Bone tissue and breast tissue are interrelated, as demonstrated by breast microcalcifications, breast cancer bone metastases, bone morphogenetic proteins, and Wnt signaling. In addition, osteoblasts and osteoclasts represent an important switch of tumor cell dormancy during bone metastasis. Damage to both types of tissues mentioned above is highly prevalent, especially in postmenopausal women, and manifests itself in osteoporosis and breast cancer. Sea buckthorn (Elaeagnus rhamnoides L.), a botanical drug with high antioxidant, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and regenerative properties, has great therapeutic potential due to the unique composition of its bioactive metabolites. This review aimed to summarize the current knowledge from in vitro and in vivo studies on the effect of sea buckthorn, as well as its most widespread flavonoids isorhamnetin, quercetin, and kaempferol, on bone and breast tissue health. In vitro studies have revealed the beneficial impacts of sea buckthorn and aforementioned flavonoids on both bone health (bone remodeling, mineralization, and oxidative stress) and breast tissue health (cancer cell proliferation, apoptosis, tumor growth, and metastatic behavior). In vivo studies have documented their protective effects against disturbed bone microarchitecture and reduced bone strength in animal models of osteoporosis, as well as against tumor expansion and metastatic properties in animal xenograft models. In any case, further research and clinical trials are needed to carefully evaluate the potential therapeutic benefits of sea buckthorn and its flavonoids. BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSION Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) pulp oil is rich in functional components; however, low water solubility and stability limit its applications. This study fabricated sea buckthorn pulp oil microcapsules using whey protein isolate (WPI), soy protein isolate (SPI), sodium caseinate (NaCN), gum arabic (GA), starch sodium octenylsuccinate (OSAS) and SPI mixed with chitosan (CHI). The influences of these wall materials on physicochemical properties, release behavior and digestibility were explored.Protein‐based wall materials (WPI, NaCN, SPI) demonstrated lower bulk densities due to their porous structures and larger particle sizes, while GA and OSAS produced denser microcapsules. Encapsulation efficiency was the highest for protein‐based microcapsules (79.41–89.12%) and the lowest for GA and OSAS. The surface oil percentage of protein‐based microcapsules (1.41–4.40%) was lower than that of the other microcapsules. Protein‐based microcapsules showed concave and cracked surfaces, while GA and OSAS microcapsules were spherical and smooth. CHI improved reconstitution performance, leading to faster dissolution. During simulated gastrointestinal digestion, protein‐based microcapsules released more free fatty acids (FFAs) in the intestinal phase, while CHI‐modified SPI microcapsules showed a delayed release pattern due to thicker walls.Protein‐based wall materials were more effective for sea buckthorn pulp oil microencapsulation, providing higher encapsulation efficiency, better flow properties and releasing more FFAs. The addition of CHI led to the layer‐by‐layer self‐assembly of the microcapsule wall and resulted in sustained release during in vitro intestinal digestion. The increasing demand for plant‐based beverages with improved functional and sensory qualities has guided this study, which examines the bioactive content, functional, and sensory properties of a rice, apple pomace, and sea buckthorn beverage (RASB) fermented with probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We found out that total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and β‐carotene were significantly higher in samples with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, particularly in coculture samples. These samples also exhibited elevated alcohol by volume (ABV). Monoculture samples showed increased total flavonol content (TFLC), total anthocyanin content (TAC), and proanthocyanidin. The RASB‐LP sample, containing only Lactobacillus plantarum, revealed the highest antioxidant properties, evidenced by DPPH (94.13 ± 0.05%) and ABTS (97.69 ± 0.09%) assays. Interestingly, 3‐methylbutyl 3‐methylbutanoate, abundant in the unfermented control, was hydrolyzed to 3‐methyl‐1‐butanol in fermented samples, especially those containing Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Sensory evaluation evidenced that RASB‐LP scored highest for aroma and overall acceptability. FTIR analysis also indicated changes in functional groups of RASB samples. Together, our findings suggest that a novel probiotic cereal beverage with enhanced quality can be developed through the addition of fruit and fruit pomace, coupled with fermentation using Lactobacillus plantarum LP28 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Sea buckthorn has lipid‐lowering properties and is widely used in the development of functional foods. In this study, a probiotic (Lactobacillus plantarum, Lp10211) with cholesterol‐lowering potential and acid and bile salt resistant was screened for the fermentation of sea buckthorn juice. Changes in the active ingredients, such as sugars and phenolics, before and after fermentation, as well as their in vitro lipid‐lowering activities, were compared. The contents of reducing and total sugars decreased substantially after fermentation. Lp10211 primarily utilized fructose for growth and reproduction, with a utilization rate of 76.9%. The phenolic compound content of sea buckthorn juice increased by 37.06% after fermentation and protected the phenolic components from degradation (protocatechuic and p‐coumaric acids) and produced new polyphenol (shikimic acid). Enhanced inhibition of pancreatic lipase activity (95.42%) and cholesterol micellar solubility (59.15%) was evident. The antioxidant properties of the fermentation broth were improved. Notably, Lp10211 preserved the color and reversed browning in sea buckthorn juice. The collective findings indicate that fermentation of sea buckthorn juice by Lp10211 may enhance the functional components and lipid‐lowering activity of sea buckthorn, which may provide a new approach for the development of lipid‐lowering foods. Food waste and by-products are intricately linked to sustainable food production, as reducing waste can play a significant role in achieving a more sustainable and efficient food system. Sustainable utilization and recovery of by-products can significantly contribute by creating strategies that can lead to cost savings and increased efficiency across the food supply chain. Worldwide, more than 40% of whey from cheese production is discarded, resulting in the loss of valuable nutrients and potentially polluting the environment. Effective use of whey reduces environmental impact and enhances manufacturing sustainability. Thus, a circular approach to food waste management in the dairy industry supports sustainability goals and creates opportunities for innovation. Whey contains most of the soluble components of milk, including a large number of serum proteins and all the essential amino acids, making it suitable for producing beverages with high nutritional value. This study aims to produce whey-based beverages with different additions to obtain dairy products with high nutritional value. Three different ingredients, sea buckthorn, ginger, and cinnamon, were chosen for their numerous health benefits to the consumer. Six samples were prepared utilizing both unmodified and deproteinized whey in a 75% proportion, with the addition of 25% sea buckthorn juice, 0.75% ginger juice, and 0.2% cinnamon powder. The resultant samples were packaged in 200 mL bottles and maintained at a controlled temperature of 6 °C to ensure optimal preservation. Given the paramount importance of consumer acceptability in novel beverage development, a comprehensive evaluation was conducted to assess the sensory properties of the formulated beverages. In addition, physico-chemical properties and their evolution over 14 days of storage were examined. The sample containing whey, sea buckthorn juice, ginger juice, and cinnamon powder received the highest marks from the tasters. The values of the physico-chemical parameters varied depending on the type of whey used and the storage period. Thus, a pH of approximately 5 and an acidity between 30 and 80 °T were recorded. The average lactose content was 4%, the average protein content was 2.5%, and the total soluble solids content was 11.5 °Brix. The beverages developed in this study represent viable alternatives for diversifying food production through sustainable, environmentally friendly technological variants. Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the selected quality parameters of innovative beef burgers produced with the addition of açaí and/or sea buckthorn berry juices. Methods: Five variants of innovative burgers were obtained, differing in the proportion of juices in the recipe. The pH of meat stuffing, thermal losses, production yield, color (CIE L*a*b*), content of polyphenolic compounds, degree of oxidation of the lipid fraction (TBARS), and antioxidant activity against ABTS radicals were determined. Anti-diabetic activity was measured as the ability to inhibit α-glucosidase and dipeptidyl peptidase−4 activity. A sensory evaluation was also performed. Results: Beef burgers formulated with açaí and sea buckthorn juices had up to five times higher total polyphenol content than burgers without added juices. The addition of the juices increased antioxidant activity against ABTS radicals (from 42 to 440 µmol/L/100 g) and effectively inhibited oxidation of the lipid fraction of the beef burgers. Recipe modifications resulted in changes in the color parameters of the beef burgers and had a positive effect on the sensory quality attributes evaluated. Beef burgers containing 0.5 g of açaí juice and 1.0 g of sea buckthorn juice were rated the best in terms of acceptability of appearance, aroma, color, juiciness, and tenderness. The addition of açaí and sea buckthorn juice did not increase the inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase and dipeptidyl peptidase-IV of the innovative beef burgers. Conclusions: The proposed recipe modification may be an effective way to fortify beef burgers with phytochemicals with antioxidant properties while maintaining their sensory properties. In order to clarify the inhibition of total flavonoids purified extract (TFSE) of sea buckthorn peel residue on pancreatic lipase, this research optimized the purification condition of total flavonoids crude extract (TFCE) of sea buckthorn peel residue using AB-8 macroporous resin by means of static and dynamic adsorption and desorption experiment. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-MS) was used to analyze the component of TFSE. In addition, the inhibitory effect and types of TFSE on pancreatic lipase were explored through the method of nitrophenyl butyrate combined with enzymatic reaction kinetics. The results showed that the optimal purification conditions for AB-8 macroporous resin were a sample concentration of 2.2 mg/mL, a sample pH of 5.0, a sample volume of 140 mL, and a sample flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The volume fraction of ethanol was 75% with the eluent being 120 mL and the elution flow rate being 1.5 mL/min. After separation and purification under these conditions, the purity of TFSE increased from 9.786% to 50.204%. The total of 39 phenolic compounds were identified from TFSE with flavonoids like rutin, catechins, and quercetin-3-O-glucoside being the main compounds. TFSE had a strong inhibition on pancreatic lipase with the IC50 being 12.46 mg/mL. In addition, the inhibition type was determined to be non-competitive inhibition by using double reciprocal plot method of Lineweaver-Burk with an inhibition constant Ki being 10.21 mg/mL. Various seeds, including sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) seeds, are sources of different bioactive compounds. They can show anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, anti-hyperlipidemic, antibacterial, antioxidant, or other biological properties in in vitro and in vivo models. Our preliminary in vitro results have demonstrated that the extracts from raw (no thermal processing) and roasted (thermally processed) sea buckthorn seeds have antioxidant potential and anticoagulant activity. However, it was unclear which compounds were responsible for these properties. Therefore, in continuation of our previous study, the extracts were fractionated by C18 chromatography. Phytochemical analysis of three fractions (a, b, and c) from raw sea buckthorn seeds and four fractions (d, e, f, and g) from roasted sea buckthorn seeds were performed. Several in vitro assays were also conducted to determine the antioxidant and procoagulant/anticoagulant potential of the fractions and two of their major constituents—isorhamnetin 3-O-β-glucoside7-O-α-rhamnoside and serotonin. LC–MS analyses showed that serotonin is the dominant constituent of fractions c and f, which was tentatively identified on the basis of its HRMS and UV spectra. Moreover, fractions c and f, as well as b and e, contained different B-type proanthocyanidins. Fractions b and e consisted mainly of numerous glycosides of kaempferol, quercetin, and isorhamnetin. The results of oxidative stress assays (measurements of protein carbonylation, lipid peroxidation, and thiol groups oxidation) showed that out of all the tested fractions, fraction g (isolated from roasted seeds and containing mainly dihexoses, and serotonin) demonstrated the strongest antioxidant properties. Background: Paper mulberry is a promising alternative fodder source due to its high protein and the abundance of active components. However, paper mulberry often faces susceptibility to contamination during silage fermentation, and there is a need to improve the quality of silage fermentation of paper mulberry through exotic additives. Sea buckthorn pomace (BP) is a feed additive containing antimicrobial and antioxidant substances that help to enhance silage fermentation. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of BP and Lactiplantibacillus as additives on silage fermentation and bacterial community of paper mulberry. Results: The results showed that BP and Lactiplantibacillus significantly reduced the pH and ammonium nitrogen content of paper mulberry silage (P < 0.05) and significantly increased the content of lactic acid and acetic acid (P < 0.05), resulting in more residual water-soluble carbohydrate and crude protein contents and less fiber content relative to the control. The key microorganisms in paper mulberry silage fermentation are Lactiplantibacillus pentosus and Weissella cibaria. Among these, Lactiplantibacillus favored a rapid increase in Lactiplantibacillus pentosus abundance during the pre-silage fermentation period, whereas BP favored the promotion of Lactiplantibacillus pentosus growth, resulting in higher contents of lactic and acetic acid than those of the control. Conclusions: Simultaneously adding Lactiplantibacillus and BP can effectively improve the quality of paper mulberry silage and increase the abundance of beneficial microorganisms in paper mulberry silage. Background: Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides), a deciduous species plant, is widely distributed around the globe, and native to the cold-temperate regions of Europe and Asia. This medicinal herb contains several bioactive constituents including chlorogenic acid. The conventional methods used for the extraction of phenolic antioxidants from natural herbs often result in low yields, high toxicity, and pose environmental hazards limiting their effectiveness and scalability. Therefore, green extraction techniques using deep eutectic solvents, composed of natural, non-toxic, and biodegradable components were applied for extraction of chlorogenic acid from sea buckthorn weed. Fourteen deep eutectic solvent mixtures were prepared and evaluated for extraction yield of chlorogenic acid. Parameters such as hydrogen bond donor-to-hydrogen bond acceptor ratio, liquid-to-solid ratio, shaking speed, and shaking time were optimized for the best mixture. Results: The combination of lactic acid and maltose (1:1) was found to give best extraction yield using response surface methodology. The deep eutectic solvent system under optimum conditions produced 12.2 g/100 g of crude extract sea buckthorn containing 174.7 mg gallic acid equivalents (mg GA)/g) of extract. Moreover, the optimized extract exhibited appreciable radical scavenging capacity (91%), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (11.2% of extract), and inhibition of peroxide in linoleic acid (80.6%). High-performance liquid chromatography-based characterization revealed the extracts contained chlorogenic acid (20.1 mg/g of extract) as the major constituent. Conclusions: In summary, the adoption of DES for the extraction of bioactive phenolic constituents from sea buckthorn offers multiple benefits, including economic efficiency, enhanced extraction performance, and environmental sustainability. The findings of this study not only advance the understanding of DES in phytochemical extraction but also pave the way for broader application of green solvents in the natural products industry. Future research should focus on further optimizing DES formulations and scaling up the extraction process to fully realize the potential of this innovative extraction method in commercial applications. Summary: Sea buckthorn (SB) is used in cuisines and herbal remedies due to its remarkable nutritional composition and health‐enhancing properties. The phenolic compounds present in SB plant include phenolic acids (gallic, p‐coumaric, protocatechuic and ferulic acids), flavonols (isorhamnetin, quercetin and kaempferol), flavan‐3‐ols and polymeric procyanidins. The highest content of these compounds was reported in branches and leaves than corresponding edible parts of the plant. The antioxidant properties of SB are related to content and composition of phenolic compounds in different plant parts. The studies reported SB flavonoids (isorhamnetin and quercetin) as main phenolic compounds with medicinal potential and health‐promoting effects. The present review summarises information available in recent studies on phenolic composition, phenolic content, flavonoid content, antioxidant activity and health‐promoting activities (anti‐oxidant, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, anti‐inflammatory, anti‐diabetic and obesity management) of SB that can be used in curtailing various acute and chronic maladies. BACKGROUND: Sea buckthorn has the functions of antioxidation, antitumor, anti‐inflammation and regulating energy metabolism. In order to investigate the effects of sea buckthorn powder and sea buckthorn flavonoids on the antioxidant properties, immune function and muscle fatty acid composition of common carp, an oral feeding experiment was carried out. RESULTS: The administration of glucose significantly reduced the levels of glutathione and the activity of total antioxidant capacity enzyme in serum and hepatopancreas, while concurrently upregulating the level of malondialdehyde (MDA)(P < 0.05). Conversely, oral intake of sea buckthorn powder and flavonoids increased antioxidant enzyme activity and decreased MDA levels. In terms of antioxidant molecular indicators, sea buckthorn powder and sea buckthorn flavonoids significantly increased the mRNA levels of nuclear factor NF‐E2‐related factor (nrf2) in the hepatopancreas and muscle. Meanwhile, mRNA expression levels of downstream antioxidant‐related genes (gr, cat, gpx, and sod) regulated by Nrf2 were also upregulated. In the immune aspects, the mRNA expression levels of proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin‐6 (il‐6), interleukin‐1β (il‐1β) and nuclear factor‐κB (nf‐κb), were reduced but the expressions of anti‐inflammatory cytokines, such as growth factor‐β (tgf‐β) and interleukin‐10 (il‐10), were enhanced in the head kidney and spleen tissues after oral administration with sea buckthorn. In terms of muscle fatty acid composition, the ratio of n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)/n‐6 PUFA was notably higher after administering sea buckthorn flavonoids than that of the glucose group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that oral administration of sea buckthorn powder and sea buckthorn flavonoids significantly enhanced the antioxidant capacity and immune response and improved the muscle fatty acid compositions in common carp, and also mitigated the adverse effects of glucose treatment to a certain extent. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of ethanol extracts from sea buckthorn and Cornelian cherry fruits and leaves on physiology of gastrointestinal tract cells. We used three cell lines relevant to the types of cells, which are exposed to bioactive compounds after oral administration, namely intestinal absorptive cells (Caco-2/HT-29 MTX model), hepatocytes (HepG2 cells) and immunocompetent cells (RAW 264.7 and P388D1 monocytes). The contents of antioxidant and bioactive polyphenols, such as cinnamic, caffeic and p-coumaric acids, rutin, myricetin, resveratrol, quercetin, apigenin and kaempferol, were assessed in the extracts using HPLC chromatography. The application of the extracts to Caco-2/HT-29-MTX cultures increased enterocyte differentiation markers (alkaline phosphatase and villin1 level) and goblet cell markers (mucins) over a fortnight. The extracts reduced lipid droplet size in hepatocytes challenged with hyperglycaemic glucose concentration, insulin and palmitate. Sea buckthorn leaf, fruit and Cornelian cherry leaf extracts blocked oxidative burst in the PMA-stimulated monocytes, while the sea buckthorn leaf and Cornelian cherry fruit extracts downregulated lipopolysaccharide-induced NO and IL-1β, respectively. The results indicate that the tested extracts modulate the behaviour of cells in the gastrointestinal tract in a beneficial way, especially regarding lipid accumulation and innate immunity actions. Sea buckthorn is a promising ingredient for the food industry because it is a good source of vitamins, polyphenols, phytosterols, etc. In this research, it is the first time that aqueous extracts of lyophilized sea buckthorn (LSB) 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 3% w/w were used to enrich set-type yogurts. Therefore, fermentation kinetics, hardness, color, titratable acidity, syneresis, water holding capacity, total phenolic content microstructure, and sensory analysis were investigated. Extracts of lyophilized sea buckthorn shorten the yogurt fermentation time, change the microstructure, reduce syneresis, and increase water-holding capacity compared to plain yogurt. Also, the titratable acidity for all yogurts remained the same but the total phenolic content of yogurts increased as the concentration of extracts from lyophilized sea buckthorn increased. The color parameters of the fortified set-type yogurts were affected by the color of the sea buckthorn extract with increasing a* and b* values according to extract concentrations. Finally, yogurts fortified with 0.5% and 1.0% w/w extracts of LSB have good quality characteristics, increased total phenolic content, and higher scores of being liked compared to the rest of the enriched samples. Moreover, fractions c and f, as well as b and e, contained different B-type proanthocyanidins. Fractions b and e consisted mainly of numerous glycosides of kaempferol, quercetin, and isorhamnetin. The results of oxidative stress assays (measurements of protein carbonylation, lipid peroxidation, and thiol groups oxidation) showed that out of all the tested fractions, fraction g (isolated from roasted seeds and containing mainly dihexoses, and serotonin) demonstrated the strongest antioxidant properties.

