The rise in fish and seafood consumption driven by aquaculture comes with its share of challenges and controversies, notably the need for expanded feed production. The use of fishmeal and fish oil to raise carnivorous fish has caused environmental problems, including ecosystem imbalance and habitat destruction, as well as ethical issues like fishing forage fish for feed instead of human consumption. Thus, the industry has been actively pursuing alternative feed ingredients to reduce reliance on fish-derived components. This progress in the aquaculture feed sector has made selecting the best feed solution complex across various fronts. This study aims to assess the environmental impacts of three feed formulations, each with different protein sources (poultry by-products, PMB, Tenebrio molitor larvae, TM, or Hermetia illucens larvae, HI), tailored for the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), a prized species in European aquaculture. The environmental sustainability of these alternatives was evaluated against benchmarks of fishmeal and fish oil-based feed. Employing a cradle-to-gate approach and a FU of 1 kg of product, the study utilized OpenLCA software supported by the Ecoinvent ® v3.7.1 database. The results focused on the production stages of each ingredient, including logistical and transportation aspects leading up to the final formulation. All alternatives to traditional feed demonstrated either comparable or superior environmental performance (i.e. - 66 % of PMB-f, -33 % of TM-f and - 29 % HI-f kgCO 2 eq) with few exceptions for TM-f. This investigation highlighted how integrating innovative ingredients could positively impact the environmental footprint of aquafeed production chains. Furthermore, the main hotspots in the alternative feed formulas life cycles have been identified and viable alternatives for improvement have been proposed, such as selecting different input materials or enhancing energy efficiency. Introduction: The optimal treatment approach for Bony Bankart remains a subject of considerable debate among shoulder surgeons. Existing literature highlights low recurrence rates and high patient satisfaction with nonoperative treatment, particularly in the middle-aged population. This study aimed to evaluate the recurrence rate of dislocation, as well as the clinical and functional outcomes in middle-aged individuals treated nonoperatively following an acute bony Bankart fracture. Additionally, the impact of glenoid rim size and fragmentation on the treatment outcome was investigated., Material and Methods: A prospective analysis was conducted on 20 patients aged over 50 with nonoperatively treated bony Bankart fractures, ensuring a minimum follow-up of 24 months. The study population was categorized based on fragment size (small and medium) according to Kim classification and glenoid rim fragmentation (type 1b and 1c) according to Scheibel classification. Data including UCLA score, Rowe score, recurrence rate, clinical instability, and range of motion (ROM) were collected and analyzed., Results: The average UCLA and Rowe scores were 32.15 ± 2.85 and 93.85 ± 2.19, respectively, with no instances of dislocation recurrence. The affected shoulder exhibited no significant reductions in ROM compared to the contralateral side, except for a loss of external rotation (ER) (13.08° ± 7.51; p = 0.005). No differences were observed based on fragment size, although patients with multifragmented glenoid rims showed a greater loss of ER compared to those with a solitary fragment, albeit not reaching statistical significance., Conclusion: Nonoperative treatment appears to be a viable and effective option for middle-aged individuals with bony Bankart fractures, resulting in favorable functional outcomes and a low risk of recurrence. Background: The Trillat procedure is a surgical treatment for recurrent anterior shoulder instability. It consists of an inferior closed-wedge osteoclasy of the coracoid process. Nowadays, it is used to treat selected cases of shoulder instability. This systematic review aims to provide an overview of clinical and functional outcomes, recurrence rate, and complications of the Trillat procedure for recurrent anterior shoulder instability., Methods: A systematic review of the literature regarding the Trillat procedure for recurrent anterior shoulder instability was carried out on Medline, through PubMed, and Embase. The English and French literature published before the 4 th of November 2023 was analyzed. The data regarding demographics, outcome, recurrency, and complications were reported., Results: From 38 articles with the primary search, seven manuscripts were enrolled. A total of 419 patients and 443 shoulders were analyzed, with a mean age of 35.46 (range 25-61) years. The mean follow-up was 65.01 (range 24.8-132) months postoperative. The pooled data showed 91.2% of subjective satisfaction, weighted mean postoperative Rowe score of 86.25 points, Walch-Duplay of 84.6 points, and a Constant-Murley Score of 84.82 points. The recurrence rate was 10.28% for all the articles involved and 8.51% for the articles proposing the procedure for selected case of anterior instability, with low-grade glenoid bone loss. The most common complications were a loss of external rotation and the development of osteoarthritis., Conclusion: The Trillat procedure for recurrent anterior shoulder instability showed promising results, especially in selected cases, such as low-grade glenoid bone loss, with massive irreparable cuff tears or hyperlaxity., (© 2024 The Authors.)

