Objetivo. Describir las experiencias de la Comisión Nacional Asesora de Eventos Supuestamente Atribuibles a la Vacunación o Inmunización (ESAVI) graves implementada en Ecuador en el período 2020-2023. Método. Se realizó un informe que analiza la implementación, el funcionamiento y los resultados de la Comisión Nacional Asesora sobre ESAVI graves en Ecuador. Se realizó un análisis cuantitativo de los registros de vacunación y un análisis cualitativo con base en testimonios de expertos, que recoge las experiencias directas y desafíos operacionales enfrentados por los miembros de la Comisión. Resultados. La implementación de la Comisión ha permitido el registro y el análisis sistemático de los ESAVI graves. De 256 casos notificados, se analizaron 139; 59% como eventos coincidentes; 16,6% no clasificables; 6,5% indeterminados; 5% como eventos por estrés; 3,6% como eventos relacionados con un error programático, y 9,4% relacionados con la vacuna, que incluyeron alergias, síndrome de Guillain-Barré y trombosis, entre otros. Los testimonios de los expertos destacaron la necesidad de mejorar la capacitación del personal y la infraestructura tecnológica, y compartieron que la Comisión desempeñó un papel crucial en la vigilancia de la seguridad de las vacunas, además de incrementar la confianza de la población en los procesos de vacunación. Conclusiones. La Comisión Nacional Asesora ha sido esencial en la vigilancia de la seguridad de las vacunas en Ecuador, ya que garantiza la notificación, el análisis de causalidad y la investigación de los ESAVI graves. Se identificaron desafíos que deberán ser abordados para mantener la confianza pública en los programas de vacunación.

Abstract This sub-analysis of the ePREDICE trial, investigated the prevalence and determinants of renal complications, specifically glomerular hyperfiltration, albuminuria, and reduced kidney function, in individuals with prediabetes (PD). The cohort consisted of 967 participants from diverse backgrounds across seven countries. The kidney function was evaluated using the MDRD-4 equation, and the influence of various clinical and demographic factors on renal involvement was assessed by multivariable regression models. Additionally, insulinogenic and disposition indices were examined. Overall, the prevalence of renal abnormalities in this PD cohort was 9.2% (n = 89). Key findings included the detection of hyperfiltration in 20 (2%) individuals, albuminuria in 45 (4.7%), and CKD stage G3a in 29 (3%). Hyperfiltration was inversely correlated with age and height, while albuminuria showed a significant direct association with the disposition index (DI). Age and waist circumference were significantly and directly associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The ePREDICE study highlights critical factors that affect renal involvement in PD individuals, revealing complex interactions among various parameters. These findings further emphasize the necessity for the search of early kidney abnormalities in people with PD especially in those in older age groups and with a large waist circumference.

Abstract This study aims to validate the five repetition sit to stand test (5R-STS) test as a measure of strength and functionality in adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). The sample was made up of 159 subjects with ID (85 adolescents and 74 adults) of both sexes, with average age of 18.36 (5.26) years, belonging to four special educational centers from Santiago, Chile. Absolute (AHGS) and relative (RHGS) handgrip strength and countermovement jump (CMJ) were considered as muscle strength evaluation tests. The timed up and go (TUG) and agility test 4 × 10 m were considered as functional tests. Spearman and intraclass correlations, as well as Bland-Altman plots were used to establish the respective correlations. Abstract Background Marine sponges and their microbiomes are ecosystem engineers distributed across the globe. However, most research has focused on tropical and temperate sponges, while polar regions like Antarctica have been largely neglected. Despite its harsh conditions and geographical isolation, Antarctica is densely populated by sponges. In this study, we explored the extent of habitat specificity in the diversity, community composition, and microbial co-occurrence within Antarctic sponge microbiomes, in comparison to those from other marine environments. We used massive sequencing of 16S rRNA genes and integrated multiple databases to incorporate Antarctic sponges as a habitat in global microbiome analyses. Results Our study revealed significant differences in microbial diversity and community composition between Antarctic and non-Antarctic sponges. We found that most microorganisms present in Antarctic sponges are unique to the South Shetland Islands. Nitrosomonas oligotropha, Candidatus Nitrosopumilus, Polaribacter, SAR116 clade, and Low Salinity Nitrite-Oxidizing Bacteria (LS-NOB) are microbial members characterizing the Antarctic sponge microbiomes. Based on their exclusivity and presence across different sponges worldwide, we identified habitat-specific and habitat-generalist bacteria associated with each habitat. They are particularly abundant and connected within all the Antarctic sponges, suggesting that they may play a crucial role as keystone species within these sponge ecosystems. Conclusions This study provides significant insights into the microbial diversity and community composition of sponges in Antarctica and non-Antarctic ecoregions. Our findings provide evidence for habitat-specific patterns that differentiate the microbiomes of Antarctic sponges from elsewhere, indicating the strong influence of environmental selection and dispersal limitation wrapped into the Antarctic ecoregions to shape more similar microbial communities in distantly related sponges. This study contributes to understanding signatures of microbial community assembly in the Antarctic sponges and has important implications for the ecology and evolution of these unique marine environments.

Objective. To determine the distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes in invasive cervical cancer samples from Ecuadorian women who attended the Cancer Institute (Sociedad de Lucha Contra el Cáncer – SOLCA). Methods. Archived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) cervical cancer tissue samples collected during 2017–2021 were deparaffinized, and nucleic acid extraction and purification was performed using silica columns. The obtained nucleic acids were analyzed using INNO-LiPA® HPV Genotyping Extra II per the manufacturer’s specifications. Data were retrieved from records, and HPV genotypes were determined from the FFPE samples. Results. The study included samples from 190 women diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer, with a median age of 52.78 years. Squamous cell carcinoma accounted for 78.94% of the cases, while 21.05% had adenocarcinoma. Among the 190 samples, 80.53% tested positive for HPV DNA, while 19.47% were negative. The most common genotypes detected were HPV 16 (64.05%), 18 (16.99%), and 58 (6.54%). HPV infection frequency was higher in samples from patients with elementary level education (p < 0.05). Conclusions. This study provides valuable insights into the distribution of HPV genotypes in invasive cervical cancer samples from Ecuadorian women. The results indicate an elevated presence of HPV 16, HPV 18, and HPV 58, which are vaccine-preventable genotypes.

Abstract The introduction of electroweak multiplets that transform under any representation of the standard SU(2) L gauge group suggests the existence of electrically neutral stable particles capable of serving as cold dark matter in the ΛCDM cosmological model. This paradigm, known as minimal dark matter, has primarily focused on spin-0 and spin-1/2 particles. We extend this study to the spin-1 case using the 5-dimensional real representation. We address unitarity concerns arising from the model’s interactions with electroweak and Higgs fields of the Standard Model, investigating implications for dark matter relic density, direct and indirect detection, including non-perturbative Sommerfeld enhancement for the latter. Collider signatures of the proposed model are also examined. Our findings suggest that the model remains consistent with experimental constraints, particularly for dark matter masses on the order of dozens of TeV, and could potentially be tested using γ-ray observatories such as CTA.

