The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has had a profound impact on the mental health of people worldwide. This study examined dysfunctional coronavirus anxiety in nonpsychotic psychiatric outpatients during the pandemic using the coronavirus anxiety scale (CAS) and examined the relationship between coronavirus anxiety and clinical symptoms using network analysis.In this cross-sectional study, 192 patients who first visited the psychiatric outpatient clinic of Severance Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic with chief complaints of depressed mood, anxiety, somatic symptoms, or insomnia were included. We compared the clinical characteristics of patients with and without dysfunctional coronavirus anxiety. Network analysis was conducted to estimate the network of coronavirus anxiety and depressive, anxious, and hypochondriacal psychopathology.The results showed that 7.8% of patients exhibited dysfunctional coronavirus anxiety (CAS ≥ 5). Patients with dysfunctional coronavirus anxiety showed higher levels of health worry, somatic preoccupation, and subjective anxiety compared to patients without dysfunctional coronavirus anxiety. In the network analysis, the health worry node (Item 6 of the WI) showed the greatest number of connections with coronavirus anxiety nodes.These findings suggest that health worry may be an important bridge symptom that connects coronavirus anxiety and other clinical psychopathology. Patients with elevated health worries should be carefully monitored during the COVID-19 pandemic for exacerbation of previous symptoms and COVID-19-related psychopathology. Understanding the psychological factors in the face of the pandemic and their relationships with clinical psychiatric symptoms would help people prevent and overcome mental health problems during the pandemic.

OBJECTIVE A substantial proportion of patients with schizophrenia suffer from comorbid obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) possibly associated with antipsychotics. However, little is known about the comparative risks of the antipsychotics. The present study aimed to investigate the risk of new-onset OCD following the initiation of different antipsychotic medications for schizophrenia relative to haloperidol. METHODS Using the Korean national claims data, patients aged 15-60 years newly diagnosed with schizophrenia between 2010 and 2018 were identified. Of the 47,808 patients with schizophrenia treated with nine commonly prescribed antipsychotics, 775 new-onset OCD patients were matched to 3,100 patients without OCD using nested case-control design with 1:4 case-control matching based on the sex, age of index date, date of schizophrenia diagnosis, observation period, locations of medical institutions, and level of medical facilities. Using multivariable conditional logistic regression analysis, odd ratios (ORs) for new-onset OCD comparing each antipsychotic agent relative to haloperidol were computed. RESULTS The risk for new-onset OCD during treatment with clozapine was significantly higher than that with haloperidol (adjusted OR 2.86; 95% confidence interval [1.63-5.03]). The risks for new-onset OCD with other antipsychotics were not significantly different from that with haloperidol. In subgroup analysis, the early and intermediate, but not late-onset schizophrenia group showed significant risk for OCD associated with clozapine use. CONCLUSION The present findings, based on real-world national representative data, provide reliable evidence for the risk of new-onset OCD in patients with schizophrenia receiving clozapine at a population level.

Suicidality in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is underestimated and it is important for clinicians to understand the factors that contribute to suicidal ideation. The present study aimed to estimate a network of the core clinical symptoms of OCD including obsessions, compulsions, and obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptom dimensions, depressive symptoms, and psychological traits, and to examine which symptoms contribute to suicidal ideation in patients with a primary diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder.A total of 444 patients with OCD were assessed with the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale, and various other measures. Network analysis was conducted to estimate the network of obsessive-compulsive and depressive symptoms, psychological traits including alexithymia and impulsivity, and demographic covariates. Symptoms directly related to suicidal ideation in the network were examined for their relative contribution to suicidal ideation.Suicidal ideation was directly related to degree of control over compulsive behaviors, distress associated with compulsive behaviors, time spent performing compulsive behaviors, and unacceptable thoughts, along with depressive symptoms and alexithymia. In the network of OC and depressive symptoms the most central symptoms among the former were interference due to compulsive behaviors and interference due to obsessive thoughts, and among the latter were pessimistic thoughts and reported sadness.The findings suggest that along with depressive symptoms and alexithymia, compulsions and unacceptable thoughts dimension may contribute to suicidality, and thus, should be carefully monitored in patients with OCD.

Background The aim was to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health service use according to mental disorder diagnosis among psychiatric outpatients. Methods Psychiatric outpatient visits and patient diagnostic information were extracted from the EHR(electronic health records) of a Korean tertiary hospital during 3 months of the COVID-19 pandemic and 3 months before the COVID-19 outbreak. Visit rates of psychiatric outpatients according to primary psychiatric diagnosis category before and after the COVID-19 pandemic were compared using an over-dispersed Poisson regression model. The temporal associations between the number of daily outpatient visits and the daily number of newly confirmed cases were examined by time-series analysis within each diagnosis category. Results Total daily outpatient visit rate was significantly reduced during the pandemic. Among the nine most prevalent diagnosis categories, the daily visit rates for anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, and schizophrenia-spectrum disorders were significantly reduced by about 29.8%, 14.8%, and 13.3% respectively. Time-series analysis showed significant temporal correlations between the daily number of newly confirmed cases and the daily visit rates for anxiety disorders and depressive disorders, whereas patients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders showed no significant temporal association. Limitations Potential confounding factors unrelated to the pandemic might have influenced the results. Conclusions The present findings suggest that patients with anxiety or depressive disorders may have concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19, and may be more reluctant to visit psychiatry outpatient clinics. Delivery strategies for mental healthcare services, such as telepsychiatry, would be helpful to enhance continuity of care during the pandemic.

Background: The present study examined whether mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) and telomere length — key markers of cellular aging — were altered in male and female participants with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) compared to healthy controls. We also tested for associations between these alterations and OCD-related clinical features and inflammatory index. Methods: A total of 235 patients with OCD (38.7% female) and 234 healthy controls (41.5% female) were included. We quantified whole-blood mtDNAcn and leukocyte telomere length using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We also calculated the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio from complete blood cell counts. Results: Multivariate analysis of covariance showed that OCD status had a significant overall effect on cellular aging markers in men (Wilks λ = 0.889, F2,275 = 17.13, p < 0.001) and women (Wilks λ = 0.742, F2,182 = 31.61, p < 0.001) after controlling for age, body mass index and childhood trauma. In post-hoc comparisons, men with OCD had lower mtDNAcn than controls (p < 0.001), but we found no between-group difference for telomere length (p = 0.55). Women with OCD had a significantly lower mtDNAcn (p < 0.001) and shortened telomere length (p = 0.023) compared to controls. Moreover, the lower mtDNAcn shown in the OCD group was significantly correlated with an increase in systemic inflammation for both sexes, as measured by neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio. Limitations: The present cross-sectional design did not allow us to infer a causal relationship between OCD disease status and cellular aging markers. Conclusion: The present study is, to our knowledge, the first to demonstrate alterations in mtDNAcn and telomere shortening in OCD. These results suggest that aging-associated molecular mechanisms may be important in the pathophysiology of OCD.

BACKGROUND Many mood disorder patients experience seasonal changes in varying degrees. Studies on seasonality have shown that bipolar disorder has a higher prevalence rate in such patients; however, there is limited research on seasonality in early-onset mood disorder patients. This study estimated the prevalence of seasonality in early-onset mood disorder patients, and examined the association between seasonality and mood disorders. METHODS Early-onset mood disorder patients (n = 378; 138 major depressive disorder; 101 bipolar I disorder; 139 bipolar II disorder) of the Mood Disorder Cohort Research Consortium and healthy control subjects (n = 235) were assessed for seasonality with Seasonality Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ). RESULTS A higher global seasonality score, an overall seasonal impairment score, and the prevalence of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and subsyndromal SAD showed that mood disorder subjects had higher seasonality than the healthy subjects. We compared the efficacy and safety of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) vs. Sertraline in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in South Korean participants. This was a multi-center, double blind, active controlled study with non-inferiority testing. Patients were randomly assigned to receive tDCS (n = 45) or Sertraline (n = 47). tDCS was administered in 30-min, 2 mA prefrontal stimulation sessions for 10 consecutive weekdays, followed by 2 treatments at 4 and 6 weeks. Sertraline was administered at a dose of 50 mg per day for 6 weeks. The primary outcome measure was a change in the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) score at six weeks. Mean MADRS scores decreased by 14.58 ± 8.51 points in the tDCS group and 12.32 ± 8.56 points in the Sertraline group. There was no significant main effect of group (p = 0.5877) or time by group interaction across weeks 0, 3, and 6 (p = 0.1539). Noninferiority of tDCS compared with Sertraline was not demonstrated. The mean difference between the Sertraline and tDCS group was −2.258 (95% confidence interval [CI], −5.795 to 1.27811), and the lower boundary of the CI was lower than the prespecified noninferiority margin of −3.56. There were no significant group differences in the rate of adverse events. In the present study, the noninferiority of tDCS to Sertraline for the treatment of depression was not found in this Korean population.

A new species of chionelasmatid sessile vent barnacle, Eochionelasmus coreana sp. nov., is described and illustrated on the basis of specimens collected from the Solitaire hydrothermal vent field in the Central Indian Ridge of the Indian Ocean. This new species is morphologically very similar to E. ohtai, the type species of the genus Eochionelasmus. However, it differs from E. ohtai in its distribution, the status of the notch on the maxillule, and the positions of rl1 and cl1 on whorls of the imbricating plates. In addition, a molecular phylogenetic tree indicated that the chionelasmatid Eochionelasmus was closely related to the waikalasmatid Waikalasma with high supporting values rather than the other chionelasmatid Chionelasmus. The new species is not only the first record of a sessile vent barnacle from outside of the Pacific Ocean, but is also the first sessile barnacle from the Indian Ocean.

Background Mood disorders require consistent management of symptoms to prevent recurrences of mood episodes. Circadian rhythm (CR) disruption is a key symptom of mood disorders to be proactively managed to prevent mood episode recurrences. This study aims to predict impending mood episodes recurrences using digital phenotypes related to CR obtained from wearable devices and smartphones. Methods The study is a multicenter, nationwide, prospective, observational study with major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder I, and bipolar II disorder. A total of 495 patients were recruited from eight hospitals in South Korea. Patients were followed up for an average of 279.7 days (a total sample of 75 506 days) with wearable devices and smartphones and with clinical interviews conducted every 3 months. Algorithms predicting impending mood episodes were developed with machine learning. Algorithm-predicted mood episodes were then compared to those identified through face-to-face clinical interviews incorporating ecological momentary assessments of daily mood and energy. Results Two hundred seventy mood episodes recurred in 135 subjects during the follow-up period. The prediction accuracies for impending major depressive episodes, manic episodes, and hypomanic episodes for the next 3 days were 90.1, 92.6, and 93.0%, with the area under the curve values of 0.937, 0.957, and 0.963, respectively. Conclusions We predicted the onset of mood episode recurrences exclusively using digital phenotypes. Specifically, phenotypes indicating CR misalignment contributed the most to the prediction of episodes recurrences. Our findings suggest that monitoring of CR using digital devices can be useful in preventing and treating mood disorders.

Real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), a primary approach for evaluating gene expression, requires an appropriate normalization strategy to confirm relative gene expression levels by comparison, and rule out variations that might occur in analytical procedures. The best option is to use a reference gene whose expression level is stable across various experimental conditions to compare the mRNA levels of a target gene. However, there is limited information on how the reference gene is differentially expressed at different ages (growth) in small invertebrates with notable changes such as molting. In this study, expression profiles of nine candidate reference genes from the brackish water flea, Diaphanosoma celebensis, were evaluated under diverse exposure to toxicants and according to growth. As a result, four different algorithms showed similar stabilities of genes for chemical exposures in the case of limited conditions using the same developmental stage (H2A was stable, whereas Act was fairly unstable in adults), while the results according to age showed a significantly different pattern in suite of candidate reference genes. This affected the results of genes EcRA and GST, which are involved in development and detoxification mechanisms, respectively. Our finding is the first step towards establishing a standardized real-time qRT-PCR analysis of this environmentally important invertebrate that has potential for aquatic ecotoxicology, particularly in estuarine environments.

The FKBP5 gene is known to have an important role in alcohol use disorder (AUD) in response to stress and has been reported to affect stress responses by interacting with childhood trauma. This study investigated the effects of the FKBP5 polymorphism rs1360780 and childhood trauma on trait resilience in male patients with AUD. In addition, allele-specific associations between FKBP5 DNA methylation and resilience were examined. In total, 297 men with AUD were assessed for alcohol use severity, childhood trauma, resilience, and impulsivity. Genotyping for FKBP5 rs1360780 and DNA methylation were analyzed. The effects of the rs1360780 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and clinical variables on resilience were tested using linear regression analysis. Possible associations between FKBP5 DNA methylation and resilience were tested with partial correlation analysis. The rs1360780 risk allele, a low education level, and high impulsivity were associated with diminished resilience, whereas no significant main or interaction effect of childhood trauma with the SNP rs1360780 genotype on resilience was shown. No significant association between FKBP5 DNA methylation and resilience was found. The present study demonstrated the involvement of the rs1360780 risk allele in trait resilience in men with AUD, suggesting that the genetic vulnerability of FKBP5 may influence resilience related to AUD.

This study examined whether the use of SRIs is associated with an increased risk of bone loss using a nested case–control design with a nationwide population–based cohort in Korea. Using the Korean National Health Screening Cohort, subjects newly diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia (n = 55,799) were matched with controls (n = 278,995) at a ratio of 1:5. We stratified the participants by their time-dependent use of SRIs and sex and controlled for various confounders, including lifestyle habits, laboratory data, and comorbidities. Conditional logistic regression showed that both recent and former users of SRIs had an increased risk of subsequent bone loss compared with non-users: men [recent users: odds ratio (OR) 1.35, 95% confidential interval (CI) 1.20, 1.53; former-users: OR 1.10, 95% CI 1.01, 1.20]; women (recent users: OR 1.38, 95% CI 1.28–1.48; former-users: OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.02, 1.21). The use of SRIs was associated with an increased risk of bone loss in both men and women. In particular, the association was stronger in recent users. These findings provide population-level evidence for the risk of bone loss associated with SRI exposure and highlight the importance of monitoring the bone health of SRI users.

Since deep-sea hydrothermal vents have been targeted for mining mineral resources, concerns about the potential impacts of mining on vent ecosystems have gradually increased. The vent alvinocaridid shrimp is one of the dominant endemic vent organisms. We collected an experimental species, Nautilocaris saintlaurentae, from the Tonga Arc in the Southwest Pacific Ocean, and firstly determined the sequences of seven housekeeping genes (HKGs) and three stress-related genes in this study. The stability of the HKGs was evaluated and the expression levels of targeted genes were measured in different body parts, the cephalothorax, abdomen, and whole body, to provide information on which parts of nonmodel species can be used for ecotoxicological studies. Based on geNorm platform, multiple combinations of HKGs were tested. The stability of the HKG expression in each body part indicated that the cephalothorax can be used alone and also demonstrated that using at least three HKGs provides suitable interpretations for mRNA real-time quantitative PCR arrays in N. saintlaurentae. Although analysis of specific body part subdivisions was not carried out, our results suggested that anatomical characteristics should be considered when investigating biological functions at a molecular level. Finally, this study revealed upregulation of stress-responsive genes in the cephalothorax of N. saintlaurentae with environmental changes.

Dopamine is a major neuromodulator that is acutely involved in various cognitive processes, reward-motivated behaviors, and impulsivity. Abnormality in dopaminergic neurotransmission is implicated in the pathophysiology of alcohol use disorder (AUD). The present study examined the genetic influence of dopamine system on problematic drinking, impulsivity, and aggressiveness in a Korean male population with AUD. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs4532 in DRD1, rs2283265 in DRD2, rs6280 in DRD3, rs1800497 in ANKK1, and rs4680 in COMT) and a variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs) in DAT1 in 295 male patients with AUD were genotyped. Background Deficits in cortical inhibitory processes have been suggested as underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD). We examined whether patients with OCD have altered cortical excitability using paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). We also tested associations between TMS indices and OCD-related characteristics, including age of onset and response inhibition in the go/no-go paradigm, to examine whether altered cortical excitability contributes to symptom formation and behavioural inhibition deficit in patients with OCD. Methods We assessed motor cortex excitability using paired-pulse TMS in 51 patients with OCD and 39 age-matched healthy controls. We also assessed clinical symptoms and response inhibition in the go/nogo task. All patients were undergoing treatment with serotonin reuptake inhibitors. We performed repeated-measures multivariate analysis of covariance to compare TMS indices between patients with OCD and controls. Results Compared to controls, patients with OCD showed a shorter cortical silent period and decreased intracortical facilitation. However, we found no significant difference between groups for resting motor threshold or short-interval intracortical inhibition. In the OCD group, the shortened cortical silent period was associated with a prompt reaction time in the go/no-go task and with early onset of OCD. Limitations We could not exclude the influence of medications on motor cortex excitability. Conclusion These findings suggest abnormal cortical excitability in patients with OCD. The associations between cortical silent period and response inhibition and age of onset further indicate that altered cortical excitability may play an important role in the development of OCD.

Background FK506-binding protein 5 (FKBP5) binds to glucocorticoid receptors and modulates glucocorticoid sensitivity. The FKBP5 gene has been implicated in the dysregulation of human stress responses, contributing to the risk and treatment response of stress-related disorders. The present study examined whether epigenetic changes in FKBP5 are associated with chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) status in the context of FKBP5 genetic variation (rs1360780 polymorphism) among male veterans exposed to combat trauma. Methods Korean male veterans who served on active duty during the Vietnam War were categorized into 2 groups: with PTSD (n = 123) and without PTSD (n = 116). The genotype of FKBP5 rs1360780 and DNA methylation levels of two CpG sites at the FKBP5 intron 7 region were assessed in peripheral blood. Analysis of covariance was performed to examine main and interaction effects of PTSD status and FKBP5 genotype on FKBP5 DNA methylation level, with age, trauma levels, and alcohol use as covariates. Results A significant main effect of FKBP5 rs1360780 and PTSD and an interaction effect between genotype and PTSD status were found on mean FKBP5 DNA methylation level. The T allele of rs1360780 was associated with lower FKBP5 methylation level. In addition, the PTSD group showed significantly higher methylation than did the non-PTSD group among veterans carrying the risk T allele (n = 96), while no group difference was observed on methylation levels among veterans with the CC genotype (n = 143). Among veterans carrying the T allele, FKBP5 methylation levels were positively correlated with the severity of PTSD symptoms. Conclusions The present study demonstrated different FKBP5 methylation levels in PTSD depending on FKBP5 genetic variation among veterans exposed to combat trauma. The present finding suggests that the genetic and epigenetic modulation of FKBP5 is involved in the pathophysiology of PTSD. Further longitudinal research involving people exposed to trauma is required to understand causal relationships of FKBP5 in the development and recovery of PTSD.

Negative symptoms are recognized as a fundamental feature of schizophrenia throughout the disease course. Epigenetic alterations in the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) may be a key mechanism involved in social-emotional disturbances of schizophrenia. Here, we investigated OXTR methylation and its association with clinical and brain network connectivity phenotypes of negative symptoms, particularly anhedonia-asociality, in individuals with recent-onset schizophrenia (ROS) and at ultrahigh risk (UHR) for psychosis. Sixty-four ROS (39 women), 46 UHR (19 women), and 98 healthy individuals (52 women) participated in this study. OXTR methylation was quantified using the pyrosequencing method. A subset of participants (16 ROS, 23 UHR, and 33 healthy controls [HCs]) underwent a 5.5-minute resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to determine the relationship between OXTR methylation and the striatal-amygdala network functional connectivity (FC) underlying anhedonia-asociality. Both men and women with ROS and UHR showed significantly decreased OXTR methylation compared to HCs. In women with ROS and UHR, decreased OXTR methylation showed a significant correlation with increased anhedonia-asociality. FC of the striatal-amygdala network, positively associated with the severity of anhedonia-asociality, showed an inverse correlation with OXTR methylation. This study suggests that epigenetic alterations of OXTR, which can be detected before the development of full-blown psychosis, confer susceptibility to schizophrenia and play a crucial role in the manifestation of anhedonia-asociality, particularly in women.

Aims Recent evidence suggests that the opioid system is implicated in the pathophysiology of alcohol use disorder (AUD). We aimed to examine the genetic influence of opioid receptors on susceptibility to AUD and its clinical and psychological characteristics including harmful drinking behavior and various aspects of impulsivity in AUD patients. Methods Three μ‐opioid receptor gene (OPRM1) variants and two κ‐opioid receptor gene (OPRK1) variants were examined in 314 male patients with AUD and 324 male controls. We applied the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale (OCDS), and Alcohol Dependence Scale. AUD patients also completed the stop‐signal task, delay discounting task, balloon analogue risk task, and the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale version 11 (BIS‐11). Results No significant differences in genotype distributions or haplotype frequencies were found between AUD patients and controls. However, OPRK1 SNP rs6473797 was significantly related to the severity of alcohol‐related symptoms as measured by AUDIT and OCDS and a haplotype containing rs6473797 was also related to OCDS scores in AUD patients. For other psychological traits, OPRM1 SNP rs495491 was significantly associated with scores on the motor subfactor of the BIS‐11. Conclusion Genetic variations in opioid receptors may contribute to symptom severity and impulsivity in AUD patients.

Objective Ubiquitin-specific peptidase 46 gene (USP46) polymorphisms is part of ubiquitin-proteasome system, which is responsible for dynamic cellular processes such as the regulation of cell cycle. USP46 has been reported to be associated with major depressive disorder. The objective of the present study was to investigate the association of USP46 polymorphisms with affective temperamental traits in healthy subjects. Methods A total of 557 Korean healthy volunteers were recruited, and 545 subjects (328 male, 217 female) were included in the final analysis. The DNA of the subjects was isolated from saliva samples. Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs346005, rs2244291 in USP46 were genotyped. Affective temperaments were assessed using the Korean version of Temperament Evaluation of the Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A). Results A significant association was found between rs346005 genotypes and TEMPS-A only in male subjects. In particular, subjects with the CC genotype of rs346005 showed a more depressive temperament than subjects with AA or CA genotypes in males. For rs2244291, there were no associations between the rs2244291 genotypes and TEMPS-A scores. Conclusion Some affective temperaments may serve as a genetic predisposing factors for affective disorders, such as depressive disorder, via vulnerability genes related to the ubiquitin-proteasome system.

Balanomorph Eochionelasmus species are hydrothermal vent endemic barnacles. In the genus Eochionelasmus, three species are known to date and they distribute at three different vent fields in Pacific and Indian Oceans, E. ohtai in the Southwest Pacific Ocean, E. paquensis in the East Pacific Ocean, and E. coreana in the Indian Ocean. Therefore, Eochionelasmus species are considered to be a meaningful model taxon to elucidate the evolutionary history of vent organism in relation to geotectonic events. Here, we characterized the partial mitogenome of a newly described vent barnacle Eochionelasmus coreana Chan et al., 2020 from the Solitaire vent field in the Indian Ocean. The length of mitogenome was 16,804 bp with 64.0% AT content. Its gene content and organization was identical to those of E. ohtai. There was one significant part in the mitogenome of E. coreana, which was a long intergenic region over 2 kb found between tRNAPro and tRNAThr. The phylogenetic tree suggested the monophyly of E. ohtai and E. coreana with high supporting values. In the future, additional mitogenome analysis of the last Eochionelasmus species, E. paquensis, could expand our understanding about the speciation and global distribution of Eochionelasmus species.

Scalpellids are one of the largest families of Scalpelliformes and reproduce either androdioeciously or dioeciously. Here, we characterized the first mitogenome of a scalpellid barnacle (Arcoscalpellum epeeum), which was 15,593 bp in length with a 71.5% AT content. In comparison with the pollicipedids Capitulum mitella and Pollicipes polymerus, the tRNA genes of A. epeeum were rearranged between ND3 and ND5, between CYTB and ND1, and between 12S rRNA and ND2. On the mitogenomic tree, the Scalpelliformes families Pollicipedidae and Scalpellidae were not monophyletic, which concurs with previous studies.

The family Catophragmidae is one of the lower balanomorphs from traditional and recent multiple mitochondrial and nuclear markers molecular analysis. Here, we characterized the first mitogenome of the catophragmid barnacle Catomerus polymerus, which was 15,446 bp in length with a 68.3% AT content. The mitogenome had the typical pancrustacean gene arrangement, which was identical to the mitogenome configurations of the chthamalid Octomeris sp. and pachylasmatoid Eochionelasmus ohtai. On the mitogenomic tree, the catophragmid Catomerus polymerus formed an independent branch that was basal to the members of the superfamilies Tetraclitoidea and Balanoidea, which was inconsistent with previous findings.

The hitherto suborder Verrucomorpha contains asymmetrical barnacles of two groups: the true Verrucomorpha (Eoverruca + Verrucidae) and the Neoverrucidae. Here, we determined the mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Altiverruca navicula, a true Verrucomorpha species. The mitogenome was 15,976 base pairs in length and had the typical pancrustacean gene arrangement. Its protein-coding genes were very similar to those of other thoracican species in terms of length, AT content, and start and stop codons. In phylogenetic trees constructed with 13 protein-coding genes, A. navicula was positioned at an ancestral node of sessile barnacles, consistent with the findings of previous studies.

The family Eolepadidae is the only stalked barnacle in hydrothermal vent regions. Here, we determined the mitogenome of the eolepadid Vulcanolepas fijiensis. The mitogenome was 17,374 bp long, with 76.6% AT content. Its protein-coding gene organization was identical to that of the deep-sea scalpellid Arcoscalpellum epeeum. On the mitogenomic tree, two scalpellomorphan families (Eolepadidae and Scalpellidae) were monophyletic while the other scalpellomorphan family Pollicipedidae did not form the monophyletic group with them. Further mitogenomic analysis of undetermined taxa in hydrothermal vents is required to deepen our understanding of their phylogenetic relationships.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a debilitating and often refractory psychiatric disorder. Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound is a novel, minimally invasive neuromodulatory technique that has shown promise in treating this condition. We investigated the relationship between lesion location and long-term outcome in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder treated with focused ultrasound to discern the optimal lesion location and elucidate the efficacious network underlying symptom alleviation. Postoperative images of 11 patients who underwent focused ultrasound capsulotomy were used to correlate lesion characteristics with symptom improvement at 1-year follow-up. Normative resting-state functional MRI and normative diffusion MRI-based tractography analyses were used to determine the networks associated with successful lesions. Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder treated with inferior thalamic peduncle deep brain stimulation (n = 5) and lesions from the literature implicated in obsessive-compulsive disorder (n = 18) were used for external validation. Successful long-term relief of obsessive-compulsive disorder was associated with lesions that included a specific area in the dorsal anterior limb of the internal capsule. Normative resting-state functional MRI analysis showed that lesion engagement of areas 24 and 46 was significantly associated with clinical outcomes (R = 0.79, P = 0.004). The key role of areas 24 and 46 was confirmed by (i) normative diffusion MRI-based tractography analysis, showing that streamlines associated with better outcome projected to these areas; (ii) association of these areas with outcomes in patients receiving inferior thalamic peduncle deep brain stimulation (R = 0.83, P = 0.003); and (iii) the connectedness of these areas to obsessive-compulsive disorder-causing lesions, as identified using literature-based lesion network mapping. These results provide considerations for target improvement, outlining the specific area of the internal capsule critical for successful magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound outcome and demonstrating that discrete frontal areas are involved in symptom relief. This could help refine focused ultrasound treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder and provide a network-based rationale for potential alternative targets.

Imbricaverruca and Neoverruca are two genera of hydrothermal vent asymmetrical barnacles in Neoverrucidae, but found in vents of the Southwest Pacific and Northwest Pacific Oceans, respectively. Imbricaverruca has a flattened operculum and the shell base with multiple whorls of imbricating plates, while Neoverruca has an inclined operculum and the shell base with fewer developed imbricating plates. It has been hypothesized that Imbricaverruca has apomorphic shell characters in Neoverrucidae. Although the monophyletic relationship of the vent barnacle members in the superfamily Neolepadoidea were confirmed based on molecular phylogeny, the relationships between Neobrachylepadidae and Neoverrucidae, and between Neoverruca and Imbricaverruca have not been determined because there are no molecular data on Imbricaverruca. In this study, we sequenced three nuclear (18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, histone 3) and one mitochondrial (CO1) genes of I. yamaguchii from the Southwest Pacific. Our phylogenetic results showed that Neobrahchylepadidae is the sister taxon to Neoverrucidae (Imbricaverruca + Neoverruca), and Imbricaverruca and Neoverruca are monophyletic sister taxa each other, which not supporting the previous hypothesis that Neoverruca is sister to the clade containing Neobrahchylepadidae and Neolepadidae. These implied that the differences in shell forms between Neoverruca and Imbricaverruca are a result of independent divergent evolution in different deep-sea basins.

Host–symbiont relationships in hydrothermal vent ecosystems, supported by chemoautotrophic bacteria as primary producers, have been extensively studied. However, the process by which densely populated co‐occurring invertebrate hosts form symbiotic relationships with bacterial symbionts remains unclear. Here, we analyzed gill‐associated symbiotic bacteria (gill symbionts) of five co‐occurring hosts, three mollusks (“Bathymodiolus” manusensis, B. brevior, and Alviniconcha strummeri) and two crustaceans (Rimicaris variabilis and Austinograea alayseae), collected together at a single vent site in the Tonga Arc. We observed both different compositions of gill symbionts and the presence of unshared operational taxonomic units (OTUs). In addition, the total number of OTUs was greater for crustacean hosts than for mollusks. The phylogenetic relationship trees of gill symbionts suggest that γ‐proteobacterial gill symbionts have coevolved with their hosts toward reinforcement of host specificity, while campylobacterial Sulfurovum species found across various hosts and habitats are opportunistic associates. Our results confirm that gill symbiont communities differ among co‐occurring vent invertebrates and indicate that hosts are closely related with their gill symbiont communities. Considering the given resources available at a single site, differentiation of gill symbionts seems to be a useful strategy for obtaining nutrition and energy while avoiding competition among both hosts and gill symbionts., This study is the first comparison of gill symbiont communities of co‐occurring invertebrates living at a single hydrothermal vent site.
