This work aimed to enhance hemp seed oil encapsulation within a hemp seed protein-alginate complex by optimizing parameters in the solution-enhanced dispersion process, employing supercritical carbon dioxide (SEDS) without reliance on organic solvents or elevated temperatures. By response surface methodology (RSM), the microencapsulation efficacy (MEE), particle size (PS) and peroxide value (PV) was determined with respect to three parameters; temperature (°C), pressure (bar) and feed flow rate (mL/min). The optimum conditions were predicted at temperature (40 °C), pressure (150 bar) and feed flow rate (2 mL/min) to offer an MEE of 89.47%, PS of 7.81 μm and PV of 2.91 (meq/kg oil). In addition, the SEDS method was compared with spray- and freeze-drying for encapsulating hemp seed oil. The findings demonstrated SEDS' superiority, exhibiting exceptional attributes such as the highest MEE, smallest PS and the production of spherical, smooth microcapsules. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: In ancient Mexican cultures, the Persea americana Mill seed has been used against gastrointestinal diseases, due to high concentrations of bioactive compounds. According to Traditional Mexican Medicine, P. americana seed aqueous infusion is used against roundworms, intestinal worms, parasites, and gastrointestinal problems, in a dose taken over three or four days. In addition, Mexican Society of Natural History indicates the traditional use of P. americana seed powder as an antiparasitic, and antibacterial. On the other hand, Helicobacter pylori infection is a factor associated with the development of gastric disease, peptic ulcers as well as some types of gastric lymphomas and gastric cancer in humans; in this way is necessary scientific evidence about P. americana seed effect in gastrointestinal disease., Aim of the Study: The work aimed to evaluate bioactive compounds bioaccessibility and antimicrobial potential against Helicobacter pylori during oral-gastric digestion in vitro of food ingredient from Persea americana Mill. seed and elucidate the possible action mechanism using in silico tools., Materials and Methods: Initially, P. americana seed oil and aqueous extract of P. americana seed were obtained using ultrasound and maceration respectively, and the food ingredient from P. americana seed was obtained. The samples underwent oral-gastric digestions by the INFOGEST method, to continue identifying and quantifying the bioactive compounds by HPLC-DAD and GC-MS. The anti-Helicobacter pylori activity determination were used fourteen Helicobacter pylori clinical strains and reference strains by Susceptibility testing by Minimal Inhibition Concentration, Kinetics of Growth Inhibition of H. pylori, Urease Inhibitory Kinetic. Finally, to elucidate a possible action mechanism used in silico tools (Software AutoDock 4.2.6 and BioVia Discovery v.19.1.0.1.18287)., Results: The lipophilic fraction of P. americana seed detected oleic acid, linoleic acid, and avocadenofuran compounds, and the phenolic fraction showed the presence of catechin, rutin, ellagic, and chlorogenic acid, among others. Phenolic compounds conformational changes during oral-gastric digestion due to mechanical and acid hydrolysis, while lipophilic compounds showed a 20% increase in the gastric phase. Persea americana Mill. seed ingredient (3.08 μg/mL) showed total in vitro inhibition of clinical and reference strains of H. pylori, likewise, the lipophilic fraction had a lower inhibition concentration (2.59 μg/mL) regardless of the strains. Surface tension (γ eq ) of the seed extracts of four lupine cultivars showed values in the range 44.9-46.4 mN/m. The surface compression elasticity (E') of the adsorbed layers and foaming capacity (FC) also showed similar values (E' ∼ 30 mN/m, FC ∼ 100%). The effect of defatting prior to extraction at pH 8.5 depends on the solvent employed - hexane and dichloromethane improved the subsequent protein extraction yield, while ethanol reduced it. The effect of defatting on surface tension could be positive (for hexane and ethanol) or negative (for dichloromethane). Generally, defatting improved the surface compression rheological and foaming parameters. On the other hand, fractionation of the extracts obtained at pH 8.5 from hexane-defatted seeds did not improve significantly the surface activity parameters. Pumpkin seeds represent a valuable source of plant protein and can be utilized in the production of plant-based milks. This study aims to investigate the effects of different pretreatment techniques on the stability of Pumpkin Seed Milk (PSM) and explore potential mechanisms. Raw pumpkin seeds underwent pretreatment through roasting, microwaving, and steaming to prepare PSM. Physiochemical attributes such as composition, storage stability, and particle size of PSM were evaluated. Results indicate that stability significantly improved at roasting temperatures of 160 °C, with the smallest particle size (305 ± 40 nm) and highest stability coefficient (0.710 ± 0.002) observed. Nutrient content in PSM remained largely unaffected at 160 °C. Protein oxidation levels, infrared, and fluorescence spectra analysis revealed that higher temperatures exacerbated the oxidation of pumpkin seed emulsion. Strigolactones (SLs) are plant hormones that regulate shoot branching. In addition, SLs act as compounds that stimulate the germination of root parasitic weeds, such as Striga spp. and Orobanche spp., which cause significant damage to agriculture worldwide. Thus, SL agonists have the potential to induce suicidal germination, thereby reducing the seed banks of root parasitic weeds in the soil. Particularly, phenoxyfuranone-type SL agonists, known as debranones, exhibit SL-like activity in rice and Striga hermonthica . However, little is known about their effects on Orobanche spp. In this study, we evaluated the germination-inducing activity of debranones against Orobanche minor . Analysis of structure-activity relationships revealed that debranones with electron-withdrawing substituents at the 2,4- or 2,6-position strongly induced the germination of Orobanche minor . Lastly, biological assays indicated that 5-(2-fluoro-4-nitrophenoxy)-3-methylfuran-2(5 H )-one (test compound 61 ) induced germination to a comparable or even stronger extent than GR24, a well-known synthetic SL. Altogether, our data allowed us to infer that this enhanced activity was due to the recognition of compound 61 by the SLs receptor, KAI 2d, in Orobanche minor .

Salinity limits the growth and productivity of crops, to reverse these effects, natural pigments with antioxidant bioactivity can be studied, such as turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) and paprika (Capsicum annum L.). Therefore, it aimed to evaluate turmeric and paprika as possible saline stress attenuators and biostimulants during germination and initial development of smooth lettuce seedlings. In the laboratory, the seeds were treated for 1 hour with a solution of paprika and turmeric at doses 0 (negative control), 1, 2, 3 and 4 g L-1, and placed on a substrate with saline solution of sodium chloride 4 g L-1 (-0,4 Mpa), and a positive control, composed of dry seeds arranged in a substrate moistened with distilled water. Physiological quality analysis were carried out, and for the dose that showed the best result (4 g L-1), the treated seeds were grown in a greenhouse, and received weekly applications via foliar with a 4 g L-1 solution for turmeric and paprika. After the crop cycle, morphometric analyzes were performed. The turmeric and paprika solutions were analyzed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to identify the presence of bioactive substances. The turmeric doses were not efficient in overcoming the effects of salinity on seeds and seedlings, which was attributed to the low solubility of turmeric in water. Paprika, although it did not provide the biostimulant effect, was efficient in attenuating the effects of excess salt, at a concentration of 4 g L-1, promoting increases in physiological quality. In HPLC, a very low signal response was noted in relation to samples composed of turmeric and paprika solutions, indicating a low percentage of soluble compounds, which compromises bioactivity, and leads to the need for further analyses using surfactants and/or other solvents with which there is greater affinity.

