OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the relationship between postoperative infection-related mortality and lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio (LCR), a newly defined parameter with the combination of inflammatory and immune parameters, in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 2016 and November 2021, 236 patients who underwent on-pomp cardiac surgery with median sternotomy and developed postoperative infection were analyzed retrospectively. Patients were divided into six groups according to the types of postoperative infection. Preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative variables of the patient groups were compared, and factors affecting postoperative mortality were evaluated. RESULTS: The mortality rate in the patient group we included in the study was 22.9%. Mortality rates did not differ significantly between the infection groups. However, when the LCR value was evaluated between the groups, there was a statistically significant difference (p<0.001). The preoperative LCR cut-off value, which predicts postoperative infection-related mortality, was determined as 133.46 (area under the curve (AUC): 0.607, p=0.017, 48.1% sensitivity, and 47.8% specificity). In the multivariate analysis, postoperative cerebrovascular event (OR: 78.365, 95% CI: 12.367-496.547, p<0.001) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stay (odds ratio (OR): 1.136, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.004-1.284, p=0.042) variables were found to be independent predictive factors of postoperative infection-related mortality in the model. There was no positive differentiation of the type of infection in predicting mortality. CONCLUSIONS: The calculated LCR value is a novel and remarkable parameter in estimating postoperative infection-related mortality in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, shortening content in a wire-cut cookie formulation was reduced at 10, 20, 30 and 40% and replaced with apricot kernel flour (AKF). The effects of increased concentrations of AKF on the properties of cookies were investigated. Protein, fat and total dietary fiber (TDF) contents of the apricot kernels were determined as 21.8%, 40.2% and 35.8%, respectively, which confirmed that the apricot kernel is an important source of dietary protein as well as oil and fiber. Addition of AKF decreased the spread ratio and increased the hardness of the cookies (P ≤ 0.01). However, sensory evaluation revealed that the cookies containing AKF were acceptable to the panelists at all concentrations (P ≤ 0.01). TDF contents of the cookies increased significantly (P ≤ 0.01) as the AKF supplemention increased. AKF is a suitable replacer of shortening in cookies at 10 and 20%. Apricot kernels are generally exported and the importing countries use it especially in the production of oil, benzaldehyde, cosmetics, active carbon and aroma. Apricot kernels are also utilized in retail bakeries and consumed as appetizers. Cookies are one of the most popular bakery products and textural characteristics of cookies are highly influenced by their fat content. Health specialists recommend that daily fat consumption should not exceed 30% of the total calories in a diet. In this study, the preparation of apricot kernel flour (AKF), which does not require much processing and has the advantage of including other nutrients, was achieved. Introduction: The aim of the present study was to determine the views and thoughts of dog owners in Türkiye on animal welfare. The research material consisted of data obtained from face-to-face surveys with 172 randomly selected dog owners. Half of the dog owners (54,7 %) were aware of the concept of animal welfare, and almost two-thirds (61,6 %) organized their dogs' living spaces according to animal welfare principles. Objective: In the current study, we aimed to ascertain the levels of heavy metals and radioactive elements in the ovarian follicular fluids of pregnant and non-pregnant Kyrgyz mares., Materials and Methods: To this end, follicular fluids were obtained from 49 Kyrgyz mares aged 3-5 years. The mares were in various stages of pregnancy (Group 1, n = 27) or were non-pregnant (Group 2, n = 22). We measured the levels of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), antimony (Sb), cobalt (Co), potassium (K), uranium (U), nickel (Ni), and thorium (Th) in follicular fluids using atomic emission mass spectrometry. Subsequently, the data were statistically analyzed according to whether the mare was pregnant or not, the pregnancy stage, the presence or absence of the corpus luteum in the ovaries, the corpus luteum's diameter if present, and the presence or absence and diameter of follicles., Results: We found that K levels were higher in non-pregnant mares (0.00564 ± 0.000590 ppm, p = 0.009). Furthermore, Ni (0.01033 ± 0.001880 ppm, p = 0.07) and K (0.00563 ± 0.000498 ppm, p = 0.026) levels were higher in mares with a follicle diameter of 1-3 cm. However, these results did not change according to the month of pregnancy, number of follicles, presence or absence of the corpus luteum in the ovaries, number of corpora lutea, and their diameters., Conclusion: Thus, we concluded that heavy metal and radioactive element levels in the ovarian follicular fluids of Kyrgyz mares do not significantly change with pregnancy status, and there are limited detrimental effects of pollution on the follicular fluids., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© The authors.)

Background: In ovo application is the process of administering some nutrients or components into the egg. The main purpose of this application is to ensure that some nutrients are provided to chicks with a short incubation period. Few studies were conducted with taurine in fertile eggs; especially, no observation of hatchability and chick quality has been found. In addition, taurine has an anti-stress impact that fights oxidative factors., Objective: To assess the hatchability and chick quality after in ovo taurine administration. To determine the stress that may occur as a result of in ovo application and whether taurine has a stress-reducing effect., Methods: A total of 1200 fertile eggs from a 34-week-old broiler breeder (Ross 308) flock were categorized into 4 groups with 75 eggs per replicate: control (uninjected), taurine group (0.30 mL dissolved taurine in distilled water), sham control (sterile distilled water) and perforation (eggs perforated and then waxed). On day 14 of incubation, an in ovo injection was administered to the albumen. Data on hatching parameters and hepatic HSP70 levels were obtained using relevant formulas and western blotting, respectively., Results: Control chicks exhibited higher hatchability than other groups, with the taurine group showing the lowest hatchability. The HSP70 levels were the highest in the perforation group compared to the control group. An increase of 21.37% in the taurine group and 83.45% in the sham control group was observed compared to the control group., Conclusions: The findings suggest that in ovo application may induce increased stress, whereas taurine may have positive effects in mitigating the stress caused by in ovo application., (© 2024 The Authors. The Radar for Europa Assessment and Sounding: Ocean to Near-surface (REASON) is a dual-frequency ice-penetrating radar (9 and 60 MHz) onboard the Europa Clipper mission. REASON is designed to probe Europa from exosphere to subsurface ocean, contributing the third dimension to observations of this enigmatic world. The hypotheses REASON will test are that (1) the ice shell of Europa hosts liquid water, (2) the ice shell overlies an ocean and is subject to tidal flexing, and (3) the exosphere, near-surface, ice shell, and ocean participate in material exchange essential to the habitability of this moon. REASON will investigate processes governing this material exchange by characterizing the distribution of putative non-ice material (e.g., brines, salts) in the subsurface, searching for an ice-ocean interface, characterizing the ice shell's global structure, and constraining the amplitude of Europa's radial tidal deformations. REASON will accomplish these science objectives using a combination of radar measurement techniques including altimetry , reflectometry , sounding , interferometry , plasma characterization , and ranging . Building on a rich heritage from Earth, the moon, and Mars, REASON will be the first ice-penetrating radar to explore the outer solar system. Because these radars are untested for the icy worlds in the outer solar system, a novel approach to measurement quality assessment was developed to represent uncertainties in key properties of Europa that affect REASON performance and ensure robustness across a range of plausible parameters suggested for the icy moon. Introduction: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of parentage verification in Arabian and Thoroughbred horses in Türkiye using microsatellite markers. A total of 813 Arabian and 959 Thoroughbred horses were genotyped using a total of 17 microsatellite markers. The mean effective number of alleles was 3,34 and the mean number of alleles was 7,41 in Arabian horses. It was calculated that the mean He and Ho values in Arabian horses were 0,677 and 0,680, respectively. The mean effective number of alleles was 3,55 and the mean number of alleles was 6,59 in Thoroughbred horses. It was calculated that the mean Ho and He values in Thoroughbred horses were 0,697 and 0,684, respectively. When the studied Arabian and Thoroughbred horse populations are considered as a single population, the mean FIT, FST and FIS values were found to be 0,063, 0,074 and, - 0,011, respectively. Also, 4 loci in Arabian horses and 3 loci in Thoroughbred horses significantly deviated from HWE. The mean PIC value was 0,63 in Arabian horses and 0,64 in Thoroughbred horses. As a result; the microsatellites including the most informative 15 and 9 loci had a total value of > 0,9999 (11 and 7 loci > 0,999) in each population for PE - 1 and PE - 3, respectively. It has been concluded that parentage verification and genetic identification can be made successfully in the Arabian and Thoroughbred horse populations by using the microsatellite markers panel.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between mastitis and supra-mammary lymph nodes in lactating cows in terms of Pulsed-wave (PW) Doppler ultrasonographical measurements. A total of 102 head cows in lactation period were divided into three groups. The cows in which all mammary lobes were California mastitis test (CMT)-negative (n = 27) formed the 1 st group; those with CMT-positive mammary lobe (n = 43) formed the 2 nd group and the cows with clinical mastitis in at least one mammary lobe (n = 32) formed the 3 rd group. In PW Doppler ultrasonography, end-diastolic velocity, systolic peak velocity and time-averaged maximum velocity were measured at the most prominent artery of the lymph node. A quantitative scaling was performed by determining the pulsatile index and resistance index scales based on blood flow parameters. There was no statistically significant difference between the study groups in terms of PW Doppler ultrasonographical measurements of supra-mammary lymph nodes. In conclusion, the use of PW Doppler ultrasonographic data of the supra-mammary lymph nodes will not provide useful information about the current condition of mastitis in cows., Competing Interests: The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest.

