Search

ASASSN-21qj is a distant Sun-like star that recently began an episode of deep dimming events after no prior recorded variability. Here we examine archival and newly obtained optical and near-infrared data of this star. The deep aperiodic dimming and absence of previous infrared excess are reminiscent of KIC 8462852 (``Boyajian's Star''). The observed occultations are consistent with a circumstellar cloud of sub-micron-sized dust grains composed of amorphous pyroxene, with a minimum mass of $1.50~\pm~0.04\times10^{-9}~M_{\oplus}$ derived from the deepest occultations, and a minimum grain size of $0.29^{+0.01}_{-0.18}~\mu$m assuming a power law size distribution. We further identify the first evidence of near-infrared excess in this system from NEOWISE 3.4 and 4.6~$\mu$m observations. The excess emission implies a total circumstellar dust mass of around $10^{-6} M_{\oplus}$, comparable to the extreme, variable discs associated with terrestrial planet formation around young stars. The quasiperiodic recurrence of deep dips and the inferred dust temperature (ranging from 1800 to 700~K across the span of observations) independently point to an orbital distance of $\simeq$0.2~au for the dust, supporting the occulting material and excess emission being causally linked. Recent abrupt changes of CW Leonis may indicate that we are witnessing the moment that the central carbon star is evolving off the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) and entering into the pre-planetary nebula (PPN) phase. The recent appearance of a red compact peak at the predicted stellar position is possibly an unveiling event of the star, and the radial beams emerging from the stellar position resemble the feature of the PPN Egg Nebula. The increase of light curve over two decades is also extraordinary, and it is possibly related to the phase transition. Decadal-period variations are further found in the residuals of light curves, in the relative brightness of radial beams, and in the extended halo brightness distribution. Further monitoring of the recent dramatic and decadal-scale changes of this most well-known carbon star CW Leonis at the tip of AGB is still highly essential, and will help us gain a more concrete understanding on the conditions for transition between the late stellar evolutionary phases., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Winds of Stars and Exoplanets. We follow our first paper with an analysis of the ensemble of the extensive pre-explosion ground- and space-based infrared observations of the red supergiant (RSG) progenitor candidate for the nearby core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf in Messier 101, together with optical data prior to explosion obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We have confirmed the association of the progenitor candidate with the SN, as well as constrained the metallicity at the SN site, based on SN observations with instruments at Gemini-North. The internal host extinction to the SN has also been confirmed from a high-resolution Keck spectrum. We fit the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) for the star, accounting for its intrinsic variability, with dust radiative-transfer modeling, which assume a silicate-rich dust shell ahead of the underlying stellar photosphere. The star is heavily dust-obscured, likely the dustiest progenitor candidate yet encountered. We found median estimates of the star's effective temperature and luminosity of 2770 K and 9.0e4 L_Sun, with 68% credible intervals of 2340--3150 K and (7.5--10.9)e4 L_sun. The candidate may have a Galactic RSG analog, IRC -10414, with a strikingly similar SED and luminosity. Via comparison with single-star evolutionary models we have constrained the initial mass of the progenitor candidate from 12 M_sun to as high as 14 M_sun. We have had available to us an extraordinary view of the SN 2023ixf progenitor candidate, which should be further followed up in future years with HST and the James Webb Space Telescope., Comment: 40 pages, substantive modifications relative to the previous, although the overall conclusions remain the same; to appear in AAS Journals

Observational evidence points to a red supergiant (RSG) progenitor for SN 2023ixf. The progenitor candidate has been detected in archival images at wavelengths (>0.6 micron) where RSGs typically emit profusely. This object is distinctly variable in the infrared (IR). We characterize the variability using pre-explosion mid-IR (3.6 and 4.5 micron) Spitzer and ground-based near-IR (JHKs) archival data jointly covering 19 yr. The IR light curves exhibit significant variability with RMS amplitudes in the range of 0.2-0.4 mag, increasing with decreasing wavelength. From a robust period analysis of the more densely sampled Spitzer data, we measure a period of 1091+/-71 days. We demonstrate using Gaussian Process modeling that this periodicity is also present in the near-IR light curves, thus indicating a common physical origin, which is likely pulsational instability. We use a period-luminosity relation for RSGs to derive a value of M_K=-11.58+/-0.31 mag. Assuming a late M spectral type, this corresponds to log(L/L_sun)=5.27+/-0.12 at T_eff=3200 K and to log(L/L_sun)=5.37+/-0.12 at T_eff=3500 K. This gives an independent estimate of the progenitor's luminosity, unaffected by uncertainties in extinction and distance. Assuming the progenitor candidate underwent enhanced dust-driven mass-loss during the time of these archival observations, and using an empirical period-luminosity-based mass-loss prescription, we obtain a mass-loss rate of around (2-4)x10^-4 M_sun/yr. Comparing the above luminosity with stellar evolution models, we infer an initial mass for the progenitor candidate of 20+/-4 M_sun, making this one of the most massive progenitors for a Type II SN detected to-date., Comment: 20 pages, 2 tables, accepted to ApJ

