Este estudio, que se encuentra enmarcado dentro del área de Sociología de la Educación, tiene como objetivo analizar las razones que llevan a las personas a cambiar de la Universidad a un Ciclo Formativo de Grado Superior. Se considera pertinente analizar los factores que intervienen en esta decisión, pues supone un problema a nivel social y personal, sobre todo relacionado con el sistema educativo y con la estructura en la que estamos insertos. Para ello se han llevado a cabo diecisiete entrevistas en profundidad, que han revelado algunas similitudes y patrones. Si bien, cabe resaltar que no se ha pretendido inferir estos datos al resto de la sociedad. Se trata pues, de una aproximación a esta problemática desde una perspectiva cualitativa.

In the present work, novel polymeric copper(II) coordination compounds, namely [Cu2(cpida)(H2O)4][Cu(cpida)]·3H2O (1) (cpida3− = 2-(carboxyphenyl)iminodiacetate anion) and Na[Cu(cpida)] (3), were synthesized and characterized using infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 was obtained by slowly evaporating an aqueous solution of H3cpida, copper(II) sulfate, and NaOH at room temperature. The structural characterization revealed that 1 is an ionic entity formed by the [Cu(cpida)]− anion and the [Cu2(cpida)(H2O)4]+ cation, both of polymeric 1D structure. Compound 3 was prepared under similar conditions from copper perchlorate and crystallized via acetone diffusion. It is a coordination polymer formed by the [Cu(cpida)]− units, and the sodium cation is present in the structure, counterbalancing the anion charge. Depending on the crystallization conditions, it was possible to obtain other solvation forms of these structures. Starting from the conditions of compound 1, via the diffusion of ethanol, [Cu2(cpida)(H2O)4][Cu(cpida)]·H2O·1/2EtOH (2) was precipitated, while a hydrate form of compound 3 with the formula Na[Cu(cpida)]·2H2O (4) was obtained via methanol diffusion.

En este artículo se presentan las reflexiones epistemológicas del filósofo Francisco Fernández Buey (1943-2012), las cuales, han estado continuamente presentes en la obra del autor al menos desde la publicación en 1991 de La ilusión del método, y culminan en su obra póstuma Para la tercera cultura (2013) en una apuesta por la complementariedad entre ciencias positivas y reflexión humanística. Partiendo de un marxismo heterodoxo tanto en el plano ético-político como en el epistemológico, Fernández Buey apuesta por una idea de ciencia alejada del positivismo, a la vez que critica las filosofías contrarias a aquella en la medida en que la consideran como un conocimiento meramente reductor de una realidad que no puede ser aprehendida por la ciencia. Desde el concepto de dialéctica de Manuel Sacristán; el reconocimiento a la figura de Einstein como ejemplo de científico que no renuncia a otros modos de conocimiento; y la reflexión sobre la filosofía de la ciencia en la segunda mitad del siglo XX, el autor nos muestra la necesidad de un diálogo entre cultivadores de la ciencia y las humanidades para afrontar los desafíos del siglo XXI.

Debido a la implementación de las colonoscopias como método de tamizaje, ha aumentado el diagnóstico de tumores neuroendocrinos rectales (TNER), la mayoría tiene un tamaño menor de 1 centímetro en el momento del diagnóstico, confinado a la submucosa y bien diferenciado; generalmente tienen un curso benigno y en su mayoría se tratan por métodos endoscópicos. Las metástasis son raras y dependen del tamaño tumoral y otros factores como la invasión a la submucosa, diseminación linfática y clasificación histológica, lo cual determinará el pronóstico y tratamiento a elección. Se presenta el caso de un tumor neuroendocrino rectal presentado en forma de pólipo durante un tamizaje endoscópico de rutina y una aproximación de la literatura actual.

This work is a first approach to the knowledge of insects and other aquatic macroinvertebrates of rice agroecosystems from eastern Uruguay. The composition of the groups collected may represent an approximation to the knowledge of the quality of water sources associated with Uruguayan rice production. Sampling of aquatic macroinvertebrates was carried out during the grain-filling stage in crops without insecticide use, in three localities of Treinta y Tres Department. In each crop, macroinvertebrates were collected with a Surber-type network at the inlet and outlet of water to and from the paddy field and a neighbouring control area. Differences in morphospecies composition were found according to the location and source of water. Insecta was the most represented class in macroinvertebrate samplings (41.5%). Diptera (59.9%), Hemiptera (16.3%) and Ephemeroptera (14.0%) were the most abundant orders within insects. The Richness and Shannon Diversity Indices were higher than those recorded for similar studies in Costa Rica, Italy and Australia.