Aim: The aim of this study was to purify proanthocyanidins from areca nut seeds (P-AN) and to investigate the bactericidal activity and mechanism of the purified products against Streptococcus mutans., Methods and Results: Ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared, Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MADLI-TOF-MS), and thiolysis experiment were used for P-AN chemical analysis. Time-kill analysis and glycolytic pH drop were used to evaluate the activity of S. mutans in vitro. Meanwhile, the investigation of the bacteriostatic mechanism included membrane protein, fluidity, permeability, and integrity tests. The results showed that P-AN was a kind of proanthocyanidin mainly composed of B-type proanthocyanidins and their polymers. Moreover, MADLI-TOF-MS and thiolysis experiments demonstrated that the degree of polymerization of P-AN was 13. The time-kill analysis showed that P-AN had strong bactericidal activity against S. mutans. P-AN at minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) concentrations was able to induce S. mutans death, while complete lethality occurred at 2 MIC. Glycolysis test showed that P-AN significantly inhibited S. mutans acid production (P < .01). The morphological changes of S. mutans were observed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy experiments, which indicated that P-AN destroyed the cellular structure of S. mutans. At the same time, significant changes were observed in membrane proteins, fluidity, permeability, and integrity., Conclusion: P-AN can effectively inhibit the activity of S. mutans. P-AN can reduce the erosion of the tooth surface by the acid of S. mutans. P-AN could break the structure of the cell membrane protein of S. mutans. Due to the benefits of tomato as an antioxidant and vitamin source, allergy to this vegetable food is a clinically concerning problem. Sola l 7, a class I lipid transfer protein found in tomato seeds, has been identified as an allergen linked to severe anaphylaxis. However, the role of lipid binding in Sola l 7-induced allergy remains unclear. Here, the three-dimensional structure of recombinant Sola l 7 (rSola l 7) has been elucidated using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Its interaction with free fatty acids has been deeply studied; fluorescence emission spectroscopy revealed that different long-chain fatty acids interact with the protein, affecting the only tyrosine residue present in Sola l 7. On the contrary, no changes in the overall secondary structure were observed after the analysis of the circular dichroism spectra in the presence of fatty acids. Unsaturated oleic and linoleic fatty acids presented higher affinity and promoted more significant changes than saturated or short-chain fatty acids. 1 H- 15 N HSQC NMR spectra allowed to determine the regions of the protein that were modified when rSola l 7 interacts with the fatty acids, suggesting epitope modification after the interaction. For corroboration, IgG and IgE binding to rSola l 7 were assessed in the presence of free fatty acids, revealing that both IgE and IgG binding were significantly lower than in their absence, suggesting a potential protective role of unsaturated fatty acids in tomato allergy., (© 2024 The Author(s). Resin glycosides are characteristic of plants of the Convolvulaceae family and are well-known purgative ingredients in crude drugs, such as Rhizoma Jalapae, Orizaba Jalapa Tuber, and Pharbitidis Semen, which are used in traditional medicine and derived from plants belonging to this family. Isolated resin glycosides have demonstrated diverse biological activities, including antibacterial, ionophoric, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and multidrug-resistance-modulating properties, as well as cytotoxicity against cancer cells. These compounds consist of hydroxyl fatty acid oligoglycosides (glycosidic acids), with portions of the saccharide moieties acylated with some organic acids to form the core structure. This study investigated the glycosidic acid components of a crude resin glycoside fraction obtained from a methanolic extract of Ipomoea alba L. seeds (Convolvulaceae). Eleven new glycosidic acid methyl esters and one known methyl ester were isolated from a glycosidic acid fraction treated with trimethylsilyldiazomethane in hexane. Their structures were determined using acidic hydrolysis and electrospray ionization-time of fight mass spectrometry and NMR spectral analyses. These compounds are penta-, tetra-, or triglycosides, with methyl 11S-hydroxytetradecanoate or methyl 11S-hydroxyhexadecanoate as the aglycone. Although D-quinovose and L-rhamnose are common monosaccharide components, the remaining monosaccharides are D-glucose, D-xylose, or D-fucose. This comprehensive study explores the phytoconstituents of different parts of pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) including flesh, peel, seeds, pumpkin juice, and pumpkin seed oil. Utilizing advanced analytical techniques including UPLC-QqQ-MS and GC-TSQ-MS combined with multivariate statistical analysis, 94 distinct chromatographic peaks from various chemical classes were annotated. Predominant classes included phenolic acids, flavonoids, cucurbitacins, amino acids, triterpenoids, fatty acids, sterols, carotenoids, and other compounds. For more comprehensive chemical profiling of the tested samples, fractionation of the different parts of the fruit was attempted through successive solvent extraction. The unsaponifiable part of the oils, analyzed by GC, showed that the phytosterols, namely ß-sitosterol, and stigmasterol are in the majority. All pumpkin extracts showed significant inhibition of carbohydrase enzymes and glucose uptake promotion by cells. Pumpkin flesh butanol fraction exhibited potent α-glucosidase inhibition, while pumpkin defatted seed methylene chloride fraction showed strong α-amylase inhibition. Additionally, pumpkin seed oil and defatted seed petroleum ether fraction demonstrated high glucose uptake activity. Bioactive metabolites including vaccenic acid, sinapic acid, kuguacin G, luteolin hexoside, delta-7-avenasterol, cucurbitosides and others were unveiled through OPLS multivariate models elucidating the anti-diabetic potential of pumpkin. Roasting is necessary for bringing out the aroma and flavor of coffee beans, making coffee one of the most consumed beverages. However, this process also generates a series of toxic compounds, including acrylamide and furanic compounds (5-hydroxymethylfurfural, furan, 2-methylfuran, 3-methylfuran, 2,3-dimethylfuran, and 2,5-dimethylfuran). Furthermore, not much is known about the formation of these compounds in emerging coffee formulations containing alcohol and sugars. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of roasting time and degree on levels of acrylamide and furanic compounds in arabica coffee using fast and slow roasting methods. The fast and slow roasting methods took 5.62 min and 9.65 min, respectively, and reached a maximum of 210 °C to achieve a light roast. For the very dark roast, the coffee beans were roasted for 10.5 min and the maximum temperature reached 245 °C. Our findings showed that the levels of acrylamide (375 ± 2.52 μg kg -1 ) and 5-HMF (194 ± 11.7 mg kg -1 ) in the slow-roasted coffee were 35.0 % and 17.4 % lower than in fast-roasted coffee. Furthermore, light roast coffee had significantly lower concentrations of acrylamide and 5-HMF than very dark roast, with values of 93.7 ± 7.51 μg kg -1 and 21.3 ± 10.3 mg kg -1 , respectively. However, the levels of furan and alkylfurans increased with increasing roasting time and degree. In this study, we also examined the concentrations of these pollutants in new coffee formulations consisting of alcohol-, sugar-, and honey-infused coffee beans. Formulations with honey and sugar resulted in higher concentrations of 5-HMF, but no clear trend was observed for acrylamide. On the other hand, formulations with honey had higher concentrations of furan and alkylfurans. These results indicate that optimizing roasting time and temperature might not achieve the simultaneous reduction of all the pollutants. Chinese sour jujube is an important fruit for both medicine and food and effects various biological activities. Although the Chinese sour jujube seed (Ziziphi spinosae semen) is rich in oil, its lipid profiles is significantly affected by the extraction process. However, no studies to date have comprehensively analysed the lipid composition and bioactivity of Ziziphi spinosae semen oil processed using different methods. In this study, we compared the effects of commonly-used pressed, ultrasonic-assisted, and Soxhlet extraction methods on the lipid composition, characteristics, and antioxidant properties of Ziziphi spinosae semen oil. Nineteen