Abstract Background Bacteria of the genus Borrelia are agents of disease in both domestic animals and humans and pose a significant public health risk. Borrelia species have complex transmission cycles, often using rodents as vertebrate reservoir hosts. These bacteria are classified into three well-defined monophyletic groups: Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl) complex, the relapsing fever (RF) group, and a third group associated with reptiles and echidnas. Moreover, a new group of Borrelia associated with rodents has recently been proposed, as these bacteria form a phylogenetic group separated from the previously mentioned groups. This study aimed to investigate the presence of DNA of Borrelia spirochetes in rodents in specific areas of the Colombian Caribbean. Methods A total of 155 rodent spleen samples were selected from the tissue bank. These samples were obtained in the departments of La Guajira and Córdoba (Northern Colombia). DNA extraction and specific real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting Borrelia 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene were performed, followed by nested PCR (nPCR) on positive samples to obtain larger fragments of the 16S rRNA gene and characterize the flaB gene. Alignments of generated sequences and ortholog sequences downloaded from Genbank were performed in Clustal Omega. A phylogenetic tree was built with the maximum likelihood method in IQTREE. Results Spleen samples from rodents of the genera Heteromys, Mus, Necromys, Olygoryzomys, Proechymis, Rattus, Sigmodon, and Zygodontomys were processed. Overall, 6.5% (4/162) of the animals tested positive for Borrelia by real-time PCR. All quantitative PCR (qPCR)-positive samples were also positive for nPCR targeting the 16S rRNA gene, yielding fragments of 344–408 bp and 603–673 bp from two Sigmodon rodents and two Zygodontomys rodents from La Guajira and Córdoba. All samples were negative for the flaB gene. Only samples from Zygodontomys rodents presented good quality sequences. A BLASTn analysis showed a percentage of identity ranging between 98.16 and 96.06% with Borrelia sp. R57. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that sequences of the present study clustered with species of the recently proposed Borrelia “rodent group.” Conclusions This is the first detection of borreliae of the “rodent group” in South America. Our results reaffirm the occurrence of a group of spirochetes associated with rodents, extending its geographic distribution to the Colombian Caribbean. Graphical abstract

Abstract Bariatric surgery is effective for the treatment and remission of obesity and type 2 diabetes, but pharmacological approaches which exert similar metabolic adaptations are needed to avoid post-surgical complications. Here we show how G49, an oxyntomodulin (OXM) analog and dual glucagon/glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GCGR/GLP-1R) agonist, triggers an inter-organ crosstalk between adipose tissue, pancreas, and liver which is initiated by a rapid release of free fatty acids (FFAs) by white adipose tissue (WAT) in a GCGR-dependent manner. This interactome leads to elevations in adiponectin and fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), causing WAT beiging, brown adipose tissue (BAT) activation, increased energy expenditure (EE) and weight loss. Elevation of OXM, under basal and postprandial conditions, and similar metabolic adaptations after G49 treatment were found in plasma from patients with obesity early after metabolic bariatric surgery. These results identify G49 as a potential pharmacological alternative sharing with bariatric surgery hormonal and metabolic pathways.

The Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima (TTA) region is one of the main olive oil producing regions in Morocco. Little is devoted to characterize olive oil physicochemical traits from TTA hence the originality of this study. This aimed at investigating variation in olive oil quality produced from three Moroccan cultivars ‘Moroccan Picholine’, ‘Menara’, and ‘Haouzia’ and their blends. Sampling was performed in five provinces fromTTA (Northern Morocco) during four consecutive crop-seasons (2018–2021) considering three extraction technologies (ET): traditional discontinuous press system (SP) and continuous extraction systems including decanter of three outlets (3O) and decanter of two outlets (2O). Physicochemical measurements consisted of routinely quality parameters namely free acidity (FA), peroxide value (PV), UV absorption parameters (K232, K270, and ΔK), chlorophylls (Chl) and carotenoids (Car) contents, total phenolic compounds (TPC) and oxidative stability (OS). Abstract Background Cross-validation techniques in genetic evaluations encounter limitations due to the unobservable nature of breeding values and the challenge of validating estimated breeding values (EBVs) against pre-corrected phenotypes, challenges which the Linear Regression (LR) method addresses as an alternative. Furthermore, beef cattle genetic evaluation programs confront challenges with connectedness among herds and pedigree errors. The objective of this work was to evaluate the LR method's performance under pedigree errors and weak connectedness typical in beef cattle genetic evaluations, through simulation. Methods We simulated a beef cattle population resembling the Argentinean Brangus, including a quantitative trait selected over six pseudo-generations with a heritability of 0.4. This study considered various scenarios, including: 25% and 40% pedigree errors (PE-25 and PE-40), weak and strong connectedness among herds (WCO and SCO, respectively), and a benchmark scenario (BEN) with complete pedigree and optimal herd connections. Results Over six pseudo-generations of selection, genetic gain was simulated to be under- and over-estimated in PE-40 and WCO, respectively, contrary to the BEN scenario which was unbiased. In genetic evaluations with PE-25 and PE-40, true biases of − 0.13 and − 0.18 genetic standard deviations were simulated, respectively. In the BEN scenario, the LR method accurately estimated bias, however, in PE-25 and PE-40 scenarios, it overestimated biases by 0.17 and 0.25 genetic standard deviations, respectively. In herds facing WCO, significant true bias due to confounding environmental and genetic effects was simulated, and the corresponding LR statistic failed to accurately estimate the magnitude and direction of this bias. On average, true dispersion values were close to one for BEN, PE-40, SCO and WCO, showing no significant inflation or deflation, and the values were accurately estimated by LR. However, PE-25 exhibited inflation of EBVs and was slightly underestimated by LR. Accuracies and reliabilities showed good agreement between true and LR estimated values for the scenarios evaluated. Conclusions The LR method demonstrated limitations in identifying biases induced by incomplete pedigrees, including scenarios with as much as 40% pedigree errors, or lack of connectedness, but it was effective in assessing dispersion, and population accuracies and reliabilities even in the challenging scenarios addressed.

Abstract Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a debilitating and fatal paralytic disorder associated with motor neuron death. Mutant superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) misfolding and aggregation have been linked to familial ALS, with the accumulation of abnormal wild-type SOD1 species being also observed in postmortem tissue of sporadic ALS cases. Both wild-type and mutated SOD1 are reported to contribute to motoneuron cell death. The autophagic pathway has been shown to be dysregulated in ALS. Recent evidence suggests a dual time-dependent role of autophagy in the progression of the disease. PACER, also called RUBCNL (Rubicon-like), is an enhancer of autophagy and has been found diminished in its levels during ALS pathology in mice and humans. Pacer loss of function disturbs the autophagy process and leads to the accumulation of SOD1 aggregates, as well as sensitizes neurons to death. Therefore, here we investigated if constitutive overexpression of PACER in neurons since early development is beneficial in an in vivo model of ALS. We generated a transgenic mouse model overexpressing human PACER in neurons, which then was crossbred with the mutant SOD1G93A ALS mouse model. Unexpectedly, PACER/SOD1G93A double transgenic mice exhibited an earlier disease onset and shorter lifespan than did littermate SOD1G93A mice. The overexpression of PACER in neurons in vivo and in vitro increased the accumulation of SOD1 aggregates, possibly due to impaired autophagy. These results suggest that similar to Pacer loss-of function, Pacer gain-of function is detrimental to autophagy, increases SOD1 aggregation and worsens ALS pathogenesis. In a wider context, our results indicate the requirement to maintain a fine balance of PACER protein levels to sustain proteostasis.

