Abstract: GPT-4o is an autoregressive omni model that accepts as input any combination of text, audio, image, and video, and generates any combination of text, audio, and image outputs. It's trained end-to-end across text, vision, and audio, meaning all inputs and outputs are processed by the same neural network. GPT-4o can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, which is similar to human response time in conversation. It matches GPT-4 Turbo performance on text in English and code, with significant improvement on text in non-English languages, while also being much faster and 50\% cheaper in the API. GPT-4o is especially better at vision and audio understanding compared to existing models. In line with our commitment to building AI safely and consistent with our voluntary commitments to the White House, we are sharing the GPT-4o System Card, which includes our Preparedness Framework evaluations. In this System Card, we provide a detailed look at GPT-4o's capabilities, limitations, and safety evaluations across multiple categories, focusing on speech-to-speech while also evaluating text and image capabilities, and measures we've implemented to ensure the model is safe and aligned. We also include third-party assessments on dangerous capabilities, as well as discussion of potential societal impacts of GPT-4o's text and vision capabilities.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. Abstract: Late-stage Ca-sulfate-filled fractures are common on Mars. Notably, the Shenandoah formation in the western edge of Jezero crater preserves a variety of Ca-sulfate minerals in the fine-grained siliciclastic rocks explored by the Perseverance rover. However, the depositional environment and timing of the formation of these sulfates is unknown. To address this outstanding problem, we developed a new technique to map the crystal textures of these sulfates in situ at two stratigraphically similar locations in the Shenandoah formation, allowing us to constrain the burial depth and paleoenvironment at the time of their deposition. Our results suggest that some Ca-sulfate analyzed was formed at a burial depth greater than 80m, whereas Ca-sulfates present at another outcrop likely precipitated in a shallow-subsurface environment. These results indicate that samples collected for potential return to Earth at the two studied locations capture two different times and distinct chemical conditions in the depositional history of the Shenandoah formation providing multiple opportunities to evaluate surface and subsurface habitability.

Abstract: We present recent laboratory results demonstrating high-contrast coronagraphy for the future space-based large IR/Optical/Ultraviolet telescope recommended by the Decadal Survey. The High-contrast Imager for Complex Aperture Telescopes (HiCAT) testbed aims to implement a system-level hardware demonstration for segmented aperture coronagraphs with wavefront control. The telescope hardware simulator employs a segmented deformable mirror with 37 hexagonal segments that can be controlled in piston, tip, and tilt. In addition, two continuous deformable mirrors are used for high-order wavefront sensing and control. The low-order sensing subsystem includes a dedicated tip-tilt stage, a coronagraphic target acquisition camera, and a Zernike wavefront sensor that is used to measure and correct low-order aberration drifts. We explore the performance of a segmented aperture coronagraph both in static operations (limited by natural drifts and instabilities) and in dynamic operations (in the presence of artificial wavefront drifts added to the deformable mirrors), and discuss the estimation and control strategies used to reach and maintain the dark-zone contrast using our low-order wavefront sensing and control. 7. Policy consequences of the new neuroeconomic framework

Abstract: Current theories of decision making suggest that the neural circuits in mammalian brains (including humans) computationally combine representations of the past (memory), present (perception), and future (agentic goals) to take actions that achieve the needs of the agent. How information is represented within those neural circuits changes what computations are available to that system which changes how agents interact with their world to take those actions. We argue that the computational neuroscience of decision making provides a new microeconomic framework (neuroeconomics) that offers new opportunities to construct policies that interact with those decision-making systems to improve outcomes. After laying out the computational processes underlying decision making in mammalian brains, we present four applications of this logic with policy consequences: (1) contingency management as a treatment for addiction, (2) precommitment and the sensitivity to sunk costs, (3) media consequences for changes in housing prices after a disaster, and (4) how social interactions underlie the success (and failure) of microfinance institutions.

Abstract: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms affect 40-60% of autistic children and have been linked to differences in adaptive behavior. It is unclear whether adaptive behavior in autistic youth is directly impacted by co-occurring ADHD symptoms or by another associated feature of both autism and ADHD, such as increased irritability. The current study examined relationships between irritability, ADHD symptoms, and adaptive behavior in 3- to 7-year-old autistic children. Results suggest that, after adjusting for co-occurring ADHD symptoms, higher levels of irritability are associated with differences in social adaptive behavior specifically. Understanding relationships between irritability, ADHD, and adaptive behavior in autistic children is critical because measures of adaptive behavior, such as the Vineland Scales of Adaptive Functioning, are often used as a proxy for global functioning, as well as for developing intervention plans and measuring outcomes as primary endpoints in clinical trials.

