To directly detect the spatial distribution of a plasma current during the collisional merging of two field-reversed configurations (FRCs) in the FAT-CM (FRC Amplification via Translation–Collisional Merging) device, an internal current probe using Rogowski coils has been developed. An FRC is a type of magnetically confined plasma maintained by a diamagnetic plasma current flowing in the toroidal direction. Self-organized FRC formation and increased poloidal flux have been observed following the destructive perturbation during the collision in collisional merging FRC formation when two initial-plasmoids collide at a relative speed of 300–400 km/s to form one FRC. It is indicated that the toroidal plasma current is driven in those processes. In this research, an internal Rogowski probe was designed and developed to have a high-frequency response to capture a rapid change of the plasma current in a few microseconds during the collision/merging process. The FRC plasma in FAT-CM has relatively high temperature (∼100 to 200 eV) and high density (∼1020 to 1021 m−3). As a result, the probe was built to be as compact as possible to minimize disruption to the plasma. Because of its high melting point and low Z property, a machinable boron nitride ceramic was chosen to shield the Rogowski coils thermally and electrically from the plasma. All connections and seams were constructed such that the epoxy glue used for the probe assembly was not exposed to the plasma.

In TAE Technologies’ current experimental device, C-2W, neutral beam injection creates a large fast ion population that sustains a field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasma. Diagnosis of these fast ions is therefore critical for understanding the behavior of the FRC. Neutral Particle Analyzers (NPAs) are used to measure the energy spectrum of fast ions that charge exchange on background or beam neutrals and are lost from the plasma. To ensure correct diagnosis of the fast ion population, a calibration check of the NPAs was performed. A novel, generally applicable method for an in situ relative calibration of diagnostics on an unknown source with a small dataset was developed. The method utilizes a machine learning technique, Generalized Additive Models (GAMs), to reconstruct the diagnostic source distribution, and Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) to determine the NPA channel calibration factors. The results on both synthetic and experimental datasets are presented.

Gyrokinetic simulations of long wavelength ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of a field-reversed configuration (FRC) find that zonal flows are nonlinearly generated and are the dominant mechanism for the nonlinear saturation of the ITG instability. After the ITG saturation, zonal flows remain undamped and gradually suppress the turbulent transport to a very low level. In the simulations with collisions, collisional damping gradually reduces zonal flow amplitude to a lower level, which allows finite ITG turbulence intensity and ion heat transport in the SOL. The steady state turbulence intensity and ion heat transport are found to be proportional to the collision frequency. This favorable scaling suggests that minimizing collisions (e.g. increasing temperature, reducing impurity content, etc) and preserving toroidal symmetry could improve plasma confinement in the FRC.

The advanced beam-driven FRC is a Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) with the addition of neutral beam (NB) injection, electrode biasing, and magnetic expander divertors. The resulting configuration has novel features that make it necessary to revisit many key results in FRC theory. Three of these features include (i) a large energetic ion population, (ii) in-principle capability to adjust the electric field and rotation profiles, and (iii) a combination of magnetic and electrostatic confinement of electrons in the SOL. In some fueling scenarios the electron density profile may exhibit a significant peak outside of the separatrix. To explore these features a hybrid fluid/kinetic equilibrium model has been used to reconstruct typical experimental profiles of the C-2W experiment. Results indicate that the energetic ions provide at least 50% of the total plasma pressure. These equilibrium profiles have been used as initial conditions for global, cross-separatrix, turbulent transport simulations using the 3D electrostatic particle-in-cell code ANC. Electrostatic fluctuations were found to nonlinearly saturate at an amplitude which is an order magnitude lower than that observed previously. The tokamak turbulence code GTC code has also been extended to handle FRC physics in the new GTC-X version, which has been used to perform simulations of turbulent transport in the SOL relevant to electrode biasing. It is found that equilibrium × flow shear significantly decreases ion temperature gradient saturation amplitude and ion heat transport. Also in the SOL, a 1D2V continuum code has been developed and applied to parallel electron heat transport. Results show the formation of pre-sheath potential and reduction of parallel electron heat loss close to the ideal ambipolar limit, a result which has been validated by experimental diagnostics. These transport modifications caused by the three novel configuration features help to explain the remarkable plasma performance of the C-2W experiment.

