Experimental measurements of plasma and neutral profiles across the pedestal are used in conjunction with 2D edge modeling to examine pedestal stiffness in Alcator C-Mod H-mode plasmas. Experiments on Alcator C-Mod observed pedestal degradation and loss in confinement below a critical value of net power crossing the separatrix, $P_\mathrm{net} = P_\mathrm{net}^\mathrm{crit} \approx 2.3$ MW. New analysis of ionization and particle flux profiles reveal saturation of the pedestal electron density, $n_{e}^\mathrm{ped}$ despite continuous increases in ionization throughout the pedestal, inversely related to $P_\mathrm{net}$. A limit to the pedestal $\nabla n_{e}$ emerges as the particle flux, $\Gamma_{D}$ continues to grow, implying increases in the effective particle diffusivity, $D_\mathrm{eff}$. This is well-correlated with the separatrix collisionality, $\nu^{*}_\mathrm{sep}$ and a turbulence control parameter, $\alpha_{t}$, implying a possible transition in type of turbulence. The transition is well correlated with the experimentally observed value of $P_\mathrm{net}^\mathrm{crit}$. SOLPS-ITER modeling is performed for select discharges from the power scan, constrained with experimental electron and neutral densities, measured at the outer midplane. The modeling confirms general growth in $D_\mathrm{eff}$, consistent with experimental findings, and additionally suggests even larger growth in $\chi_{e}$ at the same $P_\mathrm{net}^\mathrm{crit}$.

In recent years, negative triangularity (NT) has emerged as a potential high-confinement L-mode reactor solution. In this work, detachment is investigated using core density ramps in lower single null Ohmic L-mode plasmas across a wide range of upper, lower, and average triangularity (the mean of upper and lower triangularity: $\delta$) in the TCV tokamak. It is universally found that detachment is more difficult to access for NT shaping. The outer divertor leg of discharges with $\delta\approx -0.3$ could not be cooled to below $5~\mathrm{eV}$ through core density ramps alone. The behavior of the upstream plasma and geometrical divertor effects (e.g. a reduced connection length with negative lower triangularity) do not fully explain the challenges in detaching NT plasmas. Langmuir probe measurements of the target heat flux widths ($\lambda_q$) were constant to within 30% across an upper triangularity scan, while the spreading factor $S$ was lower by up to 50% for NT, indicating a generally lower integral Scrape-Off Layer width, $\lambda_{int}$. The line-averaged core density was typically higher for NT discharges for a given fuelling rate, possibly linked to higher particle confinement in NT. Conversely, the divertor neutral pressure and integrated particle fluxes to the targets were typically lower for the same line-averaged density, indicating that NT configurations may be closer to the sheath-limited regime than their PT counterparts, which may explain why NT is more challenging to detach.

