Objective Patients in whom coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was suspected or confirmed between January 1, 2020, and October 31, 2021, were enrolled from Japanese hospitals in this multicenter, retrospective, observational study. Methods Data on the treatment administered (including conventional and Kampo medicine) and changes in common cold-like symptoms (such as fever, cough, sputum, dyspnea, fatigue, and diarrhea) were collected from their medical records. The primary outcome was the number of days without a fever (with a body temperature37 °C). The secondary outcomes were symptomatic relief and the worsening of illness, defined as the presence of a condition requiring oxygen inhalation. The outcomes of patients treated with and without Kampo medicine were compared. Patients We enrolled 962 patients, among whom 528 received conventional and Kampo treatment (Kampo group) and 434 received conventional treatment (non-Kampo group). Results Overall, after adjusting for the staging of COVID-19 and risk factors, there were no significant between-group differences in the symptoms or number of days being afebrile. After performing propensity score matching and restricting the included cases to those with confirmed COVID-19 who did not receive steroid administration and initiated treatment within 4 days from the onset, the risk of illness worsening was significantly lower in the Kampo group than in the non-Kampo group (odds ratio=0.113, 95% confidence interval: 0.014-0.928, p=0.0424). Conclusion Early Kampo treatment may suppress illness worsening risk in COVID-19 cases without steroid use. Further randomized controlled studies are needed to confirm the clinical benefit of Kampo medicine for COVID-19.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a threat to patient health. However, data to optimize antimicrobial use are limited. Furthermore, reducing antibiotic use raises concerns regarding patient safety. The effectiveness of antibiotics in reducing the prevalence of AMR is controversial. Researchers at the Japanese Red Cross Ishinomaki Hospital (JRCIH), the only tertiary care hospital in the medical zone, along with local medical and pharmacy associations and public health centers have been leading the AMR control program since 2018. The program involves lectures aimed at optimizing antimicrobial use, regular publication of surveillance data of drug-resistant strains at the JRCIH, and presentation of first-line treatments for community-acquired infections. The delivery of oral antimicrobial agents across the region in 2020 was 28.7% lower than that in 2013, with delivery of cephalosporins, quinolones, and macrolides decreasing by 34.8%, 46.8%, and 56.0%, respectively. Despite these reductions, there has been no associated increase in the number of patients with severe infectious diseases admitted to the JRCIH. The rates of representative drug-resistant bacterial strains, such as extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, decreased by half. Herein, we demonstrated the potential of collaborative efforts to optimize antimicrobial agent use and reduce the AMR prevalence without compromising patient safety.

Purpose:The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, the major process by which some cancer cells convert from an epithelial phenotype to a mesenchymal one, has been suggested to drive chemo-resistance and/or metastasis in patients with cancer. However, only a few studies have demonstrated the presence of CD45/CD326 doubly-positive cells (CD45/CD326 DPC) in cancer. We deployed a combination of cell surface markers to elucidate the phenotypic heterogeneity in non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells and identified a new subpopulation that is doubly-positive for epithelial and non–epithelial cell-surface markers in both NSCLC cells and patients' malignant pleural effusions.Experimental Design:We procured a total of 39 patients' samples, solid fresh lung cancer tissues from 21 patients and malignant pleural effusion samples from 18 others, and used FACS and fluorescence microscopy to check their surface markers. We also examined the EGFR mutations in patients with known acquired EGFR mutations.Results:Our data revealed that 0.4% to 17.9% of the solid tumor tissue cells and a higher percentage of malignant pleural effusion cells harbored CD45/CD326 DPC expressing both epithelial and nonepithelial surface markers. We selected 3 EGFR mutation patients and genetically confirmed that the newly identified cell population really originated from cancer cells. We also found that higher proportions of CD45/CD326 DPC are significantly associated with poor prognosis.Conclusions:In conclusion, varying percentages of CD45/CD326 DPC exist in both solid cancer tissue and malignant pleural effusion in patients with NSCLC. This CD45/CD326 doubly-positive subpopulation can be an important key to clinical management of patients with NSCLC.

