We present a novel Bayesian framework to decompose the posterior predictive variance in a fitted Generalized Additive Mixed Model (GAMM) into explained and unexplained components. This decomposition enables a rigorous definition of Bayesian $R^{2}$. We show that the new definition aligns with the intuitive Bayesian $R^{2}$ proposed by Gelman, Goodrich, Gabry, and Vehtari (2019) [\emph{The American Statistician}, \textbf{73}(3), 307-309], but extends its applicability to a broader class of models. Furthermore, we introduce a partial Bayesian $R^{2}$ to quantify the contribution of individual model terms to the explained variation in the posterior predictions

GWnext 2024 was a meeting held in the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University in March $4^\text{th} - 8^\text{th}$, 2024. In the meeting researchers at different career stages -- with a particular focus on early career scientists -- working on the different aspects of gravitational wave (GW) astronomy gathered to discuss the current status as well as prospects of the field. The meeting was divided into three core sessions: Astrophysics, GW Theory, and Detection. Each session consisted of introductory talks and extended discussion sessions. Moreover, there was a poster session where students could present their results. In this paper, we summarize the results presented during the meeting and present the most important outcomes.

Binary black holes (BBHs) born from the evolution of Population III (Pop. III) stars are one of the main high-redshift targets for next-generation ground-based gravitational-wave (GW) detectors. Their predicted initial mass function and lack of metals make them the ideal progenitors of black holes above the upper edge of the pair-instability mass gap, i.e. with a mass higher than $\approx{}134$ (241) M$_\odot$ for stars that become (do not become) chemically homogeneous during their evolution. Here, we investigate the effects of cluster dynamics on the mass function of BBHs born from Pop. III stars, by considering the main uncertainties on Pop. III star mass function, orbital properties of binary systems, star cluster's mass and disruption time. In our dynamical models, at least $\sim$5% and up to 100% BBH mergers in Pop. III star clusters have primary mass $m_1$ above the upper edge of the pair-instability mass gap. In contrast, only $\lesssim {} 3$% isolated BBH mergers have primary mass above the gap, unless their progenitors evolved as chemically homogeneous stars. The lack of systems with primary and/or secondary mass inside the gap defines a zone of avoidance with sharp boundaries in the primary mass - mass ratio plane. Finally, we estimate the merger rate density of BBHs and, in the most optimistic case, we find a maximum of $\mathcal{R}\approx200\,{\rm Gpc^{-3}\,yr^{-1}}$ at $z\sim15$ for BBHs formed via dynamical capture. For comparison, the merger rate density of isolated Pop. III BBHs is $\mathcal{R}\leq{}10\,{\rm Gpc^{-3}\,yr^{-1}}$, for the same model of Pop. Gaia BH3 is the first observed dormant black hole (BH) with a mass of $\approx{30}$ M$_\odot$ and represents the first confirmation that such massive BHs are associated with metal-poor stars. Here, we explore the isolated binary formation channel for Gaia BH3 focusing on the old and metal-poor stellar population of the Milky Way halo. We use the MIST stellar models and our open-source population synthesis code SEVN to evolve $5.6 \times 10^8$ binaries exploring 20 sets of parameters. We find that systems like Gaia BH3 form preferentially from binaries initially composed of a massive star ($40-60$ M$_\odot$) and a low mass companion ($<1$ M$_\odot$) in a wide ($P>10^3$ days) and eccentric orbit ($e>0.6$). Such progenitor binary stars do not undergo any Roche-lobe overflow episode during their entire evolution, so that the final orbital properties of the BH-star system are determined at the core collapse of the primary star. Low natal kicks ($\lesssim$ 10~km/s) significantly favour the formation of Gaia BH3-like systems, but high velocity kicks up to $\approx 220$ km/s are also allowed. We estimate the formation efficiency for Gaia BH3-like systems in old ($t>10$ Gyr) and metal-poor ($Z<0.01$) populations to be $\sim 4 \times 10^{-8}$ M$_\odot^{-1}$ (for our fiducial model), representing $\sim 3\%$ of the whole simulated BH-star population. We expect up to $\approx 4000$ BH-star systems in the Galactic halo formed through isolated evolution, of which $\approx 100$ are compatible with Gaia BH3-like. Given the density profile of the Galactic halo we do not expect more than one at the observed distance of Gaia BH3. Our models show that, even if it was born inside a stellar cluster, Gaia BH3 is compatible with a primordial binary star that escaped from its parent cluster without experiencing significant dynamical interactions., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. The Lunar Gravitational-wave Antenna (LGWA) is a proposed array of next-generation inertial sensors to monitor the response of the Moon to gravitational waves (GWs). Given the size of the Moon and the expected noise produced by the lunar seismic background, the LGWA would be able to observe GWs from about 1 mHz to 1 Hz. This would make the LGWA the missing link between space-borne detectors like LISA with peak sensitivities around a few millihertz and proposed future terrestrial detectors like Einstein Telescope or Cosmic Explorer. In this article, we provide a first comprehensive analysis of the LGWA science case including its multi-messenger aspects and lunar science with LGWA data. We also describe the scientific analyses of the Moon required to plan the LGWA mission.

