Background and Aim: Male fertility is essential to bovine reproduction, particularly when bulls are used for artificial insemination or single-sire breeding. Bull breeding and soundness examinations (BBSE) are routinely undertaken to identify potentially unfit bulls for breeding. Multiple criteria, including physical examination and determination of testicular and semen parameters, characterize BBSE. Knowledge interstices within this realm, especially in tropical African settings, necessitate pragmatic approaches to address the same. This study aimed to investigate the potential effects of bull parameters on testicular attributes in a tropical setting. Materials and Methods: The present study recruited healthy bulls (n = 96) aged >16 months with active semen collection used for artificial insemination at the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Center. The breed breakdown was as follows: Ayrshire (n = 40), Boran (n = 3), Friesian (n = 36), Guernsey (n = 5), Jersey (n = 7), and Sahiwal (n = 5). Age, breed, body weight, scrotal circumference (SC), and testicular echotexture were collected, and the findings were analyzed using R statistical software. Results: SC increased with age and body weight (p < 0.0001). SC varied from one breed to the others (p < 0.0001). Furthermore, as determined using trans-scrotal ultrasonography, hyperechoic testicular lesions were present in 30.21% of the bulls imaged, and the incidence was significantly related to age (p < 0.001). Conclusion: SC is significantly affected by age and body weight. The mean SC was higher in the Bos indicus, but this finding is only indicative because the Sahiwal and Boran sample sizes were small. Notably, the prevalence of hyperechoic testicular foci following trans-scrotal ultrasonography was common in older bulls. However, there is a need to further elucidate this phenomenon’s pathophysiology with age as the etiology and possible sequelae of semen quality.

Breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) is the best methodology to estimate the fertility potential of future bulls and performing indirect selection for their fertility. However, the outcome of the BSE is influenced by several factors, including genetics, environment, and BSE guidelines. Herein, in this retrospective study, our first aim was to characterize the reasons for failure in 46,566 BSE from 2-year-old beef Bos indicus bulls (Nellore) born from 1997 to 2018. Our second aim was to determine whether or not BSE was associated with reproductive potential improvement of the bulls over the years. Due to changes in the BSE criteria, we used the same dataset, but only bulls born from 2002 to 2018 were included resulting in 35,856 BSE. For the second aim, the effect of the year and farm were included in the model of the multivariate logistic regression. We also determined if the main reasons for BSE failure decreased over time. Bulls were classified as approved (satisfactory potential breeders and qualified for natural breeding service) and not approved (deferred and unsatisfactory potential breeders). The reasons for BSE failure in Nellore bulls were poor semen quality (53.1 %) and physical defects (46.9 %), with the main physical defect being testis abnormalities (19.7 %). The overall percentage of bulls approved each year was 87.1 %, with no improvement over the years of study. However, the percentage of approved bulls at the first BSE increased over the years (P < 0.05). This increase was evident by a reduction in the difference between the overall percentage of the bulls approved vs the percentage of bulls approved at the first BSE. Furthermore, there was an increase in the percentage of bulls classified as satisfactory potential breeders in the BSE and an evident decrease in the percentage of bulls qualified only for natural breeding service (P < 0.05). In addition, an increase of the scrotal circumference (SC) of the herd was found (P < 0.05). These results indicate the overall quality of the bulls improved over the years. To associate and identify the main sperm abnormalities, 3461 not approved bulls were clustered. The most frequent defects were strongly coiled tail spermatozoa, proximal droplets, and acrosomal defects. Overall, there was no change in the frequency of bulls not approved by the sperm morphology nor the frequency of the main sperm abnormalities over the years. Nevertheless, the frequency of the defects remained very low, implying they were controlled. Additionally, abnormalities in the testis decreased over the years and was associated with the increase in the SC of the herd and a decrease of culled bulls due to low SC. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that there is an association between implementation and use of BSE with improvements in the reproductive quality of future generation bulls. • Records of 20 years and 46,566 BSE from a seedstock herd in Brazil were investigated. • About 14 % of the bulls fail to be approved in the BSE at two years of age. • Semen quality (53 %) & physical defects (47 %) were the most common causes of failure. • Testicular abnormalities decreased, & scrotal circumference increased over the years. • BSE was associated with increased percentage of bulls approved at first BSE over years. Scrotal circumference (SC) is the main indicator of sperm production potential, this dimension is used to increase the reproductive capacity of bulls. SC can be used as a criterion for fertility selection in cattle farms. The objective of the research is to review the importance of reproductive evaluation of the bull and the correlation of scrotal circumference with semen quality. A bibliographic review was carried out to demonstrate the main advantages of testicular size and weight in young bulls since it is highly correlated with scrotal circumference, which is the main indicator of sperm production potential. It was concluded that selecting young bulls with a good scrotal circumference has benefits, since they produce more semen of higher quality compared to bulls of the same age, but with smaller testicles. Dimensions of linear type traits facilitate selection of livestock for breeding and rearing. To date, use of linear type traits for selection of breeding bulls is highly concentric to scrotal circumference (SC), with probable overlook to other important traits. Present study reported the importance of various gonadal linear type traits on spermatozoa production, age‐related changes in gonadal linear type traits of bulls and predictive ability of these traits on bulls' reproductive potentials. Among all gonadal traits, testicular density (TD), scrotal volume (SV), paired testicular weight (PWT) and SC were found most important predictor variables in order, which can discriminate between good/poor breeding bulls, that is, produced frozen semen doses (FSD) or not. Dimensions of gonadal traits increased significantly up to 36 months age and thereafter, development became slow and negligible. In contrast, TD decreased by 30%, 51%, 64%, 68% and 71% at 12, 24, 36, 48 and >49 months age, respectively, from its base value at 6 months. Bulls of lower TD (≤0.88 g/cm3) had significantly higher ejaculate volume (+9%), sperm motility, sperm concentration (+100 million/mL) and sperm output (+26%)/ejaculate as compared to bulls of higher TD (>0.88 g/cm3). Discriminant function