Simple Summary: In this study, we investigated whether Kea parrots (Nestor notabilis) can learn to solve a task to reach a food reward by watching another Kea solve the task first, a process known as social learning. The task that the Kea needed to solve was a box with two strings attached, where pulling the correct string caused a reward to be released into a food tray. Pulling the incorrect string had no effect. Kea subjects were separated into groups: test and control. 'Test subjects' observed an experienced, trained demonstrator first solve the box, after which they were given access to the box to try and solve for themselves. 'Control subjects' did not view a demonstration and were given access to the box with no previous experience. We could show that test subjects spent significantly more time manipulating the correct string compared to control subjects. This suggests that viewing a demonstration brought the test subjects' attention to the relevant parts of the box. There was also a trend towards test subjects having more success in solving the box compared to control subjects. Social learning describes the acquisition of knowledge through observation of other individuals, and it is fundamental for the development of culture and traditions within human groups. Although previous studies suggest that Kea (Nestor notabilis) benefit from social learning, experimental evidence has been inconclusive, as in a recent two-action task, all perceptual factors were ignored. The present study attempts to address this by investigating social learning in Kea with a focus on social enhancement processes. In an experiment with a captive group of Kea, we investigated whether individuals that had the opportunity to observe a conspecific performing a simple task subsequently show better performance in that task than a control group without prior demonstration. This study provides a strong tendency of greater success in skill acquisition in Kea as a result of social learning. Kea that observed a conspecific solving a task showed clear evidence of perceptual factors drawing attention to the relevant parts of the experimental apparatus and manipulated these significantly more (100% of trials) than control birds (77.8% of trials). Combined with a strong trend (p = 0.056) of the test subjects solving the task more than the control subjects, this shows conclusively that Kea, at least when required to solve a task, do attend to perceptual factors of a demonstrated action. This study investigates vocal development of nestling kea parrots (Nestor notabilis). First, we examine how many structurally distinct call types were present during the nestling period, and the age in which call types occurred. Based on studies with other avian species, we predicted that kea nestlings would have multiple call types, with some present at hatching and others emerging later in the nestling period. Results showed that nestlings have four distinct call types, two present at hatching, and two emerging when the nestlings undergo large physical changes in the second week of life. While two of the call types developed gradually towards more adult-like structures, the other two did not and were apparently only used for communication in the nest. Second, we tested whether nestlings could be discriminated individually based on their calls. All four call types were individually discriminable from hatching until the end of the study, thus providing evidence for vocal signatures. While the function of vocal signatures cannot be ascertained from this study, kea breeding biology rules out explanations based on preventing misdirected parental care. Vocal behaviour of nesting altricial birds is subject to selection pressure from several sources. Offspring beg to attract parents' attention, thus increasing the chances of being fed, but also increasing the chances of being detected by predators. Research on passerines has shown that parents may reduce the risk of nest predation by alarm calling to warn nestlings to be quiet, and by producing food calls which solicit begging when parents are present to defend the nestlings. Both nestlings and parents may reduce the risk of predator detection by producing calls of low amplitude and high entropy which are acoustically difficult to locate. Although extensive research has been undertaken on nesting passerine vocalizations, little is known about parrots in this regard, and studies are needed to determine whether parrots show similar adaptations. We investigated the calling behaviour of Kea Nestor notabilis mothers during the nesting period to determine whether maternal vocalizations were adapted in a way that could increase the chance of brood success. A microphone was installed inside the nest to record calls produced both inside the nest and in the direct vicinity. Our prediction was that calls outside the nest would be easy to locate and could function as alarm calls to alert conspecifics or distract the predator, whereas calls inside the nest would be difficult to locate and could serve to communicate with nestlings without alerting predators. Our results accorded with these predictions. Calls produced outside the nest were loud and tonal, and corresponded to previously described Kea alarm calls. Calls produced inside the nest, however, were high‐entropy and low‐amplitude calls, and formed a distinct structural category. We thus provide the first evidence that a parrot species has a vocal category for communication inside the nest, and that calls within this category are structured in a way that could reduce the risk of nest predation. Previous studies showed that kea are able to cooperate in experiments based on the loose‐string paradigm, but success rates were low, except when tested in stable dyads. We trained kea with low success rates to attend to the handling of the string by a human partner. This vastly improved subsequent coordination during cooperation with kea partners. Furthermore, we tested the kea dyads with a delayed entry set‐up (delays of 2, 4 or 6 s) and with two different lengths of string. Increasing length of delay and reducing string length had negative effects on the success rate. This suggests that a complete understanding of the actions was not present as the kea were not able to fully overcome factors that inhibit coordination. Lastly, we tested the three subjects showing the greatest ability to wait for the partner in a partner‐choice paradigm: one subject in the central position could pull a loose string with one partner after another in the order it preferred. As a result, the second subjects had much longer waiting times than previously experienced. We could show that the central kea learned to visit both set‐ups and that the second partner