The persistence of planetary systems after their host stars evolve into their post-main sequence phase is poorly constrained by observations. Many young white dwarf systems exhibit infrared excess emission and/or spectral absorption lines associated with a reservoir of dust (or planetesimals) and its accretion. However, most white dwarfs are too cool to sufficiently heat any circumstellar dust to detectable levels of emission. The Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) is a young, nearby planetary nebula; observations at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths revealed excess emission associated with its central white dwarf (WD 2226-210). The origin of this excess is ambiguous. It could be a remnant planetesimal belt, a cloud of comets, or the remnants of material shed during the post-asymptotic giant branch phase. Here we combine infrared (SOFIA, Spitzer, Herschel ) and millimetre (ALMA) observations of the system to determine the origin of this excess using multi-wavelength imaging and radiative transfer modelling. We find the data are incompatible with a compact remnant planetesimal belt or post-asymptotic giant branch disc, and conclude the dust most likely originates from deposition by a cometary cloud. The measured dust mass, and lifetime of the constituent grains, implies disruption of several thousand Hale-Bopp equivalent comets per year to fuel the observed excess emission around the Helix Nebula's white dwarf., Comment: 15 pages, 3 tables, 4 figures, accepted for publication in AJ

Six images of IRC+10216 taken by the Hubble Space Telescope at three epochs in 2001, 2011, and 2016 are compared in the rest frame of the central carbon star. An accurate astrometry has been achieved with the help of Gaia Data Release 2. The positions of the carbon star in the individual epochs are determined using its known proper motion, defining the rest frame of the star. In 2016, a local brightness peak with compact and red nature is detected at the stellar position. A comparison of the color maps between 2016 and 2011 epochs reveals that the reddest spot moved along with the star, suggesting a possibility of its being the dusty material surrounding the carbon star. Relatively red, ambient region is distributed in an $\Omega$ shape and well corresponds to the dusty disk previously suggested based on near-infrared polarization observations. In a larger scale, differential proper motion of multiple ring-like pattern in the rest frame of the star is used to derive the average expansion velocity of transverse wind components, resulting in $\sim$ 12.5 km s$^{-1}$ ($d$/123 pc), where $d$ is the distance to IRC+10216. Three dimensional geometry is implied from its comparison with the line-of-sight wind velocity determined from half-widths of submillimeter emission line profiles of abundant molecules. Uneven temporal variations in brightness for different searchlight beams and anisotropic distribution of extended halo are revisited in the context of the stellar light illumination through a porous envelope with postulated longer-term variations for a period of $\lesssim10$ years., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The debris disc around HD 172555 was recently imaged in near-infrared polarised scattered light by the Very Large Telescope's Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch instrument. Here we present optical aperture polarisation measurements of HD 172555 by the HIgh Precision Polarimetric Instrument (HIPPI), and its successor HIPPI-2 on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We seek to refine constraints on the disc's constituent dust grains by combining our polarimetric measurements with available infrared and millimetre photometry to model the scattered light and continuum emission from the disc. We model the disc using the 3D radiative transfer code Hyperion, assuming the orientation and extent of the disc as obtained from the SPHERE observation. After correction for the interstellar medium contribution, our multi-wavelength HIPPI/-2 observations (both magnitude and orientation) are consistent with the recent SPHERE polarisation measurement with a fractional polarisation $p = 62.4 \pm 5.2$~ppm at 722.3 nm, and a position angle $\theta = 67 \pm 3^{\circ}$. The multi-wavelength polarisation can be adequately replicated by compact, spherical dust grains (i.e. from Mie theory) that are around 1.2 $\mu$m in size, assuming astronomical silicate composition, or 3.9 $\mu$m assuming a composition