In all-solid-state batteries (ASSB), increasing the thickness of electrodes is essential for increasing the energy density. However, this limits the C-rate performance, particularly for electrodes with a large volume fraction of active materials (AMs), transport of ions in the electrode is hindered, leading to poor utilization of AMs in ASSBs. To accelerate the development of ASSBs, it is highly desirable to develop analytical methods for understanding the utilization of AMs in thick electrodes. In this paper, we propose a novel impedance analysis method using the transmission line model (TLM) for estimating the utilization of AMs in an electrode in terms of effective electrode thickness. In the TLM model, electrode thickness is treated as a variable instead of a fixed parameter in the conventional sequence. Hence, the modified C-rate performance considering the TLM-calculated thickness exhibits an identical trend regardless of the actual electrode thickness, suggesting the calculated electrode thickness reflects the effective electrode thickness. This indicates effective utilization of AMs for electrochemical reactions. We also demonstrate the versatility of this method by using different electrode specifications.

The mechanism for dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) after acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is thought to be apical infarction with compensatory hyperkinesia of the residual normally perfused basal segments of the myocardium. However, herein, we report a patient with ACS and dynamic LVOTO (peak gradient of 250 mm Hg at rest) that could not be secondary to apical akinesia. We propose a potential alternative mechanism leading to dynamic LVOTO in ACS, namely, the interplay between sigmoid septum, basal hyperkinesis, and outflow tract narrowing induced by afterload reduction due to acute myocardial ischemia itself.

Purpose Asthma-COPD overlap (ACO) has been reported as an association with a lower quality of life, frequent exacerbations, and higher mortality than those with COPD alone. However, clinical characteristics and outcomes of ACO remain controversial. Patients and Methods We conducted a prospective observational study analyzing data of patients with stable COPD enrolled from the Ishinomaki COPD Network Registry. Patients with features of asthma who had a history of respiratory symptoms that vary over time and intensity, together with documented variable expiratory airflow limitation, were identified, and then defined as having ACO. The characteristics, frequency of exacerbations, and mortality during the 3-year follow-up were compared between patients with ACO and patients with COPD alone. Results Among 387 patients with COPD, 41 (10.6%) were identified as having ACO. Patients with ACO tended to be younger, have higher BMI, have a shorter smoking history, and use more respiratory medications, especially inhaled corticosteroids. Inflammatory biomarkers including fractional exhaled nitric oxide, blood eosinophil count, total immunoglobulin E (IgE) level, and presence of antigen-specific IgE were significantly higher in patients with ACO than in those with COPD alone. Lung function, mMRC score, CAT score, and comorbidity index were not different between the groups. The annual rate of all exacerbations and severe exacerbations required hospital admission were not different between ACO and COPD alone (0.20 vs 0.14, 0.12 vs 0.10, events per person, respectively). Mortality was significantly higher in patients with COPD alone compared with those with ACO during the study period (P=0.037). Conclusion The results of our study indicate that ACO is not associated with poor clinical features nor outcomes in an outpatient COPD cohort receiving appropriate treatment.

