In this study, we observed natural methane (CH4) hydrate sediments, which are a type of unconventional natural gas resources, using x-ray computed tomography (CT). Because CH4 hydrates are formed by hydrogen bonding of water molecules with CH4, material decomposition becomes challenging when CH4 hydrates coexist with liquid or solid water in natural sediments. Tri-contrast (absorption, refraction, and scattering) imaging was performed via diffraction enhanced x-ray CT optics using monochromatic synchrotron x rays. The quantitative characterization of the contrast changes successfully enabled the decomposition of CH4 hydrates coexisting with frozen seawater (ice) in natural sediments obtained from the Okhotsk Sea. This study reveals complementary structural information about the microtexture and spatial relation among CH4 hydrates, ice, and pores by utilizing the distinct physical properties of x rays when passing through the materials. Ecosystems are increasingly challenged by the multiple facets of climate change, coupled with intensifying land‐use pressures. These co‐occurring stressors can interact in complex ways, but we lack an empirical understanding of the impact of higher‐order interactions on temporal patterns. Using 128 flow‐through circular stream mesocosms, we investigated the individual and combined effects of two climatic stressors (CO2 enrichment, flow variability) and two land‐use‐related stressors (siltation, light—as lack of shading) on algal communities and net ecosystem productivity (NPP) in a full‐factorial design. The sediment pulses coincided with high flow to mimic erosion events, whereas CO2 and light disturbances were applied continuously, as they would in nature. Sediment emerged as a key stressor for algal biomass. Land‐use stressors had more pervasive individual effects, whereas climate‐change‐related stressors were more important in up to three‐way interactions with other stressors. However, CO2 was a key driver of NPP, followed by sediment and light, whereas flow variability was only important in interactions with other stressors. The effects of sediment and flow on algal biomass depended strongly on their temporal patterns. The combined effect of an increasing number of stressors on algal biomass appeared to reach saturation with three active stressors, with no apparent additional effect caused by the fourth stressor. Synthesis. Sediment emerged as a key stressor in streams. Despite the mounting evidence and the multitude of available mitigation strategies, this problem persists worldwide. The complex interactions uncovered in our study illustrate context‐dependency that can be masked in two‐factor experiments. In order to distinguish terrestrial material sources in the Okinawa Trough (OT), this study analyzed four surface sediment samples from the northern, middle, and southern parts of the OT using detrital zircon U-Pb age analysis. The detrital zircon age distributions in the northern Okinawa Trough (N-OT) predominantly fall into 1,000-2,300 Ma and 100-600 Ma age groups. In contrast, in the middle Okinawa Trough (M-OT) and southern Okinawa Trough (S-OT), the detrital zircon age groups of 100-600 Ma and 600-1,000 Ma increase significantly, while the age groups of 1,000-2,300 Ma and >2,300 Ma decrease. Detrital zircons from the N-OT primarily originate from the Yellow River and mixed with the Old Yellow River, while those from the M-OT come mainly from the Yellow River, Yangtze Rivers, and East China Sea. And Zhuoshui River maybe a potential source for the M-OT. The detrital zircons from the S-OT are mainly influenced by the Yangtze River, with some effects from the Lanyang River. This study utilizes detrital zircon U-Pb age analysis to gain a better understanding of the terrestrial material sources in various regions of the OT. Most of the zircon grain are coarse, with grain sizes of 40-150 µm long and 30-100 µm wide in the N-OT, smaller in the M-OT and S-OT in this study, which are probably not modern deposits, but the products in the low sea level period of last glaciation mixed with modern sediments. The transport and sedimentation processes reflect the comprehensive influence of sea level change, Kuroshio Current, river input, East Asian monsoon and other factors from last glaciation to present. Background: The flood in July 2021 is considered one of the largest flood disasters in Western Europe in decades, with massive socio-economic consequences. The potential emission and remobilization of anthropogenic pollutants can lead to additional environmental consequences, which need to be addressed in long-term mitigation strategies. The Inde River and its tributary, the Vichtbach River, form a catchment located at the transition from the low mountain ranges of the Eifel to the lowlands of the Lower Rhine Embayment in Germany. The area has been an industrial and mining hotspot for centuries, making it a high-risk area for flood sediment pollution. The present study provides an ecotoxicological screening of flood sediments of the Vicht–Inde catchment to gain an impression of the degree of contamination by organic pollutants by means of in vitro effect-based method. Sediment samples were collected within days after the flood and fractionated prior to biotesting, and supportive instrumental geochemical analysis was performed. Results: Flood sediments did not reveal estrogenic potential, which was included in the testing strategy as a relevant endpoint for industrial chemicals and untreated wastewater. In contrast, moderate-to-high dioxin-like activity was observed in 70% of the sediment samples with a peak dioxin-like potential at the restored section of the Inde. Overall, four hotspot samples were identified as at risk, which aligned mostly with the high concentration of organic pollutants including PAHs and PCBs. The fractionation allowed the identification of PAHs and their derivates as the most likely toxicity drivers for dioxin-like activity in the sediments of the Vicht–Inde catchment. Conclusion: The results provide first information on the prioritization of hotspot locations at risk for a detailed ecotoxicological profiling and a post-flood monitoring of organic contamination. The identified sinks of contamination in the floodplain areas can be considered a source for remobilization of pollution in future flood events, which is highly relevant for the receiving Rur River. Marine sediments host heterogeneous protist communities consisting of both living benthic microorganisms and planktonic resting stages. Despite their key functions in marine ecosystem processes and biogeochemical cycles, their structure and dynamics are largely unknown. In the present study, with a spatially intensive sampling design we investigated benthic protist diversity and function of surface sediment samples from three subregions of the Mediterranean Sea, through an environmental DNA metabarcoding approach targeting the 18S V4 region of rRNA gene. Protists were characterized at the taxonomic level and trophic function, both in terms of alpha diversity and community composition, testing for potential differences among marine subregions and bathymetric groups. Overall, Alveolata and Stramenopiles were the two divisions that dominated the communities. These dominant groups exhibited significant differences among the three Mediterranean subregions in the alpha diversity estimates based on the detected ASVs, for all computed indices (ASV richness, Shannon and Simpson indices). Protist communities were also found to be significantly different in terms of composition at the order rank in the three subregions p-value < 0.01). These differences were mainly driven by Anoecales, Peridiniales, Borokales, Paraliales and Gonyaulacales, which together contributed almost 80% of the average dissimilarity. Anoecales was the dominant order in the Ionian – Central Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea, but with considerably different relative abundances (52% and 36%, respectively), while Borokales was the dominant order in the Western Mediterranean Sea (33%). Similarly, significant differences among the three marine subregions were also highlighted when protist assemblages were examined in terms of trophic function, both in terms of alpha diversity (calculated on the ASVs for each trophic group) and community composition p-value < 0.01. In particular, the Adriatic Sea stood out for having the highest relative abundance of autotrophic/ mixotrophic components in the surface sediments analyzed. Conversely, no