The spherically bent crystal analyzer (SBCA) is a widely-adopted hard x-ray optic, renowned for its good energy resolution and large collection solid angle. It is frequently employed in synchrotron-based techniques like Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) and X-ray Emission Spectroscopy, as well as in the rebirth of laboratory-based X-ray Absorption Fine Strucure (XAFS) and XES, and its predominant use has been in 'symmetric' operation on the Rowland circle. The recent study of Gironda et al. (J. Anal. At. Spectrom., 2024, 39, 1375) emphasizes the benefits of 'asymmetric' SBCA operation, demonstrating the use of multiple crystal reflections from a single SBCA to broaden its accessible energy range. Furthermore, Gironda et al. demonstrate that asymmetric operation frequently mitigates energy broadening intrinsic to Johann optics and propose that under a specific Rowland circle configuration, designated here the Johann Normal Alignment (JNA), such broadening is eradicated altogether. We report extensive ray tracing simulations to scrutinize the impact of asymmetric configurations on energy broadening and detector plane defocusing. We find that the performance of asymmetric SBCA operation generally exceeds its symmetric counterpart in energy resolution when no analyzer masking is used and, with strategic detector placement, the decrease in detection efficiency due to defocusing can be minimized. Spectroscopic imaging is adversely affected by the detector plane blurring, but rejection of scattering from special environment windows in x-ray Raman imaging is still feasible. These results help inform future, more common implementation of asymmetric reflections with SBCA.

High resolution, hard x-ray spectroscopy at synchrotron x-ray light sources commonly uses spherically bent crystal analyzers (SBCAs) formed by shaping a single crystal wafer to a spherical backing. These Rowland circle optics are almost always used in a 'symmetric' (or nearly symmetric) configuration wherein the reciprocal lattice vector used for energy selectivity via diffraction is coincident with the normal vector to the curved wafer surface. However, Gironda, et al., recently proposed that asymmetric operation of SBCA, wherein the reciprocal lattice vector is no longer normal to the wafer surface, has significant operational benefits and has been an underutilized opportunity. First, those authors find improved energy resolution through decreased Johann error, or equivalently find increased solid angle at a chosen experimental tolerance for energy broadening. Second, they find productive, high-resolution use of a large number of reciprocal lattice vectors from a single SBCA, thus enabling operation over a wide energy range without need to exchange SBCA upon making large changes in desired photon energy. These observations hold the potential to improve performance, increase flexibility and decrease cost for both laboratory and synchrotron applications. Given these motivations, we report an open-source software package, hklhop, that enables exploration of the complex space of analyzer wafer choice, experimental energy range or ranges, and desired suppression of Johann error. This package can guide both the design and the day-to-day operations of Rowland spectrometers enabled for asymmetric use.

Recent advances using Density Functional Theory (DFT) to augment Multiplet Ligand Field Theory (MLFT) have led to ab-initio calculations of many formerly empirical parameters. This development makes MLFT more predictive instead of interpretive, thus improving its value for understanding highly correlated 3d, 4d, and f-electron systems. Here, we explore a DFT + MLFT based approach for core-to-core K{\alpha} x-ray emission spectra (XES) and evaluate its performance for a range of transition metal systems. We find good agreement between theory and experiment, as well as the ability to capture key spectral trends related to spin and oxidation state. We also discuss limitations of the model in the context of the remaining free parameters and suggest directions forward.

Li-ion battery (LIB) research has continuing importance for the entire range of applications from consumer products to vehicle electrification and grid stabilization. In many cases, standard electrochemical methods only provide an overall voltage or specific capacity, giving an inadequate description of parallel redox processes or chemical gradients at the particle and pack level. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) is frequently used to augment bulk electrochemical data, as it provides element-specific changes in oxidation state and local atomic structure. Such microscopic descriptors are crucial for elucidating charge transfer and structural changes associated with bonding or site mixing, two key factors in evaluating state of charge and modes of cell failure. However, the impact of XAFS on LIB research has been significantly constrained by a logistical barrier: contemporary XAFS work is performed almost exclusively at synchrotron x-ray light sources, where beamtime is infrequent and experiment time-frames are limited. Here we show that modern laboratory based XAFS can not only be applied to, e.g., characterization of ex situ LIB electrode materials, but can also be used for operando studies at industrially-relevant charging rates in a standard pouch cell preparation. Such capability enables accelerated discovery of new materials and improved operation modes for LIBs.