was able to wait for the partner to arrive before attempting to pull on the string, averaging twice as long as in the standard delay. Taken together, the results from this study highlight that cooperation in the loose‐string paradigm is largely dependent on coordination of the subjects. While attention to the partner's actions greatly improved performance, the greater waiting times achieved in the final set‐up also suggest that utilizing more ecologically relevant (subject is busy VS subject is held back) delays could further improve the performance of non‐human subjects in the delayed loose‐string paradigm. Allogrooming in primates serves not only a hygienic function, but also plays a crucial role in maintaining strong affiliative bonds between group members, which in turn, underpin the emergence of cooperative behavior. In contrast, although allopreening occurs in many avian species, we know little about its social functions. Our study addresses this issue by investigating allopreening in a broad comparative data set including six corvid and nine parrot species. We assessed whether rates of allopreening initiations, proportion of time spent allopreening, and the number of grooming partners in captive group‐housed birds were comparable to patterns observed in captive chimpanzees and bonobos. While parrots and corvids were found to have similar rates of social grooming to bonobos and chimpanzees, Pan species dedicated significantly more time to social grooming. Animals in larger groups had more grooming partners, but when controlling for the number of potential partners, birds tended to have fewer grooming interaction partners than Pan species. We then investigated whether allopreening in parrots and corvids was predicted by behavioral markers of affiliative social bonds (close physical proximity, active feeding, and low levels of agonistic behavior). Results revealed that providing allopreening to a partner was significantly predicted by often being in close proximity, but not engagement in active feeding or agonistic behavior. We examined the region allopreened in a subset of species and found that preening a partner's head was predicted by both close physical proximity and active feeding, while body allopreening was only predicted by close physical proximity. Head preening may confer more hygienic benefits to recipients, and thus, may be more selectively provided to valued partners. Results support the hypothesis that allopreening in corvids and parrots helps maintain social bonds with an individual's most important social partners, showing some similarities to allogrooming in primates. Reasoning by exclusion, i.e. the ability to understand that if there are only two possibilities and if it is not A, it must be B, has been a topic of great interest in recent comparative cognition research. Many studies have investigated this ability, employing different methods, but rarely exploring concurrent decision processes underlying choice behaviour of non-human animals encountering inconsistent or incomplete information. Here, we employed a novel training and test method in order to perform an in-depth analysis of the underlying processes. Importantly, to discourage the explorative behaviour of the kea, a highly neophilic species, the training included a large amount of novel, unrewarded stimuli. The subsequent test consisted of 30 sessions with different sequences of four test trials. In these test trials, we confronted the kea with novel stimuli that were paired with either the rewarded or unrewarded training stimuli or with the novel stimuli of previous test trials. Once habituated to novelty, eight out of fourteen kea tested responded to novel stimuli by inferring their contingency via logical exclusion of the alternative. One individual inferred predominantly in this way, while other response strategies, such as one trial learning, stimulus preferences and avoiding the negative stimulus also guided the responses of the remaining individuals. Interestingly, the difficulty of the task had no influence on the test performance. We discuss the implications of these findings for the current hypotheses about the emergence of inferential reasoning in some avian species, considering causal links to brain size, feeding ecology and social complexity. Categorizing individuals on the basis of familiarity is an adaptive way of dealing with the complexity of the social environment. It requires the use of conceptual familiarity and is considered higher order learning. Although, it is common among many species, ecological need might require and facilitate individual differentiation among heterospecifics. This may be true for laboratory populations just as much as for domesticated species and those that live in urban contexts. However, with the exception of a few studies, populations of laboratory animals have generally been given less attention. The study at hand, therefore, addressed the question whether a laboratory population of kea parrots ( Nestor notabilis ) were able to apply the concept of familiarity to differentiate between human faces in a two-choice discrimination task on the touchscreen. The results illustrated that the laboratory population of kea were indeed able to differentiate between familiar and unfamiliar human faces in a two-choice discrimination task. A range of non-human animals frequently manipulate and explore objects in their environment, which may enable them to learn about physical properties and potentially form more abstract concepts of properties such as weight and rigidity. Whether animals can apply the information learned during their exploration to solve novel problems, however, and whether they actually change their exploratory behaviour to seek functional information about objects have not been fully explored. We allowed kea ( Nestor notabilis ) and New Caledonian crows ( Corvus moneduloides ) to explore sets of novel objects both before and after encountering a task in which some of the objects could function as tools. Following this, subjects were given test trials in which they could choose among the objects they had explored to solve a tool-use task. Several individuals from both species performed above chance on these test trials, and only did so after exploring the objects, compared with a control experiment with no prior exploration phase. These results suggest that selection of functional tools may be guided by information acquired during exploration. Neither kea nor crows changed the duration or quality of their exploration after learning that the objects had a functional relevance, suggesting that birds do not adjust their behaviour to explicitly seek this information., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interests.