subclasses and 390 lipid molecular species were identified, of which 24 lipid molecular species could potentially be used as biomarkers for different processing methods. Correlation analysis revealed that 57 lipids were significantly correlated with the antioxidant capacity (r > 0.9 and P < 0.05). These results indicate that Ziziphi spinosae semen oil is rich in bioactive lipids. These data greatly expand our understanding of the bioactive lipids of Ziziphi spinosae semen oil. Peruvian fava beans (PFB) are used in traditional cuisine as a nutrient-rich, flavorful, and textural ingredient; however, little is known about their industrial properties. This study evaluated the physicochemical, nutritional, and techno-functional characteristics of PFB varieties: Verde, Quelcao, and Peruanita. PFB exhibited distinct physical characteristics, quality parameters, and morphology. The color patterns of the seed coat and the hardness were the main parameters for distinguishing them. Nutritionally, all three samples exhibited high protein (23.88-24.88 g/100 g), with high proportion of essential amino acids, high dietary fiber (21.74-25.28 g/100 g), and mineral content. They also contain polyphenols (0.79-1.25 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (0.91-1.06 mg CE/g) with antioxidant potential (16.60-21.01 and 4.68-5.17 µmol TE/g for ABTS and DPPH assays, respectively). Through XRD measurements, the semi-crystalline nature of samples was identified, belonging to the C-type crystalline form. Regarding techno-functionality, PFB flours displayed great foaming capacity, with Verde variety being the most stable. Emulsifying capacity was similar among samples, although Peruanita was more stable during heating. Upon heating with water, PFB flours reached peak viscosities between 175 and 272 cP, and final viscosities between 242 and 384 cP. Quelcao and Verde formed firmer gels after refrigeration. Consumers are interested in new sustainable ingredients but are unwilling to accept undesirable sensory properties in their food products. Luffa (Luffa cylindrica) is mainly harvested and processed for its fibrous network, which is used as an exfoliator, while its seeds are usually discarded. However, the seeds have been found to have various nutritional benefits. As such, this study investigated the sensory properties of luffa seed powder added to yogurt and compared it to other seed powder (flax, sunflower, chia, and hemp). Consumers (n = 107) evaluated their liking of the different seeds added to yogurt using hedonic scales and the sensory properties using check-all-that-apply (CATA). The luffa seeds when mixed with yogurt were associated with off-colour, off-flavour, metallic, strong flavour, bitter, salty, earthy and decreased consumer liking. The flax and sunflower seeds were found to be sweet, nutty, cooked, mild flavour, and to have a smooth texture. The overall liking scores for the flax and sunflower seed samples were significantly higher than the luffa and hemp samples. Red kidney beans (RKB) serve as a powerhouse packed with a plethora of largely unexplored extraordinary chemical entities with potential significance. However, their nutraceutical applications as a functional hypoglycemic food still lag behind and warrant further investigation. With a scope to optimize chemical and biological traits of RKB, green modification approaches (processing methods) seem inevitable. Accordingly, the current study offered the first integrative workflow to scrutinize dynamic changes in chemical profiles of differently processed RKB and their potential entanglements on diabetes mitigation using Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) coupled with chemometrics. Different physical and biological processing treatments namely germination, fermentation, cooking and dehulling were preliminarily implemented on RKB. Complementarily, the concomitant metabolite alterations among differently processed RKB were monitored and interpreted. Next, an in-vitro α-amylase and α-glycosidase inhibitory testing of the differently processed samples was conducted and integrated with orthogonal projection to latent structures (OPLS) analysis to pinpoint the possible efficacy compounds. A total of 72 compounds spanning fatty acids and their glycerides, flavonoids, phenolic acids, amino acids, dipeptides, phytosterols and betaxanthins were profiled. Given this analysis and compared with raw unprocessed samples, it was found that flavonoids experienced notable accumulation during germination while both fermentation and dehulling approaches sharply intensified the content of amino acids and dipeptides. Comparably, Fatty acids, phytosterols and betaxanthins were unevenly distributed among the comparable samples. Admittedly, OPLS-DA revealed an evident discrimination among the processed samples assuring their quite compositional discrepancies. In a more targeted approach, kaempferol-O-sophoroside, quercetin, carlinoside and betavulgarin emerged as focal discriminators of sprouted samples while citrulline, linoleic acid, linolenoyl-glycerol and stigmasterol were the determining metabolites in cooked samples. Our efficacy experimental findings emphasized that the different RKB samples exerted profound inhibitory actions against both α-amylase and α-glycosidase enzymes with the most promising observations in the case of sprouted and cooked samples. Coincidently, OPLS analysis revealed selective enhancement of possible efficacy constituents primarily citrulline, formononetin, gamabufotalin, kaempferol-O-sophoroside, carlinoside, oleic acid and ergosterol in sprouted and cooked samples rationalizing their noteworthy α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities. Infection with Schistosoma japonicum (S. japonicum) is an important zoonotic parasitic disease that causes liver fibrosis in both human and domestic animals. The activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) is a crucial phase in the development of liver fibrosis, and inhibiting their activation can alleviate this progression. Total flavonoids of litchi seed (TFL) is a naturally extracted drug, and modern pharmacological studies have shown its anti-fibrotic and liver-protective effects. However, the role of TFL in schistosomiasis liver fibrosis is still unclear. This study investigated the therapeutic effects of TFL on liver fibrosis in S. japonicum infected mice and explored its potential mechanisms. Animal study results showed that TFL significantly reduced the levels of Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α), Interleukin-4 (IL-4), and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the serum of S. japonicum infected mice. TFL reduced the spleen index of mice and markedly improved the pathological changes in liver tissues induced by S. japonicum infection, decreasing the expression of alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), Collagen I and Collagen III protein in liver tissues. In vitro studies indicated that TFL also inhibited the activation of HCSs induced by Transforming Growth Factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and reduced the levels of α-SMA. Gut microbes metagenomics study revealed that the composition, abundance, and functions of the mice gut microbiomes changed significantly after S. japonicum infection, and TLF treatment reversed these changes. Energy content, moisture content, and energy assimilation efficiency are essential parameters in the food intake rate (FIR) and exposure calculations for bird and mammal risk assessments. The updated European Food Safety Authority guidance document on risk assessment for birds and mammals summarizes these parameters for different food items. For seed treatments, values for cereal seeds are proposed as surrogates for other crops. Oil-containing seeds are expected to have a higher energy content than cereal seeds. This would result in lower FIR and, thus, exposure from consuming such seeds. To be able to calculate reliable exposure values for risk-assessment purposes, we conducted a systematic literature review to collect information on these three parameters for oil-containing seeds (sunflower, oilseed rape, soybean, peanut, sesame, safflower, linseed [flax], white mustard, and castor bean). The search yielded 401 papers, of which 151 contained values for at least one of the parameters of the crops in focus. The overall average energy content value of oil-containing seeds was 24.25 kJ/g (n = 124, SD = 3.00), whereas that for moisture content was 6.57% (n = 296, SD = 1.15). Energy assimilation values were only available for peanut, oilseed rape, soy, linseed, and sunflower for a limited number of bird and mammal species. Mean energy assimilation efficiency for mammals was 82.69% (n = 4, SD = 1.55), whereas values for birds were 57.54% (n = 2, SD = 6.77) for Galliformes and 79.25% (n = 2, SD = 1.82) for Passeriformes. Colored wheats have drawn attention due to their nutritional compounds. However, limited information is obtained on the effects of nitrogen fertilizer on crucial metabolites and grain quality of wheats with different color grain. In the study, the pot experiment was conducted with white (W), blue (B), and purple (P) grain wheats treated with three levels of N (LN, 0 g kg -1 ; MN, 0.05 g kg -1 ; HN, 0.1 g kg -1 ). Higher N level could promote wheat growth, improve grain indexes, and nutrient uptake. SPAD values of flag leaves remained in the order HN > MN > LN across all wheat varieties, and maintained increasing during tested stages under purple wheat. Metabolomics analysis showed that the annotated 358 metabolites mainly belonged to 29 classes, including carboxylic acids and their derivatives, fatty acids, flavonoids, and phenols. 