significant differences in protist assemblages were found among depth groups. This study provided new insights into the taxonomic and trophic composition of benthic protist communities found in Mediterranean surface sediments, revealing geographical differences among regional seas. Fluvial networks are characterised by spatial and temporal transitions as geomorphic and ecological processes within these systems are mediated longitudinally by sediment and water fluxes which vary spatially in magnitude and variability. The aim of this special issue was to shed light on the nature of source-to-sink fluvial transitions associated with spatial and temporal variability in geomorphic and hydrological processes. We encouraged contributions that considered fluvial transitions at any spatial or temporal scale, and invited research that addressed the implications of such transitions. The number of submissions was limited, which was potentially indicative of the lack of field-based studies being conducted at a catchment- or source-to-sink scale. Two of the published submissions considered longitudinal transitions in sediment sources using a sediment finger-printing approach, while the remaining two articles combined traditional fluvial sedimentology techniques with optically stimulated luminescence chronology to deduce controls on river reach flood dynamics. As we enter a time of unprecedented human impact on the environment, there is a clear need for future research to focus on the catchment as a holistic unit as the interconnectedness of landscape pattern and process has implications for biodiversity, water quality, ecosystem service provision and thus catchment management. Erosion is the main cause of damage to unpaved roads. This study utilized rainfall simulators to quantify erosion on unpaved roads, controlling variables such as rainfall intensity and slope. A laboratory model of an unpaved road was utilized to evaluate soil loss in an experimental setup. A total of 72 tests were conducted to compare simulated conditions on unpaved roads for three soil types with three slope variations, and eight rainfall intensities. The impact of each variable (soil type, slope, and rainfall intensity) on soil loss was analyzed for 30-minute rainfall events. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to assess soil erosion response to terrain slope for the three soil types, revealing statistical differences in soil loss between low slopes (2%) and steep slopes (7%) with p -values of.04 (sandy soil),.00007 (sandy silt soil), and.00008 (loam silt soil). Correlation analysis demonstrated a strong relationship between rainfall intensity and soil loss (R 2 =.76) for sandy soil and sandy silt soil. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) indicated a linear relationship between soil loss and rainfall intensity, with significant differences (p <.05). The findings suggest that soil loss on unpaved roads is positively correlated with slope and rainfall intensity. However, this relationship is not always linear; sandy soil exhibited a nonlinear relationship, especially with high rainfall intensities, whereas sandy silt soil showed a linear relationship with evaluated rain intensities. The type of soil influences erosion process, with higher erosion rates observed in sandy silt soils compared to loam silt soils. Heavy metals mainly exist on the surface of sediment particles and are transported using particulate matter as carriers. Therefore, the particle size of sediment particles can affect the adsorption, release, and migration of heavy metals. This study aim to investigate the distribution characteristics and chemical fraction of Cd, Pb, and As contents in sediments of different particle sizes using the BCR method, and to determine the key factors affecting the distribution of heavy metals through mineralogical methods such as XRD and EDS. The results revealed that the overall content of various forms of heavy metals increases with the decrease of particle size, mainly presents in fine particles. The mineralogical analysis results indicated that fine particles predominantly contained clay minerals such as chlorite and illite and coarse particles mainly include primary minerals. Due to the mining areas in the middle-upstream, Cd, Pb and As were primarily associated with galena, sphalerite and pyrite, respectively. At geologic timescales, a significant proportion of the sediment eroded from continents is transferred from rivers to littoral cells, then through submarine canyons to deep ocean basins. Accumulation and occasional discharge of sediment from canyon headwall regions is a likely driver for the sediment gravity flows believed to be responsible for much of this mass transport, but the responsible mechanisms and event timescales in canyon heads are imprecisely defined, largely due to the drowning of canyon heads since the last glaciation and the resulting dearth of modern depositional environments to observe. We investigated a littoral cell adjacent to Mattole submarine canyon in Northern California to better understand the influence of bathymetry and coast shape on sediment trajectories and hypothesize that canyon heads promote littoral sediment accumulation due to bathymetric sheltering of the adjacent coast from waves and convergence of littoral cells exposed to varying wave direction. The uppermost gullies of Mattole Canyon extend to the littoral cell, and a train of sediment waves within the uppermost thalweg of Mattole Canyon suggests that gravity-driven flows of shore-derived sediment may have recently occurred. Mattole Canyon and nearby Mendocino Canyon flow into the deep Mendocino Channel, which has the highest observed Late Holocene sediment accumulation rates in Northern California. We documented the beach slope, grain size, and sediment provenance along 15 km of coast adjacent to Mattole Canyon and conducted numerical wave modeling to infer the dominant direction and magnitude of sediment transport, relative wave sheltering by bathymetry, and estimated sediment mobility in the vicinity of the canyon head over a multi-year period. South of the canyon headwall, in the vicinity of the Mattole River outlet, coarser sediment rich in metasandstone clasts and steeper beach slopes coincide with decadal-scale beach accretion. North of the canyon head, sediments are generally finer, beaches are flatter, clast lithologies include more quartz and mudstone grains, and there is decadal-scale net erosion. Wave modeling suggests the Mattole headwall region is subject to sustained sheltering from waves due to canyon bathymetry, littoral sediment convergence above the canyon head for much of a typical year, and occasional bed entrainment of sediment in the canyon's uppermost gullies by large waves. Larger winter waves from the northwest likely result in net southerly drift north of the canyon head, with a high likelihood of preferentially transporting fine-grained, more quartz-rich sediment towards the Mattole headwall. Smaller summer swells from the west and south likely results in net northerly transport of metasandstone clast-rich Mattole River-derived sediment towards the canyon head. The imbalance in seasonality in wave conditions, coast shape, and sediment delivery by the Mattole River and other coastal creeks is broadly consistent with the spatial patterns in grain size, mineralogy, slope, and beach width that we observe in the vicinity of the canyon, and the net delivery of sediment to the Mattole Canyon head. An approximate mass balance of sediment flux from coastal streams feeding Mattole River littoral cell suggests that sediment volumes likely accumulate in the canyon headwall region that could supply several density flow events in a typical decade. These findings highlight the importance of the connectivity of the canyon to the nearshore region for the processes and products in canyons and fans. We hypothesize that feedbacks between canyon bathymetry, sediment accumulation, and mass evacuating flows promotes the long-term persistence of canyon systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The proposed algorithm for calculating the base of dense clay soils was used in the calculation of rigid airfield and automobile coverings, railway embankments and slab foundations of large structures and in the body of earthworks (earthwork of hydraulic structures, earthwork of railways and highways, earthen dams) under static influences. The results of their numerical calculations showed that the linear models of such structures differ significantly from the real behavior of the soil, taking into account their plastic and rheological properties (sediments are underestimated by 2-3 times). The modules of soil deformation G (shear resistance) decrease when using nonlinear models, which leads to an increase in rheological and plastic properties, this process depends on the rate of intensity of deformations and stresses. All this must be taken into account when constructing and operating large and responsible structures. This requires a deeper study of the soil properties, confirmed by experimental data. In this work the equations of the soil state, experimentally obtained using triaxial compression devices, were used and an algorithm for calculating the soil base was compiled on their basis. The advantage of this algorithm is that it allows to obtain solutions for 3 base models and evaluate their effect on the stress-strain state inside the considered array and under the sole of the slab foundation. This paper presents an integrated simulation of future hydrological droughts using different climate scenarios for the Piancó River basin. Streamflow and sediment yield are estimated using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model, and hydrological droughts are calculated using the Streamflow Drought Index (SDI). The study incorporates two future climate scenarios: RCP 4.5 (optimistic) and RCP 8.5 (pessimistic). The SDI is determined based on a series of simulated future flows to identify drought events within the basin. The results show that the model calibration and validation demonstrated excellent agreement with observed data (R² = 0.83, NSE = 0.82 for calibration and R² = 0.89, NSE = 0.77 for validation). When comparing the scenarios, reductions in flow volume by −75.86% and sediment yield by −86.5% are noted, indicating a significant decrease in sediment contribution to the outlet. Interestingly, the most critical years related to drought events, as determined by the SDI, do not coincide across the pessimistic and optimistic scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bolivia has an outstanding tetrapod ichnological record from the uppermost Cretaceous deposits plus a new Triassic locality recently reported. Here, we report a new ichnosite, the first for the Jurassic to earliest Cretaceous in the Castellón Formation (Tarija, Bolivia) bearing about 350 dinosaur tracks. With the exception of few tridactyl tracks, all exhibit sauropod characteristics. The exposed set consists of three mediumgauge, subparallel large quadrupedal trackways, with one trackway oriented in opposite direction to the other two. The best preserved trackway shows large pedes of about 95 cm and 75 cm in length and width, respectively. The trackmaker was about 3.80 m in height at the hip and walked at a speed under 5 km/h. Available evidence suggests that the producer of the more detailed trackway may be a member of non-Neosauropoda Eusauropoda, even if a titanosauriform producer cannot be discarded. Dozens of small-sized sauropod tracks, less than 15 cm in pes diameter, appear associated with two of the trackways. The distribution of these trackways provides elements to test gregariousness among trackmakers if a possible synchronism is accepted. Wanderings recognisable on the sediment surface suggest that they may collectively represent an ichnological example of herd behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, the seven-step extraction procedure (SSEP) proposed by our laboratory team was modified to reduce the number of fractions from seven to five (FSEP) without affecting its effectiveness. By this way, the modified SSEP was investigated by comparing the quantity of trace (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn) and major (Ca, Fe, Mn) elements leached from two sediments (TH2 and T16). Compared to the SSEP, the shortened sequential test allows to reach the same results in terms of reproductibility. Results confirm that the water-soluble step is negligeable and can be omitted for the sediments. The percentage of the total leached elements Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn were 23%, 13%, 58%, 55%, 92%, 63%, 81%, 65% and 80%, respectively, for both procedures SSEP and FSEP. However, merging the reducible fractions revealed for some elements a little reduction of the leached quantities in comparison to the original SSEP. Over reducible fraction, the leached Fe element in T16, achieves 4% for SSEP and 3% for FSEP. This was explained by the partial dissolution of the amorphous and crystalline irons. Based on the reduced number of fractions, the used extraction filters (28 Vs 20) and the extraction time (18 h Vs 13.5 h), FSEP appeared to be easier for manipulation without loss of its effectiveness. Gravel replenishment is one existing solution for restoring riverbeds below dams. Prediction of erosion processes is crucial for river management planning of efficient replenishment. This study investigates the capacity of a large-scale, two-dimensional morphodynamic model to reproduce berm erosion and sediment wave propagation. The model enables quantification of the efficiency of several management scenarios according to berm geometry, location and sediment supply condition (dam closed or not during floods). Results show that replenishment efficiency is strongly dependent on the berm geometry and sediment supply. Berms should be located as close as possible to the low-flow channel and be as long as possible. Desynchronization between hydrographs and sedigraphs could be responsible for propagating sediment deficit which reduces the efficiency of replenishment. This study experimentally investigated the temporal evolution of the scour parameters downstream of a trapezoidal piano key weir. The densimetric Froude number (Frd50) in the range of 0.39–0.57 and the relative vertical distance of the sediment bed level to the weir toe (Δz/P) in the range of 0.025–0.5 were taken into consideration. In general, with an increase in Frd50, the scouring rate, maximum scour depth, scour hole area and scour hole volume enhanced over time. The increases in the scour parameters were greater at the initial stages of the tests. About 87, 80, 65 and 70% of the maximum scour depth, weir toe scour, scour hole area and scour hole volume occurred within the first 20% of the durations of the tests, respectively. Any increase in Frd50 and Δz/P augmented the scour depth at the weir toe. The results also indicated that the distance of maximum scour depth from the weir increased for greater values of Δz/P and Frd50. The amounts of scour downstream of the outlet keys were greater than those downstream of the inlet keys. The trend of variations of the longitudinal bed profiles remained nearly unchanged over time. Zealandia has very few biostratigraphic markers to help elucidate the often complex and discontinuously cored stratigraphy of Quaternary sequences on the margins and submarine plateaux of the subcontinent. In this study, a detailed biostratigraphic framework has been developed to help unravel the complex stratigraphy of tectonically deformed Quaternary sediments on the Hikurangi margin of north-eastern Zealandia. The framework is based on well documented and dated 0–1.2 Ma planktic foraminiferal records from Ocean Drilling Project (ODP) Site 181–1123 on the Chatham Rise, just north of the Subtropical Frontal Zone. The framework has 104 biostratigraphic markers and is subdivided using the Sinistral Truncorotalia truncatulinoides Zone (STZ) 0–533 ka, the Dextral Tr. truncatulinoides Zone (DTZ) 533–2440 ka, the lowest common occurrence (LCO) Tr. truncatulinoides (621 ka), the highest common occurrence (HCO) Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (624 ka), and the HCO Tr. crassacarina (1101 ka). Further subdivision is then based on the tops and bases of short-lived climatically-tempered influxes of Globigerinoides ruber, Hirsutella hirsuta, Hr. praehirsuta, Tr. truncatulinoides, Tr. crassacarina, and Nq. pachyderma. Most of these biostratigraphic markers are not unique, but sequences of markers that are unique to each marine isotope stage provide an unprecedented level of biostratigraphic detail and chronological dating when they are used within the contextual chronological framework of keystone biostratigraphic markers. This study focuses on developing a relation between fundamental frequency (fo) and the depth of sediments above the bedrock. The fundamental frequency of the site ranges from 1.25 to 27.19 Hz, whereas the