We simulate the assembly of DNA copolymers from two types of short duplexes (short double strands with a single-stranded overhang at each end), as described by the oxDNA model. We find that the statistics of chain lengths can be well reproduced by a simple theory that treats the association of particles into ideal (i.e., non-interacting) clusters as a reversible chemical reaction. The reaction constants can be predicted either from Santalucia's theory or from Wertheim's thermodynamic perturbation theory of association for spherical patchy particles. Our results suggest that theories incorporating very limited molecular detail may be useful for predicting the broad equilibrium features of copolymerisation., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures. We present experimental inferences of cross-field impurity transport coefficients for Alcator C-Mod plasmas using a novel forward model for the entire Ca K-alpha spectrum, including satellite lines within the spectral range, to compare to high-resolution X-ray Imaging Crystal Spectroscopy (XICS). These measurements are complemented by Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) spectroscopy that constrains transport closer to the edge. Using new atomic data sets for both XICS and EUV analysis has enabled consideration of line ratios across both spectral ranges and has increased the accuracy of inferred transport coefficients. Inclusion of charge exchange between edge thermal neutrals and impurities is shown to be extremely important in C-Mod pedestals. We obtain D atomic neutral densities from experimental D Ly-alpha measurements at the midplane and compare these to SOLPS-ITER simulations, finding good agreement. Bayesian inferences of impurity transport coefficients are presented for L-, EDA H-, and I-mode discharges, making use of the Aurora package for forward modeling and combining our spectroscopic constraints. Experimentally inferred diffusion profiles are found to match turbulent transport models at midradius within uncertainties, using both quasilinear gyro-fluid TGLF SAT-1 and nonlinear ion-scale gyrokinetic CGYRO simulations. We present Aurora, an open-source package for particle transport, neutrals and radiation modeling in magnetic confinement fusion plasmas. Aurora's modern multi-language interface enables simulations of 1.5D impurity transport within high-performance computing frameworks, particularly for the inference of particle transport coefficients. A user-friendly Python library allows simple interaction with atomic rates from the Atomic Data and Atomic Structure database as well as other sources. This enables a range of radiation predictions, both for power balance and spectroscopic analysis. We discuss here the superstaging approximation for complex ions, as a way to group charge states and reduce computational cost, demonstrating its wide applicability within the Aurora forward model and beyond. Aurora also facilitates neutral particle analysis, both from experimental spectroscopic data and other simulation codes. Leveraging Aurora's capabilities to interface SOLPS-ITER results, we demonstrate that charge exchange is unlikely to affect the total radiated power from the ITER core during high performance operation. Finally, we describe the ImpRad module in the OMFIT framework, developed to enable experimental analysis and transport inferences on multiple devices using Aurora., Comment: 8 pages + references, 5 figures

We present a fully Bayesian approach for the inference of radial profiles of impurity transport coefficients and compare its results to neoclassical, gyrofluid and gyrokinetic modeling. Using nested sampling, the Bayesian Impurity Transport InferencE (BITE) framework can handle complex parameter spaces with multiple possible solutions, offering great advantages in interpretative power and reliability with respect to previously demonstrated methods. BITE employs a forward model based on the pySTRAHL package, built on the success of the well-known STRAHL code [Dux, IPP Report, 2004], to simulate impurity transport in magnetically-confined plasmas. In this paper, we focus on calcium (Ca, Z=20) Laser Blow-Off injections into Alcator C-Mod plasmas. Multiple Ca atomic lines are diagnosed via high-resolution X-ray Imaging Crystal Spectroscopy and Vacuum Ultra-Violet measurements. We analyze a sawtoothing I-mode discharge for which neoclassical and turbulent (quasilinear and nonlinear) predictions are also obtained. We find good agreement in diffusion across the entire radial extent, while turbulent convection and density profile peaking are estimated to be larger in experiment than suggested by theory. Advancements in high temperature superconducting technology have opened a path toward high-field, compact fusion devices. This new parameter space introduces both opportunities and challenges for diagnosis of the plasma. This paper presents a physics review of a neutron diagnostic suite for a SPARC-like tokamak [Greenwald et al 2018 doi:10.7910/DVN/OYYBNU]. A notional neutronics model was constructed using plasma parameters from a conceptual device, called the MQ1 (Mission $Q \geq 1$) tokamak. The suite includes time-resolved micro-fission chamber (MFC) neutron flux monitors, energy-resolved radial and tangential magnetic proton recoil (MPR) neutron spectrometers, and a neutron camera system (radial and off-vertical) for spatially-resolved measurements of neutron emissivity. Geometries of the tokamak, neutron source, and diagnostics were modeled in the Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code MCNP6 to simulate expected signal and background levels of particle fluxes and energy spectra. From these, measurements of fusion power, neutron flux and fluence are feasible by the MFCs, and the number of independent measurements required for 95% confidence of a fusion gain $Q \geq 1$ is assessed. The MPR spectrometer is found to consistently overpredict the ion temperature and also have a 1000$\times$ improved detection of alpha knock-on neutrons compared to previous experiments. The deuterium-tritium fuel density ratio, however, is measurable in this setup only for trace levels of tritium, with an upper limit of $n_T/n_D \approx 6\%$, motivating further diagnostic exploration. Finally, modeling suggests that in order to adequately measure the self-heating profile, the neutron camera system will require energy and pulse-shape discrimination to suppress otherwise overwhelming fluxes of low energy neutrons and gamma radiation. *Co-first-authorship