Objective: We investigated the prevalence of asthma, rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis in children, evaluated the mite allergen levels in their bedding after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and assessed changes in allergic symptoms in children and their families after allergen avoidance practices. Methods: We performed a survey for the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) comprising 1109 children, aged 7–8 years, living in Ishinomaki, Japan. We collected responses from 464 children, and in 2016, measured the level of Dermatophagoides group 1 (Der 1) in the bedding of 202 of these children. The intervention group of children attended at least one allergen avoidance seminar. The levels of Der 1 in their bedding were measured, along with changes in allergic symptoms, in 17 children in 2017 and 14 children in 2018. The nonintervention group comprised children who did not attend an allergen avoidance seminar at any time. Results: Of the 464 children who participated in the ISAAC, 50 (10.8%) reported having asthma, 179 (38.8%) allergic rhinitis, and 126 (27.3%) atopic dermatitis. The average level of Der 1 measured in the bedding of the 202 children in 2016 was 295.8 ng/m2. The levels of Der 1 in the intervention group—but not in the nonintervention group—significantly decreased in 2017 and 2018. The symptoms of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis in the children of intervention group and their families decreased after allergen avoidance practices. Conclusions: Allergen avoidance practices relieved allergic symptoms in school children after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Smoking-related interstitial lung abnormalities are different from specific forms of fibrosing lung disease which might be associated with poor prognoses. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with comorbid interstitial lung abnormalities and that with pulmonary fibrosis are considered different diseases; however, they could share a common spectrum. We aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics of Japanese patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and comorbid interstitial lung abnormalities. In this prospective observational study, we analyzed data from the Ishinomaki COPD Network Registry. We evaluated the clinical characteristics of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with and without comorbid interstitial lung abnormalities by comparing the annualized rate of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations per patient during the observational period. Among 463 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, 30 (6.5%) developed new interstitial lung abnormalities during the observational period. After 1-to-3 propensity score matching, we found that the annualized rate of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations per patient during the observational period was 0.06 and 0.23 per year in the interstitial lung abnormality and control groups, respectively (P = 0.043). Our findings indicate slow progression of interstitial lung abnormality lesions in patients with pre-existing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Further, interstitial lung abnormality development did not significantly influence on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation. We speculate that post-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease interstitial lung abnormalities might involve smoking-related interstitial fibrosis, which is different from specific forms of fibrosing lung disease associated with poor prognoses.

The fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is recognized as a biomarker of type 2 inflammation in asthma, which is related to airway eosinophilia. We conducted a prospective observational study in a cohort of Japanese patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to evaluate the relationship between FeNO and clinical features and patient outcomes over a 3-year period. Participants were categorized into two groups based on FeNO levels (high and low), and the clinical features and outcomes were compared between the groups. Patients with high FeNO levels showed features of asthma and eosinophilic inflammation compared to those with low levels. However, high FeNO levels were not associated with worse outcomes (exacerbations, hospital admissions, all-cause and disease-specific mortality) compared to low levels. These results provide evidence that baseline FeNO is related to eosinophilic inflammation; however, is not a predictor of future exacerbations or prognosis in patients with stable COPD.

Introduction: We previously reported an increased prevalence of asthma in adults who lived in temporary housing after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The goal of the current study was to investigate changes in asthma prevalence and mite-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) titers in temporary housing residents during 2014–2019. Methods: By using the Global Initiative for Asthma guidelines, we diagnosed asthma in Ishinomaki city temporary housing residents aged 15 years or older. We then analyzed serum antigen-specific IgE levels to Dermatophagoides farinae (Der f), Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p), and Aspergillus fumigatus. Results: The prevalence of asthma exceeded 20% across all age-groups throughout the study period. The proportion of study participants with a “positive” antigen-specific IgE titer (i.e., ≥0.35 IUA/mL) was higher in asthmatics than in nonasthmatics for Der f and Der p but not for Aspergillus fumigatus. Among residents ≥50 years old who were diagnosed with asthma, the percentage with a Der f-specific IgE titer ≥0.10 IUA/mL was higher than the proportion with ≥0.35 IUA/mL. Among study participants, asthma onset occurred before the earthquake, during residence in shelters or temporary housing, and (starting in 2016) after moving out of temporary housing. The Der p-specific IgE level was positively correlated with the duration of temporary housing (p < 0.05, r = 0.41) and inversely correlated with the time elapsed since moving out of temporary housing (p < 0.05, r = −0.35). Conclusion: Mite allergen sensitization was found in both asthmatic and nonasthmatic temporary housing residents after the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami; asthma developed even after subjects moved out of temporary housing.