depth of sediments above the bedrock varies from 2 to 145 m. The eastern Shimla region has a fundamental frequency variation from 3.6 to 5.5 Hz, whereas the western and central parts have a fundamental frequency variation from 1.24 to 5.5 Hz and high frequency (>20 Hz) at isolated locations. The seismic data has also been recorded in active mode using MSOR (multichannel simulation with one receiver) to derive the dispersion curve, enabling the derivation of a 1-D, shear wave velocity (Vs) model using a joint fit modelling procedure. The 1-D profile shows variation in Vs from 180 m/s at the top to 760 m/s at bedrock. As per the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) classification, the sites show that almost 40% of the city area fall under stiff soil and 60% fall under very stiff soil categories. Since most of the study region is covered with forest and sloping terrain, an empirical relationship (H = 154.36fo–1.451; R2 = 0.91) has been established for assessing the thickness of unconsolidated sediments. Furthermore, the thickness of sediments is determined by forward modelling by keeping the constant velocity at bedrock (Vb) 800 m/s. Additionally, the spatial map for sediment thickness is generated using the interpolation approach in combination with the forward modelling and regression analysis techniques. Deep biospheric anaerobic microbial sulfate reduction and oxidative sulfur cycling have been studied in long sediment cores mainly acquired as part of IODP explorations. The most remarkable observation in many of these studies is the existence of an active sulfur cycle in the deep subsurface sediments that have very low organic carbon content and are presumably refractory. Here, we investigate the interstitial sulfate concentrations and sulfur isotope ratios in a 290 m-long sediment core collected from the eastern Arabian Sea at a water depth of 2663 m. Continuous decrease in porewater-sulfate concentrations with depth (up to 75 mbsf) coupled with enrichment in δ34SSO4 values suggests organoclastic sulfate reduction (OSR) processes attributed to the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and retention of labile organic substrates amenable to the SRBs. Below a depth of 75 mbsf, the absence of further reduction in sulfate concentration indicates insufficient labile substrate to drive sulfate-reduction activity. An increase in sulfate concentrations at the deeper subsurface (below 128.5 mbsf) coupled with decreasing δ34SSO4 values may be attributed to the oxidation of Fe-sulfide to sulfate. The increase in porewater alkalinity in the lower part of the core has been linked to the silicate degradation process by CO2 produced via the dissolution of CaCO3. Compilation of previous studies from this core, along with our investigation, intrigues future research on organic matter reactivity and microbiological activity in deeper subsurface under oligotrophic depositional regimes. Mangrove wetlands contribute to climate change mitigation through efficient carbon burial, yet microbial methanogenesis offsets these climate benefits. We review the diversity of methanogenic microorganisms in mangrove sediments, present the unrecognized role of bacteria on methanogenesis, and highlight the significance of distinguishing various methanogenic pathways to assess mangrove climate benefits. This study aimed to investigate the critical suction velocity required for lifting sediment off the bed under hydrosuction. Flow characteristics below the suction pipe under unbound and bound conditions were studied experimentally and numerically, and the effects of various parameters on the critical suction velocity, such as suction pipe diameter, suction discharge, suction inlet height, and sediment size, were investigated. The results showed all the parameters significantly affect the critical suction velocity, with suction inlet height being the most influential. Unbound and bound conditions yielded divergent flow characteristics beneath the suction pipe, revealing distinct flow patterns. Interdependency among the parameters affecting critical suction velocity have been studied statistically, and empirical relations are developed to compute the critical suction velocity, its resultant centerline velocity, and the associated flow profile. A proposed relation for critical suction velocity showcased a ±10% error margin, while equations computed resultant centerline velocities and flow profiles with ±15% accuracy, representing satisfactory agreement. These findings can also be helpful in designing efficient suction systems in various sediment-laden water environments. Practical Applications: The current study on hydrosuction sediment removal presents practical solutions for addressing the persistent challenge of reservoir sedimentation. Hydrosuction is an efficient and cost-effective method of sediment removal with minimum disturbance to the connecting structures and surrounding ecosystem and aquatic life, ensuring sustainable reservoir management. The study focuses on providing detailed insight into the behavior of the flow below the suction pipe under varying conditions, which is responsible for sediment movement during hydrosuction. The study also investigates the minimum suction velocity required to lift the sediment off the bed surface. Applicability of hydrosuction is not limited to the desilting of a reservoir; it also holds potential for various applications in multiple fields, such as river and canal restoration, dredging of navigational channels, irrigation canal cleaning, dewatering and slurry removal, contaminant cleanup, trench excavation, flood control, and wastewater management. Harbors on all coasts regularly silt up, receiving sedimentary inputs that progressively reduce the water depths available for navigation. Consequently, they are routinely dredged to guarantee the depths necessary for navigation. Sediments act as a reservoir for anthropogenic contaminants such as heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that enter the aquatic system associated with particles or in solution. The objective of this study is to assess the state of pollution by POPs and heavy metals such as copper and zinc, used in large quantities in antifouling paints, in the sediments of the port of Oran. These were characterized by different methods: size, XRD, calcination, FTIR, NMR, GC–MS, and AAS, in order to determine their main characteristics and heavy metals and POPs content. The particle size is determined by laser particle size distribution. Thus, sediments from Oran port are composed of means and end sands, silt, and clay. The XRD analysis shows that the sediments consist mainly of silicates and calcite. The organic matter was determined by ignition loss at 450 and 550 °C; it is about 7%. Analysis by FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR, and GC–MS of POPs excerpts shows that the sediments are highly polluted by aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons (3372 mg/kg). Finally, metals were determined by AAS method. The results show significant pollution of Zn (313.5 mg/kg) and moderate pollution by Cu (75.6 mg/kg). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abutment scour is a major cause of bridge failures worldwide, leading to disruptions, economic losses, and loss of life. The present experimental study examines countermeasures against abutment scour using hooked-collar protections on vertical-wall and wing-wall abutments (at 45° and 60°) under different flow conditions. All 60 experiments were performed under sub-critical flow conditions by investigating scour around an abutment 20 cm long, 20 cm wide, and 25 cm tall. Two distinct values of the Froude number, 0.154 and 0.179, and a sediment particle diameter (d50) of 0.88 mm were used throughout the experimental phase. The resulting equilibrium scour around the abutments was compared to those with collar and hooked-collar protections. It was determined that the maximum abutment scour depth reduction was 83.89% when hooked collars were placed on vertical wall abutments beneath the bed surface level, and for wing-wall abutments at 45° and 60°, it was 74.2% and 73.5%, respectively, at the bed surface level. Regression analysis was conducted to assess the non-dimensional scour depth (Ds/Yf) and scour reduction (RDs/Yf), with a high enough coefficient of determination (R2 values of 0.96 and 0.93, respectively), indicating high confidence in the analysis. Background: As fire regimes continue to evolve in response to climate