35, 39, and 70 differential accumulated metabolites were respectively found between the WLN vs. WHN, the BHN vs. BLN, and the PHN vs. PLN, which were mainly enriched in "biosynthesis of plant secondary metabolites", "cGMP-PKG signaling pathway", "sphingolipid signaling pathway", "biosynthesis of alkaloids derived from histidine and purine", and "biosynthesis of plant hormones". Additionally, erucic acid was dominated in the three wheat cultivars, and was decreased after treated with high N levels. The Alpinia oxyphylla fruit (AOF) is a popular condiment and traditional Chinese medicine in Asia, known for its neuroprotective compound nootkatone. However, there has not been a comprehensive study of its flavor or the relationship between sensory and bioactive compounds. To address this issue, we examined AOF's microstructure, flavor, and metabolomic profiles during fruit maturation. The key markers used to distinguish samples included fruit expansion, testa pigmentation, aril liquefaction, oil cell expansion, peel spiciness, aril sweetness, and seed bitterness. A full-spectrum metabolomic analysis, combining a nontargeted metabolomics approach for volatile compounds and a widely targeted metabolomics approach for nonvolatile compounds, identified 1,448 metabolites, including 1,410 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs). Notably, 31 DAMs, including nootkatone, were associated with spicy peel, sweet aril, and bitter seeds. Correlational analysis indicated that bitterness intensity is an easy-to-use biomarker for nootkatone content in seeds. KEGG enrichment analysis linked peel spiciness to phenylpropanoid and capsaicin biosynthesis, seed bitterness to terpenoid (especially nootkatone) biosynthesis, and aril sweetness to starch and sucrose metabolism. Cancer metabolism has emerged as a potential target for innovative therapeutic approaches in the treatment of cancer. Cancer metabolism has received much attention, particularly in relation to glucose metabolism. It has been observed that human malignancies have high levels of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activity which is an important enzyme of glucose metabolism. This overactivity is associated with the cell death and angiogenesis, highlighting its potential as a viable target for cancer treatment. This study was conducted to examine the methanolic extracts from the seeds, bark and leaves of litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) in order to discover effective compounds targeting G6PD and potentially active entities against liver cancer. Plant extract screening for the target protein was carried out through enzymatic activity assay. The recombinant plasmid pET-24a-HmG6PD was expressed in E. coli (BL21-DE3) strain, then purified and assessed using metal affinity chromatography with Ni-NTA columns and SDS-PAGE. The cytotoxicity of plant extracts against liver cancer HepG2 cells was assessed using the MTT assay. All three extracts demonstrated significant inhibitory effects (>80% inhibition) against G6PD. They were then subjected to testing at various concentrations, and their IC 50 values were subsequently determined. The extracts of litchi (leaf, IC 50 : 1.199 μg/mL; bark, IC 50 : 2.350 μg/mL; seeds, IC 50 : 1.238 μg/mL) displayed significant inhibition of G6PD activity at lower concentrations. Subsequently, the leaf extract of litchi was further assessed for its impact on HepG2 cell lines in a dose-dependent manner and exhibited strong potential as an inhibitor of cancer cell progression. Moreover, the results of acute toxicity study in mice revealed nontoxic effects of litchi leaf extract on hepatocytes. The present study successfully synthesized a novel biochar adsorbent (M-L-BC) using litchi seed modified with zinc chloride for PFASs removal in water. M-L-BC greatly enhanced removal of all examined PFASs (>95 %) as compared to the pristine biochar (<40 %). The maximum adsorption capacity was observed for PFOS, reaching 29.6 mg/g. Adsorption kinetics of PFASs followed the pseudo-second-order model (PSO), suggesting the predominance of chemical adsorption. Moreover, characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations jointly revealed involvement of surface complexation, electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions in PFAS adsorption. Robust PFAS removal was demonstrated for M-L-BC across a wide range of pH (3-9), and coexisting ions had limited impact on adsorption of PFASs except PFBA. Furthermore, M-L-BC showed excellent performance in real water samples and retained reusability after five cycles of regeneration. Ultrasonic-assisted extraction using a natural deep eutectic solvent (UAE-NADES) is an efficient method for extracting grape seed polyphenols (GSPs). In this study, response surface methodology was used to optimize the extraction of GSPs with UAE-NADES, and the theoretical extraction rate of GSPs was 139.014 mg GAE/g, the actual extraction rate was 135.78 ± 1.3 mg GAE/g. A pseudo-second-order kinetic extraction fitting was established to simulate the extraction process and mechanism (R 2  > 0.99). Analysis of antioxidant capacity, Fourier-infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that UAE-NADES works synergetically to maintain the stability of extracted GSPs. The results of high-performance liquid chromatography showed that catechin (41.14 mg/g) is the main component of GSPs in the extract. The UAE-NADES extraction of GSPs can inhibit the growth of Alternaria alternata at 0.25 mg GAE/g, while the GSPs extracted by other methods can effectively inhibit the growth of Alternaria alternata at 0.35 mg GAE/g. Phytocompounds possess the potential to treat a broad spectrum of disorders due to their remarkable bioactivity. Naturally occurring compounds possess lower toxicity profiles, which making them attractive targets for drug development. Hydnocarpus wightianus seeds were extracted using ethanol, acetone, and hexane solvents. The extracts were evaluated for phytochemicals screening and other therapeutic characteristics, such as free radicals scavenging, anti α-amylase, anti α-glucosidase, and anti-bacterial activities. The ethanolic extract exhibited noteworthy antibacterial characteristics and demonstrated considerable antioxidant, and anti-diabetic effects. The IC50 value of the ethanolic extract for Dpph, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase were found to be 77.299 ± 3.381 μg/mL, 165.56 2.56 μg/mL, and 136.58 ± 5.82 μg/mL, respectively. The ethanolic extract was effective against Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (26 mm zone of inhibition at 100 μL concentration). Molecular docking investigations revealed the phytoconstituent's inhibitory mechanisms against diabetic, free radicals, and bacterial activity. Docking score for phytocompounds against targeted protein varies from -7.2 to -5.1 kcal/mol. The bioactive compounds present in the ethanolic extract were identified by Gas chromatography/Mass spectrometry analysis, followed by molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulation studies to further explore the phytoconstituent's inhibitory mechanism of α-glucosidase, ∝-amylase, radical scavenging, and bacterial activity. The electronic structure and possible pharmacological actions of the phytocompound were revealed through the use of Density Functional Theory (DFT) analysis. Phytochemical investigation on the extract of the seeds of Thevetia peruviana resulted in the isolation of six new cardiac glycosides, namely theveperosides A-F (1-6), including a rare 19-nor-cardenolide (1), together with seven known analogues (7-13). The chemical structures of these compounds were determined based on detailed spectroscopic analysis. The cytotoxic activities of 1-13 were evaluated against MCF-7, HCT-116, HeLa, and HepG2 cancer cell lines, and their