Objectives: The Ewing sarcoma (ES) family of tumor, appears as a bone or soft tissue lesion in a child and young adult. The most frequent translocation is EWS-FLI1 t(11q ; 22)(q24 ; q12) (90-95% cases), results in fusion of the EWS gene with a member of the ETS family. Our aim was to follow-up the patients with detected translocation in tumor tissue, peripheral blood and bone marrow. Patients and Methods: From October 2003 until January 2006 we received tumor samples (fixed in 10% buffered formalin and paraffin-embedded) paired with blood sdamples of eleven patients diagnosed with EWS during the treatment and we received six blood and bone marrow samples collected from patients after the treatment. Two patientzs died during chemotherapy. Total RNA was isolated from deparaffinized tissue sections by high pure RNA parrafin kit, from preserved blood samples by PAX gene Blood RNA Kit and from bone marrow samles by TRI reagent-BD extraction protocol. RNA quanlity check was performed by RT-PCR using specific primers for an interenal control-GAPDH (Glyceraldehyd-6-phosphate dehydrogenase). The EWS-FLI1 fusion transcripts were detected by RT-PCR using primers EWS22.2 Bam and FLI1C that specifically amplify both 125 pb type 1 fusion and 191 pb type 2 variant. Results: All samples were successfully amplified for GAPDH. Nine parafin samples were positive for type 1 EWS-FLI1 fusuin and two foe zype 2. Two blood samples were positive, one for type 1, and another one for type 2 fusion. The rest of the blood and bone marrow samples showed no positivity. Conclusion: This specific RT- PCR assay is essential for Ewing sarcoma diagnosis and monitoring minimal residual disease. All patients will be followed-up and impact of blood and bone marrow positivity will be assessed. Also the EWS/FLI1 type 1 and type 2 transcripts have to be consider as an important prognostical parameter.

Invertni papilom je epitelna neoplazma lateralnog zida nosa i susjednih sinusa karakteriziran sklonosti ponovnog javljanja i značajno povezan s karcinomom. Do sada nije bilo pouzdanih indikacijskih kriterija sklonosti ponovnog javljanja tumora niti maligne alteracije. Ispitivali smo moguću prognostičku važnost p53 i Ki67 u ovim tumorima. U studiju su bili uključeni 41 pacijent sa 49 biopsija (15 od rekurirajuće bolesti) iz tri bolnice. 8 pacijenata je imalo ili istovremeni ili metakroni karcinom. p53 imunoreakcija je dokazana u većini karcinoma, no u samo dva papiloma, dok je jača imunoreakcija Ki67dokazana u karcinomima i okolnom promijenjenom epitelu. Zaključili smo da imunohistokemijsko bojanje invertnih papiloma sinusa na p53 i Ki67 mogu pružiti korisne informacije glede prisutnosti istovremenog karcinoma.

The function of periosteum presents an important clinical and sciencitific interest in the process of bone healing. Today, we know much more about phy siological, histological and biochemical process that happen in the fractured tissue. Our aims were: to quantify microcirculation of the intact periosteum ; to quantify the microcirculation of the periosteum after osteosynthesis with plates and screws ; to use our result for the construction of the new plate, with decreased damage to periosteum. In our investigatiog we used sheep. The plate was implanted on sheep tibia, supraperiostaly on the intact bone. Contralateral leg was used as the control group (without plates). Our results show that periostal circulation seems to be very sensitive to compression caused by plate implantation (number of capillares in damaged tissue is almost double less than in normal, 43%, what is statistically significant).

Mal de Meleda is a hereditary palmoplantar keratoderma which was named after Mljet Island (previously called Meleda) in Adriatic sea, Croatia. First cases originated on this island between 1397 and 1908, during which time the island was used for quaranting people from town of Dubrovnik suffering from plague and leprosy. Such a setting, characterized by reproductive isolation and high inbreding even nowadays, favor homozygosity and thus increased incidence of conditions (such as Mal de Meleda) which show an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. The aim of this study was to fully characterise all 12 living cases originating from the island. Six field investigations (1998-1999) identified 12 patients and 37 family members who were interviewed and examined. The eight reconstructed genealogies implied a common ancestry of all cases but one. Previously reported obligate and facultative symptoms were confirmed in the majority of cases. The symptoms in these cases were milder when retinoids (etretinat or acitretin) were applied together with continuous symptomatic topical treatment.

The present study investigated both the healing rate (after four weeks) and relapse rate (during six months) following treatment with the dopamine- like drugs bromocriptine (2.5 mg twice daily), amantadine (100 mg nocte), or with H2 blockers cimetidine (800 mg nocte), and famotidine (40 mg nocte) in 124 patients with endoscopically proven duodenal ulcer (DU). The ulcer was completly healed in 27 (amatidine), 26 (bromosriptine), 23 (cimetidine), and 24 (famotidine) patients. Relapse was noted 34.7 % (cimetidine) and 25 % (famotidine) versus 11.7 % (amatidine) and 7.7 % (bromocriptine) DU patients. No significant difference was found in initial healing rates. However, the relapse rate in the cimetidine- treated group was significantly higher than in all the other test groups. Additional comparisons between all the treatment categories showed a signifcantly lower relaps rate with the dopamine- like agents. These important new results indicate that dopamine- like compounds are equally effective as H2 blockers in inducing DU healing and may offer a promising advantage over H2 blockers concerning their efficacy in preventing ulcer relapse in DU patients.

An 18-year-old girl was referred to the Department of Oral Medicine with upper lip swelling. She was in good general health and laboratory tests were within the normal range. Histopathologic diagnosis did not reveal the presence of granulomas. This is consistent with the finding that 30% of patients with orofacial granulomatosis do not have granulomas on their biopsies. The patient was treated with intralesional steroids once a week for three weeks. The lesion subsided, but not completely, and recurred partially after ketchup intake. This case report highlights the fact that in every patient with non-odontogenic facial or oral swelling, systemic diseases such as sarcoidosis, Crohn’s disease, tuberculosis, etc. must be excluded. Furthermore, it is not unusual that in patients with orofacial granulomatosis, noncaseating granulomas are absent in the histopathologic finding.

Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is especially intriguing for its growing prevalence. We discussed about prevention and therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett s esophagus and endoscopic and histologic follow-up.
