22 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab., Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter-and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks, and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template data sets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community. We present the first high spectral resolution mid-infrared survey in the Orion BN/KL region, covering 7.2 to 28.3 micron. With SOFIA/EXES we target the enigmatic source Orion IRc2. While this is in the most prolifically studied massive star-forming region, longer wavelengths and molecular emission lines dominated previous spectral surveys. The mid-infrared observations in this work access different components and molecular species in unprecedented detail. We unambiguously identify two new kinematic components, both chemically rich with multiple molecular absorption lines. The "blue clump" has vLSR = -7.1 \pm 0.7 km/s and the "red clump" 1.4 \pm 0.5 km/s. While the blue and red clumps have similar temperatures and line widths, molecular species in the blue clump have higher column densities. They are both likely linked to pure rotational H2 emission also covered by this survey. This work provides evidence for the scenario that the blue and red clumps are distinct components unrelated to the classic components in the Orion BN/KL region. Comparison to spectroscopic surveys towards other infrared targets in the region show that the blue clump is clearly extended. We analyze, compare, and present in depth findings on the physical conditions of C2H2, 13CCH2, CH4, CS, H2O, HCN, H13CN, HNC, NH3, and SO2 absorption lines and an H2 emission line associated with the blue and red clumps. We present the first mid-infrared (MIR) detections of HNC and H13CN in the interstellar medium, and numerous, resolved HCN rovibrational transitions. Our observations span 12.8 to 22.9 micron towards the hot core Orion IRc2, obtained with the Echelon-Cross-Echelle Spectrograph aboard the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). Exceptional, ~5 km/s, resolution distinguishes individual rovibrational transitions of the HNC and HCN P, Q, and R branches; and the H13CN R branch. This allows direct measurement of the species' excitation temperatures, column densities, and relative abundances. HNC and H13CN exhibit a local standard rest velocity of -7 km/s that may be associated with an outflow from nearby radio source I and an excitation temperature of about 100 K. We resolve two velocity components for HCN, the primary component also being at -7 km/s with temperature 165 K. The hottest component, which had never before been observed, is at 1 km/s with temperature 309 K. This is the closest component to the hot core's centre measured to date. The derived 12C/13C=13 is below expectation for Orion's Galactocentric distance, but the derived HCN/HNC=72 is expected for this extreme environment. Compared to previous sub-mm and mm observations, our SOFIA line survey of this region shows that the resolved MIR molecular transitions are probing a distinct physical component and isolating the chemistry closest to the hot core., 20 pages, 6 figures, submitted to ApJ, comments welcome

The current paradigm of Galactic Center (GC) gas motions and star formation envisions sequential star formation in streams of gas as they pass near the supermassive black hole, Sgr A*. This is based on the relative positions of dense molecular clouds, the very young star-forming region Sgr B2, the much older region Sgr C, and the several Myr old Arches and Quintuplet Clusters. Because Sgr B1 is found with Sgr B2 in a common envelope of molecular gas and far-infrared emission, the two sources are thought to be physically related, even though there are indicators of a significantly greater age for Sgr B1. To clarify the status of Sgr B1, we have mapped it with the FIFI-LS spectrometer on SOFIA in the far-infrared lines of [O III] 52 and 88 micron. From the ratios of these lines and lines measured with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph, we find that there are at least eight separate sub-regions that must contain the stars that excite the gas. We infer spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the ionizing sources from models and find they are in agreement only with SEDs of late O stars augmented at the highest frequencies with interstellar X-rays from fast shocks. We suggest that although the gas, from its velocity structure, must be part of the very young Sgr B2 complex, the stars that are ionizing the gas were not formed there but are the remnants of a previous generation of star formation in the GC., 9 pages, 3 figures. We present high-spectral resolution observations from 12.96 - 13.33 microns towards Orion IRc2 using the mid-infrared spectrograph, EXES, on SOFIA. These observations probe the physical and chemical conditions of the Orion hot core, which is sampled by a bright, compact, mid-infrared background continuum source in the region, IRc2. All ten of the rovibrational C2H2 transitions expected in our spectral coverage, are detected with high S/N, yielding continuous coverage of the R-branch lines from J=9-8 to J=18-17, including both ortho and para species. Eight of these rovibrational transitions are newly reported detections. The isotopologue, 13CCH2, is clearly detected with high signal-to-noise. This enabled a direct measurement of the 12C/13C isotopic ratio for the Orion hot core of 14 +/- 1 and an estimated maximum value of 21. We also detected several HCN rovibrational lines. The ortho and para C2H2 ladders are clearly separate and tracing two different temperatures, 226 K and 164 K, respectively, with a non-equilibrium ortho to para ratio (OPR) of 1.7 +\- 0.1. Additionally, the ortho and para V_LSR values differ by about 1.8 +/- 0.2 km/s, while, the mean line widths differ by 0.7 +/- 0.2 km/s, suggesting that these species are not uniformly mixed along the line of sight to IRc2. We propose that the abnormally low C2H2 OPR could be a remnant from an earlier, colder phase, before the density enhancement (now the hot core) was impacted by shocks generated from an explosive event 500 yrs ago., accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Using the short-high module of the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have measured the [S IV] 10.51, [Ne II] 12.81, [Ne III] 15.56, and [S III] 18.71-micron emission lines in nine H II regions in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. These lines arise from the dominant ionization states of the elements neon (Ne$^{++}$, Ne$^+$) and sulphur (S$^{3+}$, S$^{++}$), thereby allowing an analysis of the neon to sulphur abundance ratio as well as the ionic abundance ratios Ne$^+$/Ne$^{++}$ and S$^{3+}$/S$^{++}$. By extending our studies of H II regions in M83 and M33 to the lower metallicity NGC 6822, we increase the reliability of the estimated Ne/S ratio. We find that the Ne/S ratio appears to be fairly universal, with not much variation about the ratio found for NGC 6822: the median (average) Ne/S ratio equals 11.6 (12.2$\pm$0.8). This value is in contrast to Asplund et al.'s currently best estimated value for the Sun: Ne/S = 6.5. In addition, we continue to test the predicted ionizing spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from various stellar atmosphere models by comparing model nebulae computed with these SEDs as inputs to our observational data, changing just the stellar atmosphere model abundances. Here we employ a new grid of SEDs computed with different metallicities: Solar, 0.4 Solar, and 0.1 Solar. As expected, these changes to the SED show similar trends to those seen upon changing just the nebular gas metallicities in our plasma simulations: lower metallicity results in higher ionization. We report spectrophotometric observations made with SOFIA/FORCAST on 2011 June 2 UT. Optical measurements have previously shown that the abundance discrepancy factor (adf) varies with position in several high-adf PNe, and is highest close to the central star. The very low electron temperature inclusions postulated to explain the abundance discrepancy, must be cooled predominantly by fine structure IR lines. These SOFIA data will map mid-IR FS lines (and our related Herschel program will add several far-IR FS lines) in the bright, well-characterized, high-adf PN NGC 7009. We will compare these IR results with FS optical line measurements in order to correlate ratios of IR to optical fluxes with position, and thus correlate with where the adf peaks.

