Weakly magnetized shock waves are paramount to a large diversity of environments, including supernova remnants, blazars, and binary-neutron-star mergers. Understanding the distribution of energy between electrons and ions within these astrophysical shock waves spanning a wide spectrum of velocities is a long-standing challenge. In this study, we present a unified model for the downstream electron temperature within unmagnetized shock waves. Encompassing velocities from Newtonian to relativistic, we probe regimes representative of the gradual deceleration of the forward shock in the late gamma-ray burst afterglow phase, such as GRB 170817A. In our model, heating results from an ambipolar electric field generated by the difference in inertia between electrons and ions, coupled with rapid electron scattering in the decelerating turbulence. Our findings demonstrate that the electron temperature consistently represents $10\%$ of the incoming ion kinetic energy in the shock front frame over the full range of shock velocities., Comment: Proceedings of HEPRO VIII (Paris 2023)

The energy partition in high Mach number collisionless shock waves is central to a wide range of high-energy astrophysical environments. We present a new theoretical model for electron heating that accounts for the energy exchange between electrons and ions at the shock. The fundamental mechanism relies on the difference in inertia between electrons and ions, resulting in differential scattering of the particles off a decelerating magnetically-dominated microturbulence across the shock transition. We show that the self-consistent interplay between the resulting ambipolar-type electric field and diffusive transport of electrons leads to efficient heating in the magnetic field produced by the Weibel instability in the high-Mach number regime and is consistent with fully kinetic simulations., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 table; Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

By leveraging their resources, influence, and diplomatic initiatives, S20 academies can foster an enabling environment for international collaborations in astronomy, facilitate knowledge exchange, and drive scientific advancements that benefit humanity. Policy Brief on "AstroInformatics, Recommendations for Global Collaboration", distilled from panel discussions during S20 Policy Webinar on Astroinformatics for Sustainable Development held on 6-7 July 2023. The deliberations encompassed a wide array of topics, including broad astroinformatics, sky surveys, large-scale international initiatives, global data repositories, space-related data, regional and international collaborative efforts, as well as workforce development within the field. These discussions comprehensively addressed the current status, notable achievements, and the manifold challenges that the field of astroinformatics currently confronts. The G20 nations present a unique opportunity due to their abundant human and technological capabilities, coupled with their widespread geographical representation. Leveraging these strengths, significant strides can be made in various domains. These include, but are not limited to, the advancement of STEM education and workforce development, the promotion of equitable resource utilization, and contributions to fields such as Earth Science and Climate Science. We present a concise overview, followed by specific recommendations that pertain to both ground-based and space data initiatives. Our team remains readily available to furnish further elaboration on any of these proposals as required. Furthermore, we anticipate further engagement during the upcoming G20 presidencies in Brazil (2024) and South Africa (2025) to ensure the continued discussion and realization of these objectives. Magnetic reconnection is an important source of energetic particles in systems ranging from astrophysics to the laboratory. The large separation of spatiotemporal scales involved makes it critical to determine the minimum physical model containing the necessary physics for modeling particle acceleration. By resolving the energy gain from ideal and nonideal magnetohydrodynamic electric fields self-consistently in kinetic particle-in-cell simulations of reconnection, we conclusively show the dominant role of the nonideal field for the early stage of energization known as injection. The importance of the nonideal field increases with magnetization, guide field, and in three-dimensions, indicating its general importance for reconnection in natural astrophysical systems. We obtain the statistical properties of the injection process from the simulations, paving the way for the development of extended MHD models capable of accurately modeling particle acceleration in large-scale systems. The novel analysis method developed in this study can be applied broadly to give new insight into a wide range of processes in plasma physics.