We demonstrate that vacuum forming of 10-cm diameter silicon wafers of various crystallographic orientations under an x-ray permeable, flexible window can easily generate spherically bent crystal analyzers (SBCA) and toroidally bent crystal analyzers (TBCA) with ~1-eV energy resolution and a 1-m major radius of curvature. In applications at synchrotron light sources, x-ray free electron lasers, and laboratory spectrometers these characteristics are generally sufficient for many x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) applications in the chemical sciences. Unlike existing optics manufacturing methods using epoxy or anodic bonding, vacuum forming without adhesive is temporary in the sense that the bent wafer can be removed when vacuum is released and exchanged for a different orientation wafer. Therefore, the combination of an x-ray compatible vacuum-forming chamber, a library of thin wafers, and a small number of forms having different secondary curvatures can give extreme flexibility in spectrometer energy range. As proof of this method we determine the energy resolution and reflectivity for several such vacuum-formed bent crystal analyzers (VF-BCA) in laboratory based XAFS and XES studies using a conventional x-ray tube. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) are advanced x-ray spectroscopies that impact a wide range of disciplines. However, unlike the majority of other spectroscopic methods, XAFS and XES are accompanied by an unusual access model, wherein; the dominant use of the technique is for premier research studies at world-class facilities, i.e., synchrotron x-ray light sources. In this paper we report the design and performance of an improved spectrometer XAFS and XES based on the general conceptual design of Seidler, et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 2014. New developments include reduced mechanical degrees of freedom, much-increased flux, and a wider Bragg angle range to enable extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) for the first time with this type of modern laboratory XAFS configuration. This instrument enables a new class of routine applications that are incompatible with the mission and access model of the synchrotron light sources. To illustrate this, we provide numerous examples of x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), EXAFS, and XES results for a variety of problems and energy ranges. Highlights include XAFS and XES measurements of battery electrode materials, EXAFS of Ni and V with full modeling of results to validate monochromator performance, valence-to-core XES for 3d transition metal compounds, and uranium XANES and XES for different oxidation states. Taken en masse, these results further support the growing perspective that modern laboratory-based XAFS and XES have the potential to develop a new branch of analytical chemistry.

We report measurements of the nonresonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) from Ni metal in an energy range spanning the K_beta, valence-to-core, and double-ionization (DI) satellites that appear beyond the single-particle Fermi level. We make special use of a laboratory-based x-ray spectrometer capable of both x-ray emission and x-ray absorption measurements to accurately align the XES and x-ray absorption spectra to a common energy scale. The careful alignment of energy scales is requisite for correction of the strong sample absorption of DI fluorescence above the Ni K-edge energy. The successful correction of absorption effects allows a determination of the branching ratios for the [1s3d], [1s3p], [1s2p] and [1s2s] satellites with respect to their corresponding diagram lines. We compare our results with other work, finding good agreement with prior experiments and with theoretical calculations in the multi-configuration Dirac-Fock framework.

X-ray emission spectroscopy is emerging as an important complement to x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, providing a characterization of the occupied electronic density of states local to the species of interest. Here, we present details of the design and performance of a compact x-ray emission spectrometer that uses a dispersive refocusing Rowland (DRR) circle geometry to achieve excellent performance for the 2 - 2.5 keV energy range. The DRR approach allows high energy resolution even for unfocused x-ray sources. This property enables high count rates in laboratory studies, comparable to those of insertion-device beamlines at third-generation synchrotrons, despite use of only a low-powered, conventional x-ray tube. The spectrometer, whose overall scale is set by use of a 10-cm diameter Rowland circle and a new small-pixel CMOS x-ray camera, is easily portable to synchrotron or x-ray free electron beamlines. Photometrics from measurements at the Advanced Light Source show somewhat higher overall instrumental efficiency than prior systems based on less tightly curved analyzer optics. In addition, the compact size of this instrument lends itself to future multiplexing to gain large factors in net collection efficiency, or its implementation in controlled gas gloveboxes either in the lab or in an endstation., Comment: Submitted, Review of Scientific Instruments

The extremely high power densities and short durations of single pulses of x-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) have opened new opportunities in atomic physics, where complex excitation-relaxation chains allow for high ionization states in atomic and molecular systems, and in dense plasma physics, where XFEL heating of solid-density targets can create unique dense states of matter having temperatures on the order of the Fermi energy. We focus here on the latter phenomena, with special emphasis on the problem of optimum target design to achieve high x-ray heating into the warm dense matter (WDM) state. We report fully three-dimensional simulations of the incident x-ray pulse and the resulting multielectron relaxation cascade to model the spatial energy density deposition in multicomponent targets, with particular focus on the effects of nonlocal heat transport due to the motion of high energy photoelectrons and Auger electrons. We find that nanoscale high-Z/low-Z multicomponent targets can give much improved energy density deposition in lower-Z materials, with enhancements reaching a factor of 100. This has three important benefits. First, it greatly enlarges the thermodynamic parameter space in XFEL x-ray heating studies of lower-Z materials. Second, it allows the use of higher probe photon energies, enabling higher-information content X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements such as in two-color XFEL operations. Third, while this is merely one step toward optimization of x-ray heating target design, the demonstration of the importance of nonlocal heat transport establishes important common ground between XFEL-based x-ray heating studies and more traditional laser plasma methods.