Objectives: Information is scarce on levels of kisspeptin-1 and the kisspeptin-1 receptorin females after ovarian transplant. In this study, our aim was to explore serum estradiol, anti-Müllerian hormone, kisspeptin-1, and kisspeptin receptor levels, along with kisspeptin-1-positive cell density, in ovaries from rats after ovarian transplant., Materials and Methods: For this study, 28 female Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups, with sham surgery performed on rats in group 1 (control group). Group 2 rats had ovaries transplanted under the peritoneum, and group 3 rats had their own ovaries transplanted subcutaneously. Group 4 rats were maintained in an estrous state. Serum anti-Müllerian hormone, kisspeptin-1, estradiol, and ovarian kisspeptin receptor levels were determined using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Kisspeptin-1-positive cell densities in the ovaries were determined immunohistochemically.The ovaries were also examined histopathologically., Results: Our statistical analyses showed that levels of kisspeptin receptors in the ovaries were lowest in the subcutaneously transplanted group (group 3; 628.57 ± 35.69 pg/mL). The highest serum anti-Müllerian hormone levels were found in the estrous group (group 4; 16.91 ± 2.12 ng/mL). Differences between groups in terms of serum kisspeptin-1 and estradiol concentrations were not statistically significant., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that, in rats, results were better in the peritoneum transplant group than in the subcutaneous transplant group. We also found that serum anti-Müllerian hormone levels were lower in the transplant groups than in the estrous group, although levels were not completely decreased to zero. These results support the finding that ovarian activities continue after transplant.

Polycystic ovary syndrome represents a significant cause of female infertility. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of anti-Mul-lerian hormone (AMH), kisspeptin 1 (KISS-1), and kisspeptin 1 receptor (KISS1r) in rat models of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and controlled ovarian stimulation (COS). For this purpose, 28 rats were assigned into four groups. Estrus and Diestrus groups consisted of rats in estrus and diestrus phases, respectively, while COS and PCOS groups consisted of rats with induced COS and PCOS, respectively. The serum AMH, KISS-1, and estradiol levels, and ovarian KISS1r levels were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Furthermore, histopathological analysis of the ovary tissue was done and ovarian KISS-1 expression was determined by immunohistochemical assay. The results revealed that ovarian KISS1r levels were higher in the Estrus (1271.43±51.98 pg/mL) and COS (1191.43±85.67 pg/mL) groups, compared to Diestrus and PCOS groups. The highest level of AMH was found in the Estrus group (16.91±2.12 ng/mL). The results indicate that AMH had no effect on the development of COS and PCOS, while KISS-1 was found to affect the development of COS in rats.

This research communication aims to test the hypothesis that B-Mode, colour Doppler ultrasonographic measurements and characteristics can identify mastitis in dairy cows. A total of 102 lactating cows were divided into 3 groups: cows in which all mammary quarters were CMT-negative, cows with CMT-positive mammary quarters and cows with clinical mastitis in at least one quarter. Colour Doppler ultrasonography measurements of the supramammary lymph nodes revealed that distortion-type vascular morphology, the rate of type 4 vascular densities and the incidence of mixed-type vascular distributions were highest in the clinical mastitis group, whereas the frequency of avascularity in supramammary lymph nodes was highest in the CMT-negative group. All differences were significant. In conclusion, the use of B-mode and colour Doppler ultrasonographic measurements of the supramammary lymph nodes can provide useful information about the current condition of mastitis in cows, although its diagnostic potential remains to be determined.