We present optical observations of type Ia supernova (SN) 2019ein, starting at 2 days after the estimated explosion date. The spectra and the light curves show that SN 2019ein belongs to the High-Velocity (HV) and Bload Line groups with relatively rapid decline in the light curves (Delta m15(B) = 1.36 +- 0.02 mag) and the short rise time (15.37 +- 0.55 days). The Si II 6355 velocity, associated with a photospheric component but not with a detached high-velocity feature, reached ~ 20,000 km s-1 at 12 days before the B-band maximum. The line velocity however decreased very rapidly and smoothly toward the maximum light, where it was ~ 13,000 km s-1 as relatively low among HV SNe. This indicates that the speed of the spectral evolution of HV SNe Ia is correlated not only to the velocity at the maximum light, but also to the light curve decline rate like the case for Normal-Velocity (NV) SNe Ia. Spectral synthesis modeling shows that the outermost layer at > 17,000 km s-1 is well described by the O-Ne-C burning layer extending to at least 25,000 km s-1, and there is no unburnt carbon below 30,000 km s-1; these properties are largely consistent with the delayed detonation scenario, and are shared with the prototypical HV SN 2002bo despite the large difference in Delta m15(B). This structure is strikingly different from that derived for the well-studied NV SN 2011fe. We suggest that the relation between the mass of 56Ni (or Delta m15) and the extent of the O-Ne-C burning layer provides an important constraint on the explosion mechanism(s) of HV and NV SNe., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figres, Accepted to ApJ

We report X-ray, optical, and near-infrared monitoring of the new X-ray transient MAXI J1820$+$070 discovered with MAXI on 2018 March 11. Its X-ray intensity reached $\sim 2$ Crab in 2--20 keV at the end of March, and then gradually decreased until the middle of June. In this period, the X-ray spectrum was described by Comptonization of the disk emission, with a photon index of $\sim$1.5 and an electron temperature of $\sim$50 keV, which is consistent with a black hole X-ray binary in the low/hard state. The electron temperature and the photon index were slightly decreased and increased with increasing flux, respectively. The source showed significant X-ray flux variation on timescales of seconds. This short-term variation was found to be associated with changes in the spectral shape, and the photon index became slightly harder at higher fluxes. This suggests that the variation was produced by a change in the properties of the hot electron cloud responsible for the strong Comptonization. Modeling a multi-wavelength SED around the X-ray flux peak at the end of March, covering the near-infrared to X-ray bands, we found that the optical and near-infrared fluxes were likely contributed substantially by the jet emission. Before this outburst, the source was never detected in the X-ray band with MAXI (with a 3$\sigma$ upper limit of $\sim$0.2 mCrab in 4--10 keV, obtained from the 7-year data in 2009--2016), whereas weak optical and infrared activity was found at their flux levels $\sim$3 orders of magnitude lower than the peak fluxes in the outburst., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the early-phase spectra and the light curves of the broad-lined supernova (SN) 2016coi from $t=7$ to $67$ days after the estimated explosion date. This SN was initially reported as a broad-lined Type SN Ic (SN Ic-BL). However, we found that spectra up to $t=12$ days exhibited the He~{\sc i} $\lambda$5876, $\lambda$6678, and $\lambda$7065 absorption lines. We show that the smoothed and blueshifted spectra of normal SNe Ib are remarkably similar to the observed spectrum of SN 2016coi. The line velocities of SN 2016coi were similar to those of SNe Ic-BL and significantly faster than those of SNe Ib. Analyses of the line velocity and light curve suggest that the kinetic energy and the total ejecta mass of SN 2016coi are similar to those of SNe Ic-BL. Together with broad-lined SNe 2009bb and 2012ap for which the detection of He~{\sc i} were also reported, these SNe could be transitional objects between SNe Ic-BL and SNe Ib, and be classified as broad-lined Type `Ib' SNe (SNe `Ib'-BL). Our work demonstrates the diversity of the outermost layer in broad-lined SNe, which should be related to the variety of the evolutionary paths., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures. We present extensively dense observations of the super-Chandrasekhar supernova (SC SN) candidate SN 2012dn from $-11$ to $+140$ days after the date of its $B$-band maximum in the optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths conducted through the OISTER ToO program. The NIR light curves and color evolutions up to 35 days after the $B$-band maximum provided an excellent match with those of another SC SN 2009dc, providing a further support to the nature of SN 2012dn as a SC SN. We found that SN 2012dn exhibited strong excesses in the NIR wavelengths from $30$ days after the $B$-band maximum. The $H$ and $K_{s}$-band light curves exhibited much later maximum dates at $40$ and $70$ days after the $B$-band maximum, respectively, compared with those of normal SNe Ia. The $H$ and $K_{s}$-band light curves subtracted by those of SN 2009dc displayed plateaued evolutions, indicating a NIR echo from the surrounding