derived from radiative transfer modelling of the disc. We were thus able to reproduce both the spatially resolved disc emission and polarisation with a single grain composition model and size distribution., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 12 tables. The thermal emission of dust is one of the most important tracers of the interstellar medium: multi-wavelength photometry in the far-infrared (FIR) and submillimeter (submm) can be fitted with a model, providing estimates of the dust mass. The fit results depend on the assumed value for FIR/submm opacity, which in most models - due to the scarcity, until recently, of experimental measurements - is extrapolated from shorter wavelengths. Lab measurements of dust analogues, however, show that FIR opacities are usually higher than the values used in models and depend on temperature, which suggests that dust mass estimates may be biased. To test the extent of this bias, we create multi-wavelength synthetic photometry for dusty galaxies at different temperatures and redshifts, using experimental results for FIR/submm dust opacity, then we fit the synthetic data using standard dust models. We find that the dust masses recovered by typical models are overestimated by a factor 2 to 20, depending on how the experimental opacities are treated. If the experimental dust samples are accurate analogues of interstellar dust, therefore, current dust masses are overestimated by up to a factor 20. Betelgeuse is the nearest Red Supergiant star and it underwent an unusually deep minimum at optical wavelengths during its most recent pulsation cycle. We present submillimetre observations taken by the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and Atacama Pathfinder Experiment over a time span of 13 years including the optical dimming. We find that Betelgeuse has also dimmed by \sim20\% at these longer wavelengths during this optical minimum. Using radiative-transfer models, we show that this is likely due to changes in the photosphere (luminosity) of the star as opposed to the surrounding dust as was previously suggested in the literature., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters June 14th 2020, 7 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

This white paper discusses recent progress in the field of evolved stars, primarily highlighting the contributions of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. It discusses the ongoing project, the \emph{Nearby Evolved Stars Survey} (NESS), and the potential to build upon NESS in the next decade. It then outlines a number of science cases which may become feasible with the proposed 850\,$\mu$m camera which is due to become available at the JCMT in late 2022. These include mapping the extended envelopes of evolved stars, including in polarisation, and time-domain monitoring of their variations. The improved sensitivity of the proposed instrument will facilitate statistical studies that put the morphology, polarisation properties and sub-mm variability in perspective with a relatively modest commitment of time that would be impossible with current instrumentation. Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in our Universe, but remain poorly understood in many branches of astrophysics. A key tool for inferring astrophysical magnetic field properties is dust emission polarimetry. The James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) is planning a new 850$\mu$m camera consisting of an array of 7272 paired Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs), which will inherently acquire linear polarization information. The camera will allow wide-area polarization mapping of dust emission at 14$^{\prime\prime}$-resolution, allowing magnetic field properties to be studied in a wide range of environments, including all stages of the star formation process, Asymptotic Giant Branch stellar envelopes and planetary nebula, external galaxies including starburst galaxies and analogues for the Milky Way, and the environments of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Time domain studies of AGN and protostellar polarization variability will also become practicable. Studies of the polarization properties of the interstellar medium will also allow detailed investigation of dust grain properties and physics. These investigations would benefit from a potential future upgrade adding 450$\mu$m capability to the camera, which would allow inference of spectral indices for polarized dust emission in a range of environments. We present a CO(3-2) survey of selected regions in the M31 disc as part of the JCMT large programme, HARP and SCUBA-2 High-Resolution Terahertz Andromeda Galaxy Survey (HASHTAG). The 12 CO(3-2) fields in this survey cover a total area of 60 square arcminutes, spanning a deprojected radial range of 2 - 14 kpc across the M31 disc. Combining these observations with existing IRAM 30m CO(1-0) observations and JCMT CO(3-2) maps of the nuclear region of M31, as well as dust temperature and star formation rate surface density maps, we are able to explore the radial distribution of the CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) integrated intensity ratio (R31) and its relationship with