Background: Tibiofemoral components rotational congruency affects the total knee arthroplasty (TKA) success. The smart insert sensor (I-S) helps to establish tibial component rotation reciprocally to a fixed femoral rotation. We aimed (1) to validate the use of I-S as a possible tool to reach reproducible reciprocal femorotibial rotation (RftR) in TKA independently from anatomic landmarks, reducing outliers in combined and mismatched femorotibial rotation (CftR and MMftR, respectively) positioning and (2) to validate the "curve-on-curve" method for a specific type of asymmetrical tibial component., Methods: From February 2018, we conducted a prospective case-control study including 106 patients undergoing TKA. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on the method used to establish tibial component rotation: with the I-S use (group A, n = 53) and with the standard "curve-on-curve" technique (group B, n = 53). Rotational alignment was calculated using the Berger protocol with postoperative computed tomography scanning. Alignment parameters measured were tibial and femoral component rotations (tR, fR), the CftR, the MMftR, and the RftR., Results: Intraoperative rotation measured by I-S correlated the best with RftR (r = 0.84; P < .001) at the post-operative CT scanning. No significant differences were found between groups A and B regarding all types of rotation (fR: P  = .774; tR: P  = .467; CftR: P  = .847) except for MMftR ( P  = .036) and RftR ( P  = .023). There were no outliers in group A but 27 and 12 outliers in group B for MMftR and CftR respectively ( P < .001; P  = .032)., Conclusions: The TKA components' rotation established using a smart I-S intraoperatively is ascribable to the RftR at postoperative computed tomography scan. The I-S helps reduce outliers in the CftR and MMftR. An asymmetrical tibial base plate implanted using the curve-on-curve technique does not create a neutral reciprocal femorotibial rotation significantly increasing the number of cases with mismatched femorotibial internal rotation., (© 2024 The Authors.)

Protein meals from insects in combination with poultry by-product meal appear to be promising ingredients for replacing conventional proteins in the diets of carnivorous fish. The present study explored the effects on growth performance, hepatic enzymatic activity, and fillet physical and nutritional characteristics during a 66-day feeding trial performed on European seabass. A total of 3000 fish were distributed into three tanks, where the control group was fed with a commercial diet (CG) and a second group was fed in duplicate with the experimental diet (SSH) containing 10% Hermetia illucens larva meal, 30% poultry by-product meal, and <5.5 g/100 g of feed of marine origin proteins. All fish showed good growth performance. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, and 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase activities were higher in the SSH group than in the CG group. The fillet fatty acid profile was largely unaffected by diet, except for a few fatty acids. Fish fed the SSH diet had a lower C22:1n-11 content than CG, thus suggesting an increased β-oxidation. The oxidative status of muscle lipids was not affected by the diet. In conclusion, the present study showed that European seabass can be successfully fed the SSH diet for two months in a commercial setting.

Background and Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether this system is associated with a reduced rate of failure and complications in patients treated for proximal femoral fractures with intramedullary nailing., Materials and Methods: 742 Patients with AO-OTA 31-A intertrochanteric fractures were enrolled at a single Institution. Functional evaluation was assessed through the Functional Independence Measure (FIM™) instrument and Parker's New Mobility Score (NMS). Radiological follow-up included the degree of the reduction according to the Baumgartner criteria, the Tip-Apex Distance, and the shortening of the telescoping screws and its lateral protrusion., Results: Pre-operative mean FIM™ and NMS were 4.3 (range 1-9) and 98.7 (range 22-126), respectively. At the 12-month follow-up the average FIM™ and NMS were 95.3 (range 22-126) and 3.7 (range 1-9), respectively. Mean shortening of the lag screws was 4.3 mm (range 1-8) and mean lateral protrusion was 1.7 mm (range 0-3). 3 Cases (0.70%) of non-consolidation requiring reoperation were recorded. 1 Case (0.24%) of these cases was also characterized by nail breakage. No case of cut-out has been reported at our follow-up., Conclusions: This dual telescoping nail system is effective and safe. The sliding of the telescoping screws within the barrel is able to decrease strain from the femoral head during weight bearing reducing the risk of cut-out., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