Objective(s): Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a malignant pulmonary vascular disease with high mortality. Isorhamnetin (ISO), one of the main natural flavonoids extracted from sea buckthorn, has pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative and antioxidant. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of ISO on PAH and its relationship with the phosphorylation of the c-Src tyrosine kinase (p-c-src)/NOX1 signaling pathway. Materials and Methods: Ninety-five rats were randomly divided into five groups. The normal group received only a subcutaneous injection of saline, while the other groups received a subcutaneous injection of monocrotaline(MCT) (60 mg/kg) to establish a PAH model. The treatment group received ISO (50, 100, 150 mg/kg/d) treatment for 21 days, and after 21 days, all rat lung tissues were separated. Results: The results showed that ISO could significantly improve the hemodynamics of MCT-induced PAH rats, such as mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) and right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP), and had inhibitory effects on right ventricular hypertrophy in PAH rats, and on pulmonary vascular remodeling in PAH rats. In addition, ISO can reduce the content of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in PAH rats, increase the expression of Nrf2 protein in the lung tissue of PAH rats, activate the antioxidant system, enhance the activity of SOD in lung tissue of PAH rats, and inhibit NOX1, 5-HTT, p-c-src and Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen(PCNA) protein expression, and decrease MDA content. Objective: To predict the mechanism of sea buckthorn in the treatment of alcoholic liver injury based on network pharmacology, and to verify the efficacy of sea buckthorn in the treatment of alcoholic liver injury by establishing an animal model of alcoholic liver injury in zebrafish. Methods: Through the traditional chinese medicine systems pharmacology (TCMSP) and Uniprot database, the effective components and their targets were collected. Venny2.1 was used to find the intersection targets. GeneCards and OMIM databases were used to collect and screen disease targets. STRING v12.0 database was used for PPI network analysis. PDB and PubChem were used to confirm protein structure and small molecular structure. The correlation network of sea buckthorn in the treatment of alcoholic liver injury was constructed by Cytoscape (Version 3.9.1) software network diagram. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes (KEGG) database pathway enrichment analysis were performed on the common targets using the Metascape database. Functional verification was performed by zebrafish experiments: Wild-type AB strain zebrafish 3 days after fertilization (3 dpf) were selected. The normal group was fed with normal feeding water, and the other groups were fed in 2% anhydrous ethanol solution to establish an alcoholic liver injury model. Results: After screening, 33 active components of sea buckthorn were obtained, mainly including quercetin, sunflower, catechin and so on. There were 1434 potential targets for the treatment of alcoholic liver injury, including ADH1C, CTNNB1, TGFB1 and so on. This study investigated the effects of hot air drying (HAD), infrared-assisted hot air drying (IR-HAD), vacuum freeze drying (VFD), and pulsed-vacuum drying (PVD) on the drying characteristics, color, microstructure, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), vitamin C (Vc) content, and the odor analysis using electronic nose of sea buckthorn pomace. The results showed that IR-HAD exhibited the highest drying rate and the shortest drying time (250"min). PVD exhibited the highest TPC, TFC, and Vc content while maintaining a color difference Î"E value closest to that of the fresh sample. PVD microstructure exhibited no collapse, fewer pores, and smaller cracks than the IR-HAD and VFD microstructures. Furthermore, the PVD pomace displayed the lowest reactivity to sulfides and ethanol compounds. The comprehensive analysis suggests that PVD holds promise as a drying method for sea buckthorn pomace and provides valuable insights for selecting an appropriate drying method for sea buckthorn pomace. Objective: To improve the taste of sea buckthorn juice and remove the bitter substance isorhamnetin glycoside. Methods: Fermentation of sea buckthorn juice with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum to study the growth curves of probiotics, the changes of various indexes such as total phenolic content and antioxidant activity during the fermentation process, as well as the changes of isorhamnetin glycosides and isorhamnetin content. Results: The sea buckthorn juice fermented by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 67-25-2 fermentation had its bitter flavour improved and the sensory analysis score reached 85, and the total free phenol content and antioxidant activity of the juice were increased, reaching maximum at 62 h, in which the total phenol content was increased to 598.9 mg GAE/L, and the scavenging rate of the ABTS+ free radicals and the DPPH free radicals were reached 67.5% and 61.8%, respectively. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that total phenol content and isorhamnetin content were significantly positively correlated with DPPH radical scavenging and ABTS+ radical scavenging (P<0.01). Conclusion: The main bitter substance in sea buckthorn, isorhamnetin-3-O-neohesperidin, was significantly (P<0.05) reduced by the fermentation of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 67-25-2, which also significantly (P<0.05) increased the total phenol content and antioxidant activity. This research can serve as a theoretical foundation for the development of functional fermented sea buckthorn foods that contain highly active transformation products and methods for enhancing the taste of sea buckthorn fruit. Carotenoids, the natural pigments that confer the bright orange color of sea buckthorn berries, are also associated with several health benefits, such as antioxidant activity and skin and eye protection. Due to their lipophilic nature and localization, carotenoids are largely retained in the sea buckthorn pomace (SBP) resulting from juice production. Carotenoids from SBP (70.03 mg/100 g DW), extracted and characterized by HPLC-PDA, contained zeaxanthin (free and esterified) and beta-carotene as major compounds. The SBP carotenoids-enriched sunflower oil was further encapsulated in Ca-alginate hydrogel beads (98.4% encapsulation efficiency) using ionotropic gelation. The hydrogel beads were characterized by confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Fairly good stability (>64%) of the encapsulated carotenoids in the alginate hydrogel beads during storage (30 days, 4 °C and 25 °C) was found, with zeaxanthin esters being the most stable compounds, for all the experimental conditions. The bioaccessibility of the total carotenoids (INFOGEST protocol) was 42.1 ± 4.6% from hydrated, and, respectively, 40.8 ± 4% from dehydrated SBP alginate hydrogel beads. The addition of yogurt to the dehydrated hydrogel beads had a positive effect on the bioaccessibility of free and esterified zeaxanthin, but not on that of the carotenes. This study evaluated the impact of the encapsulation of sea buckthorn and grape pomace extracts in liposomal formulations on the retention and release of bioactive compounds and their antioxidant activity. The profile and composition of lipophilic extracts of sea buckthorn and hydrophilic extracts of grape pomace were analyzed. Encapsulation efficiency, retention rate, and the content of bioactive compounds encapsulated in liposomal formulations prepared in two media—water and ethanol—were evaluated. The encapsulation efficiency varied between 84 and 90%, indicating the superior encapsulation of the bioactive compounds. The retention rate varied between 79 and 86%, which indicated the stability of the liposome-encapsulated compounds over time. The antioxidant activity of the encapsulated samples was determined in vitro, under the conditions of gastric (pH 1.8) and intestinal (pH 8.2) digestion, in relation to the non-encapsulated extracts. The antioxidant activity of both liposomal formulations was higher than that of the nonencapsulated extracts during gastric digestion. Moreover, an increase over time in the antioxidant activity, expressed as % DPPH inhibition, was observed for all samples, with around 90% DPPH inhibition for non-encapsulated extracts and 92% for the encapsulated extracts, demonstrating the stability of bioactive compounds in acidic pH. Oppositely, when exposed to intestinal simulated digestion (alkaline pH), the antioxidant activity decreased over time to around 24% DPPH inhibition for both encapsulated and nonencapsulated extracts. Sea buckthorn leaves (SBT_LVs) form notable by-product during harvesting and post-harvest management of the berries. It is already known that sea buckthorn berries are important for their chemical composition and based on this, they occupy a wide field in nutrition. SBT_LVs also have a rich chemical composition, like the berries. The aim of this study was to describe these by-products in the context of protein and complex carbohydrates–dietary fiber fractions, including qualitative and quantitative composition of amino acids. Proximate composition, amino acids, nutritional values of the protein, and dietary fiber fractions of SBT_LVs of four cultivars (cvs.) Ascola, Habego, Hergo, and Leikora were assessed. SBT_LVs from different years of the study had statistically different levels of crude protein, ether extract, crude ash, and