We study the effective interaction between differently charged polyelectrolyte-colloid complexes in electrolyte solutions via Monte Carlo simulations. These complexes are formed when short and flexible polyelectrolyte chains adsorb onto oppositely charged colloidal spheres, dispersed in an electrolyte solution. In our simulations the bending energy between adjacent monomers is small compared to the electrostatic energy, and the chains, once adsorbed, do not exchange with the solution, although they rearrange on the particles surface to accomodate further adsorbing chains or due to the electrostatic interaction with neighbor complexes. Rather unexpectedly, when two interacting particles approach each others, the rearrangement of the surface charge distribution invariably produces anti-parallel dipolar doublets, that invert their orientation at the isoelectric point. These findings clearly rule out a contribution of dipole-dipole interactions to the observed attractive interaction between the complexes, pointing out that such suspensions can not be considered dipolar fluids. On varying the ionic strength of the electrolyte, we find that a screening length, short compared with the size of the colloidal particles, is required in order to observe the attraction between like charged complexes due to the non-uniform distribution of the electric charge on their surface ('patch attraction'). On the other hand, by changing the polyelectrolyte/particle charge ratio, the interaction between like-charged polyelectrolyte-decorated (pd) particles, at short separations, evolves from purely repulsive to strongly attractive. Hence, the effective interaction between the complexes is characterized by a potential barrier, whose height depends on the net charge and on the non-uniformity of their surface charge distribution., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures

We investigate nanoflows through dilute disordered media by means of joint lattice Boltzmann (LB) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations -- when the size of the obstacles is comparable to the size of the flowing particles -- for randomly located spheres and for a correlated particle-gel. In both cases at sufficiently low solid fraction, $\Phi<0.01$, LB and MD provide similar values of the permeability. However, for $\Phi > 0.01$, MD shows that molecular size effects lead to a decrease of the permeability, as compared to the Navier-Stokes predictions. For gels, the simulations highlights a surplus of permeability, which can be accommodated within a rescaling of the effective radius of the gel monomers., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Polymer chains adsorbed onto oppositely charged spherical colloidal particles can significantly modify the particle-particle interactions. For sufficient amounts of added polymers, the original electrostatic repulsion can even turn into an effective attraction and relatively large kinetically stable aggregates can form which display several unexpected and interesting peculiarities and some intriguing biotechnological implications. The attractive interaction contribution between two oppositely particles arises from the correlated adsorption of polyions at the oppositely charged particle surfaces, resulting in a non-homogeneous surface charge distribution. Here, we investigate the aggregation kinetics of polyion-induced colloidal complexes through Monte Carlo simulation, in which the effect of charge anisotropy is taken into account by a DLVO-like intra-particle potential, as recentely proposed by Velegol and Thwar [D. Velegol and P.K. Thwar, Langmuir, 17, 2001]. The results reveal that in the presence of a charge heterogeneity the aggregation process slows down due to the progressive increase of the potential barrier height upon clustering. Within this framework, the experimentally observed cluster phases in polyelectrolyte-liposomes solutions should be considered as a kinetic arrested state., Comment: 9 pages. 11 figures

We report a simulation study of the gas-liquid critical point for the square-well potential, for values of well width delta as small as 0.005 times the particle diameter sigma. For small delta, the reduced second virial coefficient at the critical point B_2*c is found to depend linearly on delta. The observed weak linear dependence is not sufficient to produce any significant observable effect if the critical temperature T_c is estimated via a constant B_2*c assumption, due to the highly non linear transformation between B_2*c and T_c. This explains the previously observed validity of the law of corresponding states. The critical density rho_c is also found to be constant when measured in units of the cubed average distance between two bonded particles (1+0.5 delta)/sigma. The possibility of describing the delta -> 0 dependence with precise functional forms provides improved acccurate estimates of the critical parameters of the adhesive hard-sphere AHS model., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