Sciomyzidae (Diptera) has been recorded in several countries of South America, but few species have been found in Uruguay. We report the first record of Sepedonea lindneri (Hendel, 1932) and Protodictya lilloana Steyskal, 1953 (Diptera, Sciomyzidae) from Uruguay. The specimens were collected in rice crops and in adjacent native vegetation with sweep net and vacuum sampler from December to March (2012–2015) in the Eastern region of the country. Photos of collection areas, habitus of adults and distribution map of the species are provided.

Intestinal microbiota can modulate portal hypertension through the regulation of the intestinal vasculature. We have recently demonstrated that bacterial antigens activate Paneth cells (PCs) to secrete products that regulate angiogenesis and portal hypertension. In the present work we hypothesized that Paneth cells regulate the development of lymphatic vessels under the control of intestinal microbiota during experimental portal hypertension. We used a mouse model of inducible PCs depletion (Math1Lox/LoxVilCreERT2) and performed partial portal vein ligation (PPVL) to induce portal hypertension. After 14 days, we performed mRNA sequencing and evaluated the expression of specific lymphangiogenic genes in small intestinal tissue. Intestinal and mesenteric lymphatic vessels proliferation was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Intestinal organoids with or without PCs were exposed to pathogen-associated molecular patterns, and conditioned media (CM) was used to stimulate human lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs). The lymphangiogenic activity of stimulated LECs was assessed by tube formation and wound healing assays. Secretome analysis of CM was performed using label-free proteomics quantification methods. Intestinal immune cell infiltration was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. We observed that the intestinal gene expression pattern was altered by the absence of PCs only in portal hypertensive mice. We found a decreased expression of specific lymphangiogenic genes in the absence of PCs during portal hypertension, resulting in a reduced proliferation of intestinal and mesenteric lymphatic vessels as compared to controls. In vitro analyses demonstrated that lymphatic tube formation and endothelial wound healing responses were reduced significantly in LECs treated with CM from organoids without PCs. Secretome analyses of CM revealed that PCs secrete proteins that are involved in lipid metabolism, cell growth and proliferation. Additionally, intestinal macrophages infiltrated the ileal mucosa and submucosa of mice with and without Paneth cells in response to portal hypertension. Our results suggest that intestinal microbiota signals stimulate Paneth cells to secrete factors that modulate the intestinal and mesenteric lymphatic vessels network during experimental portal hypertension.

La incidencia de las hernias inguinales en Colombia es de aproximadamente 15 por cada 1000 habitantes, y el riesgo de presentar una hernia inguinal durante la vida es del 27 % en hombres y del 3 % en mujeres. Existen presentaciones poco frecuentes como la hernia de Amyand que consiste en la protrusión del apéndice cecal, inflamada o no, dentro del contenido del saco herniario. A nivel global, tiene una incidencia del 0,13 % al 1 % y su tratamiento se realiza basándose en la clasificación de Losanoff y Basson. Sin embargo, una de las controversias aún existentes respecto al manejo quirúrgico, es la indicación del uso o no de mallas al momento de realizar la hernioplastia y el resultado final del mismo, así que este es el punto donde se centra la revisión de nuestro artículo. Se presenta el caso de un paciente de 79 años con una hernia de Amyand tipo 2, a quien se le practicó hernioplastia con malla de baja densidad absorbible, con adecuada evolución posquirúrgica.