structure-activity relationships (SARs) were investigated. Enhancing maize kernel oil is vital for improving the bioavailability of fat-soluble vitamins. Here, we combined favourable alleles of dgat1-2 and fatb into parental lines of four multi-nutrient-rich maize hybrids (APTQH1, APTQH4, APTQH5 and APTQH7) using marker-assisted selection (MAS). Parental lines possessed favourable alleles of crtRB1, lcyE, vte4 and opaque2 genes. Gene-specific markers enabled successful foreground selection in BC 1 F 1 , BC 2 F 1 and BC 2 F 2 , while background selection using genome-wide microsatellite markers (127-132) achieved 93% recurrent parent genome recovery. Resulting inbreds exhibited significantly higher oil (6.93%) and oleic acid (OA, 40.49%) and lower palmitic acid (PA, 14.23%) compared to original inbreds with elevated provitamin A (11.77 ppm), vitamin E (16.01 ppm), lysine (0.331%) and tryptophan (0.085%). Oil content significantly increased from 4.80% in original hybrids to 6.73% in reconstituted hybrids, making them high-oil maize hybrids. These hybrids displayed 35.70% increment in oil content and 51.56% increase in OA with 36.32% reduction in PA compared to original hybrids, while maintaining higher provitamin A (two-fold), vitamin E (nine-fold), lysine (two-fold) and tryptophan (two-fold) compared to normal hybrids. Lipid health indices showed improved atherogenicity, thrombogenicity, cholesterolaemic, oxidability, peroxidizability and nutritive values in MAS-derived genotypes over original versions. Besides, the MAS-derived inbreds and hybrids exhibited comparable grain yield and phenotypic characteristics to the original versions. Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the leading cause of hair loss in adults. Its pathogenesis remains unclear, but studies have shown that the androgen-mediated 5α-reductase-AR receptor pathway and the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway play significant roles. Camellia oleifera is an oil plant, and its fruits have been documented in folklore as having a hair cleansing effect and preventing hair loss. In this study, we used UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS to identify the structure of the substances contained in the polyphenols of Camellia oleifera seed shell. These polyphenols are mainly used for shampooing and anti-hair loss purposes. Next, we used molecular docking technology to dock 41 polyphenols and steroidal 5 alpha reductase 2 (SRD5A2). We found that the docking scores and docking sites of 1,3,6-tri-O-galloylglucose (TGG) and finasteride were similar. We constructed a mouse model of DHT-induced AGA to evaluate the effects of Camellia oleifera seed shell polyphenols (CSSP) and TGG in vivo. Treatment with CSSP and TGG alleviated alopecia symptoms and reduced DHT levels. Additionally, CSSP and TGG were able to reduce androgen levels by inhibiting the SRD5A2-AR receptor signaling pathway. Furthermore, by regulating the secretion of growth factors and activating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, CSSP and TGG were able to extend the duration of hair growth. In conclusion, our study showed that CSSP and TGG can improve AGA in C57BL/6 J mice and reduce the effect of androgen on hair follicle through the two signaling pathways mentioned above. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that H. pedunculosum has hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-gout and antibacterial pharmacological activities. The biologically active chemical components include lignin compounds such as Herpetin, Herpetetrone, Herpetoriol and so on. The natural product displays considerable skeletal diversity and structural complexity, offering significant opportunities for novel drug discovery. Based on the multi-omics research strategy and the 'gene-protein-metabolite' research framework, the biosynthetic pathway of terpenoids and lignans in H. pedunculosum has has been elucidated at multiple levels. These approaches provide comprehensive genetic information for cloning and identification of pertinent enzyme genes. Furthermore, the application of multi-omics integrative approaches provides a scientific means to elucidate entire secondary metabolic pathways. We investigated the biosynthetic pathways of lignin and terpene components in H. pedunculosum and conducted bioinformatics analysis of the crucial enzyme genes involved in the biosynthetic process using genomic and transcriptomic data. We identified candidate genes for six key enzymes in the biosynthetic pathway. This review reports on the current literature on pharmacological investigations of H. pedunculosum, proposing its potential as an antidiabetic agent. Moreover, we conclude, for the first time, the identification of key enzyme genes potentially involved in the biosynthesis of active compounds in H. pedunculosum. Currently, the use of natural adsorbent for the elimination of pollutants, such as heavy metals, from water has been extensively investigated. However, the low adsorption capacity of these natural adsorbents has led researchers towards the use of synthetic surfactants, which themselves can become environmental pollutants. In this research, an investigation was conducted to examine the impact of a surfactant obtained from the Seidlitzia rosmarinus plant on the adsorption properties of Pumpkin seed shell (PSS), a natural adsorbent. As a result, a modified version of PSS, known as functionalized Pumpkin seed shell (FPSS), was developed, and the effect of these two adsorbents on the elimination of Pb 2+ has been investigated. FESEM, EDS, FTIR, and BET analyses were conducted to get detailed information of the adsorbent. Additionally, the effects of contact time, dosage of the adsorbent, pH of the solution, and temperature on the adsorbent were studied. The experimental data was fitted using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Jovanovic isotherms. The PSS adsorbent was fitted best with the Langmuir isotherm, showing an adsorption capacity of 160.80 mg g -1 , while the FPSS adsorbent was fitted with the Jovanovic isotherm, exhibiting an adsorption capacity of 553.57 mg g -1 . Furthermore, kinetic modeling results indicated that the data for these adsorbents follow pseudo-second-order kinetic. Finally, the impact of coexisting ions and reusability was examined, with the FPSS adsorbent outperforming PSS. To investigate the effects of discharge plasma on Agropyron mongolicum seeds, various treatments including direct exposure to discharge plasma, combined treatment with discharge plasma and plasma-activated water (PAW) were applied to the seeds. The changes in germination rate, MDA content, and volatile compound levels of Agropyron mongolicum seeds after different treatments were examined. The results showed that the direct effect of plasma had no significant effect on the MDA content or germination rate of Agropyron mongolicum seeds due to the limited penetration depth. However, the combined effect of plasma and activated water could cause active nitrogen and oxygen particles to enter the seeds and cause oxidative stress damage. After 18 h of combined treatment, the MDA content increased significantly, and the germination rate decreased to below the semilethal dose, which was 33.44 %. After plasma treatment, 55 volatile compounds, mainly alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, were identified from the seeds of Agropyron mongolicum. Due to the oxidation and modification of the plasma, the content of most aldehydes increased with increasing reaction time. After screening, 13 volatile organic compounds could be used as potential markers to distinguish between different treatment methods. Five undescribed monoterpene-chalcone conjugates (1-5), one undescribed hypothetical precursor of diarylheptanoid (6), two undescribed diarylheptanoids (7-8), and fourteen known compounds (9-22) were isolated from the seeds of Alpinia katsumadai. Their structures were elucidated through the interpretation of HRESIMS, NMR, ECD, and X-ray diffraction data. The genus Penicillium has provided us with the household antibiotic penicillin and the well-known lipid-lowering agent mevastatin. The strain Penicillium sp. SZ-1 was found to grow vigorously in an intact Pinus koraiensis seed, it is inferred that the strain may develop unique mechanisms associated with the biosynthesis of rare metabolites. Further fermentation of the strain on solid rice medium yielded thirteen undescribed compounds, including three andrastin-type meroterpenoids (1-3), two α-pyrone polyketides (4 and 5), and eight sesquicarane derivatives (6-13), along with seven known compounds (14-20). Their structures were determined by detailed analysis of the spectroscopic and spectrometric data (NMR and HRESIMS), in addition to comparisons of the experimental and calculated ECD data for absolute configurational assignments. The hemiacetal moiety in compounds 1 and 2 and the 3α-hydroxy group in compound 3 were rarely found in the andrastin-type meroterpenoid family. The sesquicaranes belong to a small group of sesquiterpenoid that are rarely reported. Bioassay study showed that compound 1 exhibited inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 with MIC values of 64 and 32 μg/mL, respectively. In addition, compounds 1 and 3 displayed weak DPPH radical scavenging activities. The andrastins and sesquicaranes in this study enriched the structural diversity of these classes of terpenoids. Genetic information of bean seed traits can be an immense help to the breeder in selection of suitable genotypes and the appropriate breeding strategies. Therefore, the investigation aims to assess the genetic variability and to elucidate the genetic analysis of seed dietary fibre, carbohydrate, seed calcium and phosphorus contents of Phaseolus vulgaris in the high Guinean Savannah zone conditions. 