Abstract

Melittomma brasiliensis (Laporte, 1832) In Mexico, M. brasiliensis is known from the states of Chiapas (Ocozocoautla), Colima (Minatitl��n), San Luis Potos��ı (Tamasopo), and Veracruz (C��rdoba, Estaci��n de Biolog��ıa Los Tuxtlas, Fortin de Las Flores, and Tuxtla) (Gorham 1881, 1886; Navarrete-Heredia 2004). Herein we record it for the first time from the Mexican states of Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Puebla, Quer��taro, and Tamaulipas. Additionally, new localities from Chiapas and Veracruz are provided (see Material Examined). In Guatemala, M. brasiliensis is known from the department of Quetzaltenango (El Reposo) (Gorham 1881, 1886). We present new distributional records from the departments of El Progreso, Escuintla, Huehuetenango, Izabal, Suchitep��quez, and Zacapa (Fig. 1) (see Material Examined). Melittomma brasiliensis is also widely distributed throughout the Americas (Fonseca and Vieira 2000; Gorham 1881, 1886; Orozco and D��ıaz 2018; Wheeler 1986). This species is rarely collected, and no data about their hosts or fungal symbiosis were found. Here we report for first time a phoretic relationship with mites. Material Examined. 22. Thermodynamic Assessment of the Ru–Si System

Abstract

A consistent thermodynamic data set for the Ru–Si system is obtained by a computer-aided least-squares method applied to the experimental phase diagram and thermodynamic data. The liquid phase is described by the Redlich-Kister formula. All of the compounds, Ru2Si, Ru4Si3, RuSi, and Ru2Si3, are treated as stoichiometric phases. Comparisons between the calculated and measured phase diagram and thermodynamic quantities show that all of the accurate experimental information is well accounted for by the thermodynamic description.

23. Assessment of Diffusional Mobilities of Cr, Ni, and Si in fcc Cr–Ni–Si Alloys

Abstract

The diffusional mobilities of Cr, Ni, and Si in fcc Cr–Ni–Si alloys have been assessed as a function of temperature and composition by means of a CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) type of procedure. Optimized kinetic parameters are presented. Comparisons between the calculated and measured diffusion coefficients show that most of the experimental information is satisfactorily accounted for by the present modeling. The obtained parameters can predict reasonably concentration profiles in binary Ni–Si and ternary Cr–Ni–Si diffusion couples.

24. Experimental Investigation and Thermodynamic Modeling of the Ni–Ti–C System

Abstract

The Ni–Ti–C ternary phase diagram is constructed via two steps. In the first step, all of the experimental phase diagram data available from the literature were critically reviewed and assessed by using thermodynamic models for the Gibbs energies of individual phases. In the second step, samples were prepared by arc melting of cold-pressed pellets and annealing at 900 °C for 288 h. Water-quenched samples were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) techniques. A consistent thermodynamic data set for the Ni–Ti–C system is finally obtained by considering the experimental results from the present work and reliable literature data. Comparisons between the calculated and measured phase diagrams show that most of the experimental information is satisfactorily accounted for by the thermodynamic modeling.

The crystal structure of the new ternary phase CuSnTi is determined by full profile Rietveld analysis of the powder diffractogram. 104 reflections were refined to a final RBragg value of 5.60%. CuSnTi crystallizes with the spacegroup P63/mmc and is isostructural to InNi2. The lattice parameters are a=0.439 555(5) nm and c=0.601 505(9) nm

Abstract

The synthesis and a joint experimental and theoretical study of the crystal structure and physical properties of the new ternary intermetallic compound TiGePt are presented. Upon heating, TiGePt exhibits an unusual structural phase transition with a huge volume contraction of about 10 %. The transformation is characterized by a strong change in the physical properties, in particular, by an insulator–metal transition. At temperatures below 885 °C TiGePt crystallizes in the cubic MgAgAs (half-Heusler) type (LT phase, space group Fequation image3m, a=5.9349(2) Å). At elevated temperatures, the crystal structure of TiGePt transforms into the TiNiSi structure type (HT phase, space group Pnma, a=6.38134(9) Å, b=3.89081(5) Å, c=7.5034(1) Å). The reversible, temperature-dependent structural transition was investigated by in-situ neutron powder diffraction and dilatometry measurements. The insulator–metal transition, indicated by resistivity measurements, is in accord with band structure calculations yielding a gap of about 0.9 eV for the LT phase and a metallic HT phase. Detailed analysis of the chemical bonding in both modifications revealed an essential change of the Ti–Pt and Ti–Ge interactions as the origin of the dramatic changes in the physical properties.

36. High-temperature oxidation/corrosion of iron-based superalloys

Abstract

The oxidation and sulfidation of several novel iron-base superalloys were evaluated in high-temperature cyclic tests. The experimental austenitic alloys examined were modifications of NASAUT-4GA which were developed for Stirling-engine application. The weight gains and resulting surface scales were measured and analyzed. Mixed oxide scales were found to form on all specimens exposed above 871 C. The build-up of these scales led to a depletion of Mn and Cr in a zone adjacent to the oxides. In addition, the initial oxidation of the Fe-rich alloy was inhibited by a thin but tenacious Si layer which formed at the interface between oxides and the parent layer. Sulfidation tests using Na2SO4 coatings resulted in the formation of a protective spinel and alpha-Fe2O3 phases. Preferential attack of the carbide phase by hydrogen was not observed after 350 h at 871 C.

37. Eutectic equilibria in the quaternary system Fe-Cr-Mn-C

Abstract

The constitution of the quaternary system, Fe-Cr-Mn-C and to a lesser extent of the quinary system, Fe-Cr-Mn-Al-C were examined for in situ composite alloy candidates. Multivariant eutectic compositions were determined from phase equilibria studies wherein M7C3 carbides (approximately 30% by volume) formed from the melt within gamma iron. An extended field of the hexagonal carbide, (Cr, Fe, Mn)7 C3, was found without undergoing transformation to the orthorhombic structure. Increasing stability for this carbide was found for higher ratios of Cr/Fe(+) Cr + Mn. Aluminum additions promoted a ferritic matrix while manganese favored the desired gamma austenitic matrix. In coexistence with the matrix phase, chromium enters preferentially the carbide phase while manganese distributes equally between the gamma matrix and the M7C3 carbide. The composition and lattice parameters of the carbide and matrix phases were determined to establish their respective stabilities.
