recap tool based on spaced repetition learning techniques. The recap material is derived from existing self-test questions. The usage rates of the recap tool were observed in three courses and peaked before graded assignments, primarily before the final exam. When choosing the question quantity, learners preferred either the smallest option or wanted to revise all of the available questions, whereas the average number of questions per recap session increases over time. Recap tool users who completed a recap session showed smaller error rates than those who stopped a recap session abruptly, while learners who skipped questions performed worst. Course participants who used the recap tool throughout the course achieved on average more of the available points. Statistically highly significant differences were detected for all observed courses. An additional survey (N=79) gathered qualitative feedback and impressions from the learning community.

Editor’s note: Self-testing hardware has a long tradition as a complement to manufacturing testing based on test stimuli and response analysis. Today, it is a mature field and many complex SoCs have self-testing structures built-in (BIST). For self-aware SoCs this is a key technology, allowing the system to distinguish between correct and erroneous behavior. Recently, the development of nanotechnology (NTC) has been considered as a promising revolution in designing and fabricating biomedical systems with applications for point-of-care tests (POCTs), smartphone technology, and wearable electronics for self-testing. Although many new devices have been introduced, there is still a need for rapid and accurate self-test kits. We summarize the recent progress in NTC toward POCT devices for self-diagnosis of disease. This review focuses on the potential application of self-test devices and the possible technologies that would support their development, differentiating this review from the plethora of reviews on progress in POCT. Furthermore, we review how NTC has been implemented for designing and deploying devices capable of NTC-related self-sampling and self-diagnosis with naked-eye readable systems as user-friendly, at-home tests. Future perspectives on integrated and automated micro-/nano-sampling detection systems compatible with mobile/hand-held and wearable devices for improved management of communicable and non-communicable diseases are discussed.