dust temperature and star formation. We find that the value of R31 between 2 - 9 kpc galactocentric radius is 0.14, significantly lower than what is seen in the nuclear ring at ~1 kpc (R31 ~ 0.8), only to rise again to 0.27 for the fields centred on the 10 kpc star forming ring. We also found that R31 is positively correlated with dust temperature, with Spearman's rank correlation coefficient $\rho$ = 0.55. The correlation between star formation rate surface density and CO(3--2) intensity is much stronger than with CO(1-0), with $\rho$ = 0.54 compared to -0.05, suggesting that the CO(3-2) line traces warmer and denser star forming gas better. This white paper gives a brief summary of the time domain science that has been performed with the JCMT in recent years and highlights the opportunities for continuing work in this field over the next decade. The main focus of this document is the JCMT Transient Survey, a large program initiated in 2015 to measure the frequency and amplitude of variability events associated with protostars in nearby star-forming regions. After summarising the major accomplishments so far, an outline is given for extensions to the current survey, featuring a discussion on what will be possible with the new 850 micron camera that is expected to be installed in late 2022. We present the highest resolution single-dish submillimetre observations of the detached shell source U Antliae to date. The observations were obtained at $450~\micron$ and $850~\micron$ with SCUBA-2 instrument on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as part of the Nearby Evolved Stars Survey. The emission at $850~\micron$ peaks at $40\arcsec$ with hints of a second peak seen at $\sim 20\arcsec$. The emission can be traced out to a radius of $56\arcsec$ at a $3\sigma$ level. The outer peak observed at $850~\micron$ aligns well with the peak observed at Herschel/PACS wavelengths. With the help of spectral energy distribution fitting and radiative transfer calculations of multiple-shell models for the circumstellar envelope, we explore the various shell structures and the variation of grain sizes along the in the circumstellar envelope. We determine a total shell dust mass of $(2.0 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$ and established that the thermal pulse which gave rise to the detached shell occurred 3500 $\pm$ 500 years ago., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the sub-mm variability of two of the most well studied AGB stars, IRC+10216 and $o$ Ceti. The data are obtained at $450~\micron$ and $850~\micron$ as part of pointing calibration observations for the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope's SCUBA-2 instrument over a span of 7 years. The periods are derived using non-parametric methods, \texttt{Gatspy Supersmoother} and \texttt{P4J} in order not to assume an underlying shape to the periodicity. These were compared to two Lomb-Scargle parametric methods. We find that for both sources and wavelengths the periods derived from all methods are consistent within $1\sigma$. The $850~\micron$ phase folded light curves of IRC+10216 show a time lag of $\sim 540$ days compared to its optical counterpart. We explore the origins of the sub-mm variability and the phase lag using radiative transfer models. Combining the modelling with findings in the literature, we find that the sub-mm emission and phase lag can be partially attributed to the dust formation/destruction cycle. A second, unknown mechanism must be invoked; we defer an investigation of the origin and nature of this mechanism to a future work., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the SCUBA-2 850 ${\mu}m$ component of JINGLE, the new JCMT large survey for dust and gas in nearby galaxies, which with 193 galaxies is the largest targeted survey of nearby galaxies at 850 ${\mu}m$. We provide details of our SCUBA-2 data reduction pipeline, optimised for slightly extended sources, and including a calibration model adjusted to match conventions used in other far-infrared data. We measure total integrated fluxes for the entire JINGLE sample in 10 infrared/submillimetre bands, including all WISE, Herschel-PACS, Herschel-SPIRE and SCUBA-2 850 ${\mu}m$ maps, statistically accounting for the contamination by CO(J=3-2) in the 850 ${\mu}m$ band. Of our initial sample of 193 galaxies, 191 are detected at 250 ${\mu}m$ with a $\geq$ 5${\sigma}$ significance. In the SCUBA-2 850 ${\mu}m$ band we detect 126 galaxies with $\geq$ 3${\sigma}$ significance. The distribution of the JINGLE galaxies in far-infrared/sub-millimetre colour-colour plots reveals that the sample is not well fit by single modified-blackbody models that assume a single dust-emissivity index $(\beta)$. Instead, our new 850 ${\mu}m$ data suggest either that a large fraction of our objects require $\beta < 1.5$, or that a model allowing for an excess of sub-mm emission (e.g., a broken dust emissivity law, or a very cold dust component 10 K) is required. We provide relations to convert far-infrared colours to dust temperature and $\beta$ for JINGLE-like galaxies. For JINGLE the FIR colours correlate more strongly with star-formation rate surface-density rather than the stellar surface-density, suggesting heating of dust is greater due to younger rather than older stellar-populations, consistent with the low proportion of early-type galaxies in the sample., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS; data available at http://www.star.ucl.ac.uk/JINGLE/