We study the dynamics of monodisperse hard ellipsoids via a new event-driven molecular dynamics algorithm as a function of volume fraction $\phi$ and aspect ratio $X_0$. We evaluate the translational $D_{trans}$ and the rotational $D_{rot}$ diffusion coefficient and the associated isodiffusivity lines in the $\phi-X_0$ plane. We observe a decoupling of the translational and rotational dynamics which generates an almost perpendicular crossing of the $D_{trans}$ and $D_{rot}$ isodiffusivity lines. While the self intermediate scattering function exhibits stretched relaxation, i.e. glassy dynamics, only for large $\phi$ and $X_0 \approx 1$, the second order orientational correlator $C_2(t)$ shows stretching only for large and small $X_0$ values. We report a study of the mode-coupling theory (MCT) glass transition line for the Girifalco model of C60 fullerene. The equilibrium static structure factor of the model, the only required input for the MCT calculations, is provided by molecular dynamics simulations. The glass transition line develops inside the metastable liquid-solid coexistence region and extends down in temperature, terminating on the liquid sideof the metastable portion of the liquid-vapor binodal. The vitrification locus does not show re-entrant behavior. A comparison with previous computer simulation estimates of the location of the glass line suggests that the theory accurately reproduces the shape of the arrest line in the density-temperature plane. The theoretical HNC and MHNC structure factors (and consequently the corresponding MCT glass line) compare well with the numerical counterpart. We evaluate the location of the gas-liquid coexistence line and of the associated critical point for the primitive model for water (PMW), introduced by Kolafa and Nezbeda [J. Kolafa and I. Nezbeda, Mol. Phys. 61, 161 (1987)]. Besides being a simple model for a molecular network forming liquid, the PMW is representative of patchy proteins and novel colloidal particles interacting with localized directional short-range attractions. We show that the gas-liquid phase separation is metastable, i.e. it takes place in the region of the phase diagram where the crystal phase is thermodynamically favored, as in the case of articles interacting via short-range attractive spherical potentials. Differently from spherical potentials, we do not observe crystallization close to the critical point. The region of gas-liquid instability of this patchy model is significantly reduced as compared to equivalent models of spherically interacting particles, confirming the possibility of observing kinetic arrest in an homogeneous sample driven by bonding as opposed to packing., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures May 8th, 2007: Corrected typos, corrected density critical exponent, fixed fugacity scale in Fig. 6

We numerically study a simple fluid composed of particles having a hard-core repulsion, complemented by two short-ranged attractive (sticky) spots at the particle poles, which provides a simple model for equilibrium polymerization of linear chains. The simplicity of the model allows for a close comparison, with no fitting parameters, between simulations and theoretical predictions based on the Wertheim perturbation theory, a unique framework for the analytic prediction of the properties of self-assembling particle systems in terms of molecular parameter and liquid state correlation functions. This theory has not been subjected to stringent tests against simulation data for ordering across the polymerization transition. We numerically determine many of the thermodynamic properties governing this basic form of self-assembly (energy per particle, order parameter or average fraction of particles in the associated state, average chain length, chain length distribution, average end-to-end distance of the chains, and the static structure factor) and find that predictions of the Wertheim theory accord remarkably well with the simulation results.

We study the statistical properties of the potential energy landscape of a system of particles interacting via a very short-range square-well potential (of depth $-u_0$), as a function of the range of attraction $\Delta$ to provide thermodynamic insights of the Noro and Frenkel [ M.G. Noro and D. Frenkel, J.Chem.Phys. {\bf 113}, 2941 (2000)] scaling. We exactly evaluate the basin free energy and show that it can be separated into a {\it vibrational} ($\Delta$-dependent) and a {\it floppy} ($\Delta$-independent) component. We also show that the partition function is a function of $\Delta e^{\beta u_o}$, explaining the equivalence of the thermodynamics for systems characterized by the same second virial coefficient. We report Brownian dynamics simulation of the out-of-equilibrium dynamics (aging) in a colloidal suspension composed of rigid charged disks, one possible model for Laponite, a synthetic clay deeply investigated in the last few years by means of various experimental techniques. At variance with previous numerical investigations, mainly focusing on static structure and equilibrium dynamics, we explore the out-of-equilibrium aging dynamics. We analyze the wave-vector and waiting time dependence of the dynamics, focusing on the single-particle and collective density fluctuations (intermediate scattering functions), the mean squared displacement and the rotational dynamics. Our findings confirm the complexity of the out-of-equilibrium dynamical behavior of this class of colloidal suspensions and suggest that an arrested disordered state driven by a repulsive Yukawa potential, i.e., a Wigner glass can be observed in this model.