dust. The distance to the inner boundary of the dust shell is limited to be $4.8 - 6.4\times10^{-2}$ pc. No emission lines were found in its early phase spectrum, suggesting that the ejecta-CSM interaction could not occur. On the other hand, we found no signature that strongly supports the scenario of dust formation. The mass loss rate of the pre-explosion system is estimated to be $10^{-6}-10^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, assuming that the wind velocity of the system is $10-100$ km~s$^{-1}$, which suggests that the progenitor of SN 2012dn could be a recurrent nova system. We study the extent to which very bright (-23.0 < MUV < -21.75) Lyman-break selected galaxies at redshifts z~7 display detectable Lya emission. To explore this issue, we have obtained follow-up optical spectroscopy of 9 z~7 galaxies from a parent sample of 24 z~7 galaxy candidates selected from the 1.65 sq.deg COSMOS-UltraVISTA and SXDS-UDS survey fields using the latest near-infrared public survey data, and new ultra-deep Subaru z'-band imaging (which we also present and describe in this paper). Our spectroscopy has yielded only one possible detection of Lya at z=7.168 with a rest-frame equivalent width EW_0 = 3.7 (+1.7/-1.1) Angstrom. The relative weakness of this line, combined with our failure to detect Lya emission from the other spectroscopic targets allows us to place a new upper limit on the prevalence of strong Lya emission at these redshifts. For conservative calculation and to facilitate comparison with previous studies at lower redshifts, we derive a 1-sigma upper limit on the fraction of UV bright galaxies at z~7 that display EW_0 > 50 Angstrom, which we estimate to be < 0.23. This result may indicate a weak trend where the fraction of strong Lya emitters ceases to rise, and possibly falls between z~6 and z~7. Our results also leave open the possibility that strong Lya may still be more prevalent in the brightest galaxies in the reionization era than their fainter counterparts. A larger spectroscopic sample of galaxies is required to derive a more reliable constraint on the neutral hydrogen fraction at z~7 based on the Lya fraction in the bright galaxies., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We conducted an optical and near-infrared polarimetric observation of the highly dormant Jupiter-Family Comet, 209P/LINEAR. Because of its low activity, we were able to determine the linear polarization degrees of the coma dust particles and nucleus independently, that is $P_n$=30.3$^{+1.3}_{-0.9}$% at $\alpha$=92.2$^\circ$ and $P_n$=31.0$^{+1.0}_{-0.7}$% at $\alpha$=99.5$^\circ$ for the nucleus, and $P_c$=28.8$^{+0.4}_{-0.4}$% at $\alpha$=92.2$^\circ$ and 29.6$^{+0.3}_{-0.3}$% at $\alpha$=99.5$^\circ$ for the coma. We detected no significant variation in $P$ at the phase angle coverage of 92.2$^\circ$-99.5$^\circ$, which may imply that the obtained polarization degrees are nearly at maximum in the phase-polarization curves. By fitting with an empirical function, we obtained the maximum values of linear polarization degrees $P_\mathrm{max}$=30.8% for the nucleus and $P_\mathrm{max}$=29.6% for the dust coma. The $P_\mathrm{max}$ of the dust coma is consistent with those of dust-rich comets. The low geometric albedo of $P_v$=0.05 was derived from the slope-albedo relationship and was associated with high $P_\mathrm{max}$. We examined $P_\mathrm{max}$-albedo relations between asteroids and 209P, and found that the so-called Umov law seems to be applicable on this cometary surface., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures, accepted on 2015 October 14 for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We report the multi-wavelength identification of the X-ray sources found in the Subaru-XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) using deep imaging data covering the wavelength range between the far-UV to the mid-IR. We select a primary counterpart of each X-ray source by applying the likelihood ratio method to R-band, 3.6micron, near-UV, and 24micron source catalogs as well as matching catalogs of AGN candidates selected in 1.4GHz radio and i'-band variability surveys. Once candidates of Galactic stars, ultra-luminous X-ray sources in a nearby galaxy, and clusters of galaxies are removed there are 896 AGN candidates in the sample. We conduct spectroscopic observations of the primary counterparts with multi-object spectrographs in the optical and NIR; 65\% of the X-ray AGN candidates are spectroscopically-identified. For the remaining X-ray AGN candidates, we evaluate their photometric redshift with photometric data in 15 bands. Utilising the multi-wavelength photometric data of the large sample of X-ray selected AGNs, we evaluate the stellar masses, M*, of the host galaxies of the narrow-line AGNs. The distribution of the stellar mass is remarkably constant from z=0.1 to 4.0. The relation between M* and 2--10 keV luminosity can be explained with strong cosmological evolution of the relationship between the black hole mass and M*. We also evaluate the scatter of the UV-MIR spectral energy distribution (SED) of the X-ray AGNs as a function of X-ray luminosity and absorption to the nucleus. The scatter is compared with galaxies which have redshift and stellar mass distribution matched with the X-ray AGN. The UV-NIR SEDs of obscured X-ray AGNs are similar to those of the galaxies in the matched sample. In the NIR-MIR range, the median SEDs of X-ray AGNs are redder, but the scatter of the SEDs of the X-ray AGN broadly overlaps that of the galaxies in the matched sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ Subaru special issue. 