Abstract

Solar Orbiter is a joint ESA-NASA mission planed for launch in October 2018. The science payload includes remote-sensing and in-situ instrumentation designed with the primary goal of understanding how the Sun creates and controls the heliosphere. The spacecraft will follow an elliptical orbit around the Sun, with perihelion as close as 0.28 AU. During the late orbit phase the orbital plane will reach inclinations above 30 degrees, allowing direct observations of the solar polar regions. The Energetic Particle Detector (EPD) is an instrument suite consisting of several sensors measuring electrons, protons and ions over a broad energy interval (2 keV to 15 MeV for electrons, 3 keV to 100 MeV for protons and few tens of keV/nuc to 450 MeV/nuc for ions), providing composition, spectra, timing and anisotropy information. We present an overview of Solar Orbiter from the energetic particle perspective, summarizing the capabilities of EPD and the opportunities that these new observations will provide for understanding how energetic particles are accelerated during solar eruptions and how they propagate through the Heliosphere., Comment: XXV ECRS 2016 Proceedings - eConf C16-09-04.3

Abstract

We report the simultaneous production of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of $^{87}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs atoms in separate optical traps. The two samples are mixed during laser cooling and loading but are separated by $400 \mu$m for the final stage of evaporative cooling. This is done to avoid considerable interspecies three-body recombination, which causes heating and evaporative loss. We characterize the BEC production process, discuss limitations, and outline the use of the dual-species BEC in future experiments to produce rovibronic ground state molecules, including a scheme facilitated by the superfluid-to-Mott-insulator (SF-MI) phase transition.

We study the question of whether the Morava K-theory of the classifying space of an elementary abelian group V is a permutation module (in either of two distinct senses) for the automorphism group of V. We use Brauer characters and computer calculations. We construct and implement an algorithm for finding permutation submodules of maximal dimension inside modules for p-groups in characteristic p.

Abstract

We show that certain subrings of the cohomology of a finite p-group P may be realised as the images of restriction from suitable virtually free groups. We deduce that the cohomology of P is a finite module for any such subring. Examples include the ring of `universally stable elements' defined by Evens and Priddy, and rings of invariants such as the mod-2 Dickson algebras.

Abstract

Zeitungen sind ein Erfolgsmedium: Vom 17. bis zum 19. Jahrhundert haben sie sich zu dem entwickelt, was seither als Massenmedium gilt. Damit hat sich eine neue Kommunikationsbedingung auf eindrucksvolle Weise etabliert, die nicht mehr auf die gemeinsame Anwesenheit von Sender und Empfänger setzt, sondern auf deren Grundlage im Prinzip alle erreicht werden können, die lesen können. Neben Kopräsenz tritt damit Lesbarkeit als Kommunikationsbedingung immer stärker hervor. Dass und wie die Zeitungen das Potential dieser neuartigen Kommunikationsbedingung ausschöpfen und weiterentwickeln, ist das Thema des vorliegenden Beitrags. In ihm wird eine textlinguistische Fallstudie zweier Ausgaben der „Allgemeinen Zeitung“ aus den Jahren 1840 und 1900 vorgestellt, die zeigt, wie sich die Texte entwickeln, in denen sich die innovativen Lesbarkeitshinweise der Zeitung manifestieren. Exemplarisch herausgegriffen wird dazu die zeitungstypische Entwicklung von Begrenzbarkeit, Musterhaftigkeitund pragmatischer Nützlichkeit. Die Analysen belegen die bekannte Entwicklung hin zu immer autonomer rezipierbaren Lektüreportionen, die die Zeitung vor allem als Textsammlung profilieren. Wie die Stichproben zeigen, ist dieser Prozess in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts längst noch nicht abgeschlossen.

Abstract

Current CMOS single-photon detectors operating in Geiger mode use passive quenching, yielding slow recovery due to the RC delay. Active quenching of CMOS photon detectors operating in the Geiger mode requires external quenching circuitry that occupies a large area, reducing the fill factor and spatial resolution. Here, we demonstrate a self-quenched active recovery (SQUARE) single-photon detector having its recovery accelerated by a secondary carrier multiplication process. The device consists of two gain regions, one giving rise to the photon response and the other quenching the device and amplifying the residual current for a speedy self-recovery. The first gain region is a crystalline silicon p/n junction fabricated through a commercial CMOS process, and the second gain region is a carbon-doped amorphous silicon layer deposited on the top metal layer of a completed CMOS wafer. The SQUARE single-photon detector shows a Geiger-mode gain greater than 100 000 and achieved <30 ns self-recovery time, much faster than self-quenched and passively quenched single-photon avalanche photodiodes reported to date. Abstract

