The susceptibility of either oxidation into Sn(IV) or disproportionation into Sn(IV) and Sn(0) limits the study of metal tin‐(II)‐borate ceramics. We report mullite‐type SnCrBO4 and SnVBO4 synthesized in sealed quartz tubes by conventional solid‐state method. X‐ray powder diffraction data Rietveld refinements confirm that both compounds are isostructural to PbMBO4 phases for M = Al, Ga, Cr, Mn, and Fe. The end‐members show a complete miscibility within the Sn(Cr1−xVx)BO4 solid solution. Both the microstructural (average crystallite size, microstrain, and degree of crystallinity) and crystal structural (metric parameters, bond lengths, polyhedral volume, and polyhedral distortion) parameters are observed with respect to the compositional x‐value. The stereochemical activity of the 5 s2 lone electron pairs of Sn2+ cations has been measured by using the Wang–Liebau eccentricity parameter. The structural features are complemented by 119Sn Mössbauer, Raman, and Fourier‐transformed infrared spectroscopy. The 119Sn Mössbauer isomer shifts and the quadrupole splitting values confirm the SnO4 coordination and an Sn(II) valence state. The electronic band gap has been calculated from the UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectra, which slightly increases with successive decrease of the cationic radius from V to Cr. Temperature‐dependent inverse DC magnetic susceptibility suggests that SnCrBO4 and SnVBO4 are antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic (FM) with a Néel temperature of 17.2(1) K and a Curie temperature of 29.8(1) K, respectively. Alike the end‐member SnVBO4, Sn(Cr0.5V0.5)BO4 is also found to be a rare FM insulator. The thermal stability decreases with increasing vanadium content in the solid solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following recent investigation in the ternary system Sr–Al–Pt led to the discovery of SrAl5Pt3 which crystallizes in the orthorhombic YNi5Si3 type (Pnma) structure. Interestingly, only two more aluminum representatives, CeAl5Pt3 and EuAl5Pt3, have been reported to adopt this structure type. Therefore, we decided to investigate the existence range of compounds adopting the YNi5Si3 type structure. Besides the already known Sr, Ce and Eu members, the series could be extended to Ca, Y and La–Nd as well as Sm–Er. All compounds were synthesized from the elements and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction. While for CaAl5Pt3 and LaAl5Pt3 also the respective M2Al16Pt9 members were observed, the other compounds could be obtained either as X-ray pure materials or with small amounts of Al3Pt2 as a side phase. The structure of ErAl5Pt3 could be refined from single crystal data, verifying that also the small rare-earth elements adopt the YNi5Si3 type structure. Selected members of the series were furthermore characterized by magnetization and susceptibility measurements. Since YAl5Pt3 could be obtained as a phase pure material and exhibits no paramagnetic behaviour it was investigated by 27Al MAS NMR investigations. Also, XPS measurements were conducted on this compound to gain an insight into the charge distribution. The quinary members in the solid solution Hf2Fe1−δRu5−xIrx+δB2 (x=1–4, VE=63–66) have been investigated experimentally and computationally. They were synthesized via arc‐melting and analyzed by EDX and X‐ray diffraction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations predicted a preference for magnetic ordering in all members, but with a strong competition between ferro‐ and antiferromagnetism arising from interchain Fe−Fe interactions. The spin exchange and magnetic anisotropy energies predicted the lowest magnetic hardness for x=1 and 3 and the highest for x=2. Magnetization measurements confirm the DFT predictions and demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic ordering (TN=55–70 K) found at low magnetic fields changed to ferromagnetic (TC=150–750 K) at higher fields, suggesting metamagnetic behavior for all samples. As predicted, Hf2FeRu3Ir2B2 has the highest intrinsic coercivity (Hc=74 kA/m) reported to date for Ti3Co5B2‐type phases. Furthermore, all coercivities outperform that of ferromagnetic Hf2FeIr5B2, indicating