Abstract

Venus' atmosphere -- specifically its clouds buoyed up 40 to 60 km above the surface -- has long been suspected to encompass a biosphere where Earth-like living organisms could grow and flourish. This idea has been recently rekindled by the observation (signal-to-noise ratio of about 15$\sigma$) of a phosphine (PH$_3$) absorption-line profile against the thermal background from deeper, hotter layers of the atmosphere. There is a chance that this observation could be a sign of life, because the PH$_3$ gas observed on Earth originates mostly in decaying organic material. Furthermore, it has been shown that there is no other natural process on Venus that could otherwise produce the observed PH$_3$ absorption line. On the other hand, cosmic rays and the particle cascades they produce in the Earth's atmosphere are hazardous to living organisms, because the ionizing radiation produced in air showers can blow apart chemical molecules and disrupt biochemical processes, causing cells to die or undergo dangerous mutations. Compared to Earth, the hypothesized biosphere of Venus could be exposed to substantially more ionizing radiation. This is because Venus has no protective intrinsic magnetic field, orbits closer to the Sun, and the entire eventual habitable region lies in the clouds high in the atmosphere. Thereby, if the clouds were sterilized there would be no reservoir of deeper life that can recolonize afterwards. In this communication we study the effects of particle cascades in the venusian atmosphere using the AIRES simulation package properly configured. 2. Gauging the cosmic ray muon puzzle with the Forward Physics Facility

Abstract

We investigate the observed muon deficit in air shower simulations when compared to ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) data. Gleaned from the observed enhancement of strangeness production in ALICE data, the associated $\pi \leftrightarrow K$ swap is taken as a cornerstone to resolve the muon puzzle via its corresponding impact on the shower evolution. We develop a phenomenological model in terms of the $\pi \leftrightarrow K$ swapping probability $F_s$. We provide a parametrization of $F_s (E^{\rm (proj)}, \eta)$ that can accommodate the UHECR data, where $E^{\rm (proj)}$ is the projectile energy and $\eta$ the pseudorapidity. We also explore a future game plan for model improvement using the colossal amount of data to be collected by LHC neutrino detectors at the Forward Physics Facility (FPF). 3. Ultra-peripheral collisions of charged hadrons in extensive air showers

Abstract

We discuss the electromagnetic collisions of high energy protons, pions and kaons with atmospheric nuclei. In particular, we use the equivalent photon approximation to estimate (i) the diffractive collisions where the projectile scatters inelastically off a nucleus, and (ii) the usual radiative processes (bremsstrahlung, pair production and photonuclear interactions) of these charged hadrons in the air. We then include the processes in the simulator AIRES and study how they affect the longitudinal development of extensive air showers. For $10^{9-11}$ GeV proton primaries we find that they introduce a very small reduction (below 1%) in the average value of both $X_{\rm max}$ and $\Delta X_{\rm max}$. At a given shower age (relative slant depth from $X_{\rm max}$), these electromagnetic processes slightly increase the number of charged particles at the shower maximum and reduce the number of muons when it is old, decreasing by 1% the muon-to-($\gamma+e$) near the ground level. the muon-to-(${\gamma} + e$) near the ground level., Comment: Version published in JCAP

Abstract

Cosmic Probes of Fundamental Physics take two primary forms: Very high energy particles (cosmic rays, neutrinos, and gamma rays) and gravitational waves. Already today, these probes give access to fundamental physics not available by any other means, helping elucidate the underlying theory that completes the Standard Model. The last decade has witnessed a revolution of exciting discoveries such as the detection of high-energy neutrinos and gravitational waves. Abstract

High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe Standard Model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. We report here on these physics topics, on infrastructure, detector, and simulation studies, and on future directions to realize the FPF's physics potential., Comment: 429 pages, contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

We investigate the observed muon deficit in air shower simulations when compared to ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) data. Based upon the observed enhancement of strangeness production in high-energy hadronic collisions reported by the ALICE Collaboration, the concomitant $\pi \leftrightarrow K$ swap is considered as the keystone to resolve the muon anomaly through its corresponding impact on the shower development. We construct a toy model in terms of the $\pi \leftrightarrow K$ swapping probability $F_s$. We present a parametrization of $F_s$ in terms of the pseudorapidity that can accommodate the UHECR data. Looking to the future, we explore potential strategies for model improvement using the massive amounts of data to be collected by LHC neutrino detectors, such as FASER$\nu$ and experiments at the Forward Physics Facility. 7. Through the Looking-Glass with ALICE into the Quark-Gluon Plasma: A New Test for Hadronic Interaction Models Used in Air Shower Simulations