9. Investigating the Impacts of Differentiated Stimulus Materials in a Learning by Evaluating Activity

Abstract: Classroom research has demonstrated the capacity for significantly influencing student learning by engaging students in evaluation of previously submitted work as an intentional priming exercise for learning; we call this experience "Learning by Evaluating" (LbE). Expanding on current LbE research, we set forth to investigate the impact on student learning by intentionally differing the quality of examples evaluated by the students using adaptive comparative judgement. In this research, university design students (N = 468 students) were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups; while each group evaluated previously collected student work as an LbE priming activity, the work evaluated by each group differed in quality. Using a three-group experimental design, one group of students only evaluated high quality examples, the second only evaluated low quality examples, and the third group of students evaluated a set of mixed-quality examples of the assignment they were about to work on. Following these LbE priming evaluations, students completed the assigned work and then their projects were evaluated to determine if there was a difference between student performance by treatment condition. Additional qualitative analysis was completed on student LbE rationales to explore similarities and differences in student cognitive judgments based on intervention grouping. No significant difference was found between the groups in terms of achievement, but several differences in group judgement approach were identified and future areas needing investigation were highlighted.

10. A Systematic Literature Review of Student Evaluation of Peer Exemplars and Implications for Design, Technology, and Engineering Learning

Abstract: In design courses, reviewing how others have solved design problems or completed projects is common practice and often encouraged by educators. Using student work as examples can provide context for assessment criteria and help students approach new design problems. While studies have explored the use of exemplars in various disciplines, little research has focused on which exemplars to use (e.g., high-quality, low-quality) in design, technology, and engineering fields. To address this gap, researchers conducted a literature review of 33 articles on exemplar use in secondary and post-secondary education. The analysis revealed nine themes related to exemplar use and their impact on student learning, including (1) Clarity of instruction, (2) Learner focus, (3) Motivation for learning, (4) Student reflection on learning, (5) Building student self-efficacy, (6) Identifying instructional challenges, (7) Providing contrasting cases, (8) The relationship between exemplar quality and student work quality, and (9) Raising the bar for learning outcomes. Findings suggest that simply providing an exemplar is not enough and that the selection of an exemplar can have positive or negative impacts on student motivation, understanding, and application. Carefully selecting exemplars and engaging in dialogue with students can help them identify expectations, recognize quality work, and identify potential misconceptions. These findings have implications for those involved in design, technology, and engineering education. Educators can use these findings to guide their selection of exemplars and engage students in meaningful dialogue to aid their learning. Researchers can also use these findings to further investigate the use of exemplars in these fields.

11. Dynamic Competition Between Orbital and Exchange Interactions Selectively Localizes Electrons and Holes Through Polarons

Abstract: Controlling the effects of photoexcited polarons in transition metal oxides can enable the long timescale charge separation necessary for renewable energy applications as well as controlling new quantum phases through dynamically tunable electron-phonon coupling. In previously studied transition metal oxides, polaron formation is facilitated by a photoexcited ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT). When the polaron is formed, oxygen atoms move away from iron centers, which increases carrier localization at the metal center and decreases charge hopping. Studies of yttrium iron garnet and erbium iron oxide have suggested that strong electron and spin correlations can modulate photoexcited polaron formation. To understand the interplay between strong spin and electronic correlations in highly polar materials, we studied gadolinium iron oxide (GdFeO3), which selectively forms photoexcited polarons through an Fe-O-Fe superexchange interaction. Excitation-wavelength-dependent transient extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectroscopy selectively excites LMCT and metal-to-metal charge transfer transitions (MMCT). The LMCT transition suppresses photoexcited polaron formation due to dominant Hubbard interactions, while MMCT transitions result in photoexcited polaron formation within ~373+/-137 fs due to enhanced superexchange interactions. Ab initio theory demonstrates that both electron and hole polarons localize on iron centers following MMCT. In addition to understanding how strong electronic and spin correlations can control strong electron-phonon coupling, these experiments separately measure electron and hole polaron interactions on neighboring metal centers for the first time, providing insight into a large range of charge-transfer and Mott-Hubbard insulators., Comment: 29 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: Silica polymorphs and zeolites are fundamental to a wide range of industrial applications owing to their diverse structural characteristics, thermodynamic and mechanical stability under varying conditions and due to their geological importance. Computational modelling has played a crucial role in understanding the relationship between the structure and functionality of silicas and silicates including zeolites. In this study, we apply the MACE-MP-0 machine learnt interatomic potentials (ML-IP) to model the framework energies of siliceous zeolites and examine the phase transitions of silica and ZSM-5 polymorphs under high-pressure conditions. The results reproduce the known metastability of siliceous zeolites relative to {\alpha}-quartz, with energy differences between microporous and dense phases calculated by MACE-MP-0 medium ML-IP and density functional theory (DFT) methods closely aligning with experimental calorimetric data. The high-pressure simulations reveal distinct compression behaviour in the quartz, coesite, and stishovite polymorphs of silica, with coesite and stishovite showing increased stability at elevated pressures in line with experimental data. The calculated phase transition pressures from quartz to coesite (~3.5 GPa) and coesite to stishovite (~9 GPa) are close to experimental findings, demonstrating the reliability of MACE ML-IP in modelling the structural and energetic properties of silica polymorphs., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

We introduce the concept of \emph{relative signal strength} (RSS), a pointwise measure that quantifies the transferability from noisy to clean posterior. Using RSS, we establish nearly matching upper and lower bounds on the excess risk. Our theoretical findings support the simple \emph{Noise Ignorant Empirical Risk Minimization (NI-ERM)} principle, which minimizes empirical risk while ignoring label noise. Finally, we translate this theoretical insight into practice: by using NI-ERM to fit a linear classifier on top of a self-supervised feature extractor, we achieve state-of-the-art performance on the CIFAR-N data challenge.

