This edited volume reveals a reflective culmination of the Socioscientific Issues (SSI) framework that examines past, present, and future trends along with advances in the field of science education. It presents, for the first time, what the precursors and nascent features of the framework entailed and examines the underlying presuppositions that have guided this research program as it matured into present day conceptualizations and cutting-edge advances of the SSI framework along with implications for the future. More precisely, the volume examines what the impetus was for the factors preceding the framework, how it came to be formalized into a conceptual and theoretical framework, the philosophical, sociological, and psychological underpinnings of the framework, its role with respect to moral education in the context of science education, and what it means to pursue moral inquiry and epistemic insight in the practice of science teaching and learning through SSI. It offers global insights and perspectives of trends related to SSI from 40 scholars representing 16 nations.

It is crucial to find ways to bind our deep past to our lives today. Presenting our story, and our collective history, some human evolution exhibits reach an audience of millions each year. An understanding of evolution is fundamental to modern biology, and a lack of knowledge of basic principles has practical consequences, including impairing reception of health messages. The goal of the volume is to stimulate discussion of how the presentation of evolution, and in particular human evolution, can be improved, contributing to scientific literacy and engagement with evolutionary science. To enhance relevance to a broader public, the author argues that incorporation of evolutionary medicine and clearer explanations of ancestry and human biological variation are needed. The surveyed museums include four in Texas, the author's home state, seven additional renowned U.S. museums, and the Natural History Museum in London. Some of the 35 interviewees are prominent academic researchers; other contribute their expertise in design, art, and education. Topics discussed include exhibit content and changing exhibits, the ideal vs. reality in exhibit creation, self-assessments of exhibits, education and “edutainment,” and exhibit content intersections with religion, politics, and the history of representations of race / human biological variation. This book examines the importance of education in the European context, from knowledge acquisition to its instrumental nature. It provides a short history of education of schools around the world before delving into the comparisons of European education systems through exploration of their organization, teaching methods, attendance models and public versus private provision and costs. Information Sciences and Technology (IST) is a rapidly developing, interdisciplinary area of university research and educational programs. This book showcases a case study of the development of a generalist early childhood education (ECE) teacher into a confident and competent teacher of science in early childhood with support from a mentor. The book describes the collection of the Museum Engines and Mechanisms of the University of Palermo, Italy, one of the most important and heterogeneous collections of engines and mechanisms in Europe, the first one in Italy to be awarded as Mechanical Engineering Heritage Collection by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Thanks to its numerous items, this book showcases the evolution of fluid machinery and applied mechanics, from steam engines up to turbojet engines, as well as hybrid system, giving several technical and historical information about its most important engines, which are described in detail through pictures and original drawings. The Museum preserves and makes freely available this almost unique collection of more than 300 engines, didactic models, and technical equipment, including various unique exemplars, continuously enhanced thanks to donations and through restoration activities carried out in a dedicated laboratory of the Museum. As a result of a great deal of philological research carried out on the documents collected in the Museum's archive, as well as in other institutional and corporate historical archives, this book serves as the reference tool of the collection and, more generally, of the Museum itself. This book presents the first interdisciplinary study of Alessandro Piccolomini's two early astronomical works – De la Sfera del Mondo and De le Stelle Fisse. First published in Venice in 1540, the two treatises are amongst the earliest scientific texts written in the vernacular (Italian) and were specifically composed to make astronomical principles and practices available to a lay reader. The book includes modern editions of the original Italian texts and an English translation of both treatises (all appended as Electronic Supplementary Material to the online edition), while also examining the contents of each treatise in depth. It explores the way