La construcción de un territorio tiene múltiples aspectos, no se trata sólo de disponer de líneas imaginarias divisorias o el nombramiento de funcionarios con diferentes tareas por realizar; tiene que ver también con la elaboración de ejercicios matemáticos de medición y registro que interactúan, a su vez, con los recuerdos sobre el uso del suelo que tienen los habitantes de esas áreas sobre las soluciones prácticas que crearon para sortear los obstáculos de la naturaleza, para denominar los lugares que le dieran sentido al espacio que contiene a las sociedades que lo habitan, lo usan y lo transforman. En este contexto, el presente trabajo hace un recorrido histórico sobre las diferentes formas como se ha representado y se han generado noticias de las zonas que en el presente constituyen la región del centro occidente colombiano y analiza cómo esas representaciones a medida que prestan atención a una zona que tuvo por siglos un lugar limítrofe, y por lo tanto, había sobre ella pocas certezas acerca de sus realidades sociales, económicas e históricas, se hace evidente la importancia de tener mayor precisión sobre las sociedades que la habitaron, cómo definieron la toponimia y cómo establecieron los límites político-administrativos previo al surgimiento del café como referente articulador de la economía y la vinculación de esta zona a los procesos de construcción del Estado nacional a fines del siglo XIX y la primera mitad del siglo XX.

Phellinotus, a neotropical genus of wood-decay fungi commonly found on living members of the Fabaceae family, was initially described as containing two species, P. neoaridus and P. piptadeniae. The members of this genus, along with six other well-established genera and some unresolved lineages, are the current representatives of the ‘phellinotus clade’. On the other hand, based on a two-loci phylogenetic analysis, some entities/lineages of the ‘phellinotus clade’ have been found in Fomitiporella s.l. In this work, we performed four-loci phylogenetic analyses and based on our results the genera of the ‘phellinotus clade’ are shown to be monophyletic groups. In addition to the natural groups confirmed as different genera, morphological revisions, phylogenetic relationships, and host distribution of different specimens resembling P. neoaridus and P. piptadeniae revealed three new species in the Phellinotus genus, referred to here as P. magnoporatus, P. teixeirae and P. xerophyticus. Furthermore, for P. piptadeniae a narrower species concept was adopted with redefined morphological characters and a more limited distribution range. Both P. neoaridus and P. teixeirae have a distribution range restricted to seasonally dry tropical forests in South America. Additionally, based on detailed morphological revisions Phellinus badius, Phellinus resinaceus, and Phellinus scaber are transferred to the Phellinotus genus. The geographic distribution and host range of the genus are then discussed.

The rice crop and associated ecosystems constitute a rich mosaic of habitats that preserve a rich biological diversity. Spiders are an abundant and successful group of natural predators that are considered efficient in the biocontrol of the major insect pests in agroecosystems. Spider diversity in different stages of the rice crop growth from eastern Uruguay was analysed. Field study was developed on six rice farms with rotation system with pasture, installed during intercropping stage as cover crop. Six rice crops distributed in three locations were sampled with pitfall and entomological vaccum suction machine. Sixteen families, representing six guilds, were collected. Lycosidae, Linyphiidae, Anyphaenidae and Tetragnathidae were the most abundant families (26%, 25%, 20% and 12%, respectively) and comprised more than 80% of total abundance. Other hunters (29%), sheet web weavers (25%) and ground hunters (24%) were the most abundant guilds. Species composition along different crop stages was significantly different according to the ANOSIM test. The results showed higher spider abundance and diversity along the crop and intercrop stages. This study represents the first contribution to the knowledge of spider diversity associated with rice agroecosystem in the country.

This paper examines two initiatives of learned associations to construct integrating guides to the past in two localities: Manizales, Colombia and San Luis Potosí, Mexico through a description and analysis of the appearance and trajectory of the journals Archivo Historial (1918-1923) and Bohemia (1942-1947). These journals are treated as concrete expressions of the work of the intellectuals of these cities to generate and spread knowledge about the locality and the region. Behind the work is the question about the conditions and activities carried out by the creators of these publishing initiatives in their efforts to search, collect and interpret information in order to generate the milestones that established the local and regional past.

Introducción. Un bezoar se define como un elemento no digerible atrapado en algún punto del tubo digestivo, el cual puede ser ingerido de forma intencional o accidental. El primer reporte de un bezoar en la literatura médica lo hizo Baudamant en 1779. Caso clínico. Se presenta un caso de un bezoar de plástico, un cepillo dental, como causa de pancreatitis aguda y su manejo por laparoscopia, con una revisión de la literatura. Discusión y conclusiones. Aunque los bezoares gástricos son poco frecuentes, y más aún el de plástico, es importante tenerlos en cuenta como causa de pancreatitis aguda. Definitivamente, el abordaje laparoscópico es el ideal en pacientes sin obstrucción intestinal o inestabilidad hemodinámica.