42 pages, 22 figures. We report observations of the Type Iax supernova (SN Iax) 2012Z at optical and near-infrared wavelengths from immediately after the explosion until $\sim$ $260$ days after the maximum luminosity using the Optical and Infrared Synergetic Telescopes for Education and Research (OISTER) Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) program and the Subaru telescope. We found that the near-infrared (NIR) light curve evolutions and color evolutions are similar to those of SNe Iax 2005hk and 2008ha. The NIR absolute magnitudes ($M_{J}\sim-18.1$ mag and $M_{H}\sim-18.3$ mag) and the rate of decline of the light curve ($\Delta$ $m_{15}$($B$)$=1.6 \pm 0.1$ mag) are very similar to those of SN 2005hk ($M_{J}\sim-17.7$ mag, $M_{H}\sim$$-18.0$ mag, and $\Delta$ $m_{15}$($B$)$\sim1.6$ mag), yet differ significantly from SNe 2008ha and 2010ae ($M_{J}\sim-14 - -15$ mag and $\Delta$ $m_{15}$($B$)$\sim2.4-2.7$ mag). The estimated rise time is $12.0 \pm 3.0$ days, which is significantly shorter than that of SN 2005hk or any other Ia SNe. The rapid rise indicates that the $^{56}$Ni distribution may extend into the outer layer or that the effective opacity may be lower than that in normal SNe Ia. The late-phase spectrum exhibits broader emission lines than those of SN 2005hk by a factor of 6--8. Such high velocities of the emission lines indicate that the density profile of the inner ejecta extends more than that of SN 2005hk. Multi-wavelength observations of the black-widow binary system 2FGL J2339.6-0532 are reported. The Fermi gamma-ray source 2FGL J2339.6-0532 was recently categorized as a black widow in which a recycled millisecond pulsar (MSP) is evaporating up the companion star with its powerful pulsar wind. Our optical observations show clear sinusoidal light curves due to the asymmetric temperature distribution of the companion star. Assuming a simple geometry, we constrained the range of the inclination angle of the binary system to 52$^{\circ}$ < i < 59$^{\circ}$, which enables us to discuss the interaction between the pulsar wind and the companion in detail. The X-ray spectrum consists of two components: a soft, steady component that seems to originate from the surface of the MSP, and a hard variable component from the wind-termination shock near the companion star. The measured X-ray luminosity is comparable to the bolometric luminosity of the companion, meaning that the heating efficiency is less than 0.5. In the companion orbit, 10$^{11}$ cm from the pulsar, the pulsar wind is already in particle dominant-stage, with a magnetization parameter of $\sigma$ < 0.1. In addition, we precisely investigated the time variations of the X-ray periodograms and detected a weakening of orbital modulation. The observed phenomenon may be related to an unstable pulsar-wind activity or a weak mass accretion, both of which can result in the temporal extinction of radio-pulse., Comment: 13pages, 11 figures, Accepted(ApJ)

We report a new observation of the Jupiter-family comet 209P/LINEAR during its 2014 return. The comet is recognized as a dust source of a new meteor shower, the May Camelopardalids. 209P/LINEAR was apparently inactive at a heliocentric distance rh = 1.6 au and showed weak activity at rh < 1.4 au. We found an active region of <0.001% of the entire nuclear surface during the comet's dormant phase. An edge-on image suggests that particles up to 1 cm in size (with an uncertainty of factor 3-5) were ejected following a differential power-law size distribution with index q=-3.25+-0.10. We derived a mass loss rate of 2-10 kg/s during the active phase and a total mass of ~5x10^7 kg during the 2014 return. The ejection terminal velocity of millimeter- to centimeter-sized particles was 1-4 m/s, which is comparable to the escape velocity from the nucleus (1.4 m/s). These results imply that such large meteoric particles marginally escaped from the highly dormant comet nucleus via the gas drag force only within a few months of the perihelion passage., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, accepted on 2014 December 11 for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present results of optical polarimetric and multi-band photometric observations for gamma-ray loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H 0323+342. This object has been monitored by 1.5 m Kanata telescope since 2012 September but following a gamma-ray flux enhancement detected by Fermi-LAT on MJD 56483 (2013 July 10) dense follow-up was performed by ten 0.5-2.0 m telescopes in Japan over one week. The 2-year R_C-band light curve showed clear brightening corresponding to the gamma-ray flux increase and then decayed gradually. The high state as a whole lasted for ~20 days, during which we clearly detected optical polarization from this object. The polarization degree (PD) of the source increased from 0-1% in quiescence to ~3% at maximum and then declined to the quiescent level, with the duration of the enhancement of less than 10 days. The moderate PD around the peak allowed us to precisely measure the daily polarization angle (PA). As