2. Conquering Cancer in the 21st Century: Leading a Movement to Save More Lives Worldwide

Abstract

This article examines the current state of the global fight against cancer and of noncommunicable disease in general, the progress to date against cancer, and postulates that there has never been a more challenging--nor more ideal--time to succeed in making significant headway against the disease worldwide. Based on progress made particularly in the past two decades, and with proven interventions and scientific knowledge, it is possible to bring cancer as a major health problem worldwide under control in this century. The article also discusses what the American Cancer Society, the nation's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to saving lives from cancer, is doing to lead a global movement in support of achieving this goal. Abstract

The nature of a healthy lifestyle and its significance to quality of life is examined. Following a discussion on what is involved in a healthy lifestyle, major health problems are described: (1) smoking; (2) alcohol and drug abuse; (3) sexually transmitted diseases; (4) diet and obesity; (5) stress; and (6) inadequate sleep. Recommendations are made for developing a healthy lifestyle that will help to reduce substantially the risk of chronic disease and premature death. Suggestions are made for developing a healthy lifestyle curriculum for schools. References are included as well as sources offering curriculum materials on health education. (JD)

This study was to validate a three-component alcohol attitude scale by testing its ability to discriminate between a sample of U.S. university students and their Egyptian counterparts.