We present Spitzer Space Telescope observations of 11 regions SE of the Bright Bar in the Orion Nebula, along a radial from the exciting star theta1OriC, extending from 2.6 to 12.1'. Our Cycle 5 programme obtained deep spectra with matching IRS short-high (SH) and long-high (LH) aperture grid patterns. Most previous IR missions observed only the inner few arcmin. Orion is the benchmark for studies of the ISM particularly for elemental abundances. Spitzer observations provide a unique perspective on the Ne and S abundances by virtue of observing the dominant ionization states of Ne (Ne+, Ne++) and S (S++, S3+) in Orion and H II regions in general. The Ne/H abundance ratio is especially well determined, with a value of (1.01+/-0.08)E-4. We obtained corresponding new ground-based spectra at CTIO. These optical data are used to estimate the electron temperature, electron density, optical extinction, and the S+/S++ ratio at each of our Spitzer positions. That permits an adjustment for the total gas-phase S abundance because no S+ line is observed by Spitzer. The gas-phase S/H abundance ratio is (7.68+/-0.30)E-6. The Ne/S abundance ratio may be determined even when the weaker hydrogen line, H(7-6) here, is not measured. The mean value, adjusted for the optical S+/S++ ratio, is Ne/S = 13.0+/-0.6. We derive the electron density versus distance from theta1OriC for [S III] and [S II]. Both distributions are for the most part decreasing with increasing distance. A dramatic find is the presence of high-ionization Ne++ all the way to the outer optical boundary ~12' from theta1OriC. This IR result is robust, whereas the optical evidence from observations of high-ionization species (e.g. O++) at the outer optical boundary suffers uncertainty because of scattering of emission from the much brighter inner Huygens Region.

Massive young stellar objects (YSOs), like low-mass YSOs, appear to be surrounded by optically thick envelopes and/or disks and have regions, often bipolar, that are seen in polarized scattered light at near-infrared wavelengths. We are using the 0.2'' spatial resolution of NICMOS on Hubble Space Telescope to examine the structure of the disks and outflow regions of massive YSOs in star-forming regions within a few kpc of the Sun. Here we report on 2 micron polarimetry of NGC 6334 V and S255 IRS1. NGC 6334 V consists of a double-lobed bright reflection nebula seen against a dark region, probably an optically thick molecular cloud. Our polarization measurements show that the illuminating star lies ~ 2'' south of the line connecting the two lobes; we do not detect this star at 2 micron, but there are a small radio source and a mid-infrared source at this location. S255 IRS1 consists of two YSOs (NIRS1 and NIRS3) with overlapping scattered light lobes and luminosities corresponding to early B stars. Included in IRS1 is a cluster of stars from whose polarization we determine the local magnetic field direction. Neither YSO has its scattered light lobes aligned with this magnetic field. The line connecting the scattered light lobes of NIRS1 is twisted symmetrically around the star; the best explanation is that the star is part of a close binary and the outflow axis of NIRS1 is precessing as a result of non-coplanar disk and orbit. The star NIRS3 is also offset from the line connecting its two scattered light lobes. We suggest that all three YSOs show evidence of episodic ejection of material as they accrete from dense, optically thick envelopes.

We have observed emission lines of [S iv] 10.51, H(7–6) 12.37, [Ne ii] 12.81, [Ne iii] 15.56 and [S iii] 18.71 μm in a number of extragalactic H ii regions with the Spitzer Space Telescope. A previous paper presented our data and analysis for the substantially face-on spiral galaxy M83. Here we report our results for the Local Group spiral galaxy M33. The nebulae selected cover a wide range of galactocentric radii (RG). The observations were made with the Infrared Spectrograph with the short wavelength, high-resolution module. The above set of five lines is observed cospatially, thus permitting a reliable comparison of the fluxes. From the measured fluxes, we determine the ionic abundance ratios including Ne++/Ne+, S3+/S++, and S++/Ne+ and find that there is a correlation of increasingly higher ionization with larger RG. By sampling the dominant ionization states of Ne (Ne+, Ne++) and S (S++, S3+) for H ii regions, we can estimate the Ne/H, S/H and Ne/S ratios. We find from linear least-squares fits that there is a decrease in metallicity with increasing RG: d log (Ne/H)/dRG=−0.058 ± 0.014 and d log (S/H)/dRG=−0.052 ± 0.021 dex kpc−1. There is no apparent variation in the Ne/S ratio with RG. Unlike our previous similar study of M83, where we conjectured that this ratio was an upper limit, for M33 the derived ratios are likely a robust indication of Ne/S. This occurs because the H ii regions have lower metallicity and higher ionization than those in M83. Both Ne and S are primary elements produced in α-chain reactions, following C and O burning in stars, making their yields depend very little on the stellar metallicity. Thus, it is expected that the Ne/S ratio remains relatively constant throughout a galaxy. The median (average) Ne/S ratio derived for H ii regions in M33 is 16.3 (16.9), just slightly higher than the Orion Nebula value of 14.3. The same methodology is applied to Spitzer observations recently published for three massive H ii regions: NGC 3603 (Milky Way), 30 Dor (LMC) and N 66 (SMC) as well as for a group of blue compact dwarf galaxies. We find median Ne/S values of 14.6, 11.4, 10.1, and 14.0, respectively. All of these values are in sharp contrast with the much lower ‘canonical’, but controversial, solar value of ∼5. A recent nucleosynthesis, galactic chemical evolution model predicts an Ne/S abundance of ∼9. Our observations may also be used to test the predicted ionizing spectral energy distribution of various stellar atmosphere models. We compare the ratio of fractional ionizations 〈Ne++〉/〈S++〉, 〈Ne++〉/〈S3+〉, and 〈Ne++〉/〈Ne+〉 versus 〈S3+〉/〈S++〉 with predictions made from our photoionization models using several of the state-of-the-art stellar atmosphere model grids. The trends of the ionic ratios established from the prior M83 study are remarkably similar, but continued to higher ionization with the present M33 objects.

We present Spitzer IRS spectra (R ~600, 10 - 38 micron) of 38 positions in the Galactic Center (GC), all at the same Galactic longitude and spanning plus/minus 0.3 degrees in latitude. Our positions include the Arches Cluster, the Arched Filaments, regions near the Quintuplet Cluster, the ``Bubble'' lying along the same line-of-sight as the molecular cloud G0.11-0.11, and the diffuse interstellar gas along the line-of-sight at higher Galactic latitudes. From measurements of the [O IV], [Ne II], [Ne III], [Si II], [S III], [S IV], [Fe II], [Fe III], and H_2 S(0), S(1), and S(2) lines we determine the gas excitation and ionic abundance ratios. The Ne/H and S/H abundance ratios are ~ 1.6 times that of the Orion Nebula. The main source of excitation is photoionization, with the Arches Cluster ionizing the Arched Filaments and the Quintuplet Cluster ionizing the gas nearby and at lower Galactic latitudes including the far side of the Bubble. In addition, strong shocks ionize gas to O^{+3} and destroy dust grains, releasing iron into the gas phase (Fe/H ~ 1.3 times 10^{-6} in the Arched Filaments and Fe/H ~ 8.8 times 10^{-6} in the Bubble). The shock effects are particularly noticeable in the center of the Bubble, but O$^{+3}$ is present in all positions. We suggest that the shocks are due to the winds from the Quintuplet Cluster Wolf-Rayet stars. On the other hand, the H_2 line ratios can be explained with multi-component models of warm molecular gas in photodissociation regions without the need for H_2 production in shocks., 51 pages, 17 figures To be published in the Astrophysical Journal

We present Spitzer IRS R ~ 600 spectra (10 - 38 μm) of 38 positions in the Galactic Center (GC), all at the same Galactic longitude of and including the Arches Cluster. The H2 lines are formed both in photodissociation regions in the GC and along the line of sight to the GC.

We present Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) measurements of the far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure lines [S IV] (10.5 μm), [S III] (33.5 μm), [O III] (51.8 and 88.4 μm), [N III] (57.3 μm), [N II] (121.9 μm), [O I] (63.2 and 145.5 μm), and [C II] (157.7 μm) at five positions on the thermal ``Arched'' Filaments in the Galactic center region in order to investigate the influence of the massive, young Arches cluster on the interstellar medium. Serendipitous measurements of OH (119.3 μm) are also presented. Radio recombination line and ISO spectroscopic measurements provide strong evidence that the Arches cluster is responsible for the excitation of the Arched Filaments. The observations reported here were selected to provide measurements close to the Arches cluster and at uniformly increasing projected distances over the range 0-9 pc. Within the measurement uncertainties, the diagnostic line ratios most sensitive to excitation and least sensitive to density fluctuations, [O III]/[S III] and [S IV]/[S III], appear to decrease with projected distance from the Arches cluster. In agreement with other studies, this provides additional evidence that the cluster is the primary ionization source for the Arched Filaments. The total FIR luminosity also generally falls with projected distance from the Arches cluster. The best predictions from photoionization models for the rapid decrease in the measured line flux ratios with projected distance from the Arches cluster, however, are only accurate to a factor of 1.5, including allowance for additional offset along the line of sight. The measurements of lines formed predominantly in photodissociation regions are not well matched by current models. High-resolution spectra indicate gas moving at -70 km s-1 only at the location of the Arches cluster, significantly different from the predominant -30 km s-1 gas seen in the underlying molecular cloud.

We have observed the polarized light at 2 μm in the center of NGC 1068 with NICMOS Camera 2 on the Hubble Space Telescope. The nucleus is dominated by a bright, unresolved source, polarized at a level of 6.0% ± 1.2% with a position angle of 122° ± 15°. There are two polarized lobes extending up to 8'' northeast and southwest of the nucleus. The polarized flux in both lobes is quite clumpy, with the maximum polarization occurring in the southwest lobe at a level of 17% when smoothed to 023 resolution. The perpendiculars to the polarization vectors in these two lobes point back to the intense unresolved nuclear source to within one 0076 Camera 2 pixel, thereby confirming that this is the illuminating source of the scattered light and therefore the probable active galactic nucleus central engine. Whereas the polarization of the nucleus is probably caused by dichroic absorption, the polarization in the lobes is almost certainly caused by scattering, with very little contribution from dichroic absorption. Features in the polarized lobes include a gap at a distance of about 1'' from the nucleus toward the southwest lobe and a "knot" of emission about 5'' northeast of the nucleus. Both features had been discussed by ground-based observers, but they are much better defined with the high spatial resolution of NICMOS. The northeast knot may be the side of a molecular cloud that is facing the nucleus, which may be preventing the expansion of the northeast radio lobe at the head of the radio synchrotron-radiation-emitting jet. We also report the presence of two ghosts in the Camera 2 polarizers. These had not been detected previously (Hines et al.) because they are relatively faint and require observations of a source with a large dynamic range.

We present J (1.2 microns) H (1-6 microns) K' (2.11 microns) and Br(gamma) (2.166 microns) images from four large regions within the central 40 pc of the Galaxy. Localized variations in the extinction, as determined by observations of the stellar population, are examined using the median H-K' color as a function of position within each region. As the value of the derived extinction from the stars is dependent upon the intrinsic magnitude of the assumed stellar type, the J-H vs. H-K' diagrams are first used to investigate the distribution of stellar types in the four regions. We find that there is a distinct OB population, contrary to earlier assumptions, with the ratio of K and M giants and supergiants to OB stars approximately twice that of the solar neighborhood. Although the on the scale of approx. 1 min. fluctuations in the extinction are on the order of A(sub V) approx. greater than 2, throughout the entire region the extinction varies from A(sub V) approx. greater than 25 to A(sub V) approx. less than 40. We also examine whether there is any variation in the extinction and stellar number density relative to the unusual radio features in these regions and do not find a significant correlation. Spectral imaging in Br(gamma) 2.166 microns emission shows a strong morphological correspondence between the 6 cm radio images and the diffuse Br(gamma) emission. By comparing the theoretical Br(gamma) flux derived from the radio flux using recombination theory, with our measured Br(gamma) flux, we obtain a second, independent, estimate of the extinction. We compare the two data sets and find that the extinction as derived from the stars is consistently greater, sometimes by a factor of two, than the value of the extinction derived from the Br(gamma) images. The derived extinction in various regions, however, is insufficient for any of these regions to be located behind the molecular clouds as previously observed in the Galactic Center, consistent with the theory that the observed radio emission is produced on the foreground surface of these clouds.

We present images of a 90in. x 90in. field centered on BN in OMC-1, taken with the Near-Infrared Camera and MultiObject Spectrograph (NICMOS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The observed lines are H2 1-0 S(l), Pa, [FeII] 1.64 pm, and the adjacent continua. The region is rich in interesting structures. The most remarkable are the streamers or "fingers" of H2 emission which extend from 15in. to 50in. from IRc2, seen here in unprecedented detail. Unlike the northern H2 fingers, the inner fingers do not exhibit significant [FeII] emission at theirdips, which we suggest is due to lower excitation. These observations also show that the general morphology of the Pa and [FeII] emission (both imaged for the first time in this region) bears a striking resemblance to that of the Ha and [SII] emission previously observed with WFPC2. This implies that these IR and optical lines are produced by radiative excitation on the surface of the molecular cloud. The Pa morphology of HH 202 is also very similar to its H a and [OIII] emission, again suggesting that the Pa in this object is photo-excited by the Trapezium, as has been suggested for the optical emission. We find evidence of shock-excited [FeII] in HH 208, where it again closely follows the morphology of [SII]. There is also H2 coincident with the [SII] and [FeII] emission, which may be associated with HH 208. Finally, we note some interesting continuum features: diffuse "tails" trailing from IRc3 and IRc4, more extensive observations of the "crescent" found by Stolovy, et al. (1998), and new observations of a similar oval object nearby. We also find a "V"-shaped region which may be the boundary of a cavity being cleared by IRc2.

Using near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, we discuss the discovery of six emission-line sources within approx. 20 pc of Sgr A West but outside of the central parsec. The objects are coincident with stars seen in. the J, H, and K' images; all have Br(gamma) (2.166 microns) in emission, several also have He I (2.058 and 2.112/3 micrometers), and some have He II (2.189 micrometers) emission lines. Comparison of the H- and K-band spectra of the newly discovered stars with recently published infrared spectral atlases of optically classified stars suggests that most of these stars are similar to massive stars in transition (e.g., Ofpe/WN9, B[e], and LBV), although one is definitely a WN6 star. Two of the potential stars are associated with the radio emission regions A-D near Sgr A East, three are near or within the radio emission regions Hl-H8, the last is near GO.10+0.02 and is likely to be associated with the GO.12+0.02 (Arches) cluster of stars, discussed in a previous paper. The stars are shown to be significant sources of ionization for their associated radio emission regions, with several capable of completely ionizing the regions. These results provide additional support for the idea that these thermal radio regions, and similar such regions in the Galactic center, are indeed photoionized by hot young stars.

Using the Short Wavelength Spectrometer on the Infrared Space Observatory, we measured in the Orion Nebula several components of the He I Brα transition, the first detections to the best of our knowledge in an H II region, and the H I Brα line. A value of He+/H+=0.085±0.003 is inferred from these data and is typical of previous values found for Orion. The IR method to obtain He+/H+ is very insensitive to extinction. The measurement of the weak He I 2.855 μm (5p 3Po→4s 3S) flux permits an assessment of Te in the He+ region. Its flux relative to the flux of He I 4.0490 μm (5g 3G→4f 3Fo, 5g 1G→4f 1Fo blend) is roughly ∝Te (for Te range applicable to most H II regions and planetary nebulae) and depends little on Ne. From our measured ratio, using Ne = 104 cm-3, Te is slightly less than 104 K. We stress that many IR measurements of a hydrogen line are likely to also include one or more significant helium line contributions. Attributing all of the flux to the stronger H I line will result in underestimates for abundance ratios relative to H+. This has usually not been taken into account in the past when deriving abundances of other ions/elements relative to H. Errors in the velocity and line width inferred may also occur by failure to consider the blended He component. Because the strongest He I lines will generally be on the blue side of their counterpart H I line, interpreting a blended feature as only H I will cause a spurious bias to lower velocities.