We determined the time-dependent geometry, including high-frequency oscillations, of the plasma density in TAE's C-2W experiment [Gota et al., Nucl. Fusion 59, 112009 (2019)]. This was done as a joint Bayesian reconstruction from a 14-chord FIR interferometer in the midplane, 32 Mirnov probes at the periphery, and 8 shine-through detectors at the targets of the neutral beams. For each point in time, we recovered, with credibility intervals, the radial density profile of the plasma; bulk plasma displacement; and amplitudes, frequencies, and phases of the azimuthal modes n = 1, …, 4. Also reconstructed were the radial profiles of the deformations associated with each of the azimuthal modes. Bayesian posterior sampling was done via Hamiltonian Monte Carlo with custom preconditioning. This gave us a comprehensive uncertainty quantification of the reconstructed values, including correlations and some understanding of multimodal posteriors.

In this study, a newly developed correction method with external magnetic measurements for the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulation of the collisional merging formation of a field-reversed configuration (FRC) realized the estimation of the internal structure of the FRCs without invasive internal measurements. In the collisional merging formation of FRCs, an FRC is formed via merging of two initial FRC-like plasmoids at supersonic/Alfvénic velocity. An invasive diagnostic may also interfere with the collisional merging formation process. A two-dimensional resistive MHD simulation was conducted to evaluate the global behavior and internal structure of FRCs in the collisional merging formation process without invasive measurements. This code simulated the initial formation and collisional merging processes of FRCs including discharge circuits. However, the translation velocity and the pressure of initial FRCs did not simultaneously agree with the experimental values because the magnetic pressure gradient in each formation region could not be reproduced without the artificial adjustment of the initial condition. The experimentally measured current distribution was given as the initial condition of the circuit calculation in the developed correction method. The initial FRCs were successfully translated at the translation velocity and plasma pressure in the corrected simulation, both of which were equivalent to the experiments. The properties of the merged FRCs in the experiments such as volume, total temperature, and average electron density were reproduced in the corrected simulation. The detailed radial profile of the internal magnetic field of the FRC was also measured and found to agree very well with the simulation results.

Linear and nonlinear effects of the equilibrium radial electric field on the ion temperature gradient (ITG) instability in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of a field-reversed configuration have been studied using gyrokinetic particle simulations for a single toroidal mode. Linear simulations with adiabatic electrons find that the E × B flow shear reduces the growth rate and causes a radial tilting of the mode structure on the toroidal plane. Nonlinear simulations find that the E × B flow shear significantly decreases ITG saturation amplitude and ion heat transport in the SOL by reducing both turbulence intensity and eddy size. The turbulence intensity is determined by fluid eddy rotation, which is the dominant saturation mechanism for the SOL ITG instability with a single toroidal mode number. On the other hand, parallel wave-particle decorrelation is the dominant mechanism for the SOL ITG turbulent transport. A random walk model using the guiding center radial excursion as the characteristic length scale and the eddy turnover time as the characteristic time scale fits very well to the scaling of ion heat conductivity with the E × B flow shear.

Energetic beams excite semi-repetitive modes ('staircase mode') in the field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasma. We explore several neural network architectures to detect, and in some cases predict, this type of mode onset. We weigh the performance of these architectures and find that recurrent neural networks (RNNs), specifically long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, outperform all other models we examine. LSTMs can predict the onset of staircase with a lead window of 0.2 ms, which has implications for plasma longevity and is a promising direction for similar analysis in FRC devices in the future.

A quasi-neutral blended drift-Lorentz particle model of the field-reversed configuration (FRC) has been developed and implemented in the particle-in-cell code named ANC. A field-aligned mesh and corresponding mesh operations are constructed for solving self-consistent electric fields in FRC geometry. Particle dynamics are described in cylindrical coordinates to allow for cross-separatrix simulation coupling the core and scrape-off layer regions of the FRC. This new model is successfully verified against analytically derived dispersion relations, and FRC turbulence is studied using the blended model for the first time.

Field-reversed configuration (FRC) Amplification via Translation-Collisional Merging (FAT-CM) experiments have recently commenced to study physics phenomena of colliding and merged FRC plasma states. Two independently formed FRCs are translated into the confinement region of the FAT-CM device, collided near the mid-plane of the device with a relative speed of up to ∼400 km/s, and a final merged FRC plasma state is achieved. To measure internal magnetic field profiles of the translated and merged FRC plasmas as well as to understand its collisional-merging process, an internal magnetic probe array, developed by TAE Technologies, has been installed in the mid-plane of the FAT-CM device. Initial magnetic field measurements indicate that both the translated and the merged FRC plasma states exhibit a clear field-reversed structure, which is qualitatively in good agreement with 2D MHD simulation. It is found and verified that a sufficient mirror field in the confinement region is required for colliding FRCs to be fully merged into a single FRC plasma state.