JINGLE is a new JCMT legacy survey designed to systematically study the cold interstellar medium of galaxies in the local Universe. As part of the survey we perform 850um continuum measurements with SCUBA-2 for a representative sample of 193 Herschel-selected galaxies with M*>10^9Msun, as well as integrated CO(2-1) line fluxes with RxA3m for a subset of 90 of these galaxies. The sample is selected from fields covered by the Herschel-ATLAS survey that are also targeted by the MaNGA optical integral-field spectroscopic survey. The new JCMT observations combined with the multi-wavelength ancillary data will allow for the robust characterization of the properties of dust in the nearby Universe, and the benchmarking of scaling relations between dust, gas, and global galaxy properties. In this paper we give an overview of the survey objectives and details about the sample selection and JCMT observations, present a consistent 30 band UV-to-FIR photometric catalog with derived properties, and introduce the JINGLE Main Data Release (MDR). We present near-IR imaging polarimetry of five classical FU Ori-type objects (FU Ori, V1057 Cyg, V1515 Cyg, V1735 Cyg, Z CMa) with a $\sim$0\farcs1 resolution observed using HiCIAO+AO188 at Subaru Telescope. We observed scattered light associated with circumstellar dust around four of them (i.e., all but V1515 Cyg). Their polarized intensity distribution shows a variety of morphologies with arms, tails or streams, spikes and fragmented distributions, many of which were reported in our previous paper. The morphologies of these reflection nebulae significantly differ from many other normal young stellar objects (Class I-II objects). These structures are attributed to gravitationally unstable disks, trails of clump ejections, dust blown by a wind or a jet, and a stellar companion. We can consistently explain our results with the scenario that their accretion outbursts (FUor outbursts) are triggered by gravitationally fragmenting disks, and with the hypothesis that many low-mass young stellar objects experience such outbursts., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures, accepted by ApJ; resubmitted to astro-ph on August 22, 2018

We present JCMT SCUBA-2 $450\mu$m and $850\mu$m observations of 14 Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars (9 O--rich, 4 C-rich and 1 S--type) and one Red Supergiant (RSG) in the Solar Neighbourhood. We combine these observations with \emph{Herschel}/PACS observations at $70\mu$m and $160\mu$m and obtain azimuthally-averaged surface-brightness profiles and their PSF subtracted residuals. The extent of the SCUBA-2 850 $\mu$m emission ranges from 0.01 to 0.16 pc with an average of $\sim40\%$ of the total flux being emitted from the extended component. By fitting a modified black-body to the four-point SED at each point along the radial profile we derive the temperature ($T$), spectral index of dust emissivity ($\beta$) and dust column density ($\Sigma$) as a function of radius. For all the sources, the density profile deviates significantly from what is expected for a constant mass-loss rate, showing that all the sources have undergone variations in mass-loss during this evolutionary phase. In combination with results from CO line emission, we determined the dust-to-gas mass ratio for all the sources in our sample. We find that, when sources are grouped according to their chemistry, the resulting average dust-to-gas ratios are consistent with the respective canonical values. However we see a range of values with significant scatter which indicate the importance of including spatial information when deriving these numbers., Comment: 18 pages plus 13 pages of supplementary figures. We analyze results from the first eighteen months of monthly sub-mm monitoring of eight star-forming regions in the JCMT Transient Survey. In our search for stochastic variability in 1643 bright peaks, only the previously identified source, EC53, shows behavior well above the expected measurement uncertainty. Another four sources, two disks and two protostars, show moderately-enhanced standard deviations in brightness, as expected for stochastic variables. For the two protostars, this apparent variability is the result of single epochs that are much brighter than the mean. In our search for secular brightness variations that are linear in time, we measure the fractional brightness change per year for 150 bright peaks, fifty of which are protostellar. The ensemble distribution of slopes is well fit by a normal distribution with sigma ~ 0.023. Most sources are not rapidly brightening or fading in the sub-mm. Comparison against time-randomized realizations shows that the width of the distribution is dominated by the uncertainty in the individual brightness measurements of the sources. A toy model for secular variability reveals that an underlying Gaussian distribution of linear fractional brightness change sigma = 0.005 would be unobservable in the present sample, whereas an underlying distribution with sigma = 0.02 is ruled out. Five protostellar sources, 10% of the protostellar sample, are found to have robust secular measures deviating from a constant flux. The sensitivity to secular brightness variations will improve significantly with a larger time sample, with a factor of two improvement expected by the conclusion of our 36-month survey., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 27 pages, 15 figures, 7 tables