5 × 5 half-diallel crosses of these traits were conducted in randomized complete block design with three replications. Results revealed high differences between five lines beans (p < 0.05), suggesting the sufficient genetic diversity for these traits. High broad sense heritability values were recorded for seed dietary fibre, carbohydrate and seed calcium content, attesting a strong implication of the genetic factors in the control of these traits; thereby, these traits can be improved through regular selection. The ratio GCA/SCA was greater than unity only for seed phosphorus content. It indicates the prevalence of additive gene effect in the involvement of the genetic control for this trait. The combining ability analysis revealed highly significant differences between parental GCA effects and F 1 cross SCA effects. The PB, BI, CT and PR lines beans will prove useful in common bean breeding programmes as donor genotypes, in the development of bean genetic resources for betterment improvement of nutritional traits., (© 2024. Background: Mung beans are highly nutritious but their leguminous flavor limits their development. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) fermentation can decrease unwanted bean flavors in legumes and enhance their flavor. This study examined the influence of Lactobacillus fermentation on the flavor characteristics of mung bean flour (MBF) using volatile compounds and non-targeted metabolomics., Results: Lactobacillus plantarum LP90, Lactobacillus casei LC89, and Lactobacillus acidophilus LA85 eliminated 61.37%, 48.29%, and 43.73%, respectively, of the primary bean odor aldehydes from MBF. The relative odor activity value (ROAV) results showed that fermented mung bean flour (FMBF) included volatile chemicals that contributed to fruity, flowery, and milky aromas. These compounds included ethyl acetate, hexyl formate, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, and 2,3-butanedione. The levels of amino acids with a fresh sweet flavor increased significantly by 93.89, 49.40, and 35.27% in LP90, LC89, and LA85, respectively. A total of 49 up-regulated and 13 down-regulated significantly differential metabolites were annotated, and ten metabolic pathways were screened for contributing to the flavor. The correlation between important volatile compounds and non-volatile substances relies on two primary metabolic pathways: the citric acid cycle pathway and the amino acid metabolic system., Conclusion: The flavor of MBF was enhanced strongly by the process of Lactobacillus fermentation, with LP90 having the most notable impact. The study is the first to formulate and investigate potential of papaya seed chloroform extract based solid lipid nanoparticles (PSCEN) as antifertility agents on male Bandicota bengalensis. The prepared nanoparticles were spherical of size 300-600 nm. The release kinetics showed a controlled release of the drug with major release over 48 h. To assess the antifertility effects of PSCEN, adult male rats were fed a diet containing two different concentrations of PSCEN (5% and 10%) for 15 days under bi-choice conditions. The mean total active ingredient ingestion of the rats in the two treated groups ranged from 2.13-3.31 and 3.92-5.87 g/100g body weight, respectively. No adverse effects of treatment on body weight were observed. Also, no mortality of rats was observed. The treatment had a significant effect on the weight of the testis and the epididymis, but not on the other organs. Sperm motility (%), sperm viability (%), sperm count (millions/ml), sperm mitochondrial activity (%), sperm nuclear chromatin de-condensation (%) and sperm hypo-osmotic swelling (%) were significantly decreased, and sperm abnormality (%) significantly increased compared to the vehicle control group. The reproductive success rates of male rats treated with 5% and 10% PSCEN and mated with untreated female rats were 20.00-66.67% and 16.67%, respectively, while in untreated female rats mated with male rats of vehicle control group, reproductive success rate was 33.33 to 80%. The study found a maximal antifertility effect of the 10% PSCEN containing bait, which was irreversible up to 105 days after stopping treatment, suggesting long-term efficacy.

Peony seed is an excellent oil crop, and peony seed oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids needed by the human body. In this study, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), fingerprint, and chemometrics, the correlation between the content of inorganic elements in oil peony seeds, their origins, and varieties were investigated. Meanwhile, estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI), and carcinogenic risks (CR) were combined to evaluate the comprehensive health risks of heavy metals in peony seed oil. The results showed that the difference in the content of inorganic elements could identify the varieties of oil peony seeds. Sr, K, Ca, V, Al, Fe, Cu, Ba, As, Ga, Co, and Rb were the characteristic inorganic elements that played a role in identification. In addition, The THQs and HIs (< 1) for non-carcinogenic elements indicated no risk. The CRs indicated that the carcinogenic harm was negligible. The study concluded that three varieties of peony seed oil would not pose any health hazard. It provided an effective comprehensive method for the identification of oil peony seeds and predicted the potential health risks of edible peony seed oil, providing a reference for the development and consumption of peony seed oil food., (© 2023. Background: The present study investigated the structure, functional and physicochemical properties of lotus seed protein (LSP) under different pH environments. The structures of LSP were characterized by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), zeta potential, particle size distributions, free sulfhydryl and rheological properties. The functional and physicochemical properties of LSP were characterized by color, foaming property, emulsification property, solubility, oil holding capacity, water holding capacity, differential scanning calorimetry analysis and surface hydrophobicity., Results: LSP was mainly composed of eight subunits (18, 25, 31, 47, 51, 56, 65 and 151 kDa), in which the richest band was 25 kDa. FTIR results showed that LSP had high total contents of α-helix and β-sheet (44.81-46.85%) in acidic environments. Meanwhile, there was more β-structure and random structure in neutral and alkaline environments (pH 7.0 and 9.0). At pH 5.0, LSP had large particle size (1576.98 nm), high emulsion stability index (91.43 min), foaming stability (75.69%) and water holding capacity (2.21 g g -1 ), but low solubility (35.98%), free sulfhydryl content (1.95 μmol g -1 ) and surface hydrophobicity (780). DSC analysis showed the denaturation temperatures (82.23 °C) of LSP at pH 5.0 was higher than those (80.10, 80.52 and 71.82 °C) at pH 3.0, 7.0 and 9.0. Eight previously undescribed diterpenoids, caesamins A-H (1-8), were separated and identified from the seeds of Caesalpinia minax Hance. Their structures were characterized by extensive spectroscopic data and X-ray crystallographic analysis. Structurally, caesamin A (1) is the first cassane-type diterpenoid with a C23 carbon skeleton containing an unusual isopropyl. Caesamin F (6) represents the first example of cleistanthane diterpenoid from the genus Caesalpinia. Caesamins B (2) and F (6) exhibited inhibitory activity against LPS-induced nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 macrophages with IC 50 values of 45.67 ± 0.92 and 42.99 ± 0.24 μM, comparable to positive control 43.69 ± 2.62 μM of NG-Monomethyl-L-arginine. Amaranth is a pseudocereal that contains between 50 and 60% starch, gluten-free protein, and essential