This book presents a reconstruction of the Hellenistic-Roman glass industry from the point of view of raw material procurement. Within the ERC funded ARCHGLASS project, the authors of this work developed new geochemical techniques to provenance primary glass making. They investigated both production and consumer sites of glass, and identified suitable mineral resources for glass making through geological prospecting. Because the source of the raw materials used in the manufacturing of natron glass can be determined, new insights in the trade of this material are revealed. While eastern Mediterranean glass factories were active throughout the Hellenistic to early Islamic period, western Mediterranean and possibly Italian and North African sources also supplied the Mediterranean world with raw glass in early Roman times. By combining archaeological and scientific data, the authors develop new interdisciplinary techniques for an innovative archaeological interpretation of glass trade in the Hellenistic-Roman world, highlighting the development of glass as an economic material.

Significant relationships exist between general fluid intelligence and each of the following constructs: short-term memory capacity, working memory capacity (WMC), and processing speed. However, the interrelationship among all four constructs has not been investigated. Multiple measures of each of these constructs were obtained from 120 healthy young adults. Structural equation modeling was then performed to determine which construct served as the best predictor of general fluid intelligence. The results suggest that WMC, but not short-term memory capacity or processing speed, is a good predictor of general fluid intelligence in young adults. Possible mechanisms underlying the link between WMC and general fluid intelligence are discussed. D 2002 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

Tumor growth requires angiogenesis, which in turn requires an imbalance in the presence of angiogenic and angiostatic factors. We have shown that the CXC chemokine family, consisting of members that are either angiogenic or angiostatic, is a major determinant of tumor-derived angiogenesis in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Intratumor injection of interferon-inducible protein 10 (IP-10, or CXCL10), an angiostatic CXC chemokine, led to reduced tumor growth in a SCID mouse model of NSCLC. In this study, we hypothesized that treatment with CXCL10 would, by restoring the angiostatic balance, improve long-term survival in NSCLC-bearing SCID mice. To test this hypothesis, A549 NSCLC cells were injected in the subcutis of the flank, followed by intratumor injections with CXCL10 continuously (group I), or for ten weeks (group II), or a control group (human serum albumin). Tumors are dependent on angiogenesis for survival and propagation. Accumulated evidence suggests that macrophages are a potentially important source of angiogenic factors in many disease states. However, the role(s) of macrophages in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have not been determined. We hypothesized that monocyte-derived macrophages are induced by NSCLC to increase expression of angiogenic factors. To define the role of macrophage-tumor cell interaction with respect to angiogenesis, human peripheral blood monocytes (PBM) were cocultured with A549 (human bronchoalveolar cell carcinoma) or Calu 6 (human anaplastic carcinoma) NSCLC cells. The resultant conditioned medium (CM) was evaluated for angiogenic potential and for expression of angiogenic factors. We found that endothelial cell chemotactic activity (as a measure of angiogenic potential) was significantly increased in response to CM from cocultures of PBM/NSCLC compared with PBM alone, NSCLC alone, or a combination of NSCLC and PBM CM generated separately. Subsequent analysis by ELISA reveals markedly increased CXC chemokine expression, with a lesser increase in vascular endothelial growth factor, in CM from PBM/NSCLC coculture. Neutralizing Ab to angiogenic CXC chemokines blocked the increase in endothelial cell chemotaxis. Furthermore, with separately generated CM as a stimulus, we found that macrophages are the predominant source of increased CXC chemokine expression. Finally, we found that NSCLC-derived macrophage migration-inhibitory factor is responsible for the increased expression of macrophage-derived angiogenic activity. These data suggest that the interaction between host macrophages and NSCLC cells synergistically increases angiogenic potential, and that this is due to an increased elaboration of angiogenic CXC chemokines.

Bronchogenic carcinoma is the leading cause of malignancy-related mortality in the United States, with an overall 5-year survival rate of less than 15%. This aggressive behavior reflects, among other traits, the capacity of the tumor to evade normal host immune defenses, and to induce a pro-angiogenic environment. A central feature of any immune response toward tumors is the recruitment of specific immune cell populations. In the present study we investigated the infiltration of monocytes in human specimens of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The presence of macrophages in NSCLC tumors was documented by immunohistochemistry. In vitro chemotaxis assays demonstrated higher monocyte chemotactic activity in NSCLC tumor homogenates than in normal lung tissue. We next investigated the expression of CC chemokines within specimens of NSCLC tumors. Levels of the CC chemokines were higher in NSCLC tumor tissue than in normal lung tissue. Immunolocalization showed that the cells associated with antigenic CC chemokines were the malignant tumor cells, as well as occasional stromal cells. Maximal inhibition of monocyte chemotaxis induced by NSCLC in vitro occurred in the presence of neutralizing antibodies to MCP-1 and MIP-1beta. On follow-up of 15 patients in whom we quantified macrophage infiltration, we found that those with recurrence of disease had higher levels of macrophage infiltration in their initial tumors. However, the functional significance of CC-chemokine-mediated macrophage infiltration into NSCLC remains to be determined.

In a letter-detection task, participants make more errors detecting the letter t in the word the than in other words. According to the unitization hypothesis, errors occur because the word the is processed as a whole unit and lower order processes (such as letter recognition) are not completed (Healy, 1994). According to the structural model of reading, errors occur because the syntactic function of the word the pulls attention away from this word (Koriat & Greenberg, 1991). Three experiments were conducted to compare these theories. In Experiment 1, the frequency of the was manipulated, and letter-detection error rates were compared between low-frequency and high-frequency usage. In Experiment 2, error rates between high- and low-frequency content words were compared. In Experiment 3, letter detection in normally structured sentences and garden-path sentences were compared. Results consistently support the unitization hypothesis.

The effect of text repetition on reading performance and memory was examined. Participants read a set of short passages, each twice in succession. The second reading was either the same text or a paraphrased version of the original text. Both same texts and paraphrased texts were read faster during the second reading, but the repetition effect was slightly smaller for paraphrased texts. This was reflected by changes in global measures of reading performance (e.g., reduced reading time) and by reduced fixation durations on individual words. The results are consistent with a model of text repetition effects in which wording is represented in an abstract, context-independent manner, whereas the situation described by the text is represented in an episodic, context-dependent manner
