Abstract Food supplements are defined as foodstuffs the purpose of which is to supplement the normal diet and which are concentrated sources of nutrients or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect, often referred to as nutraceuticals, may exert benefit to the human body. Their use is increasing worldwide, including Europe and in Italy. However, some doctors are skeptical about their effectiveness and safety. This reluctance may depend on poor knowledge of the mechanisms of action and clinical evidence in literature. The Italian Society of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology (SIAIP) promoted the institution of an ad hoc Committee. The first initiative performed by this Committee was the administration of a questionnaire to the members of SIAIP. The results of this survey provided interesting results. Most pediatricians know the food supplement concept but frequently need help understanding the mechanisms of action. Most prescribe food supplements, mainly for preventing infections or enhancing immune defense. In addition, they prefer to use food supplements as cycles or add-on therapy. Finally, most participants like to attend events on this issue and contribute to new evidence through trials. In conclusion, this survey underscores the relevance of food supplement issues and attests to interest in this topic. However, there is a need to provide information and promote studies on this matter.

- Abstract
The evolution of socio-technological habits together with the widespread demand of post-acute and chronic treatments outside hospital boundaries drove the increased demand of medical informatics experts to develop tools for and support healthcare professionals. The recent COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the need of physicians able to manage diseases virtually and remotely. Moreover, healthcare professionals need to access to innovative techniques and procedures to manage biomedical data, cloud-based communication, and data sharing procedures, often connected to innovative devices to support an effective precision in the health treatments. In this paper we report the experiences of the Italian Biomedical Informatics Society (SIBIM), in the definition and promotion of eHealth educational topics in medical and health professions teaching programs, as well as in bioengineering schools, showing how SIBIM members’ efforts have been applied towards increasing the level of eHealth contents in medical schools. LANGUAGE revival ,LANGUAGE policy ,SECRET police ,CULTURAL pluralism ,GERMAN language - Abstract
At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, Hungary was characterised by ethnic diversity. Nevertheless, for a long time there was no sign of this causing any particular tension. The language of everyday life was characterised by pragmatism, and the language of public life, education and science was uniformly Latin. Joseph II's language decree of 1784 (which made German the official language instead of Latin) started the process that would culminate in the language decree of 1844, which made Hungarian the official language. In the first decade of the 19th century, there was a revival of the language issue, with the publication of a series of documents on the language. At the Diet of 1807, there were such heated debates about the language that the Viennese court and the secret police thought it would be a good idea to hold a competition to see whether Hungarian was suitable for official use in Hungary. 21 contributions were received for this competition. Almost half of the applicants were from Upper Hungary, all of them Protestants, most of them pastors. They were the founders of one of the earliest scientific-literary societies, Solennia, in 1808. The works of the society's members were published every year in the journal Solennia, which was published in four languages (Latin, Hungarian, German, Slovak). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Congress of the Polish Society of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine is the most important event for all those involved in hematology and transfusiology. Between 14 and 16 September 2023, almost 1,300 attendees met in Katowice to discuss progress in these disciplines. Nowadays, the results of therapy of hematological malignancies in Poland are almost the same as the European average value. This is the result of hard work by the national working groups as well as international collaboration. Since 2021, Polish hematology has achieved great progress in therapy with the use of chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy. Also, a number of new compounds for hematological disorders, and supportive therapy, have been introduced in Poland, either within clinical trials or reimbursed by the National Health Fund. Even so, many patients still suffer unmet medical needs. Several important compounds, already licensed, are awaiting reimbursement. New cellular technologies are in the pipeline. The reimbursement of more therapies is desired, and further progress in diagnostic and therapeutic methods is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Over the last few years, during the pandemic, the Brazilian population has suffered several problems, ranging from health to socioeconomic impacts. When we consider Brazilian science, there has been an undeniable scientific delay generated by the pandemic, especially in areas that are not related to the coronavirus. In this context, with the aim of fostering collaboration among researchers in the field of Developmental Origins of Health and Diseases (DOHaD) and enhancing the potential for implementing public health strategies to prevent noncommunicable chronic diseases, the Brazilian Association of Developmental Origins of Health and Diseases (DOHaD Brazil) was established in 2020. In this narrative, we explore the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, focusing on its impacts on scientific research conducted in universities. Additionally, we underscore the significance of the DOHaD Brazil Association, particularly from the perspective of young researchers engaged in DOHaD research in Brazil.

The Association of Southeastern Biologists was founded in 1937 with the goal of increasing the contact and collaboration between scientists in the southeastern United States (US). With the exception of two years during World War II and one year during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Association has met annually to promote research and education in the biological sciences by providing a student-friendly networking environment. In recent years, the Association has placed an increased focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion among elected and appointed leaders, among participants in the annual meeting, and in the development of funding and other opportunities for students. This work prompted us to review the history of our Association, including periods of racial segregation and inequity, and focus on our current efforts to promote access and inclusion by students and scientists from myriad underrepresented groups. In so doing, the past provides us with the opportunity to cast a vision for the future of the Association. In this paper, we seek to share the journey of the Association of Southeastern Biologists in this regard so that we may be transparent, exposing the missteps and amplifying the successes of our organization. We envision this work as a first step toward creating a more open and inclusive scientific community for the future.

The global scientific community has become increasingly diverse over recent decades, but is this ongoing development also reflected among top‐publishing authors and potential scientific leaders? We surveyed 13 leading journals in ecology, evolution, and conservation to investigate the diversity of the 100 top‐publishing authors in each journal between 1945 and 2019. Out of 1051 individual top‐publishing authors, only 11% are women. The United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and Canada account for more than 75% of top‐publishing authors, while countries of the Global South (as well as Russia, Japan, and South Korea) were strikingly underrepresented. The number of top‐publishing authors who are women and/or are from the Global South is increasing only slowly over time. We outline transformative actions that scientific communities can take to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion at author, leadership, and society level. The resulting promotion of scientific innovation and productivity is essential for the development of global solutions in conservation science. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While the Chilean Society of Forest Sciences (SOCIFOR) was created by a group of forest-related institutions, its inactivity has wakened its progress. Here, we point out certain shortcomings of SOCIFOR, and propose actions to address them. We suggest increasing the number of members, restructuring its regulatory statutes - modeled on those used by other scientific societies-, taking an active role in the organization of the national forest science congress and editing the Chilean journal of forest science (i.e. Bosque). Strengthening SOCIFOR would help to improve the standing of forest sciences in the country. Our proposal is ambitious, though doable, if the keys come together to achieve a common goal: strengthening forest sciences in Chile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CONFLICT of interests , *ETHICAL problems , *PALLIATIVE treatment , *MEDICAL research , *CONTINUING education - Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to bring attention to the complex issue of conflicts of interest (COIs) from the point of view of Scientific Societies and their responsibility in managing secondary interests possibly undermining their activities such as improvement of professional quality, research promotion, and development of guidelines. The first publication on the issue of COIs dates back to more than a century, but only in the last decades the related ethical and legal problems have received public and professional attention. The growing role of industry in biomedical research, the significant decrease in public contributions to health, care, training, and research, and the involvement of physicians in industry-funded research have obliged to study how to identify and manage COIs. The Bioethics and Palliative Care Study Group of the Italian Neurological Society addressed the issue with a specific focus on Scientific Societies that, in our opinion, should also set an example for individual practice, raising awareness among their associates on COIs and implementing strategies for their identification and management. The paper is focused on the nature of the COI, why and how it could be managed, which policies can be implemented, and which kind of action should be considered by Scientific Societies. We emphasize the role of Scientific Societies in fostering knowledge and awareness of conflicts of interest through training and continuing education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The text lays the grounds for the research into the activities of the Archaeological Society of Yugoslavia (ASY) in all its organizational aspects (1949–1991). The concept of scientific societies – one of the forms of organization of scholars in various discipline, is investigated. The aim is to introduce a wider investigation of ASY’s importance in archaeology, organized into several interconnected parts. A short chronology of the genesis of scientific societies in the territory of former Yugoslavia is laid out. The fact is emphasized that ASY was founded upon older traditions that shaped the diversity of archaeological practices in the region. New information is offered on organization of archaeologists in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, introducing for the first time the meeting of Yugoslav archaeologists in Dobrna by Celje, Slovenia, in 1922, thus acquiring a wider context for the interpretation of the first congress of Yugoslav archaeologists, held the same year in Belgrade. The importance of these meetings is emphasized, as well as the idea of the foundation of an archaeological institute in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, although it is clearly stated that the process of joining archaeologists in the Kingdom was unsuccessful in the long term. A chronological overview of the development of ASY is presented through its organizational forms: Coordination Board of Yugoslav Archaeologists (1949–1954), Archaeological Society of Yugoslavia (1954–1972) and Association of Archaeological Societies of Yugoslavia (1972–1991). The activities and achievements of the association are described (congresses, symposia, publishing activity...), implicitly linking the genesis of ASY with the development of the Yugoslav society and state. The importance of ASY is discussed and of the research issues its work raises. Since the paper is the result of the work in progress, the conclusions are not final, and the focus of research is flexible. The accessible evidence is discussed. The concluding part of the paper offers the author’s assessment of the importance of ASY and the concept of autonomous “Yugoslav archaeology”.

This article emphasizes the urgency of the problem of teaching in medical universities, and gives special attention to the thoughts of the scientist about providing clarity in the process of teaching students. The article notes his role in the arrangement and equipment of the new eye clinic of the Moscow University, and presents fragments of memoirs of his student and mentee, another famous Russian ophthalmologist S.S. Golovin. A remark is made about the need to clarify the terms traditionally accepted in the history of medicine in relation to surgery and ophthalmology. An assessment is given on the contribution of A.N. Maklakov to the establishment of the Moscow Ophthalmological Circle, his efforts to unite doctors, and the development of the statutory documents of the All-Russian Society of Eye Doctors.

Scientific societies play an important role in scientists' career development and can have an impact on scientific advancement. The current study explores scientific societies' view of and support for public engagement. Interviews with key actors of 21 US-based scientific societies suggest that societies recognize the value of public engagement and outreach, and the emphasis has been steadily increasing. Depending on the membership size and discipline of the society, various types of engagement activities are supported and offered. We also explored potential challenges and opportunities for societies in supporting scientific engagement of the public. The current project aimed at providing an overview of the role of scientific societies to help identify ways to areas to enhance the allocation of resources to support public engagement and future research, including theory development. The article research the investigation of the complex of questions that connected with the phenomenon of tourism as socio-ethical factor of development of society in conditions of unstable transition society. The goal of investigation consist in socio-philosophical analysis of tourism as social institution that systemically influence on all spheres of social life provided their improvement, complication and development. It was shown that tourism as a research object has come a long way but, despite the maturation signs, there are still the challenge of effective collaboration between business and non-business approaches in order to bring positive social changes in tourism and in order to change the public mind where tourism industry mostly creates negative environmental and socio-cultural changes. In the Ukrainian academic environment, the view on tourism as research object is in its infancy and historical navigation can be important for deeper understanding existing scientific achievements. The basic principles of tourism are described and recommendations for implementation to be followed by all the participants of relations in tourism are given. During the research the authors revealed the concepts that are basic to the study of tourism as an object of research. The authors made the appropriate conclusions, submitted recommendations. It is revealed that tourism is an integral part of the life of the modern man, which allows to use additional opportunities of the economic sector for job creation and infrastructural transformations, and makes a significant contribution to the development of the world economy. The prospect of further research is the study of the phenomenon of tourism, as well as training of the future masters of tourism in higher education institutions.,