Active control of field reversed configuration (FRC) devices requires a method to determine the flux surface geometry and dynamic properties of the plasma during both transient and steady-state conditions. The current tomography (CT) method uses Bayesian inference to determine the plasma current density distribution using both the information from magnetic measurements and a physics model in the prior. Here we show that, from the inferred current sources, the FRC topology and its axial stability properties are readily obtained. When Gaussian process priors are used and the forward model is linear, the CT solution involves non-iterative matrix operations and is then ideally suited for deterministic real-time applications. Because no equilibrium assumptions are used in this case, inference of plasma topology and dynamics up to Alfvenic frequencies then becomes possible. Inference results for the C-2U device exhibit self-consistency of motions and forces during Alfvenic transients, as well as good agreement with plasma imaging diagnostics., It is important to understand the fast plasma dynamics in the operation of fusion plasma devices. Here the authors demonstrate the inference on the internal field reversed configuration magnetic topology and their occurrence during fast Alfvenic transient phenomena in C-2U device.

C-2 is a unique, large compact-toroid (CT) device at Tri Alpha Energy that produces field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasmas by colliding and merging oppositely directed CTs. Significant progress has recently been made on C-2, achieving ~5 ms stable plasmas with a dramatic improvement in confinement, far beyond the prediction from the conventional FRC scaling. This stable, long-lived FRC plasma state is called the high-performance FRC (HPF) regime. The key approaches to achieve the HPF regime are as follows: (i) dynamic FRC formation by collision/merging of super-Alfvenic CTs, (ii) effective control of stability and transport by end-on plasma guns and neutral-beam (NB) injection, and (iii) active wall conditioning using titanium and lithium gettering systems. Numerous efforts have been made at Tri-Alpha Energy (TAE) to theoretically explore the physics of microwave electron heating in field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasmas. For the fixed 2D profiles of plasma density and temperature for both electrons and thermal ions and equilibrium field of the C-2U machine, simulations with GENRAY-C ray-tracing code have been conducted for the ratios of ω/ω ci[D] in the range of 6 - 20. Launch angles and antenna radial and axial positions have been optimized in order to simultaneously achieve good wave penetration into the core of FRC plasmas and efficient power damping on electrons. It is found that in an optimal regime, single pass absorption efficiency is 100% and most of the power is deposited inside the separatrix of FRC plasmas, with power damping efficiency of about 72% on electrons and less than 19% on ions. Calculations have clearly demonstrated that substantial power absorption on electrons is mainly attributed to high beta enhancement of magnetic pumping; complete power damping occurs before Landau damping has a significant effect on power absorption.

An economic magnetic fusion reactor favours a high ratio of plasma kinetic pressure to magnetic pressure in a well-confined, hot plasma with low thermal losses across the confining magnetic field. Field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasmas are potentially attractive as a reactor concept, achieving high plasma pressure in a simple axisymmetric geometry. Here, we show that FRC plasmas have unique, beneficial microstability properties that differ from typical regimes in toroidal confinement devices. Ion-scale fluctuations are found to be absent or strongly suppressed in the plasma core, mainly due to the large FRC ion orbits, resulting in near-classical thermal ion confinement. In the surrounding boundary layer plasma, ion- and electron-scale turbulence is observed once a critical pressure gradient is exceeded. The critical gradient increases in the presence of sheared plasma flow induced via electrostatic biasing, opening the prospect of active boundary and transport control in view of reactor requirements., Magnetic fusion reactors with higher ratio of plasma kinetic pressure to magnetic pressure are economically desirable. The authors demonstrate a path to such a reactor in a field reversed configuration that can attain microstability and reduced particle and thermal fluxes by manipulating the shear flow.

TAE Technologies' research is devoted to producing high temperature, stable, long-lived field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasmas by neutral-beam injection (NBI) and edge biasing/control. The newly constructed C-2W experimental device (also called "Norman") is the world's largest compact-toroid (CT) device, which has several key upgrades from the preceding C-2U device such as higher input power and longer pulse duration of the NBI system as well as installation of inner divertors with upgraded electrode biasing systems. Initial C-2W experiments have successfully demonstrated a robust FRC formation and its translation into the confinement vessel through the newly installed inner divertor with adequate guide magnetic field. They also produced dramatically improved initial FRC states with higher plasma temperatures (Te ~250+ eV; total electron and ion temperature g1.5 keV, based on pressure balance) and more trapped flux (up to ~15 mWb, based on rigid-rotor model) inside the FRC immediately after the merger of collided two CTs in the confinement section. As for effective edge control on FRC stabilization, a number of edge biasing schemes have been tried via open field-lines, in which concentric electrodes located in both inner and outer divertors as well as end-on plasma guns are electrically biased independently. As a result of effective outer-divertor electrode biasing alone, FRC plasma diamagnetism duration has reached up to ~9 ms which is equivalent to C-2U plasma duration. Magnetic field flaring/expansion in both inner and outer divertors plays an important role in creating a thermal insulation on open field-lines to reduce a loss rate of electrons, which leads to improvement of the edge and core FRC confinement properties. Experimental campaign with inner-divertor magnetic-field flaring has just commenced and early result indicates that electron temperature of the merged FRC stays relatively high and increases for a short period of time, presumably by NBI and ExB heating.

We investigate the global properties of drift waves in the beam driven field-reversed configuration (FRC), the C2-U device, in which the central FRC and its scrape-off layer (SOL) plasma are connected with the formation sections and divertors. The ion temperature gradient modes are globally connected and unstable across these regions, while they are linearly stable inside the FRC separatrix. The unstable global drift waves in the SOL show an axially varying structure that is less intense near the central FRC region and the mirror throat areas, while being more robust in the bad curvature formation exit areas.

Department of Physics and Astronomy, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA 90095, USAA high temperature, stable, long-lived field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasma state has been produced in the C-2 device by dynamically colliding and merging two oppositely directed compact toroids, with combining effects of biasing edge plasma near the FRC separatrix from an end-plasma-gun with magnetic-mirror-plugs andof neutral-beam (NB) injection. The plasma-gun creates an inward radial electric field which mitigates the n = 2rotational instability. The gun also produces E×B velocity shear in the FRC edge layer, which may explain observations of improved transport properties. The FRCs are nearly axisymmetric which enables fast ion confinement, and increasing NB power input clearly extends the FRC lifetime. The combined effects of the plasma-gun with mirror-plugs and of NB injection yield anew High Performance FRC regime with confinement times improved by factors 2 to 4 and FRC lifetimes extended from 1 to 3 ms.

Conventional field-reversed configurations (FRC) face notable stability and confinement concerns, which can be ameliorated by introducing and maintaining a significant fast ion population in the system. This is the conjecture first introduced by Norman Rostoker multiple decades ago and adopted as the central design tenet in Tri Alpha Energy’s advanced beam driven FRC concept. In fact, studying the physics of such neutral beam (NB) driven FRCs over the past decade, considerable improvements were made in confinement and stability. Next to NB injection, the addition of axially streaming plasma guns, magnetic end plugs, as well as advanced surface conditioning lead to dramatic reductions in turbulence driven losses and greatly improved stability. In turn, fast ion confinement improved significantly and allowed for the build-up of a dominant fast particle population. This recently led to the breakthrough of sustaining an advanced beam driven FRC, thereby demonstrating successful maintenance of trapped magnetic flux, plasma dimensions and total pressure inventory for times much longer than all characteristic system time scales and only limited by hardware and electric supply constraints.

In modern field-reversed configuration (FRC) experiments (Binderbauer et al 2015 Phys. Plasmas 22 056110) at TAE Technologies, classical FRC instabilities are suppressed by advanced neutral beam injection and edge biasing methods, leading to high plasma confinement and fast ion pressure built-up which is comparable to the bulk plasma pressure. In some of these high performance FRC plasmas, a new macroscopically non-destructive fast ion driven micro-burst instability is observed as periodic small amplitude bursts with frequency down chirping in the diamagnetic drift frequency range, repeating about every 0.1 to 0.5 ms. The occurrence of these micro-bursts and burst-free operation can be controlled by changing the injected neutral beam energy. Major observed characteristics of this new instability are presented. Possible explanation of the phenomenon is suggested.

Different microwave heating scenarios for the C-2 plasmas have been investigated recently with use of both the Genray ray-racing code and the IPF-FDMC full-wave code, and the study was focused on the excitation of the electron Bernstein wave (EBW) with O-mode launch. For a given antenna position on C-2 and the fixed 2D plasma density and equilibrium field profiles, simulations have been done for six selected frequencies (2.45 GHz, 5 GHz, 8 GHz, 18 GHz, 28 GHz, and 50 GHz). Launch angles have been optimized for each case in order to achieve high coupling efficiencies to the EBW by the O-X-B mode conversion process and high power deposition. Results show that among those six frequencies, the case of 8 GHz is the most promising scenario, which has both high mode conversion efficiency (90%) and the relatively deeper power deposition.

This paper describes experiments on the formation and transport, in vacuum and plasma, of a low-energy (70-120 keV), high-intensity (10-30 A/cm/sup 2/), long-pulse (0.5-1/spl mu/s) H/sup +/ ion beam. The beam was generated in a magnetically insulated diode with an applied radial B-field and active hydrogen-puff plasma source at the anode. The combination of a ballistic focusing large area anode (250 cm/sup 2/) with a post-cathode toroidal magnetic lens and straight transport solenoid section provided beam transport to a distance of >1 m with an overall efficiency of /spl ges/ 50%. Two-dimensional single-particle computer simulations of the ion's trajectory in the lens/solenoid system supported optimization of the lens and solenoid parameters.

The paper describes experiments on the generation and transport of a low energy (70–120 keV), high intensity (10–30 A/cm2) microsecond duration H+ ion beam (IB) in vacuum and plasma. The IB was generated in a magnetically insulated diode (MID) with an applied radial B field and an active hydrogen-puff ion source. The annular IB, with an initial density of ji∼10–20 A/cm2 at the anode surface, was ballistically focused to a current density in the focal plane of 50–80 A/cm2. The postcathode collimation and transport of the converging IB were provided by the combination of a “concave” toroidal magnetic lens followed by a straight transport solenoid section. With optimized MID parameters and magnetic fields in the lens/solenoid system, the overall efficiency of IB transport at the exit of the solenoid 1 m from the anode was ∼ 50% with an IB current density of 20 A/cm2. Two-dimensional computer simulations of post-MID IB transport supported the optimization of system parameters.

A thorough analysis of energetic particle modes (EPM) stability and mode structures is presented for tokamaks with hollow q profiles. Focusing on the region near the minimum-q surface, EPM gap modes and resonant EPMs are shown to exist as solutions of the same dispersion relation. By controlling the fast ion distribution function, or, equivalently, their fundamental dynamical properties, a smooth transition between these two classes of modes is obtained within the EPM dispersion relation. When toroidal coupling becomes important, it is demonstrated that EPMs may have either single or double hump radial structures. The local analyses of EPM stability and mode structures near the minimum-q surface are put in the broader framework of EPM stability and EPM induced transport in tokamaks with hollow q profiles and a brief summary is also given of present understanding of such problems based on results of three-dimensional nonlinear hybrid magneto–hydrodynamic–gyrokinetic simulations. The transport phenomenon of a Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) is studied using the newly developed two-dimensional code Q2D, which couples a magnetohydrodynamic code with a Monte Carlo code for the beam component. The simulation by Q2D of the transport parallel to the simple open θ-pinch fields and its associated outflow phenomenon shows an excellent agreement with one of the leading theories, elevating the Q2D validity and simultaneously deepening the theoretical understanding of this fundamental process. We find a sharp distinction between the evolved radial density profiles of the FRC and mirror plasmas as a result of the transport processes, underpinning the crucial role of the closed flux surfaces of the FRC to enhance the confinement over that of the mirror. We characterize the scrap-off layer (SOL) transport by including the mirror trapping effects, and we find a relationship between the confinement time in the SOL and the ion collisional time. Field Reversed Configurations (FRCs) heated by neutral beam injection may include a large fast ion pressure that significantly modifies the equilibrium. A new analysis is required to characterize such hybrid FRCs, as the simple relations used up to now prove inaccurate. The substantial contributions of fast ions to FRC radial pressure balance and diamagnetism are described. A simple model is offered to reconstruct more accurately the equilibrium parameters of elongated hybrid FRCs. Further modeling requires new measurements of either the magnetic field or the plasma pressure.

It is becoming clear that tokamak anomalous transport is dominated by radially extended non-local modes which originate from strong toroidal coupling of rational surfaces in non-uniform plasmas. To aid in understanding the internal transport barrier (ITB) formed in reversed magnetic shear experiments, in addition to the well known shear flow effect, the article points out an important non-local effect and/or finite size effect which comes from the complex behaviour of the mode over a finite radial region around the minimum q (safety factor) surface. The non-local mode, which is characterized by its radial extent and the degree of tilting in the poloidal direction (Δr, θ0), changes its structure depending on the sign of the magnetic shear, and as a result such modes are weakly excited across the qmin surface. This leads to a discontinuity or gap which disconnects the phase relation in the global wave structure across the qmin surface. Once such a discontinuity (or gap) is formed, transport suppression occurs and therefore a transport barrier can be expected near the qmin surface. The existence of this discontinuity is confirmed through use of a toroidal particle simulation. It is also shown that whether such a discontinuity is efficiently established depends on the presence of the radial electric field and the related plasma shear flow.

Drift orbit topologies in the H-1NF heliac are described using guiding centre calculations and by the approximate second adiabatic invariant. Results are presented that are representative of the orbit topologies across the magnetic configuration space of the machine and in the presence of radial electric fields. The trapped particle population can be divided into a number of different subclasses using a scheme based on the number of maxima in parallel kinetic energy between bounce points.

The first measurements of fast-ion D-alpha (FIDA) radiation have been acquired on C-2U, Tri Alpha Energy’s advanced, beam-driven field-reversed configuration (FRC). These measurements are also forward modeled by FIDASIM. This is the first measurement and simulation of FIDA carried out on an FRC topology. FIDA measurements are made of Doppler-shifted Balmer-alpha light from neutralized fast ions using a bandpass filter and photomultiplier tube. One adjustable line-of-sight measured signals at eight locations and eight times during the FRC lifetime over 26 discharges. Filtered signals include only the highest energy ions (>6 keV) and share some salient features with the FIDASIM result. Highly Doppler-shifted beam radiation is also measured with a high-speed camera and is spatially well-correlated with FIDASIM.

A significant improvement of field reversed configuration (FRC) lifetime and plasma confinement times in the C-2 plasma, called High Performance FRC regime, has been observed with neutral beam injection (NBI), improved edge stability, and better wall conditioning [Binderbauer et al., Phys. Plasmas 22, 056110 (2015)]. A Quasi-1D (Q1D) fluid transport code has been developed and employed to carry out transport analysis of such C-2 plasma conditions. The Q1D code is coupled to a Monte-Carlo code to incorporate the effect of fast ions, due to NBI, on the background FRC plasma. Numerically, the Q1D transport behavior with enhanced transport coefficients (but with otherwise classical parametric dependencies) such as 5 times classical resistive diffusion, classical thermal ion conductivity, 20 times classical electron thermal conductivity, and classical fast ion behavior fit with the experimentally measured time evolution of the excluded flux radius, line-integrated density, and electron/ion temperature. A diagnostic technique for measuring the fast-ion energy distribution in a field-reversed configuration plasma was developed and tested on the C-2 experiment. A deuterium neutral beam modulated at 22 kHz is injected into the plasma, producing a localized charge-exchange target for the confined fast protons. The escaping fast neutrals are detected by a neutral particle analyzer. The target beam transverse size (∼15 cm) defines the spatial resolution of the method. The equivalent current density of the target beam is ≤0.15 A/cm(2), which corresponds to a neutral density (∼6 × 10(9) cm(-3)) that highly exceeds the background neutral density in the core of C-2. The deuterium fast-ions due to the target beam (E ∼27 keV), are not confined in C-2 and thus make a negligible contribution to the measured signals.

Field reversed configurations (FRCs) with high confinement are obtained in the C-2 device by combining plasma gun edge biasing and neutral beam injection. The plasma gun creates an inward radial electric field that counters the usual FRC spin-up. The $n=2$ rotational instability is stabilized without applying quadrupole magnetic fields. The FRCs are nearly axisymmetric, which enables fast ion confinement. The plasma gun also produces $E\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}B$ shear in the FRC edge layer, which may explain the observed improved particle transport. The FRC confinement times are improved by factors 2 to 4, and the plasma lifetimes are extended from 1 to up to 4 ms.

A high temperature field reversed configuration (FRC) has been produced in the newly built, world’s largest compact toroid (CT) facility, C-2, by colliding and merging two high-β CTs produced using the advanced field-reversed θ-pinch technology. This long-lived, stable merged state exhibits the following key properties: (1) apparent increase in the poloidal flux from the first pass to the final merged state, (2) significantly improved confinement compared to conventional θ-pinch FRCs with flux decay rates approaching classical values in some cases, (3) strong conversion from kinetic energy into thermal energy with total temperature (Te + Ti) exceeding 0.5 keV, predominantly into the ion channel. Detailed modeling using a new 2-D resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code, LamyRidge, has demonstrated, for the first time, the formation, translation, and merging/reconnection dynamics of such extremely high-β plasmas.

A hot stable field-reversed configuration (FRC) has been produced in the C-2 experiment by colliding and merging two high-β plasmoids preformed by the dynamic version of field-reversed θ-pinch technology. The merging process exhibits the highest poloidal flux amplification obtained in a magnetic confinement system (over tenfold increase). Most of the kinetic energy is converted into thermal energy with total temperature (T{i}+T{e}) exceeding 0.5 keV. The final FRC state exhibits a record FRC lifetime with flux confinement approaching classical values. These findings should have significant implications for fusion research and the physics of magnetic reconnection.

Conventional field-reversed configurations (FRCs), high-beta, prolate compact toroids embedded in poloidal magnetic fields, face notable stability and confinement concerns. These can be ameliorated by various control techniques, such as introducing a significant fast ion population. Indeed, adding neutral beam injection into the FRC over the past half-decade has contributed to striking improvements in confinement and stability. Further, the addition of electrically biased plasma guns at the ends, magnetic end plugs, and advanced surface conditioning led to dramatic reductions in turbulence-driven losses and greatly improved stability. Together, these enabled the build-up of a well-confined and dominant fast-ion population. Under such conditions, highly reproducible, macroscopically stable hot FRCs (with total plasma temperature of ∼1 keV) with record lifetimes were achieved. These accomplishments point to the prospect of advanced, beam-driven FRCs as an intriguing path toward fusion reactors. This paper reviews key results and presents context for further interpretation.

[1] A one-dimensional linear hybrid gyrokinetic-magnetohydrodynamic δf particle in cell simulation code is developed to study the detailed mechanisms of energetic particle drift-bounce resonant destabilization of Alfven modes in the ring-current region of the magnetosphere. The model plasma is composed of a cold (10–100eV) component which provides inertia plus a tenuous energetic (∼10 keV) “ring-current” component which provides both resonant destabilization and compressional stabilization of MHD modes. Full kinetic effects such as finite Larmor radii and particle magnetic bounce and precessional drift motions are retained nonperturbatively. A simple finite β dipolar equilibrium model is assumed (β is the ratio between plasma and magnetic pressures). Simulations show excellent agreement with earlier perturbative analyses. Results show that when the energetic ion thermal velocity is super-Alfvenic, the ions destabilize both odd and even parity shear Alfven MHD modes via the drift-bounce resonances. The growth rates of the resulting modes scale linearly with plasma β. The most unstable of these modes are found to be drift-bounce resonance destabilized modes with odd parity, with wave numbers such that k⟂ρ ≈ 0.5 at the equator (ρ is the energetic ion Larmor radius). The destabilization typically occurs at a critical wave number k⟂ρ ≈ 0.3. When the wave number is close to this critical value and the plasma β is close to the ideal MHD critical value, the mode frequency is determined by the energetic particle dynamics, similar to the energetic particle modes (EPMs) observed in laboratory fusion plasma experiments. When the energetic particles have Alfvenic or sub-Alfvenic thermal velocity, they contribute to damping of the MHD modes via the bounce resonance.

A neutral particle bolometer (NPB) has been designed and implemented on Tri Alpha Energys C-2 device in order to spatially and temporally resolve the charge-exchange losses of fast-ion populations originating from neutral beam injection into field-reversed configuration plasmas. This instrument employs a silicon photodiode as the detection device with an integrated tungsten filter coating to reduce sensitivity to light radiation. Here we discuss the technical aspects and calibration of the NPB, and report typical NPB measurement results of wall recycling effects on fast-ion losses. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

We describe an implementation of a particle orbit-following simulation approach to the Monte Carlo calculation of neoclassical transport coecients which has been developed for application to the H-1NF Heliac. We compare and contrast some Monte Carlo transport coecient estimators that can be used in such computer codes, from both physical and computational perspectives, and we make recommendations for their use. Transport coecient calculations are performed for the H-1NF in conditions that will be available after the full National Facility upgrade.
