Experimental data on the compressive strength $\sigma_{\rm max}$ versus strain rate ${\dot \varepsilon}_{\rm eng}$ for metallic glasses undergoing uniaxial compression shows significantly different behavior for different alloys. For some metallic glasses, $\sigma_{\rm max}$ decreases with increasing ${\dot \varepsilon}_{\rm eng}$, for others, $\sigma_{\rm max}$ increases with increasing ${\dot \varepsilon}_{\rm eng}$, and for others $\sigma_{\rm max}$ versus ${\dot \varepsilon}_{\rm eng}$ is nonmonotonic. Using numerical simulations of metallic glasses undergoing uniaxial compression at nonzero strain rate and temperature, we show that they obey a universal relation for the compressive strength versus temperature, which determines their mechanical response. At low ${\dot \varepsilon}_{\rm eng}$, increasing strain rate leads to increases in temperature and decreases in $\sigma^*_{\rm max}$, whereas at high ${\dot \varepsilon}_{\rm eng}$, increasing strain rate leads to decreases in temperature and increases in $\sigma^*_{\rm max}$. This non-monotonic behavior of $\sigma^*_{\rm max}$ versus temperature causes the nonmonotonic behavior of $\sigma^*_{\rm max}$ versus ${\dot \varepsilon}_{\rm eng}$. Variations in the internal dissipation change the characteristic strain rate at which the nonmonotonic behavior occurs. The self-limiting nature of atomic layer deposition (ALD) makes it an appealing option for growing single layers of two-dimensional van der Waals (2D-VDW) materials. In this paper it is demonstrated that a single layer of a 2D-VDW form of SiO2 can be grown by ALD on Au and Pd polycrystalline foils and epitaxial films. The silica was deposited by two cycles of bis (diethylamino) silane and oxygen plasma exposure at 525 K. Initial deposition produced a three-dimensionally disordered silica layer; however, subsequent annealing above 950 K drove a structural rearrangement resulting in 2D-VDW; this annealing could be performed at ambient pressure. Surface spectra recorded after annealing indicated that the two ALD cycles yielded close to the silica coverage obtained for 2D-VDW silica prepared by precision SiO deposition in ultra-high vacuum. Analysis of ALD-grown 2D-VDW silica on a Pd(111) film revealed the co-existence of amorphous and incommensurate crystalline 2D phases. In contrast, ALD growth on Au(111) films produced predominantly the amorphous phase while SiO deposition in UHV led to only the crystalline phase, suggesting that the choice of Si source can enable phase control., Comment: 15 pages 12 figures

In topological crystalline insulators the topological conducting surface states are protected by crystal symmetry, in principle making it possible to pattern nanoscale insulating and conductive motifs solely by breaking local symmetries on an otherwise homogenous, single-phase material. We show using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy that defects that break local symmetry of SnTe suppress electron tunneling over an energy range as large as the bulk band gap, an order of magnitude larger than that produced globally via magnetic fields or uniform structural perturbations. Complementary ab initio calculations show how local symmetry breaking obstructs topological surface states as shown by a threefold reduction of the spectral weight of the topological surface states. The finding highlights the potential benefits of manipulating the surface morphology to create devices that take advantage of the unique properties of topological surface states and can operate at practical temperatures.

We report an experimental realization of the quantum paradox of the separation of a single photon from one of its properties (the so-called "quantum Cheshire cat"). We use a modified Sagnac interferometer with displaced paths to produce appropriately pre- and postselected states of heralded single photons. Weak measurements of photon presence and circular polarization are performed in each arm of the interferometer by introducing weak absorbers and small polarization rotations and analyzing changes in the postselected signal. The absorber is found to have an appreciable effect only in one arm of the interferometer, while the polarization rotation significantly affects the signal only when performed in the other arm. We carry out both sequential and simultaneous weak measurements and find good agreement between measured and predicted weak values. We determine the surface reconstruction of SrTiO3 used to achieve superconducting FeSe films in experiments, which is different from the 1x1 TiO2 terminated SrTiO3 assumed by most previous theoretical studies. In particular, we identify the existence of a double TiO2 layer at the SrTiO3-FeSe interface that plays two important roles. First, it facilitates the epitaxial growth of FeSe. Second, ab initio calculations reveal a strong tendency for electrons to transfer from an oxygen deficient SrTiO3 surface to FeSe when the double TiO2 layer is present. As a better electron donor than previously proposed interfacial structures, the double layer helps to remove the hole pocket in the FeSe at the {\Gamma} point of the Brillouin zone and leads to a band structure characteristic of superconducting samples. In a delayed-choice quantum eraser, interference fringes are obtained by erasing which-way information after the interfering particle has already been irreversibly detected. Following an introductory review of delayed-choice experiments and quantum erasure, we describe the experimental realization of an optical delayed-choice quantum eraser, suitable for advanced undergraduates, based on polarization-entangled pairs of single photons. In our experiment, the delay of the erasure is implemented using two different setups. The first setup employs an arrangement of mirrors to increase the optical path length of the photons carrying which-way information. In the second setup, we use fiber-optic cables to elongate the path of these photons after their passage through the polarization analyzer but prior to their arrival at the detector. We compare our results to data obtained in the absence of a delay and find excellent agreement. This shows that the timing of the erasure is irrelevant, as also predicted by quantum mechanics. Program behavior may depend on parameters, which are either configured before compilation time, or provided at run-time, e.g., by sensors or other input devices. Parametric program analysis explores how different parameter settings may affect the program behavior. In order to infer invariants depending on parameters, we introduce parametric strategy iteration. This algorithm determines the precise least solution of systems of integer equations depending on surplus parameters. Conceptually, our algorithm performs ordinary strategy iteration on the given integer system for all possible parameter settings in parallel. This is made possible by means of region trees to represent the occurring piecewise affine functions. We indicate that each required operation on these trees is polynomial-time if only constantly many parameters are involved. Parametric strategy iteration for systems of integer equations allows to construct parametric integer interval analysis as well as parametric analysis of differences of integer variables. It thus provides a general technique to realize precise parametric program analysis if numerical properties of integer variables are of concern.