in which Piccolomini addresses the theoretical underpinnings of the science of astronomy in his De la Sfera del Mondo by providing a version of Sacrobosco's De sphaera, which he has expanded and updated to include the views of more recent natural philosophers and astronomers. The book also presents an extended study ofDe le Stelle Fisse and the unique method that Piccolomini devised for observing the stars, as well as explanatory notes on the sources behind his explanations of the mythographic sources of each constellation. In addition to this, the book presents a detailed examination of the cultural context in which Piccolomini wrote his treatises, focussing on such issues as how astronomy was taught in Italian universities in the 16th-century; the on-going debates on the viability of Italian as language as a means for discussing scientific ideas; and how Piccolomini navigated through the competitive and complicated world of book production in 16th-century Venice. Given that Piccolomini originally dedicated both treatises to his female friend, the Sienese aristocrat Laudomia Forteguerri, there is also a discussion of the mysteries behind their personal relationship; of the dynamics of Sienese society at the time; and, in particular, the role that the Sienese Accademia degli Intronati played in Piccolomini's own intellectual development and the composition of his astronomical treatises. This book presents the work of academics who contributed their work at the International Science Education Conference (ISEC) 2021, in alignment with the conference theme'20/20 Vision for Science Education Research.'Collectively, the chapters aim to evoke intellectual dialogues on current and future trends in science education. This book presents the first detailed scientific examination of Alessandro Piccolomini's two early astronomical works – De la Sfera del Mondo and De le Stelle Fisse. First published in Venice in 1540, the two treatises are amongst the earliest scientific texts written in the vernacular (Italian) and were specifically composed to make astronomical principles and practices available to a lay reader. Whereas De la Sfera del Mondo is essentially an updated adaptation of the theoretical astronomical material contained in Sacrobosco's De Sphaera, this book examines his views on a number of key topics – such as precession, the motion of the solar apogee and the size and distance of the planets from Earth. The author also presents a radical reassessment of De le Stelle Fisse, focusing on the innovative methods Piccolomini employed to create a viewer-centric approach for identifying the stars. As such, Piccolomini's guide to the heavens should be seen as a distant forerunner of the successful genre of elementary handbooks that were developed in the late 18th century, and which remain popular with amateur stargazers even in the 21st century. The book also addresses how Piccolomini's treatises were used by contemporary astronomers by examining the manuscript notes that were left in various surviving copies of his books. It provides a convincing explanation of the unique directional notation on his stellar maps and assesses the relative accuracy of his stellar co-ordinates against contemporary and modern ephemerides and pictorial sources. It also argues that Piccolomini probably designed his distinctive series of maps of the constellations and the related Tables by using a celestial globe to compile his astronomical data. Finally, the author examines the series of refinements and corrections in the successive editions of Piccolomini's two treatises, thereby showing the extent to which his two early astronomical treatises remained an on-going enterprise for over 60 years. Ökonomische Modelle werden durch bewusste Reduktion der Komplexität des Betrachteten mit dem Ziel des Erkenntnisgewinns entwickelt. Mithilfe von mathematischen Modellierungen können ökonomische Modelle exakter gefasst werden. Dieses Resultat ist ein wichtiges Werkzeug bei der Ermittlung und Darstellung von Systemzusammenhängen. Durch die Visualisierung der mathematischen Modellierungen mit dem Achsendiagramm werden abstrakte Zusammenhänge erkennbar und diskutierbar. Deshalb finden ökonomische Achsendiagramme in der Schule unter anderem als Hilfsmittel zur systematischen Betrachtung einzelner Einflussfaktoren eines komplexen Interaktionssystems, wie beispielsweise der Preisbildung auf Märkten, Einsatz. Die Visualisierung des ökonomischen Modells der Preisbildung auf Märkten mithilfe des Preis-Mengen-Diagramms kann dabei die ökonomischen Verständnisprozesse fördern, sie aber auch behindern. Inwieweit das Preis-Mengen-Diagramm somit Hilfsmittel und Hürde im Wirtschaftsunterricht darstellt, wird in diesem Buch untersucht. Dafür werden Lernschwierigkeiten von Schüler•innen beim Umgang mit und dem Wissen über die mathematische Modellierung des ökonomischen Modells der Preisbildung im vollkommenen Markt und dessen Visualisierung durch das Preis-Mengen-Diagramm identifiziert. Darauf aufbauend werden Implikationen für den Wirtschaftsunterricht abgeleitet.