The core of OMC-1 has been imaged with the Near-Infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrometer (NICMOS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope at 02 resolution in 1% filters at 2.12 and 2.15 μm, revealing intricate structures in both continuum and shocked molecular hydrogen line emission. Numerous H2-emitting clumps surrounding the BN/KL region have been resolved for the first time, several of which exhibit prototypical bow-shock morphologies with V-shaped tips. We interpret these to be lower excitation analogs of similar structures ~2' northwest of the core observed with ground-based telescopes. Many of the elongated H2 structures and bow-shock features appear to radiate outward from a region within a few arcseconds of radio source I, which suggests that the H2 energetics are dominated by one or more outflow sources in this region. However, the orientations of some features are unrelated to this apparent outflow pattern. The deeply embedded, suspected outflow source I remains undetected at 2 μm, although two faint new continuum sources have been detected within ~1'' of it. The newly resolved H2 features with bow-shock morphologies are located in regions previously identified as bow shocks by highly blueshifted components in their line profiles. In contrast, regions of H2 emission that are diffuse in the NICMOS image have broad, smooth line profiles. Several continuum features have an arclike appearance, which suggests interactions of winds with the ambient medium. At least 40 stellar or protostellar continuum sources have been detected, including at least one proplyd and four pairs of binary stars.

HST NICMOS narrowband images of the shocked molecular hydrogen emission in OMC-1 are analyzed to reveal new information on the BN/KL outflow. The outstanding morphological feature of this region is the array of molecular hydrogen ``fingers'' emanating from the general vicinity of IRc2 and the presence of several Herbig-Haro objects. The NICMOS images appear to resolve individual shock fronts. This work is a more quantitative and detailed analysis of our data from a previous paper (Schultz etal. 1999). Line strengths for the H_2 1--0 S(4) plus 2--1 S(6) lines at 1.89 micron are estimated from measurements with the Paschen_alpha continuum filter F190N at 1.90 micron, and continuum measurements at 1.66 and 2.15 micron. We compare the observed H_2 line strengths and ratios of the 1.89 micron and 2.12 micron 1--0 S(1) lines with models for molecular cloud shock waves. Most of the data cannot be fit by J-shocks, but are well matched by C-shocks with shock velocities in the range of 20--45 km/s and preshock densities of 10^{4} - 10^{6} cm^{-3}, similiar to values obtained in larger beam studies which averaged over many shocks. There is also some evidence that shocks with higher densities have lower velocities., 33 pages, 11 figures, 2 of those color

Far-infrared hydrogen recombination lines H15(alpha)(169.4 micrometers), H12(alpha)(88.8 micrometers), and H10(alpha)(52.5 micrometers) were detected in the peculiar luminous star MWC 349A from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. Here it is shown that at least H15(alpha) is strongly amplified, with the probable amplification factor being greater than or about equal to 10(exp 3) and a brightness temperature that is greater than or about equal to 10(exp 7) kelvin. The other two lines also show signs of amplification, although to a lesser degree. Beyond H10(alpha) the amplification apparently vanishes. The newly detected amplified lines fall into the laser wavelength domain. These lasers, as well as the previously detected hydrogen masers may originate in the photoionized circumstellar disk of MWC 349A and constrain the disk's physics and structure.

Although variations in elemental abundance ratios in the Milky Way Galaxy certainly exist, details remain uncertain, particularly in the inner Galaxy, where stars and H II regions in the Galactic plane are obscured optically. In this paper we revisit two previously studied, inner Galaxy H II regions: G333.6-0.2 and W43. We observed three new positions in G333.6-0.2 with the Kuiper Airborne Observatory and reobserved the central position with the Infrared Space Observatory's Long Wavelength Spectrometer in far-infrared lines of S++, N++, N+, and O++. We also added the N+ lines at 122 and 205 micron to the suite of lines measured in W43 by Simpson et al. (1995). The measured electron densities range from ~40 to over 4000 cm-3 in a single H II region, indicating that abundance analyses must consider density variations, since the critical densities of the observed lines range from 40 to 9000 cm-3. We propose a method to handle density variations and make new estimates of the S/H and N/H abundance ratios. We find that our sulfur abundance estimates for G333.6-0.2 and W43 agree with the S/H abundance ratios expected for the S/H abundance gradient previously reported by Simpson et al. The estimated N/H, S/H, and N/S ratios are the most reliable because of their small corrections for unseen ionization states (< 10%). We compute models of the two H II regions to estimate corrections for the other unseen ionization states. We discuss these predictions and conclude that only a few of the latest models adequately reproduce H II region observations, including the well-known, relatively-large observed Ne++/O++ ratios in low- and moderate-excitation H II regions., 29 pages, 6 figures, ApJ in press

We observed several H ii regions in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 using the infrared spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Our aim is twofold: first, to examine the neon to sulfur abundance ratio in order to determine how much it may vary and whether or not, it is fairly ‘universal’; second, to discriminate and test the predicted ionizing spectral energy distribution between various stellar atmosphere models by comparing with our derivation of the ratio of fractional ionizations involving neon and sulfur. This work extends our previous similar studies of H ii regions in M83 and M33 to lower metallicities.

NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for IR Astronomy (SOFIA) will enable unprecedented IR acuity at wavelengths obscured from the ground. To help open this new chapter in the exploration of the IR universe, we are developing the Airborne IR Echelle Spectrometer (AIRES) as a facility science instrument. Full funding was awarded for a four year development in October, 1997. The instrument is scheduled to come on-line with the observatory in the Fall of 2001. It will be used to investigate a broad range of phenomena that occur in the interstellar medium. AIRES will use a 1200 mm long, 76 degree blaze angle echelle to combine high resolution spectroscopy with diffraction-limited imaging in the cross-dispersion direction. Its three 2D detector arrays will prove good sensitivity over a decade in wavelength. An additional array will be used as a slit viewer for (lambda)

We have found hot stars within the cenral 40 parsecs of the Galactic Center. They may at least partially ionize the thermal radio emission regions. A cluster of such stars in the vicinity of the Arched Filaments and individual stars scattered about the region are discussed. From comparisons with spectra of optically classified stars, the new stars appear to be B[e] and WN7-9 stars.

In order to study the physical properties of nebulae and determine their elemental abundances, it is important to observe lines from many different ionic species. Such studies have been enhanced in recent years with the measurement of lines in the far-infrared (FIR). The [N iii]57μm line provides a way to assess the N++ abundance — which is not readily done from any other spectral region. Recent detection of the [Nii]122 and 205μm lines provides a new way to assess both the electron density in the N+ region and the total N abundance in an object. When there are few observations to warrant a detailed modeling approach, it may be necessary to use another approach which has been referred to as a semi-empirical method (hereafter SEM) (e.g. Aller 1984). We delineate a SEM scheme for doing this and apply it to observations for the H ii region G333.6–0.2.

We assess the gas-phase abundances of Si, C, and Fe from our recent measurements of Si++, C++, and Fe++ in the Orion Nebula by expanding on our earlier “blister” models. The Fe++ 22.9 μm line measured with the KAO yields Fe/H ∼ 3x 10-6 - considerably larger than in the diffuse ISM, where relative to solar, Fe/H is down by ∼ 100. However, in Orion, Fe/H is stilliower than solar by a factor ∼ 10. The C and Si abundances are derived from new IUE high dispersion spectra of the C++ 1907, 1909 A and Si++ 1883, 1892 A lines. Gas-phase Si/C = 0.016 in the Orion ionized volume and is particularly insensitive to uncertainties in extinction and temperature structure. The solar value is 0.098. Gas-phase C/H = 3x10-4 and Si/H = 4.8x10-6 . Compared to solar, Si is depleted by 0.135 in the ionized region, while C is essentially undepleted. This suggests that most Si and Fe resides in dust grains even in the ionized volume.

Far-infrared lines of (N III) (57 microns), (O III) (52, 88 microns), (Ne III) (36 microns), and (S III) (19, 33 microns) have been measured in the H II regions G1.13 - 0.11, W31B, G23.95 + 0.15, G25.38 - 0.18, G29.96 - 0.02, W43, W51e, S156, S158, NGC 3576, NGC 3603, and G298.22-0.34. These observations were made with the facility Cryogenic Grating Spectrometer on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory to examine variations in abundances throughout the Galaxy. Previously published observations of G0.095 + 0.012, G333.60 - 0.21, G45.13 + 0.14A, K3-50, and M17 are also discussed. The giant H II region 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) was observed for comparison. Fluxes for (Ne II) (12.8 microns), (S IV) (10.5 microns), and the radio free-free continuum were collected from the literature for those sources. Electron densities were estimated from FIR line-pair ratios, and ionic abundances were estimated from the FIR line and radio fluxes. The excitation was estimated from the O(2+)/S(2+) ratio. Corrections for unseen ionization stages were calculated with the use of constnat-density H II region models. The validity and range of applicability of such semiempirical ionization correction schemes are discussed. The abundances with respect to hydrogen exhibit gradients with R(sub G) comparable to those previously measured for our Galaxy and for other galaxies. The overall gradients are d (log N/H)/dR = -0.10 +/- 0.02 dex/kpc, d(log Ne/H)/dR = -0.08 +/- 0.02 dex/kpc and d(log S/H)/dR = 0.07 +/- 0.02 dex/kpc. Compared to the Orion Nebula, the intermediate R(sub G) H II regions with 6 is less than R(sub G) is less than 11 kpc have similar or lower S/H and N/O ratios. The N/O ratios in the inner Galaxy are more than twice those observed in the Orion Nebula and intermediate R(sub G) H II regions. In fact, all the abundance ratios are as well or better fitted by a step fit with two levels than by a linear gradient. As has been noted in previous studies, the N/O ratio estimated from infrared observations of the doubly ionized N and O lines in H II regions is larger than the ratio estimated from optical observations of the singly ionized N and O lines. The Ne(2+)/O(2+) ratio is observed to be essentially constant over a wide range of excitation. This contradicts predictions of model H II regions calculated with the use of Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) model stellar atmospheres. We conclude that these stellar atmospheres significantly underestimate the actual emergent fluxes for energies greater than 41 eV.