the importance of AFM interactions in enhancing magnetic anisotropy in these materials. Importantly, two members (x=1 and 4) maintain intrinsic coercivities in the semi‐hard range at room temperature. The Lu3Co2In4-type stannides RE3Ir2Sn4 (RE = Y, Sm, Gd–Tm, Lu) were synthesized from the elements by arc-melting and subsequent annealing sequences in sealed silica ampoules. For a more comprehensive phase analytical study, the isotypic stannide Sm3Rh2Sn4 and the ZrNiAl-type stannides DyIrSn and LT-YIrSn were also obtained. The polycrystalline samples were characterized through their X-ray powder patterns. The structures of DyIrSn and Gd3Ir2.63(2)Sn3.37(2) (ZrNiAl type, space group P6‾2m), Sm3Ir2.52(2)Sn3.48(1), Gd3Ir2.49(1)Sn3.51(1) and Tm3Ir2.20(3)Sn3.80(3) (Lu3Co2In4 type, space group P6‾) were refined from single-crystal X-ray diffractometer data, revealing residual Ir/Sn disorder in the low-symmetry variants. The RE3Ir2Sn4 stannides are derived from the equiatomic stannides REIrSn (≍RE3Rh3Sn3) by partial Ir/Sn substitution. The symmetry reduction from space group P6‾2m to P6‾ is forced by the Ir/Sn ordering within the RE6 trigonal prisms. The new Sn2 position shows the rare motif of a trigonal planar tin coordination with 289 pm Sn2–Sn1 distances (data for Gd3Ir2.49(1)Sn3.51(1)). 119Sn Mössbauer spectra confirm the two crystallographically independent tin sites in Tm3Ir2Sn4 and the structural disorder in Gd3Ir2Sn4. The intermetallic ytterbium compounds YbZnSn, YbPdSn2, YbAuIn2 and their calcium-substituted counterparts Yb0.5Ca0.5ZnSn, Yb0.5Ca0.5PdSn2 and Yb0.5Ca0.5AuIn2 were synthesized by reaction of the elements in sealed tantalum tubes in an induction furnace. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. Their static, temperature-dependent solid-state 171Yb NMR spectra exhibit strong positive Knight shifts without any significant temperature dependence. The solid solutions Eu2Al15(Pt1−xTx)6 with T = Pd, Ir, Au and x = 1/6 were prepared by arc-melting the stoichiometric mixture of the elements, and subsequent annealing. For x = 1/6, all three solid solutions adopt the same structure type as Eu2Al15Pt6 according to powder X-ray diffraction data. Since the platinide Eu2Al15Pt6 exhibits a (3 + 1)D modulated structure (approximant in space group P121/m1), only the averaged hexagonal unit cell (P63/mmc, Sc0.6Fe2Si4.9 type) was refined by the Rietveld method. Scanning electron microscopy in combination with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) showed that the degree of substitution is in line with the weighed amounts. For values of x > 1/6, no phase-pure samples could be obtained. The results of the magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that the isoelectronic substitution of Pd for Pt lowers the temperature of the first-order valence phase transition from Ttrans = 45 K in Eu2Al15Pt6 to Ttrans = 42 K in Eu2Al15(Pt5/6Pd1/6)6. For Eu2Al15(Pt5/6Ir1/6)6 and Eu2Al15(Pt5/6Au1/6)6 a change in the electronic situation occurs since the Ir substituted compound exhibits one electron less compared to the pristine Pt compound, while Eu2Al15(Pt5/6Au1/6)6 has one additional electron. As a consequence, Eu2Al15(Pt5/6Ir1/6)6 shows a higher valence phase transition temperature of Ttrans = 52 K while for Eu2Al15(Pt5/6Au1/6)6 no such transition is obvious. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Single crystals of Y3Ru were obtained as a side product during phase analytical studies of yttrium-rich compounds in the system Y–Ru–Zn. The structure of Y3Ru was refined from single-crystal X-ray diffractometer data: Fe3C type, Pnma, a = 732.51(7), b = 925.61(8), c = 633.66(10) pm, wR = 0.0639, 811 F2 values, 23 variables. The ruthenium atoms have coordination number 9 in form of a strongly distorted tricapped trigonal yttrium prism with Ru–Y distances ranging from 275–391 pm. The second substructure concerns empty Y6 octahedra (d(Y–Y) = 344–396 pm). Electronic structure calculations show a net charge transfer from yttrium to ruthenium and underpin the essentially covalent Y–Ru bonding. A phase-pure sample of Y3Ru was synthesized from the elements by arc-melting. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility studies of this sample reveal Pauli paramagnetism (3.6(1) × 10−5 emu mol−1 at T = 300 K). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several ternary rare-earth metals containing titanium aluminum intermetallics in the RE2TiAl3 series (RE = Y, Gd–Lu) have been synthesized from the elements using arc-melting techniques. All compounds crystallize in the trigonal crystal system with rhombohedral space group R 3 m (Z = 3) and lattice parameters ranging between a = 582–570 and c = 1353–1358 pm. They adopt the Mg2Ni3Si-type structure, which is an ordered superstructure of the cubic Laves phase MgCu2 and has been observed for Al intermetallics for the first time. Tetrahedral [TiAl3] entities that are connected over all corners form a network where the empty [TiAl3] tetrahedra exhibit a full Ti/Al ordering based on the single crystal results. The Al atoms are arranged into 63 Kagomé nets, while the Ti atoms connect these nets over the triangular units. In the cavities of this three-dimensional arrangement, the RE cations can be found forming a distorted diamond-type substructure. Magnetic measurements revealed that Y2TiAl3 and Lu2TiAl3 are Pauli paramagnetic substances, in line with the metallic character. The other compounds exhibit paramagnetism with antiferromagnetic ordering at a maximum Néel temperature of TN = 26.1(1) K for Gd2TiAl3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The stannides RE3Rh2Sn4 (RE = Y, Gd–Tm, Lu) were synthesized from the elements by arc-melting and subsequent annealing (1220 K for RE = Y, Gd–Tm and 1170 K for RE = Lu) in sealed silica ampoules for 11 days. X-ray powder diffraction studies confirm the hexagonal Lu3Co2In4 type structure, space group P 6 ‾ $P\overline{6}$. The structure of Gd3Rh2Sn4 was refined from single crystal X-ray diffractometer data for a twinned crystal: a = 744.04(6), c = 409.23(4) pm, wR2 = 0.0288, 567 F2 values and 21 variables. The RE3Rh2Sn4 stannides derive from the well-known equiatomic stannides RERhSn (≍RE3Rh3Sn3) by Rh/Sn ordering within the RE6 trigonal prisms. The striking structural motif is the trigonal planar tin coordination of the Sn2 atoms with 288 pm Sn2–Sn1 distances. The Sn2 atoms carry substantially more negative charge than the Sn1 atoms. This is underlined by 119Sn isomer shifts of δ = 1.86(1) mm s−1 for Sn1 and δ = 2.26(1) mm s−1 for Sn2 detected in the Mössbauer spectrum of Lu3Rh2Sn4. From atoms in molecules (AIM) analysis of the charge density obtained with calculation based on density functional theory (DFT) for Y3Rh2Sn4, the charge transfer proceeds from yttrium towards more electronegative rhodium. Little departure from neutrality is observed for tin whose itinerant s-like states are little involved with the bonding. The site projected density of states (DOS) and the crystal orbital overlap population (COOP) plots further illustrate these observations and reveal major Y–Rh and Rh–Sn bonding, while Y–Sn bonding is weaker. The metal borides, Hf 2 MOs 5 B 2 (M = Mn, Fe, Co), which are the first Os-rich quaternary variants of the prolific Ti 3 Co 5 B 2 structure type, were investigated computationally and experimentally. In their crystal structures, osmium builds a network of prisms, in which the other elements are located. The magnetic M elements are found in face-connected Os 8 square prisms leading to M-chains with intra- and interchain distances of about 3.0 and 6.5 Å, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) showed that magnetic ordering is hugely favored for M = Mn and Fe but only slightly favored for M = Co. Experimental investigations then confirmed and extended the DFT predictions as a metamagnetic behavior was found for the M = Mn and Fe phases, whereby the antiferromagnetic interactions ( T N = 19 and 90 K) found at low magnetic fields change to ferromagnetic at higher fields. A very broad transition ( T N = 45 K) is found for M = Co, suggesting spin-glass behavior for this phase. For M = Fe, a hard-magnet hysteresis at 5 K is found with a 40 kA/m coercivity, and even at room temperature, a significant hysteresis is found. This study paves the way for the discovery of Os-based magnets in this structure type and other intermetallics.