Abstract Cultural heritage, both in its tangible and intangible dimensions, is a very influential element that is closely connected with history education and with identity-building. The present study seeks to identify the cultural iconic elements that pre-service social science educators associate with the history of Spain, as well as their sources of information. A semi-structured questionnaire was administered to 668 prospective teachers of four Spanish regions who were enroled in bachelor’s degrees in primary education. Participants were asked to spontaneously name the four iconic elements (monuments, works of art, places, festivities, traditions, etc.) that they considered the most representative of Spanish history. Finally, they were asked about the sources of information that they used in order to gain knowledge about these elements. Results revealed that some iconic elements connected with cultural and historical heritage were predominant in the collective consciousness of trainee teachers. Furthermore, while the influence of school was noticeable, an even stronger influence of the social context and families was detected in their selection. Results suggest that the educational potential of cultural icons that are familiar to learners should be used in initial teacher training and history education. This would allow prospective teachers to promote engagement and develop an understanding of historical multiperspectivity among their students, fostering critical citizenship.

Jaguar populations (Panthera onca) on the Ecuadorian coast are critically endangered, with only a few dozen individuals remaining in the region. In some areas, no records have been documented for decades. Between November 2023 and January 2024, independent camera trap monitoring in northwestern Ecuador yielded evidence of the presence of a jaguar, marking a significant recovery after seven years of absence in Manduriacu and at least 15 years in Junín. The jaguar was observed moving through an area of approximately 25 km, traversing forested and human-altered zones. Furthermore, additional evidence from the Ecominga Foundation and the Cielo Verde community indicated the occurrence of livestock attacks, which aligns with the typical predatory patterns observed in jaguar behavior. The attack site was located approximately 8 km from where the jaguar was initially recorded, suggesting that both events refer to the same individual. In response, local authorities inspected the area and organized community workshops. Furthermore, an Andean bear was recorded in Manduriacu during the same sampling period, confirming the co-occurrence of both species in the area. The documented movement of this jaguar, along with the presence of other species, underscores the imperative need to continue research and conservation initiatives in the region. These initiatives will ensure the protection and coexistence of wildlife and human populations in this highly biodiverse region.

Abstract Generalized global symmetries, in particular non-invertible and categorical symmetries, have become a focal point in the recent study of quantum field theory (QFT). In this paper, we investigate aspects of symmetry topological field theories (SymTFTs) and anomalies of non-invertible symmetries for 2D QFTs from a string theory perspective. Our primary focus is on an infinite class of 2D QFTs engineered on D1-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 4-fold singularities. We derive 3D SymTFTs from the topological sector of IIB supergravity and discuss the resulting 2D QFTs, which can be intrinsically relative or absolute. For intrinsically relative QFTs, we propose a sufficient condition for them to exist. For absolute QFTs, we show that they exhibit non-invertible symmetries with an elegant brane origin. Furthermore, we find that these non-invertible symmetries can suffer from anomalies, which we discuss from a top-down perspective. Explicit examples are provided, including theories for Y (p,k)(ℙ2), Y (2,0)(ℙ1 × ℙ1), and ℂ4/ℤ4 geometries.

Abstract Background Splenectomy indications are well documented; however, several infectious complications and potentially life-threatening conditions could arise after splenectomy. We aim to describe a 20-year single-center experience of postoperative outcomes after splenectomy and perform a subgroup analysis according to approach and surgical setting with a 30-day, 90-day, and 1-year follow-up. Study design A retrospective cohort study was conducted between 2003 and 2023. We included all patients aged 18 years and older who underwent splenectomy. A description of clinical and operative variables with infectious outcomes was performed. Subgroup analyses were performed between open or laparoscopic approach and surgical setting. Results A total of 134 patients were included. Female patients constituted 52.99% (n = 71) of cases, with a mean age of 51.01 ± 20.79 years. The most frequent surgical indication for splenectomy was trauma in 31.34% (n = 42), and a laparoscopic approach was indicated in 41.79% (n = 56). Overwhelming post-splenectomy syndrome (OPSI) was evidenced in 2.24% (n = 3) of the population. Surgical characteristics such as operative time, intraoperative blood loss, and intensive care requirement and unit length of stay were higher in open and trauma patients. Conclusion Our data describe the demographic, clinical and operative characteristics of patients undergoing splenectomy in Colombia, providing a solid basis for future research. The results obtained on overwhelming postsplenectomy syndrome (OPSI) and postoperative complications are comparable with those reported in the international literature, reinforcing the validity of our findings. Further prospective studies in this population are needed to optimize management strategies and improve clinical outcomes, particularly in higher risk subgroups.

Abstract Natural hybridisation in plants can impact genetic and morphological diversity, including the emergence of better-adapted new populations and the potential extinction of some lineages involved in this intricate process. Under progressive global warming, species often need to migrate to newly suitable areas, which may be an additional challenge for species with low dispersal ability. Throughout the search for new environments, previously allopatric lineages can come into secondary contact and eventually hybridise if reproductive isolation is incomplete. Here, we focused on two taxa representing the natural herbaceous component of southern South American lowland grasslands. We aimed to evaluate the impact of contact zones and potential hybridisation on the evolutionary relationships and population dynamics. We used single nucleotide polymorphisms and morphological data of multiple individuals from allopatric and contact zones between taxa to shed light on hybridisation patterns and demographic scenarios. Our results indicated that the contact zones impact taxa’s genetic and morphological diversity, and each contact zone had different patterns of genetic diversity and morphology, constituting stable populations that potentially reflect hybridisation events occurring at distinct evolutionary times.

Abstract Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by the loss of motoneurons (MNs), and despite progress, there is no effective treatment. A large body of evidence shows that astrocytes expressing ALS-linked mutant proteins cause non-cell autonomous toxicity of MNs. Although MNs innervate muscle fibers and ALS is characterized by the early disruption of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) and axon degeneration, there are controversies about whether muscle contributes to non-cell-autonomous toxicity to MNs. In this study, we generated primary skeletal myotubes from myoblasts derived from ALS mice expressing human mutant SOD1G93A (termed hereafter mutSOD1). Characterization revealed that mutSOD1 skeletal myotubes display intrinsic phenotypic and functional differences compared to control myotubes generated from non-transgenic (NTg) littermates. Next, we analyzed whether ALS myotubes exert non-cell-autonomous toxicity to MNs. We report that conditioned media from mutSOD1 myotubes (mutSOD1-MCM), but not from control myotubes (NTg-MCM), induced robust death of primary MNs in mixed spinal cord cultures and compartmentalized microfluidic chambers. Our study further revealed that applying mutSOD1-MCM to the MN axonal side in microfluidic devices rapidly reduces mitochondrial axonal transport while increasing Ca2 + transients and reactive oxygen species (i.e., H2O2). These results indicate that soluble factor(s) released by mutSOD1 myotubes cause MN axonopathy that leads to lethal pathogenic changes.