We report extensive Monte Carlo and event-driven molecular dynamics simulations of the fluid and liquid phase of a primitive model for silica recently introduced by Ford, Auerbach and Monson [J. Chem. Phys. 17, 8415 (2004)]. We evaluate the iso-diffusivity lines in the temperature-density plane to provide an indication of the shape of the glass transition line. Except for large densities, arrest is driven by the onset of the tetrahedral bonding pattern and the resulting dynamics is strong in the Angell's classification scheme. We compare structural and dynamic properties with corresponding results of two recently studied primitive models of network forming liquids -- a primitive model for water and a angular-constraint free model of four-coordinated particles -- to pin down the role of the geometric constraints associated to the bonding. Eventually we discuss the similarities between "glass" formation in network forming liquids and "gel" formation in colloidal dispersions of patchy particles., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

Recently we have studied, using numerical simulations, a limited valency model, i.e. an attractive square well model with a constraint on the maximum number of bonded neighbors. Studying a large region of temperatures $T$ and packing fractions $\phi$, we have estimated the location of the liquid-gas phase separation spinodal and the loci of dynamic arrest, where the system is trapped in a disordered non-ergodic state. Two distinct arrest lines for the system are present in the system: a {\it (repulsive) glass} line at high packing fraction, and a {\it gel} line at low $\phi$ and $T$. The former is essentially vertical ($\phi$-controlled), while the latter is rather horizontal ($T$-controlled) in the $(\phi-T)$ plane. We here complement the molecular dynamics results with mode coupling theory calculations, using the numerical structure factors as input. We find that the theory predicts a repulsive glass line -- in satisfactory agreement with the simulation results -- and an attractive glass line which appears to be unrelated to the gel line., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. We present a numerical study of the statistical properties of the potential energy landscape of a simple model for strong network-forming liquids. The model is a system of spherical particles interacting through a square well potential, with an additional constraint that limits the maximum number of bonds, $N_{\rm max}$, per particle. Extensive simulations have been carried out as a function of temperature, packing fraction, and $N_{\rm max}$. The dynamics of this model are characterized by Arrhenius temperature dependence of the transport coefficients and by nearly exponential relaxation of dynamic correlators, i.e. features defining strong glass-forming liquids. This model has two important features: (i) landscape basins can be associated with bonding patterns; (ii) the configurational volume of the basin can be evaluated in a formally exact way, and numerically with arbitrary precision. These features allow us to evaluate the number of different topologies the bonding pattern can adopt. We find that the number of fully bonded configurations, i.e. configurations in which all particles are bonded to $N_{\rm max}$ neighbors, is extensive, suggesting that the configurational entropy of the low temperature fluid is finite. We also evaluate the energy dependence of the configurational entropy close to the fully bonded state, and show that it follows a logarithmic functional form, differently from the quadratic dependence characterizing fragile liquids. We suggest that the presence of a discrete energy scale, provided by the particle bonds, and the intrinsic degeneracy of fully bonded disordered networks differentiates strong from fragile behavior., Comment: Final version. We examine the vitrification and melting of asymmetric star polymers mixtures by combining rheological measurements with mode coupling theory. We identify two types of glassy states, a {\it single} glass, in which the small component is fluid in the glassy matrix of the big one and a {\it double} glass, in which both components are vitrified. Addition of small star polymers leads to melting of {\it both} glasses and the melting curve has a non-monotonic dependence on the star-star size ratio. We investigate, for two water models displaying a liquid-liquid critical point, the relation between changes in dynamic and thermodynamic anomalies arising from the presence of the liquid-liquid critical point. We find a correlation between the dynamic fragility transition and the locus of specific heat maxima $C_P^{\rm max}$ (``Widom line'') emanating from the critical point. Our findings are consistent with a possible relation between the previously hypothesized liquid-liquid phase transition and the transition in the dynamics recently observed in neutron scattering experiments on confined water. More generally, we argue that this connection between $C_P^{\rm max}$ and dynamic crossover is not limited to the case of water, a hydrogen bond network forming liquid, but is a more general feature of crossing the Widom line. Specifically, we also study the Jagla potential, a spherically-symmetric two-scale potential known to possess a liquid-liquid critical point, in which the competition between two liquid structures is generated by repulsive and attractive ramp interactions., Comment: 6 pages and 5 figures