15. Kinetic Inductance and Jitter Dependence of the Intrinsic Photon Number Resolution in Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors

Abstract: The ability to resolve photon numbers is crucial in quantum information science and technology, driving the development of detectors with intrinsic photon-number resolving (PNR) capabilities. Although transition edge sensors represent the state-of-the-art in PNR performance, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) offer superior efficiency, speed, noise reduction, and timing precision. Directly inferring photon numbers, however, has only recently become feasible due to advances in readout technology. Despite this, photon-number discrimination remains constrained by the nanowire's electrical properties and readout jitter. In this work, we employ waveguide-integrated SNSPDs and time-resolved measurements to explore how the nanowire kinetic inductance and system jitter affect PNR capabilities. By analyzing the latency time of the photon detection, we can resolve changes in the rising edge of the detection pulse. We find that lower jitter as well as increased kinetic inductance enhances the pulse separation for different photon numbers and improves the PNR capability. Enhancing the kinetic inductance from 165 nH to 872 nH improves PNR quality by 12%, 31% and 23% over the first three photon numbers, though at the cost of reducing the detector's count rate from 165 Mcps to 19 Mcps. 16. Broadband Optoelectronic Mixer for Terahertz Frequency-Comb Measurements

Abstract: We demonstrate ultra-broadband optoelectronic mixing of frequency combs that provides phase-coherent detection of a repetition frequency up to 500 GHz, using a high-speed modified uni-traveling carrier (MUTC) photodiode. Nonlinear photo-electron effects in the photodiode itself enable harmonic generation and down-mixing process of combs with widely different repetition frequency. Specifically, we generate two, 25 GHz frequency combs and use an optical filter to explore coherent down-mixing to baseband of comb spectral components across microwave, millimeter wave, and terahertz (THz) frequencies. The exceptional noise performance of the optoelectronic mixer enables the phase-coherent measurement of millimeter-wave and THz frequency combs with an Allan deviation of 10^-13/t for a measurement time of t. We further investigate the dependence of conversion loss on the reverse bias voltage and photocurrent. The experimental results indicate that we can minimize the conversion loss by operating the photodiode at an optimal voltage and maximum available photocurrent. Our work provides a solution for millimeter-wave and THz frequency comb measurements and facilitates fully stabilized frequency combs with microresonators.

17. Predicting Future Actions of Reinforcement Learning Agents

Abstract: As reinforcement learning agents become increasingly deployed in real-world scenarios, predicting future agent actions and events during deployment is important for facilitating better human-agent interaction and preventing catastrophic outcomes. This paper experimentally evaluates and compares the effectiveness of future action and event prediction for three types of RL agents: explicitly planning, implicitly planning, and non-planning. We employ two approaches: the inner state approach, which involves predicting based on the inner computations of the agents (e.g., plans or neuron activations), and a simulation-based approach, which involves unrolling the agent in a learned world model. Our results show that the plans of explicitly planning agents are significantly more informative for prediction than the neuron activations of the other types. Furthermore, using internal plans proves more robust to model quality compared to simulation-based approaches when predicting actions, while the results for event prediction are more mixed. These findings highlight the benefits of leveraging inner states and simulations to predict future agent actions and events, thereby improving interaction and safety in real-world deployments., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

18. Hybrid quantum-classical approach for combinatorial problems at hadron colliders

Abstract: In recent years, quantum computing has drawn significant interest within the field of high-energy physics. We explore the potential of quantum algorithms to resolve the combinatorial problems in particle physics experiments. As a concrete example, we consider top quark pair production in the fully hadronic channel at the Large Hadron Collider. We investigate the performance of various quantum algorithms such as the Quantum Approximation Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) and a feedback-based algorithm (FALQON). We demonstrate that the efficiency for selecting the correct pairing is greatly improved by utilizing quantum algorithms over conventional kinematic methods. Furthermore, we observe that gate-based universal quantum algorithms perform on par with machine learning techniques and either surpass or match the effectiveness of quantum annealers. Our findings reveal that quantum algorithms not only provide a substantial increase in matching efficiency but also exhibit scalability and adaptability, making them suitable for a variety of high-energy physics applications. 20. Improved separation between quantum and classical computers for sampling and functional tasks

Abstract: This paper furthers existing evidence that quantum computers are capable of computations beyond classical computers. Specifically, we strengthen the collapse of the polynomial hierarchy to the second level if: (i) Quantum computers with postselection are as powerful as classical computers with postselection ($\mathsf{PostBQP=PostBPP}$), (ii) any one of several quantum sampling experiments ($\mathsf{BosonSampling}$, $\mathsf{IQP}$, $\mathsf{DQC1}$) can be approximately performed by a classical computer (contingent on existing assumptions). This last result implies that if any of these experiment's hardness conjectures hold, then quantum computers can implement functions classical computers cannot ($\mathsf{FBQP\neq FBPP}$) unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses to its 2nd level. These results are an improvement over previous work which either achieved a collapse to the third level or were concerned with exact sampling, a physically impractical case. The workhorse of these results is a new technical complexity-theoretic result which we believe could have value beyond quantum computation. In particular, we prove that if there exists an equivalence between problems solvable with an exact counting oracle and problems solvable with an approximate counting oracle, then the polynomial hierarchy collapses to its second level, indeed to $\mathsf{ZPP^{NP}}$.