nitrogen-free extract (NFE), confirming that the quality of the raw material (leaves) can be significantly modified by habitat conditions. The largest fraction of dietary fiber was neutral detergent fiber (NDF), including the sum of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin, followed by the acid detergent fiber fraction (ADF), consisting of lignin and cellulose. The content of essential amino acids in SBT_LV protein was high. Overall, this study confirms that SBT_LVs hold promise as a valuable resource for use as a food ingredient, functional food, and dietary supplement for both humans and animals. Intensive urbanization from year to year reduces natural ecosystems that play a huge balancing ecological role on the planet. Preservation of natural ecosystems bordering on cultivated ones requires the development of new approaches to mutually beneficial sustainable development. Great potential lies in the preservation of unique ecosystems with wild fruit-bearing plantations. In this article, using the example of the natural ecosystems of the shores of Lake Issyk-Kul, included in the list of Ramsar Convention on the Conservation of Wetlands, the possibility of using natural thickets of sea buckthorn to improve the socio-economic situation of the local population and preserve unique but endangered natural ecosystems is analyzed. Studies have shown that sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) fruits do not accumulate heavy metals and contain an increased content of ascorbic acid. A survey of the local population showed that local residents do not consider the use of sea buckthorn plantations as a potential source of income, but recognize it as the most environmentally friendly. In order to develop the mutually beneficial development of the local population and natural ecosystems, it is necessary: to use wild-growing fruit-bearing shrubs with the maximum benefit from the annual harvest, among which the sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) has a potential; to develop recommendations and modern technologies for the production of a wide range of products, using all possible parts of sea buckthorn; educate local people on the importance of preserving natural ecosystems and involve local businessmen in preserving vulnerable ecosystems. Plant leaves are a source of essential phenolic compounds, which have numerous health benefits and can be used in multiple applications. While various techniques are available for recovering bioactive compounds from by-products, more data are needed on enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE). The aim of this study was to compare EAE and solid–liquid extraction (SLE), to evaluate the impact on bioactive compounds' extraction yield, phytochemical composition, and the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antidiabetic properties of Aralia cordata leaves and roots, sea buckthorn Hippophae rhamnoides, and hemp Cannabis sativa leaves. The results indicate that EAE with Viscozyme L enzyme (EAE_Visc) extracts of the tested plant leaves possess the highest yield, antioxidant activity, and total phenolic content. Moreover, the EAE_Visc extract increased by 40% the total sugar content compared to the control extract of A. cordata root. Interestingly, the sea buckthorn leaf extracts exhibited α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, which reached an almost 99% inhibition in all extracts. Furthermore, the sea buckthorn leaves SLE and EAE_Visc extracts possess antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy was used to examine changes in cell wall morphology after EAE. Overall, this study shows that EAE can be a promising method for increasing the yield and improving the functional properties of the resulting extracts in a fast and sustainable way compared to SLE. Simple Summary: High-density intensive farming easily induces immune stress in broilers, leading to significant impairment of growth performance and intestinal health. Sea-buckthorn flavone (SF), extracted from the fruits, leaves, and branches of sea buckthorn, exhibits anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, liver protective, and lipid metabolism-regulating properties. This study examined the effects of SF on growth performance, serum inflammation, the intestinal barrier, and the microbiota in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged broilers. Our findings demonstrate that SF alleviates LPS-induced inflammatory responses in broilers while improving intestinal health and enhancing growth performance. These findings serve as a valuable reference for poultry production. The experiment investigated the effects of sea-buckthorn flavonoids (SF) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged broilers. A total of 288 one-day-old male broilers were randomly assigned to 4 groups, with 6 replicates of 12 broilers each. The experiment lasted for 20 days. The diet included two levels of SF (0 or 1000 mg/kg) and broilers intraperitoneally injected with 500 μg/kg LPS on 16, 18, and 20 days, or an equal amount of saline. LPS challenge decreased final body weight, average daily gain, and average daily feed intake, increased feed-to-gain ratio, and elevated serum IL-1β, IL-2, TNF-α, D-LA, and endotoxin levels. Moreover, it resulted in a reduction in the IL-10 level. LPS impaired the intestinal morphology of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum, down-regulated the mRNA relative expression of Occludin, ZO-1, and MUC-2 in the jejunum mucosa, up-regulated the mRNA relative expression of TLR4, MyD88, NF-κB, and IL-1β, and increased the relative abundance of Erysipelatoclostridium in broilers (p < 0.05). However, SF supplementation mitigated the decrease in growth performance, reduced serum IL-1β, IL-2, and D-LA levels, increased IL-10 levels, alleviated intestinal morphological damage, up-regulated mRNA expression of Occludin and ZO-1, down-regulated the mRNA expression of TLR4, NF-κB, and IL-lβ in jejunum mucosal (p < 0.05), and SF supplementation presented a tendency to decrease the relative abundance of proteobacteria (0.05 < p < 0.1). Collectively, incorporating SF can enhance the growth performance, alleviate serum inflammation, and improve the intestinal health of broilers, effectively mitigating the damage triggered by LPS-challenges. Fructus hippophae (Hippophae rhamnoides spp. mongolica×Hippophae rhamnoides sinensis), a hybrid variety of sea buckthorn that Hippophae rhamnoides spp. mongolica serves as the female parent and Hippophae rhamnoidessinensis serves as the male parent, is a traditional plant with great potentials of economic and medical values. Herein, we gained a chromosome-level genome of Fructus hippophae about 918.59 Mb, with the scaffolds N50 reaching 83.65 Mb. Then, we anchored 440 contigs with 97.17% of the total genome sequences onto 12 pseudochromosomes. Next, de-novo, homology and transcriptome assembly strategies were adopted for gene structure prediction. This predicted 36475 protein-coding genes, of which 36226 genes could be functionally annotated. Simultaneously, various strategies were used for quality assessment, both the complete BUSCO value (98.80%) and the mapping rate indicated the high assembly quality. Repetitive elements, which occupied 63.68% of the genome, and 1483600 bp of non-coding RNA were annotated. Here, we provide genomic information on female plants of a popular variety, which can provide data for pan-genomic construction of sea buckthorn and for the resolution of the mechanism of sex differentiation. Background: Cyclophosphamide is a chemotherapeutic and immunosuppressive drug, however, its usage is constrained by the development of dose-dependent side effects, like hepatotoxicity and hemorrhagic cystitis. The proposed mechanism of these side effects is oxidative stress. This study focuses on the role of sea buckthorn seed oil, which is high in antioxidants, in reducing oxidative stress caused by cyclophosphamide. Objective: To ascertain how sea buckthorn berry seed oil affects the serum levels of antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation marker in BALB/c mice under oxidative stress brought on by cyclophosphamide. Study type, settings & duration: This quasi-experimental study was carried out at the Department of Physiology, Foundation University School of Health Sciences, Islamabad from February to April 2018. Methodology: It was a quasi-experimental animal study. Thirty healthy male BALB/c mice were divided into three groups of 10 each. Group-1 served as negative control, group-2 was positive control and received cyclophosphamide (25 mg/kg body weight) intraperitoneally for 10 consecutive days. Group-3 was coadministered cyclophosphamide (same dose and route) with sea buckthorn berry seed oil (40 mg/kg body weight) orally for ten days. All animals were sacrificed on the 11th day. Serum levels of antioxidant enzymes and malondialdehyde as stress biomarkers were assayed in all three groups. Results: Malondialdehyde levels rose while antioxidant enzyme levels, including glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase, fell in group-2 receiving cyclophosphamide (p <0.05). The deviation from the control group values was partially mitigated by the co-administration of sea buckthorn berry seed oil in group-3. Conclusion: In the cyclophosphamide-induced oxidative stress, co-administration of sea buckthorn berry seed oil reduced both the reduction in antioxidant enzymes and the rise in the lipid peroxidation marker malondialdehyde. Sea buckthorn and Japanese knotweed are known in many traditional medicine systems to be a great source of bioactive substances. This research aims to compare the bioactivity and protective effects of the phenolic extracts of leaves from sea buckthorn and roots and leaves from the Japanese knotweed on erythrocytes. The polyphenol composition of the extract was analyzed using UPLC-PDA-ESI-MS/MS. The extracts' toxicity and impact on the erythrocytes' osmotic fragility were measured spectrophotometrically. The antioxidant activity was determined based on the inhibition of oxidation of erythrocytes and their membrane induced by 2,2'-Azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH),measured spectrophotometrically and using fluorimetry. To find the possible mechanism of the extracts' action, extract-modified cells were observed under a microscope, and the potential localization of the extract's phytochemical composition was checked using fluorescent probes. The results showed that the used extracts are not toxic to erythrocytes, increase their osmotic resistance, and successfully protect them against free radicals. Extract components localize on the outer part of the membrane, where they can scavenge the free radicals from the environment. Altogether, the presented extracts can greatly protect living organisms against free radicals and can be used to support the treatment of diseases caused by excess free radicals. BACKGROUND: Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) was introduced into Canada in the early 2000s. This plant bears fruits with high commercial value in other countries due to its premium oil. Nevertheless, sea buckthorn berries are also a rich source of bioactives with nutraceutical potential, especially the variety grown in Newfoundland (Canada), which has not previously been characterized. As such, this study evaluated the composition of polyphenols in sea buckthorn pomace and seeds, as well as their prospective health‐promoting effects. RESULTS: Polyphenolic identification by high‐performance liquid chromatography–ultraviolet–mass spectrometry–time of flight revealed the presence of 24 compounds in the seeds and 16 compounds in the pomace, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, and tannins, with ellagic acid derivative IV (pomace, 52.13 μg g−1) and (+)‐catechin (seeds, 690.8 μg g−1) being the most dominant. Sea buckthorn extracts displayed in vitro antidiabetic and anti‐obesity potential by inhibiting α‐glucosidase (71.52–99.31%) and pancreatic lipase (15.80–35.61%) enzymes, respectively. The extracts also protected low‐density‐lipoprotein cholesterol (50.97–89.67%) and supercoiled DNA (35.11–79.84%) from oxidative damage. In this study, the effects of sea buckthorn oil (SBO), fish oil (FO) and an enzymatically synthesized structured lipid (SL) on serum, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and intestinal microbiota in Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats were investigated. The results demonstrated that FO, SBO, and SL effectively reduced the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the serum of SD rats. SBO increased serum triglyceride levels, while FO elevated total cholesterol levels. Furthermore, all three dietary lipids decreased short-chain fatty acid production and enhanced intestinal microbiota diversity. FO increased the abundance of intestinal microbiota including Romboutsia, Lactobacillus, Escherichia-Shigella, and Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group. Conversely, all three dietary lipids reduced the abundance of Klebsiella and Blautia. These findings provide a foundation for understanding the functionality of SBO and FO as well as their potential application in synthesizing novel SLs to regulate intestinal microbiota. This study investigated the chemical and volatile characteristics of sea buckthorn fruits from three different regions in China. The chemical composition of the volatile oil was determined by using a non-targeted gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method and the differences in chemical composition among the three producing areas were compared by heatmap providing a visual basis for researchers. A total of 93 compounds were identified, including 52 compounds from the Northeast China, 51 from the Xinjiang region, and 37 from Inner Mongolia region. Then, the in vitro antioxidant activity of sea buckthorn fruit oil was measured using DPPH, ABTS, and SOD inhibition tests, and the results showed that sea buckthorn fruit oil in northeast China was the strongest antioxidant, followed by Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang. The results of the CCK-8 experiment indicated that within the tested concentration, there is no cell cytotoxicity of the essential oil in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) cells. The need to improve the physicochemical properties of sea buckthorn juice and the bioavailability of carotenoids is a major challenge for the field. The effects of different natural emulsifiers, such as medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), tea saponins (TSs) and rhamnolipids (Rha), on the physical and chemical indexes of sea buckthorn juice were studied. The particle size of sea buckthorn juice and the carotenoids content were used as indicators for evaluation. The effects of different addition levels of MCT, Rha and TS on the bioavailability of carotenoids in sea buckthorn juice were investigated by simulating human in vitro digestion tests. The results showed that those emulsifiers, MCT, Rha and TS, can significantly reduce the particle size and particle size distribution of sea buckthorn juice, improve the color, increase the soluble solids content, turbidity and physical stability and protect the carotenoids from degradation. When the addition amount of Rha was 1.5%, the total carotenoids content (TCC) of sea buckthorn juice increased by 45.20%; when the addition amount of TS was 1.5%, the total carotenoids content (TCC) of sea buckthorn juice increased by 37.95%. Furthermore, the bioaccessibility of carotenoids was increased from 36.90 ± 2.57% to 54.23 ± 4.17% and 61.51 ± 4.65% through in vitro digestion by Rha and TS addition, respectively. However, the total carotenoids content (TCC) of sea buckthorn juice and bioaccessibility were not significantly different with the addition of MCT. In conclusion, the findings of this study demonstrate the potential of natural emulsifiers, such as MCT, Rha and TS, to significantly enhance the physicochemical properties and bioavailability of carotenoids in sea buckthorn juice, offering promising opportunities for the development of functional beverages with improved nutritional benefits. The unique ecological environment of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau has endowed Chinese sea buckthorn leaves with rich bioactivities. In this study, we investigated the bioactivity and stress resistance mechanisms of flavonoids derived from Chinese sea buckthorn leaves (FCL) native to the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. Our analysis identified a total of 57 flavonoids, mainly flavonol glycosides, from FCL, of which 6 were novel flavonoids. Isorhamnetin glycosides, quercetin glycosides and kaempferol glycosides were the three most dominant classes of compounds in FCL. In particular, isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside-7-O-rhamnoside emerged as the most abundant compound. Our results showed that FCL possesses potent antioxidant properties, as evidenced by its ability to effectively scavenge DPPH free radicals and demonstrate ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) levels comparable to Trolox, a well-known antioxidant standard. Furthermore, FCL showed remarkable efficacy in reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels while enhancing the activities of key antioxidant enzymes, namely superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), in Caenorhabditis elegans, a widely used model organism. Mechanistically, we elucidated that FCL exerts its stress resistance effects by modulating of transcription factors DAF-16 and HSF-1 within the insulin/insulin-like growth factor-1 signaling pathway (IIS). Activation of these transcription factors orchestrates the expression of downstream target genes including sod-3, ctl-1, hsp16.2, and hsp12.6, thus enhancing the organism's ability to cope with stressors. Overall, our study highlights the rich reservoir of flavonoids in Chinese sea buckthorn leaves as promising candidates for natural medicines, due to their robust antioxidant properties and ability to enhance stress resistance. Sea buckthorn berries (SBB) are well known for being rich in natural bioactive compounds with high pharmacological activity. In this study, the optimization of extraction parameters was performed to recover phenolic compounds with high antioxidant activity from SBB. This study involved a systematic optimization approach, including screening for a variety of parameters, including temperature, time, ethanol concentration, agitation, and solid loading. On the basis of Plackett–Burman design (PBD) model, the two most significant parameters (agitation and solid loading) were selected, and the correlation model between those parameters and multiple responses was derived via response surface methodology (RSM). As a result, the optimal extraction condition for maximizing phenolic content and antioxidant activity was determined to be agitation at 109.54 rpm and a solid loading of 172.67 g/L. Under optimal conditions, SBB extract showed a total phenolic content of 0.21 mg/mL and ABTS and DPPH activities of 27.27% and 58.16%, respectively. The SBB extract prepared under optimal conditions was found to contain caffeic acid, vanillic acid, rutin, and vitamin B1 (thiamine). This work is the first challenge to design an optimization model for the efficient recovery of antioxidants from SBB and is significant in that the model can be applied simply and economically to conventional extraction processes. Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides ssp. sinensis) is a deciduous shrub or small tree in the Elaeagnaceae family. It is dioecious, featuring distinct structures in female and male flowers. The MADS-box gene family plays a crucial role in flower development and differentiation of floral organs in plants. However, systematic information on the MADS-box family in sea buckthorn is currently lacking. This study presents a genome-wide survey and expression profile of the MADS-box family of sea buckthorn. We identified 92 MADS-box genes in the H. rhamnoides ssp. Sinensis genome. These genes are distributed across 12 chromosomes and classified into Type I (42 genes) and Type II (50 genes). Based on the FPKM values in the transcriptome data, the expression profiles of HrMADS genes in male and female flowers of sea buckthorn showed that most Type II genes had higher expression levels than Type I genes. This suggesting that Type II HrMADS may play a more significant role in sea buckthorn flower development. Using the phylogenetic relationship between sea buckthorn and Arabidopsis thaliana, the ABCDE model genes of sea buckthorn were identified and some ABCDE model-related genes were selected for qRT-PCR analysis in sea buckthorn flowers and floral organs. Four B-type genes may be involved in the identity determination of floral organs in male flowers, and D-type genes may be involved in pistil development. It is hypothesized that ABCDE model genes may play an important role in the identity of sea buckthorn floral organs. This study analyzed the role of MADS-box gene family in the development of flower organs in sea buckthorn, which provides an important theoretical basis for understanding the regulatory mechanism of sex differentiation in sea buckthorn. Each year, agro-foods produce thousands of tonnes of by-products that contain high-value, unique nutrients. The application of plant by-products enables agro-food corporations to obtain value from them and avoid using natural resources. The idea of the bio economy protects against environmental pollution and leads to a cheap source of bioactive components, which can be transformed into value-added products for other industries. The numerous publications on the positive impact of sea buckthorn (SBT, Hippophae rhamnoides L., Elaeagnaceae family) and its products on human health mainly concern its fruits and seeds. However, there are few data relating to the properties of SBT leaves. The leaves of SBT can be a rich source of nutrients and biologically active substances. In this investigation, we report the study of the leaves of four SBT cultivars. We determined their antioxidant capacities, measured total polyphenols and total flavonoids, and quantified their major polyphenols and alkaloids. The results show that SBT leaves are a source of antioxidants and alkaloids. Additionally, in this raw material, we identified the presence of individual flavonols (rutoside and quercetin), individual anthocyanidins (cyaniding, delphinidin, and peonidin), and chelerythrine by high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) for the first time. Through these types of studies, we aim to revalue this raw material, which is not well known in the world. Considering its nutritional properties, we seek to increase the use of its high-value, unique nutrients in food processing, medicine, and animal nutrition, in accordance with the goals of a closed-loop bioeconomy. Sea buckthorn juice has high nutritional value and a rich flavor that consumers enjoy. Traditional sea buckthorn thermal processing (TP) technology has problems such as low juice yield, poor quality, and poor flavor. Sea buckthorn berries are processed using a technique combining pulsed electric field (PEF) and high-pressure processing (HPP) to increase juice yield and study its impact on the quality and volatile aroma of sea buckthorn juice. Results have show that, compared with TP, under the condition of PEF-HPP, the juice yield of sea buckthorn significantly increased by 11.37% (p > 0.05); TP and PEF-HPP treatments could effectively kill microorganisms in sea buckthorn juice, but the quality of sea buckthorn juice decreased significantly after TP treatment (p > 0.05), whereas PEF-HPP coupling technology could maximally retain the nutrients of sea buckthorn juice while inhibiting enzymatic browning to improve color, viscosity, and particle size. The flavor of sea buckthorn juice is analyzed using electronic nose (E-nose) and gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometer (GC–IMS) techniques, and it has been shown that PEF-HPP retains more characteristic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of sea buckthorn while avoiding the acrid and pungent flavors produced by TP, such as benzaldehyde, (E)-2-heptenal, and pentanoic acid, among others, which improves the sensory quality of sea buckthorn juice. PEF-HPP technology is environmentally friendly and efficient, with significant economic benefits. Ladakh covers 80–85% of the total sea buckthorn area in India which grows wild and that too luxuriantly. It contributed to the traditional medicine system for ages without any true economic benefit. After decades of recognizing its immense value in the international market, researchers across the country have recently begun to explore its niches and exploit the crop in ways never seen before. The prominence of the crop is underscored by significant government projects and missions, highlighting its increasing importance. Multinational corporations worldwide view Ladakh as a potential source of inexpensive raw materials, though government regulations and policies currently limit accessibility. Commercial exploitation of the crop has recently commenced on a modest scale, yielding substantial profits for stakeholders. This experiment aimed to investigate the effect of sea buckthorn meal alone and in combination with bilberry leaves on growth performance, health status and intestinal microflora in broiler chickens. A total of 90 healthy 1-day-old Cobb 500 broilers were randomly divided into 3 treatment groups and housed in digestibility cages under controlled environmental conditions. The dietary treatments included a basal diet (T0), a basal diet +1% sea buckthorn meal (T1) and a basal diet + 1% sea buckthorn meal and bilberry leaves (T2). The results showed that experimental diets did not influenced the growth performance. At 42 d, T2 had the highest serum iron level among the three groups. Compared to T0, T1 and T2 significantly reduced Enterobacteriaceae, E.coli and staphylococci in the cecal and intestinal contents and improved the lactobacilli populations number. The most effective way to reduce the number of harmful bacteria in the cecal content was through the diet that contained sea buckthorn meal alone. In conclusion, adding sea buckthorn meal in the diet of broiler chickens can be an effective solution to promote a healthy gut microflora. The object of research is the quality indicators of sugar enriched with derivatives of the processing of the fruits of wild plants (viburnum, mountain ash, sea buckthorn, black elder) and potential dangerous factors that may arise during its production. This study is aimed at the analysis and assessment of all risks that arise in the production of sugar enriched with derivatives of processing of wild raw materials. For the production of enriched sugar, pre-cleaned fruits were frozen at a temperature of –18 ± 2 °С, and after defrosting, they were partially dehydrated by the method of osmotic dehydration. For this, a 70 % sugar solution with a temperature of 50 ± 5 °C was used (hydromodule 1). The duration of osmotic dehydration was 1 hour. The derivative product formed as a result of osmotic dehydration of fruits (sugar solution) was used to enrich granulated sugar in the amount of 10 % by mass of sugar. After thorough mixing with the solution, the sugar was dried in a laboratory vacuum dryer and analyzed. Based on the principles of HACCP, a detailed description of the product and its use with a specific purpose has been developed. In particular, the description of all stages of production, from the initial materials to the processing and packaging processes, as well as the definition of all possible dangerous factors that can affect the safety and quality of products. The identification and assessment of all hazar dous factors included the analysis of all possible threats to the safety and quality of products at each stage of production. To ensure the quality and safety of enriched sugar obtained from wild raw materials, an assessment of potential dangerous factors at all stages of production was carried out. A HACCP plan has been developed that allows effective management of critical control points and evaluation of the results of this management. This will allow potential manufacturers to produce safe and competitive products of high quality. Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) contains a variety of biologically active compounds, including flavonoids, terpenoids, polysaccharides, organic acids, volatile oils, and vitamins. It has been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of cardiovascular disorders. In this paper, we evaluated the pharmacological effects of sea buckthorn in cardiovascular diseases through preclinical studies, and revealed the mechanism of action of the active components in sea buckthorn in cardiovascular diseases, including anti-inflammatory, lipid oxidation regulation, antioxidant, vascular function modulation, anti-platelet aggregation, autophagy, intestinal microorganism regulation, and cell apoptosis reduction. In clinical trials, sea buckthorn was proven to be effective in managing lipid metabolism, blood pressure, and blood glucose levels in patients. We also extensively reviewed the safety of sea buckthorn medicine and its toxicity to numerous organs. To summarize, sea buckthorn has a beneficial effect on cardiovascular disease and may give a novel strategy for clinical intervention and therapy. This paper summarizes the phytochemistry, pharmacology, clinical applications, safety, and toxicity of sea buckthorn in order to better understand the mechanism of action of the various bioactive components in sea buckthorn, investigate its medicinal potential, and provide more options for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Bone tissue and breast tissue are interrelated, as demonstrated by breast microcalcifications, breast cancer bone metastases, bone morphogenetic proteins, and Wnt signaling. In addition, osteoblasts and osteoclasts represent an important switch of tumor cell dormancy during bone metastasis. Damage to both types of tissues mentioned above is highly prevalent, especially in postmenopausal women, and manifests itself in osteoporosis and breast cancer. Sea buckthorn (Elaeagnus rhamnoides L.), a botanical drug with high antioxidant, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and regenerative properties, has great therapeutic potential due to the unique composition of its bioactive metabolites. This review aimed to summarize the current knowledge from in vitro and in vivo studies on the effect of sea buckthorn, as well as its most widespread flavonoids isorhamnetin, quercetin, and kaempferol, on bone and breast tissue health. In vitro studies have revealed the beneficial impacts of sea buckthorn and aforementioned flavonoids on both bone health (bone remodeling, mineralization, and oxidative stress) and breast tissue health (cancer cell proliferation, apoptosis, tumor growth, and metastatic behavior). In vivo studies have documented their protective effects against disturbed bone microarchitecture and reduced bone strength in animal models of osteoporosis, as well as against tumor expansion and metastatic properties in animal xenograft models. In any case, further research and clinical trials are needed to carefully evaluate the potential therapeutic benefits of sea buckthorn and its flavonoids. Based on the available information, however, it can be concluded that these bioactive metabolites favorably affect both bone and breast tissue health.

Maternal obesity is a potential cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in the offspring. There is growing evidence that sea buckthorn plays an important role in protecting the liver. In this study, we established three dietary models of maternal to study the effects of different diets of maternal mice on the occurrence of NAFLD in their offspring and explored the underlying potential mechanisms. Studies have found that feeding sea buckthorn to maternal mice can improve liver steatosis and lipid deposition in the offspring. In addition, the expression of inflammation-related factors was reduced, the IκB/NF-κB pathway was inhibited, and inflammatory response was reduced in the offspring of maternal mice fed sea buckthorn. Furthermore, offspring exhibited increased antioxidant enzyme activity. Further, the results revealed that sea buckthorn inhibited glycolysis regulates AMPK/PKM2 activity, thereby reducing the occurrence of NAFLD. This study provides a novel strategy for treating NAFLD at the maternal level.

The aim of the research was to highlight the effects of sea buckthorn meal on production and consumption indices and meat chemistry in broiler chickens. The research was carried out on 50 Ross-308 hybrid broiler chickens in two groups (25 heads/group): a control group and an experimental group (0.5% buckthorn meal) over a period of 28 days. During and at the end of the experiment, the following parameters were recorded and analysed: body mass development, daily growth gain, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and meat quality. The best results were recorded in the experimental group, with a body weight of 2683.24 g, an average daily gain of 79.48 g and a feed conversion index of 1.70. Meat quality was improved by increasing crude protein content in the experimental group. The addition of sea buckthorn meal had a favourable influence on the productive performance and meat quality of broiler chickens.