During a parasitological survey of tapeworms from Myliobatis goodei Garman, 1885 (Myliobatiformes: Myliobatidae) in coastal waters off Argentina in the Southwestern Atlantic, a new rhinebothriidean cestode species, Anindobothrium danielae sp. nov., is described using morphological and molecular techniques. This species differs from its congeners by a particular combination of features, including the configuration of the bothridia, the number of marginal loculi, and the number and distribution of testes. Additionally, Anindobothrium myliobatidis comb. nov. is proposed based on several morphological traits, including the presence of stalked bothridia with marginal loculi and an apical sucker, euapolytic strobila, and postvaginal testes. The diagnosis of the genus Anindobothrium Marques, Brooks & Lasso, 2001 is amended to include the features exhibited by these two species; two species subsets are suggested based on the configuration of the bothridia. The presence of A. danielae sp. nov. and A. myliobatidis comb. nov. in the studied area not only increases the number of cestodes in M. goodei here from eight to ten but also represents the first report of a rhinebothriidean cestode parasitizing stingrays of the family Myliobatidae in the Southwestern Atlantic.

Abstract A new type of quiver theories, denoted twin quivers, was recently introduced for studying 5d SCFTs engineered by webs of 5-branes ending on 7-branes. Twin quivers provide an alternative perspective on various aspects of such webs, including Hanany-Witten moves and the s-rule. More ambitiously, they can be regarded as a first step towards the construction of combinatorial objects, generalizing brane tilings, encoding the corresponding BPS quivers. This paper continues the investigation of twin quivers, focusing on their non-uniqueness, which stems from the multiplicity of toric phases for a given toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We find that the different twin quivers are necessary for describing what we call quiver tails, which in turn correspond to certain sub-configurations in the webs. More generally, the multiplicity of twin quivers captures the roots of the Higgs branch in the extended Coulomb branch of 5d theories.

Abstract Hake, a key species in global seafood trade, substantially influences market dynamics and consumption patterns. This study delves into the global hake trade network (HGTN), spotlighting the roles and connections of key countries such as Spain, Namibia, Argentina, South Africa, the USA, and Italy, with Spain being the primary importer and countries like Namibia and South Africa notable exporters. Our findings unveil a multifaceted trade network, with Spain and Namibia as central nodes, and reveal growth in trade volume and value, signifying an evolving marketplace. The network’s susceptibility to economic, political, and ecological shifts underscores the necessity for resilient, adaptable trading practices to sustainably manage hake trade. Our findings emphasise the importance of managing resources and maintaining market balance to support global food security and reflect the dynamic seafood industry.

Abstract Phonon polaritons – quasiparticles formed by strong coupling of infrared (IR) light with lattice vibrations in polar materials – can be utilized for surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy and even for vibrational strong coupling with nanoscale amounts of molecules. Here, we introduce and demonstrate a compact on-chip phononic SEIRA spectroscopy platform, which is based on an h-BN/graphene/h-BN heterostructure on top of a metal split-gate creating a p-n junction in graphene. The metal split-gate concentrates the incident light and launches hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) in the heterostructure, which serves simultaneously as SEIRA substrate and room-temperature infrared detector. When thin organic layers are deposited directly on top of the heterostructure, we observe a photocurrent encoding the layer’s molecular vibrational fingerprint, which is strongly enhanced compared to that observed in standard far-field absorption spectroscopy. A detailed theoretical analysis supports our results, further predicting an additional sensitivity enhancement as the molecular layers approach deep subwavelength scales. Future on-chip integration of infrared light sources such as quantum cascade lasers or even electrical generation of the HPhPs could lead to fully on-chip phononic SEIRA sensors for molecular and gas sensing.

Objetivo. Describir la metodología de la búsqueda intencionada y reclasificación de muertes maternas (BIRMM), que permite identificar y corregir la clasificación errónea y el subregistro de defunciones maternas. Métodos. Se utiliza la metodología BIRMM, desarrollada inicialmente en México en el 2003 y difundida en otros países de América Latina a partir del 2012. La BIRMM consta de cuatro componentes clave: i) reclasificación de muertes maternas confirmadas; ii) identificación e investigación de casos sospechosos de muerte materna; iii) confronta con otras fuentes de información; y iv) publicación de resultados y análisis estadístico de la mortalidad materna. Resultados. La aplicación de la BIRMM permite identificar y analizar las muertes maternas en comités de mortalidad materna, lo que ha facilitado la implementación de planes de respuesta efectivos, contribuyendo a una reducción sostenida de la mortalidad materna en los países. Conclusiones. La metodología BIRMM es una herramienta efectiva para corregir el subregistro y la mala clasificación de muertes maternas, lo que permite una mejor vigilancia y respuesta a este problema. Su adopción y ejecución rutinaria son esenciales para mejorar la calidad de la información sobre mortalidad materna y reducir las muertes maternas en la Región de las Américas. La sostenibilidad de esta metodología depende del compromiso institucional y la voluntad política en los países.

Abstract Introduction Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common and potentially lethal disease. Approximately 10–20% of the patients progress to necrotizing pancreatitis (NP). The step-up approach is the gold standard approach to managing an infected necrotizing pancreatitis with acceptable morbidity and mortality rates. Video-assisted retroperitoneal debridement (VARD) has been described as a safe and feasible approach with high success rates. Multiple studies in the American, European, and Asian populations evaluating the outcomes of VARD have been published; nevertheless, outcomes in the Latin American population are unknown. This study aims to describe a single-center experience of VARD for necrotizing pancreatitis in Colombia with a long-term follow-up. Methods A prospective cohort study was conducted between 2016 and 2024. All patients over 18 years old who underwent VARD for necrotizing pancreatitis were included. Demographic, clinical variables, and postoperative outcomes at 30-day follow-up were described. Results A total of 12 patients were included. The mean age was 55.9 years old (SD 13.73). The median follow-up was 365 days (P25 60; P75 547). Bile origin was the most frequent cause of pancreatitis in 90.1% of the patients. The mean time between diagnosis and surgical management was 78.5 days (SD 22.93). The mean size of the collection was 10.5 cm (SD 3.51). There was no evidence of intraoperative complications. The mean in-hospital length of stay was 65.18 days (SD 26.46). One patient died in a 30-day follow-up. One patient presented an incisional hernia one year after surgery, and there was no evidence of endocrine insufficiency at the follow-up. Conclusion According to our data, the VARD procedure presents similar outcomes to those reported in the literature; a standardized procedure following the STEP-UP procedure minimizes the requirement of postoperative drainages. Long-term follow-up should be performed to rule out pancreatic insufficiency.