Surface electric noise, i.e., the non-uniform distribution of charges and potentials on a surface, poses a great experimental challenge in modern precision force measurements. Such a challenge is encountered in a number of different experimental circumstances. The scientists employing atomic force microscopy (AFM) have long focused their efforts to understand the surface-related noise issues via variants of AFM techniques, such as Kelvin probe force microscopy or electric force microscopy. Recently, the physicists investigating quantum vacuum fluctuation phenomena between two closely-spaced objects have also begun to collect experimental evidence indicating a presence of surface effects neglected in their previous analyses. It now appears that the two seemingly disparate science communities are encountering effects rooted in the same surface phenomena. In this report, we suggest specific experimental tasks to be performed in the near future that are crucial not only for fostering needed collaborations between the two communities, but also for providing valuable data on the surface effects in order to draw the most realistic conclusion about the actual contribution of the Casimir force (or van der Waals force) between a pair of real materials., Comment: The paper appeared in the Proceedings to the 12th International Conference on Noncontact Atomic Force Microscopy (NC-AFM 2009) and Casimir 2009 Satellite Workshop

This paper studied the usefulness of differential item functioning (DIF) methodology for examining potential mode effects. Although the goal was not to validate the comparability of the assessments per se, it is of interest to speculate why some formats could give rise to differential performance. Data were obtained from two instruments on which validation studies were conducted to determine if scores were comparable across modes of administration. The first instrument was a norm-referenced aptitude test called InView, administered to students in grades 4 to 9 in computer and paper modes for this study. Additional data were obtained from a Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), also norm-referenced. Test takers were asked about their levels of computer experience and preferences. Two DIF statistics, the Linn-Harnisch procedure (1981) and the nonparametric Standardized Mean Difference were used to assess DIF. Results show that some levels of InView had substantial numbers of items that were flagged for the online comparisons with the standardization study, while others had relatively few. The TABE had two flagged items, and differences between computer-based and standardization groups were throughout the ability range with more apparent differences in the lower portion of the distribution. In general, students were neutral to mode or preferred computer-administered tests. Findings show that DIF methodology presents a well-studied method for examining group differences at the item level that can be used to examine mode of administration differences at the item level. The interface and electronic structure of thin (~20-74 nm) Co3O4(110) epitaxial films grown by oxygen-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on MgAl2O4(110) single crystal substrates have been investigated by means of real and reciprocal space techniques. As-grown film surfaces are found to be relatively disordered and exhibit an oblique low energy electron diffraction (LEED) pattern associated with the O-rich CoO2 bulk termination of the (110) surface. Interface and bulk film structure are found to improve significantly with post-growth annealing at 820 K in air and display sharp rectangular LEED patterns, suggesting a surface stoichiometry of the alternative Co2O2 bulk termination of the (110) surface. Non-contact atomic force microscopy demonstrates the presence of wide terraces separated by atomic steps in the annealed films that are not present in the as-grown structures; the step height of ~ 2.7 A corresponds to two atomic layers and confirms a single termination for the annealed films, consistent with the LEED results. A model of the (1 * 1) surfaces that allows for compensation of the polar surfaces is presented., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Experiments performed by friction force microscopy at atomic-scale surface steps on graphite, MoS$_2$, and NaCl in ambient conditions are presented. Both step-down and step-up scans exhibit higher frictional forces at the edge, but distinguish in their load dependence: While the additional frictional force due to the step edge increases linearly with load if the tip has to jump a step up, it remains constant for downward jumps. This phenomena represents a universal effect that can be explained in terms of a modified Prandtl-Tomlinson model featuring a Schoebel-Ehrlich barrier at steps.

One of the most fundamental questions in tribology concerns the area dependence of friction at the nanoscale. Here, experiments are presented where the frictional resistance of nanoparticles is measured by pushing them with the tip of an atomic force microscope. We find two coexisting frictional states: While some particles show finite friction increasing linearly with the interface areas of up to 310,000nm^2, other particles assume a state of frictionless sliding. The results further suggest a link between the degree of surface contamination and the occurrence of this duality., Comment: revised version