change, understanding how fire characteristics have responded to changes in the recent past is vital to inform predictions of future fire events. Aims and methods: Using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, we assessed how fire intensity has changed in two fire-prone landscapes in south-eastern Australia: (1) the Blue Mountains; and (2) Namadgi National Park during the past 3000 years. Key results: Higher aromatic/aliphatic ratios suggest increased high-intensity fire frequency in sediments at the surface of both cores. Increases in the frequency of extreme drought periods, coupled with the change in vegetation and anthropogenic ignitions following colonisation, could have increased the frequency of high-intensity fires in the past ~200 years. Conclusions: FTIR spectroscopy can be used in sediment deposits to infer that the frequency of high-intensity fire events has increased in the past 200 years compared to the previous ~3000 years. Implications: These results are important for understanding how past fire regimes have responded to climate, people and vegetation shifts in the past ~3000 years and can be used to inform models for future predictions and management strategies. This paper considers the features of accumulation of eroded soil material at the foot of the plowed slope and further to the side of the valley in the presence of a lynchet resulting from mechanical tillage on the lower border of arable land. A small catchment area in the area of intense Chernobyl pollution has been studied, where the position of the lower boundary of the arable land coincides with the upper boundary of the side of the valley over the past few decades. This made it possible to trace the spatial patterns of distribution of eroded material under conditions of stable functioning of the lynchet as an important lithodynamic boundary that accumulates and redistributes the slope runoff of sediments. The volume of material from arable slopes was determined using mathematical modeling of erosion based on a high-precision digital terrain model, climate data, soil erodibility, and crop rotations. The intensity of accumulation was estimated using 137Cs of Chernobyl origin as a reliable tracer. The bulk of the eroded material enters the valley network through a system of slope hollows that concentrate the slope runoff and cut through the valleys. In areas of the valley sides outside the runoff concentration zones, the redeposition of the material generally depends on the morphology of the arable slope, occurs locally, and is associated with episodic overflows as a result of the gradual filling of the depression before the lynchet. Under the existing conditions, the proportion of sediments accumulated on the sides of the valley is relatively low in the total sediment balance of the studied catchment area. Significant changes may occur due to a gradual reduction of the barrier role of the lynchet as a result of accumulation of sediments and climate changes that contribute to an increase in erosion rates. Using gamma and alpha spectrometers, the radioactive isotopes 226Ra, 210Pb, 232Th, and 40K were determined in three sediment cores from the Tam Giang-Cau Hai (TG), Thi Nai (TN), and Nai (DN) lagoons, and radiation risk indices were computed. The radioactivity concentrations of 210Pb, 40K, 232Th, and 226Ra were 55.46 Bq/kg, 675.78 Bq/kg, 67.22 Bq/kg, and 34.15 Bq/kg, respectively. The Raeq, ADR, AEDE, Iγr, AUI, Hex, and AGDE indices were 182.31 Bq/kg, 84.46 nGy/h, 0.10 mSV/y, 1.35, 1, 18, 0.49, and 598.71 µSV/y, respectively; the values of 40K, 232Th, AEDE, ADR, Iγr, and AGDE were greater than the global average and UNSCEAR values. This study examines the scouring effect downstream of a type-A trapezoidal stepped Piano key weir using experimental methods. The experiments were performed on weirs, both with and without steps at the outlet keys, while considering various discharge rates, tailwater depths, and bed material sizes. The study scrutinized three unique weir configurations, each with different dimensions and step counts at the outlet keys: the first, second, and third weirs had 5, 10, and 15 steps respectively. The findings indicate that the maximum scour depths in the Piano key weirs with 5, 10, and 15 steps were, on average, 17.5%, 31%, and 19% less than those in the non-stepped weir. It was also noted that an increase in discharge and a decrease in tailwater depth and bed material size led to an increase in the maximum scour depth. Moreover, an increase in the number of steps and a decrease in the size of the bed materials resulted in a reduction in sediment ridge height. The analysis suggests that the average scour index values in the 10-stepped weir were about 21% lower compared to the non-stepped weir. The durability of blocks made by earth can be improved considerably by the addition of different stabilizers. In this work, two stabilizers have been used: cement. The elaborated specimens are evaluated by various laboratory tests, and durability is evaluated by examination of walls exposed to real climatic conditions. It has been noted that all treated walls showed no signs of deterioration after 2 years exposure in real climatic conditions even though the laboratory test conditions are more severe compared to the natural climatic conditions of the region of Algiers where this present work has been carried out. The rotation of ship propellers produces water flows that can trigger erosion and resuspension of sediment on the seabed, which damages coral reef habitats. The causal relationship between propeller rotation and coral reef damage must be known to obtain the necessary environmental constraints. This research uses bibliometric analysis and experiments to determine safe propeller rotation thresholds based on sediment rate indicators. The water flow velocity from the propeller rotation was measured through experiments in various rotations. The sedimentation rate is determined using empirical calculations based on the water flow velocity value. The analysis results determine that the rotation threshold for a propeller diameter (Dp) of 1.5 m is: (a) 120 rpm if the vertical position of the propeller axis is 0.5Dp above the seabed; (b) 230 rpm if the vertical position of the propeller axis is 1.0Dp above the seabed; and (c) 360 rpm if the vertical position of the propeller axis is ≥ 1.5Dp above the seabed. Erosion poses a significant threat to coastal and estuarine environments worldwide and is further exacerbated by anthropogenic activities and increasing coastal hazards. While conventional engineered structures, such as seawalls and revetments, are commonly employed to protect shorelines from wave impact and erosion, they can also cause detrimental environmental effects. By creating/restoring coastal habitats with engineered structures, hybrid living shorelines offer coastal protection and other co-benefits. Using aerial imagery, we studied the rates of shoreline change before and after living shoreline installation, and between living shorelines and adjacent bare shorelines in three estuaries in New South Wales, Australia. Mangroves had established behind most rock fillets and displayed a trend of increasing canopy cover with fillet age. In the first 3 years since installation, the rates of lateral shoreline change reduced from − 0.20, − 0.16, and − 0.10 m/year to − 0.03, − 0.01, and 0.06 m/year in living shorelines in Hunter, Manning, and Richmond Rivers, respectively. However, when compared to control shorelines, the effectiveness in reducing erosion varied among living shorelines with mean effect sizes of 0.04, − 0.28, and 1.74 across the three estuaries. A more positive rate of shoreline change was associated with an increasing percentage of mangrove canopy area and an increasing length of protected shoreline at wide channels. While hybrid mangrove living shorelines are a promising solution for mitigating erosion and creating habitats at an estuary-wide scale, they may also contribute to downdrift erosion, emphasising the importance of considering site-specific hydrogeomorphology and sediment movement when installing living shorelines. Soil erosion is a severe issue posing a number of adverse effects on the environment. It is a prominent hazard damaging the fertile agricultural land. Therefore, in this study, a spatio-temporal assessment of soil erosion was carried out in the Swat River Basin, Pakistan by employing the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE). The parameters of the RUSLE model are rainfall erosivity, soil erodibility, slope length and steepness, land management and support practice. These factors were developed from monthly mean rainfall data obtained from the Regional Metrology Department Peshawar, FAO soil database, land use data prepared from Landsat-5 and 8 satellite imageries, topographic data obtained from the ALOS PALSAR Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The analysis discovered that 13% of the study area experienced severe erosion. Results of the spatial distribution and vulnerability to erosion within the Swat River Basin have been categorized into different zones such as very low (59.7%), low (19.5%), moderate (5.37%), high (6.86%), and very high (5.96%). These results accentuate the necessity for mitigation measures in the study area to mitigate the loss of valuable topsoil. Morphologically diverse trace fossils belonging to different ichnogenera share similar characteristics in that their producers: 1) sequester organic-rich sediment from the seafloor, or from suspension when plenty of benthic food is available; 2) transfer it downward; 3) stow it in a burrow; and 4) utilize it later during times when benthic food availability is restricted. Organic matter delivery to the seafloor is subject to pronounced seasonal fluctuations. Storage is optimal if the cache is located in anoxic sediment and beyond the reach of competing burrowers. Since the most reactive (i.e., nutritional) organic substances become oxidized first, refractory organic matter is enriched deeper in the substrate. If, however, reactive organic matter is brought in contact with refractory organic matter, priming may take place. Priming refers to enhanced microbial remineralization of refractory organic matter, typically up to 30%. This process is especially efficient where fresh organic matter is transferred into anoxic deposits. In addition, if an open burrow is produced within anoxic sediment, microbial activity is stimulated by the steep geochemical gradient between anoxic host sediment and oxygenated water in the lumen. The microbes and/or their metabolic products may also serve as food source. Consequently, stowing behaviour is an efficient nutritional and survival strategy for animals living in settings that experience strongly fluctuating delivery of benthic food, by conserving food resources during times of plenty to be used when starving. The processes of reagent and sorption removal of iron ions from water were investigated and the efficiency of deironing was evaluated. Lime and biosorbents based on walnut shells were used through experiments. The range of iron ions concentrations from 2 to 100 mg/L was studied. The efficiency of deironing is reached maximum efficiency during biosorbtion. In order to create resource-efficient technologies, it is important to develop effective methods of sludge and spent sorbents utilisation. The sediments formed as a result of reagent and sorption purification of water from iron were utilised in the composition of cement with the consumption 3%. The effect of additives application in cement production was evaluated according to the following properties: normal density, coefficient of water separation, time of hardening, compressive strength at the age of 2 and 28 days. The objective of this research was to assess sediments contamination, provenance and metal pollution using single and complex pollution indicators. Limbe River sediment samples were analysed using Inductively Coupled Plasma—Mass Spectrometry. The Limbe River sediments exhibit high content in Fe2O3 sourced from haematization of basaltic rocks. The concentration of Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, Sr, V and Zn exceed upper continental crust and local baseline values for heavy metals. Correlation matrix analysis indicates the presence of common input sources and similar geochemical characteristics of heavy metals. Contamination factor (CF: 0.01–10.34), contamination degree (Cdeg: 14.91–36.57), pollution load index (PLI: 0.84–1.77), and nemerow integrated pollution index (NIPI: 0.2–1.7) indicates significant to high levels of contamination. The enrichment factor (EF: 0–5.67) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo: -7.55–2.59), suggests moderate to significant metal pollution of the Limbe River ecosystem, suggesting potential ecological effects. Modified hazard quotient (mHQ: 0.082–6.35) and toxic risk index (TRI: 10.49–27.43), indicates low to extreme pollution severity and high toxicity risks of heavy metals to the aquatic ecosystem fauna and flora. Primarily anthropogenic activities and secondary lithogenic provenance is attributed to sediments contamination and metals pollution. This study suggests that a greater emphasis should be placed on monitoring various provenances of metals entering the aquatic ecosystem from anthropogenic practices. The study emphasizes the significance of continual protection of aquatic ecosystem and biological resources and adaptive management. Offshore wind farms are becoming an increasingly common feature in the marine environment as a renewable energy source. There is a growing body of evidence on the effects of wind farms on the seabed and its organisms. However, an important and understudied aspect of site development is the interaction of turbine foundations on the surrounding marine environment. Structures exert significant disturbance on tides, waves and currents; these are visible as optically-distinct, elongate wakes at the sea surface with elevated suspended particulate matter. Despite this, there is uncertainty on the mechanisms that lead to the visible manifestation of wakes at turbine foundations, primarily due to a lack of direct measurements. Here, in situ measurements along with a 15- year time series of satellite images of the Thanet offshore wind farm, located within the Thames Estuary, were used to investigate the formation of visible monopile wakes, and the effects these have on the surrounding water column. We show the optically distinct wakes are near-constant at Thanet; visible in >90% of all satellite images, yet no regional change in sea surface turbidity could be attributed to wind farm construction or operation. Monopile wake in situ water samples and acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) backscatter measurements demonstrated colour change related to elevated sea surface sediment concentration. However, averaged water column measurements of suspended sediment within wakes, and upstream of monopiles, remained consistent. These measurements demonstrate that sediment was redistributed towards surface waters, rather than additional sediment becoming suspended in the wake. ADCP velocity measurements supported a mechanism of sediment lofting towards the surface, with enhanced vertically upwards flow recorded in wakes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract\nKEY POINTSFrom the late Permian to Early Triassic, the eastern part of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean was closed, and the Jinshajiang–Ailaoshan–Songma suture belt formed between the Yangtze Craton and the Indochina Block. The structural belt extends eastward to Hainan Island as the Changjiang–Qionghai fault, which controls the closure of the southern and northern parts of Hainan Island and the transformation of the sedimentary environment. This study focuses on the late Permian Nanlong Formation in Nanlong village, Dongfang County, western Hainan Island. Detrital zircon U–Pb ages from the Permian strata in southern and northern Hainan Island are used to discuss the provenance and sedimentary environment during the early and late Permian. The detrital zircon U–Pb ages from the upper Permian Nanlong Formation are 2800–900, 700–500, 500–400 and 400–320 Ma, with the majority falling into the 500–400 Ma range. The sedimentary environment on Hainan Island transitioned from early Permian semi-deep to deep-sea to late Permian coastal and shallow sea. The sediment provenance changed from a recycled orogen belt during the early Permian to a combination of recycled and arc orogen belt (Devonian–Carboniferous) during the late Permian. This reflects the closure of the east Paleo-Tethys Ocean during the late Permian that resulted in the collision and assembly of south and north Hainan Island and its relative uplift in the central part, which controlled the transition in sedimentary provenance and environment during the late Permian on Hainan Island.The sedimentary environment of Hainan Island changed from the early to