Abstract Background Hearing loss in older adults affects general, generic health-related and disease-specific quality of life (QoL). The conventional strategy to address it is through hearing aids, which have been shown to improve disease-specific QoL. However, the long-term results regarding general quality of life are unknown, and communication problems and stigma associated with hearing loss may persist. An effective intervention strategy to address these problems is group communication programs, most notably Active Communication Education (ACE). This program has been shown to increase communication strategies and reduce communication activity limitations and participation restrictions. These precedents allow us to hypothesize that this program could improve general QoL. Methods A randomized clinical trial was conducted on 114 older adult hearing aid users. Fifty-four subjects composed the intervention group that received the ACE program, while 60 subjects composed the control group that received an informational-lectures type intervention. The WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire was used to measure general QoL. Measurements were taken before and right after the intervention, with follow-ups at 6 and 12 months. Multilevel linear mixed models were estimated, considering the WHOQOL-BREF dimension scores and total score as the outcomes, and an interaction term between time since intervention and group as the predictor. Within- and between-group comparisons were made. Results Compared to the baseline time-point, the ACE group showed significant improvements right after the intervention, and at the 6-month and 12-month follow-ups for the dimensions of psychological health, social relationships, environment, and total score. Compared to the control group, the ACE group exhibited significantly greater improvements in the social dimension at all postintervention assessments, as well as in the environment dimension and total score at the 12-month follow-up. Conclusions The ACE program improved general QoL in terms of social relationships and environment dimensions, which lasted up to 12 months after the intervention. Therefore, ACE is positioned as an effective complement for HA users, enhancing and delivering new benefits related to broader aspects of QoL not necessarily tied to health. This article offers a comprehensive examination of perspectives on university-industry interactions in Latin America. Distinguishing itself from international reviews, the study employs a systematic review of 274 articles across Scopus, Scielo, and Dialnet databases. The research addresses the temporal evolution, disciplinary fields, conceptual approaches, methods, and prevailing topics in the region. Findings reveal a focus on management, economics, business, social sciences, and engineering disciplines. Qualitative methods dominate, while theoretical-conceptual approaches encompass meso-institutional and micro-interactional levels. Key research themes include collaboration results, knowledge transfer, innovation, technological transfer, and collaboration barriers.

Preterm neonate of 35+4 weeks, delivered by cesarean section due to non-reassuring fetal status. Prenatal ultrasound history of intrauterine growth restriction, cardiac malformations, and suspected central nervous system abnormalities. At birth, the neonate presented with a dysmorphic syndrome, choanal atresia, low ear implantation with bilateral malformation of the auricular pavilions and micropenis. The karyotype reported variants in chromosomes 15 and Y. A medical genetics specialist clinically diagnosed CHARGE syndrome. The patient received multidisciplinary management, requiring invasive mechanical ventilation, tracheostomy, thoracostomy and gastrostomy. He was discharged but readmitted due to aspiration pneumonia and died before a molecular diagnosis of the presence of a pathogenic variant for CHD7 could be made. This report constitutes a case of clinical diagnosis of CHARGE syndrome that presented structural alterations in chromosomes 15 and Y, which have not been described or associated in the literature as responsible for the etiology of this syndrome.

Abstract One of the most captivating properties of polaritons is their capacity to confine light at the nanoscale. This confinement is even more extreme in two-dimensional (2D) materials. 2D polaritons have been investigated by optical measurements using an external photodetector. However, their effective spectrally resolved electrical detection via far-field excitation remains unexplored. This hinders their exploitation in crucial applications such as sensing, hyperspectral imaging, and optical spectrometry, banking on their potential for integration with silicon technologies. Herein, we present the electrical spectroscopy of polaritonic nanoresonators based on a high-quality 2D-material heterostructure, which serves at the same time as the photodetector and the polaritonic platform. Subsequently, we electrically detect these mid-infrared resonators by near-field coupling to a graphene pn-junction. The nanoresonators simultaneously exhibit extreme lateral confinement and high-quality factors. This work opens a venue for investigating this tunable and complex hybrid system and its use in compact sensing and imaging platforms.

Conflict of interest: No Introduction and Objectives: Hepatitis B is a disease that can lead to cirrhosis, acute liver failure, hepatocellular carcinoma, or death. Paraguay is considered a country with a low incidence of hepatitis B. The discovery of two cases of hepatocellular carcinoma associated with hepatitis B, in a community of the Aché indigenous group in the Department of Canindeyú, motivated an initial investigation that aroused the suspicion of a high rate of hepatitis B in those communities. Objectives: Determine the prevalence of hepatitis B in the Aché communities of the department of Canindeyú-Paraguay in order to program therapeutic and preventive measures in said population. Patients / Materials and Methods: A joint working group was organized between the Ministry of Health and a Medical University. The population studied were the inhabitants of the “Kué Tuvy” and “Chupa Pou” communities, of the Aché ethnic group in the department of Canindeyú, Paraguay. In November 2022 and March 2023, a total of 399 natives attended the call made by community leaders and were subjected to capillary blood detection tests for HBsAg. In patients with a positive test, the following were performed: clinical history, physical examination, anthropometry, and abdominal ultrasound. Results and Discussion: In the first community of 226 people tested, 17 were positive. In the second community, 173 samples were taken and 19 were positive. Globally it represents a prevalence of 9.02% (36/399). The positive cases for HBsAg were distributed by sex: 53% men and 47% women, with an age range of 21 to 56 years with a median of 38 years. Conclusions: The prevalence of hepatitis B in Aché communities in Paraguay is much higher than in the general population, so it is necessary to carry out a microelimination and prevention plan.

Conflict of interest: No Introduction and Objectives: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic disease, characterized by inflammation with fibrosis and obliteration of the intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts. The process of chronic cholestasis eventually leads to biliary cirrhosis. It is associated with ulcerative colitis (UC) in most cases. Objectives: To describe clinical, laboratory and imaging characteristics of patients with PSC, in two reference centers for liver diseases, from 2011 to 2023. Patients / Materials and Methods: Observational, descriptive, retrospective study. Excel is used for data collection. The variables were expressed in frequency, range, mean and percentage. Results and Discussion: 16,347 records were reviewed, of which, 36 (0.22%) had the diagnosis of PSC. Four had incomplete medical records so 32 were included. Fifty nine percent were male, the mean age was 43 years, with a range of 20 to 88. The clinical presentation of 75% of the patients was jaundice. Abdominal pain or pruritus were the second and third most frequent symptoms. Pruritus, as an isolated symptom, occurred in 13%. Thirteen percent of the patients​​ were asymptomatic. The liver function test showed a cholestatic pattern in 94% of the patients. The diagnosis was confirmed by cholangio-resonance in 78%, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in 6% and a combination of both in 16%. Fifty percent of the patients had associated Inflammatory Bowel Disease (93.75% were UC). One of the 32 patients (3%) presented PSC associated to Autoimmune Hepatitis. The complications were: progression to liver cirrhosis in 53%, bacterial cholangitis in 13%, bile duct stones in 6%. Sixteen percent underwent Liver Transplantation and 28% did not present any complications. Conclusions: The first series of patients with PSC in our country is reported. The characteristics of this pathology, in this series, do not differ significantly from the characteristics published in most other countries.

