Abstract

The aim of this work, conducted in the upper valley of the Khumbu on the southern part of Mount Everest, is to approach in parallel three topics: (i) the dynamics of the water geochemistry, major ions and trace elements; (ii) the stable water isotopes of precipitation and rivers; and (iii) the water uses by the inhabitants. As in most mountain environments, the Khumbu area is threatened by climate change, which impacts the cryosphere and consequently the people and the landscapes. Moreover, changes in water use are also related to new needs stemming from tourism, which strongly affect local livelihood. For the first two topics, new results are presented. They provide details on the global chemical quality of the river water and show how certain elements are seasonally influenced and how other elements allow us to distinguish the water origins within the study zone. Beside the use of stable isotopes to determine mainly the origin of the water flow in the rivers, the isotopic patterns confirm the double climatic influence of the westerly fluxes in the winter season and of the Asian monsoon in the summer season. Regarding water use, the study does not conclude on the potability of the water resource, because microbiologic and organic components have not been investigated; however it confirms that the chemical quality is good. In conclusion, we attempt to predict the future of the geochemistry patterns submitted to the double pressure of climate change and the surge in tourism.

Abstract

The French critical zone initiative, called OZCAR (Observatoires de la Zone Critique–Application et Recherche or Critical Zone Observatories–Application and Research) is a National Research Infrastructure (RI). OZCAR-RI is a network of instrumented sites, bringing together 21 pre-existing research observatories monitoring different compartments of the zone situated between “the rock and the sky,” the Earth’s skin or critical zone (CZ), over the long term. These observatories are regionally based and have specific initial scientific questions, monitoring strategies, databases, and modeling activities. The diversity of OZCAR-RI observatories and sites is well representative of the heterogeneity of the CZ and of the scientific communities studying it. Despite this diversity, all OZCAR-RI sites share a main overarching mandate, which is to monitor, understand, and predict (“earthcast”) the fluxes of water and matter of the Earth’s near surface and how they will change in response to the “new climatic regime.” The vision for OZCAR strategic development aims at designing an open infrastructure, building a national CZ community able to share a systemic representation of the CZ , and educating a new generation of scientists more apt to tackle the wicked problem of the Anthropocene. OZCAR articulates around: (i) a set of common scientific questions and cross-cutting scientific activities using the wealth of OZCAR-RI observatories, (ii) an ambitious instrumental development program, and (iii) a better interaction between data and models to integrate the different time and spatial scales. Internationally, OZCAR-RI aims at strengthening the CZ community by providing a model of organization for pre-existing observatories and by offering CZ instrumented sites. OZCAR is one of two French mirrors of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (eLTER-ESFRI) project.

Abstract

A 3-year survey has been performed in the Cevennes mountain area, in the South of France, in order to separate surface, shallow sub-surface and groundwater contributions to the flash flood processes. Electrical conductivity, temperature, pH, major and trace elements, total organic carbon and stable isotopes of water were monitored during low flows and floods, in the small (3.9 km(2)) granitic catchment of Valescure (Gard, France). The data collected during the campaign are widely presented, in relation to the different hydrological compartments (rainfall, shallow soil water, groundwater, streamwater). This constitutes at present the most complete hydrogeo-chemical database in the Cevennes area, available within the Hymex data base

Abstract

International audience; Assessment of recharge, paleo-recharge and groundwater residence time of aquifer systems of the Sahel is pivotal for a sustainable management of this vulnerable resource. Due to its stratified aquifer system, the Lake Chad Basin (LCB) offers the opportunity to assess recharge processes over time and to link climate and hydrology in the Sahel. Located in north-central Africa at the fringe between the Sahel and the Sahara, the lake Chad basin (LCB) is an endorheic basin of 2,5.106 km2. With a monsoon climate, the majority of the rainfall occurs in the southern one third of the basin, the Chari/Logone River system transporting about 90% of the runoff generated within the drainage basin. A complex multi-layer aquifer system is located in the central part of the LCB. The Quaternary unconfined aquifer, covering 500 000 km2, is characterized by the occurrence of poorly understood piezometric depressions. Artesian groundwaters are found in the Plio-Pleistocene lacustrine and deltaic sedimentary aquifers (early Pliocene and Continental Terminal). The present-day lake is in hydraulic contact with the Quaternary Aquifer, but during past megalake phases, most of the Quaternary aquifer was submerged and may experience major recharge events. To identify active recharge area and assess groundwater dynamics, one hundred surface and groundwater samples of all layers have been collected over the southern part of the LCB. Major and trace elements have been analyzed. Measurements of 36Cl have been carried out at CEREGE, on the French 5 MV AMS National Facility ASTER and 14C activities have been analyzed for 17 samples on the French AMS ARTEMIS. Additionally, the stable isotopic composition was measured on the artesian aquifer samples. In the Quaternary aquifer, results show a large scatter with waters having very different isotopic and geochemical signature. In its southern part and in the vicinity of the surface waters, groundwaters are predominantly Ca-Mg-HCO3 type waters with very high 36Cl/Cl ratio (>1000.10-15 at/at) very likely linked to the bomb pulse. These high 36Cl/Cl ratios are in the same order than the 36Cl/Cl signature of surface waters active modern recharge in this area. In the other part of the Quaternary Aquifer, waters are Na-HCO3-SO4-Cl type and are characterized by lower 36Cl/Cl ratios (around 200.10-15 at/at), suggesting longer residence time of the groundwaters. The 14C contents of the unconfined aquifer waters are all above 50 pmc, suggesting recent or Holocene recharge of this system. In contrast, the confined aquifer has a more homogeneous geochemical signature. The 14C contents are below all 0.5 pmc and mainly below detection level. 36Cl/Cl ratios are

