Search

The design of small solenoids without/with-partial insulation among turns or layers has been proven to grant higher thermal stability than for standard insulated cases. This technology implies higher safety standards, by allowing for 1-100 V highest voltage in the single TF coil; at the same time, a passive/simpler quench protection systems (QPS) becomes a concrete opportunity. Besides, experiments and simulations on large-scale solenoids do not guarantee yet the same advantages, as the redistribution of currents after quench is not yet clear and the temperature margins allowed by LTS are narrower. The possibility for full internal energy dissipation is here discussed analytically, highlighting the already high final temperatures being reached and the limits of the held hypotheses. \\ This study presents therefore a new effective 3-D original numerical model, developed for simulating in a fast fashion charge/discharge and quench of a EUROfusion DEMO toroidal field (TF) coil, by coupling both electrical and thermal physics in the same solver. Its structure is explained as well as its first benchmarks. Finally, the first results are reported of a parametric study where only turn-turn localized bridges are considered, discussing the consequences and the future outlook for this simulation work.

We report on the design and commissioning of a new spectrometer for muon-spin relaxation/rotation studies installed at the Swiss Muon Source (S$\mu$S) of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Switzerland). This new instrument is essentially a new design and replaces the old general-purpose surface-muon instrument (GPS) which has been for long the workhorse of the $\mu$SR user facility at PSI. By making use of muon and positron detectors made of plastic scintillators read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), a time resolution of the complete instrument of about 160 ps (standard deviation) could be achieved. In addition, the absence of light guides, which are needed in traditionally built $\mu$SR instrument to deliver the scintillation light to photomultiplier tubes located outside magnetic fields applied, allowed us to design a compact instrument with a detector set covering an increased solid angle compared to the old GPS., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

We present a direct spectroscopic observation of a shallow hydrogen-like muonium state in SrTiO$_3$ which confirms the theoretical prediction that interstitial hydrogen may act as a shallow donor in this material. The formation of this muonium state is temperature dependent and appears below $\sim 70$ K. From the temperature dependence we estimate an activation energy of $\sim 50$ meV in the bulk and $\sim 23$ meV near the free surface. The field and directional dependence of the muonium precession frequencies further supports the shallow impurity state with a rare example of a fully anisotropic hyperfine tensor. From these measurements we determine the strength of the hyperfine interaction and propose that the muon occupies an interstitial site near the face of the oxygen octahedron in SrTiO$_3$. The observed shallow donor state provides new insight for tailoring the electronic and optical properties of SrTiO$_{3}$-based oxide interface systems., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. The low-temperature microscopic magnetic properties of the quasi-2D heavyfermion compound, CePt2In7 are investigated by using a positive muon-spin rotation and relaxation (?muSR) technique. Clear evidence for the formation of a commensurate antiferromagnetic order below TN=5.40 K is presented. The magnetic order parameter is shown to fit well to a modified BSC gap-energy function in a strong-coupling scenario., Comment: Accepted in Journal of Physics: Conference Series (2014)

We have studied low-temperature magnetic properties as well as high-temperature lithium ion diffusion in the battery cathode materials LixNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 by the use of muon spin rotation/relaxation. Our data reveal that the samples enter into a 2D spin-glass state below TSG=12 K. We further show that lithium diffusion channels become active for T>Tdiff=125 K where the Li-ion hopping-rate [nu(T)] starts to increase exponentially. Further, nu(T) is found to fit very well to an Arrhenius type equation and the activation energy for the diffusion process is extracted as Ea=100 meV., Comment: Submitted to Journal of Physics: Conference Series (2014)