Background: The mental health impact of the COVID-19 crisis may differ from previously studied stressful events in terms of psychological reactions, specific risk factors, and symptom severity across geographic regions worldwide. Objective: To assess the impact of COVID-19 on a wide range of mental health symptoms, to identify relevant risk factors, to identify the effect of COVID-19 country impact on mental health, and to evaluate regional differences in psychological responses to COVID-19 compared to other stressful events. Method: 7034 respondents (74% female) participated in the worldwide Global Psychotrauma Screen – Cross-Cultural responses to COVID-19 study (GPS-CCC), reporting on mental health symptoms related to COVID-19 (n = 1838) or other stressful events (n = 5196) from April to November 2020. Results: Events related to COVID-19 were associated with more mental health symptoms compared to other stressful events, especially symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and dissociation. Lack of social support, psychiatric history, childhood trauma, additional stressful events in the past month, and low resilience predicted more mental health problems for COVID-19 and other stressful events. Higher COVID-19 country impact was associated with increased mental health impact of both COVID-19 and other stressful events. Analysis of differences across geographic regions revealed that in Latin America more mental health symptoms were reported for COVID-19 related events versus other stressful events, while the opposite pattern was seen in North America. Conclusions: The mental health impact of COVID-19-related stressors covers a wide range of symptoms and is more severe than that of other stressful events. This difference was especially apparent in Latin America. The findings underscore the need for global screening for a wide range of mental health problems as part of a public health approach, allowing for targeted prevention and intervention programs., HIGHLIGHTS In a large global sample, COVID-19 was associated with more severe mental health symptoms compared to other stressful or traumatic events. The impact of COVID-19 on mental health differed around the world with an especially large impact in Latin America.

Abstract

Background: During the current COVID-19 pandemic, the people in Europe are exposed to self-isolation, quarantine, job loss, risk of contracting COVID-19, or grief of loved ones. Such a complex array of stressors may lead to symptoms of adjustment disorder or posttraumatic stress disorder. This research protocol describes a study launched by the European Society of Traumatic Stress Studies (ESTSS) to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on symptoms of adjustment disorder across European countries.Objective: The longitudinal online cohort study aims (1) to explore psychosocial reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic across ten European countries; (2) to examine the relationships between risk and resilience factors, stressors and symptoms of adjustment disorder during the pandemic; and (3) to investigate whether these relationships are moderated by coping behaviours.Method: In ten countries (Austria, Croatia, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, and Sweden), between 1,000 and 2,000 participants will be recruited, depending on the size of the country. Participants will be assessed at two timepoints with a six-month interval. Following a conceptual framework based on the WHO’s social frame-work of health, an assessment of risk and resilience factors, COVID-19 related stressors and pandemic-specific coping behaviours will be measured to estimate their contribution to symptoms of adjustment disorder. The Adjustment Disorder New Module 8 (ADNM-8) will be used to assess symptoms of adjustment disorder. As a secondary measure, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder will be measure using the Primary Care PTSD Screen for DSM-5 (PC-PTSD-5). Data analysis: The relative contribution of risk factors, resilience factors, and stressors on symptoms of adjustment disorder or symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder will be esti-mated using multilevel analysis. To determine the moderating effects of different types of coping behaviours on these relationships, a multilevel mediation analysis will be carried out. Abstract

International audience; After decades of observations of solar energetic particles from space-based observatories, relevant questions on particle injection, transport, and acceleration remain open. To address these scientific topics, accurate measurements of the particle properties in the inner heliosphere are needed. In this paper we describe the Energetic Particle Detector (EPD), an instrument suite that is part of the scientific payload aboard the Solar Orbiter mission. Solar Orbiter will approach the Sun as close as 0.28 au and will provide extra-ecliptic measurements beyond ∼30° heliographic latitude during the later stages of the mission. The EPD will measure electrons, protons, and heavy ions with high temporal resolution over a wide energy range, from suprathermal energies up to several hundreds of megaelectronvolts/nucleons. For this purpose, EPD is composed of four units: the SupraThermal Electrons and Protons (STEP), the Electron Proton Telescope (EPT), the Suprathermal Ion Spectrograph (SIS), and the High-Energy Telescope (HET) plus the Instrument Control Unit that serves as power and data interface with the spacecraft. The low-energy population of electrons and ions will be covered by STEP and EPT, while the high-energy range will be measured by HET. Elemental and isotopic ion composition measurements will be performed by SIS and HET, allowing full particle identification from a few kiloelectronvolts up to several hundreds of megaelectronvolts/nucleons. Angular information will be provided by the separate look directions from different sensor heads, on the ecliptic plane along the Parker spiral magnetic field both forward and backwards, and out of the ecliptic plane observing both northern and southern hemispheres. The unparalleled observations of EPD will provide key insights into long-open and crucial questions about the processes that govern energetic particles in the inner heliosphere.

Abstract

This letter provides an update on the activities of “The Global Collaboration on Traumatic Stress” (GC-TS) as first described by Schnyder et al. in 2017. It presents in further detail the projects of the first theme, in particular the development of and initial data on the Global Psychotrauma Screen (GPS), a brief instrument designed to screen for the wide range of potential outcomes of trauma. English language data and ongoing studies in several languages provide a first indication that the GPS is a feasible, reliable and valid tool, a tool that may be very useful in the current pandemic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Further multi-language and cross-cultural validation is needed. Since the start of the GC-TS, new themes have been introduced to focus on in the coming years: a) Forcibly displaced persons, b) Global prevalence of stress and trauma related disorders, c) Socio-emotional development across cultures, and d) Collaborating to make traumatic stress research data “FAIR”. The most recent theme added is that of Global crises, currently focusing on COVID-19-related projects.
