Gary Westfahl's essay on 'The Case Against Space' suggests that space travel should be encouraged to give humans a chance to explore distant and unknown regions. Westfahl also suggests that humanity should also establish themselves in outer space to prevent planetary disasters. However, critics argue that there are 'inherent human drives' that would interfere with the effectivity of space exploration. However, Westfahl suggests that with science fiction, his proposal can be realized partially.

Essays collected by George Edgar Slusser, et al, called 'Immortal Engines: Life Extension and Immortality in Science Fiction and Fantasy,' depicts immortality in relation to life and literature. The compilation is divided into three parts. 'Approaches to Immortality' is about reproduction, cryonics and cloning. 'Science and Immortality' is about scientific research for the extension of life and 'Literature and Immortality' is a collection of literary works which depicts the mysteries associated with mortality.

Works such as Surreal 3000, Api 2967, Les Nomades and Les Tours de Babylone warned about the evils of uncontrolled progress. The two works treat humanity as a transitory part of the evolutionary process and not as its putative finality. In both situations, humans resist the idea of changing the physical being with that of aliens.

Susan Sontag's essay 'The Imagination of Disaster' outlined the themes which characterized science fiction films of the 1950s and 60s. Among these themes, disaster and global atomic death were the most dominant. However, science fiction films have gone beyond the disaster genre and have progressed through themes such as the preparation for nuclear war and its survival, encounters with post-nuclear aliens, the experience of nuclear war and its aftereffects and man's future survival long after a nuclear war.