Abstract Musca domestica L. is a cosmopolitan pest usually reaching high population levels, causing substantial economic losses and also acting as a vector for many diseases. The use of entomopathogenic fungi as a replacement of the chemical insecticides is a possibility already studied. In this study, we isolated three strains of Beauveria bassiana from naturally infected M. domestica individuals and tested their potentiality to act as a biological control agent. The finding of naturally occurring entomopathogenic fungal infections indicates that these fungi are well-adapted to the local environment and can survive and thrive under natural conditions, making them promising candidates for biological pest management.

Summary: Background: Surgical care holds significant importance in healthcare, especially in low and middle-income countries, as at least 50% of the 4.2 million deaths within the initial 30 days following surgery take place in these countries. The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery proposed six indicators to enhance surgical care. In Colombia, studies have been made using secondary data. However, strategies to reduce perioperative mortality have not been implemented. This study aims to describe the fourth indicator, perioperative mortality rate (POMR), with primary data in Colombia. Methods: A multicentre prospective cohort study was conducted across 54 centres (hospitals) in Colombia. Each centre selected a 7-day recruitment period between 05/2022 and 01/2023. Inclusion criteria involved patients over 18 years of age undergoing surgical procedures in operating rooms. Data quality was ensured through a verification guideline and statistical analysis using mixed-effects multilevel modelling with a case mix analysis of mortality by procedure-related, patient-related, and hospital-related conditions. Findings: 3807 patients were included with a median age of 48 (IQR 32–64), 80.3% were classified as ASA I or II, and 27% of the procedures had a low-surgical complexity. Leading procedures were Orthopedics (19.2%) and Gynaecology/Obstetrics (17.7%). According to the Clavien–Dindo scale, postoperative complications were distributed in major complications (11.7%, 10.68–12.76) and any complication (31.6%, 30.09–33.07). POMR stood at 1.9% (1.48–2.37), with elective and emergency surgery mortalities at 0.7% (0.40–1.23) and 3% (2.3–3.89) respectively. Interpretation: The POMR was higher than the ratio reported in previous national studies, even when patients had a low–risk profile and low-complexity procedures. The present research represents significant public health progress with valuable insights for national decision-makers to improve the quality of surgical care. El estudio de las armas de fuego, de sus clasificaciones, piezas, componentes, municiones, letalidad, entre otros aspectos de la balística forense desempeña un papel fundamental en la lucha contra la delincuencia, sobre todo, contra el terrorismo y la criminalidad organizada. El presente ensayo tiene como objetivo exponer los elementos teóricos y conceptuales en el proceso de investigación de los delitos en los que se verifica la presencia de un arma de fuego o se sospecha de su uso, particulares que se han ido desarrollando a través de la especialidad de la balística y que requieren ser de dominio de los profesionales que intervienen en los procesos penales. La investigación de los delitos en los que se utilizan armas de fuego en el Ecuador se ha convertido en una prioridad a partir del aumento de la violencia entre los años 2020 y 2024, a partir de lo cual se consideran los resultados teóricos alcanzados parte de la lucha contra la criminalidad. Se utilizaron en el estudio métodos de investigación como el análisis y la síntesis, la inducción, la deducción, de lo abstracto a lo concreto y de lo concreto a lo abstracto, entre otros. Finalmente se sugiere a los investigadores policiales, peritos, médicos forenses y demás miembros del “Sistema Especializado Integral de Investigación, de Medicina Legal y Ciencias Forenses” la capacitación con base a las temáticas abordadas.

Abstract Holographic quantum matter exploits the AdS/CFT correspondence to study systems in condensed matter physics. An example of these systems are strongly correlated semimetals, which feature a rich phase diagram structure. In this work, we present a holographic model for a Dirac semimetal in 2 + 1 dimensions that features a topological phase transition. Our construction relies on deforming a relativistic UV fixed point with some relevant operators that explicitly break rotations and some internal symmetries. The phase diagram for different values of the relevant coupling constants is obtained. The different phases are characterized by distinct dispersion relations for probe fermionic modes in the AdS geometry. We find semi-metallic phases characterized by the presence of Dirac cones and an insulating phase featuring a mass gap with a mild anisotropy. Remarkably, we find as well an anisotropic semi-Dirac phase characterized by a massless a fermionic excitation dispersing linearly in one direction while quadratically in the other.

Resumen: Las biografías literarias gráficas suponen una nueva herramienta para la enseñanza de la literatura. Estos cómics recogen la vida y la producción literaria de sus protagonistas, siendo propuestas muy elaboradas y con una rica intertextualidad. En esta investigación se analizan seis biografías gráficas publicadas en los últimos años sobre distintas figuras de la literatura hispanoamericana del siglo XX: Gabriel García Márquez, Juan Rulfo, Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, Pablo Neruda y Alejandra Pizarnik. Se realiza un análisis de contenido para destacar la intertextualidad, los paratextos de cada obra y sus posibilidades didácticas para la educación literaria en distintos niveles educativos, señalando además la relación entre imagen y texto y el grado de ficcionalidad de ambos. Se muestra una breve propuesta didáctica con distintas actividades para ejemplificar las posibilidades de estas lecturas. Se concluye destacando que estas biografías nos ofrecen múltiples recursos para acercarnos a la producción literaria de sus protagonistas y confirman el enorme potencial del cómic como herramienta educativa. Abstract: Graphic literary biographies are a new tool for teaching literature. These comic strips collect the life and literary production of their protagonists and constitute very elaborated proposals and with a rich intertextuality. This research analyzes six graphic biographies published in recent years on different figures of 20th century Hispanic American literature: Gabriel García Márquez, Juan Rulfo, Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, Pablo Neruda and Alejandra Pizarnik. A content analysis is carried out to highlight the intertextuality, the paratexts of each work and their didactic possibilities for literary education at different educational levels, also pointing out the relationship between image and text and the degree of fictionality of both. A brief didactic proposal is shown with different activities to exemplify the possibilities of these readings. We conclude by emphasizing that these biographies offer us multiple resources to approach the literary production of their protagonists and confirm the enormous potential of comics as an educational tool.

The Earth’s vital ocean is constantly changing and is at risk due to pollution, overfishing, and climate change (Pörtner et al. 2022). Research highlights the importance of personal attachment to the sea in fostering responsible stewardship (Chawla 2020; Pyle 2003). In urban areas, opportunities for human-nature interactions are limited, making mediated experiences, i.e., indirect interactions a crucial tool for fostering ocean stewardship. Murals, a form of street art, are prevalent in many cities around the world (Schacter and MacDowall 2023) and have been suggested as tools to promote community engagement and raise environmental literacy and awareness (see Mattern 1999; Sanchez et al. 2020; Schneller and Irizarry 2014). Based on the lessons learned from the project “From Sea to Street”, we hypothesise that murals evoke emotions, thoughts and memories, thereby shaping and strengthening people’s connection to the marine environment.

