Abstract

This technical report considers worst-case robustness analysis of a network of locally controlled uncertain systems with uncertain parameter vectors belonging to the ellipsoid sets found by identification procedures. In order to deal with computational complexity of large-scale systems, an hierarchical robustness analysis approach is adapted to these uncertain parameter vectors thus addressing the trade-off between the computation time and the conservatism of the obtained result.

2. Convex LMI optimization for the uncertain power flow analysis

Abstract

This paper investigates the uncertain power flow analysis in distribution networks within the context of renewable power resources integration such as wind and solar power. The analysis aims to bound the worst-case voltage magnitude in any node of the network for a given uncertain power generation scenario. The major difficulty of this problem is the non-linear aspect of power flow equations. The proposed approach does not require the linearization of these equations and formulates the problem as an optimization problem with polynomial constraints. A new tool to investigate the feasibility of such problems is presented and it is obtained as an extension of the $\mathcal{S}-$procedure, a fundamental result in robustness analysis. A solution to the uncertain power flow analysis problem is proposed using this new tool. The different obtained results of this paper are expressed as LMI optimization problems which guaranties an efficient numerical resolution as it will be demonstrated through an illustrative example.

3. Consensus analysis of large-scale nonlinear homogeneous multi-agent formations with polynomial dynamics

Abstract

Drawing inspiration from the theory of linear "decomposable systems", we provide a method, based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which makes it possible to prove the convergence (or consensus) of a set of interacting agents with polynomial dynamic. We also show that the use of a generalised version of the famous Kalman-Yakubovic-Popov lemma allows the development of an LMI test whose size does not depend on the number of agents. 4. Incremental analysis of nonlinear systems with efficient methods for piecewise-affine systems

Abstract

This paper is concerned with incremental stability properties of nonlinear systems. We propose conditions to compute an upper bound on the incremental L2-gain and to assess incremental asymptotic stability of piecewise-affine (PWA) systems. The conditions are derived from dissipativity analysis, and are based on the construction of piecewise-quadratic functions via linear matrix inequalities (LMI) that can be efficiently solved numerically. The developments are shown to be less conservative than previous results, and are illustrated with numerical examples. In the last part of this paper, we study the connection between incremental L2-gain stability and incremental asymptotic stability. It is shown that, with appropriate observability and reachability assumptions on the input-output operator, incremental L2-gain implies incremental asymptotic stability. Finally, it is shown that the converse implication follows provided some regularity conditions on the state space representation are met.

5. Incremental stability of Lur'e systems through piecewise-affine approximations

Abstract

Lur'e-type nonlinear systems are virtually ubiquitous in applied control theory, which explains the great interest they have attracted throughout the years. The purpose of this paper is to propose conditions to assess incremental asymptotic stability of Lur'e systems that are less conservative than those obtained with the incremental circle criterion. The method is based on the approximation of the nonlinearity by a piecewise-affine function. The Lur'e system can then be rewritten as a so-called piecewise-affine Lur'e system, for which sufficient conditions for asymptotic incremental stability are provided. These conditions are expressed as linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) allowing the construction of a continuous piecewise-quadratic incremental Lyapunov function, which can be efficiently solved numerically. The results are illustrated with numerical examples.

17. Nonlinear Automatic Gain Control MEMS Analysis

Abstract

This paper focuses on the analysis of the nonlinear automatic gain control (NAGC) in order to make a mass oscillate at its natural frequency with a specified amplitude. Despite their widespread use in Micro Electro Mechanical Sensor gyroscopes, ensuring the stability of this oscillation remains challenging. In this paper, we investigate the stability of two versions of the NAGC: an ideal and an implementable one, using appropriate change of variables and transverse contraction criterion from orbital stability theory. The results are validated through a numerical example obtained from a real gyroscope system.

En réponse aux enjeux actuels, des méthodes scientifiques puissantes ont été développées pour gérer une telle complexité. La maîtrise de ces méthodes devient de plus en plus incontournable dans la pratique de l'ingénieur quel que soit le domaine auquel il se destine.L'objectif de cet enseignement est de présenter les bases préalables à l'acquisition et à la maîtrise de ces méthodes et de les illustrer par leur application.

This paper concerns the incremental L2-gain stability of piecewise-affine (PWA) systems. We propose sufficient conditions derived from dissipativity theory to compute an upper bound on the incremental L2-gain. This is achieved by constructing piecewise-polynomial storage functions through the use of sum of squares (SOS) relaxations. The constraints are expressed as linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which can be solved numerically in an efficient way. The proposed conditions are verified to be less conservative than previous results found in the literature by means of a numerical example.