late Permian.The sediment provenance of Hainan Island also changed from the early to late Permian.The closure of the east Paleo-Tethys Ocean during the late Permian led to the collision and assembly of north and south of Hainan Island. The Changjiang Estuary and Hangzhou Bay system has experienced river damming and estuarine engineering in the last decades. However, few studies focused on the shifts in its sediment dynamics due to such human activities. In this study multi-decadal development of sediment dynamics in the transitional zone of the two large estuaries was analyzed, based on the synchronous hydrographic data in the winter of 2023, 2014 and 1983. The results revealed significant changes in regional hydrodynamics and suspended sediment transport, despite the continuous good correlations between the current velocity, suspended sediment concentration (SSC), water/sediment fluxes and tidal range. Specifically, the current velocity has been decreased by 8 - 21% after 2014, mainly due to the land reclamation (implemented around 2016) with several groins stretching into deep water and altering alongshore hydrodynamics. The SSC has decreased further by 29 - 38% in addition to the significant decrease during 1983 - 2014. The SSC changes are related to the combination of river damming which induced sediment load reduction and land reclamation which enclosed a large amount of sediment. Furthermore, the sediment transport from Changjiang Estuary to Hangzhou Bay decreased by 36% - 53%, explaining the observed bed erosion in the northern bay mouth in recent years. Peaty sediments in coastal wetlands play an important role in the sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide and its belowground storage. Sediment cores are used to quantify organic matter (OM) density, estimated by multiplying the bulk density of a core segment by its OM fraction. This method can be imprecise, as repeated samples often differ widely. Recent studies have shown that sediment bulk density and OM fraction are not independent but tightly related by a function called the ideal-mixing model. Thus, the bulk density of the sediment can be directly estimated from its OM fraction. Statistical theory and simulations demonstrate that the high variance in the product estimation of OM density is the result of error propagation in the product of two functionally related variables with independent errors. Estimating OM density in wetland sediments using the ideal-mixing model is more precise than the traditionally used product estimate, especially in highly organic sediments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bay ecosystems with unique economic and ecological value are more vulnerable to heavy metal pollution than other marine ecosystems. In South Korea, rapid economic development has exacerbated heavy metal pollution in bay environments. This study analyzed concentrations of seven heavy metals and the structure of macrobenthic community in Asan Bay. Five heavy metal indices (PLI, Pn, RI, TRI, and MERMQ) were used to assess ecological risk. Additionally, spearman correlation, biota--environment matching (BIO-ENV), and redundancy analysis (RDA) were utilized to determine the influence of heavy metals on macrobenthic communities. Although average concentrations of seven heavy metals were below sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), the average concentration of Cd was close to the threshold effects level (TEL). The nemerow pollution index (Pn) and the potential ecological risk index (RI) indicated that Cd was the primary heavy metal contributing to ecological risk. Spearman correlation, BIO-ENV, and RDA indicated that heavy metals were the main environmental factors influencing macrobenthic communities in Asan Bay. However, five heavy metal indices (PLI, Pn, RI, TRI, and MERMQ) did not show a response to the macrobenthic communities. Overall, low concentrations of heavy metals have a certain negative impact on macrobenthic communities in Asan Bay. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is suffering from a substantial decline in terrestrial water storage (TWS) in exorheic basins, threatening water resources that are critical for ∼2 billion people downstream. TWS changes are commonly estimated using gravity satellites through observations of the total terrestrial mass storage (TMS) change, with an implicit assumption of a negligible contribution from sediment transport. Through long‐term (2002–2017) sediment flux observations in seven headwater basins on the TP, we reveal that the gravity satellite‐derived TMS has decreased at a rate of 3.85 ± 0.23 Gt yr−1 in the seven basins, of which 0.35 ± 0.04 Gt yr−1 is contributed by sediment transport. Neglecting this contribution leads to an overestimation of the TWS loss by 10.1 ± 1.3%, equivalent to the annual water demand of an additional 0.62 million people in the surrounding nations. Regionally, the overestimation is surprisingly high in the Indus River and Yarkant River basins, reaching up to 50.8%–77.6%. Plain Language Summary: Accurate quantification of the change in the terrestrial water storage (TWS) on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is imperative to improve the assessment of water availability that are critical for ∼2 billion people downstream. Through long‐term sediment flux observations, here we find that sediment transport makes a substantial contribution to gravity satellite‐derived TWS change in regions with a high erosion rate such as the TP, which has never been taken into consideration in previous studies. Neglecting this contribution leads to an overestimation of the TWS loss by about 10% on average for the seven headwater basins on the TP. The contribution is especially high in the Indus River and Yarkant River basins. Our findings improve the regional estimation of water availability and thus support climate adaptation and sustainable water resource management. In rivers worldwide, multiple scales of dunes coexist. It is unknown how the larger, primary dunes interact with secondary bedforms that are superimposed. We test the hypothesis that streamwise variability in the sediment flux inferred from the downstream migration of secondary bedforms explains migration of the host dune, based on bathymetric data from a lowland, sand‐bedded river. Results indicate that transport estimated from secondary bedform migration increases along the host dune stoss, eroding the stoss slope. When the superimposed bedforms disintegrate at the primary lee slopes, results indicate that all sediment transport associated to secondary bedform migration is arrested in the lee of the host dune, explaining migration of the host dune. When secondary dunes persist however, only part of the sediments transport linked to secondary dunes contributes to the migration of the host dune. This study gives novel insight into the fundamental mechanisms controlling the kinematics of compound dunes. Plain Language Summary: Dunes are undulating features that can develop on a sandy river bed. They migrate downstream as a result of sediments moving from the stoss, the upstream facing slope of the dune, to the lee, the downstream slope of the dune. Sometimes, multiple scales of dunes coexist, where trains of small dunes travel over larger dunes. In this study we investigate how two dune scales interact and how they contribute to the downstream transport of bed sediments. This is done based on a series of field campaigns in the River Waal. The results indicate that migrating secondary dunes contribute to the displacement of the host dune, the dune over which they migrating. In some cases, secondary dunes travel over the host dune stoss and disintegrate at the host dune lee, depositing sediment there. In other cases, secondary dunes travel over the full length of the host dune toward the next, downstream dune. In this case, part of the sediments transport linked to the secondary dunes contributes to the downstream displacement of the host dune, and part of the sediments are transported to the next primary dune. River bedforms and their deposits—fluvial cross strata— respond to floods. However, it is unclear if all floods are equally represented in cross strata. Here, using a series of physical experiments in which bedforms were subjected to equivalent flood magnitudes over varying durations, we demonstrate the existence of a lower bound on flood durations that are represented in cross strata. We show that the scour depths and preserved set thickness are indistinguishable