We numerically investigate the competition between phase separation and dynamical arrest in a colloidal system interacting via a short ranged attractive potential. Equilibrium fluid configurations are quenched at two different temperatures below the critical temperature and followed during their time evolution. At the lowest studied $T$, the phase separation process is interrupted by the formation of an attractive glass in the dense phase. At the higher $T$, no arrest is observed and the phase separation process proceeds endless in the simulated time window. The final structure of the glass retains memory of the interrupted phase separation process in the form of a frozen spinodal decomposition peak, whose location and amplitude is controlled by the average packing fraction. We also discuss the time evolution of the non ergodicity parameter, providing evidence of a progressively decreasing localization length on increasing the packing fraction. We use molecular-dynamics computer simulations to study the translational and reorientational dynamics of a glass-forming liquid of dumbbells. For sufficiently elongated molecules the standard strong steric hindrance scenario for the rotational dynamics is found. However, for small elongations we find a different scenario -- the weak steric hindrance scenario -- caused by a new type of glass transition in which the orientational dynamics of the molecule's axis undergoes a dynamical transition with a continuous increase of the non-ergodicity parameter. We numerically study the dependence of the dynamics on the range of interaction $\Delta$ for the short-range square well potential. We find that, for small $\Delta$, dynamics scale exactly in the same way as thermodynamics, both for Newtonian and Brownian microscopic dynamics. For interaction ranges from a few percent down to the Baxter limit, the relative location of the attractive glass line and the liquid-gas line does not depend on $\Delta$. This proves that in this class of potentials, disordered arrested states (gels) can be generated only as a result of a kinetically arrested phase separation., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We analyze differences in dynamics and in properties of the sampled potential energy landscape between different equilibrium trajectories, for a system of rigid water molecules interacting with a two body potential. On entering in the supercooled region, differences between different realizations enhance and survive even when particles have diffused several time their average distance. We observe a strong correlation between the mean square displacement of the individual trajectories and the average energy of the sampled landscape.

We report a numerical study of saddles properties of the potential energy landscape for soft spheres with different softness, i.e. different power n of the interparticle repulsive potential. We find that saddle-based quantities rescale into master curves once energies and temperatures are scaled by mode-coupling temperature T_MCT, confirming and generalizing previous findings obtained for Lennard-Jones like models., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures

We report a numerical study, covering a wide range of packing fraction $\phi$ and temperature $T$, for a system of particles interacting via a square well potential supplemented by an additional constraint on the maximum number $n_{\rm max}$ of bonded interactions. We show that when $n_{\rm max}<6$, the liquid-gas coexistence region shrinks, giving access to regions of low $\phi$ where dynamics can be followed down to low $T$ without an intervening phase separation. We calculate the statistical properties of the energy landscape of a minimal model for strong network-forming liquids. Dynamics and thermodynamic properties of this model can be computed with arbitrary precision even at low temperatures. A degenerate disordered ground state and logarithmic statistics for the energy distribution are the landscape signatures of strong liquid behavior. Differences from fragile liquid properties are attributed to the presence of a discrete energy scale, provided by the particle bonds, and to the intrinsic degeneracy of topologically disordered networks., Comment: Revised version