Exposure to air and light lowers the meat quality of chickens, which is mainly determined by the color alteration and accumulation of detrimental products from lipid oxidation. This study tests the effects of 2 supplements rich in polyphenols, Oxilem (OX) and OxiGem (OG), on broiler Ross 308 performance and meat quality in comparison to a control group (C). A total of 105 one-day-old Ross 308 male chicks were allocated to 21 pens and randomly assigned to 1 of the 3 treatments. The trial lasted 42 d. Individual live weight and feed intake per pen were recorded. Proximate analysis, color, cholesterol content and cholesterol oxidation products (COPs), fatty acids (FAs), volatile aldehydes profile, and secondary oxidation products of meat FAs were determined, with analyses for detecting oxidative alterations conducted on breast burgers preserved for 7 d at 4°C. Birds fed OG grew 7 g/d more than those receiving OX, reaching a higher final weight. After slaughtering, meat from the OX group had a higher yellow index compared to C. After 7 d of air and light exposure, the influence on the color parameters of the OG and OX burgers was significantly less pronounced than that of C. Secondary oxidation products of the FAs of the burgers were not significantly affected by the diet regimens. In addition, OX and OG burgers exhibited lower amounts of volatile aldehydes, triol and COPs. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the Löwenstein Lateral view and the True Lateral view for the positioning of the cephalic hip screw, through a cadaveric study., Materials and Methods: We placed two Kirschner wires in eight femur specimens using an Antero-Posterior view, Löwenstein Lateral view and True Lateral view. The distances between the Kirschner wires and the anterior, posterior, superior and inferior cortex were measured in all projections. The head of the femur was then sectioned, and the same macroscopic distances were measured. Finally, we could calculate the accuracy of the two radiographic lateral projections., Results: When the Kirschner wire was placed in the center of the head using the Antero-Posterior and the True Lateral view, the accuracy of Antero-Posterior view was 0.9705 while the accuracy of True Lateral view and Löwenstein Lateral view was 1.1479 and 1.1584, respectively. When the Kirschner wire was placed superior on the Antero-Posterior and centrally on the True Lateral view, the accuracy of Antero-Posterior view was 0.9930 while the accuracy of True Lateral view and Löwenstein Lateral view was 1.1159 and 0.7224, respectively., Conclusion: When the Kirschner wire was positioned proximal in Antero-Posterior view and central in True Lateral view, only the True Lateral view showed high accuracy., (© 2023. Objectives: Proximal humerus fractures account for four-five % of all fractures. Shoulder hemiarthroplasty is indicated for complex fractures with high complication rates when treated with ORIF. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between the proper intraoperative tuberosity reduction, and the mid-to-long-term clinical outcome in a series of patients treated with hemiarthroplasty after proximal humerus fracture., Methods: Forty-one patients with proximal humerus fractures who underwent hemiarthroplasty surgery between July 2009 and December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Quantitative analysis of the reduction of the tuberosities was performed on postoperative X-rays focusing on the distance between reconstructed greater tuberosity and the apex of the head of the prosthesis, (head-tuberosity distance), and contact between tuberosity and humerus diaphysis. The University of California Los Angeles Score (UCLA) was calculated for each patient., Results: The mean time to surgery was 6.29 ± 2.8 days (range 2-18 days). Nine patients out of 41 (22%) had non anatomic tuberosity, and 32 (78%) were anatomic reduced. The UCLA score at the final follow-up was good and excellent (≥27) in 27 patients (66%), and poor (<27) in 14 (34%). A significant correlation was observed between proper tuberosity reduction and good/excellent UCLA scores (P<0.001)., Conclusion: Hemiarthroplasty is a valid and reliable technique for the treatment of proximal humerus fracture not eligible for internal fixation, with high risk of failure. The aim of the present study was to test synthetic flavors as potential feed attractants in zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) during early development. Six experimental groups were set up in triplicate: (i) a CTRL group fed a zebrafish commercial diet; (ii) a PG group fed a control diet added with Propylene Glycol (PG); (iii) A1 + and A2 + groups fed a control diet added with 1% of the two attractive flavors (A1 + cheese odor made by mixing Propylene Glycol (PG) with the aromatic chemicals trimethyamine, 2-acetylpyrazine, 2-acetylpyridine, and dimethyl sulfide; and A2 + caramel odor, made of PG mixed with the aromatic chemicals vanillin, maltol, cyclotene, acetoin, butyric acid, and capric acid with traces of both gamma-octalactone and gamma-esalactone) or the repulsive flavor (A - coconut odor, made by mixing PG with the aromatic chemicals gamma-eptalactone, gamma-nonalactone, delta-esalactone, and vanillin with trace of both delta-octalactone and maltol), respectively; (iv) an ROT group fed the two attractive diets, each administered singularly in a weekly rotation scheme. All the tested synthetic flavors did not affect the overall health of larval and juvenile fish and promoted growth. Due to the longer exposure time, results obtained from the juvenile stage provided a clearer picture of the fish responses: zebrafish fed both attractive diets showed higher appetite stimulus, feed ingestion, and growth, while the brain dopaminergic activity suggested the A2 + diet as the most valuable solution for its long-lasting effect over the whole experiment (60-day feeding trial, from larvae to adults). The present study provided important results about the possible use of attractive synthetic flavors for aquafeed production, opening new sustainable and more economically valuable opportunities for the aquaculture sector.

