CATACLYSMIC variable stars ,TOMOGRAPHY - Abstract
We present a set of Roche tomography reconstructions of the secondary stars in the cataclysmic variables AM Her, QQ Vul, IP Peg and HU Aqr. The image reconstructions show distinct asymmetries in the irradiation pattern for all four systems that can be attributed to shielding of the secondary star by the accretion stream/column in AM Her, QQ Vul and HU Aqr, and increased irradiation by the bright-spot in IP Peg. We use the entropy landscape technique to derive accurate system parameters (M[sub 1], M[sub 2], i and γ) for the four binaries. In principle, this technique should provide the most reliable mass determinations available, since the intensity distribution across the secondary star is known. We also find that the intensity distribution can systematically affect the value of γ derived from circular orbit fits to radial velocity variations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a new mapping algorithm, the Accretion Stream Mapping (ASM), which uses the full phase-coverage of a light curve to derive spatially resolved intensity distributions along the accretion stream in magnetic cataclysmic variables of AM Herculis type (polars). The surface of the accretion stream is approximated as a 12-sided (duodecadon-shaped) tube. After successfully testing this method on artificial data we applied it to emission-line light curves of Hβ, Hγ and He iiλ4686 of the bright eclipsing polar HU Aqr. We find hydrogen and helium line emission bright in the threading region of the stream where the stream couples on to magnetic field lines. It is particularly interesting that the stream is bright on the irradiated side facing the white dwarf, which highlights the interplay of collisional and radiative excitation/ionization. We present multi-epoch high-resolution spectroscopy and photoelectric polarimetry of the long-period polar (AM Herculis star) QQ Vul. The blue emission lines show several distinct components, the sharpest of which can unequivocally be assigned to the illuminated hemisphere of the secondary star and used to trace its orbital motion. This narrow emission line can be used in combination with Na i absorption lines from the photosphere of the companion to build a stable long-term ephemeris for the star: inferior conjunction of the companion occurs at HJD=244 8446.4710(5)+E×0[sup d][sub .];154 520 11(11). The polarization curves are dissimilar at different epochs, thus supporting the idea of fundamental changes of the accretion geometry, e.g., between one- and two-pole accretion modes. The linear polarization pulses display a random scatter by 0.2 phase units and are not suitable for the determination of the binary period. The polarization data suggest that the magnetic (dipolar) axis has a colatitude of 23°, an azimuth of -50°, and an orbital inclination between 50° and 70°. Doppler images of blue emission and red absorption lines show a clear separation between the illuminated and non-illuminated hemispheres of the secondary star. The absorption lines on their own can be used to determine the mass ratio of the binary by Doppler tomography with an accuracy of 15–20 per cent. The narrow emission lines of different atomic species show remarkably different radial velocity amplitudes: K=85–130 km s[sup -1]. Emission lines from the most highly ionized species, He ii, originate closest to the inner Lagrangian point L[sub 1]. We can discern two kinematic components within the accretion stream; one is associated with the ballistic part, and the other with the magnetically threaded part of the stream. The location of the emission component associated with the ballistic accretion stream appears displaced between different epochs. Whether this displacement indicates a dislocation of the ballistic stream, e.g. by a magnetic drag, or emission from the magnetically threaded part of the stream with near-ballistic velocities, remains unsolved. We present high- and medium-resolution phase-resolved far-red spectra of the magnetic cataclysmic variable QQ Vul. The spectra show the Na i doublet absorption features near λ 8190 Å from the cool secondary star, and the lines of He ii, O i, Mg ii, C i, N i, Ca ii and Paschen in emission. Using a Doppler imaging technique, we find that the H i, He ii, C i and O i lines have a narrow component originating near the L[sub 1] point and a strong component from the stream, while the Mg ii and Ca ii emission arises solely from the illuminated hemisphere of the red dwarf. We carry out an exhaustive analysis of the emission- and absorption-line velocities and fluxes seen in the QQ Vul spectrum. By simultaneously fitting the radial velocity and flux information we are able to produce surface maps of each line on the secondary star using a technique analogous to the one employed by Davey. The Na i and Mg ii maps show an asymmetric distribution akin to that seen in AM Her. Although the observed velocity semi-amplitudes (K[sub 2]) of the lines can potentially be corrected for the effects of irradiation, we find that time-dependent changes in the degree of heating on the secondary can lead to large discrepancies in the results, significant enough to give inconsistent values from data taken at different epochs. We discuss the limitations of the surface mapping method as a means of correcting the observed K[sub 2]. Our results also suggest that the emission features from the red dwarf are likely to be formed at quite high levels of the stellar chromosphere, in some cases probably even beyond the L[sub 1] point and inside the Roche lobe of the white dwarf, with the different lines possibly forming at different depths. Using the Na i absorption doublet, we find a velocity semi-amplitude for the secondary star of K[sub 2]=219±6 km s[sup -1] and a projected rotational velocity of v[sub rot] sin i=110±15 km s[sup -1]. Thus we estimate the mass ratio to be q=0.54±0.14. Based on the results of the best-fitting surface maps on all the lines, and the nature of the phase-dependent variations of the continuum and lines, we infer a binary inclination of i=65°±7°, and obtain a complete set of binary parameters for QQ Vul. We classify the secondary star as M4V from the TiO band ratios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Tomographic techniques of different flavour offer enormous diagnostic power for the analysis of magnetic cataclysmic binaries, particularly those of AM Herculis type, the so-called polars. The three main ingredients of such systems, the donor star, the accretor and the accretion stream between the two stars, are investigated by Doppler tomography, Roche tomography and eclipse mapping methods. The indirect imaging methods reveal the structure, extent and ionization conditions in the accretion stream, they reveal the extent of the irradiation zone on the secondary star and constrain the mass ratio and the orbital inclination of the binary. We describe a new code for Roche tomography, the achievements and limitations of straight Doppler tomography and a new mapping technique tentatively called curtain tomography. This new technique will map emission line profiles to an accretion curtain making full use of the velocity and the photometric information. (© 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final down-selection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supra-nuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m 2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 deg collimated field of view) and a WideField Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. In this paper we present the status of the mission at the end of its Phase A study., Proc. SPIE 9144, Space Telescopes and Instrumentation 2014: Ultraviolet to Gamma Ray, 91442T