We report calculations of the ground state energies and geometries for clusters of different sizes (up to 80 particles), where individual particles interact simultaneously via a short-ranged attractive -modeled with a generalization of the Lennard-Jones potential- and a long-ranged repulsive Yukawa potential. We show that, for specific choices of the parameters of the repulsive potential, the ground state energy per particle has a minimum at a finite cluster size. For these values of the parameters in the thermodynamic limit, at low temperatures and small packing fractions -where clustering is favored and cluster-cluster interactions can be neglected- thermodynamically stable cluster phases can be formed. The analysis of the ground state geometries shows that the spherical shape is marginally stable. We perform molecular dynamics simulations of short-range attractive colloid particles modeled by a narrow (3% of the hard sphere diameter) square well potential of unit depth. We compare the dynamics of systems with the same thermodynamics but different bond lifetimes, by adding to the square well potential a thin barrier at the edge of the attractive well. For permanent bonds, the relaxation time $\tau$ diverges as the packing fraction $\phi$ approaches a threshold related to percolation, while for short-lived bonds, the $\phi$-dependence of $\tau$ is more typical of a glassy system. At intermediate bond lifetimes, the $\phi$-dependence of $\tau$ is driven by percolation at low $\phi$, but then crosses over to glassy behavior at higher $\phi$. We report molecular-dynamics simulation results performed for a model of molecular liquid orthoterphenyl in supercooled states, which we then compare with both experimental data and mode-coupling-theory (MCT) predictions, aiming at a better understanding of structural relaxation in orthoterphenyl. We pay special attention to the wavenumber dependence of the collective dynamics. It is shown that the simulation results for the model share many features with experimental data for real system, and that MCT captures the simulation results at the semiquantitative level except for intermediate wavenumbers connected to the overall size of the molecule. Theoretical results at the intermediate wavenumber region are found to be improved by taking into account the spatial correlation of the molecule's geometrical center. This supports the idea that unusual dynamical properties at the intermediate wavenumbers, reported previously in simulation studies for the model and discernible in coherent neutron-scattering experimental data, are basically due to the coupling of the rotational motion to the geometrical-center dynamics. However, there still remain qualitative as well as quantitative discrepancies between theoretical prediction and corresponding simulation results at the intermediate wavenumbers, which call for further theoretical investigation., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, Phys. By employing computer simulations for a model binary mixture, we show that a reentrant glass transition upon adding a second component only occurs if the ratio $\alpha$ of the short-time mobilities between the glass-forming component and the additive is sufficiently small. For $\alpha \approx 1$, there is no reentrant glass, even if the size asymmetry between the two components is large, in accordance with two-component mode coupling theory. For $\alpha \ll 1$, on the other hand, the reentrant glass is observed and reproduced only by an effective one-component mode coupling theory., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The concept of fragility provides a possibility to rank different supercooled liquids on the basis of the temperature dependence of dynamic and/or thermodynamic quantities. We recall here the definitions of kinetic and thermodynamic fragility proposed in the last years and discuss their interrelations. At the same time we analyze some recently introduced models for the statistical properties of the potential energy landscape. Building on the Adam-Gibbs relation, which connects structural relaxation times to configurational entropy, we analyze the relation between statistical properties of the landscape and fragility. We call attention to the fact that the knowledge of number, energy depth and shape of the basins of the potential energy landscape may not be sufficient for predicting fragility. We perform extensive simulations of a binary mixture Lennard-Jones system subjected to a temperature jump in order to study the time evolution of fluctuations during aging. Analyzing data from 1500 different aging realizations, we calculate distributions of inherent structure energies for different aging times and contrast them with equilibrium. We find that the distributions initially become narrower and then widen as the system equilibrates. For deep quenches, fluctuations in the glassy system differ significantly from those observed in equilibrium. We study the aging dynamics in a model for dense simple liquids, in which particles interact through a hard-core repulsion complemented by a short-ranged attractive potential, of the kind found in colloidal suspensions. In this system, at large packing fractions, kinetically arrested disordered states can be created both on cooling (attractive glass) and on heating (repulsive glass). The possibility of having two distinct glasses, at the same packing fraction, with two different dynamics offers the unique possibility of comparing -- within the same model -- the differences in aging dynamics. We report an extensive study of the phase diagram of a simple model for ortho-terphenyl, focusing on the limits of stability of the liquid state. Reported data extend previous studies of the same model to both lower and higher densities and to higher temperatures. We estimate the location of the homogeneous liquid-gas nucleation line and of the spinodal locus. Within the potential energy landscape formalism, we calculate the distributions of depth, number, and shape of the potential energy minima and show that the statistical properties of the landscape are consistent with a Gaussian distribution of minima over a wide range of volumes. We report the volume dependence of the parameters entering in the Gaussian distribution (amplitude, average energy, variance). We evaluate thermodynamic, geometric and dynamic properties of a short-ranged square well binary mixture to provide a coherent picture of this simple, but rich, model for colloidal interactions. In particular, we compare the location, in the temperature-packing fraction plane, of the geometrical percolation locus, the metastable liquid-gas spinodal and the glass transition lines. Such comparison provides evidence that the gel-state can not be related to the attractive glass transition line directly. Indications are given for the possibility of an indirect link between the two, via an arrested phase separation process. Molecular-dynamics simulations are presented for two correlation functions formed with the partial density fluctuations of binary hard-sphere mixtures in order to explore the effects of mixing on the evolution of glassy dynamics upon compressing the liquid into high-density states. Partial-density-fluctuation correlation functions for the two species are reported. Results for the alpha-relaxation process are quantified by parameters for the strength, the stretching, and the time scale, where the latter varies over almost four orders of magnitude upon compression. The parameters exhibit an appreciable dependence on the wave vector; and this dependence is different for the correlation function referring to the smaller and that for the larger species. The dynamics of star polymers has been investigated via extensive Molecular- and Brownian Dynamics simulations for a large range of functionality $f$ and packing fraction $\eta$. The calculated isodiffusivity curves display both minima and maxima as a function of $\eta$ and minima as a function of $f$. Simulation results are compared with theoretical predictions based on different approximations for the structure factor. In particular, the ideal glass transition line predicted by mode-coupling theory is shown to exactly track the isodiffusivity curves, offering a theoretical understanding for the observation of disordered arrested states in star polymer solutions., Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, to be published in PRL