Abstract

Recently, the ALICE Collaboration reported an enhancement of the yield ratio of strange and multi-strange hadrons to charged pions as a function of multiplicity at mid-rapidity in proton-proton, proton-lead, lead-lead, and xenon-xenon scattering. ALICE observations provide a strong indication that a quark-gluon plasma is partly formed in high multiplicity events of both small and large colliding systems. Motivated by ALICE's results, we propose a new test for hadronic interaction models used for analyzing ultra-high-energy-cosmic-ray (UHECR) collisions with air nuclei. The test is grounded in the almost equal column-energy density in UHECR-air collisions and lead-lead collisions at the LHC. We applied the test to post-LHC event generators describing hadronic phenomena of UHECR scattering and show that these QCD Monte Carlo-based codes must be retuned to accommodate the strangeness enhancement relative to pions observed in LHC data., Comment: Matching version to be published in PLB

10. Hunting long-lived gluinos at the Pierre Auger Observatory

Abstract

Eventual signals of split sypersymmetry in cosmic ray physics are analyzed in detail. The study focusses particularly on quasi-stable colorless R-hadrons originating through confinement of long-lived gluinos (with quarks, anti-quarks, and gluons) produced in pp collisions at astrophysical sources. Because of parton density requirements, the gluino has a momentum which is considerable smaller than the energy of the primary proton, and so production of heavy (mass ~ 500 GeV) R-hadrons requires powerful cosmic ray engines able to accelerate particles up to extreme energies, somewhat above 10^{13.6} GeV. Using a realistic Monte Carlo simulation with the AIRES engine, we study the main characteristics of the air showers triggered when one of these exotic hadrons impinges on a stationary nucleon of the Earth atmosphere. We show that R-hadron air showers present clear differences with respect to those initiated by standard particles. We use this shower characteristics to construct observables which may be used to distinguish long-lived gluinos at the Pierre Auger Observatory., Comment: 13 pages revtex, 9 eps figures. 11. Neural Networks as a Composition Diagnostic for Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Rays

Abstract

We analyze here the possibility of studying mass composition in the Auger data sample using neural networks as a diagnostic tool. Extensive air showers were simulated using the AIRES code, for the two hadronic interaction models in current use: QGSJet and Sibyll. Both, photon and hadron primaries were simulated and used to generate events. The output parameters from the ground array were simulated for the typical instrumental and environmental conditions at the Malarg\"ue Auger site using the code SAMPLE. Besides photons, hydrogen, helium, carbon, oxygen, magnesium, silicon, calcium and iron nuclei were also simulated. We show that Principal Components Analysis alone is enough to separate individual photon from hadron events, but the same technique cannot be applied to the classification of hadronic events. The latter requires the use of a more robust diagnostic. We show that neural networks are potentially powerful enough to discriminate proton from iron events almost on an event-by-event basis. However, in the case of a more realistic multi-component mixture of primary nuclei, only a statistical estimate of the average mass can be reliably obtained. Although hybrid events are not explicitly simulated, we show that, whenever hybrid information in the form of $X_{max}$ is introduced in the training procedure of the neural networks, a considerable improvement can be achieved in mass discrimination analysis., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figues, Submited to Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

Abstract

High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe standard model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. We report here on these physics topics, on infrastructure, detector, and simulation studies, and on future directions to realize the FPF's physics potential.

Abstract

We present a detailed analysis of various aspects around the design, execution and results evaluation of a classroom strategy for teaching Contemporary Physics topics at the intermediate level. This experience was carried out with a group of high school seniors in Bogotó, Colombia, addressing the issue of superconductivity. Using the pedagogical approach of Teaching for Understanding, a class plan of theoretical and experimental activities was designed with the aim of understanding the phenomenon of superconductivity together with different related concepts of classical and contemporary physics, and of current technological advances and social implications that the development of science brings in different world contexts. Abstract

Cosmic Probes of Fundamental Physics take two primary forms: Very high energy particles (cosmic rays, neutrinos, and gamma rays) and gravitational waves. Already today, these probes give access to fundamental physics not available by any other means, helping elucidate the underlying theory that completes the Standard Model. The last decade has witnessed a revolution of exciting discoveries such as the detection of high-energy neutrinos and gravitational waves.