Aspiration pneumonia is the common cause of death in the elderly that is associated with decreases in both swallowing and cough reflexes. Basal ganglia infarctions predispose these patients to develop pneumonia due to silent aspiration during sleep. Both reflexes are mediated by endogenous substance P released from vagal sensory nerves. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors suppress degradation of substance P and improve both swallowing and cough reflexes. ACE inhibitors can reduce the risk of aspiration pneumonia in selected patients with stroke, particularly in Asian patients. Cilostazol, an antiplatelet agent, is reported to reduce pneumonia in patients with a history of stroke. Banxia Houpo Tang (BHT, Hange-koboku-to in Japanese), a Chinese herbal (Kampo) medicine, can improve the swallowing and cough reflex in the elderly with a history of pneumonia and have beneficial effects on prevention of pneumonia. Antipsychotics can cause impairment of swallowing reflex due to dopamine blocking activity; therefore, antipsychotics should be avoided in elderly patients. We propose to consider pharmacological approach based on substance P theory to the proper subjects.

Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of an early detection program for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a primary care setting in Japan. Methods Participants of ≥40 years of age who regularly visited a general practitioner's clinic due to chronic disease were asked to complete a COPD screening questionnaire (COPD Population Screener; COPD-PS) and undergo simplified spirometry using a handheld spirometric device. Patients who showed possible COPD were referred to a respiratory specialist and underwent a detailed examination that included spirometry and chest radiography. Results A total of 111 patients with possible COPD were referred for close examination. Among these patients, 27 patients were newly diagnosed with COPD. The patients with COPD were older, had lower BMI values, and had a longer smoking history in comparison to non-COPD patients. COPD patients also had more comorbid conditions. Rationale Cellular senescence is observed in the lungs of patients with COPD and may contribute to the disease pathogenesis. Growth differentiation factor 11 (GDF11) belongs to the transforming growth factor β superfamily and was recently reported to be a circulating protein that may have rejuvenating effects in mice. We aimed to investigate the amounts of GDF11 in the plasma and the lungs of patients with COPD and elucidate the possible roles of GDF11 in cellular senescence. Methods The plasma levels of GDF11 were investigated in two separate cohorts by western blotting. The localisation and expression of GDF11 in the lungs were investigated by immunohistochemistry and quantitative reverse transcription PCR, respectively. The effects of GDF11 on both cigarette smoke extract (CSE)-induced cellular senescence in vitro and on elastase-induced cellular senescence in vivo were investigated. Results The levels of plasma GDF11 in the COPD group were decreased compared with the control groups in the two independent cohorts. The levels of plasma GDF11 were significantly positively correlated with pulmonary function data. The mRNA expression of GDF11 in mesenchymal cells from the COPD group was decreased. Chronic exposure to CSE decreased the production of GDF11. Treatment with GDF11 significantly inhibited CSE-induced cellular senescence and upregulation of inflammatory mediators, partly through Smad2/3 signalling in vitro. Daily GDF11 treatment attenuated cellular senescence and airspace enlargement in an elastase-induced mouse model of emphysema. Conclusions The decrease in GDF11 may be involved in the cellular senescence observed in COPD.

Liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) can be useful to improve in vitro fertilization (IVF). This study aims to find out an association between embryonic growth and embryonic uptake of free fatty acid (FFA) from culture media by using LC-HRMS.Embryos (n=55) from 15 couples undergoing IVF were studied. An embryo was cultivated for up to 6 days in a 20 μl-medium drop under mineral oil, and classified by a morphological grading system into the good-growth group (n=32; good quality blastocysts) and the poor-growth group (n=23; non-blastocysts). The control study was set up without embryo. Extracted ion chromatogram of FFAs was collected in negative-ion mode for each medium sample obtained after use.The percent change from control to sample in mass area for docosahexaenoic acid showed a decrease in the good-growth group than that in the poor-growth group (p0.05). Decrease in %change of docosahexaenoic acid might indicate proper embryonic growth. Similar but insignificant change was observed for other essential FFAs, but not for non-essential FFAs.The proposed metabolomic approach using LC-HRMS might be a powerful tool for non-invasive evaluation of embryonic growth.