Proyecto desarrollado en la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Pittsburgh como parte del curso Product Realization1. Se desarrollo en conjunto con el Swanson Institute for Technical Excellence2, profesores de la Universidad y empresarios que patrocinaron el proyecto. El equipo interdisciplinario estuvo formado por dos estudiantes de ingeniería mecánica y dos de ingeniería industrial con un tutor especializado en el diseño de piezas mecánicas y moldeo. Los patrocinadores Nick Coniglio y Harry Mellon pertenecen a una empresa dedicada a la producción, venta y alquiler de equipos de asistencia para personas afectadas por problemas respiratorios. Disponian de una patente para desarrollar un humidificador de oxigeno que no precisara el desarme del sistema para la reposición del agua en el interior del vaso. Con esta solución se buscaba solucionar el problema de las llamadas al servicio técnico, ya que más de la mitad de ellas se debían a reclamos en aparatos que fueron desarmados para rellenar el recipiente con agua, y al cerrarlo de nuevo quedaba mal tapado, perdiendo presión y, por consiguiente, funcionando inadecuadamente. Además se buscaba lograr un mecanismo que impida rellenar en exceso el recipiente de agua, ya que en este caso se puede provocar que el oxígeno arrastre gotas de agua, lo que perjudicaría al enfermo.

Rice blast caused by Pyricularia oryzae is a major rice disease worldwide. Despite the detailed knowledge on major resistance genes available to date, little is known about how these genes interact with quantitative blast resistance loci and with the genetic background. Knowledge on these interactions is crucial for assessing the usefulness of introgressed resistance loci in breeding germplasm. Our goal was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for blast resistance in rice breeding populations and to describe how they interact among each other and with the genetic background. To that end, resistance to blast was mapped by genome-wide association study (GWAS) in two advanced rice breeding subpopulations, one made of 305 indica type inbred lines, and the other of 245 tropical japonica inbred lines. The interactions and main effects of blast resistance loci were assessed in a multilocus model. Well known, major effect blast resistance gene clusters were detected in both tropical japonica (Pii/Pi3/Pi5) and indica (Piz/Pi2/Pi9) subpopulations with the GWAS scan 1. When these major effect loci were included as fixed cofactors in subsequent GWAS scans 2 and 3, additional QTL and more complex genetic architectures were revealed. The multilocus model for the tropical japonica subpopulation showed that Pii/Pi3/Pi5 had significant interaction with two QTL in chromosome 1 and one QTL in chromosome 8, together explaining 64% of the phenotypic variance. In the indica subpopulation a significant interaction among the QTL in chromosomes 6 and 4 and the genetic background, together with Piz/Pi2/Pi9 and QTL in chromosomes 1, 4 and 7, explained 35% of the phenotypic variance. Our results suggest that epistatic interactions can play a major role modulating the response mediated by major effect blast resistance loci such as Pii/Pi3/Pi5. Furthermore, the additive and epistatic effects of multiple QTL bring additional layers of quantitative resistance with a magnitude comparable to that of major effect loci. These findings highlight the need of genetic background-specific validation of markers for molecular assisted blast resistance breeding and provide insights for developing quantitative resistance to blast disease in rice.

El presente artículo pretende mostrar algunas particularidades del fenómeno de “colonización antioqueña” en el centro occidente colombiano, en concreto aquellas relacionadas con la numerosa creación de poblados. Así mismo se busca sentar una nueva postura frente a la historiografía tradicional haciendo un esfuerzo por conceptualizar nociones como núcleo urbano, territorio e institucionalización. Se parte de la pregunta de ¿por qué si se trató de un proceso de apertura agraria, se necesitó de la presencia de núcleos urbanos para posibilitar el poblamiento? El argumento que se seguirá para responderla consiste en confirmar que más allá de su rol económico, la presencia de núcleos urbanos en las zonas de apertura de la frontera fue un mecanismo de despliegue del proyecto del Estado Nación presentado a los actores del poblamiento (empresarios y campesinos) como nuevas formas de institucionalidad. Se tomarán como ejemplos los casos de Pereira y Manizales. This paper aims at showcasing some peculiarities of the ‘Antioquian colonization’ phenomenon in central-west Colombia, particularly those related to the creation of numerous villages. It further seeks to put forward a new approach, as opposed to traditional historiography, by conceptualizing notions such as urban area, territory and institutionalization. The main question being, if it was indeed a process of agrarian reform, why was the presence of urban areas necessary in order to consolidate settlement? In view of this, this article argues that despite its economic role, the presence of urban areas in the border opening zones was a deployment mechanism of the nation-State project, which was presented to the settlement actors (businessmen and peasants) as new ways of institutionality. This hypothesis is further supported by the case studies of Pereira and Manizales.

Anthocyanins from maqui (Aristotelia chilensis) and blackberry (Rubus glaucus) were used as light harvesters to improve the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide in visible light. Anthocyanins from both species were obtained using high-frequency ultrasound-assisted liquid-liquid extraction with methanol. Mixtures of anthocyanins were developed to study their effectiveness in the visible light/TiO2 reaction for the oxidation of aniline blue. For this purpose, stainless-steel foams were covered with TiO2 and anthocyanin and characterized by SEM. Different samples were fabricated by varying the ratio of the two anthocyanins in the mixture (100, 75, 50, 25 and 0 vol% of maqui-anthocyanin (delphinidin)). The mixtures of 25 vol% anthocyanin from maqui and 75 vol% anthocyanin from blackberry had higher total anthocyanin content and better photocatalytic activity in visible light: degradation of aniline blue was 40% at pH 7, 56% at pH 3 and 95% at pH 3 with the injection of oxygen for 2 h in comparison with TiO2-foam/UV light, which yielded values of 13% at pH 7 and 73% at pH 3 with and without the addition of oxygen. Natural dyes that are low-cost and environmentally friendly substances are shown to be capable of improving the visible-light photocatalytic activity of TiO2.

Hepatic immune function is compromised during cirrhosis. This study investigated the immune features of liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) in two experimental models of cirrhosis. Dendritic cells, hepatic macrophages, and LSECs were isolated from carbon tetrachloride and bile duct-ligated rats. Gene expression of innate receptors, bacterial internalization, co-stimulatory molecules induction, and CD4+ T cell activation and differentiation were evaluated. Induced bacterial peritonitis and norfloxacin protocols on cirrhotic rats were also carried out. LSECs demonstrated an active immunosurveillance profile, as shown by transcriptional modulation of different scavenger and cell-adhesion genes, and their contribution to bacterial internalization. LSECs significantly increased their expression of CD40 and CD80 and stimulated CD4+ T cell activation marker CD71 in both models. The pro-inflammatory Th17 subset was expanded in CCl4-derived LSECs co-cultures. In the bile duct ligation (BDL) model, CD4+ T cell differentiation only occurred under induced bacterial peritonitis conditions. Differentiated pro-inflammatory Th cells by LSECs in both experimental models were significantly reduced with norfloxacin treatment, whereas Foxp3 tolerogenic Th CD4+ cells were expanded. Conclusion: LSECs’ participation in the innate-adaptive immune progression, their ability to stimulate pro-inflammatory CD4+ T cells expansion during liver damage, and their target role in norfloxacin-induced immunomodulation granted a specific competence to this cell population in cirrhosis.

Piscirickettsia salmons, the causative agent of piscirickettsiosis, is genetically divided into two genomic groups, named after the reference strains as LF-89-like or EM-90-like. Phenotypic differences have been detected between the P. salmonis genogroups, including antibiotic susceptibilities, host specificities and pathogenicity. In this study, we aimed to develop a rapid, sensitive and cost-effective assay for the differentiation of the P. salmonis genogroups. Using an in silico analysis of the P. salmonis 16S rDNA digestion patterns, we have designed a genogroup-specific assay based on PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). An experimental validation was carried out by comparing the restriction patterns of 13 P. salmonis strains and 57 field samples obtained from the tissues of dead or moribund fish. When the bacterial composition of a set of field samples, for which we detected mixtures of bacterial DNA, was analyzed by a high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene amplicons, a diversity of taxa could be identified, including pathogenic and commensal bacteria. Despite the presence of mixtures of bacterial DNA, the characteristic digestion pattern of the P. salmonis genogroups could be detected in the field samples without the need of a microbiological culture and bacterial isolation.

