We used an online academic-advising program to examine the effects of preparatory training designed to elicit high states of learning-goal orientation and low states of avoid goal orientation. Results indicate that training was effective in some cases for manipulating states of goal orientation. The training did not directly affect behaviors as anticipated; however, perceptions of partner behaviors showed effects. Moreover, learning-goal orientation was related to advisee postprogram academic self-efficacy. Thus, individuals working with such mentoring programs should consider implementing goal-oriented preparatory training programs to increase mentoring relationship effectiveness. The present study compared the relative impact of peer-mentoring that took place either face-to-face or through electronic chat. Proteges were 106 college freshmen randomly assigned to a senior college student mentor and to one of the two communication modes. Fifty-one mentors interacted with one of these proteges face-to-face and one solely through electronic chat. Electronic chat resulted in less psychosocial support, career support, and post-mentoring protege self-efficacy for those with male but not female mentors. Analyses of coded transcripts revealed that males condensed their language to a greater extent than did females in the electronic chat condition relative to the face-to-face condition. Dyads in the electronic chat condition had more interactive dialogue than did those in the face-to-face condition. Finally, dialogue interactivity predicted post-mentoring self-efficacy but only for those who communicated through electronic chat.

Background: Little research to date has examined the quality of data obtained from resident performance evaluations. This study sought to address this need and compared inter-rater reliability obtained from norm-referenced and criterion-referenced evaluation scaling approaches for faculty completing resident performance evaluations. Methods: Resident performance evaluation data were examined from 2 institutions (3 programs, 2 internal medicine and 1 surgery; 426 residents in total), with 4 evaluation forms: 2 criterion-referenced (1 with an additional norm-referenced item) and 2 norm-referenced. Faculty inter-rater reliability was calculated with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) (1,10) for each competency area within the form. ICCs were transformed to z-scores, and 95% CIs were computed. Reliabilities for each evaluation form and competency, averages within competency, and averages within scaling type were examined. Results: Inter-rater reliability averages were higher for all competencies that used criterion-referenced scaling relative to those that used norm-referenced scaling. Aggregate scores of all independent categories (competencies and the items assessing overall competence) for criterion-referenced scaling demonstrated higher reliability (z=1.37, CI 1.26-1.48) than norm-referenced scaling (z=0.88, CI 0.77-0.99). Moreover, examination of the distributions of composite scores (average of all competencies and raters for each individual being rated) suggested that the criterion-referenced evaluations better represented the performance continuum. Conclusion: Criterion-referenced evaluation approaches appear to provide superior inter-rater reliability relative to norm-referenced evaluation scaling approaches. Although more research is needed to identify resident evaluation best practices, using criterion-referenced scaling may provide more valid data than norm-referenced scaling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

User-chosen passwords reflecting common strategies and patterns ease memorisation but offer uncertain and often weak security, while system-assigned passwords provide higher security guarantee but suffer from poor memorability. We thus examine the technique to enhance password memorability that incorporates a scientific understanding of long-term memory. In particular, we examine the efficacy of providing users with verbal cues—real-life facts corresponding to system-assigned keywords. We also explore the usability gain of including images related to the keywords along with verbal cues. In our multi-session lab study with 52 participants, textual recognition-based scheme offering verbal cues had a significantly higher login success rate (94.23%) compared to the control condition, i.e. textual recognition without verbal cues (61.54%). When users were provided with verbal cues, adding images contributed to faster recognition of the assigned keywords, and thus had an overall improvement in usability. So, we conducted a field study with 54 participants to further examine the usability of graphical recognition-based scheme offering verbal cues, which showed an average login success rate of 98% in a real-life setting and an overall improvement in login performance with more login sessions. In the current study, we sought to further our understanding of the relations between various types of protégé-reported mentoring functions (psychosocial and career support and role modeling [RM]) by conducting a meta-analysis. We examined the relationships among these functions and investigated their relationships with expected mentorship outcomes. There is still a great deal left for us to understand regarding how these functions relate to outcomes and what these relationships mean. We expanded upon previous meta-analyses in the following ways: We included RM functions in addition to psychosocial and career support functions, corrected for unreliability of the function scales in addition to sampling error, and examined the relations of these functions with one another. Results show that all the mentoring functions were related to outcomes, with RM being the strongest predictor. Finally, we identified and conceptually analyzed numerous moderators of these relations. The construct of core self-evaluations has been recognized as one of the most significant dispositional predictors of job satisfaction. The current study meta-analyzed the relationship between core self-evaluations and job satisfaction and found a moderate, positive relationship. Characteristics of the samples (such as gender, race, age, and organizational tenure), and characteristics of the research design (such as type of core self-evaluation measurement used and author type) were examined as potential moderators of the relationship between core self-evaluations and job satisfaction in this study. Mentoring relationships are frequently used as tools to increase employee productivity. However, little is understood in how to best pair mentors and protégés in formal mentoring programs. This study examined the extent to which individual demographic and dispositional variables interact with various mentor characteristics to predict ratings of the profiles of those mentors. The results of this study are consistent with the notion that gender, race, and similarity of mentors and protégés may be an important consideration when the protégé believes that psychosocial support functions are valuable. Although many academic organizations offer formal mentoring programs, little is known about how individual characteristics of peer mentors and their protégés interact to reduce new-student stress. First-year college students participated in a peer-mentoring program designed to reduce stress. The results of this study demonstrated that protégés who received greater psychosocial and career support showed greater stress reduction. Additionally, protégés with a higher avoid performance goal orientation showed lesser stress reduction. Mentor avoid performance goal orientation was positively associated with stress reduction for protégés high on avoid performance goal orientation, but negatively associated for those low on avoid performance goal orientation. The current study attempted to broaden our understanding of communication processes that occur in academic mentoring relationships. Using the Linguistic Inquiry Word Count (LIWC) program, it was found that mentors and proté gés would mirror one another's communications. Moreover, mentors and protégés reacted differently in regards to their perceptions of what occurred during the course of the relationship relative to the different communication indicators. For example, mentor and proté gé emotion-related communications were important for protégés, whereas cognitive-related communications were important for mentors.