International audience; This paper concerns the simulation of a class of nonlinear discrete-time systems under a set of initial conditions described by a bounding ellipsoid. We derive a procedure allowing the propagation of such ellipsoids through time, which makes it possible to set a guaranteed hard bound on the evolution of the state of the system for all the possible initial conditions. Two versions of this procedure are given, the second of which is slightly less general but less computationally demanding. Abstract

International audience; The objective of this paper is to motivate the design of Radio Frequency (RF) analog filters under the LFT framework. Current increase in filter complexity makes traditional design methods outdated. New methods need then to be developed to tackle this issue. The Linear Fractional Transformation (LFT) is a general tool enabling to represent, analyse and synthesize interconnected systems. Coupling with the so-called KYP lemma, and its extensions, it allows to transpose complex analytical optimization problem into a finite dimensional convex problem under Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) constraints. That is to say a problem which is optimally and efficiently solvable. All through this paper, illustrations are provided on how using the LFT framework for LC filter design. Finally, potential benefits of such an approach are enumerated, which are mainly based on the generic property of the LFT.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents a new method to compute upper and lower bounds of any voltage or current of an arbitrary linear electric circuit model with uncertain parameters. The bounds are in the frequency domain, and when compared to a previously proposed method, this novel approach provides a higher level of guarantee. The reason is that the bounds are not only computed for a set of fixed frequencies but also computed to a set of intervals of frequencies. The details of the proposed approach, especially the equivalent uncertain element models, are given. Additionally, tests are performed on problems with low and high number of uncertain parameters. Contrary to the classical method of Monte Carlo, the results are not based on a random choice of parameters and do not depend on the number of iterations. It is shown on an example that the classical method of Monte Carlo needs a high number of iterations to reach results in agreement with the proposed method. Then, it leads to higher computation times of several orders of magnitude.

Abstract

International audience; This paper concerns the simulation of a class of nonlinear continuous-time systems under a set of initial conditions described by an ellipsoid. By getting inspiration from Lyapunov theory, we show that it is possible to derive a procedure allowing the computation of a bounding ellipsoidal envelope which will enclose all the states that can be reached from the set of initial conditions. This numerical procedure is based on convex optimisation, and it makes it possible to set a guaranteed hard bound on the evolution of the state of the system for all the possible initial conditions. At the end of the paper, we show an application of the method through an academic example.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we are interested in the incremental stability of piecewise-affine (PWA) systems. We present conditions to compute an upper bound on the incremental L-2-gain based on dissipativity analysis. These conditions are expressed as linear matrix inequalities (LMI) allowing the construction of a continuous piecewise quadratic storage function. It is also shown that these conditions imply incremental asymptotic stability of the system. The result is illustrated with numerical examples.

Abstract

Summary: The problem of assuring the asymptotic stability of a pulse width modulation (PMW) control scheme is a classical topic in control engineering, where a continuous‐time control signal is approximated by a piecewise constant signal. This paper proposes a general framework that either shows the local asymptotic stability of the closed‐loop PWM system or proves the convergence of the state to an invariant set, which is the case in the presence of limit cycles. The proposed method is based on a piecewise affine representation of the closed‐loop system in discrete time, and it uses semidefinite programming both to find a Lyapunov‐like function and to determine an estimate of the region of attraction. This is an important feature since the desired continuous‐time control action at some instants may be larger than the magnitude of the PWM signals, leading to saturation of the applied control action, a well‐known source of performance degradation and even instability. Two academic examples of applications are shown, in the domain of spacecraft positioning control and electric direct current (DC) motor servoing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

La notion de robustesse occupe une place importante dans la conception des systèmes. Un système est dit robuste s'il est possible de garantir son bon comportement dynamique malgré les dispersions de ses caractéristiques lors de sa fabrication, les variations de l'environnement ou encore son vieillissement. La recherche de la robustesse a motivé l'introduction de boucles de rétroaction dans les systèmes : elles présentent l'intérêt majeur d'assurer un comportement invariant global du système malgré de fortes dispersions de ses composants. Cette propriété remarquable est intensivement exploitée en Automatique pour la conception de systèmes de commande. Si cette propriété a commencé à être exploitée depuis quelques décennies, ce n'est que récemment que des outils quantitatifs ont été développés tirant profit du développement de la puissance de calcul des ordinateurs et des avancées récentes en Optimisation notamment sous contrainte LMI.L'objectif de ce cours est de présenter l’analyse des incertitudes, structurées ou non structurées, avec des illustrations sur la conception des systèmes mais aussi sur leur analyse, c'est-à-dire sur la validation d'un cahier des charges pour un système. Le développement de cette démarche correspond aux exigences industrielles actuelles de la recherche du meilleur compromis possible d'un cahier des charges. Il présente aussi une introduction à l’optimisation LMI qui est devenue ces dernières années un des outils numériques de l’Automatique.

Abstract

In this report, the problem of robust performance analysis of interconnected uncertain systems with hierarchical structure is considered. The computational load associated to such problems does not allow a direct application of robustness analysis usual tools. To overcome this difficulty, we exploit the hierarchical structure of the problem and propose an algorithm to perform robust-ness analysis using IQC " propagation " along the hierarchical structure. This algorithm allows to establish a trade-off between computation time required to perform the analysis and the conservatism of the obtained results. Furthermore, it is easy to perform parallel computation using the proposed algorithm.