Background: Hip hemiarthroplasty dislocation is a devastating complication. Among other preoperative risk factors, acetabular morphology has been rarely studied. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the influence of preoperative native acetabular morphology on hemiarthroplasty dislocation., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 867 patients who underwent hip hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fracture between January 1, 2014 and January 1, 2019. The 380 included patients were treated with an anterior-based muscle-sparing approach. The central-edge angle (CEA) and acetabular depth-to-width ratio (ADWR) of the fractured hip were measured preoperatively on the anteroposterior pelvic view. Receiver operating characteristic curves were performed to analyze the optimal cutoff for CEA and ADWR. Hemiarthroplasty dislocation occurred in 18 patients (4.7%), and the remaining 362 patients were used as the control group., Results: No significant differences in terms of sex, age, dementia, neuromuscular disease, and body mass index were found between the 2 groups. The 18 patients who had a hip dislocation had significantly smaller mean CEA than the control group (P = .0001) (mean 36.1 ± 7.5° and 43.2 ± 5.6°, respectively) as well as ADWR (mean 34 ± 6 versus 37 ± 4, respectively) (P = .001). Using the receiver operating characteristic analysis, we report significant cutoffs of 38.5° for CEA (P = .0001) and 34.5 for the ADWR (P = .017)., Conclusion: Higher rates of hemiarthroplasty dislocation were observed in patients who had a preoperative CEA of less than 38.5° and an ADWR of less than 34.5. Background: Consumer interest in safeguarding animal welfare and increased demand for fresh aquatic products support the need to understand the effects of stunning methods used in aquaculture on the biochemical process affecting fish fillet quality. The present paper aimed at comparing electrical stunning (ES) and cold shock (ICE) in Salmo carpio, an Italian endemic under-investigated species. Rigor mortis evolution, fillet adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), shape, colour, pH and water holding capacity were assessed by integrating chemical and image analyses., Results: Seventy-two fish (24 fish per treatment) were stunned by ES, ICE or anaesthesia (AN, used as control), then percussively slaughtered. ES and ICE hastened rigor mortis onset and resolution (21 and 28 h post mortem) compared to AN. This was confirmed by the faster ATP degradation in ES and ICE. Fillet shape features varied during rigor mortis, according to the stunning method, with the perimeter showing irreversible variation in ES and ICE groups. Initial circularity was recovered only in AN, while ICE and ES fillets showed significantly different values, between 0 and 192 h., Conclusion: ES is a promising stunning technique for S. carpio, but parameters should be optimized, because of the adverse effect on muscle activity which caused a fast pH drop, and the presence of blood spots in the fillets. Background: The synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon proliferative metaplastic process of the synovial cells that can develop in any synovial joint. An isolated primary chondromatosis of the posterior compartment of the knee is uncommon and few cases are reported in literature. Our purpose is to describe a rare case of primary chondromatosis of the knee posterior compartment and report the arthroscopic loose bodies excision through a difficult posteromedial portal, avoiding the use of the accessory posterior portal, most commonly reported for approaching this disease., Case Presentation: We report a rare case of a 35-year-old Caucasian male patient with diagnosis of chondromatosis of the posterior knee compartment. The radiographs showed multiple loose bodies of the posterior compartment. The MRI revealed minimal synovial hypertrophy areas, multiple osteophytes in the intercondylar notch, and loose bodies in the posteromedial compartment. The CT allowed us to assess the bony structures, the morphology of the intercondylar notch, and the presence osteophytes of the medial and lateral femoral condyles. The CT images were crucial to plan how to reach the posterior compartments of the knee through a trans-notch passage. The patient underwent arthroscopic surgery using anteromedial, anterolateral, and posteromedial portals. The tunneling through the intercondylar osteophytes was performed to allow the arthroscope to pass trans-notch. To avoid additional accessory posterior portals, we used a 70° arthroscope to better explore the posterior knee compartment. The cartilage-like bodies were removed and synovectomy of the inflamed areas was performed. The clinical and radiological follow-up was 12 months and the patient showed excellent clinical outcomes, returning to his activities of daily living and sport activity., Conclusion: Our case report highlights the importance of the arthroscopic approach to treat synovial chondromatosis, despite the involvement of the posterior compartment of the knee. An optimal preoperative imaging allows to plan for the proper surgical procedure even in patients with severe osteoarthritis. Moreover, the adoption of an intercondylar notch tunneling and a 70° arthroscope can help surgeons to better explore the posterior knee compartment, avoiding an accessory posterior trans-septal portal.
