A simple approach was developed to computationally construct a polymer dataset by combining simplified molecular-input line-entry system (SMILES) strings of a targeted polymer backbone and a variety of molecular fragments. This method was used to create 14 polymer datasets by combining seven polymer backbones and molecules from two large molecular datasets (MOSES and QM9). Polymer backbones that were studied include four polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based backbones, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(allyl glycidyl ether) (PAGE), and polyphosphazene (PPZ). The generated polymer datasets can be used for various cheminformatics tasks, including high-throughput screening for gas permeability and selectivity. This study utilized machine learning (ML) models to screen the polymers for CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 gas separation using membranes. Several polymers of interest were identified. The results highlight that employing an ML model fitted to polymer selectivities leads to higher accuracy in predicting polymer selectivity compared to using the ratio of predicted permeabilities.

Sensing technologies based on plasmonic nanomaterials are of interest for various chemical, biological, environmental, and medical applications. In this work, an incorporation strategy of colloidal plasmonic nanoparticles (pNPs) in microporous polymer for realizing distinct sorption-induced plasmonic sensing is reported. This approach is demonstrated by introducing tin-doped indium oxide pNPs into a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1). The composite film (pNPs-polymer) provides distinct and tunable optical features on the fiber optic (FO) platform that can be used as a signal transducer for gas sensing (e.g., CO 2 ) under atmospheric conditions. The resulting pNPs-polymer composite demonstrates high sensitivity response on FO in the evanescent field configuration, provided by the dramatic response of modes above the total-internal-reflection angle. Furthermore, by varying the pNPs content in the polymer matrix, the optical behavior of the pNPs-polymer composite film can be tuned to affect the operational wavelength by over several hundred nanometers and the sensitivity of the sensor in the near-infrared range. In this perspective article, we provide a detailed outlook on recent developments of high-performance membranes used in CO 2 separation applications. A wide range of membrane materials including polymers of intrinsic microporosity, thermally rearranged polymers, metal-organic framework membranes, poly ionic liquid membranes, and facilitated transport membranes were surveyed from the recent literature. In addition, mixed matrix and polymer blend membranes were covered. The CO 2 separation performance, as well as other membrane properties such as film flexibility, processibility, aging, and plasticization, were analyzed.

Here, we present novel chemical sorbents based on polymers with intrinsic microporosity (PIMs). For the first time, alkylamines were incorporated in PIMs through an acid-base interaction to create a chemisorbent. The amine-appended PIMs not only showed a nearly four-fold enhancement in CO 2 loading capacity (36.4 cc/g at 0.15 bar and 298 K) and very high CO 2 /N 2 selectivity compared to neat PIM-1 but also proved to have stable performance when cycled between adsorption and desorption isotherms under both dry and humid conditions that are typical for postcombustion CO 2 capture.

This study presents the fabrication of a new mixed matrix membrane using two microporous polymers: a polymer of intrinsic microporosity PIM-1 and a benzimidazole linked polymer, BILP-101, and their CO 2 separation properties from post-combustion flue gas. 17, 30 and 40 wt% loadings of BILP-101 into PIM-1 were tested, resulting in mechanically stable films showing very good interfacial interaction due to the inherent H-bonding capability of the constituent materials. Gas transport studies showed that BILP-101/PIM-1 membranes exhibit high CO 2 permeability (7200 Barrer) and selectivity over N 2 (15). The selected hybrid membrane was further tested for CO 2 separation using actual flue gas from a coal-fired power plant.

Alumina nanoparticles are widely used as nanofillers for polymer nanocomposites. Among several different polymorphs of alumina, α-alumina has the most desirable combination of physical properties. Hence, the attachment of polymer chains to α-alumina to enhance compatibility in polymeric matrixes is an important goal. However, the chemical inertness and low concentration of surface hydroxyl groups have rendered polymer modification of α-alumina a long-standing challenge. Herein, we report that activation of α-alumina in concentrated or molten NaOH as well as in molten K2S2O7 increased polymer graft density up to 50%, thereby facilitating the synthesis of α-alumina brush particles with uniform grafting density of 0.05 nm(-2) that are readily miscible or dispersible in organic solvents or in chemically compatible polymeric hosts.

Rational design concepts were used to prepare a novel porous benzimidazole-linked polymer (BILP-101) in a simple one-pot reaction. BILP-101 has exhibited ultra-microporosity (0.54 nm), very high CO2 uptake (∼1 mmol g(-1), 4 wt%, 0.15 bar/298 K) and exceptional CO2/N2 selectivity of 80 (298 K), which results in remarkable working capacity and regenerability for CO2 capture applications.

Benzimidazole-linked polymers (BILPs) are emerging candidates for gas storage and separation applications; however, their current synthetic methods offer limited control over textural properties which are vital for their multifaceted use. In this study, we investigate the impact of acid-catalyzed formation rates of the imidazole units on the porosity levels of BILPs and subsequent effects on CO2 and CH4 binding affinities and selective uptake of CO2 over CH4 and N2. Treatment of 3,3'-Diaminobenzidine tetrahydrochloride hydrate with 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)benzene and 1,3,5-(4-formylphenyl)-benzene in anhydrous DMF afforded porous BILP-15 (448 m(2) g(-1)) and BILP-16 (435 m(2) g(-1)), respectively. Alternatively, the same polymers were prepared from the neutral 3,3'-Diaminobenzidine and catalytic amounts of aqueous HCl. The resulting polymers denoted BILP-15(AC) and BILP-16(AC) exhibited optimal surface areas; 862 m(2) g(-1) and 643 m(2) g(-1), respectively, only when 2 equiv of HCl (0.22 M) was used. In contrast, the CO2 binding affinity (Qst) dropped from 33.0 to 28.9 kJ mol(-1) for BILP-15 and from 32.0 to 31.6 kJ mol(-1) for BILP-16. According to initial slope calculations at 273 K/298 K, a notable change in CO2/N2 selectivity was observed for BILP-15(AC) (61/50) compared to BILP-15 (83/63). Similarly, ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) calculations also show the higher specific surface area of BILP-15(AC) and BILP-16(AC) compromises their CO2/N2 selectivity.

Hole-some mixture: A 2D mesoporous covalent organic framework (see figure) featuring expanded pyrene cores and linked by imine linkages has a high surface area (SA(BET) = 2723 m(2)  g(-1)) and exhibits significant gas storage capacities under high pressure, which make this class of material very promising for gas storage applications., (Copyright © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