He experienced the first episode of chest tightness, coughing, and wheezing in February 2012, when he again was diagnosed as having bronchial asthma. Mycofloral surveillance detected high counts ofEurotiumin the air of his bedroom, kitchen, and living room, with a maximal fungal count of 163,200 colony-forming units per cubic meter (CFU/m3). AlthoughCladosporiumandPenicilliumtypically predominate in the indoor air of residential dwellings, only low levels of these organisms were present in the patient’s home. Morphologic identification confirmed the isolates asE. herbariorum. The patient had positive reactions toE. herbariorumin skin prick testing and the presence of antigen-specific precipitating antibodies toE. herbariorum. Computed tomography of the chest in August 2013 revealed central bronchiectasis and bronchial wall thickening. It is unknown whether disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis affect asthma development or exacerbation in adults. Here, we investigated whether asthma prevalence increased in those aged ≥15 years living in temporary housing after the Great East Japan Earthquake. We diagnosed asthma according to GINA guidelines in residents aged ≥15 years who were living, or had lived, in temporary housing in the city of Ishinomaki. We analyzed serum antigen-specific anti-immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody levels to Dermatophagoides farinae (Der f), Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus glaucus, Aspergillus amstelodami, and Aspergillus restrictus. The GOLD 2017 proposes a new classification whereby patients are grouped as A–D according to their symptoms and history of exacerbations. However, the clinical characteristics and outcomes in these patients are not well documented.Patients and methods: In this prospective observational study, we analyzed data from the Ishinomaki COPD Network Registry. All patients with stable COPD were classified into the four groups defined by GOLD 2017. The patient demographics, clinical characteristics, number of exacerbations, and mortality rate during 1 year of follow-up were compared between the groups.Results: Four hundred and one patients with stable COPD were identified. There were 240 patients (59.9%) in group A, 122 (30.4%) in group B, 16 (4.0%) in group C, and 23 (5.7%) in group D. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is a chronic lung disease characterized by airflow limitation, has become a major global public health problem. Natural disasters have a negative impact on the clinical outcomes of patients with COPD in the affected area. Hospital admissions for COPD exacerbations increase after a disaster and continue to increase for up to a month after the disaster. Due to power outages and equipment damage, patients with severe COPD receiving oxygen therapy have to find refuge in hospitals. Exposure to air pollution, including particulate matter and biological materials from the destruction of buildings and tsunami sludge, may contribute to the worsening of respiratory symptoms in patients with COPD. In the aftermath of a disaster, patients may lose their prescribed drugs and oxygen supplies or may be unable to access medical services, resulting in an increase in exacerbations. Patients may be exposed to cold temperatures in damaged houses or emergency shelters with insufficient fuel supplies and power failure and experience shortages of water, food, and sanitary goods, which may lead to poor personal hygiene. An outbreak of acute respiratory infections becomes a major concern. The unfavorable conditions are likely to result in the increased occurrence of exacerbations. Disaster preparedness for COPD patients should be considered before it becomes an emergency.

Background Even with the use of a reduced energy setting (20–25W), excessive transmural injury (ETI) following catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) is reported to develop in 10% of patients. However, the incidence of ETI depends on the pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) method and its esophageal temperature monitor setting. Data comparing the incidence of ETI following AF ablation with and without esophageal temperature monitoring (ETM) are still lacking. Methods This study was comprised of 160 patients with AF (54% paroxysmal, mean: 24.0±2.9kg/m 2 ). Eighty patients underwent ablation accompanied by ETM. The primary endpoint was defined as the occurrence of ETI assessed by endoscopy within 5d after the AF ablation. The secondary endpoint was defined as AF recurrence after a single procedure. If the esophageal temperature probe registered >39°C, the radiofrequency (RF) application was stopped immediately. RF applications could be performed in a point-by-point manner for a maximum of 20s and 20W. ETI was defined as any injury that resulted from AF ablation, including esophageal injury or periesophageal nerve injury (peri-ENI). Results The incidence of esophageal injury was significantly lower in patients whose AF ablation included ETM compared with patients without ETM (0 [0%] vs. 6 [7.5%], p =0.028), but not the incidence of peri-ENI (2 [2.5%] vs. 3 [3.8%], p =1.0). AF recurrence 12 months after the procedure was similar between the groups (20 [25%] in the ETM group vs. 19 [24%] in the non-ETM group, p =1.00). Conclusions Catheter ablation using ETM may reduce the incidence of esophageal injury without increasing the incidence of AF recurrence but not the incidence of peri-ENI.