Polarized negative muons were used to study the behaviour of the boron acceptor centre in synthetic diamond produced by the chemical vapour deposition (CVD) method. The negative muon substitutes one of the electrons in a carbon atom, and this muonic atom imitates the boron acceptor impurity in diamond. The temperature dependence of the muon spin relaxation rate and spin precession frequency were measured in the range of 20 - 330 K in a transverse magnetic field of 14 kOe. For the first time a negative shift of the muon spin precession was observed in diamond. It is tentatively attributed to an anisotropic hyperfine interaction in the boron acceptor. The magnetic measurements showed that the magnetic susceptibility of the CVD sample was close to that of the purest natural diamond., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We investigate magnetic ordering in metallic Ba[Fe(1-x)Mn(x)](2)As(2) and discuss the unusual magnetic phase, which was recently discovered for Mn concentrations x > 10%. We argue that it can be understood as a Griffiths-type phase that forms above the quantum critical point associated with the suppression of the stripe-antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave (SDW) order in BaFe2As2 by the randomly introduced localized Mn moments acting as strong magnetic impurities. While the SDW transition at x = 0, 2.5% and 5% remains equally sharp, in the x = 12% sample we observe an abrupt smearing of the antiferromagnetic transition in temperature and a considerable suppression of the spin gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. According to our muon-spin-relaxation, nuclear magnetic resonance and neutron-scattering data, antiferromagnetically ordered rare regions start forming in the x = 12% sample significantly above the N\'eel temperature of the parent compound. Upon cooling, their volume grows continuously, leading to an increase in the magnetic Bragg intensity and to the gradual opening of a partial spin gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. Using neutron Larmor diffraction, we also demonstrate that the magnetically ordered volume is characterized by a finite orthorhombic distortion, which could not be resolved in previous diffraction studies most probably due to its coexistence with the tetragonal phase and a microstrain-induced broadening of the Bragg reflections. We argue that Ba[Fe(1-x)Mn(x)](2)As(2) could represent an interesting model spin-glass system, in which localized magnetic moments are randomly embedded into a SDW metal with Fermi surface nesting., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

Recently discovered A-Fe-Se (A - alkali metal) materials have questioned the most popular theories of iron-based superconductors because of their unusual electronic structure [1]. Controversial photoemission data taken in the superconducting state [2-7] are in conflict with highly magnetic state seen by neutron-, muSR-spectroscopies and transport/thermodynamic probes [8-10]. These results lead to suggestions to consider all iron-based materials as originating from Mott-insulators or semiconductors, thus once again raising the question of close relation between the cuprates and Fe-based superconductors [e.g. 2]. Here we study electronic and magnetic properties of Rb0.77Fe1.61Se2 (Tc = 32.6 K) in normal and superconducting states by means of photoemission and muSR spectroscopies as well as band structure calculations. We demonstrate that the puzzling behavior of these novel materials is the result of separation into metallic (~12%) and insulating (~ 88%) phases. Only the former becomes superconducting and has a usual electronic structure of electron-doped FeSe-slabs. Our results thus imply that the antiferromagnetic insulating phase is just a byproduct of Rb-intercalation and its magnetic properties have hardly any relation to the superconductivity. Instead, we find that also in this, already third class of iron-based compounds, the key ingredient for superconductivity is a certain proximity of a van Hove singularity to the Fermi level. We present a detailed investigation of the magnetic and structural properties of magnetically doped 3D topological insulator Bi2Se3. From muon spin relaxation measurements in zero magnetic field, we find that even 5% Fe doping on the Bi site turns the full volume of the sample magnetic at temperatures as high as ~250 K. This is also confirmed by magnetization measurements. Two magnetic "phases" are identified; the first is observed between ~10-250 K while the second appears below ~10 K. These cannot be attributed to impurity phases in the samples. We discuss the nature and details of the observed magnetism and its dependence on doping level., Comment: 7 pages and 6 figures

In this work we attempt to establish the best time resolution attainable with a scintillation counter consisting of a plastic scintillator read out by a Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiode. The measured time resolution is inversely proportional to the square root of the energy deposited in the scintillator, and scales to 18ps (sigma) at 1MeV. This result competes with the best ones reported for photomultiplier tubes., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

In this work we present an elegant solution for a scintillation counter to be integrated into a cryogenic system. Its distinguishing feature is the absence of a continuous light guide coupling the scintillation and the photodetector parts, operating at cryogenic and room temperatures respectively. The prototype detector consists of a plastic scintillator with glued-in wavelength-shifting fiber located inside a cryostat, a Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiode (G-APD) outside the cryostat, and a lens system guiding the scintillation light re-emitted by the fiber to the G-APD through optical windows in the cryostat shields. With a 0.8mm diameter multiclad fiber and a 1mm active area G-APD the coupling efficiency of the "lens light guide" is about 50%. A reliable performance of the detector down to 3K is demonstrated., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

Recent H1 data on triple differential dijet cross sections in $e^\pm p$ interactions in the region of low photon virtualities are shown to be in reasonable agreement with the predictions of the NLO QCD calculations obtained using the program NLOJET++.
