Although families can be critical partners in the pursuit of paid employment of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs), their insights and experiences in this area are rarely explored. We interviewed 60 parents and other caregivers about the factors that could facilitate integrated employment for their family members with IDD. Participants described dozens of distinct practices and postures that contributed to finding and maintaining paid work in the community. Their recommendations spanned eight major categories: employment mindsets, skill development, family supports, hands-on work experiences, employer connections, job fit, transportation, and workplace supports. We offer recommendations for research and practice aimed at increasing access to the array of benefits that come through meaningful work in one's community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) aspire to participate in a variety of activities after high school, such as attaining paid employment, enrolling in postsecondary education, being involved in their communities, living independently, and building friendships. However, complex and longstanding transition barriers require comprehensive solutions that are tailored to a local community's unique needs and available resources so that local youth with IDD may achieve their desired outcomes. This article presents "virtual community conversations" as a promising approach for bringing together local communities to tackle barriers to good outcomes for residents with IDD. Attendees were able to effectively generate innovative recommendations for addressing issues in their local communities. The present study aimed to: determine the extent to which the five factor model of personality (FFM) accounts for variability in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptomatology in adults, examine differences in average FFM personality traits of adults with and without ASD and identify distinct behavioral phenotypes within ASD. Adults (N = 828; nASD = 364) completed an online survey with an autism trait questionnaire and an FFM personality questionnaire. FFM facets accounted for 70% of variance in autism trait scores. Neuroticism positively correlated with autism symptom severity, while extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness negatively correlated with autism symptom severity. Four FFM subtypes emerged within adults with ASD, with three subtypes characterized by high neuroticism and none characterized by lower-than-average neuroticism.
