4. The role of human capital, social capital, and psychological capital in micro-entrepreneurship in China

Abstract

A key question in entrepreneurship research is how certain individuals in different contexts are able to generate superior venture performance. Micro-entrepreneurs in emerging and transition economies lack access to various forms of capital to launch and grow new ventures, as they operate in settings characterised by resource scarcity and underdeveloped market institutions. To meet the need for tangible financial resources, lenders provide small loans to stimulate business development. Yet financial capital alone does not ensure successful business outcomes, raising questions as to how micro-entrepreneurs deploy intangible resources to drive growth. Based on in-person survey interviews conducted with 164 entrepreneurs receiving loans at community banks in Zhejiang Province, China, as well as qualitative field data, this study examines the impact of human capital, social capital, and psychological capital on the growth of micro-enterprises in China, with a focus on the moderating role of psychological capital. By integrating psychological capital with human capital and social network approaches, this study fills a research gap at the intersections of these three perspectives. The contributions of this study include establishing boundary conditions for these theories to explain how entrepreneurs overcome resource scarcity to grow ventures within a relational society undergoing a transition to a market economy.

Abstract

This research explores individual-level factors that influence social entrepreneurs' perceptions of the institutional environment and examines why some individuals pursue, and persevere in, the social entrepreneurship field. Based on qualitative interviews with social entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia, we find that human capital—represented by education and professional experience—influences the perception of regulative institutions, but can create a mismatch between expectations and reality. The four psychological capital components affect social entrepreneurs' perceptions of regulative institutions at different stages of the venture. Self-efficacy and optimism are useful at the beginning of the social entrepreneur's journey, whereas hope and resilience are more important for the viability of social enterprise at later stages. For policymakers, adolescence presents an invaluable opportunity to ensure that all young people can access the high-quality services and supports they need to improve their odds of becoming successful, healthy, productive adults. At an historic moment when the provisions and breadth of health care reform are under vigorous debate, it is important to take stock of how well the states are currently meeting the health and development needs of all adolescents, and particularly disadvantaged youth. This report presents information from NCCP's (National Center for Children in Poverty) Improving the Odds for Adolescents project about state policy choices that affect the health and well-being of adolescents. Abstract

Adolescence is an important period of physical, social, psychological, and cognitive growth. No longer children and not yet adults, adolescents make significant choices about their health and develop attitudes and health behaviors that continue into adulthood. Substance use disorders among adolescents can impede the attainment of important developmental milestones, including the development of autonomy, the formation of intimate interpersonal relationships, and general integration into adult society. Similarly, the use of alcohol and illicit substances by youth often leads to adverse health outcomes. This paper presents: (1) facts about adolescent substance use; (2) factors that make monitoring and decreasing adolescent substance use especially difficult; and (3) recommendations for preventing adolescent substance use. Abstract

This study examines the impact of human capital, social capital, and psychological capital on the revenue growth of small and medium-sized enterprises, based on 164 survey interviews with entrepreneurs in eastern China. While previous research indicates generally positive impacts on growth from entrepreneurs human capital and social capital, the study addresses contingencies and negative effects, demonstrating advantages and disadvantages to networks and moderating effects of psychological capital, including enhancing, buffering and resource substitution mechanisms. This research aims to establish boundary conditions for these theories to explain how entrepreneurs apply intangible resources to grow ventures in the Chinese context.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to ascertain the likelihood of isolated maternal fever and suspected intrauterine inflammation or infection or both (Triple I) among cases of histologic chorioamnionitis with funisitis (HCF) at term. STUDY DESIGN: In this case-control study, placental pathology records were reviewed to identify term singleton laboring patients with HCF. Controls (1:1) were matched for gestational age. RESULTS: During the 6-month period, there were 2,399 term deliveries of laboring women. Of 1,552 (65%) term placentas examined, 4% (n = 60) had HCF.Features of Triple I were significantly more common among cases than controls: (1) isolated maternal fever of ≥100.4°F, twice, at least 30 minutes apart (p = 0.014); (2) fever with fetal tachycardia (p = 0.029); 3) fever with either fetal tachycardia or white blood cell count greater than 15,000 per mm³ (p = 0.034). The feature of Triple I with the highest sensitivity at 10% (95% confidence intervals [CI] 4-21%) was isolated maternal fever using ≥100.4°F on two occasions. The specificity for all features was consistently 100% (95% CI 91-100%). CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first report on HCF and Triple I features. Though the sensitivity of Triple I to identify HCF is low, specificity is excellent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
