New production and trade patterns due to climate change and policy interventions are increasingly affecting the wine sector. This paper investigates how patterns of production and trade in main wine producing regions respond to changes in climate and policy interventions. An approach based on a combination of Ricardian trade and climate models suggests that higher temperatures in the main producing regions of wine benefit both production and trade of wine. A gravity-based analysis shows that the effects of policy interventions on the global trade of wine are heterogeneous and dependent on the specific objective of the intervention.

This article describes a novel method for quantifying fixation disparity and evaluates its role in visuospatial cognition during an authentic learning task, specifically, the determination of molecule chirality in organic chemistry involving mental rotation and pattern comparison. The first study examined the influence of molecular model dimensionality (2D vs. 3D) on chirality determination performance and visual attention of 55 participants. The second study explored how the sustained playing of the tile-matching game Mahjong, a pattern comparison game, can affect visual attention and visuospatial performance during the chirality determination task of 59 participants. Fixation disparity was one of the eye tracking variables explored. Both studies revealed that (1) individuals with higher fixation disparity underperformed on the chirality task, which involves mental rotation and pattern comparison, and (2) fixation disparity improved over time in participants who played Mahjong. This work provides important implications for using fixation disparity as a possible biomarker of visuospatial performance.

Consumers' interest towards food with healthy and sustainable characteristics is growing and companies try to address such trend through the supply of products with characteristics for which consumers show willingness to pay a premium price. Table grapes could be considered a product with functional characteristics since offer a wealth of health benefits due to their high nutrient and antioxidant contents. Moreover, its production and distribution are increasingly affected by sustainability concerns. On the basis of these considerations, the objective of this paper is to evaluate the consumer preferences for health and environmental attributes of table grapes. For this purpose, a nationwide survey was conducted in Italy using the Computer Assisted Web Interviewing (CAWI) method and the Best- Worst Scaling Method (BWS) for data analysis. The survey is divided into sections which consider, besides the socio-demographic characteristics of respondents, questions about their preferences related to specific attributes of table grapes (variety, color, seedless, organic or conventional production, origin) and to nutritional and sustainable characteristics reported on the label. Results could be of interest for companies which can focus their marketing strategies on specific characteristics of the product, and for policy makers who are asked to take decisions for public health.

During the last decades there have been significant changes in trade regulations that are modifying the global trade of wine. The number of non-tariff measures (NTMs) adopted in the wine sector is relevant. Similarly, a large number of bilateral trade agreements have been adopted. Despite the regulation is heavy, the impact of these policy instruments on trade is not always clear, nor quantified at global scale. We investigate the effects that bilateral NTMs are showing on global imports of wine. In particular, we estimate a gravity model to explain how bilateral NTMs influence wine trade, and we disentangle these effects for different segments of the international market of wine. Our results suggest that bilateral NTMs tend to favour imports of wine. Differences emerge across market segments and types of regulations. In particular, the Technical Barriers to Trade favour (friction) bottled (bulk) wine; pre-shipment inspections enhance imports of bottled wine; the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Standards are the most trade-enhancing NTMs, regardless of the market segment.

Thanks to the new developments of internet technology and social media, communication is giving consumer newfound awareness. Additionally, thanks to the technological development, the modern consumer is getting always more informed and interactive, both with other consumers and brands. He requires traditional products to be experience-based, with strong links to local culture and tradition. Storytelling based marketing is having strong impact on brand loyalty and emotional connections of consumers to wine. The study presents a review of the literature on food&wine storytelling and social media use, and draws hypotheses to the study of the wine marketing for the future.

The choice of a bottle of wine is affected by the presence of attributes that are searched by consumers and can be evaluated before the purchase. The aim of the paper is to analyze the effect of some search attributes on wine price variability applying the Hedonic Price Model. It allows explaining how the price of wine varies depending on its main quality attributes. The analysis has been based on a sample of wines made in Puglia, Italian region characterized by a tradition in wine production and consumption. Data have been collected from a wine guidebook considering the years 2008–2013. The study provided a measure of the market value of some search attributes for wines produced in Puglia. Attributes as alcoholic content, age and score given by experts, influence price variability allowing wines to obtain a premium price, such as the most known Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and some Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). The name of the variety seems not to have high influence with the exception of less known and locally grown varieties. Results may be of interest for marketers and policy makers of wine industry. Managerial implications could refer to the importance of differentiation strategies aimed to market segmentation and to the pricing strategy. Policymakers could also find interesting hints about the influence of the different appellations and the importance of minor autochthonous grape varieties.

Wine industry is characterized by high added value, particularly for some segments. The quality of the final product is the result of the right combination of many variables which involve the choice of the suitable wine grape varieties to particular conditions of site location, soil, climate, landscape together with entrepreneurial right decisions in management. The globalization of the market with the increasing of competition among producers and the evidences of climate change, that has different effects on the vitivinicultural areas in the world, have led to the growth of frequency and intensity of risks that winegrowers have to cope with. Their behaviour and reactions in managing risky situations of different nature, often adopting instruments they are not familiar with, as insurance or derivatives, could result in relevant consequences on prices, costs of production, revenues and profits, in other words, on the value chain of the wine production. This paper aims to provide a general overview of the economic literature on risk management in the wine industry.

Digital video (DV) is widely used in education settings; however, few researchers have explored the neurocognitive underpinnings of DV tasks. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) records neurological activity in real time, is robust to movement, and provides information about cognitive load and engagement levels during authentic learning tasks. This study used fNIRS to measure hemodynamic responses while eight participants completed a DV task. Statistically significant differences in hemodynamic responses during the editing and evaluation stages of the DV task were found. fNIRS can help researchers understand cognitive load and engagement levels during DV tasks, which can help inform learning and instruction.

This prospective registry-based study aims to describe electrochemotherapy (ECT) modalities in basal cell carcinoma (BCC) patients and evaluate its efficacy, safety, and predictive factors. The International Network for Sharing Practices of Electrochemotherapy (InspECT) multicentre database was queried for BCC cases treated with bleomycin-ECT between 2008 and 2019 (n = 330 patients from seven countries, with 623 BCCs [median number: 1/patient; range: 1–7; size: 13 mm, range: 5–350; 85% were primary, and 80% located in the head and neck]). The procedure was carried out under local anaesthesia in 68% of cases, with the adjunct of mild sedation in the remaining 32%. Of 300 evaluable patients, 242 (81%) achieved a complete response (CR) after a single ECT course. Treatment naïvety (odds ratio [OR] 0.35, 95% confidence interval [C.I.] 0.19–0.67, p = 0.001) and coverage of deep tumour margin with electric pulses (O.R. 5.55, 95% C.I. 1.37–21.69, p = 0.016) predicted CR, whereas previous radiation was inversely correlated (O.R. 0.25, p = 0.0051). Toxicity included skin ulceration (overall, 16%; G3, 1%) and hyperpigmentation (overall, 8.1%; G3, 2.5%). At a 17-month follow-up, 28 (9.3%) patients experienced local recurrence/progression. Despite no convincing evidence that ECT confers improved outcomes compared with standard surgical excision, it can still be considered an opportunity to avoid major resection in patients unsuitable for more demanding treatment. Treatment naïvety and coverage of the deep margin predict tumour clearance and may inform current patient selection and management.

The gestures we produce serve a variety of functions—they affect our communication, guide our attention and help us think and change the way we think. Gestures can consequently also help us learn, generalize what we learn and retain that knowledge over time. The effects of gesture-based instruction in mathematics have been well studied. However, few of these studies are directly applicable to classroom environments. Here, we review literature that highlights the benefits of producing and observing gestures when teaching and learning mathematics, and we provide suggestions for designing research studies with an eye towards how gestures can feasibly be applied to classroom learning. Context The search for somatic mutations in adrenals resected from patients with primary aldosteronism (PA) is performed by Sanger sequencing, often implemented with immunohistochemistry (IHC)-guidance focused on aldosterone-producing (CYP11B2-positive) areas. Objective To investigate the impact of double IHC for CYP11B1 and CYP11B2 on Sanger and next-generation sequencing (NGS). Methods We investigated 127 consecutive adrenal aldosterone-producing adenomas from consenting surgically cured PA patients using double IHC for CYP11B1 and CYP11B2, by Sanger sequencing and NGS. Results Double IHC for CYP11B2 and CYP11B1 revealed 3 distinct patterns: CYP11B2-positive adenoma (pattern 1), mixed CYP11B1/CYP11B2-positive adenoma (pattern 2), and adrenals with multiple small CYP11B2-positive nodules (pattern 3). Sanger sequencing allowed detection of KCNJ5 mutations in 44% of the adrenals; NGS revealed such mutations in 10% of those negative at Sanger and additional mutations in 61% of the cases. Importantly the rate of KCNJ5 mutations differed across patterns: 17.8% in pattern 1, 71.4% in pattern 2, and 10.7% in pattern 3 (χ2 = 22.492, P <.001). Conclusion NGS allowed detection of mutations in many adrenals that tested negative at Sanger sequencing. Moreover, the different distribution of KCNJ5 mutations across IHC patterns indicates that IHC-guided sequencing protocols selecting CYP11B2-positive areas could furnish results that might not be representative of the entire mutational status of the excised adrenal, which is important at a time when KCNJ5 mutations are suggested to drive management of patients with aldosterone-producing adenomas. Introduction: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a common endocrine disorder in which surgery is the only curative therapy. Ectopic parathyroid adenoma in the pyriform sinus resulting from a pathological migration of parathyroid glands along the embryological development is a rare cause of PHPT. We describe a case of a persistent primary hyperparathyroidism after previous unsuccessful surgery due to an ectopic parathyroid adenoma within the pyriform sinus and we review the previous reports on this issue. Case presentation: A 62-year-old woman was referred for persistent hypercalcemia following unsuccessful cervical exploratory surgery. Cervical ultrasound did not detect any parathyroid abnormalities. At variance, 99mTcsestamibi SPECT/CT and CT scan of the neck identified a parathyroid adenoma in the left pyriform sinus, which was confirmed by endoscopy. The patient was successfully treated by transoral robotic resection and the pathology confirmed a parathyroid adenoma. Conclusions: The ectopic parathyroid adenoma in the pyriform sinus is so uncommon that only fourteen cases have been reported. However, the pyriform sinus should be considered a possible location of ectopic parathyroid glands, especially in the setting of persistent or recurrent PHPT after parathyroid surgery. The paper contains a preliminary study on the role that dynamic pressure might play in the dynamics of a gas bubble oscillating in a liquid. To this aim, we introduce a mathematical model, proposed under the homobaricity hypothesis and deduced from the 14-moment theory of rational extended thermodynamics through significant simplifications, that makes the equations easily integrable over long time intervals. In the presence of a gas with high bulk viscosity, relevant effects can be observed in different physical conditions: isothermal or adiabatic regimes, small amplitude oscillations, non-linear oscillations, resonances, and sonoluminescence. To make the study more realistic, we always refer to carbon dioxide gas, which on the one hand could present high values of bulk viscosity and on the other hand is known for its peculiar behaviors in the framework of cavitation and gas bubbles. Despite carrying an excess risk of cardiovascular events, primary aldosteronism (PA) is a commonly overlooked secondary form of arterial hypertension. An increased awareness of its high prevalence and broader screening strategies are urgently needed to improve its detection rate and allow early diagnosis and targeted treatment. For patients with unilateral PA, these measures can correct hyperaldosteronism and ensure cure of hypertension, even when resistant to drug treatment, thus preventing adverse cardiovascular events. Among these, atrial fibrillation is the most common, but left ventricular hypertrophy, stroke, chronic kidney disease, and myocardial infarction also occur more often than in patients with hypertension and no PA. Young patients, who have higher chances of being cured long term, and high-risk patients, such as those with stage III or resistant hypertension, are those who will benefit most from an early diagnosis of PA. Therefore, the implementation of strategies to detect PA by a simplified diagnostic algorithm is necessary. In the patients who seek for surgical cure, adrenal vein sampling is key for the identification of unilateral PA and the achievement of optimal outcomes. Unfortunately, being technically demanding and poorly available, adrenal vein sampling represents the bottleneck in the workup of PA. Considering the novel knowledge generated in the past 5 years in many studies, particularly in the AVIS-2 study (Adrenal Vein Sampling International Study-2), based on 4 decades of experience at our center and on the last guidelines, we herein provide an update on the management of PA with recommendations for drug treatment and strategies to avoid adrenal vein sampling wherever it is poorly, or not, available.
