Objective: To describe the use of the Fugulin scale to classify pediatric patients hospitalized in a respiratory unit as a subsidy for the allocation of human resources given the increase in cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome., Method: Experience report conducted in a children's hospital in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba with data collection from medical records and approved by the Institution and by the Research Ethics Committee., Results: Between February and May 2022, the percentage of patients categorized in minimal and intermediate care decreased by 53 and 11.4%, respectively, while those in high dependency and semi-intensive care expanded by 31.2 and 84.2%. In addition, in just four months, there was a considerable increase in the positivity of virologies compared to the twelve months of 2021. The susceptibility of children to the development of severe respiratory infection was proven through the decrease in virologies with undetectable results., Conclusion: The results obtained allowed us to conclude there was a significant increase in the complexity of patients admitted to the respiratory unit, showing it is essential to provide a nursing team compatible with the care needs.

Objective: To describe the implementation of Modified Seldinger Technology for percutaneous catheterization in critically ill newborns., Method: A quasi-experimental before- and-after study, carried out with neonatologist nurses in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit., Results: Seven nurses participated in the research. Catheter pre-insertion, insertion and maintenance were assessed using the conventional and modified Seldinger technique. Reliability was satisfactory in pre-test, 5.40 (Md = 6.00), and post-test, 5.94 (Md = 7.00), and perfect in the items about device insertion and maintenance. There was low assertiveness in the items on indication, microintroduction procedure via ultrasound, limb repositioning and disinfection of connections/connectors., Conclusion: Despite the Modified Seldinger Technique expanding some stages of execution over the traditional method of percutaneous catheterization, nurses were more assertive after theoretical-practical training. The technology was implemented and is in the process of being implemented in the health service.

Objectives: to establish the prevalence of salvage of central venous catheters in newborns with bloodstream infection caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci., Methods: retrospective cross-sectional study with 136 newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit between 2011 and 2017. The total of 143 infection events undergoing antibiotic therapy were evaluated., Results: among the 143 infection events, 39 catheters in which antibiotic therapy was used were saved and in 69 cases, the device was removed. Positive central blood culture and single lumen catheter were factors associated with salvage failure. The probability of salvage decreased with infections diagnosed from 15 days of using the catheter. Negative blood culture raised the chance of salvage by fourfold., Conclusions: the use of antibiotic therapy in the treatment of infections resulted in a low prevalence of salvage of the central venous catheter. The probability of salvage was associated with variables of the device.

Objective: To describe a case of deep incisional surgical site infection in a children's hospital in South Brazil, emphasizing the nursing care measures provided to the newborn., Method: Case study with data collection from medical record, approved by the institution and the Human Research Ethics Committee., Results: From the diagnosis of surgical site infection, a plan was established for specific care of the lesion using occlusive dressings made with technologies aimed at accelerating the second-intention healing process., Conclusion: Despite the severity of the lesions, the scientific knowledge and the skill of the nurses during treatment of the surgical site infection provided the newborn with full surgical wound healing and hospital discharge before the estimated moment.

Objective: To present the nursing care of a newborn with Lamellar Ichthyosis admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of a public children's hospital in a municipality in the state of Paraná, Brazil., Method: A qualitative intralocal study implementing the Case Study methodology, in which a real case was explored in a delimited system with data collection from multiple sources of information during 66 days of hospitalization in 2016., Results: The nursing care present in the protocol was based on: maintaining skin integrity through hydration and continuous lubrication with emollients, temperature control, nutrition and prevention of secondary infections., Conclusion: Through the case study, it is affirmed that implementation of the Nursing Process, especially the care plan, was essential for the multidisciplinary success of the treatment. There was improvement in the skin and mucous membranes, as well as prevention of infections, culminating in favorable survival conditions and the autonomy of parents for home care.

Objective: To describe a case of epidermolysis bullosa occurring in a children's hospital in the South of Brazil, evidencing the nursing care provided to this newborn diagnosed with this pathology., Method: A case study with data collection from medical records, approved by the Institution and by the Research Ethics Committee with Human Beings., Results: After the diagnostic confirmation, a specific care plan was established for the newborn, encompassing basic human needs to the clinical treatment of the disease., Conclusion: The neonate was discharged with shorter hospitalization time and with total epithelization of the lesions, despite the severity. The family actively participated in the care process, demonstrating the ability to perform the dressings at home.

Objective: To analyze nurses' knowledge and practices regarding pain management of newborns admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units., Method: A descriptive and cross-sectional study. Data were collected from 51 nurses based on an adapted questionnaire aimed at evaluating knowledge and practices regarding the management of neonatal pain in six hospitals in Curitiba and its Metropolitan Region., Results: For most nurses (86.0%), neonates feel pain. A total of 34.7% of the nurses reported never using pain assessment scales. Pain management was recorded by 84.3% of the nurses. Administered pharmacological measures were Paracetamol and Fentanyl (47.1%) and Morphine (17.6%); while non-pharmacological measures adopted were sweetened solution (68.6%), non-nutritive sucking (58.8%) and positioning (56.9%)., Conclusion: Nurses considered neonatal pain a real event; however, they do not perform pain assessment or treatment of newborns in a systematized way.It is necessary to implement knowledge translation strategiesin order to improve pain management in newborns., Objetivo: Verificar o conhecimento e as práticasdos enfermeiros sobreo manejo da dor de recém-nascidos admitidos em Unidades de Tratamento Intensivo Neonatal., Método: Estudo descritivo e transversal. Os dados foram coletados com 51 enfermeiros, a partir de um questionário adaptado que visa avaliar o conhecimento e as práticas sobre o manejo da dor neonatal, em seis hospitais de Curitiba e Região Metropolitana., Resultados: Para a maioria dos enfermeiros(86,0%), os neonatos sentem dor. Um total de 34,7% afirmaramnunca utilizar escalas de avaliaçãoda dor. O registro do manejo da dor foi realizado por 84,3% dos enfermeiros. As medidas farmacológicas realizadas foram Paracetamol e Fentanil (47,1%) e Morfina (17,6%);as não farmacológicas adotadas foram solução adocicada (68,6%), sucção não nutritiva (58,8%) e posicionamento (56,9%)., Conclusão: Os enfermeiros consideraram a dor neonatal como um evento real, porém não realizavam avaliação ou tratamento da dor no recém-nascido de modosistematizado. É necessário implementarestratégias de tradução do conhecimento paraaprimorar o manejo da dor de recém-nascidos.