Stem rot and aggregated sheath spot are the two major stem and sheath diseases affecting rice (Oryza sativa L.) in temperate areas. A third fungal disease, sheath blight, is a major disease in tropical areas. Resistance to these diseases is a key objective in rice breeding programs but phenotyping is challenged by the confounding effects of phenological and morphological traits such as flowering time (FT) and plant height (PH). This study sought to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for resistance to these three diseases after removing the confounding effects of FT and PH. Two populations of advanced breeding germplasm, one with 316 tropical japonica and the other with 325 indica genotypes, were evaluated in field and greenhouse trials for resistance to the diseases. Phenotypic means for field and greenhouse disease resistance, adjusted by FT and PH, were analyzed for associations with 29,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in tropical japonica and 50,000 SNPs in indica. A total of 29 QTL were found for resistance that were not associated with FT or PH. Multilocus models with selected resistance-associated SNPs were fitted for each disease to estimate their effects on the other diseases. A QTL on chromosome 9 accounted for more than 15% of the phenotypic variance for the three diseases. When resistance-associated SNPs at this locus from both the tropical japonica and indica populations were incorporated into the model, resistance was improved for all three diseases with little impact on FT and PH.

The progressive decline of the ovarian follicle pool leads to reproductive ageing. The latter is accompanied by age-related disorders, including various types of cancer. In fact, the highest rates of ovarian cancer (OC) occur at postmenopause while OC risk is significantly modulated by parity records during previous fertile life. We approached the age-parity relationship in the C57BL/6 mouse model and herein describe the presence of nonheme iron (hemosiderin) and deposits of the “age pigment” lipofuscin in reproductively aged mouse ovaries by applying conventional histochemical methods and autofluorescence. In addition, the 8-OHdG adduct was evaluated in ovarian genomic DNA. Both hemosiderin and lipofuscin were significantly higher in virgin compared to multiparous ovaries. The same pattern was observed for 8-OHdG. We conclude that nulliparity induces a long-term accumulation of iron and lipofuscin with concomitant oxidative damage to DNA in the mouse ovary. Since lipofuscin is a widely accepted senescence marker and given the recently postulated role of lipofuscin-associated iron as a source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in senescent cells, these findings suggest a possible pathogenic mechanism by which nulliparity contributes to an increased OC risk in the postmenopausal ovary.

Twenty species of corticioid Basidiomycota (Cantharellales, Corticiales, Hymenochaetales, Polyporales, Russulales, Thelephorales) are reported for the first time from Uruguay, extending the known species of this group of fungi to 130 in the country. In addition, Sistotrema biggsiae Hallenb., Peniophora guadelupensis Boidin & Lanq., Phanerochaete cryptocystidiata Nakasone, and Phlebia weldeniana Nakasone & Burds. are new reports for South America. Brief descriptions are provided for Hyphoderma granuliferum P. Roberts, P. guadelupensis, P. cryptocystidiata, Phanerochaete incrustans Parmasto, and Phlebia weldeniana. A key to the known species of Hypochnicium in Uruguay is provided.

Objetivo. Utilizar la prueba de tuberculina en caninos para buscar reservorios de Mycobacterium bovis. Materiales y métodos. Se utilizó la prueba comparada en los caninos que dieron positivo a la PPD ano-caudal, y la técnica de Ziehl-Neelsen en los animales dudosos, para corroborar el resultado. Resultados. Los caninos no son reservorios de la enfermedad, por tal razón, se sugiere utilizar pruebas diagnósticas más específicas para identificar el Mycobacterium en ellos.

Purpose: To report a case of Coats’ disease managed with the dexamethasone intravitreal implant Ozurdex® (Allergan, Inc., Irvine, Calif., USA) combined with retinal photocoagulation. Methods: A 46-year-old female with 20/200 visual acuity was diagnosed with Coats’ disease with secondary retinal vasoproliferative tumor. An initial approach was performed with an intravitreal injection of the sustained-release dexamethasone implant Ozurdex. After reattachment of the retina, the telangiectatic vessels were treated with laser photocoagulation. Results: The patient’s visual acuity improved to 20/25 after the intravitreal Ozurdex. No further recurrences of exudation were evident through the 12-month follow-up. Conclusions: Ozurdex may be an effective initial therapeutic approach for Coats’ disease with immediate anatomical response and visual improvement.

Our objective was to determine the expression of the elements of the Lin28/Let-7 system, and related microRNAs (miRNAs), in early stages of human placentation and ectopic pregnancy, as a means to assess the potential role of this molecular hub in the pathogenesis of ectopic gestation. Seventeen patients suffering from tubal ectopic pregnancy (cases) and forty-three women with normal on-going gestation that desired voluntary termination of pregnancy (VTOP; controls) were recruited for the study. Embryonic tissues were subjected to RNA extraction and quantitative PCR analyses for LIN28B, Let-7a, miR-132, miR-145 and mir-323-3p were performed. Our results demonstrate that the expression of LIN28B mRNA was barely detectable in embryonic tissue from early stages of gestation and sharply increased thereafter to plateau between gestational weeks 7-9. In contrast, expression levels of Let-7, mir-132 and mir-145 were high in embryonic tissue from early gestations (≤ 6-weeks) and abruptly declined thereafter, especially for Let-7. Opposite trends were detected for mir-323-3p. Embryonic expression of LIN28B mRNA was higher in early stages (≤ 6-weeks) of ectopic pregnancy than in normal gestation. In contrast, Let-7a expression was significantly lower in early ectopic pregnancies, while miR-132 and miR-145 levels were not altered. Expression of mir-323-3p was also suppressed in ectopic embryonic tissue. We are the first to document reciprocal changes in the expression profiles of the gene encoding the RNA-binding protein, LIN28B, and the related miRNAs, Let-7a, mir-132 and mir-145, in early stages of human placentation. This finding suggests the potential involvement of LIN28B/Let-7 (de)regulated pathways in the pathophysiology of ectopic pregnancy in humans.

Invasion of the trophoblast into the maternal decidua is regulated by both the trophoectoderm and the endometrial stroma, and entails the action of tissue remodeling enzymes. Trophoblast invasion requires the action of metalloproteinases (MMPs) to degrade extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and in turn, decidual cells express tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMPs). The balance between these promoting and restraining factors is a key event for the successful outcome of pregnancy. Gene expression is post-transcriptionally regulated by histone deacetylases (HDACs) that unpacks condensed chromatin activating gene expression. In this study we analyze the effect of histone acetylation on the expression of tissue remodeling enzymes and activity of human endometrial stromal cells (hESCs) related to trophoblast invasion control. Treatment of hESCs with the HDAC inhibitor trichostatin A (TSA) increased the expression of TIMP-1 and TIMP-3 while decreased MMP-2, MMP-9 and uPA and have an inhibitory effect on trophoblast invasion. Moreover, histone acetylation is detected at the promoters of TIMP-1 and TIMP-3 genes in TSA-treated. In addition, in an in vitro decidualized hESCs model, the increase of TIMP-1 and TIMP-3 expression is associated with histone acetylation at the promoters of these genes. Our results demonstrate that histone acetylation disrupt the balance of ECM modulators provoking a restrain of trophoblast invasion. These findings are important as an epigenetic mechanism that can be used to control trophoblast invasion.

Decidualization is a morphological and biochemical transformation of endometrial stromal fibroblast into differentiated decidual cells, which is critical for embryo implantation and pregnancy establishment. The complex regulatory networks have been elucidated at both the transcriptome and the proteome levels, however very little is known about the post-transcriptional regulation of this process. miRNAs regulate multiple physiological pathways and their de-regulation is associated with human disorders including gynaecological conditions such as endometriosis and preeclampsia. In this study we profile the miRNAs expression throughout human endometrial stromal (hESCs) decidualization and analyze the requirement of the miRNA biogenesis enzyme Dicer during this process. A total of 26 miRNAs were upregulated and 17 miRNAs downregulated in decidualized hESCs compared to non-decidualized hESCs. Three miRNAs families, miR-181, miR-183 and miR-200, are down-regulated during the decidualization process. Using miRNAs target prediction algorithms we have identified the potential targets and pathways regulated by these miRNAs. The knockdown of Dicer has a minor effect on hESCs during in vitro decidualization. We have analyzed a battery of decidualization markers such as cell morphology, Prolactin, IGFBP-1, MPIF-1 and TIMP-3 secretion as well as HOXA10, COX2, SP1, C/EBPß and FOXO1 expression in decidualized hESCs with decreased Dicer function. We found decreased levels of HOXA10 and altered intracellular organization of actin filaments in Dicer knockdown decidualized hESCs compared to control. Our results provide the miRNA signature of hESC during the decidualization process in vitro. We also provide the first functional characterization of Dicer during human endometrial decidualization although surprisingly we found that Dicer plays a minor role regulating this process suggesting that alternative biogenesis miRNAs pathways must be involved in human endometrial decidualization.

Species from different fungal genera have been indicated as responsible for the development of trunk diseases of grapevines. Greeneria uvicola is responsible for the bitter rot of Vitis vinifera grape bunchesnear harvest, and can also attack other Vitis species. In Uruguay, G. uvicola was isolated from dead arm affected grapevines and as an endophyte from healthy canes. Cadophora luteo-olivacea is a phialophora-likeascomycete with a wide distribution that was isolated from asymptomatic wood tissues in Vitis and Petridisease-affected nursery plants in Uruguay. Pathogenicity of isolates of both species was evaluated on Vitis vinifera cv. Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon, and rootstocks SO4 and 3309C. Specific primers were developed for the ITS rDNA region for both species. Number of plants showing discoloration, length of discoloration, number of re-isolations and amplifications confirmed the pathogenicity of G. uvicola isolates. Pathogenicityof the isolate of C. luteo-olivacea obtained from symptomatic tissues is discussed. Specific primers can be usedto detect the presence of these fungi in asymptomatic tissues.

Resumen El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar la utilización de la cirugía piezoeléctrica exponiendo los conceptos fundamentales que ésta involucra: menor morbidad, más precisión, reducción de maniobras clínicas y disminución en los tiempos de cicatrización, debido al uso de instrumental de función controlada. Desarrollando las distintas alternativas terapéuticas, con protocolos de ejecución acordes a las resoluciones clínicas a abordar, para finalmente aplicar una clasificación que marca las posibilidades y bondades que tecnológicamente esta herramienta aporta, sobre todo para el campo de la cirugía preimplantológica y como complemento al tratamiento apical postendodóntico. BackgroundUnderstanding the molecular basis of embryonic implantation is of great clinical and biological relevance. Little is currently known about the adhesion receptors that determine endometrial receptivity for embryonic implantation in humans.Methods and principal findingsUsing two human endometrial cell lines characterized by low and high receptivity, we identified the membrane receptor CD98 as a novel molecule selectively and significantly associated with the receptive phenotype. In human endometrial samples, CD98 was the only molecule studied whose expression was restricted to the implantation window in human endometrial tissue. CD98 expression was restricted to the apical surface and included in tetraspanin-enriched microdomains of primary endometrial epithelial cells, as demonstrated by the biochemical association between CD98 and tetraspanin CD9. CD98 expression was induced in vitro by treatment of primary endometrial epithelial cells with human chorionic gonadotropin, 17-β-estradiol, LIF or EGF. Endometrial overexpression of CD98 or tetraspanin CD9 greatly enhanced mouse blastocyst adhesion, while their siRNA-mediated depletion reduced the blastocyst adhesion rate.ConclusionsThese results indicate that CD98, a component of tetraspanin-enriched microdomains, appears to be an important determinant of human endometrial receptivity during the implantation window.

Introducción. Un bezoar se define como un elemento no digerible atrapado en algún punto del tubo digestivo, el cual puede ser ingerido de forma intencional o accidental. El primer reporte de un bezoar en la literatura médica lo hizo Baudamant en 1779. Caso clínico. Se presenta un caso de un bezoar de plástico, un cepillo dental, como causa de pancreatitis aguda y su manejo por laparoscopia, con una revisión de la literatura. Discusión y conclusiones. Aunque los bezoares gástricos son poco frecuentes, y más aún el de plástico, es importante tenerlos en cuenta como causa de pancreatitis aguda. Definitivamente, el abordaje laparoscópico es el ideal en pacientes sin obstrucción intestinal o inestabilidad hemodinámica.
