In this work we compare numerically exact Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations and Green function theory (GFT) calculations of thin ferromagnetic films including second order anisotropies. Thereby we concentrate on easy plane systems, i.e. systems for which the anisotropy favors a magnetization parallel to the film plane. We discuss these systems in perpendicular external field, i.e. B parallel to the film normal. GFT results are in good agreement with QMC for high enough fields and temperatures. Below a critical field or a critical temperature no collinear stable magnetization exists in GFT. On the other hand QMC gives finite magnetization even below those critical values. This indicates that there occurs a transition from non-collinear to collinear configurations with increasing field or temperature. For slightly tilted external fields a rotation of magnetization from out-of-plane to in-plane orientation is found with decreasing temperature., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PRB

Quantum mechanical calculations based on an extended Heisenberg model are compared with ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experiments on prototype trilayer systems Ni_7/Cu_n/Co_2/Cu(001) in order to determine and separate for the first time quantitatively the sources of the temperature dependence of interlayer exchange coupling. Magnon excitations are responsible for about 75% of the reduction of the coupling strength from zero to room temperature. The remaining 25% are due to temperature effects in the effective quantum well and the spacer/magnet interfaces., Comment: accepted for publication in PRL

Temperature dependent FMR-measurements of Ni and Co films are analysed using a microscopic theory for ultrathin metallic systems. The mechanism governing the temperature dependence of the magnetic anisotropy energy is identified and discussed. It is reduced with increasing temperature. We present a new type of temperature driven spin reorientation transition (SRT) in thin films. It can occur when the lattice and the shape anisotropy favor different easy directions of the magnetization. Due to different temperature dependencies of the two contributions the effective anisotropy may change its sign and thus the direction of the magnetization as a function of temperature may change. Contrary to the well-known reorientation transition caused by competing surface and bulk anisotropy contributions the reorientation that we discuss is also found in film systems with a uniform lattice anisotropy. The results of our theoretical model study may have experimental relevance for film systems with positive lattice anisotropy, as e.g. thin iron films grown on copper., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in EPJB

There are different mechanisms proposed to be responsible for the temperature dependence of the interlayer exchange coupling (IEC), namely a smearing out of the spacer or interface Fermi surface and excitations and interactions of spin waves. We propose a possibility to separate both effects by calculating the excitation spectrum of an extended Heisenberg model and connecting the results with ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experiments. To solve the Heisenberg model we use an approximation that was shown to yield excellent results. We consider the spin reorientation transition in a ferromagnetic Heisenberg monolayer with a second order single ion anisotropy as a function of temperature and external field. Up to now analytical methods give satisfying results only for the special case that the external field is aligned parallel to the easy axis of the crystal. We propose a theory based on a generalization of the Callen decoupling, which can be used for arbritrary direction of the external field. Excellent agreement between our results and Quantum Monte Carlo data is found for the field induced reorientation at finite temperatures. We study the influence of collective magnetic excitations on the interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) in metallic multilayers. The results are compared to other models that explain the temperature dependence of the IEC by mechanisms within the spacer or at the interfaces of the multilayers. As a main result we find that the reduction of the IEC with temperature shows practically the same functional dendence in all models. On the other hand the influence of the spacer thickness, the magnetic material, and an external field are quite different. Based on these considerations we propose experiments, that are able to determine the dominating mechanism that reduces the IEC at finite temperatures., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for PRB

Recent photoemission experiments have shown strong surface modifications in the spectra from vanadium oxides as (V,Cr)_2O_3 or (Sr,Ca)VO_3. The effective mass is enhanced at the surface and the coherent part of the surface spectrum is narrowed as compared to the bulk. The quasiparticle weight is more sensitive at the surface than in the bulk against bandwidth variations. We investigate these effects theoretically considering the single-band Hubbard model for a film geometry. A simplified dynamical mean-field scheme is used to calculate the main features of the interacting layer-dependent spectral function. It turns out that the experimentally confirmed effects are inherent properties of a system of strongly correlated electrons. The reduction of the weight and the variance of the coherent part of the surface spectrum can be traced back to the reduced surface coordination number. We derive a generalization of the RKKY interaction to semiconductors using perturbation theory on a non-degenerated two-impurity Anderson model. In metals the interaction is mediated by excitations of free carriers over the Fermi-energy. In semiconductors, where no carriers are present, the only possible excitations are those of the localized impurity electrons (or holes) themselves. Thus a possible interaction is closely related to superexchange. We find an oscillating anti-ferromagnetic spin-spin coupling due to impurity electron (hole) excitations. By treating the coupling through empty bands (superexchange) along the same route as carrier mediated interactions (RKKY) it is easy to compare these two kinds of spin-spin coupling. We investigate the influence of s-d or p-d hybridization to d-band ferromagnetism to estimate the importance of hybridization for the magnetic properties of transition metals. To focus our attention to the interplay between hybridization and correlation we investigate a simple model system consisting of two non-degenerated hybridized bands, one strongly correlated, the other one quasi-free. To solve this extended Hubbard model, we apply simple approximations, namely SDA and MAA, that, concerning ferromagnetism in the single-band model, are known to give qualitatively satisfactory results. This approach allows us to discuss the underlying mechanism, by which d-band ferromagnetism is influenced by the hybridization on the basis of analytical expressions. The latter clearly display the order and the functional dependencies of the important effects. It is found, that spin-dependent inter-band particle fluctuations cause a spin-dependent band shift and a spin-dependent band broadening of the Hubbard bands. The shift stabilizes, the broadening tends to destabilize ferromagnetism. Stabilization requires relatively high band distances and small hybridization matrix elements. We introduce a new aproximation scheme for the periodic Anderson model (PAM). The modified alloy approximation represents an optimum alloy approximation for the strong coupling limit, which can be solved within the CPA-formalism. Zero-temperature and finite-temperature phase diagrams are presented for the PAM in the intermediate-valence regime. The diversity of magnetic properties accessible by variation of the system parameters can be studied by means of quasiparticle densities of states: The conduction band couples either ferro- or antiferromagneticaly to the f-levels. A finite hybridization is a necessary precondition for ferromagnetism. However, too strong hybridization generally suppresses ferromagnetism, but can for certain system parameters also lead to a semi-metallic state with unusual magnetic properties. By comparing with the spectral density approximation, the influence of quasiparticle damping can be examined., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures
