In this article, some approaches are presented for defining the didactics of mathematics and the relationship of mathematics with other scientific disciplines with which it is closely related. The relationship between mathematics teaching and scientific mathematics is an essential theoretical topic of the school mathematics curriculum. Following the presentation of these approaches, the teaching of mathematics prerogatives will be understood, the role of mathematics teaching in a science system will be characterized, the importance of the theoretical basis of mathematics and its transformation into the mathematics curriculum system in education will be understood. The process of mathematical didactics is guided by the systematic inclusion of insights from other related disciplines, thus exposing inevitable shortcomings and hidden pitfalls. of the whole process. There are different traditions in different cultures and different didactic schools of handling this process of choosing, preparing and evaluating mathematical topics for teaching purposes. 4. Visual Instruction: The use of the optical lantern in Dutch academic teaching practices, 1890-1940

- Abstract
The introduction of projection of photographic light images in academic teaching in the Netherlands was a fitting response to the increased number of students in the late 19th century: while the professor was explaining, everyone saw the same illustration material. Moreover, image projection allowed more examples to be shown in a shorter time frame. This thesis focuses on the role of the optical lantern in knowledge transfer at Dutch universities between 1880 and 1940. To interpret the different roles of projection, I chose to examine three academic disciplines: botany, art history and dentistry. These disciplines all represent a specific "thought collective". In the words of science philosopher Ludwik Fleck's this represents a community of people who exchange ideas among themselves and maintain a certain intellectual interaction. One important basis of a "thought collective" concerns academic education, as it contributes to both the formation and continuity of the community. Therefore, this research considers lectures with projected images as an intrinsic part of the training of new generations of scientists. This creates a new connection between the subfields of university history and history of science. Accordingly, this research into daily teaching practice by means of projected slides allows us to gain a better understanding of the different focal points of knowledge transfer, of the relationship between textbooks and lectures and between theory and practice. The enormous quantities of glass slides still to be found in the various archive repositories today offer an excellent opportunity for research into the relationship between teaching practice and science communication.

The aim of the article is to present a base of Polish Publishers Open Access Policies as a tool supporting the scientific community in the implementation of openness policies. It is the first national platform to gather and analyze a publishing policy in the field of Open Access to Polish scientific journals. For scientists, it is a tool for searching for a Polish journal meeting certain criteria. It enables grant recipients to verify whether the journal meets the principles of Plan S. The database also provides information on the principles of using intellectual property. The functionalities of the database were analyzed based on NCN’s policy comparing them with the principles of publishing research results in Open Access. The specific criteria used in the Polish Publishers Open Access Policies database were compared with other databases: Arianta, SHERPA/RoMEO. The analysis shows that the Polish Publishers Open Access Policy is the only national database for Polish scientific journals, bringing together in one place information necessary for the scientific community on publication in Open Access. The purpose of this research was to specify the interrelationships of various scientific disciplines based on the official declarations of scientists. The most required scientific disciplines were identified for multidisciplinary research. Undirected graphs with the specified parameters were used for modelling of community structure. On the basis of an open database POLON, a graph was created for the connections among disciplines of science. The number of scientists in particular branches and disciplines of science was presented. The connections with in the branches of science and disciplines were shown. Four different measures were considered: percentage of double declarants, vertex degree, weighted vertex degree and betweenness centrality. The disciplines with highest level of interdisciplinarity were found, namely: biomedical engineering, informatics, culture and religious sciences, health sciences, and security sciences. On the contrary, very isolated disciplines were found, including the following: musical arts, astronomy, visual arts and conservation of cultural heritage, veterinary medicine, and archeology. Finally, it was concluded that two branches research (medicals sciences or management and quality sciences) are the most interdisciplinary in Poland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. The evolution of scientific disciplines in applied sciences: dynamics and empirical properties of experimental physics.
- Author
-
Coccia, Mario
- Abstract
How do scientific disciplines evolve? This is one of the fundamental problems of the dynamics of science. This study confronts this problem here by investigating the evolution of experimental physics, which plays a vital role for the progress of science in society. In particular, the main aim of this article is to analyze the structure and endogenous processes of experimental physics to explain and generalize, whenever possible, the properties of the evolution of applied sciences in the phase of continuous expansion of the universe of science. Empirical analysis here suggests the following properties of the dynamics of science: (a) scientific fission, the evolution of scientific disciplines generates a process of division into two or more research fields that evolve as autonomous entities, creating new disciplines of scientific specialization; (b) ambidextrous drivers of science, the evolution of scientific disciplines by scientific fission is due to scientific discoveries or new technologies; (c) higher growth rates of the scientific production are in new research fields of a scientific discipline rather than old ones; (d) average duration of the growth phase of scientific production in research fields is about 80 years, almost the period of one generation of scholars. Overall, then, this study explains, whenever possible, the relationships that support scientific change of disciplines to develop comprehensive properties of the evolution of science directed to economic, technological and social progress. ECONOMIC geography ,HUMAN geography ,TOTAL quality management ,DATABASES ,INTERDISCIPLINARY education - Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this article is an attempt to characterize economic disciplines, i.e. economics and finance, as well as management and quality studies, based on their assignments to scientific journals, and to identify the place of these two disciplines in relation to each other and their links with other disciplines. Design/methodology/approach: Quantitative and network analysis methods were used for graphical representation and description of the complex relationships. The analysis was based on the data published on 31 July 2019, constituting a list of scientific journals. Findings: The results confirm a strong link between the two disciplines, but they also show some differences between them. The discipline of economics and finance is particularly strongly linked with the discipline of social and economic geography and spatial management. This is not the case for management and quality studies, which is more closely linked to disciplines outside social sciences. Research limitations/implications: The results are based only on a quantitative approach to the relationships between disciplines, therefore, they should not be used to draw too far reaching conclusions, e.g. on the differences between these two disciplines in methods, subject matter or facilities under analysis. Further research may take into account, for example, different research trends and approaches within the disciplines themselves. Originality/value: Presented network approach shows the connections between scientific disciplines in a new holistic way. The results could be especially interesting for researchers whose studies are interdisciplinary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In their response to our paper, Amihud and Lev (1999) and Denis, Denis, and Sarin (1999) claim that disciplinary differences don't matter and that methods and evidence should speak for themselves. In contrast, we argue that important differences exist between financial economics and strategic management, leading to differing beliefs, norms, methods, and interpretations of empirical results. Using a strategic management perspective to review the evidence presented by Amihud and Lev in their earlier study (1981) and in their and Denis et al.'s critiques of our work (1999), we find no reason to revise our original conclusion: there is little theoretical or empirical basis for believing that monitoring by a firm's principals influences its diversification strategy and acquisition decisions. SOCIOLOGICAL jurisprudence ,SOCIAL comparison ,LEGAL education ,EDUCATIONAL sociology ,STATE laws ,TWENTIETH century - Abstract
The subject of this paper is a question of general sociology because sociology is one of the most complex sciences, both in comparison with natural sciences and in comparison with social sciences. Bearing in mind the fact that each science is determined primarily by its subject matter, and then by its method, the conclusion is drawn that most of the sciences are closely intertwined with either an object, either by methods that are very difficult to separate. Further, this paper clarifies the issue of the subject of the theory of state and law. The theory of state and law appears as a unique discipline only in the late twentieth century, which has the task of studying the state and law. In the end, the subject and methods of sociology of law are studied as a special scientific discipline. Sociology of Law is one of the youngest social sciences. There are different opinions and attitudes regarding the determination of sociology of law as a special scientific discipline, as well as disagreement whether it belongs to legal, or sociological sciences. The method of any scientific discipline depends directly on the subject of its study, which certainly applies to the sociology of law. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SCIENTIFIC Revolution , *REVOLUTIONS , *INTERDISCIPLINARY research - Abstract
Contemporary interdisciplinary research is often described as bringing some important changes in the structure and aims of the scientific enterprise. Sometimes, it is even characterized as a sort of Kuhnian scientific revolution. In this paper, the analogy between interdisciplinarity and scientific revolutions will be analysed. It will be suggested that the way in which interdisciplinarity is promoted looks similar to how new paradigms were described and defended in some episodes of revolutionary scientific change. However, contrary to what happens during some scientific revolutions, the rhetoric with which interdisciplinarity is promoted does not seem to be accompanied by a strong agreement about what interdisciplinarity actually is. In the end, contemporary interdisciplinarity could be defined as being in a 'pre-paradigmatic' phase, with the very talk promoting interdisciplinarity being a possible obstacle to its maturity. Adolphe Quetelet was a Belgian polymath who aimed to advance aggregate-level statistical tools as a unifying framework for all scientific disciplines. In doing so, Quetelet adopted the astronomer's Law of Error (i.e., the normal distribution curve) and applied it to the study of moral and social phenomena in developing his notion of physique sociale (social physics). Quetelet further focused his attention on l'homme moyen (the average man) and, as such, argued that the average value of a distribution should be of primary concern in the study of human attributes. In the present article, I examine the influences that these ideas had on the methodological practices of late 19th- and early 20th- century psychologists. I illustrate how the dominant methodological approach implemented by psychologists in the early 20th century was deeply rooted in the demography of Quetelet's social statistics. In particular, I argue that psychologists' adoption of the Neo-Galtonian model of research was successful because it embraced Quetelet's determinism, emphasis on average values, and grouping of distributions based on type. Autoencoders are widely used in many scientific disciplines for their good performance as so-called building blocks of deep learning. Furthermore, they have a pronounced capability for dimensionality reduction. In this paper it is shown that autoencoders can additionally be used not only to detect but to qualify dependencies among the parameters of input data sets. For doing so, a two-step approach is proposed. Herein, the identical mapping of the input data to the output layer is done with a stacked autoencoder. Evaluating respective sensitivity measures yields the sought interrelations between the input parameters, if there are any. To verify the new approach, numerical experiments are conducted with synthesized data where linear or nonlinear dependencies between the input parameters are known a priori. It is shown that the two-step approach automatically detects these dependencies for all investigated cases.

The study of entropies of hypergroups in scientific disciplines such as chemistry, physics, geometry and coding theory helps us to calculate the chaos of the scientific processes of phenomena. In this respect, different entropies on hypergroups have been defined and their systemic properties have been investigated. This paper introduces the notion of hypernormed entropy on topological hypernormed hypergroups and provides some interesting examples. The study investigates the fundamental properties of this entropy such as invariance under conjugation, invariance under inversion, the logarithmic law, monotonicity for subflows and continuity for direct limits.

Visual Literacy As an Approach To Learning Photography. This article is an overview of the current photographic phenomena. Visual literacy as an approach becomes an offer in the development of photography learning science. As a of discipline, photography has the complexity of learning, just like other scientific disciplines. In photography learning, visual literacy is a significant capital. Visual literacy can be understood as a person's ability to respond to phenomena. It's not just the ability to switch media (design); from the oral to the visual, from the textual to the visual, from the audio to the visiual or from the visual to the other visual forms, and the ability to conduct studies of existing visual works. In photography, it is necessary not only to be processed artistically but also processed that has critical considerations, both from ethics, aesthetics, and perspective, to a phenomenon

Leibniz's concept of monads had of great importance for the development of the idealistic conception. Through Kant and his "Physical Monadology" she infiltrated into modern German philosophy. However, not only modern idealists referred to the concept of monads. Especially, that many scientific disciplines, which emanated from philosophy, related to the scope of idealistic notions, for example: psychology or sociology. German psychology and its creators have many often referred to monads theory. Freud, Fromm and Jung presented even their own point of views on this topic. Later theories, such as Lowe's theory, also refer to the concept of monads. These relations and the historical connections between monad theory and modern German psycho-philosophy are shown in this work.

Scientific topics vary in popularity over time. In this paper, we model the life cycles of 200 trending topics by fitting the Logistic and Gompertz models to their frequency over time in published abstracts. Unlike other work, the topics we use are algorithmically extracted from large datasets of abstracts covering computer science, particle physics, cancer research, and mental health. We find that the Gompertz model produces lower median error, leading us to conclude that it is the more appropriate model. Since the Gompertz model is asymmetric, with a steep rise followed a long tail, this implies that scientific topics follow a similar trajectory. We also explore the case of double-peaking curves and find that in some cases, topics will peak multiple times as interest resurges. Finally, when looking at the different scientific disciplines, we find that the lifespan of topics is longer in some disciplines (e.g. cancer research and mental health) than it is others, which may indicate differences in research process and culture between these disciplines.

The stationarity of hydrological systems is dead in the era of the Anthropocene. Has our hydrological or water resources knowledge been well transformed to address this change? By using publications indexed in the Web of Science database since 1900, we aim to investigate the global development of water resources knowledge at the river basin scale with a systems approach, of which water resources knowledge development in a river basin is defined as a complex system involving the co-evolutionary dynamics of scientific disciplines and management issues. It is found that (1) legacy-driven water resources knowledge structures have consistently dominated most of the highly researched river basins in the world, while innovation-driven structures are identified in the river basins receiving increasing research publications in the recent period; (2) the management issues addressed by legacy-driven river basin studies are increasingly homogenized, while a wider range of emerging issues are considered by innovation-driven river basin studies; and (3) cross-disciplinary collaborations have remained largely unchanged and collaborations with social sciences have been very limited. It is concluded that the stationarity of water resources knowledge structure persists. A structural shift of water resources knowledge development is urgently needed to cope with the rapidly changing hydrological systems and associated management issues, and opportunities for such a shift exist in those less researched but globally distributed innovation-driven river basins.

T he current research aims to identify the degree of twenty-first century skills application among university students in the Kingdom. By determining the level of skills available in the university curricula from the students' point of view, determining the level of application of the skills among university students and indicating the differences reflected in the response of the sample members (gender and specialization). The research sample consisted of (576) male and female students from Saudi universities. The researcher prepared a scale through reviewing several studies related to its construction and application to use it with the participants. This scale consisted of two parts: The first part is a survey measuring the 21st century skills in the university curricula. The second part is the university students’ application of the skills of the twenty-first century. The results of the research showed that the skills of the 21st century are available and applicable in the university curricula with a high degree among university students, with statistically significant differences between the literary and scientific disciplines of students in favor of the scientific students. There are no differences between the gender of the participants in possessing the skills of the 21st century, except in flexibility in favor of males.

The main characteristics of the 50 most highly cited reviews based on Scopus data, published in 2013–2017, have been studied. A detailed analysis of these reviews is given in terms of topic relevance, authors’ team authority, and sources rating. The majority of reviews were for medicine, chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology. Many of them were written with the participation of an authoritative expert group from the world’s leading scientific institutions as a regularly updated result review. The largest numbers of authors belonged to the G7 countries, China, and Switzerland. In comparison with these reviews, the Russian practice of preparing review publications has been considered.

The fields of C–H functionalization and photoredox catalysis have garnered enormous interest and utility in the past several decades. Many different scientific disciplines have relied on C–H functionalization and photoredox strategies including natural product synthesis, drug discovery, radiolabeling, bioconjugation, materials, and fine chemical synthesis. In this Review, we highlight the use of photoredox catalysis in C–H functionalization reactions. We separate the review into inorganic/organometallic photoredox catalysts and organic-based photoredox catalytic systems. Further subdivision by reaction class—either sp(2) or sp(3) C–H functionalization—lends perspective and tactical strategies for use of these methods in synthetic applications.

This paper examines the role of book reviews in the discipline of the history of science by comparing their appearance in two periodicals, Isis, the flagship journal of the discipline that was founded in 1913, and the Journal for the History of Astronomy, founded in 1970 to serve a newly emerging, specialized subfield within the broader discipline. Our analysis of the reviews published in selected slices of time finds differing norms and reviewing practices within the two journals. Despite important changes during the past century in the conceptualization of the history of science and its research methods, reviewing practices in Isis remained remarkably consistent over time, with reviewers generally defending a fixed set of norms for “good” scholarship. More change appears in reviews of the Journal for the History of Astronomy, as its audience shifted from a mix of the laity, working astronomers, and historians to a specialized group of professional historians of astronomy. Scholarly norms, reflected in the reviews, shifted with these changes in readership. We conclude that book reviews offer rich sources for analyzing the evolution of scholarly disciplines and norms.

Studies on the state and structure of digital knowledge concerning science generally relate to macro and meso scales. Supported by visualizations, these studies can deliver knowledge about emerging scientific fields or collaboration between countries, scientific centers, or groups of researchers. Analyses of individual activities or single scientific career paths are rarely presented and discussed. The authors decided to fill this gap and developed a web application for visualizing the scientific output of particular researchers. This free software based on bibliographic data from local databases, provides six layouts for analysis. Researchers can see the dynamic characteristics of their own writing activity, the time and place of publication, and the thematic scope of research problems. They can also identify cooperation networks, and consequently, study the dependencies and regularities in their own scientific activity. The current article presents the results of a study of the application's usability and functionality as well as attempts to define different user groups. A survey about the interface was sent to select researchers employed at Nicolaus Copernicus University. The results were used to answer the question as to whether such a specialized visualization tool can significantly augment the individual information space of the contemporary researcher.