Abstract

Hydrological processes and water balance of a tropical crystalline bedrock catchment in Benin (Donga, upper Oueme River). Hydrodynamic, geochemical, and subsurface geophysical investigations, for two consecutive years with contrasting rainfall 2 conditions, were used to characterize the hydrological processes occurring, and the water balance of a 586-km(2) watershed in Benin (Africa). The water table's monitoring shows that recharge occurs by direct infiltration of rainfall, and represents between 5 to 24% of the annual rainfall. Both surface water outflow, limited to the rainy season, and water chemistry indicate a weak groundwater contribution to river discharge. This implies that the calculated variations in annual runoff coefficients (of 14 and 28%) are mainly governed by surface and subsurface flows. To cite this article: B. Kamagati et al., C. R. Abstract

The present study contributes to the knowledge of the biogeochemistry of Pb, Cd, Cu, and Ni in the Mediterranean Thau Lagoon, southern France, which is an important shellfish farming system. The concentrations of the metals were determined in sediment cores and the overlying waters using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Particular attention was given to the determination of dissolved Cu species because of their dual role as essential nutrient and toxicant to planktonic organisms. Dissolved Cu speciation was determined using the diffusive gradient in thin-film technique (DGT) and competitive ligand exchange-adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (CLE-ACSV). Our data indicated a significant historical contamination of the sediments, which commenced in the second half of the 19th century, with trace metal inputs persisting until the end of the 20th century. In recent years a decrease in metal contamination has become apparent. The maxima observed for Pb, Cd, and Cu profiles probably indicate the occurence of anoxia crises. A strong complexation of the dissolved Cu species was observed in the waters of the Thau Lagoon, which reduced the bioavailability of Cu. The dissolved Cu2+ concentrations were probably too low to cause direct toxic effects on shellfish, but the highest concentration (5.29 pM) observed in this study can potentially influence phytoplankton communities. A comparison between the Cu speciation data indicates that up to 50 of the complexed Cu determined using CLE-ACSV was DGT labile.

Abstract

In 1994, a research project on radon was initiated with the participation of five European countries. The aim of the project was to carry out a comparison experimental survey on six different sites, located in the Lund-Kiel-Leipzig-Montpellier-Barcelona-Roma areas. This paper reports on: 1) quality assurance in measuring techniques with application to standardization and calibration facilities of the participating countries; and, 2) standardized measuring methods and measurement protocols of indoor radon levels, soil gas radon levels, and weather parameters. In addition, some results obtained from a first survey with active and passive detectors are presented. No clear correlations between indoor radon levels, soil radon levels, and environmental parameters were found.

Abstract

Samples from seven springs and two wells around Jocotitlan volcano (Mexico), mainly used as drinking water supplies, were studied for physical, chemical, bacteriological and radioisotopic parameters. The temperature of the majority of the water was 5°C higher than the average atmospheric temperature of the zone, indicating a geothermal potential. The water type was bicarbonated mixed, related to magmatic CO2 absorption, and showed a dilution factor from meteoric waters. Calculations of the geothermal reservoir temperature indicate a potential use for direct rural and industrial applications. Trace elements, including radon and radium, were within the drinking water standards. Four springs showed bacteriological contamination due to cattle access and domestic waste pollution. Abstract

Radon (222Em) emanation measurements in soil gases are reported in connection with the 1982 eruptions of El Chichón Volcano.222Em detection is performed with LR-115 cellulose nitrate track detectors. Results show a general decreasing pattern of222Em concentration in soil with time after the eruptions. Activity measurements of radon daughters in ashes show that a large amount of222Em and220Em was released from magma degassing during the eruptions, and that only a fraction of the degassed magma was erupted. An important fluid interaction between the magma chamber and the surrounding sedimentary rock is also suggested.