Recently developed instrumentation at the University of Washington has allowed for nonresonant x-ray emission spectra (XES) to be measured in a laboratory-setting with an inexpensive, easily operated system. We present a critical evaluation of this equipment by means of K\b{eta} and valence-level XES measurements for several Co compounds. We find peak count rates of ~5000/s for concentrated samples and a robust relative energy scale with reproducibility of 25 meV or better. We furthermore find excellent agreement with synchrotron measurements with only modest loss in energy resolution. Instruments such as ours, based on only conventional sources that are widely sold for elemental analysis by x-ray fluorescence, can fill an important role to diversify the research applications of XES both by their presence in non-synchrotron laboratories and by their use in conjunction with XAFS beamlines where the complementarity of XAFS and XES holds high scientific potential., Comment: Conference proceeding, XAFS16, Karlsruhe Germany

We have recently demonstrated a very favorable, inexpensive modernization of lab-based x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and high-resolution x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) using only commercially-available optics and x-ray tube sources. Here, we survey several proven instrument designs that can be readily implemented in any laboratory setting to achieve synchrotron-quality XAFS and XES for many systems in the 5 keV to 10 keV energy range. These approaches are based on our immediate experience with the development of: (1) an inexpensive, low-powered monochromator capable of performing either XAFS or XES, (2) a mid-scale XAFS user facility having 10^6/sec flux with sub-eV bandwidth on each of two independent beamlines, and (3) multiple XES spectrometers having 3rd-generation synchrotron performance for battery and actinide research., Comment: Conference proceeding, XAFS16, Karlsruhe Germany

Photosynthetic water oxidation is a fundamental process that sustains the biosphere. A Mn$_{4}$Ca cluster embedded in the photosystem II protein environment is responsible for the production of atmospheric oxygen. Here, time-resolved x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) was used to observe the process of oxygen formation in real time. These experiments reveal that the oxygen evolution step, initiated by three sequential laser flashes, is accompanied by rapid (within 50 $\mu$s) changes to the Mn K$\beta$ XES spectrum. However, no oxidation of the Mn$_{4}$Ca core above the all Mn$^{\text{IV}}$ state was detected to precede O-O bond formation. A new mechanism featuring Mn$^{\text{IV}}$=O formation in the S$_{3}$ state is proposed to explain the spectroscopic results. This chemical formulation is consistent with the unique reactivity of the S$_{3}$ state and explains facilitation of the following S$_{3}$ to S$_{0}$ transition, resolving in part the kinetic limitations associated with O-O bond formation. In the proposed mechanism, O-O bond formation precedes transfer of the final (4$^{\text{th}}$) electron from the Mn$_{4}$Ca cluster, in agreement with experiment., Comment: 49 pages, includes main text (pgs. 1-16) and supplementary material (pgs. 17-49), 13 figures (4 main text, and 9 supplementary), 12 tables (2 main text, 10 supplementary)

We report ab initio calculations of the valence electron momentum distribution function n(p) and dynamic structure factor for warm dense Be at Mbar pressures. We observe an unexpected, strong reshaping of the Compton profile upon increasing density, even well before any significant core-wavefunction overlap or electride behavior occurs. We propose that this nonperturbative effect, which is due to a growing influence on n(p) of the orthogonalization of valence and core electron wave- functions with increasing density, is observable by inelastic x-ray scattering at x-ray free-electron lasers and large-scale laser-shock heating facilities, and may also be more generally important for thermodynamic properties of dense, partially-ionized plasmas.

By comparison with high-resolution synchrotron x-ray experimental results, we assess several theoretical treatments for the bound-free (core-electron) contribution to x-ray Thomson scattering (i.e., also known as nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering). We identify an often overlooked source of systematic error in the plane- wave form factor approximation (PWFFA) used in the inference of temperature, ionization state, and free electron density in some laser-driven compression studies of warm dense matter. This error is due to a direct violation of energy conservation in the PWFFA. We propose an improved practice for the bound-free term that will be particularly relevant for XRTS experiments performed with somewhat improved energy resolution at the National Ignition Facility or the Linac Coherent Light Source. Our results raise important questions about the accuracy of state variable determination in XRTS studies, given that the limited information content in low-resolution XRTS spectra does not strongly constrain the models of electronic structure being used to fit the spectra.