Abstract Background Maternal psychological distress during pregnancy can negatively impact fetal development, resulting in long-lasting consequences for the offspring. These effects show a sex bias. The mechanisms whereby prenatal stress induces functional and/or structural changes in the placental-fetal unit remain poorly understood. Maternal circulating small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are good candidates to act as “stress signals” in mother-to-fetus communication. Using a repetitive restraint-based rat model of prenatal stress, we examined circulating maternal sEVs under stress conditions and tested whether they could target placental-fetal tissues. Results Our mild chronic maternal stress during pregnancy paradigm induced anhedonic-like behavior in pregnant dams and led to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), particularly in male fetuses and placentas. The concentration and cargo of maternal circulating sEVs changed under stress conditions. Specifically, there was a significant reduction in neuron-enriched proteins and a significant increase in astrocyte-enriched proteins in blood-borne sEVs from stressed dams. To study the effect of repetitive restraint stress on the biodistribution of maternal circulating sEVs in the fetoplacental unit, sEVs from pregnant dams exposed to stress or control protocol were labeled with DiR fluorescent die and injected into pregnant females previously exposed to control or stress protocol. Remarkably, maternal circulating sEVs target placental/fetal tissues and, under stress conditions, fetal tissues are more receptive to sEVs. Conclusion Our results suggest that maternal circulating sEVs can act as novel mediators/modulators of mother-to-fetus stress communication. Further studies are needed to identify placental/fetal cellular targets of maternal sEVs and characterize their contribution to stress-induced sex-specific placental and fetal changes.

In traditional farming, fertilizers are often used without precision, resulting in unnecessary expenses and potential damage to the environment. This study introduces a new method for accurately identifying macronutrient deficiencies in Rhodena lettuce crops. We have developed a four-stage process. First, we gathered two sets of data for lettuce seedlings: one is composed of color images and the other of point clouds. In the second stage, we employed the interactive closest point (ICP) method to align the point clouds and extract 3D morphology features for detecting nitrogen deficiencies using machine learning techniques. Next, we trained and compared multiple detection models to identify potassium deficiencies. Finally, we compared the outcomes with traditional lab tests and expert analysis. Our results show that the decision tree classifier achieved 90.87% accuracy in detecting nitrogen deficiencies, while YOLOv9c attained an mAP of 0.79 for identifying potassium deficiencies. This innovative approach has the potential to transform how we monitor and manage crop nutrition in agriculture.

La Región de las Américas ha experimentado históricamente desigualdades sociales enraizadas en el colonialismo, las cuales se reflejan y reproducen en el ámbito de la salud. La incursión de la pandemia de COVID-19 afectó a toda la Región, pero golpeó con mayor fuerza a los grupos socialmente más desaventajados, y agravó las inequidades en salud. Bajo la premisa que las pandemias no son fenómenos socialmente neutrales, en este informe especial se analizan los impactos desiguales de la pandemia desde distintas perspectivas –histórica, epidemiológica, política, social, económica, ambiental y poblacional. Se ofrecen aquí reflexiones críticas sobre las implicaciones negativas de las desigualdades para el bienestar, no solo de las poblaciones más afectadas, sino de la sociedad en su conjunto. Se concluye con recomendaciones estratégicas para progresar hacia la equidad en salud en el escenario pospandémico. Se destaca la importancia de avanzar en la madurez de los sistemas de información para el monitoreo de la equidad en salud, la resiliencia de los sistemas de salud, y la implementación de políticas y prácticas explícitas dirigidas a eliminar las inequidades en salud. Se espera que todo lo anterior allane el camino hacia la prosperidad y el desarrollo sostenible en la Región.

Abstract This article presents the results of the geoarchaeological study of earthen building materials used in a Tartessic public building at Casas del Turuñuelo. The construction dates back to the fifth century BCE and is one of the monumental buildings of Tartessic culture, characterized by its complex architecture, prestige goods, and intentional destruction after a feast and animal sacrifice. We applied an integrated methodology combining macro and micro approaches to investigate earthen construction processes, such as techniques, labour organization, workers’ specialization, and environmental exploitation. The sample mainly consists of mudbricks, but we also include other forms of earthen materials such as mud plasters, mud mortars, and geological soils for comparison. In total, 64 samples from different building parts were studied through X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, thin-section petrography, and CHN analyses. The results reveal that the workforce involved in the construction process used different resources and presented different skill levels, but was centrally planned and organized. This study reflects on the communities’ knowledge of the environment, the logistic effort and technical skill employed in the building process, and the existence of strong political structures capable of managing the erection of the complex Tartessic buildings.

Abstract Background Antenatal steroid therapy for fetal lung maturation is routinely administered to women at risk of preterm delivery. There is strong evidence to demonstrate benefit from antenatal steroids in terms of survival and respiratory disease, notably in infants delivered at or below 32 weeks’ gestation. However, dosing remains unoptimized and lung benefits are highly variable. Current treatment regimens generate high-concentration, pulsatile fetal steroid exposures now associated with increased risk of childhood neurodevelopmental diseases. We hypothesized that damage-associated changes in the fetal hippocampal transcriptome would be independent of preterm lung function. Methods Date-mated ewes carrying a single fetus at 122 ± 2dGA (term = 150dGA) were randomized into 4 groups: (i) Saline Control Group, 4×2ml maternal saline intramuscular(IM) injections at 12hr intervals (n = 11); or (ii) Dex High Group, 2×12mg maternal IM dexamethasone phosphate injections at 12hr intervals followed by 2×2ml IM saline injections at 12hr intervals (n = 12; representing a clinical regimen used in Singapore); or (iii) Dex Low Group, 4×1.5mg maternal IM dexamethasone phosphate injections 12hr intervals (n = 12); or (iv) Beta-Acetate Group, 1×0.125mg/kg maternal IM betamethasone acetate injection followed by 3×2ml IM sterile normal saline injections 12hr intervals (n = 8). Lambs were surgically delivered 48hr after first maternal injection at 122–125dGA, ventilated for 30min to establish lung function, and euthanised for necropsy and tissue collection. Results Preterm lambs from the Dex Low and Beta-Acetate Groups had statistically and biologically significant lung function improvements (measured by gas exchange, lung compliance). Abstract Background Pathologies of the locomotor system are frequent and can cause disability and impact the quality of life of the people affected. In recent years, online training and feedback have emerged as learning tools in many fields of medicine. Objective This study aims to evaluate medical interns’ musculoskeletal examination performance after completing an online training and feedback module. Methods This study employed a quasi-experimental design. Medical interns were invited to complete a 4-week musculoskeletal physical examination training and feedback module via an e-learning platform. The course included written and audiovisual content pertaining to medical history, physical examination, and specific tests for the diagnosis of the most common knee, spine, shoulder, ankle, and foot conditions. Before and after completing the module, their ability to perform the physical examination was evaluated using an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) with simulated patients that took place face-to-face. A control group of experts was assessed using the OSCE, and their performance was compared to that of the interns before and after the training. At the end of the module feedback on the OSCE was provided to participants through the platform asynchronously and two evaluation questions about the user experience were conducted at the end of the study. Results A total of 35 subjects were assessed using the OSCE, including 29 interns and 6 experts. At the beginning of the training module, the group of interns obtained an average score of 50.6 ± 15.1. Abstract The extensive data generated on social media platforms allow us to gain insights over trending topics and public opinions. Additionally, it offers a window into user behavior, including their content engagement and news sharing habits. In this study, we analyze the relationship between users’ political ideologies and the news they share during Argentina’s 2019 election period. Our findings reveal that users predominantly share news that aligns with their political beliefs, despite accessing media outlets with diverse political leanings. Moreover, we observe a consistent pattern of users sharing articles related to topics biased to their preferred candidates, highlighting a deeper level of political alignment in online discussions. We believe that this systematic analysis framework can be applied to similar scenarios in different countries, especially those marked by significant political polarization, akin to Argentina.