from baseflow conditions when the rising‐limb duration of floods is shorter than the baseflow‐equilibrated bedform turnover timescale—time required to displace the volume of a single bedform at baseflow conditions. In contrast, scour depth and preserved set thickness distributions deviate from baseflow conditions when flood rising‐limb duration exceeds the baseflow‐equilibrated bedform turnover timescale, causing preferential preservation of falling‐limb bedform dynamics. Our work provides a previously unrecognized quantitative bound on flood durations that are represented in fluvial cross strata. It has long been hypothesized that bedforms respond to floods by changing their shape and speed. In addition, fluvial cross strata are hypothesized to record past floods, thus, providing a key window into past hydrologic variability. However, it is unclear if floods of all durations are equally likely to be represented in bedform morphology and fluvial cross strata. Here, we investigate how floods of different durations are recorded in fluvial cross strata using four physical experiments of bedform evolution. We examine changes in bedform morphology (height, length, speed) and preservation with floods of equal magnitude but varying durations and compare the results with a control experiment with steady water and sediment discharge. Our results reveal a previously unrecognized lower limit on preserved flood duration in cross strata, corresponding to the time required to move a single bedform one wavelength (turnover timescale) in baseflow conditions. Only floods with durations longer than the turnover timescale led to identifiable changes in bedform morphology and fluvial cross strata. These findings advance our ability to better interpret geological records of past floods. Massive quantities of naturally arsenic-containing sediments are excavated for construction. Chemical immobilization is applied to such excavated materials for reuse. Appropriate physicochemical properties should be understood to enhance the formation of the insoluble arsenic phases without re-leaching. The up-flow column retention test flowing 10 mg L−1 of arsenic solution was conducted to understand how the retention of arsenic and the phases of arsenic immobilized by iron sulfate heptahydrate depend on the particle size of the excavated sediment. The amount of arsenic retained on the immobilization material (particle size of 0.5 mm) during the retention test was lower for the larger particle size of the excavated sediment. However, arsenic was more stably retained on the immobilization material for the large particle sizes (1.0–2.0 and 2.0–5.0 mm) and the amount of arsenic re-leached was 12% of that in the small one (<0.5 mm). The percentages of arsenic in fraction 3 of sequential extraction increased from 45% to 68% with increasing the particle size. These results indicate that the excavated sediment with a larger particle size than that of immobilization material retains less arsenic on the immobilization material, but the arsenic phases immobilized are more stable, resulting in less arsenic re-leaching. This study suggests that the use of excavated sediment with a particle size larger than that of the immobilization material is desirable for the application of immobilization technique without re-leaching. ABSTRACT Despite the valuable palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental information provided by vertebrate tracks, those made in semi‐liquid sediments have been largely overlooked because they are assumed to be preserved as a mass of disrupted sediment and to have a low preservation potential. Nevertheless, understanding their mechanisms of formation, infilling and preservation is crucial since they could be more abundant in the fossil record than expected or be misinterpreted as other soft‐sediment deformation structures. To solve these aspects, this study analyses consecutive cross‐sections performed along a human track made by a shod foot in semi‐liquid sediments in the upper intertidal flats of the Bay of Mont‐Saint‐Michel (north‐west France) and monitored until its complete burial. These were compared with cross‐sections of tracks made in a flume tank. Cross‐sections reveal that the sediment structures associated with these tracks reflect the mechanism of their formation and infilling, and even the footstep dynamics. These structures comprise: (i) marginal rims that developed at both sides of tracks during foot penetration; (ii) upward deformation structures produced during foot withdrawal; (iii) a syn‐track infilling, which almost entirely fills the tracks during the withdrawal, formed by sediment collapsed from the track walls or by liquefied sediment; (iv) a post‐track infilling that fills the tracks completely during their subsequent flooding. This work demonstrates that these tracks have a high preservation potential in tidal settings, especially if they are made after the peak of a spring tide period, and undergo desiccation and consolidation during neap tides, which prevents their erosion and favours their burial by sediment. The identification of the above‐mentioned structures in fossil counterparts provides useful palaeoenvironmental information, because they allow discriminating these tracks from those made in sediments with less water content and from other soft‐sediment deformation structures (i.e. convolute bedding and balls‐and pillows) with which they share strong resemblances. In large and stratified lakes, substantial methane stocks are often observed within the metalimnion. The origin of the methane (CH4) accumulated in the metalimnion during stratification, which can sustain significant emissions during convective mixing, is still widely debated. While commonly attributed to the transport of methane produced anaerobically ex situ, recent evidence suggests that oxic in situ methane production could also contribute to metalimnetic methane peaks. Here, we assessed the origin, that is, pelagic CH4 production or transport of sublittoral CH4 through the interflow, of metalimnetic methane in Lake Geneva, the largest lake in Western Europe. Microbial diversity data do not support the hypothesis of oxic methane production in the metalimnion. In contrast, both spatial and temporal surveys of methane show that maxima occur at depths and sites most affected by the Rhône River inflow. Methane δ13C values point to an anaerobic sublittoral methane source, within a biogeochemical hotspot close to the river delta region, and an efficient transport across several kilometers in a vertically well‐constrained metalimnion. Our current findings emphasize the indirect role of river interflows for the long‐range transport of CH4 produced in sediment biogeochemical hotspots, even for large lakes where sublittoral habitats represent a fairly limited fraction of the lake volume. Affected by climatic factors and human activities, the conditions of the sediment deposition of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in the upper Yangtze River have undergone significant changes, the understandings of the sedimentation in TGR and its factors remain unclear. In this paper, the regime for sediment deposition in TGR from 2003 to 2017 is analyzed based on field data, its influence factors are discussed, and the empirical formulas governing the relationships are presented. The results show that the sedimentation pattern of the TGR is discontinuous and that the perennial inundated area is the key sedimentation area, while the reaches of Xiangxizhen, Wushan, Fengjie, Wanxian, Huanghuacheng, Lanzhuba, and Tunaozi are the main deposition reaches in the reservoir, with the same characteristics of wider cross-sections. Sediment deposition in the TGR is affected by the incoming water and sediment, the operation rule of the reservoir, and by the characteristics of different reaches. Compared with the factors influencing the total sediment trapping ratio of the reservoir, local reach conditions are also the main factors influencing the sediment trapping ratio of the reaches due to the difference of sediment carrying capacity between wider reach and narrow reach. The sediment trapping ratios for reservoir scale and reach scale can be good indicators that reflect sedimentation in the TGR; the calculated sediment trapping ratios agree well with field observations. With the continuous construction and operation of the main and tributary reservoirs in the upper Yangtze River, the existing sedimentation regime of the TGR will persist for many years.