Investigating variability at the earliest stages of low-mass star formation is fundamental in understanding how a protostar assembles mass. While many simulations of protostellar disks predict non-steady accretion onto protostars, deeper investigation requires robust observational constraints on the frequency and amplitude of variability events characterised across the observable SED. In this study, we develop methods to robustly analyse repeated observations of an area of the sky for submillimetre variability in order to determine constraints on the magnitude and frequency of deeply embedded protostars. We compare \mbox{850 $\mu$m} JCMT Transient Survey data with archival JCMT Gould Belt Survey data to investigate variability over 2-4 year timescales. Out of 175 bright, independent emission sources identified in the overlapping fields, we find 7 variable candidates, 5 of which we classify as \textit{Strong} and the remaining 2 as \textit{Extended} to indicate the latter are associated with larger-scale structure. For the \textit{Strong} variable candidates, we find an average fractional peak brightness change per year of |4.0|\% yr$^{-1}$ with a standard deviation of $2.7\%\mathrm{\:yr}^{-1}$. In total, 7\% of the protostars associated with \mbox{850 $\mu$m} emission in our sample show signs of variability. Four of the five \textit{Strong} sources are associated with a known protostar. The remaining source is a good follow-up target for an object that is anticipated to contain an enshrouded, deeply embedded protostar. Most protostars have luminosities that are fainter than expected from steady accretion over the protostellar lifetime. The solution to this problem may lie in episodic mass accretion -- prolonged periods of very low accretion punctuated by short bursts of rapid accretion. However, the timescale and amplitude for variability at the protostellar phase is almost entirely unconstrained. In "A JCMT/SCUBA-2 Transient Survey of Protostars in Nearby Star Forming Regions", we are monitoring monthly with SCUBA-2 the sub-mm emission in eight fields within nearby (<500 pc) star forming regions to measure the accretion variability of protostars. The total survey area of ~1.6 sq.deg. includes ~105 peaks with peaks brighter than 0.5 Jy/beam (43 associated with embedded protostars or disks) and 237 peaks of 0.125-0.5 Jy/beam (50 with embedded protostars or disks). Each field has enough bright peaks for flux calibration relative to other peaks in the same field, which improves upon the nominal flux calibration uncertainties of sub-mm observations to reach a precision of ~2-3% rms, and also provides quantified confidence in any measured variability. The timescales and amplitudes of any sub-mm variation will then be converted into variations in accretion rate and subsequently used to infer the physical causes of the variability. This survey is the first dedicated survey for sub-mm variability and complements other transient surveys at optical and near-IR wavelengths, which are not sensitive to accretion variability of deeply embedded protostars., Comment: ApJ, accepted

The tori around active galactic nuclei (AGN) are potential formation sites for large amounts of dust, and they may help resolve the so-called dust budget crisis at high redshift. We investigate the dust composition in 53 of the 87 Palomar Green (PG) quasars showing the 9.7 micron silicate feature in emission. By simultaneously fitting the mid-infrared spectroscopic features and the underlying continuum, we estimate the mass fraction in various amorphous and crystalline dust species. We find that the dust consists predominantly of alumina and amorphous silicates, with a small fraction in crystalline form. The mean crystallinity is 8 +/- 6%, with more than half of the crystallinities greater than 5%, well above the upper limit determined for the Galaxy. The Astropy Project (http://astropy.org) is, in its own words, "a community effort to develop a single core package for Astronomy in Python and foster interoperability between Python astronomy packages." For five years this project has been managed, written, and operated as a grassroots, self-organized, almost entirely volunteer effort while the software is used by the majority of the astronomical community. Despite this, the project has always been and remains to this day effectively unfunded. Further, contributors receive little or no formal recognition for creating and supporting what is now critical software. This paper explores the problem in detail, outlines possible solutions to correct this, and presents a few suggestions on how to address the sustainability of general purpose astronomical software.