This textbook introduces special relativity with a focus on a profound understanding of the physics behind the theory. Die Ausgangslage dieser Analyse sind unterschiedliche Lernverfahren in der beruflichen Weiterbildung in Deutschland. Untersucht wird, wie diese sich auf den Lernerfolg der Lernenden auswirken. Es gilt, den Zielkonflikt zwischen den Anforderungen der Teilnehmenden und den Angeboten der Weiterbildungsanbieter zu lösen. Eine wesentliche Aufgabe ist es, die Lerntypen der Lernenden zu ermitteln und sich auf dieser Basis geeignete Lernverfahren zu erarbeiten. Daraus wird die Forschungsfrage abgeleitet, wie effizient und effektiv Blended-Learning-Lernverfahren sind und wie diese sich im Lernprozess auf den Lernerfolg auswirken. Das Ergebnis spiegelt sich in einer Empfehlung von Lernverfahren wider, die sich als effizient und effektiv aus der Sicht der Lernenden unter Berücksichtigung der jeweiligen Einflussfaktoren erweisen.

At present, we have been living in an ice age for around 2.5 million years, a geological epoch in which there is ice on Earth and in which the curve of the global mean temperature is subject to significant fluctuations (current trend: temperature increase). At nearly 16 million square kilometers, about ten percent of the land surface is currently covered by glacial ice-and glacial ice plays a major role in shaping landscapes. This compact textbook sharpens the eye for such landscapes. It makes the forms and the shaping processes comprehensible, which the author illustrates with numerous regional examples, especially from Central Europe, such as the North German Plain and the Alpine foothills, but also from Iceland. What traces have the glaciers and their meltwaters left behind? What formation processes can be inferred? How can recent climate history, in particular that of the Ice Age, be reconstructed? It is exciting to look at current developments in glaciated areas and also to take a look at the (climate) future of the Earth. For example, the question arises as to what influence glaciers have on sea level and on future climate change. Mit der Einführung des digitalen Cockpits wurde der Arbeitsplatz für Luftfahrzeugbesatzungen im Bereich Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion neu erfunden. Moderne und zukünftige Luftfahrzeuge lassen sich nahezu problemlos steuern, verfügen jedoch über Schnittstellen, welche die Besatzung mit zuvor unbekannten Informationen versorgen. Menschen verlieren den Blick für das Wesentliche, nämlich die Wahrnehmung der relevanten Umweltfaktoren zum Schaffen eines Situationsbewusstseins. Dynamische und komplexe Situationen gilt es intuitiv zu erfassen, um zeitkritische Entscheidungen treffen zu können. Irrelevante Informationen müssen hingegen vernachlässigt werden, um die Auswahl einer Handlung nicht durch Analyseprozesse aufzuhalten. Das vorliegende Ausbildungskonzept wurde im Flugsimulator-Experiment mittels Teiltheorien validiert, welche sich insbesondere auf die Schaffung des mentalen Modells der Umwelt fokussieren. Die Anwendbarkeit des Konzeptes gilt für Tätigkeitsfelder, in denen eine langjährige Ausbildung unter verschieden Umweltsituationen, welche wenig Fehler verzeihen, nötig ist. Diese Arbeit dient einerseits als Lehrwerk und Nachschlagewerk in der Ausbildungsdurchführung und Interaktion zwischen Lehrenden und Lernenden. This book celebrates the 15th anniversary of the bi-annual symposium series Mathematics and its Connections to the Arts and Sciences (MACAS), which was first held in 2005 following the continued collaboration of an international group of researchers from ICME Topic Study Group 21. The present book project on Research Design, which is planned in English, is intended to create an innovative textbook that can be used at university undergraduate and graduate levels in internationally oriented education in the German-speaking countries. This textbook shall provide comprehensive guidance for students when tackling their (applied) research papers. Instead of reiterating qualitative and quantitative methods it focuses on how to come up with an appropriate research design that allows the student to make the intended intellectual contribution. Starting from the desired (hypothetical) conclusion or statement the student will be guided through the process of finding the appropriate Research Question that will be answered by such a statement and the required Research Design consisting of data collection and data analysis, that allows for such a statement as the conclusion of the study. Common Research Designs in Business and Management, i.e. well beyond the standard ResearchDesigns of Social Sciences and curtailed to the focus area, will be described with regard to their suitability to answer specific kinds of questions as well as the idiosyncrasies of the these Designs and their impact on the written research reports. Examples for each Research Design will be provided as well as guidance about how to write about such research.