Background: The radiofrequency (RF) lesions for atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation can be visualized by delayed enhancement magnetic resonance imaging (DE-MRI). However, the quality of anatomical information provided by DE-MRI is not adequate due to its spatial resolution. In contrast, magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) provides similar information regarding the left atrium (LA) and pulmonary veins (PVs) as computed tomography angiography. We hypothesized that DE-MRI fused with MRA will compensate for the inadequate image quality provided by DE-MRI. Methods: DE-MRI and MRA were performed in 18 patients who underwent AF ablation (age, 60±9 years; LA diameter, 42±6 mm). Two observers independently assessed the DE-MRI and DE-MRI fused with MRA for visualization of the RF lesion (score 0–2; where 0: not visualized and 2: excellent in all 14 segments of the circular RF lesion). Results: DE-MRI fused with MRA was successfully performed in all patients. Background: Esophageal injury following catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) is reported to occur in 35% of patients. Even with a low energy setting (20–25 W), lesions develop in 10% of patients. Body mass index (BMI) has been reported to be a predictor of esophageal injury, indicating that patients with a low BMI (39 °C, radiofrequency (RF) application was stopped immediately. RF application could be performed in a “point by point” manner for a maximum of 20 s. Endoscopy was performed 1–5 days after ablation. Results: Esophageal mucosal injury was not observed in any patient in the study. Conclusions: Catheter ablation using ETM reduced the incidence of esophageal injuries, even in patients with a low BMI.

BACKGROUND The incidence of hematoma formation following implantation of a cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) is estimated to be 5% even if a pressure dressing is applied. It is unclear whether a pressure dressing can really compress the pocket in different positions. Furthermore, the adhesive tape for fixing pressure dressings can tear the skin. We developed a new compression tool for preventing hematomas and skin erosions. METHODS AND RESULTS We divided 46 consecutive patients receiving anticoagulation therapy who underwent CIED implantation into 2 groups (Group I: conventional pressure dressing, Group II: new compression tool). The pressure on the pocket was measured in both the supine and standing positions. The incidence of hematomas was compared between the 2 groups. The pressure differed between the supine and standing positions in Group I, but not in Group II (Group I: 14.8±7.1 mmHg vs. 11.3±9.9 mmHg, P=0.013; Group II: 13.5±2.8 mmHg vs. 13.5±3.5 mmHg, P=0.99). The incidence of hematomas and skin erosions was documented in 2 (8.7%) and 3 (13%) Group I patients, respectively. No complications were documented in Group II. CONCLUSIONS The new compression tool can provide adequate continuous pressure on the pocket, regardless of body position. This device may reduce the incidence of hematomas and skin erosions after CIED implantation.

Three-dimensional gel electrophoresis (3-DE), which combines agarose gel electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing/SDS-PAGE, was developed to characterize monoclonal proteins (M-proteins). However, the original 3-DE method has not been optimized and its specificity has not been demonstrated. The main goal of this study was to optimize the 3-DE procedure and then compare it with 2-DE. We developed a highly sensitive 3-DE method in which M-proteins are extracted from a first-dimension agarose gel, by diffusing into 150 mM NaCl, and the recovery of M-proteins was 90.6%. To validate the utility of the highly sensitive 3-DE, we compared it with the original 3-DE method. We found that highly sensitive 3-DE provided for greater M-protein recovery and was more effective in terms of detecting spots on SDS-PAGE gels than the original 3-DE. Moreover, highly sensitive 3-DE separates residual normal IgG from M-proteins, which could not be done by 2-DE. Applying the highly sensitive 3-DE to clinical samples, we found that the characteristics of M-proteins vary tremendously between individuals. We believe that our highly sensitive 3-DE method described here will prove useful in further studies of the heterogeneity of M-proteins.