21. A 34-Year Timing Solution of the Redback Millisecond Pulsar Terzan 5A

Abstract: We present a 34-year timing solution of the redback pulsar system Terzan 5A (Ter5A). Ter5A, also known as B1744$-$24A or J1748$-$2446A, has a 11.56 ms pulse period, a $\sim$0.1 solar mass dwarf companion star, and an orbital period of 1.82 hours. Ter5A displays highly variable eclipses and orbital perturbations. Using new timing techniques, we have determined a phase-connected timing solution for this system over 34 years. This is the longest ever published for a redback pulsar. We find that the pulsar's spin variability is much larger than most globular cluster pulsars. In fact, of the nine redback pulsars with published or in preparation long-term timing solutions, Ter5A is by far the noisiest. We see no evidence of strong correlations between orbital and spin variability of the pulsar. We also find that long-term astrometric timing measurements are likely too contaminated by this variability to be usable, and therefore require careful short-term timing to determine reasonable positions. Finally, we measure an orbital period contraction of $-2.5(3) \times 10^{-13}$, which is likely dominated by the general relativistic orbital decay of the system. The effects of the orbital variability due to the redback nature of the pulsar are not needed to explain the observed orbital period derivative, but they are constrained to less than $\sim$30% of the observed value.

Abstract: Prime-Cam, one of the primary instruments for the Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope (FYST) developed by the CCAT Collaboration, will house up to seven instrument modules, with the first operating at 280 GHz. Each module will include three arrays of superconducting microwave kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs). The first KID array fabricated for the 280 GHz module uses titanium-nitride (TiN) as the superconducting material and has 3,456 individual detectors, while the other two arrays use aluminum. This paper presents the design and laboratory characterization of the 280 GHz TiN array, which is cooled below its critical temperature to ~0.1 K and read out over six RF feedlines. LED mapping, a technique for matching the measured resonant frequency of a detector to its physical position, was performed on the array so that the results can be used to lithographically trim the KID capacitors and increase the yield of the array by reducing frequency collisions. 23. High resolution HI mapping of nearby XMP BCD galaxies

Abstract: Optical observations of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCDs) show they typically have high specific star formation rates and low metallicites. A subset of these galaxies (those with the lowest gas phase metallicities) display cometary optical morphologies similar to those found at high redshift. Whether this combination of properties predominantly arises from interactions with neighbours or accretion from the cosmic web or something else remains unclear. We used high resolution HI mapping to gain insights into the processes driving the observed properties of a sample of extremely metal poor (XMP) BCDs. We present Very Large Array B- and C-configuration HI mapping of four BCDs. For three of the targeted BCDs we also detect and map the HI in their nearby companions. In these three cases there is HI evidence for a recent flyby interaction between the BCD and a nearby companion. The HI evidence for recent interactions for these three BCDs is corroborated by our analysis of the tidal forces exerted on the BCDs by companions with available spectroscopic redshifts. For J0204-1009 we had sufficient spatial resolution to determine that it is dark matter dominated and estimate its DM halo mass to be in the range 1.2 x 10^11 to 5.2 x 10^11 solar masses. It is the most isolated BCD in our small sample, J0301-0052, which shows one of the most asymmetric HI morphologies. J0301-0052 has a similar cometary HI morphology to the BCD's optical morphology, although the HI column density maximum is projected at the end of the of the optical tail. Our HI observations suggest J0301-0052 may be undergoing a merger, while the other BCDs show evidence of a recent tidal interaction with a near neighbour. While our selection criteria favoured BCDs with companions our results are consistent with the earlier finding by other authors that most BCDs are associated with either mild tidal interactions or mergers., Comment: 15 pages with 18 Figures

Abstract: Multimodal information extraction (MIE) is crucial for scientific literature, where valuable data is often spread across text, figures, and tables. In materials science, extracting structured information from research articles can accelerate the discovery of new materials. However, the multimodal nature and complex interconnections of scientific content present challenges for traditional text-based methods. We introduce \textsc{MatViX}, a benchmark consisting of $324$ full-length research articles and $1,688$ complex structured JSON files, carefully curated by domain experts. These JSON files are extracted from text, tables, and figures in full-length documents, providing a comprehensive challenge for MIE. We introduce an evaluation method to assess the accuracy of curve similarity and the alignment of hierarchical structures. Additionally, we benchmark vision-language models (VLMs) in a zero-shot manner, capable of processing long contexts and multimodal inputs, and show that using a specialized model (DePlot) can improve performance in extracting curves. Abstract: Unsupervised skill discovery carries the promise that an intelligent agent can learn reusable skills through autonomous, reward-free environment interaction. Existing unsupervised skill discovery methods learn skills by encouraging distinguishable behaviors that cover diverse states. However, in complex environments with many state factors (e.g., household environments with many objects), learning skills that cover all possible states is impossible, and naively encouraging state diversity often leads to simple skills that are not ideal for solving downstream tasks. This work introduces Skill Discovery from Local Dependencies (Skild), which leverages state factorization as a natural inductive bias to guide the skill learning process. The key intuition guiding Skild is that skills that induce diverse interactions between state factors are often more valuable for solving downstream tasks. To this end, Skild develops a novel skill learning objective that explicitly encourages the mastering of skills that effectively induce different interactions within an environment. We evaluate Skild in several domains with challenging, long-horizon sparse reward tasks including a realistic simulated household robot domain, where Skild successfully learns skills with clear semantic meaning and shows superior performance compared to existing unsupervised reinforcement learning methods that only maximize state coverage.

Abstract: We make absolute frequency measurements of Cs Rydberg transitions, $\vert 6S_{1/2}, F=3 \rangle \rightarrow \vert nS_{1/2}~(n=23\rm{-}90)\rangle$ and $\vert nD_{3/2,5/2}~(n=21\rm{-}90)\rangle$, with an accuracy of less than $ 72\,\rm kHz$. The quantum defect parameters for the measured Rydberg series are the most precise obtained to date. The quantum defect series is terminated at $\delta_4$, showing that prior fits requiring higher order quantum defects reflect uncertainties in the observations. The precision of the measured quantum defects allow for the calculation of Rydberg electric-dipole transitions and fine-structure intervals extrapolated from high principal quantum numbers, to rival that of sophisticated many-body relativistic calculations carried out at low Rydberg principal quantum numbers. We quantitatively predict the contributions to the quantum defect parameters from core polarization and core penetration of Cs inner shell electrons. 29. Conditional diffusions for neural posterior estimation

Abstract: Neural posterior estimation (NPE), a simulation-based computational approach for Bayesian inference, has shown great success in situations where posteriors are intractable or likelihood functions are treated as "black boxes." Existing NPE methods typically rely on normalizing flows, which transform a base distributions into a complex posterior by composing many simple, invertible transformations. But flow-based models, while state of the art for NPE, are known to suffer from several limitations, including training instability and sharp trade-offs between representational power and computational cost. In this work, we demonstrate the effectiveness of conditional diffusions as an alternative to normalizing flows for NPE. Conditional diffusions address many of the challenges faced by flow-based methods. Our results show that, across a highly varied suite of benchmarking problems for NPE architectures, diffusions offer improved stability, superior accuracy, and faster training times, even with simpler, shallower models. These gains persist across a variety of different encoder or "summary network" architectures, as well as in situations where no summary network is required. 30. Crux, a Precise Verifier for Rust and Other Languages

Abstract: We present Crux, a cross-language verification tool for Rust and C/LLVM. Crux targets bounded, intricate pieces of code that are difficult for humans to get right: for example, cryptographic modules and serializer / deserializer pairs. Crux builds on the same framework as the mature SAW-Cryptol toolchain, but Crux provides an interface where proofs are phrased as symbolic unit tests. Crux is designed for use in production environments, and has already seen use in industry. In this paper, we focus on Crux-MIR, our verification tool for Rust. Crux-MIR provides a bit-precise model of safe and unsafe Rust which can be used to check both inline properties about Rust code, and extensional equality to executable specifications written in Cryptol or in the hacspec dialect of Rust. Notably, Crux-MIR supports compositional reasoning, which is necessary to scale to even moderately complex proofs. We demonstrate Crux-MIR by verifying the Ring library implementations of SHA1 and SHA2 against pre-existing functional specifications. Crux is available at https://crux.galois.com.

31. Hall signal-dominated microwave transmission through graphene-loaded waveguides

Abstract: Microwave transmission line spectroscopy is used to observe the integer quantum Hall effect in two samples of monolayer graphene with different geometries that are resistively-coupled to a coplanar waveguide. We find plateaus in transmitted power that do not vary significantly with microwave frequency but are significantly different for two samples due to their shape. With each drop in transmitted power corresponding to an additional quantum Hall edge mode that short the transmission line to ground, these well-known quanta of conductance allow us to calibrate the sensitivity of the devices. One sample with short contact regions matched the sensitivity expected when considering only the quantum Hall conductance of $\nu e^2/h$; another sample with long contact regions demonstrated a nearly three-fold enhancement in sensitivity. We model this result with a purely resistive circuit that introduces an additional resistance to explain the increased sensitivity.

32. Orbit of a Possible Planet X

Abstract: The plausibility of an unseen planet in the outer solar system, and the expected orbit and mass of such a planet, have long been a topic of inquiry and debate. We calculate the long-term orbital stability of distant trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs), which allows us to expand the sample of objects that would carry dynamical information about a hypothetical unseen planet in the outer solar system. Using this expanded sample, we find statistically significant clustering at the $\sim 3 \sigma$ level for TNOs with semimajor axes $>170\mbox{\;AU}$, in longitude of perihelion ($\varpi$), but not in inclination ($i$), argument of perihelion ($\omega$) or longitude of node ($\Omega$). Since a natural explanation for clustering in $\varpi$ is an unseen planet, we run 300 $n$-body simulations with the giant planets, a disk of test particles representing Kuiper belt objects, and an additional planet with varied initial conditions for its mass, semimajor axis, eccentricity, and inclination. Based on the distribution of test particles after 1--2 Gyr, we compute relative likelihoods given the actual distribution of $\varpi$ as a function of semimajor axis for distant TNOs on stable orbits using a significantly larger sample ($N = 51$) than previous work ($N = 11$). We find that the unseen planet parameters that best fit the data are a mass of $m_p = 4.4 \pm 1.1 \mathrm{\; M_{\oplus}}$, a semimajor axis of $a_p = 290 \pm 30 \mathrm{\; AU}$, an eccentricity of $e_p = 0.29 \pm 0.13$, and an inclination of $i_p = 6.8 \pm 5.0^{\circ}$ (all error bars are 1$\sigma$). Only $0.06\%$ of the Brown & Batygin (2021) reference population produce probabilities within $1\sigma$ of the maximum within our quadrivariate model, indicating that our work identifies a distinct preferred region of parameter space for an unseen planet in the solar system. Abstract: The Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton - Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation (CHEX-MATE) is a programme to study a minimally biased sample of 118 galaxy clusters detected by Planck through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. Accurate and precise mass measurements are required to exploit CHEX-MATE as an astrophysical laboratory and a calibration sample for cosmological probes in the era of large surveys. We measured masses based on the galaxy dynamics, which are highly complementary to weak-lensing or X-ray estimates. We analysed the sample with a uniform pipeline that is stable both for poorly sampled or rich clusters - using spectroscopic redshifts from public (NED, SDSS, and DESI) or private archives - and dedicated observational programmes. We modelled the halo mass density and the anisotropy profile. Membership is confirmed with a cleaning procedure in phase space. We derived masses from measured velocity dispersions under the assumed model. We measured dynamical masses for 101 CHEX-MATE clusters with at least ten confirmed members within the virial radius r_200c. Estimated redshifts and velocity dispersions agree with literature values when available. Validation with weak-lensing masses shows agreement within 8+-16(stat.)+-5(sys.)%, and confirms dynamical masses as an unbiased proxy. Comparison with {\it Planck} masses shows them to be biased low by 34+-3(stat.)+-5(sys.)%. 34. Toward path-invariant embeddings for local distance source characterization

Abstract: This work builds on recent advances in foundation models in the language and image domains to explore similar approaches for seismic source characterization. We rely on an architecture called Barlow Twins, borrowed from an understanding of the human visual cortical system and originally envisioned for the image domain and adapt it for learning path invariance in seismic event time series. Our model improves the performance on event characterization tasks such as source discrimination across catalogs by 10-12% and provides more reliable predictive uncertainty estimates. We suggest that dataset scale and diversity more than architecture may determine aspects of the current ceiling on performance. We leverage decision trees, linear models, and visualization to understanding the dependencies in learned representations.

Abstract: Being able to predict battery internal states that are related to battery degradation is a key aspect to improve battery lifetime and performance, enhancing cleaner electric transportation and energy generation. However, most present battery management systems (BMSs) use equivalent-circuit models (ECMs) for state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) estimation. These models are not able to predict these aging-related variables, and therefore, they cannot be used to limit battery degradation. In this paper, we propose a method for electrode-level SOC (eSOC) and electrode-level SOH (eSOH) estimation using an electrode-level ECM (eECM). The method can produce estimates of the states of lithiation (SOL) of both electrodes and update the eSOH parameters to maintain estimation accuracy through the lifetime of the battery. Furthermore, the eSOH parameter estimates are used to obtain degradation mode information, which could be used to improve state estimation, health diagnosis and prognosis. The method was validated in simulation and experimentally.

Abstract: The most prominent of the IRAS debris disk systems, $\alpha$ Lyrae (Vega), at a distance of 7.7 pc, has been observed by both the NIRCam and MIRI instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This paper describes NIRCam coronagraphic observations which have achieved F444W contrast levels of 3$\times10^{-7}$ at 1\arcsec\ (7.7 au), 1$\times10^{-7}$ at 2\arcsec\ (15 au) and few $\times 10^{-8}$ beyond 5\arcsec\ (38 au), corresponding to masses of $<$ 3, 2 and 0.5 MJup for a system age of 700 Myr. Two F444W objects are identified in the outer MIRI debris disk, around 48 au. One of these is detected by MIRI, appears to be extended and has a spectral energy distribution similar to those of distant extragalactic sources. The second one also appears extended in the NIRCam data suggestive of an extragalactic nature.The NIRCam limits within the inner disk (1\arcsec\ --10\arcsec) correspond to a model-dependent masses of 2$\sim$3 \mj. \citet{Su2024} argue that planets larger even 0.3 MJup would disrupt the smooth disk structure seen at MIRI wavelengths. Eight additional objects are found within 60\arcsec\ of Vega, but none has astrometric properties or colors consistent with planet candidates. These observations reach a level consistent with expected Jeans Mass limits. Abstract: We describe observations of low energy excess (LEE) events (background events observed in all light dark matter direct detection calorimeters) and noise in a two-channel silicon athermal phonon detector with 375 meV baseline energy resolution. We measure two distinct LEE populations: ``shared'' multichannel events with a pulse shape consistent with athermal phonon events, and sub-eV events which couple nearly exclusively to a single channel with a significantly faster pulse shape. These ``singles'' are consistent with events occurring within the aluminum athermal phonon collection fins. Similarly, our measured detector noise is higher than the theoretical expectation. 40. Adventures with Grace Hopper AI Super Chip and the National Research Platform

Abstract: The National Science Foundation (NSF) funded National Research Platform (NRP) is a hyper-converged cluster of nationally and globally interconnected heterogeneous computing resources. The dominant computing environment of the NRP is the x86 64 instruction set architecture (ISA), often with graphics processing units (GPUs). Researchers across the nation leverage containers and Kubernetes to execute high-throughput computing (HTC) workloads across the heterogeneous cyberinfrastructure with minimal friction and maximum flexibility. As part of the NSF-funded GP-ENGINE project, we stood up the first server with an NVIDIA Grace Hopper AI Chip (GH200), an alternative ARM ISA, for the NRP. This presents challenges, as containers must be specifically built for ARM versus x86 64. Herein, we describe the challenges encountered, as well as our resulting solutions and some relevant performance benchmarks. We specifically compare the GH200 to A100 for computer vision workloads, within compute nodes in the NRP.

Abstract: We use the Atacama Large sub/Millimetre Array (ALMA) to efficiently observe spectral lines across Bands 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 at high-resolution (0.5" - 0.1") for 16 bright southern Herschel sources at $1.5 < z < 4.2$. With only six and a half hours of observations, we reveal 66 spectral lines in 17 galaxies. These observations detect emission from CO (3-2) to CO(18-17), as well as atomic ([CI](1-0), (2-1), [OI] 145 $\mu$m and [NII] 205 $\mu$m) lines. Additional molecular lines are seen in emission (${\rm H_2O}$ and ${\rm H_2O^+}$) and absorption (OH$^+$ and CH$^+$). The morphologies based on dust continuum ranges from extended sources to strong lensed galaxies with magnifications between 2 and 30. CO line transitions indicate a diverse set of excitation conditions with a fraction of the sources ($\sim 35$%) showcasing dense, warm gas. The resolved gas to star-formation surface densities vary strongly per source, and suggest that the observed diversity of dusty star-forming galaxies could be a combination of lensed, compact dusty starbursts and extended, potentially-merging galaxies. The predicted gas depletion timescales are consistent with 100 Myr to 1 Gyr, but require efficient fueling from the extended gas reservoirs onto the more central starbursts, in line with the Doppler-shifted absorption lines that indicate inflowing gas for two out of six sources. This pilot paper explores a successful new method of observing spectral lines in large samples of galaxies, supports future studies of larger samples, and finds that the efficiency of this new observational method will be further improved with the planned ALMA Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 42 pages, including 20 figures + spectra. 42. Optimising the Processing and Storage of Visibilities using lossy compression

Abstract: The next-generation radio astronomy instruments are providing a massive increase in sensitivity and coverage, through increased stations in the array and frequency span. Two primary problems encountered when processing the resultant avalanche of data are the need for abundant storage and I/O. An example of this is the data deluge expected from the SKA Telescopes of more than 60PB per day, all to be stored on the buffer filesystem. Compressing the data is an obvious solution. We used MGARD, an error-controlled compressor, and applied it to simulated and real visibility data, in noise-free and noise-dominated regimes. As the data has an implicit error level in the system temperature, using an error bound in compression provides a natural metric for compression. Measuring the degradation of images reconstructed using the lossy compressed data, we explore the trade-off between these error bounds and the corresponding compression ratios, as well as the impact on science quality derived from the lossy compressed data products through a series of experiments. We studied the global and local impacts on the output images. We found relative error bounds of as much as $10\%$, which provide compression ratios of about 20, have a limited impact on the continuum imaging as the increased noise is less than the image RMS. For extremely sensitive observations and for very precious data, we would recommend a $0.1\%$ error bound with compression ratios of about 4. These have noise impacts two orders of magnitude less than the image RMS levels. At these levels, the limits are due to instabilities in the deconvolution methods. We compared the results to the alternative compression tool DYSCO. 45. Intrinsic bulk viscosity of the one-component plasma

Abstract: Intrinsic bulk viscosity of the one-component plasma (OCP) is computed and analyzed using equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and the Green-Kubo formalism. It is found that bulk viscosity exhibits a maximum at $\Gamma \approx 1$, corresponding to the condition that the average kinetic energy of particles equals the potential energy at the average inter-particle spacing. The weakly coupled and strongly coupled limits are analyzed and used to construct a model that captures the full range of coupling strengths simulated: $\Gamma \approx 10^{-2} - 10^2$. Simulations are also run of the Yukawa one-component plasma (YOCP) in order to understand the impact of electron screening. It is found that electron screening leads to a smaller bulk viscosity due to a reduction in the excess heat capacity of the system. Bulk viscosity is shown to be at least an order of magnitude smaller than shear viscosity in both the OCP and YOCP. The generalized frequency-dependent bulk viscosity coefficient is also analyzed. This is found to exhibit a peak near twice the plasma frequency in strongly coupled conditions, which is associated with the oscillatory decay observed in the bulk viscosity autocorrelation function. The generalized shear and bulk viscosity coefficients are found to have a similar magnitude for $\omega \gtrsim 2\omega_p$ at strongly coupled conditions.

In this review, we outline the history of our understanding of the Magellanic System highlighting key observations that have revolutionized thinking of its evolution. Abstract: We introduce Controller-Embedded Language Model Interactions (CELI), a framework that integrates control logic directly within language model (LM) prompts, facilitating complex, multi-stage task execution. CELI addresses limitations of existing prompt engineering and workflow optimization techniques by embedding control logic directly within the operational context of language models, enabling dynamic adaptation to evolving task requirements. Our framework transfers control from the traditional programming execution environment to the LMs, allowing them to autonomously manage computational workflows while maintaining seamless interaction with external systems and functions. CELI supports arbitrary function calls with variable arguments, bridging the gap between LMs' adaptive reasoning capabilities and conventional software paradigms' structured control mechanisms. To evaluate CELI's versatility and effectiveness, we conducted case studies in two distinct domains: code generation (HumanEval benchmark) and multi-stage content generation (Wikipedia-style articles). The results demonstrate notable performance improvements across a range of domains. CELI achieved a 4.9 percentage point improvement over the best reported score of the baseline GPT-4 model on the HumanEval code generation benchmark. In multi-stage content generation, 94.4% of CELI-produced Wikipedia-style articles met or exceeded first draft quality when optimally configured, with 44.4% achieving high quality. 48. Transfer Reinforcement Learning in Heterogeneous Action Spaces using Subgoal Mapping

Abstract: In this paper, we consider a transfer reinforcement learning problem involving agents with different action spaces. Specifically, for any new unseen task, the goal is to use a successful demonstration of this task by an expert agent in its action space to enable a learner agent learn an optimal policy in its own different action space with fewer samples than those required if the learner was learning on its own. Existing transfer learning methods across different action spaces either require handcrafted mappings between those action spaces provided by human experts, which can induce bias in the learning procedure, or require the expert agent to share its policy parameters with the learner agent, which does not generalize well to unseen tasks. In this work, we propose a method that learns a subgoal mapping between the expert agent policy and the learner agent policy. Since the expert agent and the learner agent have different action spaces, their optimal policies can have different subgoal trajectories. We learn this subgoal mapping by training a Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) network for a distribution of tasks and then use this mapping to predict the learner subgoal sequence for unseen tasks, thereby improving the speed of learning by biasing the agent's policy towards the predicted learner subgoal sequence. Through numerical experiments, we demonstrate that the proposed learning scheme can effectively find the subgoal mapping underlying the given distribution of tasks. Moreover, letting the learner agent imitate the expert agent's policy with the learnt subgoal mapping can significantly improve the sample efficiency and training time of the learner agent in unseen new tasks.

49. Inverse Reinforcement Learning from Non-Stationary Learning Agents

Abstract: In this paper, we study an inverse reinforcement learning problem that involves learning the reward function of a learning agent using trajectory data collected while this agent is learning its optimal policy. To address this problem, we propose an inverse reinforcement learning method that allows us to estimate the policy parameters of the learning agent which can then be used to estimate its reward function. Our method relies on a new variant of the behavior cloning algorithm, which we call bundle behavior cloning, and uses a small number of trajectories generated by the learning agent's policy at different points in time to learn a set of policies that match the distribution of actions observed in the sampled trajectories. We then use the cloned policies to train a neural network model that estimates the reward function of the learning agent. We provide a theoretical analysis to show a complexity result on bound guarantees for our method that beats standard behavior cloning as well as numerical experiments for a reinforcement learning problem that validate the proposed method.

Abstract: There are expected to be millions of isolated black holes in the Galaxy resulting from the death of massive stars. Measuring the abundance and properties of this remnant population would shed light on the end stages of stellar evolution and the evolution paths of black hole systems. Detecting isolated black holes is currently only possible via gravitational microlensing which has so far yielded one definitive detection. The difficulty in finding microlensing black holes lies in having to choose a small subset of events based on characteristics of their lightcurves to allocate expensive and scarce follow-up resources to confirm the identity of the lens. Current methods either rely on simple cuts in parameter space without using the full distribution information or are only effective on a small subsets of events. In this paper we present a new lens classification method. The classifier takes in posterior constraints on lightcurve parameters and combines them with a Galactic simulation to estimate the lens class probability. This method is flexible and can be used with any set of microlensing lightcurve parameters making it applicable to large samples of events. We make this classification framework available via the popclass python package. We apply the classifier to $\sim10,000$ microlensing events from the OGLE survey and find $23$ high-probability black hole candidates. Our classifier also suggests that the only known isolated black hole is an observational outlier according to current Galactic models and allocation of astrometric follow-up on this event was a high-risk strategy., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures.