We study by means of molecular dynamics simulations the aging behavior of a molecular model of ortho-terphenyl. We find evidence of a a non-monotonic evolution of the volume during an isothermal-isobaric equilibration process, a phenomenon known in polymeric systems as Kovacs effect. We characterize this phenomenology in terms of landscape properties, providing evidence that, far from equilibrium, the system explores region of the potential energy landscape distinct from the one explored in thermal equilibrium. Features of the energy landscape sampled by supercooled liquids are numerically analyzed for several Lennard-Jones like model systems. The properties of quasisaddles (minima of the square gradient of potential energy W=|grad V|^2), are shown to have a direct relationship with the dynamical behavior, confirming that the quasisaddle order extrapolates to zero at the mode-coupling temperature T_MCT. The same result is obtained either analyzing all the minima of W or the saddles (absolute minima of W), supporting the conjectured similarity between quasisaddles and saddles, as far as the temperature dependence of the properties influencing the slow dynamics is concerned. We find evidence of universality in the shape of the landscape: plots for different systems superimpose into master curves, once energies and temperatures are scaled by T_MCT. This allows to establish a quantitative relationship between T_MCT and potential energy barriers for LJ-like systems, and suggests a possible generalization to different model liquids., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We report extensive molecular-dynamics simulation results for binary mixtures of hard spheres for different size disparities and different mixing percentages,for packing fractions up to 0.605 and over a characteristic time interval spanning up to five orders in magnitude. We explore the changes in the evolution of glassy dynamics due to mixing and discover two opposite scenarios: for large size disparity, increasing the mixing percentage of small particles leads to a speed-up of long-time dynamics, while small disparity leads to a slowing down. The scaling properties of the soft-sphere potential allow the derivation of an exact expression for the pressure of a frozen liquid, i.e., the pressure corresponding to configurations which are local minima in its multidimensional potential energy landscape. The existence of such a relation offers the unique possibility for testing the recently proposed extension of the liquid free energy to glassy out-of-equilibrium conditions and the associated expression for the temperature of the configurational degrees of freedom. We demonstrate that the non-equilibrium free energy provides an exact description of the soft-sphere pressure in glass states.