The aim of the present study was to develop a new animal model for use in uterine torsion, uterine ischemia-reperfusion, and fetal hypoxia studies in rats. A total of 14 pregnant rats on their 18th-19th gestational days were used. The animals were randomly divided into two groups: those undergoing the shame operation (group 1), and those in which a 360 uterine torsion was performed using a novel technique, which was corrected 6 hours later (group 2). Subsequently, seven female and seven male rat pups aged 1 month were separated from the mothers in each group. The female rats were monitored until puberty via measuring the vaginal apertures. The 1-month old male rats and the female rats on reaching puberty were decapitated and histopathological tests were performed on the dissected organs, including the cerebral, visceral and genital organs. At the end of the study, no differences were observed between the groups with regard to abortions, offspring death rates and congenital abnormalities. It was observed that the time to reach puberty in female rats born from mothers with uterine torsion was longer, but the difference was statistically insignificant. No microscopic lesions were detected in the cerebral, visceral or genital organs of the offspring. Accordingly, it was concluded that offspring of mothers with the uterine torsion were not affected, at least in the short term. It was generally concluded that this animal model is appropriate for use in uterine torsion and ischemia-reperfusion studies, but is not appropriate for fetal hypoxia studies., Competing Interests: None.

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of platelet rich plasma (PRP) on the healing of fascia wherein peritonitis has been created., Methods: Twenty eight Wistar Albino rats were divided into four groups. Only a primary fascial repair following laparotomy was performed on Group 1, a primary fascial repair performed and PRP treatment applied following laparotomy on Group 2, and a fecal peritonitis created following laparotomy and a primary fascial repair carried out on Group 3. A fecal peritonitis was created following laparotomy and primary fascial repair and PRP treatment on the fascia was carried out on Group 4., Results: TNF-α was found to be significantly lower in the control group (Group 1). It was detected at the highest level in the group in which fecal peritonitis was created and PRP applied (Group 4). TGF-β was determined as being significantly higher only in Group 4. Histopathologically, the differences between the groups in terms of cell infiltration and collagen deposition were not found to be significant., Conclusion: When platelet rich plasma was given histologically and biochemicaly as wound healing parameters cellular infiltration, collagen accumulation, and tissue hydroxyiproline levels were not increased but neovascularization, fibroblast activation and TNF Alfa levels were increased and PRP accelerated wound healing.

Estrogen receptor a (ERalpha) gene has previously been found to related with sexual development and reproduction. In this study, on the basis of the sequences of human, cattle and caprine estrogen receptor a (ERalpha) genes, available in the GenBank database, sets of PCR primers were designed and used to amplify the ovine ERalpha gene exon 4 region. We identified six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the ERalpha exon 4. Some variations determined for exon 4 g.43A > G, p.T43A; g.49C > T, p.L49F; g.178A > T, p.T178S led to changes in the amino acids, but no amino acid changes were determined in g. 18G > C, g.27C > T, g.96G > A. These fragments were deposited in the GenBank database under accession number: JF262030-JF262035. It was noted in particular that White Karaman and Awassi breeds were similar to each other, whereas the Chios breed had a different variation.

A significant portion of the problems faced by veterinarians is related to communication. These problems are intensely experienced between veterinary practitioners and animal owners; yet no lectures or courses aiming to improve professional skills are available in the curriculum of veterinary schools in Turkey. In this study, all students currently enrolled at, and 1992 and 1998 graduates of, the Veterinary School of Firat University (VSFU), Turkey, were surveyed to evaluate the attitudes of veterinary students and graduates toward technical and professional skills. Data were collected from 581 students and 61 recent graduates via personal interviews with students and questionnaires mailed to graduates; information was obtained about participants' technical and professional skills. The overall response rate was 85%. The results show that learning about technical and professional skills is highly valued; competence and comfort in skill sets are associated with comfort in establishing communication with instructors. Positive correlations were also noted between feeling comfortable with and feeling competent in both skill sets. In conclusion, it appears to be essential to introduce courses addressing improvement of professional skills to the curriculum of veterinary schools in Turkey, given that a successful veterinarian profile requires feeling competent in and comfortable with both technical and professional skills.