a result, we found that the daily PAs were almost constant and aligned to the jet axis, suggesting that the magnetic field direction at the emission region is transverse to the jet. This implies either a presence of helical/toroidal magnetic field or transverse magnetic field compressed by shock(s). We also found small-amplitude intra-night variability during the 2-hour continuous exposure on a single night. We discuss these findings based on the turbulent multi-zone model recently advocated by Marscher (2014). Optical to ultraviolet (UV) spectrum showed a rising shape in the higher frequency and the UV magnitude measured by Swift/UVOT was steady even during the flaring state, suggesting that thermal emission from accretion disk is dominant in that band., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. CTA 102, classified as a flat spectrum radio quasar at z=1.037, produced exceptionally bright optical flare in 2012 September. Following Fermi-LAT detection of enhanced gamma-ray activity, we densely monitored this source in the optical and near-infrared bands for the subsequent ten nights using twelve telescopes in Japan and South-Africa. On MJD 56197 (2012 September 27, 4-5 days after the peak of bright gamma-ray flare), polarized flux showed a transient increase, while total flux and polarization angle remained almost constant during the "orphan polarized-flux flare". We also detected an intra-night and prominent flare on MJD 56202. The total and polarized fluxes showed quite similar temporal variations, but PA again remained constant during the flare. Interestingly, the polarization angles during the two flares were significantly different from the jet direction. Emergence of a new emission component with high polarization degree (PD) up to 40% would be responsible for the observed two flares, and such a high PD indicates a presence of highly ordered magnetic field at the emission site. We discuss that the well-ordered magnetic field and even the observed directions of polarization angle which is grossly perpendicular to the jet are reasonably accounted for by transverse shock(s) propagating down the jet., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We investigate mass-dependent galaxy evolution based on a large sample of (more than 50,000) K-band selected galaxies in a multi-wavelength catalog of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) and the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS)/Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). We employ the optical to near-infrared photometry to determine photometric redshifts of these galaxies. Then, we estimate the stellar mass of our sample galaxies using a standard fitting procedure. From the sample galaxies, we obtain the stellar mass function of galaxies and the cosmic stellar mass density up to z<4. Our results are consistent with previous studies and we find a considerable number of low-mass galaxies (M<10^{10.5}) at the redshift range 3

We present the X-ray source catalog in the Subaru/XMM-Newton deep survey. A continuous area of 1.14 deg^2 centered at R.A. = 02h18m and Dec. = -05d is mapped by seven pointings with XMM-Newton covering the 0.2-10 keV band. From the combined images of the EPIC pn and MOS cameras, we detect 866, 1114, 645, and 136 sources with sensitivity limits of 6x10^{-16}, 8x10^{-16}, 3x10^{-15}, and 5x10^{-15} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} in the 0.5-2, 0.5-4.5, 2-10, and 4.5-10 keV bands, respectively, with detection likelihood >= 7 (corresponding to a confidence level of 99.91%). The catalog consists of 1245 sources in total including 32 extended-source candidates. The averaged log N-log S relations are in good agreement with previous results, bridging the flux range between Chandra deep surveys and brighter surveys. The log N-log S relations show significant spatial variation among pointings on a scale of 0.2 deg^2. Analyzing the auto correlation function, we detect significant clustering signals from the 0.5-2 keV band sample, which can be fit with a power law form (\theta/\theta_c)^{-0.8} with a correlation length of \theta_c=5.9^{+1.0}_{-0.9} arcsec when the integral constraint term is included. In the 2-10 keV band, however, the clustering is not significant with a 90% upper limit of \theta_c < 1.5 arcsec., Comment: 17 pages, 32 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

We investigate clustering properties of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z~3 based on deep multi-waveband imaging data from optical to near-infrared wavelengths in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field. The LBGs are selected by U-V and V-z' colors in one contiguous area of 561 arcmin^2 down to z'=25.5. We study the dependence of the clustering strength on rest-frame UV and optical magnitudes, which can be indicators of star formation rate and stellar mass, respectively. The correlation length is found to be a strong function of both UV and optical magnitudes with brighter galaxies being more clustered than faint ones in both cases. Furthermore, the correlation length is dependent on a combination of UV and optical magnitudes in the sense that galaxies bright in optical magnitude have large correlation lengths irrespective of UV magnitude, while galaxies faint in optical magnitude have correlation lengths decreasing with decreasing UV