We have measured day 640-645 line and continuum spectra of (Ni II) 6.6 micrometer (Ne II) 12.8 micrometer (line emission was not detected), and (Fe II) 17.9 and 26.0 micrometer from SN 1987A. The high velocity feature at v(sub HVF) approximately 3900 km/sec found in both of our day 410 (Fe II) spectra is again detected in the day 640 (Ni II) spectrum, although the signal-to-noise of the day 640 (Fe II) spectra is insufficient to show this feature. The continuum fluxes provide clear evidence for the formation of dust between day 410 and day 640 and are best fitted by a graybody spectrum with a temperature of 342 +/- 17 K at day 640 and a surface area corresponding to a minimum dust velocity v(sub dust) = 1910 +/- 170 km/sec. Optically thin dust emissivity laws proportional to lambda(exp -1) or lambda(exp -2) are inconsistent with the data. Either the dust grains are large (radius a much greater than 4 micrometer and radiate like individual blackbodies, or else they are located in clumps optically thick in the 6-26 micrometer range. The (Ni II) 6.6 micrometer line flux yields a minimum Ni(+) mass of 5.8 +/- 1.6 x 10(exp -4) solar mass and a Ni/Fe abundance ratio of 0.06 +/- 0.02, equal to the solar value. The ratio of the two (Fe II) line profiles implies a gas temperature 2600 +/- 700 K, a drop of 1800 +/- 800 K from our day 410 measurement. The (Fe II) 26.0 micrometer line flux has decreased by a factor of 2 and the day 640 (Ni II) profile is blueshifted by -440 +/- 270 km/sec, relative to observations before day 500. We show that the decrease in the (Fe II) flux and the blueshift are not produced by a decrease in electron scattering optical depth, electron density, or temperature, but rather are probably due to obscuration by the same dust which produces the infrared continuum. This supports the interpretation that the dust spectrum is produced by optically thick clumps. We discuss possible explanations for the discrepancy between the mass of Fe(+) detected and the total iron mass required to power the light curve. The decrease in the (Fe II) fluxes relative to the decrease required to account for the blueshifts of optical lines from non-iron-group elements and the similarity between v(sub dust) and the Ni(+) expansion velocity imply a spatial association between the dust clumps and the iron-group elements. In addition, the larger blueshift observed for the near and far-infrared, heavy metal transitions relative to non-iron-group lines suggests that the iron-group elements are somewhat segregated from lighter elements such as the Mg(sup 0) and O(sup 0) responsible for shorter wavelength lines. We speculate that FeS may be an important constituent of the dust. A comparison of our line profiles with radiative transfer models shows that while power law and exponential density distributions yield reasonable fits to the data, polytrope distributions provided significantly worse agreement. The best fits require a substantial fraction of the iron to be undetectable, and are consistent with maximum expansion velocities of v(sub max) approximately 3000 km/sec.

Detection of the 205 micrometer fine structure line of N II in the nearby starburst galaxy M82 is reported. The intensity wihin a 54 sec Full width at Half Maximum (FWHM) beam is (7.1 +/- 1.2) x 10(exp -19) W cm(exp -2). The ratio of the intensity of the recently detected 122 micrometer line to that of the 2.5 micrometer lines is = (4.2) (sup =1.6) (sub -1.2), significantly larger than the corresponding Galactic value of 1.6 +/- 0.3, reflecting higher electron densities within the central 850 pc of M82 in comparison to the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) Galactic average. The 2.5 micrometer line profile is consistent with other far-infrared fine-structure line profiles observed in M82. The observations are interpreted in the context of a two-component model of the ionized medium in M82. We find that a component of density as low as approximately 50 cm(exp -3) can comprise up to 70% of the total mass of warm ionized gas within the beam. The balance of the ionized mass is comprised of a component of density approximately greater than 100 cm(exp -3). A model is explored in which the dneser ionized medium constitute the boundaries of neutral surfaces which border the expanding hot plasma from the nuclear region.

We describe a semiempirical methodology-based on measurements of far-infrared (FIR) lines-that yields information on electron densities in regions where various ionic species exist, effective temperatures (T(sub eff)) for stars ionizing H II regions, and gas-phase heavy element abundances. Although this capability has long been available via optical data, the special features of FIR lines-relative insensitivity to extinction and electron temperature variations-extend the analysis ability. Several line ratios serve as diagnostics of electron density, N(sub e), probing different ionization conditions and different density regimes. The more N(sub e)-diagnostic observations made, the more reliable will be the deciphering of the actual variation in density throughout a nebula. A method to estimate T(sub eff) from the FIR (N III)/(N II) line ratio requires that the nebula be ionization bounded and that substantially all of the flux from the revevant lines be observed. However, to estimate T(sub eff) by a second method that uses the ratio of FIR (S III)/(O III) lines, an ionization-bounded nebula is a sufficient, but not necessary, condition. These restrictions are unnecessary for estimating densities and heavy element abundances. We show that a fairly general determination of metallicity, via the S/H ratio, may be made for H II regions with observations of just two lines-(S III) 19 micron and a hydrogen recombination line (or appropriate substitute). These techniques are applied to recent FIR data for the G333.6-0.2 H II region, including application to the recently measured (N II) 122 and 205 micron lines.

Measurements of the G333.6-0.2 H II region which include the first detection of the N II 122 micron forbidden line in an astronomical force and the first measurement of the N II 205 micron forbidden line in a discrete source are presented. Also considered are fine structure lines of forbidden S III, forbidden Fe III, forbidden Si II, forbidden Ne III, forbidden O III, forbidden N III, forbidden O I, and forbidden C II from 19 to 206 microns. It is concluded that the N II 122 and 205 microns forbidden line pair in a discrete astronomical source was detected for the first time. The emission in transitions is produced largely by low-ioninzation, low-density material not easily probed by other lines. Other FIR line pairs generally originate in higher density regions closer to the exciting force.

Measurements of far-infrared lines and continuum from GO.095 + 0.012 and the E2 thermal 'arched' radio filament near the Galactic center are well explained by numerous embedded stars with T(sub eff) approximately 35,000 K. The structure of the filament and the apparent absence of hotter stars are qualitatively difficult to reconcile with this idea.

Properties of two compact H II regions, K3-50 A and G45.13 + 0.14 A, were investigated by measuring FIR fluxes from forbidden O III 51.8 and 88.4 micron lines, forbidden N III 57.3 micron line, forbidden S III 33.5 micron line, and forbidden Ne III 36.0 micron line of these regions, using a cooled grating spectrometer on NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory. For both H II regions, the ratio of the two FIR O(2+) lines indicates an electron density of about 1000/cu cm, which for K3-50 A is a factor of 10 to 100 lower than the density determined from optical line observations of the lower excitation species S(+) and N(+) and than the peak rms density deduced from radio continuum measurements by Turner and Matthews (1984). Detailed spherically symmetric models of the two sources were constructed using all available measurements.

The forbidden F II profiles at 18 and 26 micron from SN 1987A have been measured with a resolution of about 400 km/s. The central portion of each profile is well-fitted by a Gaussian with a FWHM of 2900 and 2500 km/s, respectively. The centroid velocity is redshifted relative to the LSR by 450 + or - 200 km/s at 18 microns and by 680 + or - 200 km/s at 26 microns. The integrated line fluxes alone imply a maximum expansion velocity of about 2000 km/s and a minimum expansion velocity much less than the maximum. A significant fraction of the iron has mixed with the overlying hydrogen regions. There is a high-velocity emission feature at about +3500 km/s relative to the main emission peak which contains about 3 percent of the total iron mass and has T about 2600 K. The measured 26 micron line flux corresponds to a total singly ionized iron mass of 0.026 solar. The line fluxes and profiles are inconsistent with a physically thin shell of gas and show that there is a wide range of expansion velocities for the iron.

Systematic emission and absorption surveys have been conducted for high-velocity H I in the direction of 63 bright continuum sources. High-velocity emisison is detected along 18 of these 63 directions with a threshold about a factor of 2 better than previous, much more extensive surveys. No high-velocity absorption was found in any of the directions. The sky distribution of the high-velocity emission and the column density distribution agree with larger surveys. Detailed emission maps in the vicinity of each continuum source show that the variations in column density within a high-velocity cloud are similar to the variations between high-velocity clouds. A previously discovered high-velocity cloud at high galactic latitude, in the direction of part of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies, was mapped. This small cloud is moving away from the galactic plane at v greater than 30 km/s and is probably not self-gravitating. 36 refs.

From an analysis of galactic H I spectra acquired over a period of seven months, we investigate the accuracy of H I profiles obtained with the dual circular feed at Arecibo Observatory. The H I stray radiation contribution is estimated from a comparison of H I spectra toward the moon with H I spectra in the same direction when the moon is absent. The profile areas of corrected H I spectra are accurate to 3%, while individual features are accurate to 15%. At velocities where the H I emission is less than 3 K, the observed stray radiation is less than 0.5 K.

Absorption by galactic H/sub 2/CO has been observed with the lambda6 cm system at Arecibo towards the extragalactic sources 3C 123 and 3C 154. Towards 3C 123, which lies behind part of the Taurus cloud complex, there is both a broad and a remarkably narrow spectral component. The narrow component is at a velocity of 4.40 km s/sup -1/. It has a fitted width of only 0.12 km s/sup -1/. There is no evidence for H/sub 2/CO at a velocity of 5.5 km s/sup -1/, where other molecules have been observed. A VLA synthesis map of the H/sub 2/CO absorption has been obtained towards 3C 123. This map shows that the optical depth across 3C 123 varies less than 15% on angular scales of 3''--20''. At the estimated distance of the molecular cloud, these correspond to 0.003--0.02 pc. The velocity peak and width are constant to 0.15 km s/sup -1/ over the extent of 3C 123. Upper limits are given for H/sub 2/CO absorption towards 3C 75, 3C 138, 3C 348, 3C 390, 3C 410, and 3C 454.3.

The properties of interstellar H I are investigated using high-velocity resolution, Arecibo emission-absorption spectra in the direction of 40 radio continuum sources, including 21 at low Galactic latitude. Comparison of the data with the results of previous studies confirms the earlier suggestion that the H I density in the nearest 100 pc is lower than the disk average by about a factor of two and the separation of H I emission into material associated with absorbing 'clouds' and physically independent, not strongly absorbing material. A comparison of lines of sight with different geometries supports the suggestion that spin temperatures are higher far above the Galactic disk. There is little correlation between the properties of the H I emission fluctuations on 3.8 arcmin separations and the properties of either the emission or absorption profiles.

A simple model for the ejecta of SN 1987A is used to show that the expected fluxes in infared fine structure lines from nickel, cobalt, iron, argon, sulfur, silicon, and neon are likely to be detectable for several years following the supernova explosion. Energy sources due to radioactive decay and a central pulsar are considered separately. Most of the mass of heavy elements resides in the inner, pure metal shells of the ejecta, so that the infrared lines will probe the temperature, ejecta masses, and dynamics of this region and not the overlying, hydrogen-rich envelope.

Observations of OH emission/absorption toward 19 low-Galactic-latitude background-continuum sources are reported. Data obtained at 1.665 and 1.667 GHz using the 12-m radio telescope at Arecibo Observatory during February-March 1984, are presented in extensive tables and graphs and characterized in detail, with reference to theoretical models. A total of 11 OH absorption features were detected toward nine of the sources, with an average of one feature of optical depth 0.02 or greater per 5 kpc of path length and an average column density of 1.6 x 10 to the 12th/sq cm (corrected to b = 90 deg).

The first observation of the 26-micron line from singly ionized iron in SN 1987A is reported. The total flux is 4.5 + or - 0.9 x 20 to the -18th W/sq cm. The line width (FWHM) is 4000 + or - 600 km/s. The minimum iron mass is found to be about 0.02 solar, indicating that the emission originates in the heavy element mantle and not in the hydrogen-rich envelope. Since this mass is less than estimates based on near-infrared measurements or the optical light curve, the emission is probably optically thick. In this case, the flux measurement together with the observed line width suggest a temperature of 3500 + or - 1500 K for the mantle. The broad line width suggests that mixing of the ejected iron with lighter elements in overlying layers has occurred.
