- Abstract
We have measured Bhabha scattering at cms energies of 9.4, 13, 17, 22, 27.5, 30.0, and 31.6 GeV and the reactione
+ e- →μ+ μ- at 9.4 GeV. The experiment covers spacelike momentum transfers up to −850 GeV2 and timelike momentum transfers up to 1,000 GeV2 . We obtain good agreement with QED comparing differential cross sections (measured between 35° and 145°), acoplanarity distributions and the energy dependence (for Bhabha scattering). Defining possible modifications of QED in a model independent way we obtain stringent limits in the range of 70–200 GeV on cutoff parameters. We test to an accuracy of 5–8% the validity of some general principles of QED, such as pointlike coupling, crossing symmetry and μe-universality.- Published

- Abstract
The Sterman-Weinberg 2-jet cross section is measured from the hadron energy flow using the thrust axis to define the axis of the jet cone. The results are compared with first order QCD predictions. Deviations due to fragmentation are observed which decrease with increasing center of mass energy. We obtain an upper limit of ?
max ˜523 MeV for the QCD scale parameter using a method which is insensitive to the details of the fragmentation. Moments of energy flow are also studied.- Published

- Abstract
The production of collinear muon pairs has been studied using the JADE detector at thee
+ e− storage ring at PETRA. Results for the total cross section and the angular distribution were obtained at centre of mass (cm) energies ranging from 12 to 46 GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity offLdt>90 pb−1 , of which 71.2 pb−1 were taken at =34.4 GeV and 17 pb−1 at =42.4 GeV. The results are compared to electroweak theories, in particular the “Standard Model”.- Published

- Abstract
The jet character of the hadronic final states produced ine
+ e- annihilations is studied in terms of jet measures such as thrust, sphericity, jet opening angle and jet masses, in the energy range 7.7 to 31.6 GeV. All distributions and averages have been corrected for detector effects and initial state radiation. The energy dependence of the averages of these jet quantities is used to estimate the contributions due to perturbative QCD and fragmentation effects. Correlations between the jet measures and the multiplicity of charged hadrons are also presented.- Published

- Abstract
We have measured the cross section of four charged pion production in photon-photon interactions in the invariant mass range 1.0≦W
γγ ≦3.2 GeV and up toQ2 =16 GeV2 . For 1.2 GeV≦Wγγ ≦1.7 GeV the process is dominated by ρ0 ρ0 production with a rapid rise in cross section around 1.2 GeV, well below the nominal ρ0 ρ0 threshold. The observed distributions in the two particle masses and in the production and decay angles are well described by an incoherent sum of the phase-space subprocesses γγ →ρ0 ρ0 , →ρ0 π+ π− , and →π+ π− π+ π− . A spin-parity analysis of the ρ0 ρ0 system showsJP =2+ to dominate, although 0+ is also possible forWγγ ≦1.4 GeV. Negative partity states are excluded.- Published

In the analysis of the reactione
+ e− →e+ e− KS 0 Ks 0 clear evidence for exclusive γγ→f2 ′ resonance production is observed. The productΓγγ ·B(f2 ′ →K ) is measured to be 0.10−0.03−0.02 +0.04+0.03 keV independent of ana priori assumption on the helicity structure. Our data are consistent with a pure helicity 2 contribution and we derive an upper limit for the ratioΓγγ (0) /Γγγ . The absence of events in the mass region around 1.3 GeV clearly proves destructivef2 −a2 interference and allows to measure the relative phases betweenf2 ,a2 andf2 ′ . Upper limits on the production of the glueball candidate statesf2 (1720) andX(2230) as well as theKS 0 KS 0 -continuum are given.- Published

The reactione
+ e− →μ+ μ− has been studied with the PLUTO detector at the c.m. energy of 34.7 GeV, based on an integrated luminosity of 46 pb−1 . The total cross section agrees with QED predictions, and the corresponding lower limits for theΛ+ andΛ− QED cutoff parameters are 267 and 126 GeV respectively (95% c.l.). A forward-backward asymmetry parameterA=−(13.4±3.1±<1)% is observed, which is in agreement with the standard model, as well as with other PETRA results obtained at the same energy.- Published

A measurement of the ?? total cross section, s
?? (Q2 W), is presented for theQ2 range 0.1 to 100 GeV2 , and for the massW of the hadronic final state between 1.5 and 10 GeV. The dependence of s?? on bothQ2 andW is measured. The results are compared with theoretical predictions. It is found that the data are well described by a sum of quarkparton model and vector dominance contributions.- Published

0 ω has been carried out at an averagee+ e− CM energy of 34.6 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 45 pb−1 . Upper limits are set for these two channels over the γγ CM Energy range of 1.6 to 2.5 GeV. The cross section is determined for the exclusive channelγγ→π+ 2π− π0 .- Published

- Abstract
We present high statistics measurements of the energy-energy correlation (EEC) and its related asymmetry (AEEC) ine
+ e− annihilation at a c.m. energy of 34.6 GeV. We find that the energy dependence as well as the large angle behaviour of the latter are well described by perturbative QCD calculations toOα(s 2 ). Non-perturbative effects are estimated with the help of fragmentation models in which different jet topologies are separated using (ɛ, δ) cuts, and found to be small. The extracted values of lie between 100 and 300 MeV.- Published

- Abstract
The production of photons ine
+ e- ??+hadrons is investigated at three centre of mass energies around 14, 22 and 34 GeV. On average, photons carry 25% of the total available energy, with a multiplicity similar to the charged multiplicity. The inclusive photon spectra are found to scale with the centre of mass energy as a function of the Feynman variablex. p0 and ? mesons are reconstructed from their decay photons. The slopes of the spectra are similar to that for charged pions and approximate scaling is observed for p0 production. The mean p0 and ? multiplicities are given. The observed photon yield can be fully accounted for by hadron decays and initial state radiation. However, up to one extra photon per event from other sources cannot be excluded.- Published

The differential cross section of the reactione
+ e- ?e+ e- at a c.m. energy of 34.7 GeV has been measured. The result, together with our previously measurede+ e- ?a+ a- data, are compared with the standard model predictions. We obtain for the weak neutral current couplings the valuesgv 2 =0.09×0.06,ga 2 =0.38×0.08. A fit of the Weinberg mixing angle gives the valuegv 2 =0.09×0.06,ga 2 =0.038×0.08. The data are also used to set limits on possible deviations from the pointlike structure of leptons. An upper limit for thee+ e- coupling to a heavy spin 0 boson is also given.- Published

We present an experimental study of jetproduction in photon-photon interactions for 0.1?Q
2 ?120 GeV2 and jet transverse momentum,pT , up to 5 GeV/c. At alQ2 , the data show a highpT , tail, characteristic of a point-like interaction. The jet production cross-section approaches the quarkparton model (QPM) expectation as either jetpT orQ2 increases. Overall, the data are well described in both total cross-section and event topology by the sum of a vector-dominance model and a point-like interaction, represented by the QPM.- Published

- Abstract
Energy-energy-correlations (EEC) have been measured with the JADE detector at c.m. energies of 14 GeV, 22 GeV and in the region 29 GeV
cm<36 GeV. Corrected results are presented of EEC and their asymmetry, which can be directly compared to theoretical predictions. At 〈E cm 〉=34 GeV a comparison with second order QCD predictions yields good agreement for the string model fragmentation resulting in a value of the strong coupling constant αs =0.165±0.01 (stat.). The independent fragmentation models, which yield values of αs between 0.10 and 0.15 depending on the treatment of energy and momentum conservation and of the gluon splitting, do not provide a satisfactory description of the data over the full angular range.- Published