Abstract Background Structural genomic variants (SVs) are prevalent in plant genomes and have played an important role in evolution and domestication, as they constitute a significant source of genomic and phenotypic variability. Nevertheless, most methods in quantitative genetics focusing on crop improvement, such as genomic prediction, consider only Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). Deep Learning (DL) is a promising strategy for genomic prediction, but its performance using SVs and SNPs as genetic markers remains unknown. Results We used rice to investigate whether combining SVs and SNPs can result in better trait prediction over SNPs alone and examine the potential advantage of Deep Learning (DL) networks over Bayesian Linear models. Specifically, the performances of BayesC (considering additive effects) and a Bayesian Reproducible Kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) regression (considering both additive and non-additive effects) were compared to those of two different DL architectures, the Multilayer Perceptron, and the Convolution Neural Network, to explore their prediction ability by using various marker input strategies. We found that exploiting structural and nucleotide variation slightly improved prediction ability on complex traits in 87% of the cases. DL models outperformed Bayesian models in 75% of the studied cases, considering the four traits and the two validation strategies used. Finally, DL systematically improved prediction ability of binary traits against the Bayesian models. Conclusions Our study reveals that the use of structural genomic variants can improve trait prediction in rice, independently of the methodology used. Also, our results suggest that Deep Learning (DL) networks can perform better than Bayesian models in the prediction of binary traits, and in quantitative traits when the training and target sets are not closely related. This highlights the potential of DL to enhance crop improvement in specific scenarios and the importance to consider SVs in addition to SNPs in genomic selection.

Abstract Background The dramatic reconfigurations of work-family roles and social boundaries resulting from the social restrictions imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic led working mums to look for online sites as spaces of emotional support and regulation where they could vent their emotions, share their concerns and griefs, and seek advice. They also became interactional spaces where mums’ relevant identities were reassessed and enacted as they aimed to balance work-family roles and improve their wellbeing. The paper explores how working mums discursively negotiated their multiple identities in an online support forum during times of global struggle, how these identity constructions reflect the domains of Work-Family Conflict (WFC) and how working mums perceived these identities are related to their mental health. Methods 127 posts of Chilean working mums published in a public online support forum for working mums collected during the first half of 2020 were analysed in three phases. The first one involved a thematic analysis to identify themes and subthemes related to working mums’ identity construction in the data. The second phase involved conducting a narrative analysis of working mums’ microstorias in order to identify a master narrative crafted by these working mums, and contesting and conforming ideologies of motherhood, among others. Finally, the third phase involved a fine-grained discourse analysis of the most representative extracts illustrating working mums’ identity negotiation. Results The sociolinguistic analysis showed that working mums’ discourses displayed three themes of self-reflection, namely, diminishing self-care, reassessing their self, and enhancing self through self-care. Identity-related sub-themes for each main theme are discussed and discursively analysed. Two main points are emphasised: (1) the identity that was most salient in working mums’ discourse was their personal identity (rather than work-family roles and identities), and (2) microstorias allowed working mums to challenge the hegemonic power of dominant discourses around their identities and their work-family roles. Conclusions The study shows that a sociolinguistic approach to the exploration of working mums’ identity negotiation is useful to highlight the ways in which mums contest binary assumptions of work-family roles and the need to reconsider working mums’ life domains so that they reflect working mums’ actual identity needs and lived experiences. Future lines of research are outlined.

Rectal cancer management has evolved significantly, particularly with neoadjuvant treatment strategies. This narrative review examines the development and effectiveness of these therapies for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC), highlighting the historical quest that led to current neoadjuvant alternatives. Initially, trials showed the benefits of adding radiotherapy (RT) and chemotherapy (CT) to surgery, reducing local recurrence (LR). The addition of oxaliplatin to chemoradiotherapy (CRT) further improved outcomes. TNT integrates chemotherapy and radiotherapy preoperatively to enhance adherence, timing, and systemic control. Key trials, including PRODIGE 23, CAO/ARO/AIO 12, OPRA, RAPIDO, and STELLAR, are analyzed to compare short-course and long-course RT with systemic chemotherapy. The heterogeneity and difficulty in comparing TNT trials due to different designs and outcomes are acknowledged, along with their promising long-term results. On the other hand, it briefly discusses the potential for non-operative management (NOM) in select patients, a strategy gaining traction due to favorable outcomes in specific trials. As a conclusion, this review underscores the complexity of rectal cancer treatment, emphasizing individualized approaches considering patient preferences and healthcare resources. It also highlights the importance of interpreting impressive positive or negative results with caution due to the variability in study designs and patient populations.

Abstract The success of chemotherapy regimens in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) could be restricted at least in part by cancer stem cells (CSC) niches within the tumor microenvironment (TME). CSC express CD133, CD44, CD47, and SOX2, among other markers and factors. Analysis of public data revealed that high expression of hyaluronan (HA), the main glycosaminoglycan of TME, correlated positively with CSC phenotype and decreased disease-free interval in NSCLC patients. Abstract We make progress in understanding the geometry associated to the Generalized Toric Polygons (GTPs) encoding the Physics of 5d Superconformal Field Theories (SCFTs), by exploiting the connection between Hanany-Witten transitions and the mathematical notion of polytope mutations. From this correspondence, it follows that the singular geometry associated to a GTP is identical to that obtained by regarding it as a standard toric diagram, but with some of its resolutions frozen in way that can be determined from the invariance of the so-called period under mutations. We propose the invariance of the period as a new criterion for distinguishing inequivalent brane webs, which allows us to resolve a puzzle posed in the literature. A second mutation invariant is the Hilbert Series of the geometry. We employ this invariant to perform quantitative checks of our ideas by computing the Hilbert Series of the BPS quivers associated to theories related by mutation. Lastly, we discuss the physical interpretation of a mathematical result ensuring the existence of a flat fibration over ℙ1 interpolating between geometries connected by mutation, which we identify with recently introduced deformations of the corresponding BPS quivers.

Abstract Olfaction is influenced by contextual factors, past experiences, and the animal’s internal state. Whether this information is integrated at the initial stages of cortical odour processing is not known, nor how these signals may influence odour encoding. Here we revealed multiple and diverse non-olfactory responses in the primary olfactory (piriform) cortex (PCx), which dynamically enhance PCx odour discrimination according to behavioural demands. We performed recordings of PCx neurons from mice trained in a virtual reality task to associate odours with visual contexts to obtain a reward. We found that learning shifts PCx activity from encoding solely odours to a regime in which positional, contextual, and associative responses emerge on odour-responsive neurons that become mixed-selective. The modulation of PCx activity by these non-olfactory signals was dynamic, improving odour decoding during task engagement and in rewarded contexts. This improvement relied on the acquired mixed-selectivity, demonstrating how integrating extra-sensory inputs in sensory cortices can enhance sensory processing while encoding the behavioural relevance of stimuli.
