A single-layer gradiometer with parallel pickup-inductances integrated with superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) sensors galvanically coupled to the antenna is developed. The sensors are prepared on 1 mm-thick c-axis oriented bicrystalline SrTiO3 substrates. The gradiometer is operated at 77 K without any shielding. The values of the gradiometer's specific resistance and critical current density are in good agreement with existing experimental data.

The steadily growing electric vehicle market is a driving force in low-cost, high-energy-density lithium-ion battery development. To meet this demand, LiNi 0.975 Al 0.025 O 2 (LNA), a high-energy-density and cobalt-free cathode material, has been developed using a low-cost and efficient co-precipitation and lithiation process. This article explores how further processing (i.e., washing residual lithium from the secondary particle surface and applying a secondary heat treatment at 650 °C) changes the chemical environment of the surface and the electrochemical performance of the LNA cathode material. After washing, a nonconductive nickel oxide (NiO) phase is formed on the surface, decreasing the initial capacity in electrochemical tests, and suppressing high-voltage (H2) to (H3) phase transition results in enhanced cycle properties. Furthermore, the secondary heat treatment re-lithiates surface NiO back to LNAand increases the initial capacity with enhanced cycle properties. Electrochemical tests are performed with the cells without tap charge to suppress the H2 to H3 phase transition. Results reveal that avoiding charging cells at a high voltage for a long time dramatically improves LNA's cycle life. In addition, the gas analysis tests performed during charge and discharge to reveal how the amount of residual lithium compounds on the surface affects gas formation are studied., (© 2023 The Authors. Dendrons are an important class of macromolecules that can be used for a broad range of applications. Recent studies have indicated that mixtures of oligoglycerol detergent (OGD) regioisomers are superior to individual regioisomers for protein extraction. The origin of this phenomenon remains puzzling. Here we discuss the synthesis and characterization of dendritic oligoglycerol regioisomer mixtures and their implementation into detergents. We provide experimental benchmarks to support quality control after synthesis and investigate the unusual utility of OGD regioisomer mixtures for extracting large protein quantities from biological membranes. An approach is presented for the structure determination of clathrates using NMR spectroscopy of enclathrated xenon to select from a set of predicted crystal structures. Crystal structure prediction methods have been used to generate an ensemble of putative structures of o- and m-fluorophenol, whose previously unknown clathrate structures have been studied by 129 Xe NMR spectroscopy. The high sensitivity of the 129 Xe chemical shift tensor to the chemical environment and shape of the crystalline cavity makes it ideal as a probe for porous materials. The experimental powder NMR spectra can be used to directly confirm or reject hypothetical crystal structures generated by computational prediction, whose chemical shift tensors have been simulated using density functional theory. For each fluorophenol isomer one predicted crystal structure was found, whose measured and computed chemical shift tensors agree within experimental and computational error margins and these are thus proposed as the true fluorophenol xenon clathrate structures., (© 2017 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Preparing data for medical research can be challenging, detail oriented, and time consuming. Transcription errors, missing or nonsensical data, and records not applicable to the study population may hamper progress and, if unaddressed, can lead to erroneous conclusions. In addition, study data may be housed in multiple disparate databases and complex formats. Merging methods may be incomplete to obtain temporally synchronized data elements. We created a comprehensive database to explore the general hypothesis that environmental and occupational factors influence health outcomes and risk-taking behavior among active duty Air Force personnel. Several databases containing demographics, medical records, health survey responses, and safety incident reports were cleaned, validated, and linked to form a comprehensive, relational database. The final step involved removing and transforming personally identifiable information to form a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act compliant limited database. Initial data consisted of over 62.8 million records containing 221 variables. When completed, approximately 23.9 million clean and valid records with 214 variables remained. With a clean, robust database, future analysis aims to identify high-risk career fields for targeted interventions or uncover potential protective factors in low-risk career fields., (Reprint & Copyright © 2016 Association of Military Surgeons of the U.S.)

Background: During summer 2009, a US Navy ship experienced an influenza-like illness outbreak with 126 laboratory-confirmed cases of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus among the approximately 2000-person crew., Methods: During September 24-October 9, 2009, a retrospective seroepidemiologic investigation was conducted to characterize the outbreak. We administered questionnaires, reviewed medical records, and collected post-outbreak sera from systematically sampled crewmembers. We used real-time reverse transcription-PCR or microneutralization assays to detect evidence of H1N1 virus infection., Results: Retrospective serologic data demonstrated that the overall H1N1 virus infection attack rate was 32%. Weighted H1N1 virus attack rates were higher among marines (37%), junior-ranking personnel (34%), and persons aged 19-24 years (36%). In multivariable analysis, a higher risk of illness was found for women versus men (odds ratio [OR] = 2.2; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.1-4.4), marines versus navy personnel (OR = 1.7; 95% CI, 1.0-2.9), and those aged 19-24 versus ≥ 35 years (OR = 3.9; 95% CI, 1.2-12.8). Fifty-three percent of infected persons did not recall respiratory illness symptoms. Among infected persons, only 35% met criteria for acute respiratory illness and 11% for influenza-like illness., Conclusions: Approximately half of H1N1 infections were asymptomatic, and thus, the attack rate was higher than estimated by clinical illness alone. Enhanced infection control measures including pre-embarkation illness screening, improved self-reporting of illness, isolation of ill and quarantine of exposed contacts, and prompt antiviral chemoprophylaxis and treatment might be useful in controlling shipboard influenza outbreaks., (Published 2013. Background: In 2010, malaria caused approximately 216 million infections in people and 655,000 deaths. In the United States, imported malaria cases occur every year, primarily in returning travelers and immigrants from endemic countries. In 2010, five Plasmodium falciparum malaria cases occurred among crew members of one US commercial airline company (Airline A). This investigation aimed to assess the malaria prevention knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of Airline A crew members to provide information for potential interventions., Methods: The web link to a self-administered on-line survey was distributed by internal company communications to Airline A pilots and flight attendants (FA) eligible for international travel. The survey collected demographic information as well as occupation, work history, and malaria prevention education., Results: Of approximately 7,000 nonrandomly selected crew members, 220 FA and 217 pilots completed the survey (6%). Respondents correctly identified antimalarial medication (91% FA, 95% pilots) and insect repellents (96% FA, 96% pilots) as effective preventive measures. While in malaria-intense destinations, few FA and less than half of pilots always took antimalarial medication (4% FA, 40% pilots) yet many often spent greater than 30 minutes outdoors after sundown (71% FA, 66% pilots). Less than half in both groups always used insect repellents (46% FA, 47% pilots). Many respondents were unaware of how to get antimalarial medications (52% FA, 30% pilots) and were concerned about their side effects (61% FA, 31% pilots)., Conclusion: Overall, FA and pilots demonstrated good knowledge of malaria prevention, but many performed risky activities while practicing only some recommended malaria preventive measures. In the β-hydroquinone (β-HQ)-Xe crystal, the Xe guest is placed between two hexagonal rings of coupled [···O-H···O-](6) H-bonds. This clathrate is treated as the model for monitoring the H-bonding system with the Xe participation. Three kinds of isotope effects due to the H/D substitution in the [···O-H···O-](6) bonds are considered: (i) structural changes in the clathrate (X-ray diffraction), (ii) variations of (129)Xe NMR signal of the guest (CP MAS), and (iii) variations of selected vibrations of the host (IR). This study predicts subtle inclination of every other hydroxyl group of the [···O-H···O-](6) rings into the Xe atom and formation of six Xe···H-O pairs in every cage, the frequency shift of the γOH mode due to these contacts, -ΔγOH(Xe···H) > 74 cm(-1), as well as the enthalpy formation, -ΔH(Xe···H) > 6-8 kJ mol(-1). Our IR results reveal a tendency of the Xe atom to form the H-bond-like network inside its cage and much weaker Xe···D-O interactions in the H/D substituted crystal. The (129)Xe NMR results do not reflect this kind of interactions due to averaging of the (129)Xe shielding phenomena, probably. We also predict elongation of the O···O distances due to the β-HQ-Xe crystal heating and the Xe escape.
