Bacillus salis strain ES3 T (= CSUR P1478 = DSM 100598) is the type strain of B. salis sp. nov. It is an aerobic, Gram-positive, moderately halophilic, motile and spore-forming bacterium. It was isolated from commercial table salt as part of a broad culturomics study aiming to maximize the culture conditions for the in-depth exploration of halophilic bacteria in salty food. Here we describe the phenotypic characteristics of this isolate, its complete genome sequence and annotation, together with a comparison with closely related bacteria. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated 97.5% similarity with Bacillus aquimaris, the closest species. The 8 329 771 bp long genome (one chromosome, no plasmids) exhibits a G+C content of 39.19%. It is composed of 18 scaffolds with 29 contigs. Of the 8303 predicted genes, 8109 were protein-coding genes and 194 were RNAs. A total of 5778 genes (71.25%) were assigned a putative function.

We report the isolation of three bacterial strains that could not be identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry screening. ' Gracilibacillus phocaeensis ' sp. nov., ' Sediminibacillus massiliensis ' sp. nov. and ' Virgibacillus ndiopensis ' sp. nov. are halophilic species isolated from salty human stools by culturomics.

We report the main characteristics of 'Bacillus dakarensis' P3515 T sp. nov., 'Bacillus sinesaloumensis' P3516 T sp. nov., 'Gracilibacillus timonensis' P2481 T sp. nov., 'Halobacillus massiliensis' P3554 T sp. nov., 'Lentibacillus massiliensis' P3089 T sp. nov., 'Oceanobacillus senegalensis' P3587 T sp. nov., 'Oceanobacillus timonensis' P3532 T sp. nov., 'Virgibacillus dakarensis' P3469 T sp. nov. and 'Virgibacillus marseillensis' P3610 T sp. nov., that were isolated in 2016 from salty stool samples (≥1.7% NaCl) from healthy Senegalese living at Dielmo and N'diop, two villages in Senegal.

We report here the main characteristics of 'Halomonas massiliensis' strain Marseille-P2426(T) (CSUR P2426), a new species of the Halomonas genus that was isolated from the stool sample of a healthy 24-year-old Senegalese man.

We propose the main phenotypic characteristics and the complete genome sequence and annotation of Planococcus massiliensis strain ES2(T) (= CSUR P1103 = DSM 28915), the type strain of P. massiliensis sp. nov., isolated from a faeces sample collected from a healthy Senegalese man. It is an aerobic, Gram-positive, moderately halophilic, motile and rod-shaped bacterium. The 3 357 017 bp long genome exhibits a G+C content of 46.0% and contains 3357 protein-coding genes and 48 RNA genes.

TiO2 particles were prepared by sol-gel method alone and by sol-gel method combined with hydrothermal treatment. The structural and photocatalytic properties of the two series of photocatalysts were compared. XRD studies revealed that rutilization was faster in the series of photocatalysts, which had been additionally subjected to a hydrothermal process (SG-HT). The hydrothermally treated photocatalysts also displayed a higher specific surface area than those which had only been synthesized using the sol-gel process (SG) and subjected to low calcination temperatures of up to 873 K, while this tendency was inverted at higher temperatures. In accordance with the above observation, the hydrothermally treated series of photocatalysts had a lower particle size than the SG series calcined immediately after the sol-gel process up to 873 K, with this relation being inverted for the highest two temperatures which were studied (973 K and 1023 K) and which saw the commencement of rutilization. Increases in average particle size were observed for both series, with a polyhedral morphology seen as calcination temperature rose. FTIR studies highlighted the presence of the band at 2351 cm(-1) in the SG-HT photocatalysts, characteristic of surface-adsorbed CO2. This was not seen in the SG or P25 photocatalysts. In terms of photoreactivity, the best photocatalyst in the SG-HT series was that calcined at 923 K and in the SG series at 1023 K (SG-1023). Comparing these two photocatalysts and the commercial P25 photocatalyst, SG-1023 was found to be the most photoactive in both the photodegradation and the mineralization of phenol., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Objective: We conducted this study to genetically characterize dual infection in individuals demonstrating a dual serological profile., Methods: All subjects were first evaluated by immunoblot for antibody reactivity to the major viral antigens for HIV-1 and HIV-2. Sera were judged to be dual-seropositive if they reacted with strong and equal intensity with the envelope antigens of both HIV-1 and HIV-2 and were confirmed with type-specific recombinant env peptides. We used nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify proviral gag and env sequence from peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) DNA from HIV-1- and HIV-2-infected individuals. Positive amplification was detected after Southern blot hybridization., Results: Plasmid dilution and mixing showed equivalent sensitivity of HIV-1 and HIV-2 primers that was not altered by heterologous target sequences. The DNA PCR showed 100% sensitivity and specificity for detection of monotypic HIV infection. Serologically defined HIV-dual reactives were evaluated by this assay, with 100% detection in female sex workers (21 out of 21), but only 38.5% detection (five out of 13) in hospitalized patients; all being HIV-1 positive only. The lack of HIV-2 proviral signal was significantly correlated with low CD4+ lymphocyte counts (Pvalue = 0.04)., Conclusion: The results suggest that HIV dual infection may not be a static condition. Levels of HIV-2 may decrease with disease progression or sequester in tissue reservoirs; our results may also suggest that HIV-1 effectively overgrows HIV-2 in the dually exposed host individual.