brightness. These results suggest that galaxies with large stellar masses always belong to massive halos in which they can have various star formation rates, while galaxies with small stellar masses reside in less massive halos only if they have low star formation rates. We present our survey for optically faint variable objects using multi-epoch (8-10 epochs over 2-4 years) $i'$-band imaging data obtained with Subaru Suprime-Cam over 0.918 deg$^2$ in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF). We found 1040 optically variable objects by image subtraction for all the combinations of images at different epochs. This is the first statistical sample of variable objects at depths achieved with 8-10m class telescopes or HST. The detection limit for variable components is $i'_{\rm{vari}}\sim25.5$ mag. These variable objects were classified into variable stars, supernovae (SNe), and active galactic nuclei (AGN), based on the optical morphologies, magnitudes, colors, and optical-mid-infrared colors of the host objects, spatial offsets of variable components from the host objects, and light curves. Detection completeness was examined by simulating light curves for periodic and irregular variability. We detected optical variability for $36\pm2%$ ($51\pm3%$ for a bright sample with $i'<24.4$ mag) of X-ray sources in the field. Number densities of variable obejcts as functions of time intervals $\Delta{t}$ and variable component magnitudes $i'_{\rm{vari}}$ are obtained. Number densities of variable stars, SNe, and AGN are 120, 489, and 579 objects deg$^{-2}$, respectively. Bimodal distributions of variable stars in the color-magnitude diagrams indicate that the variable star sample consists of bright ($V\sim22$ mag) blue variable stars of the halo population and faint ($V\sim23.5$ mag) red variable stars of the disk population. There are a few candidates of RR Lyrae providing a possible number density of $\sim10^{-2}$ kpc$^{-3}$ at a distance of $>150$ kpc from the Galactic center., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the properties of active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected by optical variability in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF). Based on the locations of variable components and light curves, 211 optically variable AGN were reliably selected. We made three AGN samples; X-ray detected optically non-variable AGN (XA), X-ray detected optically variable AGN (XVA), and X-ray undetected optically variable AGN (VA). In the VA sample, we found a bimodal distribution of the ratio between the variable component flux and the host flux. One of these two components in the distribution, a class of AGN with a faint variable component $i'_{\rm{vari}}\sim25$ mag in bright host galaxies $i'\sim21$ mag, is not seen in the XVA sample. These AGN are expected to have low Eddington ratios if we naively consider a correlation between bulge luminosity and black hole mass. These galaxies have photometric redshifts $z_{\rm{photo}}\sim0.5$ and we infer that they are low-luminosity AGN with radiatively inefficient accretion flows (RIAFs). The properties of the XVA and VA objects and the differences from those of the XA objects can be explained within the unified scheme for AGN. We present luminosity functions (LFs) and various properties of Lya emitters (LAEs) at z=3.1, 3.7, and 5.7, in a 1 deg^2 sky of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) Field. We obtain a photometric sample of 858 LAE candidates based on deep Subaru/Suprime-Cam imaging data, and a spectroscopic sample of 84 confirmed LAEs from Subaru/FOCAS and VLT/VIMOS spectroscopy in a survey volume of ~10^6 Mpc^3 with a limiting Lya luminosity of ~3x10^42 erg/s. We derive the LFs of Lya and UV-continuum (~1500 \AA) for each redshift, taking into account the statistical error and the field-to-field variation. We find that the apparent Lya LF shows no significant evolution between z=3.1 and 5.7 within factors of 1.8 and 2.7 in L* and phi*, respectively. On the other hand, the UV LF of LAEs increases from z=3.1 to 5.7, indicating that galaxies with Lya emission are more common at earlier epochs. We identify six LAEs with AGN activities from our spectra combined with VLA, Spitzer, and XMM-Newton data. Among the photometrically selected LAEs at z=3.1 and 3.7, only ~1 % show AGN activities, while the brightest LAEs with logL(Lya) >~ 43.4-43.6 erg/s appear to always host AGNs. Our LAEs are bluer in UV-continuum color than dropout galaxies, suggesting lower extinction and/or younger stellar populations. Our stacking analyses provide upper limits to the radio luminosity and the f(HeII)/f(Lya) line fraction, and constrain the hidden star formation (+low-luminosity AGN) and the primordial population in LAEs., Comment: 75 pages, 27 figures; ApJS in press. Using mid-infrared and radio selection criteria, we pre-select a sample of candidate high-redshift type-2 quasars in the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF). To filter out starburst contaminants, we use a bayesian method to fit the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) between 24-microns and B-band, obtain photometric redshifts, and identify the best candidates for high-z type-2 quasars. This leaves us with 12 z_phot >= 1.7 type-2 quasar candidates in an area ~0.8 deg^2, of which only two have secure X-ray detections. The two detected sources have estimated column densities N_H~2 & 3x10^27 m^-2, i.e. heavily obscured but Compton-thin quasars. Given the large bolometric luminosities and redshifts of the undetected objects, the lack of X-ray detections suggests extreme absorbing columns N_H >= 10^28 m^-2 are typical. We have found evidence for a population of ``Compton-thick'' high-redshift type-2 quasars, at least comparable to, and probably larger than the type-1 quasar population, although spectroscopic confirmation of their AGN nature is important., Comment: 6 pages, 2 colour figures. We describe deep radio imaging at 1.4-GHz of the 1.3 square degree Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF), made with the Very Large Array in B and C configurations. We present a radio map of the entire field, and a catalogue of 505 sources covering 0.8 square degrees to a peak flux density limit of 100 microJy. Robust optical identifications are provided for 90% of the sources, and suggested IDs are presented for all but 14 (of which 7 are optically blank, and 7 are close to bright contaminating objects). We show that the optical properties of the radio sources do not change with flux density, suggesting that AGNs continue to contribute significantly at faint flux densities. We test this assertion by cross-correlating our radio catalogue with the X-ray source catalogue and conclude that radio-quiet AGNs become a significant population at flux densities below 300 microJy, and may dominate the population responsible for the flattening of the radio source counts if a significant fraction of them are Compton-thick., Comment: 18 pages, MNRAS, in press, full catalogue and hi-res figures at http://www.astro.livjm.ac.uk/~cjs/SXDS/radio/index.html

We report the results of a systematic near-infrared spectroscopic survey using the Subaru, VLT and Keck Telescopes of a sample of high redshift Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) mainly composed of submillimeter-selected galaxies. Our observations span the restframe optical range containing nebular emission lines such as H_beta, [OIII], and [OII], which are essential for making robust diagnostics of the physical properties of these ULIRGs. Using the H_alpha/H_beta emission line ratios, we derive internal extinction estimates for these galaxies similar to those of local ULIRGs:A_v~2.9+-0.5. Correcting the H_alpha estimates of the star formation rate for dust extinction using the Balmer decrement, results in rates which are consistent with those estimated from the far-infrared luminosity. The majority (>60%) of our sample show spectral features characteristic of AGN, with ~65% exhibiting broad Balmer emission lines. A proportion of these sources show relatively low [OIII]/H_beta line ratios, which are similar to those of Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies suggesting small mass black holes which are rapidly growing. In the subsample of our survey with both [OIII] and hard X-ray coverage, at least ~60% show an excess of [OIII] emission, by a factor of 5-10 times, relative to the hard X-ray luminosity compared to the correlation between these two properties seen in Seyferts and QSOs locally. From our spectral diagnostics, we propose that the strong [OIII] emission in these galaxies arises from shocks in dense gaseous regions in this vigorously star-forming population., Comment: 21 pages, accepted to ApJ

We obtained the number counts and the rest-frame B-band luminosity function of the color-selected old passively-evolving galaxies (OPEGs) at z=1 with very high statistical accuracy using a large and homogeneous sample of about 4000 such objects with z' <25 detected in the area of 1.03 deg^2 in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) field. Our selection criteria are defined on the i'-z' and R-z' color-magnitude plane so that OPEGs at z=0.9-1.1 with formation redshift z_f=2-10 are properly sampled. The limiting magnitude corresponds to the luminosity of galaxies with M_*+3 at z=0. We made a pilot redshift observations for 99 OPEG candidates with 19 < z' < 22 and found that at least 78% (73/93) of the entire sample, or 95% (73/77) of these whose redshifts were obtained are indeed lie between z=0.87 and 1.12 and the most of their spectra show the continuum break and strong Ca H and K lines, indicating that these objects are indeed dominated by the old stellar populations. We then compare our results with the luminosity functions of the color- or the morphologically-selected early type galaxies at z=0 taking the evolutionary factor into account and found that the number density of old passive galaxies with sim M_* magnitude at z~1 averaged over the SXDS area is 40-60% of the equivalently red galaxies and 60-85% of the morphologically-selected E/S0 galaxies at z=0 depending on their luminosity evolution. We performed deep K'-band imaging observations of 2 massive clusters, MS 0451.6-0305 at z = 0.55 and MS 0440.5+0204 at z = 0.19, for searching counterparts of the faint sub-mm sources behind these clusters, which would provide one of the deepest extremely red object(ERO) samples. Comparing our near-infrared images with optical images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and by the Subaru Telescope, we identified 13 EROs in these fields. The sky distributions of EROs are consistent with the previous results, that there is a sign of strong