was developed using TD, SV, PWT and SC to identify bulls of superior reproductive potentials. It was concluded that among the investigated traits, TD was the strongest to discriminate between FSD and Non‐FSD bulls. Therefore, our findings suggested that TD could be more potential trait than SC for dairy bulls' breeding soundness evaluation and assessment of reproductive ability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between testicular biometry and body weight, as well as semen parameters (ejaculate volume and total sperm concentration/ejaculate) in Sirohi and Jamnapari bucks. A total of six bucks (2 Sirohi and 4 Jamnapari) were chosen for testicular biometry. The average body weight for Sirohi and Jamnapari bucks was 48.7±3.0 kg and 38.82±1.3 kg, respectively. Similarly, the average scrotal circumference was measured to be 27.35±0.57 cm for Sirohi bucks and 25.11±0.4 cm for Jamnapari bucks. The semen volume of Sirohi and Jamnapari bucks was recorded to be 1.15±0.1 ml and 0.79±0.0 ml, respectively. Additionally, the total sperm concentration per ejaculate was found to be 3120±165.6 million for Sirohi bucks and 2263±101.0 million for Jamnapari bucks. There was a positive correlation between scrotal circumference and body weight in both the breeds. The measurements of the left testis exceeded those of the right testis at the same age. The semen volume and total sperm concentration per ejaculate showed a strong and statistically significant correlation with almost all testicular indices (p< 0.01). This study was designed to evaluate some reproductive indices of the White Fulani Indigenous cattle bulls in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. Forty apparently healthy bulls of age one to five years were used for this study. The parameters studied included scrotal circumference, scrotal length, chest girth and body weight. These parameters were taken using measuring tapes. The result obtained showed that there was significant (p < 0.05) differences in the scrotal circumference and scrotal length between bulls in the age groups 1, 2 and 3 years old while 4 and 5 years old showed no significant (p > 0.05) difference. There was significant difference (p < 0.05) in the chest girth and body weight of bulls in all the five age groups (1 - 5 years old). This suggests that the age of puberty in the indigenous white Fulani bulls is three years. Veterinarians and farmers can leverage on these reproductive indices (scrotal circumference, scrotal length, chest girth, and body weight) to select bulls with superior breeding potential, ultimately improving herd health and productivity. Context. The knowledge of the genetic variability of gestation length and its correlations with other traits is relevant for selection decisions in beef cattle. Aims. Genetic parameters and trends were estimated for gestation length (first (GL1), repeated measures range of 1--6 (GL)) and traits currently used as selection criteria (birth weight (BW), weight gain from birth to weaning (BWG), weight gain from weaning to yearling (WYG), scrotal circumference (SC), score of conformation (YC), score of precocity (YP), and score of muscling (YM)) in Brazilian Angus cattle. In addition, direct and correlated selection responses were predicted. Methods. A series of single- and two-trait Bayesian analyses were performed on beef cattle data from14 farms across different regions of Brazil, by using linear and threshold animal models. Key results. A moderate heritability was estimated for GL1 (0.356 ± 0.058); however, the estimate for GL was low (0.189 ± 0.028) as was that for repeatability (0.204 ± 0.027). Lower accuracies of breeding values were obtained for GL than for GL1, ranging from0.490 ± 0.161 to 0.687 ± 0.037. Direct heritability estimates for growth and body composition traits were low, except for SC and BWG (0.301 ± 0.060 and 0.241 ± 0.019 respectively). Genetic correlations of 0.558 ± 0.121 and 0.739 ± 0.131 were estimated between GL1 and BW, and between GL and BW respectively. The other traits studied were estimated to have weak or nearzero genetic correlations with gestation length traits. Positive and moderate genetic associations were estimated between BW and BWG, SC, and visual scores (ranging from 0.338 ± 0.095 to 0.458 ± 0.092), but a near-zero estimate was obtained with WYG (0.127 ± 0.150). Weight gains were more highly genetically correlated with visual scores than between themselves (BWG and WYG) and with SC. The SC was highly genetically correlated with visual scores (0.684 ± 0.054 to 0.714 ± 0.050). Genetic trends showed that all traits studied have been changing in a positive direction, being unfavourable for BW and GL. Higher genetic gains were expected from using direct selection than from using indirect selection for GL1. Conclusions. Rapid growth is genetically associated with superior conformation, precocity and musculature, as well as a large scrotal circumference in males. However, selection decisions that heavily focus on these traits are likely to lead to more calving difficulties in the longer term. Implications. Selection indices should incorporate traits that measure calving difficulty directly if relevant records are available. Currently, considering its practical implications in primiparous anoestrus, the first-gestation length could serve as a viable alternative for inclusion in selection indices. The experiment was carried out at the experimental unit of Aydın Adnan Menderes University, Çine Vocational School, located in Çine, Aydın, Turkey. The experimental groups were control (C, n = 9), a single ITI of 20% NaCl (T1, n = 8) or 40% NaCl (T2, n = 8). The growth, reproductive characteristics, and histological appearance of the testis in the kids were examined up to nine months of age in different periods. The live weights, scrotal circumference, semen and sexual behavior characteristics were not different among groups. The histogical findings were observed in both testes at nine months of age. Greater intensity of destruction was observed in the testes of T1 and T2 kids than that of C kids. High levels of tubular degeneration were detected in testicular tissue samples in T1 and T2 groups. Beef production systems primarily use natural service (NS) for breeding. However, a significant number of bulls used for NS are subfertile, limiting the profitability of the cow‐calf operations. Therefore, producers should select bulls based on breeding soundness evolutions (BSE) to ensure higher pregnancy rates. Several factors can affect the bull ability to pass a BSE. We hypothesize that calving date would be a factor that affects the bull probability of approval at the first BSE. For this purpose, a multivariate logistic regression in a dataset of 14,737 BSEs from young Nellore bulls was used. Correlations between calving date, biometrics, and semen traits were evaluated using Pearson's correlation coefficient. Our results demonstrated that the calving date affected the probability of approval at the first BSE (p <.05). Indeed, the variable that added more information to our model was the calving date, far more than the age group of the bulls according to Akaike's information criterion. Hence, bulls born on day 0 of the calving season have 1.26 more chances to be approved at the first BSE than bulls born 21 days later. This result highlights the importance of getting the dams of future bulls pregnant as soon as possible in the breeding season. In addition, the calving season should be no longer than 47 days to achieve 80% BSE approval in 20–22 months old Nellore bulls. The strongest correlation was with SC, which decreased as the calving date increased. Therefore, the calving date may be used as a predictor of the outcome of the first BSE in young bulls. In that way, the calving date can help seedstock producers to maximize efficiency in making crucial management decisions during the breeding and calving season including nutrition, reproductive, and culling. Considering the economic and commercial efficiency of the beef production chain, the yield and quality of the meat produced must also be included in breeding programs. For the Nellore breed, including the polled herd, these aspects have not been much studied. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for scrotal circumference adjusted to 365 (SC365) and 450 (SC450) days of age, age at first calving (AFC), accumulated productivity (AP), stayability (STAY), longissimus muscle area (LMA), thickness of subcutaneous fat over the 12th–13th ribs (BF), thickness of subcutaneous fat over the rump (RF), and shear force measured by Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) of polled Nellore cattle. Bayesian analyses were performed by adopting a linear animal model, whereas STAY analyses used the linear threshold model. Heritability estimates were 0.31 (SC365), 0.37 (SC450), 0.16 (AFC), 0.25 (AP), 0.16 (STAY), 0.30 (LMA), 0.13 (BF), 0.24 (RF), and 0.15 (WBSF), indicating moderate response to selection. Genetic and residual correlations between SC365 and SC450 were high (0.91 and 0.74, respectively), as well as the genetic correlations of AP with SC365, SC450, AFC, and STAY (0.61, 0.62, − 0.69, and 0.83, respectively). Genetic and residual correlations of WBSF with reproductive and carcass characteristics exhibited high standard deviations, however favorable. Based on the results, it is expected that in the medium term, animals with greater sexual precocity will also have greater accumulated productivity and longer permanence of females in the herd, along with superior carcass traits. However, due to the low heritabilities and small genetic associations with reproductive traits, fat thickness characteristics (BF and RF) will still require direct selection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This meta-analysis review was conducted to determine the relationship between scrotal circumference and semen production quality in bulls. The research method includes article search, selection, and assessment stages based on the specified inclusion criteria. The results of the selection and assessment of articles obtained 38 articles for meta-analysis. Data analysis was performed using the CMA program using a random-effects model to estimate the correlation coefficient. The results of the meta-analysis showed that overall scrotal circumference was significantly correlated (p < 0.05) with semen volume (r = 0.441), semen concentration (r = 0.328), and spermatozoa motility (r = 0.411). The relationship between scrotal circumference and semen quality was positive in the moderate category. Analysis based on the variation of bull breeds showed that the relationship between scrotal circumference and semen volume and concentration was not significantly different in Bos taurus, Bos indicus, and Bos sondaicus cattle (p > 0.05). Scrotal circumference and spermatozoa motility were significantly different in the Bos taurus, Bos indicus, and Bos sondaicus cattle (p < 0.05). This meta-analysis confirms that scrotal circumference can be a parameter in determining superior bulls because the scrotal circumference is positively related to the quality of semen production.

Background: Assessing semen characteristics is an important step before semen preservation. This study aimed to collect, evaluate, and preserve indigenous buck semen in the coastal area of Bangladesh. Methods: The study was conducted at the Theriogenology and Animal Reproductive Biotechnology Laboratory, Department of Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, from July 2021 to June 2022. We selected four bucks based on non-return rate, pregnancy rate of does, and various parameters including age, body weight, scrotal circumference, and testicular epididymal length. These selected animals received a regimen of vitamins, minerals, anthelmintics, and concentrated feed. Semen was collected using the artificial vagina method, and data on color, odor, volume, viscosity, mass activity, consistency, concentration, and individual sperm motility were recorded and analyzed after collection. Results: The semen of bucks exhibited a creamy white color and a fishy odor. The mean (±SD) of scrotal circumference (SC) of four bucks was 20.43±0.52, while the testicular epididymal length (TEL) was 11.03±0.59. Buck-2 (B-2) and buck-1 (B-1) showed significantly (p<0.05) higher volumes than buck-3 (B-3), and buck (B-4). B-1 also displayed significantly (p<0.05) higher mass activity compared to B-2, B-3, and B-4. In addition, B-2 and B-1 showed significantly (p<0.05) greater consistency than B-3, and B-4. The highest concentrations were observed in B-2 and B-1 compared to B-3 and B-4. In terms of individual sperm motility, B-1 showed significantly (p<0.05) higher motility (81.0±05.16) than B-2 (71.0±03.94), B-3 (66.0±03.94), and B-4 (80.0±07.45). Regarding chilling duration, a significant reduction in sperm motility was observed during storage at 4°C. This indicated that sperm motility varied significantly (p = 0.000) with varying chilling durations. Conclusions: The study suggests that the individual progressive sperm motility at 4°C gradually decreases but remains suitable for artificial insemination up to 72 h (≥50±7.65). B-1 and B-2 demonstrated relatively promising results in semen evaluation and preservation. Further study is necessary to determine the pregnancy rate of does after insemination with chilled semen. The main aim of this study was to create an automated method for the measurement of the scrotal circumference (SC) of Norwegian Red bulls using 3D images of the scrotum based on convolutional neural networks. The study population was bull calves recruited for performance testing before the selection of bulls for semen production in the breeding program. Bulls were measured at four different time points: upon arrival in quarantine (Q) and thereafter at approximately 6, 9 and 12 months of age. Both 3D images and manual SC measurements were performed at all time points. In our approach, SC could be calculated without direct contact with the bull, using only 3D images and a simple, user–friendly application into which mentioned images are uploaded. The results show that SC measurements obtained using semantic segmentation are comparable with manual measurements. The mean prediction error was significantly different between age groups Q, 6, 9 and 12, and it was -3.07 cm, -3.02 cm, -1.79 cm and -1.11 cm, respectively. The results show a significant difference in the measurement error of the SC based on the quality of the images. Images were categorised into three quality groups. For good prediction accuracy, we recommend capturing 3D images of quality 2 – full circle from individuals older than 6 months.

Background: Testes, epididymis and accessory glands measurements should be mandatory as an imminent for male selection. This study aimed at defining the ultrasonographic characteristics and measurements of testes, epididymis and accessory glands at different growth stages in Chios rams. Methods: Sixteen rams were assigned by age class into: group A (pre-pubertal, n=3), group B (pubertal, n=5) and group C (mature, n=8). Scrotal circumference (SC) was measured using a tape. Scrotal contents were examined using a B-mode ultrasound. Testicular breadth (TB), thicknesses of tunica albuginea (TA) and mediastinum (MS) and the largest dimension of epididymal tail (EpT) were estimated. Trans-rectal ultrasound was carried out to estimate the echogenicity and diameter of bulbourethral gland (BUG), height of pars dessiminata of prostate (PDP) and maximum breadth of seminal gland (SG). Result: SC increased curvilinear with age. Testicular echogenicity increased with age. Thickness of TA did not differ with age. MS could not detect in pre-pubertal rams, reached maximum thickness with puberty and became relatively thinner by maturity. EpT evidently enlarged with puberty. BUG, PDP and SG exhibited moderate echogenicity. They reached their greatest size with sexual maturity. SC estimated by tape and TB estimated by US correlated with most of the ultrasonographic measurements of the epididymis and accessory glands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study was conducted to evaluate the relationships between testicular traits, body measurements and body weight. A total of twenty-five (25) Boer goat males aged between one and two years were used in the study. Testicular length (TL), scrotal circumference (SC), body weight (BW), body length (BL), heart girth (HG), rump height (RH), withers height (WH) and sternum height (SH) were measured. Pearson's correlation and simple linear regression were used for data analysis. Phenotypic correlation outcomes indicated that SC had a positive statistically significant (P<0.05) correlation with BW (r = 0.425) and non-significant correlation with BL (r = 0.108), HG (r = 0.082), RH (r = 0.038), WH (r = 0.097) and SH (r = 0.280), while TL had non-significant correlation with BW (r = 0.009), BL (r = -0.351), HG (r = -0.147), RH (r = -0.108), WH (r = -0.086) and SH (r = 0.052). Regression analysis model showed that SC had the highest coefficient of determination R2 (0.178) as compared with other testicular traits and body measurements. In conclusion, the relationship results suggest that by improving scrotal circumference might result in improving the body weight of Boer goat's bucks. Simple linear regression results suggest that scrotal circumference is great trait to predict body weight of Boer goat's bucks. Background: Natural service breeding is common in U.S. cow-calf operations. Diseases impacting bull reproductive performance have significant economic consequences for producers. Anaplasmosis may be an underappreciated cause of poor reproductive performance in bulls. The primary systemic effects of bovine anaplasmosis including anemia, fever, and weight loss, can all result in unsatisfactory reproductive performance. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate breeding soundness examination (BSE) outcomes and clinical changes in bulls during and upon resolution of clinical anaplasmosis. Anaplasma marginale-challenged bulls were observed for clinical disease and infection progression and changes in breeding soundness compared to uninfected control bulls for 16 weeks. Results: All Anaplasma marginale-challenged bulls were PCR-positive, seropositive, and showed clinical signs by 3-, 17-, and 24-days post-challenge, respectively. Clinical signs of anaplasmosis included pallor, icterus, fever (≥ 40.2 °C), and weight loss. Acute anemia was observed in all challenged bulls with PCV nadirs ≤ 18% and peak percent parasitized erythrocyte ≥ 50%. Decreased scrotal circumference and poor semen quality (e.g., increased percentage of abnormal spermatozoa, decreased progressively motile sperm), were initially observed within days after onset of clinical anaplasmosis signs and continued weeks beyond disease resolution. Control bulls remained negative for A. marginale. Conclusion: This pilot study demonstrates that clinical anaplasmosis reduces breeding soundness in beef bulls. Anaplasmosis should be considered as a differential for bulls with decreased semen quality, especially within endemic areas. Scrotal circumference is an important reproductive index of breeding rams, which has a high genetic correlation with ejaculation volume and semen quality. In this study, the scrotal circumference of 1353 male Hu sheep at different stages of development was measured and descriptive statistical analysis was performed. The results showed that the coefficient of variation of scrotal circumference at each stage was greater than 10%, and its heritability were moderately to high, ranging from 0.318 to 0.719. We used PCR amplification and Sanger sequencing to scan the polymorphisms of the IGFALS gene, and performed association analysis with the circumference of the scrotum at different stages. We identified a synonymous mutation g.918 G > C in exon 1 of the IGFALS gene, and this mutation was significantly associated with scrotal circumference at 100, 120, 140, 160 and 180 days ( p  < 0.05). Therefore, IGFALS gene polymorphism can be used as a molecular marker affecting scrotal circumference of Hu sheep, which can provide a reference for future molecular marker-assisted selection of scrotal circumference in sheep.

ABSTRACT We aimed to estimate genetic parameters for growth, reproductive, and carcass traits in Tabapuã cattle. Phenotypic data were collected between 1990 and 2019 in 1,218 farms, and the pedigree file had 340,868 animals. The traits evaluated were body weight at 120 (W120), 210 (W210), 365 (W365), and 550 (W550) days of age; age at first calving (AFC), scrotal circumference at 365 days of age (SC365), ribeye area (REA), backfat thickness (BF), and rump fat thickness (RF). The (co)variance components were estimated using the restricted maximum likelihood method, considering single and two-traits animal models. For all traits, the models considered fixed, direct additive genetic, and residual random effects. In addition, for W120 and W210, the maternal additive genetic and maternal permanent environmental effects were also included. Heritabilities for W120, W210, W365, W550, SC365, REA, BF, and RF were of moderate magnitude (0.15, 0.16, 0.23, 0.19, 0.22, 0.36, 0.31, and 0.27, respectively). Low heritability was observed for AFC (0.07). The genetic correlations between growth traits were higher than 0.90, while AFC and SC365 presented negative moderate correlation (−0.66). The REA showed low genetic correlations with BF (0.07) and RF (0.07), whereas BF and RF were highly correlated (0.77). Considering the heritability estimates, selection for AFC would result in limited genetic gain, while for the other traits, it would be satisfactory. Based on the high genetic correlations between growth traits, selection of Tabapuã animals can be performed at younger ages. Additionally, animals can be indirectly selected for AFC through SC365, and only one fat thickness trait may be used in the selection process considering the high genetic correlation and similar heritability values for BF and RF.

Simple Summary: Bull fertility is an important contributor of the herd reproductive success, especially in natural service mating systems. Even if the BBSE (Bulls Breeding Soundness Evaluation) is a rapid and cost-effective screening, it is unable to evaluate all the parameters involved in fertility decline, especially those related to genetics and environment. Based on this, the objectives of the study were (i) to define the semen characteristics of young Italian Simmental bulls, (ii) to evaluate the relationship between scrotal circumference (SC), age, and semen characteristics and (iii) to relate the climatic conditions during the entire spermatogenesis to variations in spermatozoa motility and morphology. Concerning the evaluation of SC, this is the first report on Italian Simmental breed; its increase was linked with the concentration and number of total spermatozoa. Considering the effect of the weather changes, the study confirmed the impact of the increasing temperature and humidity on spermatozoa motility and morphology, accordingly with the moment in which the heat stress occurred. Therefore, considering the importance of fertility, wider knowledge of the factors influencing these parameters will help maintain/improve the reproductive capability of the animals and finally, for the producer, the profitability of his herd. The objectives of the study aimed to evaluate the effect of weather conditions and scrotal circumference (SC) on standard semen characteristics of Italian Simmental young bulls (n = 577), all raised in the same performance station and sampled by the artificial vagina (AV) method. Considering the increasing SC, the results showed a significant increase in quantitative semen parameters (p < 0.05 and p < 0.0001, for sperm concentration and total number of spermatozoa, respectively); for every extra centimeter of SC, 17.5 × 106 spermatozoa/mL and 0.102 × 109 of total spermatozoa were produced. The age of the animal at semen collection (395 and 465 days) had similar positive effects. The effect of the average temperature humidity index (THI limits ≤ 40 and ≥70) in the previous 60, 30, and 10 days before the semen collection was also considered. Sixty days before the semen collection, the increasing THI increased both primary (p < 0.0001) and secondary (p < 0.0001) abnormalities while the percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa decreased (p < 0.0001). Thirty and ten days before collection, the same effect on morphological traits was maintained, but total and progressive motility was also influenced (p < 0.01) with an unexpected increasing pattern. This study was conducted on 13 bulls of Kankrej cattle breed maintained at Dama semen station of Banas dairy (Gujarat) to study the effects of non-genetic factors, viz., season of birth and year of birth on body weight at first semen collection (BWFSC) and scrotal circumference at first semen collection (SCFSC) as well as the effect of BWFSC and SCFSC on future semen production traits like semen production period, age of bull at disposal and lifetime production of frozen semen doses per bull. The overall least squares means for body weight of bulls and scrotal circumference of bulls at first semen collection, semen production period, age of bull at disposal and lifetime production of frozen semen doses per bull were 578.68 ± 25.18 kg, 30.86 ± 1.60 cm, 704.3 ± 151.22 days, 1875.73 ± 135.95 days and 55243.83 ± 21307.60 doses, respectively. Results of the present study revealed that body weight and scrotal circumference of bulls at first semen collection were not significantly affected by season of birth and year of birth. • Pre-conceptional dietary caloric manipulation of sheep dams does not alter ram lamb growth indices. • Testosterone and scrotal circumference are positively associated with ram body weight in peripubertal rams. • Ram lambs achieve sustained testosterone by 82 days, suggesting early indication of puberty. • Scrotal size and seminal parameters of rams are unaltered by maternal pre-conceptional diet caloric intake. Gestational diet manipulation can lead to inadequate fetal nutrient supply resulting in low birth weight, limited postnatal growth, and consequently, reduced reproductive performance in the progeny. However, effects of short-term maternal pre-conceptional dietary manipulation on postnatal growth and reproductive parameters of male offspring in large animals remains unexplored. To determine these consequences, female crossbred (Polypay x Dorset) sheep were allocated to three groups (n = 33/group) of dietary manipulation for 21 days prior to mating under the following conditions: (1) control at 100 % of maintenance energy requirements (40 Kcal of metabolizable energy/kg body weight [BW]), (2) undernutrition (UN) at 50 % of Control intake, and (3) overnutrition (ON) at 200 % of maintenance energy. Singleton ram lambs (UN:9; C:12; ON:6) were monitored from birth until 8 months of age, including birth weight, weekly weights, weight gain, body mass index (BMI), and circulating testosterone. After weaning, monthly scrotal circumference and subcutaneous fat depth were measured. Semen morphology and motility were evaluated at 7 and 8 months of age. Birth weight, weight gain, and BMI at birth and weaning were not significantly different among nutritional treatments. None of the pre-conceptional diets affected body weight change from weaning until 36 weeks of age, BMI, fat depth, or scrotal circumference across the experiment. A sustained rise in plasma testosterone concentrations was detected when ram lambs were, on average, 82 days old and 37 kg. Both testosterone concentrations and scrotal circumference were positively correlated to body weight regardless of treatment group. In addition, seminal parameters did not differ among treatments, but a transient increase in plasma testosterone at 18 weeks of age was observed in ON ram lambs compared to control rams. In conclusion, birth weight, growth indices, and seminal parameters in singleton rams are resilient features in the progeny upon maternal pre-conceptional dietary manipulation in sheep. The study was conducted at the Goat Farm, Biotechnology Centre of DVSS Keningau, Sabah, to determine the effect of two groups of scrotal circumferences on sexual performance and the correlation between scrotal circumference and sexual performance in Boer bucks. Ten healthy Boer bucks aged 1.5 years with an average body weight of 61.15±1.87 kg were randomly selected. They were divided into two groups according to their scrotal circumference. The scrotal circumference between 25 to 28 cm was grouped as G-I (n=5), while G-II (n=5) consisted of the scrotal circumference between 29 to 32 cm. Bucks were fed with commercial pellets and Napier grass according to the farm's routine practice. Data on the scrotal circumference and sexual performance, including latency to the first mount, number of mounts, latency to the first ejaculation, refractory period, number of ejaculations, and mating efficiency, were collected every two weeks for five consecutive weeks. Results indicated that Boer bucks with a scrotal circumference between 29 to 32 cm improved their sexual performance; the number of mounts significantly decreased (P<0.05), and the number of ejaculations and mating efficiency significantly increased (P<0.05) compared to the Boer bucks with a scrotal circumference between 25 to 28 cm. A high correlation was reported between scrotal circumference and the number of mounts (r= -0.476, P<0.01), while scrotal circumference correlated with mating efficiency (r = 0.323, P<0.05). Testosterone Concentrations, Odor, Scrotal Circumference, and Sexual Interactions with... Time had a marked effect on the plasma testosterone concentration ( I p i < 0.01), as did the interaction of time × buck photoperiod treatment ( I p i < 0.01), the interaction of time × agonist ( I p i < 0.01), and the interaction of time × buck photoperiod treatment × agonist ( I p i < 0.01) (Figure 4A,B). In Experiment 1, the results demonstrate that contact with females induces a rapid rise in the testosterone concentrations of the bucks exposed to a natural photoperiod; however, this contact did not modify the testosterone concentrations of the photostimulated bucks. In general, the testosterone concentration of both groups, used or not, was similar for the entire experiment, except when the bucks were introduced to the females (25 March), at which time the testosterone concentrations of the bucks used increased and decreased rapidly (Figure 1B). The aim of the study was to trace the development of some morphological characteristics of puberty and their development up to the 44th week as well as the relationships between them, to find the best subjects based on the phenotype. Weaning weight was measured as well as their weight once a month until the 44th week. Measuring the circumference of the scrotum of experimental young bucks was performed weekly from weaning to 44 weeks of age. Monitoring of the release of the penis from the foreskin was performed weekly from weaning until the time of its full release. The average value of the circumference of the scrotum increased from the 12th week to the 39th week in total for all animals (from 15.8 to 28.4 cm), as well as by breed (BWD - 16.5 to 31 cm ), (Togenburg - 15.5 to 28.5 cm) and (Anglo-Nubian 15.8 to 26.1 cm) (p> 0.05). The variation of the trait was low throughout the study period. The earliest complete release of the penis in our study was observed in the male kids BWD breed -16 weeks. Togenburg kids reached full release at - 18 weeks. In AN kids, the release was at -24 weeks. The correlation coefficient showed a very strong reliable positive relationship between the studied factors in all three studied breeds. Testicular size and body weight could be used as a determining factor in the selection of prepubertal male kids.

Andaman local goat (ALG) is meat animal in Andaman and Nicobar islands (ANI) of India. Present study was conducted to measure the seasonal effect on physiological and haematological profiles, scrotal circumference (SC) and testicular weight during rainy and dry summer seasons in ALG. A total of 10 adult intact ALG bucks (body condition score: 3.0-3.5 and classified as good; 3-4 years) were selected from the goat breeding farm, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair, ANI, India. Results revealed that these experimental profiles differed significantly (p < 0.05) between the seasons. Significantly (p < 0.05) higher haematological profiles, SC and testicular weight were observed in rainy season than in dry summer season whereas physiological profiles such as rectal, skin and scrotal temperatures were higher in dry summer than in wet rainy season. The study concluded that the rainy season has significantly greater beneficial effects than dry summer season on reproduction and artificial breeding programmes in semi-intensive management of goat in the present location.

The study was undertaken to determine the effect of bodyweight and scrotal circumference on semen production traitsin Murrah buffalo bulls. Data on seminal characteristics,body weight, and scrotal circumference collected from 77Murrah bulls were utilized to study the effects using leastsquareanalysis under General Linear Model. Body weightand scrotal circumference showed a highly significantimpact on all semen production traits. Similarly, thecorrelation coefficients were also highly significant andpositive, except the non-correlation between scrotalcircumference and post-thaw motility. An increasing trendin seminal parameters in rise with body weight and scrotalcircumference were also observed. Furthermore, bullsweighing 540 kg and above with scrotal circumference of>30 cm displayed better semen quality with higher numberof frozen semen doses per ejaculate. These findings suggestthat higher body weight and scrotal circumference couldbe considered as important selection criteria parameterswhile selecting young bulls for the purpose of frozen semenproduction to improve the frozen semen doses.

Scrotal circumference (SC) is a commonly used trait related to sexual precocity in bulls. Genome-wide association studies have uncovered a lot of genes related to this trait, however, only those present on autosomes. The inclusion of the second biggest chromosome (BTAX) can improve the knowledge of the genetic architecture of this trait. In this study, we performed a weighted, single-step, genome-wide association study using a 777 k BovineHD BeadChip (IllumHD) to analyze the association between SNPs and SC in Brazilian Nelore cattle. Phenotypes from 79,300 males and 3263 genotypes (2017 from females and 1246 from males)—(39,367 SNPs markers located at ChrX) were used. We identified eight regions on chromosome X that displayed important associations with SC. The results showed that together the genomic windows explained 28.52% of the genetic variance for the examined trait. Genes with potential functions in reproduction and fertility regulation were highlighted as candidates for sexual precocity rates in Nelore cattle (AFF2 and PJA1). Moreover, we found 10 genes that had not previously been identified as being associated with sexual precocity traits in cattle. These findings will further advance our understanding of the genetic architecture, considering mainly the presence of the chromosome X, for indicine cattle reproductive traits, being useful in the context of genomic prediction in beef cattle. Berari goat is the heritage and one of the potential animal genetic resources of Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. The present experiment estimated semen characteristics and their relationships with scrotal circumference in Berari bucks. The means of scrotal circumference, testicular length, and testicular width were 24.62 ± 0.51, 7.67 ± 0.30 and 5.04 ± 0.23 cm, respectively, with significant variations among the bucks. All the three traits were highly significantly and positively interrelated (r= 0.812 to 0.861), and had positive associations with most seminal attributes (r= 0.176 to 0.581), except pH. Scrotal circumference of bucks significantly affected all the semen characteristics, except seminal pH. Sperm concentration is the important semen trait of Berari goat where reasonable genetic progress may be possible through selection. The study demonstrated that the selection for increased scrotal circumference should have a favorable correlated response in semen characteristics of Berari bucks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ongole Crossbred cattle or more popular known as Peranakan Ongole (PO) cattle is one of local breeds cattle in Indonesia. For improving the population and genetic quality, superior bull with high capacity to produce semen is seriously required. This study aimed to find out the estimation value of semen production of PO bull based on body weight and scrotal circumference. A total sampling of 9 bull candidates of PO cattle available at National Artificial Center (NAIC) Singosari, Malang, Indonesia were used in this study. The method used was case study. Scrotal circumference was directly measured as a primary data. While body weight, semen volume, semen concentration and sperm motility were collected from BBIB Singosari from secondary data. Data was analyzed using simple linear regression. The results showed that with the limited number of samples, there is no significant correlation (P>0.05) between body weight and scrotal circumference on semen volume, semen concentration, and sperm motility. It was concluded that with limited number of samples involved in this study, there was no significantly on semen production based on body weight and scrotal circumference on PO bull. The suggestion was to improve the correlation value and significant result. The number of samples should be increased.

Objective: To assess the testicular and semen characteristics of Tropical Milking Criollo (CLT) bulls in the subhumid Mexican tropics. Design/methodology/approach: Eight bulls were evaluated and distributed in two groups: G1 (n=5): young bulls and G2 (n=3): adult bulls. All bulls were managed under grazing and evaluated throughout a year. From each bull, the following measurements were taken once a month: live weight, body condition score, scrotal circumference, and testicular width, length and volume. Semen was obtained every 3 months via an artificial vagina. The evaluated semen variables were: aspect, volume, mass and individual motility, and sperm concentration and morphology. Results: Live weight and testicular measurements linearly increased during the study in bulls from both groups. All bulls had a scrotal circumference larger than the minimum threshold value for cattle and highquality semen. Study Limitations/Implications: The low availability of CLT bulls prevented the inclusion of a larger number of animals in the research. This low animal availability makes it necessary to establish standard values for testicular measurements and semen characteristics in the CLT breed in order to select the best individuals as sires and contribute to its conservation. Findings/Conclusions: The CLT bulls had good scrotal circumference and semen quality from a young age and into adulthood. Two experiments were carried out. Firstly, 54 anestrous females were placed in contact with photostimulated males (Photo; n = 27) or with no photostimulated males (Natural; n = 27). Moreover, a group of bucks treated with artificial photoperiod and a group of bucks subjected to natural photoperiod without contact with females was used (Photo Isolated and Natural Isolated, respectively). In the Natural groups, the testosterone concentrations were similar except for three days after the introduction of the bucks to the does (19.72 ± 4.11 vs. 2.05 ± 0.25 ng/mL for Natural and Natural isolated bucks, respectively, p < 0.05). However, no differences were observed in the Photo groups during the entire experiment. The percentage of females showing estrous was higher in the group of females in contact with photostimulated bucks (96 vs. 74%, respectively, p < 0.05). In the second experiment, a GnRH agonist, deslorelin, was used to regulate the testosterone concentrations of the bucks. Seventy anestrous females were divided into five groups depending on the treatment received by the bucks to which they were exposed: photostimulated bucks (Photo group, n = 14); photostimulated bucks but treated with the agonist at the onset of the photoperiod treatment (Photo-Ago Long group, n = 13); photostimulated bucks but treated with the agonist at the end of the photoperiod treatment (Photo-Ago Short group, n = 15); bucks receiving no photostimulation but treated with the agonist at the end of the photoperiod treatment period (Natural-Ago Short group, n = 13) and bucks receiving no photostimulation nor agonist (Natural group, n = 15). The agonist treatment increased testosterone concentrations after the injection, which remained high for the entire experiment (p < 0.05). Six days after the introduction of the bucks to the does, the testosterone concentrations increased only in the Natural group reaching similar concentrations to the other groups (12.17 ± 6.55, 16.69 ± 4.53, 8.70 ± 0.61, 11.03 ± 1.45 and 14.42 ± 3.64 ng/mL for Photo, Photo-Ago Long, Photo-Ago Short, Natural-Ago Short and Natural bucks, respectively, p > 0.05). No differences in reproductive parameters were observed (p > 0.05). These results demonstrate that, at Mediterranean latitudes, anestrous females can stimulate the testosterone concentrations of bucks after a period of isolation. The high testosterone concentrations are not a prerequisite for an adequate response to the male effect.

The average value of the circumference of the scrotum increased from the 12th week to the 39th week in total for all animals (from 15.8 to 28.4 cm), as well as by breed (BWD - 16.5 to 31 cm ), (Togenburg - 15.5 to 28.5 cm) and (Anglo-Nubian 15.8 to 26.1 cm) (p> 0.05). The variation of the trait was low throughout the study period. The earliest complete release of the penis in our study was observed in the male kids BWD breed -16 weeks. Togenburg kids reached full release at - 18 weeks. In AN kids, the release was at -24 weeks. The correlation coefficient showed a very strong reliable positive relationship between the studied factors in all three studied breeds. Data on 26 bulls of Kankrej cattle (birth date from 2006 to 2017) inducted at a semen station from 2010 to 2020 were analyzed to study the effects of season and year of birth on age, body weight and scrotal circumference of bull at first semen collection. The overall leastsquares means for age, body weight, and scrotal circumference of bulls at first semen collection were 1122.36 ± 86.9 days, 537.69 ± 10.51 kg and 30.86 ± 1.60 cm. Non-genetic factors like season and year of birth did not contribute significantly (p>0.05) to these parameters' variations. Results of the study revealed well adaptation of Kankrej cattle breed to seasonal changes and farm management took care of yearly variation in such a way that age, body weight and scrotal circumference of Kankrej bulls at first semen collection did not vary significantly. Background. Beef cattle breeds need to be evaluated in pasture production systems. Objective. This study aimed to evaluate the performance, morphology and carcass characteristics of Sindhi bulls on pasture. Methodology. Twenty Sindhi bulls belonging to eight different herds of the state of Rio Grande do Norte were evaluated on an official weight gain test conducted by the Brazilian Association of Zebu Breeders (ABCZ). The experiment lasted for 294 days, including an adaptation period of 70 days. The animals were managed under a rotational grazing system, with periods of occupation of 20 days. Records of body weight and scrotal circumference measurements were taken every 56 days. Carcass evaluation and visual assessment were performed at the last weighing. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, simple linear correlation and means test. Results. The final body weight, average daily gain and scrotal circumference gain reached 304.60 kg, 0.482 kg/day and 10.29 cm, respectively. The loin eye area and intramuscular fat averaged 52.36 cm² and 1.25%, respectively. Significant and positive correlations between carcass ultrasound parameters were observed. Moreover, a positive and significant correlation between loin eye area and visual assessment was reported. There was no effect (P>0.05) of initial body weight on carcass characteristics, performance and visual assessment. Implications. Sindhi breed cattle are efficient in producing meat when fed exclusively with pasture, but need more genetic work that focuses on the deposition of adipose tissue in more valued regions of the carcass. Conclusions. The pasture-based gain performance test demonstrates the hardiness of the Sindhi breed, and the carcass evaluation validates the breed's aptitude for meat production and their precocity in depositing muscles.

Aim: The aim of the present study was to define the onset of puberty in Tazegzawt ram lambs, an Algerian sheep breed in endangered status with a small population in its local area. Materials and Methods: Body growth (body weight and thoracic perimeter), scrotal circumference (SC), penis development stages, and seminal parameters (volume, concentration, and motility) were measured. Data were recorded at fortnightly intervals in 10 animals from 9 to 49 weeks of age. Results: On the basis of seminal analyses, puberty occurred between 29 and 45 weeks of age. At 29 weeks of age, 30% of lambs reached puberty, and at 45 weeks of age, puberty was observed in 100% of the analyzed animals. Body weight appeared as the most determinant factor, and the onset of puberty was observed when animals reached 43.2±6.4 kg body weight with 25.8±3.7 cm of SC. Seminal analyses revealed that all parameters increased regularly from puberty onset except for sperm concentration. The mean semen volume during the study period was 0.48±0.33 mL with 0.84±0.6 mL at 37 weeks of age. Sperm concentration evolved similarly as semen volume; at 29 and 43 weeks of age, the sperm concentration was 942x106 and 1904x106 spermatozoa/mL, respectively. Kinematic parameters including the percentage of motility, the percentage of progressive motility, and gametes velocities as determined by Computer-Aided Sperm Analyzer showed the highest values at 49 weeks of age. Conclusion: The current results revealed that, in Tazegzawt ram lambs, puberty occurs between 29 and 45 weeks when animals reach 43.2±4.6 kg body weight.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of scrotal circumference (SC) with plasma testosterone, seminal vesicles (SVs) weight, and its secretion as measurable indicators of fertility and also to sequence and establish phylogenetic relatedness of certain SV protein genes with other species as such integrated approach is lacking. Materials and Methods: Altogether, 59 apparently healthy male buffaloes sacrificed at slaughterhouse were selected (irrespective of breed) for measuring SC and collecting blood and paired SVs. The SC was measured at greater curvature using soft thread. In the present study, blood plasma testosterone, cholesterol, protein, and glucose in addition to SV fructose, citric acid and proteins in SV fluid were also estimated. The SV tissue was fixed in RNAlater for RNA extraction.Male buffaloes were categorized as per total SV weight into Group I (8.0 g) and dentitions-I (≤18 months), II (18-24 months), and III (≥24 months) to assess the effect of weight and dentition age on SC, SV weight, and its certain secretions. Data were analyzed using linear model procedure including Tukey HSD test and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Variance inflation and condition index were also used to assess multicollinearity. This study was conducted to determine the effect of dietary supplementation of organic zinc (Availa®Zn100) and selenium (Availa®Se1000) on semen characteristics, testes measures and serum testosterone concentration. Twenty Sanjabi rams (50.01 ± 5.6 kg) were randomly divided into four equal groups, given the basal diet as control (C) or supplemented with 0.3 mg/kg Se (SE) or 40 mg/kg Zn (ZN) or 40 mg/kg Zn plus 0.3 mg/kg Se (ZS) for 120 days experiment (from July to November). The semen samples and blood samples were collected every 3 weeks and scrotal circumference was measured every 15 days.
