3. Cold cathodes for sealed-off CO2 lasers

Abstract

Cold cathodes for CO2 lasers should possess a very low sputtering rate, have a minimum of negative ions in the sputtering products, and consume no oxygen. These conditions can be satisfied by selecting cathode materials from those elements of group I in the periodic table which form semiconducting oxide layers and then exposing these elements to a reducing gas mixture. Experimental results show that silver, internally oxidized silver-copper alloys, and pure copper satisfy most of these requirements in He-CO2-CO-Xe gas mixtures. Infrared CO and CO2 gas analysis performed on simple gas discharge tubes using such cathodes indicate that laser lives of 10,000 hr can be expected.

6. Cold cathodes for sealed off CO2 lasers

Experimental results of a group of theoretically selected cold cathode materials are presented. These tests indicate Ag-CuO, Cu, and Pt-Cu as three new cold cathode materials for sealed-off CO2 lasers. The power output of a test laser with an Ag-CuO cathode and a gas volume of only 50 cu cm varied from 0.72 W to 1.1 W at 3000 hours and still yields 0.88 W after 8000 hours. Gas discharge tubes with Cu cathodes and a volume of 25 cu cm yield lifetimes in excess of 10,000 hours. Gas analysis results, obtained from a similar tube over a period of 3000 hours, look most promising. A Pt-Cu alloy cathode shows an extremely promising V-I characteristic over a period of 2800 hours.

Abstract

The initial review of the Integrated Arming and Firing Circuits indicated a need for revision to the Specifications, in regard to the plastic packaging. Thick film processing was selected as the method to produce the devices. A computerized testing system was designed to perform the electrical testing on the devices. Packaging problems occurred during the final lot of Engineering Samples and a variety of solutions were tried to correct this. All of the problems were either solved and/or the Specifications were modified to correct them., See also report dated Oct 74, AD-A005 234, and Volume 2 dated Nov 74, AD-A012 842.

Abstract

Breadboard circuit construction showed a need for certain changes to the specifications in regard to component selection. Initial construction of the devices was accomplished with two thin film bonded substrates. This was later changed to a single substrate. A continued series of circuit design problems made it necessary to revise the Specifications in regard to circuit topology and component selection. Failure to pass 30 Kg force in tests required units to be foam filled. A total of 1903 oscillators were made in the Pilot Run., See also Volume 1 dated Nov 74, AD-A012 841.

The Integrated Arming and Firing Circuit involves the fabrication of a thick film circuit substrate, and attachment of transistors and capacitor components, and packaging. Abstract

The inflammatory myopathies are a heterogeneous group of diseases due to autoimmunitary or infective causes. They are diagnosed by clinical electrophysiological features, and muscle biopsy. The autoimmunity group is subdivided in dermatomyositis, polimyositis and inclusion body myositis. The second group caused by viral genesis are called generally "myositis". The two groups have a different prognosis and therapy. The infective group denominated myositis have usually a viral etiology. We have evaluated 6 patients with viral myositis that are studied by physical examination, blood test (CK included), electromyographic pattern and muscle biopsy. The Authors emphasized the role of muscle biopsy for the diagnosis of this pathology and in particular for the myositis.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to understand the epidemiology, disease severity, and microbiology of bronchiolitis in Italy during the 2021–2022 cold season, outside of lockdowns. Before COVID-19, the usual bronchiolitis season in Italy would begin in November and end in April, peaking in February. We performed a prospective observational study in four referral pediatric centers located in different geographical areas in Italy (two in the north, one in the center and one in the south). From 1 July 2021 to 31 January 2022, we collected all new clinical diagnoses of bronchiolitis in children younger than two years of age recording demographic, clinical and microbiological data. A total of 657 children with a clinical diagnosis of bronchiolitis were enrolled; 56% children were admitted and 5.9% required PICU admission. The first cases were detected during the summer, peaking in November 2021 and declining into December 2021 with only a few cases detected in January 2022. RSV was the commonest etiological agent, while SARS-CoV-2 was rarely detected and only since the end of December 2021. Disease severity was similar in children with RSV vs. non-RSV bronchiolitis, and in those with a single infectious agent detected compared with children with co-infections. The 2021–2022 bronchiolitis season in Italy started and peaked earlier than the usual pre-pandemic seasons, but had a shorter duration. Importantly, the current bronchiolitis season was not more severe when data were compared with Italian published data, and SARS-CoV-2 was rarely a cause of bronchiolitis in children younger than 24 months of age.
