Abstract

This is an open access book. Time is an exceptional dimension with high relevance in medicine, engineering, business, science, biography, history, planning, or project management. Understanding time-oriented data via visual representations enables us to learn from the past in order to predict, plan, and build the future. This second edition builds upon the great success of the first edition. It maintains a brief introduction to visualization and a review of historical time-oriented visual representations. At its core, the book develops a systematic view of the visualization of time-oriented data. Separate chapters discuss interaction techniques and computational methods for supporting the visual data analysis. Many examples and figures illustrate the introduced concepts and techniques. So, what is new for the second edition? First of all, the second edition is now published as an open-access book so that anyone interested in the visualization of time and time-oriented data can read it. Second, the entire content has been revised and expanded to represent state-of-the-art knowledge. The chapter on interaction support now includes advanced methods for interacting with visual representations of time-oriented data. The second edition also covers the topics of data quality as well as segmentation and labeling. The comprehensive survey of classic and contemporary visualization techniques now provides more than 150 self-contained descriptions accompanied by illustrations and corresponding references. A completely new chapter describes how the structured survey can be used for the guided selection of suitable visualization techniques. For the second edition, our TimeViz Browser, the digital pendant to the survey of visualization techniques, received a major upgrade. It includes the same set of techniques as the book, but comes with additional filter and search facilities allowing scientists and practitioners to find exactly the solutions they are interested in. ; Time is an exceptional data dimension due to its importance and unique influence. This implies that special methods are needed for dealing with time in data sets in order to take advantage of these specifics. Visual methods are a key part of this tool set allowing for presentation, analysis, and exploration of temporal data sets. Visualisation of Time-Oriented Data provides an overview of the field of visualisation techniques for time-oriented data, but even more importantly analyses the specifics and similarities of the investigated techniques in order to identify clusters for structuring and making the field manageable. It also analyses the techniqes uniformly along different sets of attributes making it easy to grasp their main characteristics and support researchers as well as developers in selecting appropriate techniques for their demands. The theoretic foundations of visualization itself are also discussed, the data dimension time, tasks related to time-oriented data, possible mappings of time, various examples of early (pre-computer age) representation techniques, and a conceptual framework for visually analyzing time-oriented data.

Abstract

The visual analysis of retinal data contributes to the understanding of a wide range of eye diseases. For the evaluation of cross-sectional studies, ophthalmologists rely on workflows and toolsets established in their work environment. That is, they know what tools and data are needed at each step of their workflow. Yet, manually operating the various tools, including activation, data handling, or view arrangement, can be cumbersome and time-consuming. We thus introduce a new visualization-supported toolchaining approach that combines workflow, tools, and data. First, we provide access to the tools required for each step of the workflow. Second, we handle the exchange of data between these tools. Third, we organize the views of the tools on screen using suitable layouts. Fourth, we visualize the connection between workflow, tools, and data to support the data analysis. 3. Visual Analytics for Early Detection of Retinal Diseases

Abstract

Advances in optical coherence tomography (OCT) have enabled noninvasive imaging of substructures of the human retina with high spatial resolution. OCT examinations are now a standard procedure in clinics and an integral part of ophthalmic research. The interpretation of the OCT helps ophthalmologists understand the impact of various retinal and systemic diseases on the structure of the retina in a way not previously possible. In the early stages of retinal diseases, however, the identification and analysis of small and localized substructural changes in the retina remains a challenge. We present an overview of novel visual analytics approaches for the interactive exploration of early retinal changes in single and multiple patients, the comparison of the changes with normative data, and automated quantification and measurement of diagnosis-relevant information. We developed these approaches in close collaboration with ophthalmology researchers and industry experts from a leading OCT device manufacturer. As a result, they not only significantly reduced the time and effort required for OCT data analysis, especially in the context of cross-sectional studies, but have also led to several new discoveries published in biomedical journals., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

12. Responsive Matrix Cells: A Focus+Context Approach for Exploring and Editing Multivariate Graphs

Abstract

Matrix visualizations are a useful tool to provide a general overview of a graph's structure. For multivariate graphs, a remaining challenge is to cope with the attributes that are associated with nodes and edges. Addressing this challenge, we propose responsive matrix cells as a focus+context approach for embedding additional interactive views into a matrix. Responsive matrix cells are local zoomable regions of interest that provide auxiliary data exploration and editing facilities for multivariate graphs. They behave responsively by adapting their visual contents to the cell location, the available display space, and the user task. Responsive matrix cells enable users to reveal details about the graph, compare node and edge attributes, and edit data values directly in a matrix without resorting to external views or tools. We report the general design considerations for responsive matrix cells covering the visual and interactive means necessary to support a seamless data exploration and editing. Responsive matrix cells have been implemented in a web-based prototype based on which we demonstrate the utility of our approach. Abstract

Annotations in Visual Analytics (VA) have become a common means to support the analysis by integrating additional information into the VA system. That additional information often depends on the current process step in the visual analysis. For example, the data preprocessing step has data structuring operations while the data exploration step focuses on user interaction and input. Describing suitable annotations to meet the goals of the different steps is challenging. To tackle this issue, we identify individual annotations for each step and outline their gathering and design properties for the visual analysis of heterogeneous clinical data. We integrate our annotation design into a visual analysis tool to show its applicability to data from the ophthalmic domain. 14. Multi-display Visual Analysis: Model, Interface, and Layout Computation

Abstract

Modern display environments offer great potential for involving multiple users in presentations, discussions, and data analysis sessions. By showing multiple views on multiple displays, information exchange can be improved, several perspectives on the data can be combined, and different analysis strategies can be pursued. In this report, we describe concepts to support display composition, information distribution, and analysis coordination for visual data analysis in multi-display environments. In particular, a basic model for layout modeling is introduced, a graphical interface for interactive generation of the model is presented, and a layout mechanism is described that arranges multiple views on multiple displays automatically. Furthermore, approaches to meta-analysis will be discussed. The developed approaches are demonstrated in a use case that focuses on parameter space analysis for the segmentation of time series data.

18. Orthogonal Edge Routing for the EditLens

Abstract

The EditLens is an interactive lens technique that supports the editing of graphs. The user can insert, update, or delete nodes and edges while maintaining an already existing layout of the graph. For the nodes and edges that are affected by an edit operation, the EditLens suggests suitable locations and routes, which the user can accept or adjust. For this purpose, the EditLens requires an efficient routing algorithm that can compute results at interactive framerates. Existing algorithms cannot fully satisfy the needs of the EditLens. This paper describes a novel algorithm that can compute orthogonal edge routes for incremental edit operations of graphs. Tests indicate that, in general, the algorithm is better than alternative solutions.

20. Mapping Tasks to Interactions for Graph Exploration and Graph Editing on Interactive Surfaces

Abstract

Graph exploration and editing are still mostly considered independently and systems to work with are not designed for todays interactive surfaces like smartphones, tablets or tabletops. When developing a system for those modern devices that supports both graph exploration and graph editing, it is necessary to 1) identify what basic tasks need to be supported, 2) what interactions can be used, and 3) how to map these tasks and interactions. This technical report provides a list of basic interaction tasks for graph exploration and editing as a result of an extensive system review. Moreover, different interaction modalities of interactive surfaces are reviewed according to their interaction vocabulary and further degrees of freedom that can be used to make interactions distinguishable are discussed. Beyond the scope of graph exploration and editing, we provide an approach for finding and evaluating a mapping from tasks to interactions, that is generally applicable. Thus, this work acts as a guideline for developing a system for graph exploration and editing that is specifically designed for interactive surfaces., Comment: 21 pages, minor corrections (typos etc.)