amino acids. This study investigates the physicochemical changes in Amaranthus spp. grains, flour, isolated starch and nanocrystals during germination and malting. The moisture content increased from 8.9% to 41% over 2 h of soaking. The percentage of germination increased rapidly, reaching 96% after 60 h, a remarkable advantage over other cereals. The nutrient composition varied, including protein synthesis and lipid degradation. Lipid concentration decreased during malting, except for soaking, which increased by 62%. Scanning electron microscopy shows that germination does not cause morphological changes on the outer surface of the grains, while transmission electron microscopy indicates the presence of isolated nanocrystals with orthorhombic crystal structure confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The viscosity profile shows a decrease in peak viscosity. Meat products consumption is rising globally, but concerns about sustainability, fat content, and shelf life. Synthetic additives and preservatives used for extending the shelf life of meat often carry health and environmental drawbacks. Seed mucilage, natural polysaccharides, possesses unique functional properties like water holding, emulsifying, and film forming, offering potential alternatives in meat processing and preservation. This study explores the application of seed mucilage from diverse sources (e.g., flaxseed, psyllium, basil) in various meat and meat products processing and preservation. Mucilage's water-holding and emulsifying properties can potentially bind fat and decrease the overall lipid content in meat and meat-based products. Moreover, antimicrobial and film-forming properties of mucilage can potentially inhibit microbial growth and reduce oxidation, extending the shelf life. Background: In vitro single-cell experiments may yield inconsistent results compared to clinical trials. To enhance the reliability of cosmetic active ingredient screening, a coculture model of B16F10-HaCaT cells was established in vitro based on the structural characteristics of human skin, thereby improving the credibility of experimental outcomes. Currently, most cosmetic whitening additives primarily target simple efficacy goals such as inhibiting tyrosinase activity or melanin transfer. Therefore, investigating novel and efficient whitening additives has become a prominent research focus., Objectives: The aim is to establish an in vitro cell coculture model for more reliable experimental results and investigate the mechanism by which Paeonia lactiflora Pall seeds oil inhibits melanin production and transfer., Methods: The impact of different concentrations of Paeonia lactiflora Pall seeds oil on cocultured cell proliferation rate was assessed using cck8 assay. Tyrosinase inhibition ability in cocultured cells was tested using levodopa as a substrate. Melanin production inhibition ability in coculture cells was evaluated by lysing cells with sodium hydroxide. The effect of Paeonia lactiflora Pall seeds oil on dendrite-related gene expression levels was examined through qPCR analysis. Additionally, Western blotting was employed to study the effect of Paeonia lactiflora Pall seeds oil on dendrite-related protein expression levels., Results: Different concentrations of Paeonia lactiflora Pall seeds oil did not affect the proliferation activity of cocultured cells. A specific concentration of α-MSH increased cell tyrosinase activity, cellular melanin content, as well as Rac1, Cdc42, and PAR-2 gene and protein expression related to dendritic formation. Treatment with a certain concentration of Paeonia lactiflora Pall seeds oil resulted in decreased tyrosinase activity and melanin content in cells along with downregulated expression levels of Rac1, Cdc42, and PAR-2 genes and proteins associated with dendritic formation., Conclusions: Paeonia lactiflora Pall seeds oil at specific concentrations exhibits the ability to inhibit tyrosinase activity, decrease melanin content, and possesses the potential to impede melanin transfer., (© 2024 The Author(s). Background: The continuous cultivation of rice-wheat in the same field is a key element of double-cropping systems in the Indo-Gangetic plains. Yields of such cropping systems are increasingly challenged as climate change drives increases in temperature, terminal stress and uneven rainfall, delaying rice harvesting and subsequently delaying sowing of wheat. In this paper, we evaluate the optimum sowing dates to achieve high grain yield and quality of wheat cultivars in northwest India. Three cultivars of wheat, HD-2967, HD-3086 and PBW-723, were sown on three different dates at the research farm of ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, to generate different weather conditions at different phenological stages. Different biophysical attributes, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate, were measured at different phenological stages. Yield and grain quality parameters such as protein, starch, amylopectin, amylose and gluten were measured in different cultivars sown on different dates., Results: Biophysical parameters were found to be higher in timely sown crops followed by late-sown and very late-sown crops. Further, the different sowing dates had a significant (P < 0.05) impact on the grain quality parameters such as protein, starch, amylopectin, amylose and gluten content. Percentage increases in the value of starch and amylose content under timely sown were ~7% and 11.6%, ~5% and 8.4%, compared to the very late-sown treatment. In contrast, protein and amylopectin contents were found to increase by ~9.7% and 7.5%, ~13.8% and 16.6% under very late-sown treatment., Conclusion: High-temperature stress during the grain-filling periods significantly decreased the grain yield. Reduction in the grain yield was associated with a reduction in starch and amylose content in the grains. The protein content in the grains is less affected by terminal heat stress. Cultivar HD-3086 had higher growth, yield as well as quality parameters, compared to HD-2967 and PBW-723 in all treatments, hence could be adopted by farmers in northwest India. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Background: The rapid and accurate detection of moisture content is important to ensure maize quality. However, existing technologies for rapidly detecting moisture content often suffer from the use of costly equipment, stringent environmental requirements, or limited accuracy. This study proposes a simple and effective method for detecting the moisture content of single maize kernels based on viscoelastic properties., Results: Two types of viscoelastic experiments were conducted involving three different parameters: relaxation tests (initial loads: 60, 80, 100 N) and frequency-sweep tests (frequencies: 0.6, 0.8, 1 Hz). These experiments generated corresponding force-time graphs and viscoelastic parameters were extracted based on the four-element Maxwell model. Then, viscoelastic parameters and data of force-time graphs were employed as input variables to explore the relationships with moisture content separately. The impact of different preprocessing methods and feature time variables on model accuracy was explored based on force-time graphs. The results indicate that models utilizing the force-time data were more accurate than those utilizing viscoelastic parameters. The best model was established by partial least squares regression based on S-G smoothing data from relaxation tests conducted with initial force of 100 N. The correlation coefficient and the root mean square error of the calibration set were 0.954 and 0.021, respectively. Lentils have a valuable physicochemical profile, which can be affected by the presence of antinutrients that may impair the benefits arising from their consumption. Different treatments can be used to reduce these undesirable compounds, although they can also affect the general composition and behaviour of the lentils. Thus, the effect of different processing methods on the physicochemical and techno-functional properties, as well as on the antinutritional factors of different lentil varieties was studied. Phytic acid was eliminated during germination, while tannins and trypsin inhibitors are mostly affected by cooking. Functional properties were also altered by processing, these being dependent on the concentration of different nutrients in lentils. All the studied treatments affected the physicochemical profile of lentils and their functional properties. Background: Low recovery of conventional fertilizers remains a significant bottleneck for maize production globally. In particular, with phosphate fertilization, zinc (Zn) is prone to precipitation in soil, reducing recovery of both phosphorus (P) and Zn by maize., Results: The present study was designed to investigate the synergistic effect of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) and P on maize crop growth, yield, and nutrient uptake under ZnO seed coating and foliar application in a randomized complete block design. However, plants were subjected to two ZnO NPs levels (0.5 and 12 kg ha -1 ) amended with two P levels (45 and 90 kg ha -1 ). ZnO NPs, especially in the form of foliar application, with a P dose of 90 Kg ha -1 significantly (P < 0.05) improved maize crop growth, yield, and nutrient uptake compared with control. In comparison with the control group, plants grown in these conditions absorbed higher levels of Zn and P. Zn uptake rose to 16.34 g ha -1 , 137.88 g ha -1 , and 166.89 g ha -1 in roots, grains, and stover respectively, and P uptake increased to 0.80 mg kg -1 , 10.066 mg kg -1 , and 12.17 mg kg -1 respectively. Additionally, seed emergence rate, plant height, and cob length increased by up to 2%, 1177 cm 2 , and 3.3 cm respectively compared with control. Furthermore, Zn use efficiency was increased up to 38.55% in ZnO NPs foliar application., Conclusions: Application of ZnO NPs at 0.5 kg ha -1 in the form of foliar application with 90 kg ha -1 P dose produced a more pronounced increment in the parameters studied than ZnO NPs seed coating did. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Cadmium (Cd) has become an important heavy metal pollutant because of its strong migration and high toxicity. The industrial production process aggravated the Cd pollution in rice fields. Human exposure to Cd through rice can cause kidney damage, emphysema, and various cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, posing a grave threat to health. As modern technology develops, the Cd accumulation model in rice and in-situ remediation of Cd pollution in cornfields have been extensively studied and applied, so it is necessary to sort out and summarize them systematically. Therefore, this paper reviewed the primary in-situ methods for addressing heavy metal contamination in rice paddies, including chemical remediation (inorganic-organic fertilizer remediation, nanomaterials, and composite remediation), biological remediation (phytoremediation and microbial remediation), and crop management remediation technologies. The factors that affect Cd transformation in soil and Cd migration in crops, the advantages and disadvantages of remediation techniques, remediation mechanisms, and the long-term stability of remediation were discussed. The shortcomings and future research directions of in situ remediation strategies for heavily polluted paddy fields and genetic improvement strategies for low-cadmium rice varieties were critically proposed. Nitrogen (N) is a key factor for plant growth and affects anthocyanin synthesis. This study aimed to clarify the potential mechanisms of N levels (LN, 0 kg·ha -1 ; MN, 150 kg·ha -1 ; HN, 225 kg·ha -1 ) in anthocyanin synthesis and grain quality of colored grain wheat. HN increased the yield component traits and grain morphology traits in colored grain wheat while decreasing the processing and nutrient quality traits. Most quality traits were significantly negatively correlated with the yield composition and morphological traits. Anthocyanin was more accumulated under LN conditions, but other related yield and morphological traits of colored grain wheat declined. The anthocyanin content was the highest in blue wheat, followed by that in purple wheat. Cyanidin-3- O -(6- O -malonyl-β-d-glucoside) and cyanidin-3- O -rutinoside were the predominant anthocyanins in blue and purple wheat. The identified anthocyanin-related metabolites were associated with flavonoid biosynthesis, anthocyanin biosynthesis, and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. Therefore, the study provided information for optimizing nitrogen fertilizer management in producing high quality colored wheat and verified the close relationship between anthocyanin and low N condition.

The demand for natural Vanilla has increased rapidly, creating the need for more potential sources of high-quality Vanilla essence. Understanding the geographical influences on the aroma profile of Vanilla is essential. This study demonstrates the first comparative analysis of odorant compositions in the three most important Vanilla varieties: Vanilla planifolia , Vanilla pompona , and Vanilla tahitensis from different origins. Following the screening for odor-active molecules through gas chromatography-olfactometry and aroma extract dilution analysis (GC-O and AEDA), selected compounds were quantified using stable isotope dilution assays (SIDA) and their dose over threshold values (DoTs) were calculated. Vanillin was confirmed as the most important odor-active compound due to its highest DoT value, especially in the V. planifolia sample. Meanwhile, 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde showed higher DoT factors than vanillin in V. pompona and partially in V. tahitensis samples. This indicates their role as discriminative odorants for these varieties. The heightened DoT values of 3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethyl-2(5 H )-furanone in Uganda Vanilla samples unveil geographical influences on the odorant profile within V. planifolia species. Additionally, 2-methyl-3-(methyldithio)furan was identified for the first time in Vanilla samples with diverse DoT values from different species and origins.

Plant cell culture technology helps to obtain natural plant-derived metabolites. The callus of sorghum, a prominent cereal crop, possesses various metabolites with potential health benefits. However, the epigenetic mechanism regulating metabolic biosynthetic capabilities in sorghum remains unknown. Therefore, we conducted N6-methyladenine (6mA) methylome analysis using transcriptome profiling and metabolome analysis to investigate the role of 6mA alterations in two calluses having different biosynthetic capacities, which were derived from immature sorghum embryos. Our findings indicate that the 6mA upregulation within gene bodies is crucial in transcriptional activity potentially mediated by the DNA demethylase SbALKBH1. Furthermore, 6mA was significantly enriched in genes involved in the biosynthesis of flavonoids and isoflavonoids. This could serve as a novel source of bioactive compounds for human health. Thus, 6mA could play an essential role in flavonoid biosynthesis in the sorghum callus.

An effective method was developed for preparing galloylated procyanidins (GPCs) using galloyl-attached nucleophilic degradation. Under degradation conditions optimized through Box-Behnken design and single-factor experiments, two dimeric and three tetrameric GPCs were produced, with the yield of procyanidin B2-3'- O -gallate (B2-3'-G) reaching up to 232 mg/g (PPCs). The structure of B2-3'-G was identified by UV, FTIR, NMR, CD, MS, and phloroglucinolysis. Furthermore, the protective effect of B2-3'-G against alcohol-induced liver injury (ALI) was investigated. Compared with the parent compounds, B2-3'-G exhibited a stronger capacity for inhibiting ALI, attributed to its polymerization degree and galloyl group. Subsequent experiments revealed that the pretreatment of BRL-3A cells with B2-3'-G prior to ethanol improved ALI through activation of the Nrf2-HO-1/NQO1 pathway and initiation of enzymatic antioxidant systems. These findings suggest that GPC B2-3'-G is a potential hepatoprotective agent, which provides a new perspective for functional development of GPCs.

In this paper, we present analytical methodologies for the determination of the thiazolidine fungicide flutianil (trade name GATTEN) and its primary metabolite OC56635 in hemp cannabis matrices. A total of nine crop matrices were tested: whole seed, fiber, flower buds, hemp hearts, hemp seed oil, hemp meal, hemp flour, ethanol extracted CBD resin (CBD-E), and supercritical CO 2 extracted CBD resin (CBD-C). Processing of the CBD-E and CBD-C crop fractions was carried out in-house using methods detailed herein. Field sample analysis utilized sequential extractions, stacked solid phase extraction (SPE) column cleanups, and evaporation to prepare the samples for LC-MS/MS quantitation. Method validations for each fraction were carried out using untreated hemp matrices over a minimum of three levels, with lowest levels of method validation (LLMV) of 0.010 μg/g for all fractions except the CBD resins, for which LLMV was 0.020 μg/g. Flutianil-treated samples from nine field sites were collected from several crop production regions and analyzed to determine the distribution of incurred flutianil and OC56635 residues within the different hemp matrices. This data was generated in support of nationwide registration with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).