clustering among detected EROs. Also, the surface density with corrected lensing amplification factors in both clusters are in good agreement with that derived from previous surveys. We found 7 EROs and 3 additional very red objects in a small area (\sim 0.6 arcmin^2) of the MS 0451.6-0305 field around an extended SCUBA source. Many of their optical and near-infrared colors are consistent with dusty star-forming galaxies at high redshifts(z \sim 1.0-4.0), and they may be constituting a cluster of dusty starburst galaxies and/or lensed star-forming galaxies at high redshift. Their red J-K' colors and faint optical magnitudes suggest they are relatively old massive stellar systems with ages(>300 Mega years) suffering from dust obscuration. We present new optical images ($B$, $V$, and H$\alpha$) of the archetypical starburst/superwind galaxy M82 obtained with the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope to reveal new detailed structures of the superwind-driven nebula and the high-latitude dark lanes. The emission-line nebula is decomposed into (1) a ridge-dominated component comprising numerous filament/loop sub-structures whose overall morphology appears as a pair of narrow cylinders, and (2) a diffuse component extended over much wider opening angle from the nucleus. We suggest that these two components have different origins. The ridge-dominated component appears as a pair of cylinders rather than a pair of cones. Since this morphological property is similar to that of hot plasma probed by soft X-ray, this component seems to surround the hot plasma. On the other hand, the diffuse component may arise from dust grains which scatter stellar light from the galaxy. Since inner region of this component is seen over the prominent ^^ ^^ X"-shaped dark lanes streaming out from the nuclear region and they can be reproduced as a conical distribution of dust grains, there seems to be a dusty cold outflow as well as the hot one probed by soft X-ray and shock-excited optical emission lines. If this is the case, the presence of such high-latitude dust grains implies that neutral gaseous matter is also blown out during the course of the superwind activity., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. We propose a model for stellar binary systems consisting of a magnetic and a non-magnetic white-dwarf pair which is powered principally by electrical energy. In our model the luminosity is caused by resistive heating of the stellar atmospheres due to induced currents driven within the binary. This process is reminiscent of the Jupiter-Io system, but greatly increased in power because of the larger companion and stronger magnetic field of the primary. Electrical power is an alternative stellar luminosity source, following on from nuclear fusion and accretion. We find that this source of heating is sufficient to account for the observed X-ray luminosity of the 9.5-min binary RX J1914+24, and provides an explanation for its puzzling characteristics., Comment: accepted by MNRAS

We present new optical spectroscopy of the high-redshift powerful radio galaxy MRC 0406$-$244 at redshift of 2.429. We find that the two extensions toward NW and SE probed in the rest-frame ultraviolet image are heated mainly by the nonthermal continuum of the active galactic nucleus. However, each extension shows a shell-like morphology, suggesting that they are a pair of superbubbles induced by the superwind activity rather than by the interaction between the radio jet and the ambient gas clouds. If this is the case, the intense starburst responsible for the formation of superbubbles could occur $\sim 1 \times 10^9$ yr ago. On the other hand, the age of the radio jets may be of the order of $\sim 10^6$ yr, being much shorter than the starburst age. Therefore, the two events, i.e., the starburst and the radio-jet activities, are independent phenomena. However, their directions of the expanding motions could be governed by the rotational motion of the gaseous component in the host galaxy. We have investigated the optical and near-infrared colors of K'-selected galaxies in clusters at z ~ 1.2 near to the radio galaxy 3C 324 using images obtained with the Subaru telescope and archival HST data. The distribution of colors of the galaxies in the cluster region is found to be fairly broad, and it may imply significant scatter in their star-formation histories, although the effect of contamination of field galaxies is uncertain. The red sequence of galaxies whose R-K colors are consistent with passive evolution models for old galaxies is found to be truncated at K' ~ 20 mag, and there are few fainter galaxies with similar red colors in the cluster region. We find that the bulge-dominated galaxies selected by quantitative morphological classification form a broad sequence in the color-magnitude diagram, whose slope is much steeper than that expected from metallicity variations within a passively evolving coeval galaxy population. We argue that the observed color-magnitude sequence can be explained by metallicity and age variations, and the fainter galaxies with K' > 20 mag may be 1-2 Gyr younger than the brighter galaxies. Some spatial segregation of the color and K'-band luminosity is seen in the sky distribution; the redder and the brighter objects tend to be located near 3C 324., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ