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is the first scientific endeavour to detect and study gravitational waves from space. LISA will survey the sky for Gravitational Waves in the 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz frequency band which will enable the study of a vast number of objects ranging from Galactic binaries and stellar mass black holes in the Milky Way, to distant massive black-hole mergers and the expansion of the Universe. Hierarchical black hole (BH) mergers are one of the most straightforward mechanisms to produce BHs inside and above the pair-instability mass gap. Here, we investigate the impact of globular cluster (GC) evolution on hierarchical mergers, and we account for the uncertainties related to BH mass pairing functions on the predicted primary BH mass, mass ratio and spin distribution. We find that the evolution of the host GC quenches the hierarchical BH assembly already at the third generation, mainly due to cluster expansion powered by a central BH sub-system. Hierarchical mergers match the primary BH mass distribution from GW events for $m_1 > 50 \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, regardless of the assumed BH pairing function. At lower masses, however, different pairing functions lead to dramatically different predictions on the primary BH mass merger rate density. We find that the primary BH mass distribution evolves with redshift, with a larger contribution from mergers with $m_1 \geq 30 \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ for $z\geq{}2$. Finally, we calculate the mixing fraction of BBHs from GCs and isolated binary systems. Our predictions are very sensitive to the spins, which favor a large fraction ($>0.6$) of BBHs born in GCs, in order to reproduce misaligned spin observations., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 1 table. The evolution of dense star clusters is followed by direct high-accuracy N-body simulation. The problem is to first order a gravitational N-body problem, but stars evolve due to astrophysics and the more massive ones form black holes or neutron stars as compact remnants at the end of their life. After including updates of stellar evolution of massive stars and for the relativistic treatment of black hole binaries we find the growth of intermediate mass black holes and we show that in star clusters binary black hole mergers in the so-called pair creation supernova (PSN) gap occur easily. Compact binary mergers forming in star clusters may exhibit distinctive features that can be used to identify them among observed gravitational-wave (GW) sources. Such features likely depend on the host cluster structure and the physics of massive star evolution. Here, we dissect the population of compact binary mergers in the \textsc{Dragon-II} simulation database, a suite of 19 direct $N$-body models representing dense star clusters with up to $10^6$ stars and $<33\%$ of stars in primordial binaries. We find a substantial population of black hole binary (BBH) mergers, some of them involving an intermediate-mass BH (IMBH), and a handful mergers involving a stellar BH and either a neutron star (NS) or a white dwarf (WD). Primordial binary mergers, $\sim 30\%$ of the whole population, dominate ejected mergers. Dynamical mergers, instead, dominate the population of in-cluster mergers and are systematically heavier than primordial ones. Around $20\%$ of \textsc{Dragon-II} mergers are eccentric in the LISA band and $5\%$ in the LIGO band. We infer a mean cosmic merger rate of $\mathcal{R}\sim 12(4.4)(1.2)$ yr$^{-1}$ Gpc$^3$ for BBHs, NS-BH, and WD-BH binary mergers, respectively, and discuss the prospects for multimessenger detection of WD-BH binaries with LISA. We model the rate of pair-instability supernovae (PISNe) in star clusters and find that surveys with a limiting magnitude $m_{\rm bol}=25$ can detect $\sim 1-15$ yr$^{-1}$ PISNe. Comparing these estimates with future observations could help to pin down the impact of massive star evolution on the mass spectrum of compact stellar objects in star clusters., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables. The processes that govern the formation of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) in dense stellar clusters are still unclear. Here, we discuss the role of stellar mergers, star-BH interactions and accretion, as well as BH binary (BBH) mergers in seeding and growing IMBHs in the \textsc{Dragon-II} simulation database, a suite of 19 direct $N$-body models representing dense clusters with up to $10^6$ stars. \textsc{Dragon-II} IMBHs have typical masses of $m_{\rm IMBH} = (100-380)$ M$_\odot$ and relatively large spins $\chi_{\rm IMBH} > 0.6$. We find a link between the IMBH formation mechanism and the cluster structure. In clusters denser than $3\times 10^5$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-3}$, the collapse of massive star collision products represents the dominant IMBH formation process, leading to the formation of heavy IMBHs ($m_{\rm IMBH} > 200$ M$_\odot$), possibly slowly rotating, that form over times $<5$ Myr and grow further via stellar accretion and mergers in just $<30$ Myr. BBH mergers are the dominant IMBH formation channel in less dense clusters, for which we find that the looser the cluster, the longer the formation time ($10-300$ Myr) and the larger the IMBH mass, although remaining within $200$ M$_\odot$. Strong dynamical scatterings and relativistic recoil efficiently eject all IMBHs in \textsc{Dragon-II} clusters, suggesting that IMBHs in this type of cluster are unlikely to grow beyond a few $10^2$ M$_\odot$., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, 1 appendix. We present the first results of the \textsc{Dragon-II} simulations, a suite of 19 $N$-body simulations of star clusters with up to $10^6$ stars, with up to $33\%$ of them initially paired in binaries. In this work, we describe the main evolution of the clusters and their compact objects (COs). All \textsc{Dragon-II} clusters form in their centre a black hole (BH) subsystem with a density $10-100$ times larger than the stellar density, with the cluster core containing $50-80\%$ of the whole BH population. In all models, the BH average mass steeply decreases as a consequence of BH burning, reaching values $\langle m_{\rm BH}\rangle < 15$ M$_\odot$ within $10-30$ relaxation times. Generally, our clusters retain only BHs lighter than $30$ M$_\odot$ over $30$ relaxation times. Looser clusters retain a higher binary fraction, because in such environments binaries are less likely disrupted by dynamical encounters. We find that BH-main sequence star binaries have properties similar to recently observed systems. Double CO binaries (DCOBs) ejected from the cluster exhibit larger mass ratios and heavier primary masses than ejected binaries hosting a single CO (SCOBs). Ejected SCOBs have BH masses $m_{\rm BH} = 3-20$ M$_\odot$, definitely lower than those in DCOBs ($m_{\rm BH} = 10-100$ M$_\odot$)., Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, 4 tables. Comments welcome. $Gaia$ BH1, the first quiescent black hole (BH) detected from $Gaia$ data, poses a challenge to most binary evolution models: its current mass ratio is $\approx{0.1}$, and its orbital period seems to be too long for a post-common envelope system and too short for a non-interacting binary system. Here, we explore the hypothesis that $Gaia$ BH1 formed through dynamical interactions in a young star cluster (YSC). We study the properties of BH-main sequence (MS) binaries formed in YSCs with initial mass $3\times{}10^2-3\times{}10^4$ M$_\odot$ at solar metallicity, by means of $3.5\times{}10^4$ direct $N$-body simulations coupled with binary population synthesis. For comparison, we also run a sample of isolated binary stars with the same binary population synthesis code used in the dynamical models. We find that BH-MS systems that form via dynamical exchanges populate the region corresponding to the main orbital properties of $Gaia$ BH1 (period, eccentricity, and masses). In contrast, none of our isolated binary systems matches the orbital period and MS mass of $Gaia$ BH1. Our best matching $Gaia$ BH1--like system forms via repeated dynamical exchanges and collisions involving the BH progenitor star, before it undergoes core collapse. The infall and merger scenario of massive clusters in the Milky Way's potential well, as one of the Milky Way formation mechanisms, is reexamined to understand how the stars of the merging clusters are redistributed during and after the merger process using, for the first time, simulations with a high resolution concentrated in the 300 pc around the Galactic center. We adopted simulations developed in the framework of the "Modelling the Evolution of Galactic Nuclei" (MEGaN) project. We compared the evolution of representative clusters in the mass and concentration basis in the vicinity of a supermassive black hole. We used the spatial distribution, density profile, and the $50\%$ Lagrange radius (half mass radius) as indicators along the complete simulation to study the evolutionary shape in physical and velocity space and the final fate of these representative clusters. We detect that the least massive clusters are quickly (<10 Myr) destroyed. Instead, the most massive clusters have a long evolution, showing variations in the morphology, especially after each passage close to the supermassive black hole. The deformation of the clusters depends on the concentration, with general deformations for the least concentrated clusters and outer strains for the more concentrated ones. At the end of the simulation, a dense concentration of stars belonging to the clusters is formed. The particles that belong to the most massive and most concentrated clusters are concentrated in the innermost regions, meaning that the most massive and concentrated clusters contribute with a more significant fraction of particles to the final concentration, which suggests that the population of stars of the nuclear star cluster formed through this mechanism comes from massive clusters rather than low-mass globular clusters., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Eccentric mergers are a signature of the dynamical formation channel of binary black holes (BBHs) in dense stellar environments and hierarchical triple systems. Here, we investigate the formation of eccentric mergers via binary-single interactions by means of $2.5\times10^{5}$ direct $\textit{N}$-body simulations. Our simulations include post-Newtonian terms up to the 2.5th order and model the typical environment of young (YSCs), globular (GCs), and nuclear star clusters (NSCs). Around $0.6\%$ ($1\%$) of our mergers in NSCs (GCs) have an eccentricity ${>0.1}$ when the emitted gravitational wave frequency is 10 Hz in the source frame, while in YSCs this fraction rises to $1.6\%$. Approximately $\sim63\%$ of these mergers are produced by chaotic, resonant interactions where temporary binaries are continuously formed and destroyed, while $\sim31\%$ arise from an almost direct collision of two black holes (BHs). Lastly, $\sim 6\%$ of these eccentric mergers occur in temporary hierarchical triples. We find that binaries undergoing a flyby generally develop smaller tilt angles with respect to exchanges. This result challenges the idea that perfectly isotropic spin orientations are produced by dynamics. The environment dramatically affects BH retention: $0\%$, $3.1\%$, and $19.9\%$ of all the remnant BHs remain in YSCs, GCs, and NSCs, respectively. The fraction of massive BHs also depends on the host cluster properties, with pair-instability ($60\leq\,$M$_{\rm BH}$/M$_{\odot}\leq$100) and intermediate-mass (M$_{\rm BH}\geq$100$\,$M$_{\odot}$) BHs accounting for approximately $\sim44\%$ and $1.6\%$ of the mergers in YSCs, $\sim33\%$ and $0.7\%$ in GCs, and $\sim28\%$ and $0.4\%$ in NSCs, respectively., Comment: Astronomy & Astrophysics, Volume 683, Number A186

Galactic nuclei harbouring a central supermassive black hole (SMBH), possibly surrounded by a dense nuclear cluster (NC), represent extreme environments which house a complex interplay of many physical processes that uniquely affect stellar formation, evolution, and dynamics. The discovery of gravitational waves (GW) emitted by merging black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs), funnelled a huge amount of work focused on understanding how compact object binaries (COBs) can pair-up and merge together. Here, we review from a theoretical standpoint how different mechanisms concur to the formation, evolution, and merger of COBs around quiescent SMBHs and active galactic nuclei (AGNs), summarizing the main predictions for current and future (GW) detections and outlining the possible features that can clearly mark a galactic nuclei origin., Comment: 73 pages, 16 Figures, 2 Tables. In this work, we investigate the black hole (BH) population of globular clusters (GCs) in Milky Way- (MW) and Andromeda- (M31) like galaxies. We combine the population synthesis code MASinGa and the MOCCA-Survey Database I to infer the properties of GCs harbouring a BH subsystem (BHS), an IMBH, or neither of those. We find that the typical number of GCs with a BHS, an IMBH, or none become comparable in the galactic outskirts, whilst the inner galactic regions are dominated by GCs without a significant dark component. Our models suggest that GCs harbouring a BHS are slightly heavier and with larger half-mass radii compared to the overall population. We retrieve the properties of binary BHs (BBHs) that have either merged in the last 3 Gyr or survived in their parent cluster until present-day. We find that around 80\% of the merging BBHs form due to dynamical interactions while the remaining originate from evolution of primordial binaries. We infer a merger rate for BBHs in the local Universe of $1.0-23\,\,\rm{yr^{-1}\,Gpc^{-3}}$, depending on the adopted assumptions. We find around 100-240 BBHs survive until present-day and are mostly concentrated in the inner few kpc of the galaxy. We estimate also the number of BHs transported into the galactic nucleus by infalling star clusters, finding around 1,000-3,000 BHs and 100-200 BBHs are transported over a time span of 12 Gyr. This enables us to constrains the total amount of BHs and BBHs binaries lurking in nuclear star cluster, i.e. $N_{BHs}=(1.4-2.2)\times10^4$ and $N_{BBHs}=700-1,100$., Comment: 18 pages,15 figures

A comprehensive study of the co-evolution of globular cluster systems (GCS) in galaxies requires the ability to model both the large scale dynamics (0.01 - 10 kpc) regulating their orbital evolution, and the small scale dynamics (sub-pc - AU) regulating the internal dynamics of each globular cluster (GC). In this work we present a novel method that combine semi-analytic models of GCS with fully self-consistent Monte Carlo models to simultaneously evolve large GCSs. We use the population synthesis code MASinGa and the MOCCA-Survey Database I to create synthetic GC populations aimed at representing the observed features of GCs in the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31). Our procedure enables us to recover the spatial and mass distribution of GCs in such galaxies, and to constrain the amount of mass that GCs left either in the halo as dispersed debris, or in the galactic centre, where they can contribute to the formation of a nuclear star cluster (NSC) and can bring stellar and possibly intermediate mass black holes there. The final masses reported by our simulations are of a few order of magnitudes smaller than the observed values. These differences show that mass build-up of a NSC and central BHs in galaxies like MW and M31 cannot be solely explained by the infalling GC scenario. This build-up is likely to depend on the interplay between interactions and mergers of infalling GCs and gas. We present results from a suite of eight direct N-body simulations, performed with \textsc{Nbody6++GPU}, representing realistic models of rotating star clusters with up to $1.1\times 10^5$ stars. Our models feature primordial (hard) binaries, a continuous mass spectrum, differential rotation, and tidal mass loss induced by the overall gravitational field of the host galaxy. We explore the impact of rotation and stellar evolution on the star cluster dynamics. In all runs for rotating star clusters we detect a previously predicted mechanism: an initial phase of violent relaxation followed by the so-called gravogyro catastrophe. We find that the gravogyro catastrophe reaches a finite amplitude, which depends in strength on the level of the bulk rotation, and then levels off. After this phase the angular momentum is transferred from high-mass to low-mass particles in the cluster (both stars and compact objects). Simultaneously, the system becomes gravothermally unstable and collapses, thus undergoing the so-called gravothermal-gravogyro catastrophe. Comparing models with and without stellar evolution, we find an interesting difference. When stellar evolution is not taken into account, the whole process proceeds at a faster pace. The population of heavy objects tend to form a triaxial structure that rotates in the cluster centre. When stellar evolution is taken into account, we find that such a {\it rotating bar} is populated by stellar black holes and their progenitors. The triaxial structure becomes axisymmetric over time, but we also find that the models without stellar evolution suffer repeated gravogyro catastrophes as sufficient angular momentum and mass are removed by the tidal field., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, Accepted by MNRAS

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy, and, as such, it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and space-born instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA's first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed; ultracompact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or intermediate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help making progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with upcoming studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. This review is intended to be a starting point for using LISA as a new discovery tool for understanding our Universe.

We report on the systematic analysis of the X-ray observations of the ultra-luminous X-ray source XMMU J122939.7+075333 located in the globular cluster RZ 2109 in the Virgo galaxy NGC 4472. The inclusion of observations and time intervals ignored in previous works and the careful selection of extraction regions and energy bands have allowed us to identify new flaring episodes, in addition to the ones that made it one of the best black hole candidates in globular clusters. Although most observations are too short and sparse to recognize a regular pattern, the spacing of the three most recent X-ray flares is compatible with a ~34 hours recurrence time. If confirmed by future observations, such behavior, together with the soft spectrum of the X-ray flares, would be strikingly similar to the quasi-periodic eruptions recently discovered in galactic nuclei. Following one of the possible interpretations of these systems and of a peculiar class of extra-galactic X-ray transients, we explore the possibility that XMMU J122939.7+075333 might be powered by the partial disruption of a white dwarf by an intermediate mass (M~700 Msun) black hole., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The current interpretation of LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA data suggests that the primary mass function of merging binary black holes (BBHs) at redshift $z\lesssim 1$ contains multiple structures, while spins are relatively low. Theoretical models of BBH formation in different environments can provide a key to interpreting the population of observed mergers, but they require the simultaneous treatment of stellar evolution and dynamics, galaxy evolution, and general relativity. We present \texttt{B-POP}, a population synthesis tool to model BBH mergers formed in the field or via dynamical interactions in young, globular, and nuclear clusters. Using \texttt{B-POP}, we explore how BH formation channels, star cluster evolution, hierarchical mergers, and natal BH properties affect the population of BBH mergers. We find that the primary mass distribution of BBH mergers extends beyond $M_1 \simeq 200\,{}$ M$_\odot$, and the effective spin parameter distribution hints at different natal spins for single and binary BHs. Observed BBHs can be interpreted as members of a mixed population comprised of $\sim 34\% \,{}(66\%)$ isolated (dynamical) BBHs, with the latter likely dominating at redshift $z>1$. Hierarchical mergers constitute the $4.6-7.9\%$ of all mergers in the reference model, dominating the primary mass distribution beyond $M_1 > 65\,{}$ M$_\odot$. The inclusion of cluster mass-loss and expansion causes an abrupt decrease in the probability for mergers beyond the third generation to occur. Considering observational biases, we find that $2.7-7.5\%$ of mock mergers involve intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) seeds formed via stellar collisions. The growing population of binary black holes (BBHs) observed by gravitational wave detectors is a potential Rosetta stone for understanding their formation channels. Here, we use an upgraded version of our semi-analytic codes {\sc fastcluster} and {\sc cosmo$\mathcal{R}$ate} to investigate the cosmic evolution of four different BBH populations: isolated BBHs and dynamically formed BBHs in nuclear star clusters (NSCs), globular clusters (GCs), and young star clusters (YSCs). With our approach, we can study different channels assuming the same stellar and binary input physics. We find that the merger rate density of BBHs in GCs and NSCs is barely affected by stellar metallicity ($Z$), while the rate of isolated BBHs changes wildly with $Z$. BBHs in YSCs behave in an intermediate way between isolated and GC/NSC BBHs. The local merger rate density of Nth-generation black holes (BHs), obtained by summing up hierarchical mergers in GCs, NSCs and YSCs, ranges from $\sim{1}$ to $\sim{4}$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ and is mostly sensitive to the spin parameter. We find that the mass function of primary BHs evolves with redshift in GCs and NSCs, becoming more top-heavy at higher $z$. In contrast, the primary BH mass function almost does not change with redshift in YSCs and in the field. This signature of the BH mass function has relevant implications for Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer. We present direct N-body simulations, carried out with Nbody6++GPU, of young and compact low metallicity star clusters with $1.1\times 10^5$ stars, a velocity dispersion of $\sim$ 10 $\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$, a half mass radius $R_h=0.6$ pc, and a binary fraction of $10\%$ including updated evolution models for stellar winds and pair-instability supernovae (PISNe). Within the first tens of megayears of evolution, each cluster hosts several black hole (BH) merger events which nearly cover the complete mass range of primary and secondary BH masses for current LIGO/Virgo/Kagra gravitational wave detections. The importance of gravitational recoil is estimated statistically. We present several possible formation paths of massive BHs above the assumed lower PISNe mass-gap limit ($45 M_\odot$) into the intermediate-mass BH (IMBH) regime ($> 100 M_\odot$) which include collisions of stars and BHs as well as the direct collapse of stellar merger remnants with low mass cores. The stellar evolution updates result in the early formation of higher mass stellar BHs than for the previous model. The resulting higher collision rates with massive stars support the rapid formation of massive BHs. For models assuming a high accretion efficiency for star-BH mergers, we present a first-generation formation scenario for GW190521-like events, a merger of two BHs in the PISN mass-gap, which is dominated by star-BH mergers. This IMBH formation path is independent of gravitational recoil and therefore conceivable in dense stellar systems with low escape velocities. One simulated cluster even forms an IMBH binary (153$M_\odot$,173$M_\odot$) which is expected to merge within a Hubble time.

The science objectives of the LISA mission have been defined under the implicit assumption of a 4 yr continuous data stream. Based on the performance of LISA Pathfinder, it is now expected that LISA will have a duty cycle of $\approx 0.75$, which would reduce the effective span of usable data to 3 yr. This paper reports the results of a study by the LISA Science Group, which was charged with assessing the additional science return of increasing the mission lifetime. We explore various observational scenarios to assess the impact of mission duration on the main science objectives of the mission. We find that the science investigations most affected by mission duration concern the search for seed black holes at cosmic dawn, as well as the study of stellar-origin black holes and of their formation channels via multi-band and multi-messenger observations. GW190521 is the most massive binary black hole (BBH) merger observed to date, and its primary component lies in the pair-instability (PI) mass gap. Here, we investigate the formation of GW190521-like systems via three-body encounters in young massive star clusters. We performed 2$\times10^5$ simulations of binary-single interactions between a BBH and a massive $\geq{60}\,$M$_{\odot}$ black hole (BH), including post-Newtonian terms up to the $2.5$ order and a prescription for relativistic kicks. In our initial conditions, we take into account the possibility of forming BHs in the PI mass gap via stellar collisions. If we assume that first-generation BHs have low spins, $\sim{0.17}\%$ of all the simulated BBH mergers have component masses, effective and precessing spin, and remnant mass and spin inside the $90\%$ credible intervals of GW190521. Seven of these systems are first-generation exchanged binaries, while five are second-generation BBHs. We estimate a merger rate density $\mathcal{R}_{\rm GW190521}\sim{0.03}\,$Gpc$^{-3}\,$yr$^{-1}$ for GW190521-like binaries formed via binary-single interactions in young star clusters. This rate is extremely sensitive to the spin distribution of first-generation BBHs. We present the implementation of updated stellar evolution recipes in the codes \texttt{Nbody6++GPU, MOCCA} and \texttt{McLuster}. We test them through numerical simulations of star clusters containing $1.1\times 10^5$ stars (with $2.0\times 10^4$ in primordial hard binaries) performing high-resolution direct $N$-body (\texttt{Nbody6++GPU}) and Monte-Carlo (\texttt{MOCCA}) simulations to an age of 10~Gyr. We compare models implementing either delayed or core-collapse supernovae mechanisms, a different mass ratio distribution for binaries, and white dwarf natal kicks enabled/disabled. Compared to \texttt{Nbody6++GPU}, the \texttt{MOCCA} models appear to be denser, with a larger scatter in the remnant masses, and a lower binary fraction on average. The \texttt{MOCCA} models produce more black holes (BHs) and helium white dwarfs (WDs), whilst \texttt{Nbody6++GPU} models are characterised by a much larger amount of WD-WD binaries. The remnant kick velocity and escape speed distributions are similar for the BHs and neutron stars (NSs), and some NSs formed via electron-capture supernovae, accretion-induced collapse or merger-induced collapse escape the cluster in all simulations. The escape speed distributions for the WDs, on the other hand, are very dissimilar. The LIGO-Virgo-Kagra collaboration (LVC) discovered recently GW190521, a gravitational wave (GW) source associated with the merger between two black holes (BHs) with mass $66$ M$_\odot$ and $>85$ M$_\odot$. GW190521 represents the first BH binary (BBH) merger with a primary mass falling in the "upper mass-gap" and the first leaving behind a $\sim 150$ M$_\odot$ remnant. So far, the LVC reported the discovery of four further mergers having a total mass $>100$ M$_\odot$, i.e. in the intermediate-mass black holes (IMBH) mass range. Here, we discuss results from a series of 80 $N$-body simulations of young massive clusters (YMCs) that implement relativistic corrections to follow compact object mergers. We discover the development of a GW190521-like system as the result of a 3rd-generation merger, and four IMBH-BH mergers with total mass $~(300-350)$ M$_\odot$. We show that these IMBH-BH mergers are low-frequency GW sources detectable with LISA and DECIGO out to redshift $z=0.01-0.1$ and $z>100$, and we discuss how their detection could help unravelling IMBH natal spins. For the GW190521 test case, we show that the 3rd-generation merger remnant has a spin and effective spin parameter that matches the $90\%$ credible interval measured for GW190521 better than a simpler double merger and comparably to a single merger. Due to GW recoil kicks, we show that retaining the products of these mergers require birth-sites with escape velocities $\gtrsim 50-100$ km s$^{-1}$, values typically attained in galactic nuclei and massive clusters with steep density profiles., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, 2 Appendix.
